ere today, gone tomorrow. Some of the best and most memorable LGBT bars in Atlanta have come and gone over the past 10 years. Remember Red Chair? The Metro? Phoenix? How about The Armory, Halo, Hoedowns, or Wet Bar? Of course, who can forget Backstreet? It isn’t easy for bars, or many businesses in general, to succeed in today’s market, but one friendly neighborhood bar that has made it and is still going strong is Friends on Ponce. Friends, located at 736 Ponce de Leon Avenue in Midtown, will celebrate its milestone ten-year anniversary on Sunday Aug. 3 starting at 2 p.m. The event will feature free food, fun, and festivities and special guest appearances. “We decided to do something for the people who have been there for us, to show our appreciation, and for all the new people that’s come along and just found us,” said night manager Regina “Boom Boom” Simms, who is herself one of Atlanta’s most popular and beloved entertainers. “It’s going to be a party. There won’t be a show, but there will be some cameo appearances that many people know.” While Friends’ management and staff say the early years presented many challenges, they overcame obstacles and not only survived in a changing market, but also thrived as a place where all are welcome. The staff has many reasons to be proud. One of the biggest reasons is the diversity of their customers and the welcoming and friendly atmosphere offered to them. “It has kind of been that hidden treasure that no one knew anything about, but when they got here it was like, ‘This is cool,’” said Simms. It doesn’t matter if you’re straight or gay. It’s one thing we’re fighting for: to be considered equal. We want to have unity. Everybody has a gay friend. Everybody has a straight friend. When you all get together, it’s just people being with people.” In addition to daily Long Island Iced Tea and House Margarita specials, the bar has a variety of games such as darts, pool, and pinball. It is also a venue for the Atlanta Poker Club, Texas Hold’em and Atlanta Pool League tournaments. The Georgia Lottery has also installed Keno games, which customers can enjoy while listening to music from the state-of-the-art Internet jukebox. “We always wanted to have a diverse clientele and always tried to promote it that way,” said Lewis Covington, day manager. “We always wanted to make everyone who walks through the door feel like they’re welcome here. That’s sort of our standard.” It may seem cliché, but as Simms said, there really is “something for everybody.” “People often walk through the door, feel good, and stay. Before you know it, they’re closing the bar. We have davidatlanta.com // 15

We also have longtime patrons, like one of our longtime groups who call themselves ‘Jurassic Park.’ They all wear t-shirts and come in every Friday. Atlanta Bucks: The Trip of a Lifetime BY JONATHAN BUGG

O

n Saturday, August 2 the Atlanta Bucks Rugby team will offer Rugby 101 “boot-camp” and rugby scrimmage events as a final push and send off to the 2014 Bingham Cup held in Sydney, Australia. For many of the Bingham Cup participants, coming to Australia will be a trip of a lifetime, especially for the American teams participating in one of the largest international sporting events that will be held in Australia. However, it has not been easy to get there. Each member of the squad must come up with over $2,000 to cover travel expenses. In the Bucks’ case, as well as with many of the other 26 American Rugby clubs qualified to participate, it was simply not financially possible to bring an entire squad to Sydney. The solution: join with another club. Hence, the Bucks will join the Charlotte Royals. The newly combined team, Royal Bucks, has had several practices since June to prepare. On Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Rugby 101 is offered to all who have the inclination, desire and sheer madness to learn the basics of rugby. In the afternoon the Royal Bucks will scrimmage one of Atlanta’s straight rugby teams followed by a cookout for the players.

“It’s basically a full day of Rugby education, scrimmage and fun, ending in a great send off party hosted by the Heretic,” said Bucks President Jason Parris. This will be the seventh Bingham Cup held, the first in the southern hemisphere. Since it is the trip of a lifetime, many of the team members have additional plans to visit other parts of Australia and New Zealand while they are there. “Going to these [Bingham Cup] tournaments is one of the most fun things I do in my life,” said Parris. “I’ve been to three of them now from Minneapolis to Manchester, England, and there’s really nothing like it. Rugby isn’t one of the United States’ most popular sports yet, so it’s amazing to get out of the country and play with people whose culture is naturally more embracing to the sport. However, playing rugby for three days is very taxing on the body… and the mind. It’s kinda the ultimate test that you can put yourself through. There’s just no time to recover.”

Rugby 101 will be held at Walker Park • 224 Memorial Terrace SE beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Heretic send-off party for the Atlanta/Charlotte Royal Bucks begins at 10 p.m. and goes all night to 3 a.m. $5 cover after 11p.m.

IGRAB (International Gay Rugby Association & Board) has an additional agenda for this year called “Out in the Fields” (www.outonthefields.com). It is the first international study on homophobia in sports. The study asks athletes and spectators from all over the world to share their experiences in a wide variety of areas of sport, including how often athletes/fans witness or experience what they consider “homophobic” slurs, jokes and bullying. Wales Rugby legend Gareth Thomas, who came out in 2009, is a well-known athlete encouraging people to take part. “Many athletes around the world fear they won’t be accepted by their teammates and others if they are honest about their sexuality,” said Thomas. Please take some time and make your submission to this wonderful study at www.outonthefields.com

One of the America’s most celebrated homes, the over-the-top mansion at Biltmore Estate.

Asheville, North Carolina From the Grind to Divine in Only 3.5 Hours

I

f you’ve been keeping up with the country’s most buzzedabout hipster destinations of late, you’ve probably heard Asheville mentioned in the mix, perhaps alongside cities like Austin, Brooklyn, and Portland, Ore. This relatively small mountain metropolis in western North Carolina has long been a creative-spirited, relatively progressive island in one of the nation’s more socially conservative regions. LGBT-owned businesses, top-notch art galleries and furniture studios, along with inviting Victorian and Arts and Crafts-style inns – and independently owned shops, music clubs, theaters and cafes – have thrived here for decades, but more recently, the Asheville has cultivated an urbane, artisan-driven food and drink scene that’s particularly impressive for a city with just around 85,000 residents. With a fairly reasonable cost of living and a moderate climate, Asheville (exploreasheville.com) is becoming a popular place to relocate among not just hipsters but all sorts of professionals of all ages, many from larger and more crowded cities. Additionally, young college grads are moving in at a steady pace – something that seldom happened in Asheville before the city began to undergo a renaissance a couple of decades ago. This leafy, hilly community just a 2-hour drive from Charlotte, a 3.5-hour drive from Atlanta and a 4.5-hour drive from Nashville has become a top weekend destination, too, with a sizable gay following. Downtown Asheville rests like a saucer balanced precariously amid the slopes of forested hills and mountains. It’s an impressively preserved city, with dozens of fine old buildings, many of them striking Art Deco beauties. The surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains account for much of the region’s appeal – it’s an hour’s drive west to reach Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You can also navigate a stretch of the winding, scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, which passes right through the center of Asheville on its way north toward Virginia. Many other state parks and forests are within a short drive, and right in the city you can appreciate nature with a hike through the 10-acre Asheville Botanical Gardens or the 434-acre North Carolina Arboretum. 24 // 07.30.2014

By Andrew Collins The downtown area is great for strolling – it’s also quite hilly, though, so prepare to get some exercise. Be sure to stop by the Asheville Art Museum, which has a celebrated collection of contemporary American works, and if you’re a fan of modern American literature, don’t miss the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, which includes a visitor center and the boarding house in which the author of You Can’t Go Home Again grew up. Almost every visitor to Asheville pays a visit to the Biltmore Estate (biltmore.com), one of America’s few true castles. The 250-room mansion and resplendent grounds were commissioned by the phenomenally wealthy railroad tycoon George Vanderbilt and executed by Richard Morris Hunt in 1895. Touring the mansion’s grandiose, if rather solemn, interior can feel a bit overwhelming, especially on a sunny day, but the 8,000-acre property’s outdoor features are arguably its greatest draw - you could easily spend the day sauntering along the 2.5 miles of paths through the gorgeous manicured gardens, or along the many more rugged trails through dense woods and open meadows. Other highlights include the Biltmore Winery, the working dairy farm at Antler Hill Village, and the Outdoor Adventure Center, where you can book a wide range of activities, from river float trips to bike excursions. Right on the property, the luxurious, 213-room Inn on Biltmore Estate offers swank accommodations, and nearby Biltmore Village abounds with upscale shops and restaurants. A little southwest of downtown and northeast of Biltmore Estate, you’ll find one of Asheville’s more recent developments, the rapidly evolving River Arts District (riverartsdistrict.com), which is home to both new buildings and converted industrial spaces now filled with art galleries and studios, as well as a handful of cool restaurants and nightspots. The neighborhood extends north along Lyman Street from across the river from French Broad River Park all the way to the I-240 bridge, with plenty of businesses on both sides of the railroad tracks, which bisect the neighborhood.

davidatlanta.com // 25

Virtually all of Asheville’s nightspots, including many of the drink-centric restaurants described above, have a strong following with the LGBT crowd. With its rapidly emerging culinary scene, Asheville has become a favorite foodie hub. Highlights are many, but here are a handful of notables. Chef-owned by a team who trained with famed Spanish elBulli chef Ferran Adrià, Cúrate (curatetapasbar.com) is one of the hottest spots in town, turning out authentic tapas with creative twists – consider the Catalan sausage bocadillo (baguette sandwich), or the tender skewered lamb marinated in Moroccan spices. The owners also operate the trendy and eclectic restaurant and cocktail lounge, Nightbell (thenightbell.com), just around the corner. Another top table is Rhubarb (rhubarbasheville.com), a sleekly swish bistro helmed by chef John Fleer and situated across from the Asheville Art Museum. Favorites from the contemporary Mediterranean menu include rabbit-leek rillettes, octopus a la plancha, and charmoula-grilled flat-iron steak. In the hip River Arts District, stop by Wedge Brewing Company (wedgebrewing.com) not just to sample fine brews but also to nosh from the several excellent food carts – the rotation changes daily (El Kimchi, which appears Mondays and Saturdays, is a highlight, serving Korean-Mexican fusion fare). There’s also live music and, during the warmer months, an outdoor cinema. A bit south along bustling Depot Street, the Junction (thejunctionasheville.com) serves delectable Southern comfort fare (pan-seared peaches, sweet-teabrined fried chicken), while airy and contemporary Blue Kudzu (bluekudzusake.com) is one of the nation’s premier sake breweries and also a source of outstanding Pan-Asian fare, such as crisped-pork-belly ramen and kimchi Rueben sandwiches. Good spots for casual snacking include City Bakery Café (citybakery.net), an airy space with a few tables on the sidewalk and superb sandwiches; Dobrá Tea (dobrateanc. com), a Czech-inspired tearoom with tasty Middle Eastern food; and funky Izzy’s Coffee Den (izzyscoffeeden.com), which fits the bill for high-octane java, craft beer and simply hanging out and people-watching. French Broad Chocolate Lounge (frenchbroadchocolates.com) handcrafts exquisite truffles, caramels and bars of chocolate – you can also sip wine, beer and coffee in a cozy lounge space. One of the most venerable indie bookstores in the South, Malaprops Bookstore and Café (malaprops.com) 26 // 07.30.2014

has a large LGBT section and a nice little coffeehouse inside. And also very popular with the gay crowd, Edna’s of Asheville (ednasofasheville.com) is on the north side of the city and serves terrific coffee drinks, breakfast fare and sandwiches. Virtually all of Asheville’s nightspots, including many of the drink-centric restaurants described above, have a strong following with the LGBT crowd. There are also a few predominantly gay hangouts, the largest being the Grove House Entertainment Complex (thegrovehouse.com), a rambling building that contains Scandals dance club, the Boiler Room live-music venue, and Club Eleven on Grove for events and parties. Nearby Club Hairspray (clubhairspray.com) is beloved for its kitschy interior, entertaining drag (queen and king) shows and friendly vibe. Drawing a mostly male crowd, O’Henry’s (ohenrysofasheville.com) is a fun neighborhood hangout that’s particularly popular with bearish types and fans of leather – the bar has been going strong for more than 35 years and adjoins neighboring dance bar, the Underground. Downtown bar-hoppers might want to stop by Smokey’s After Dark (facebook.com/smokys.afterdark), a laid-back, noattitude neighborhood spot that’s fun for shooting pool and meeting locals. And women-owned Tressa’s (tressas.com) – with live jazz and blues, comedy, and dancing – has a loyal following in the LGBT community. Asheville has several inviting, gay-friendly inns, from upscale historic mansions to cozy Arts and Crafts cottages. The city’s most renowned accommodation is the Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa (groveparkinn.com), one of the nation’s foremost historic hotels, which has been fully restored to its original 1913 Arts and Crafts design. You’ll find one of the South’s most impressive spas on the lower level, and restaurants and bars affording panoramic views of the city skyline and surrounding mountains. Among the dining options, don’t miss Edison, which serves tasty small-plates fare (goat-cheese flatbread, an awesome burger with bacon jam and American cheese) and terrific craft beers. Even if you don’t stay here, sitting in the grand lobby before the enormous fireplace, and looking out over the countryside from the terrace is a real treat.

Blake’s proved to be a great venue to embody Belinda’s vision for the event. “‘I’d like [it] to be concert-style…yet very intimate at the same time,” said Escott. The stage is set up in front of the bar’s large floor-to-ceiling windows, and with tables lining the walls and plenty of barstools around the island-style bar, there is ample seating. More importantly, Belinda promises excellent sound quality. “[There is] nothing worse than getting on stage and somebody messing up your sound. We have an experienced sound professional, Nate- who is also a musician- running sound.” Not to mention, the bar already has good acoustics for live music. The bar is also proud to introduce local singer/songwriter, and Blake’s open mic host, Kyle Kirkland. Kyle has years of stage experience under his belt, which along with his passion for music became apparent when he performed in between sets.

The Hot Spotlight: Blake’s on the Park Rocks Midtown with New Weekly Open Mic Nights photo: Dylan Goldman

A couple years before joining the ranks at Blake’s, Belindawho happens to be an incredibly talented singer/songwriter herself- hosted a very successful open mic night at My Sister’s Room in East Atlanta Village. “When I was first hired and they found out I had a background in music, and also have hosted artist showcases and an open mic before, they were very interested in doing that at Blake’s,” Escott said. “Now feels like the right time. There is a supportive listening audience in Midtown who would love to hear up-and-coming singer/songwriters.” It’s important to note that open mic is not glorified karaoke with live music. “It’s for artists to show something of themselves, and broaden their listening audience,” Belinda said. “It’s about the artist. That is where the focus should be; it’s not about ego and agenda.”

By Dylan Goldman

Escott is also excited about the diversity this event will bring to the bar. “Musicians are innovators and artists- they play a idtown Open Mic, Atlanta’s most recent re- huge role in social change,” Belinda told David Atlanta. “Music curring live music event, debuted at Blake’s brings people together.” on the Park this week, making Midtown the newest hot-spot for up-and-coming singer/ “Whether you play as a hobby, want to make it big, or simply songwriters. are a supporter of local music, Midtown Open Mic is absolutely worth checking out. fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):

This is a mixed week in because Uranus entered its retrograde phase, possibly bringing out the rebel in you. If financial matters have been rather slow to improve, progress can now be made. A strong determination to overcome challenges in this area will encourage you to put 100 percent into solving problems for good.

The “fun meter” is set on high, with a delightful focus on dating, socializing, and even romance. You’ll be in your element when organizing events, matchmaking, and generally bringing folks together.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):

If you want to stay friends with someone, it’s best not to rock the boat. However, this week can be excellent for detailed work, planning, and organization. You can make great strides if you put your mind to it. Relationships could become a lot more passionate through the weekend.

The spotlight beckons this week to make you the star of the show. Now more than ever it’s time to prioritize your goals and focus on those that matter most. Along with this you’ll be motivated to overcome challenges and explore new pathways to greater happiness.

GEMINI (May 21- June 20):

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):

This can be a great time to showcase your (ahem) abilities or advertise your “goods and services”. However, you could also make a lot of money promoting and selling other people’s “products”. So maybe you should try and be a pimp!

New adventures open up for you as a focus on exploration coincides with a restless need to travel. You might also be motivated to study, perhaps to gain a certification, or try lecturing, teaching, or getting published.

CANCER (June 21- July 22):

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):

Finances look set to improve with Jupiter now in your money sector. This is a time when the more effort you put in, the more you’ll get out. Or maybe the more you put out, the more your finances improve? Go talk to a Gemini.

The current lineup can be helpful if you’re an entrepreneur or businessperson with ambition. Being practical and down to earth, it helps to make a plan before you get started. Your social life perks up to people with power and influence.

LEO (July 23 – August 22):

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):

You’ll be a beacon of warmth and natural this week. Yet home and family matters may get you all stirred up. Stay away from bar friends that will lead you down a bad path. The New Moon in your sign on Saturday is perfect for making a fresh start.

You’re in a phase when relationships are at an all-time high. Your social life may get busier and busier, which you might quite enjoy. However, career matters also get a boost as the wee progresses. Watch out for pit falls and all may be ok!

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):

PISCES (February 19 – March 19):

You’re in a natural phase when exploring your fantasies, paying attention to your intuitive impulses about sex, and becoming acquainted with your deeper purpose is very much in the fore. You may want to take time out to reflect, meditate and maybe stretch before you tackle those fantasies.

A feeling of vitality and radiance could give you a boost that not only enhances energy levels but also gives you that feelgood factor. Romantic opportunities coincide with intense exchanges, where control battles and a desire for power could unleash sexual desire.

Overheard: “He’s a special guy and not in a good way.” I’ve lived here all my life and the scene has changed. But the attitudes of it’s inhabitants have changed even more though.

Dear Atlanta, We are a part of your family. We are all in this fight together. We are fighting for the same rights that you are. But some of us are going to battle without a full arsenal.

I’m not sure if he takes after his mother or father. It’s hard to tell since they are brother and sister.

I don’t even know how these Israelis and Palestinians find time to hate when they’re all so f**king hot?

I’m not saying he’s a slut, but he’s been on more wieners than ketchup.

He thinks he’s the shit and he’s close. He’s just full of shit

Flash your credit card at me one more time; that will surely get your cocktail delivered faster. I don’t want to be mean, but that bitch need Listerine.

Oh, he’s a BMW.... Body Made Wrong.
