called “geek shows”. The word itself, “geek”, came from the word “geck”, which was originally a Low German word which meant someone who is a “fool/freak/simpleton”.

I recently heard a story that might explain where the term “Flamer” comes from. Even if it isn’t true, it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Back in the seventies, when the disco era was in full swing, gay men were on a dance floor smoking cigarettes and huffing poppers. So the story is that at some points during the night someone would be lighting a cigarrette too close to Finding the origins of obscure terms and phrases is a se- an open bottle of highly flammable poppers and POOF! A ball cret nerdy passion of mine. My grammar may be subpar, of flame ignites in the air. Thus the term “Flamer” was born. but my vocabulary is running strong. Nerd is a really odd word to me. It has a number of potential origins without Anybody have any other origins for Flammer? any clear winner. My favorite origin is that it was derived from “drunk” spelled backwards, “knurd”. This was fitting In this issue, a guide to gadgets showcases some of the newest to describe people who studied instead of going out with and hottest trends and products guaranteed to make any techfriends and partying. Geek is another word I found worth researching. The first documented case of “geek” dates all the way back to 1916. At the time, the term was used to describe sideshow freaks in circuses. Specifically, it was typically attributed to those circus performers who were known for doing crazy things like biting the heads of various small live animals or eating insects. These performances were often

Now, welcome to all that is PS4. There’s another competing console called an XBOX. Bully for them, it’s called the ONE... even though it’s their 3rd machine, if you don’t count the versions of the 360 that had different memory capacities. What marketing genius thought that was clever? Either way, I’m not remotely interested. Some of you may be supporters, and I respect that you are not interested in playing older titles since the company has no interest in bringing old games to their new system. That’s so weird. With the PS4, I’m able to play a lot of older console games through a rental cloud streaming service that is currently under beta testing. It’s like a Netflix of older video game titles where you can rent for a couple of hours, several hours, a few days, a few weeks, or a month. All for ranging prices of a couple of dollars to twenty dollars. A total bargain if you’re looking to play an older title that you missed out on the first time around. So far for me as a lucky beta tester, the streaming has been top notch and without glitches or download freezes. Hell, they’re even taking PS3 titles and converting them to PS4 parameters, and selling them as a new game. What genius marketing! Especially since I never owned the PS3 and had to miss out on some of these great titles. Never again do I have to miss the old ones!

Do. You. Want. To. Play. A. Game? Why are we obsessed with gaming? Is it a much needed break from reality, where we get to be the hero and blow up a few villains? Or is it just a way to entertain ourselves, and water cooler the latest and hottest consoles and games? There was a time between my teens and early adulthood where I didn’t play games. Anything after Super Nintendo & Nintendo 64 just wasn’t of interest to me, and there were new shiny baubles that drew my attention. Then, in 1993 my brother introduced me to a PC game called MYST. I was blown away by the look of the game and the extremely different approach to game playing, and I wanted more.

I recently played the new Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition upgrade, and I almost lost my mind at how crazy amazing and beautiful that game is. I highly recommend it, and look forward to playing the latest upgraded title The Last of Us, winner of over 200 Game of the Year awards. So even if they don’t upgrade older PS3 titles to PS4 parameters, the new stuff is looking pretty stellar. The Order or Kingdom Hearts 3 anyone? The pace of changes in technology can be overwhelming, but nothing quite feels more comfortable than a controller in your hand. So if it’s action adventure you crave, or spooky moody survival horror titles, or even a good old fashioned Grand Theft Auto tank drop to run over people...you owe it to yourself to revisit a new console game and see what you’ve been missing. You’ll be obsessed too.

What quickly followed were other big titles that were genre pieces that I had always enjoyed in film and television. Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within, Phantasmagoria, The Dig, and King’s Quest VII: The Princeless Bride. All games that had elements of horror, fantasy, or the supernatural, and we’re definitely in my wheelhouse of interest. These games were obviously very different than your traditional console games of the time, and helped lead me into believing that computers were our future, and were truly meant to stay. It was 1993 after all, how many of you actually owned a computer back then? Flash forward to 1997, and my husband and I are in college together and we hear all about the hype of this Playstation device. Final Fantasy VII anyone? It was ‘game on’ from there. Of course the first PS, led to the PS2, and then the Nintendo Gamecube, etc. etc. 10 // 08.13.2014

Summer

Gadget Roundup BY CALLIE CARMICHAEL

It’s time to treat your inner tech geek! We’ve rounded up some of the best gadgets of the web. Wrap up this summer with smart style.

Selfie Toaster

burntimpressions.com Love your mug enough to eat it for breakfast? Behold, the Selfie Toaster. “You don’t have to be famous or Jesus to do it!” touts the Vermont Novelty Toaster corporation’s website. How does it work? You simply upload a hi-resolution photo of your face to the company’s website, which is then made into a metal plate that burns your image into the toast. You can pick from five a toaster color options (blue, red, green, yellow or powder) and it will take ten days for your personalized Selfie Toaster to arrive in the mail. At $75, you’ll have to eat a lot of toast to get your money’s worth.

uNu Ultrapak

myunu.com/ultrapak-go-battery-pack.html Forget awkwardly sitting on the floor at the airport terminal to charge your phone. There’s a new battery pack in town. Meet the UNU Ultrapak. Unlike other battery boosters, the Ultrapak provides a full charge to your phone or tablet in just 15 minutes. The device features an LED screen that shows how much juice is left. The devices come in both small and large configurations: the Ultrapak Go ($59.99) and the Ultrapak Tour ($99.99), which has a dual USB port. Added bonus: Each has a tiny flashlight for those times you’re poking around in the dark for a power socket.

Muku Shuttr

mukulabs.com Let’s face it, no one has long enough arms for the perfect selfie. Here’s where Muku Shuttr comes in. Simply put, it’s a Bluetooth shutter remote for your phone. Set the camera up, strike a pose and click! Now, no one has to be left out of the photo. The remote is tiny and can easily attach to any keychain. What sets it apart from other remote shutters is that it works on both Apple and Android devices using the native camera app—no third party downloads required. Also, it’s just so simple and elegant. Each costs $39.99

Halo TrackR

thetrackr.com Just think of all the time you spend digging through couch cushions for lost items . Never lose anything again. Or so Halo TrackR claims. It’s one of the newest tracking devices to hit the market along with Tile and Duet. It’s a sleek little device about the size of a poker chip that you place on virtually any item you lose. The tracker connects with your phone’s Bluetooth and alerts you when you’ve gotten too far from your precious belonging. It’s reasonably priced at $25 and has a battery life of about a year. 14 // 08.13.2014

Amazon Fire Phone

amazon.com/Fire-Phone This is not just another sad iPhone rip-off. First off, it’s 3D! Which we can all agree makes everything cooler. The fancy Amazon name for it however, is “Dynamic Perspective” which is just one of the defining features of the phone. The phone’s four small cameras detect the phone’s orientation and 3D surroundings. This allows some specially enabled apps to create neat 3D effects, like objects appearing to pop out of your phone. Secondly, this phone makes it shockingly simple to buy almost any product. The cameras can scan a product, display a description and of course, allow you to purchase. This is the ultimate shopaholic’s phone. While this is a fun phone for shopping and playing, you may find the apps a little lacking, especially for the price you pay which is comparable to iPhone and Android phones.

Adobe Ink & Slide

adobe.com/products/ink-and-slide.html The Adobe Ink & Slide is the perfect solution for artists on the go. The sleek stylus and ruler connect with your iPad (right now they’re just for Apple users) and can be used with Adobe’s own Sketch and Line apps. The tip of the stylus is only slightly larger than a ball point pin head, allowing for precision drawing and sketching. The slide lets you draw perfect lines—even if you try not to. The price: $199.

The Pebble Steel Smartwatch

getpebble.com/steel Even though the smartwatch industry is still evolving, you may want to wrap your wrist with one of these. Like its rivals, the Pebble Steel gives you quick access to important apps and notifications on your wrist. What’s different is that the battery life lasts up to about a week and it can even survive a dunk in the pool. The Pebble Steel also plays nicely with both Android and iPhone. Both platforms allow you download and install Pebble apps. The best part about the Pebble though, is that it just looks so good in both the matte black and brushed stainless steel options. It’s way less clunky and nerdy looking than its rivals. Supplies are still currently limited but if you can get your hands on one it will cost you a cool $249.

CaseCam

case-cam.com They say the best camera you have is the one that you always have with you. Which in most cases, these days, is your phone. But what about a tripod? A tripod can make the difference between a shakyhanded blurry mess and a master shot. Enter CaseCam. It’s the perfect compact tripod shutter solution. It clips onto your iPhone with its flip-out mirror kickstand and pairs with the CaseCam app to let you take photos or videos remotely. As part of a Kickstarter campaign, the CaseCam is available for $25 until August 22.

A Festival That Gives Back: Piedmont Park Arts and Crafts Festival

M

any of us look upon the idyllic grace of Piedmont Park’s verdant rolling hills, generous public spaces and peaceful grandeur and forget that many times a year the park is inundated with hoards of people seemingly bound and determined to wreck it’s natural beauty. We forget that it takes dedicated patrons, staff and volunteers to maintain the very green-space that we seek out. The Piedmont Park Arts & Crafts Festival is one of the few events held in the park dedicated to the preservation and prosperity for the future. On Friday evening, August 15, Piedmont Park Arts & Crafts Festival (PPACF) will hold it’s inaugural VIP Preview Party at the historic Greystone Bathhouse in Piedmont Park from 7-10 p.m. Art Lovers of all kinds will have the chance to view and purchase original small-format artwork from a selection of artists participating in the festival. Some of the artists include Juan Adaro, Sheron Davis, Jenny Henley, Chris Mason, Rosa McMurtray, Whitney Summerford Spoon, Marc Villanueva and Matt Estrada.

By Jonathan Bugg

Matt Estrada is one of Piedmont Park Arts & Crafts Festival’s featured artists, Estrada is quickly making waves in the festival circuit. He creates original pieces of midcentury modern “bird homes” as he calls it. That’s right, now your outdoor feathered friends can also share in the clean lines and thoughtful use of materials as you do. Matt is a resident of Nashville and while he has been creating these one of a kind bird homes for quite some time, he only recently committed to being a full-time artisan two months ago. Now his life is spent hopping between some 35+ events a year. “My style is a melding of rustic and midcentury making for fabulous original designs. I source a lot of my wood from reclaimed barn wood. You just can’t find wood like that anymore. Plus it’s a great way to show people that you don’t always have to build from new-material” stated Estrada.

It takes Matt anywhere from 30 minutes for a very simple design to more than 3 hours for the more complicated. That doesn’t include the staining using his custom formulated color palette. More often than not, he uses block and stripe patterns to further enhance the midcentury feel for each piece. VIP ticketholders will be able to imbibe complimentary cock- “I commonly use block and stripe patterns to further enhance tails courtesy of Midnight Moon Moonshine, Cathead Vodka, and Four Roses Bourbon and all the guests will be treated to heavy hors d’oeuvres with white glove service courtesy of Ocean Catering Company. There will also be live music and much more. The point of all this extravagance is to give all the proceeds back to the Piedmont Park Conservancy, a non-profit organization that works with the city of Atlanta to preserve historic Piedmont Park. Raising over $60 million since it’s inception in 1989, the Conservancy has successfully restored the historic portion of the park. The Conservancy has also updated the entrances, expanded sections of the park, added more historic light poles and renovated all the bathrooms to become LEED certified among many other accomplishments. 20 // 08.13.2014

BU: Yeah, I thought, “I don’t believe in any of this,” when I was 12. I remember looking around the church – it was during sacrament meeting on Sunday – and I was like, “Oh my god, I don’t think I believe in this.” I started doubting. Within a year I was a full-on atheist. It was so liberating, and it really just made me feel more honest, more like myself. And I love that.

DA: I watched a montage of you humping stuff the other day. It really says something when there’s enough material for a whole gay montage.

I don’t think I’ve gone too far. I mean, in my DA: Last time we chatted, you opened up about opinion. But I don’t know. I’ve never really asked them! same-sex experiences you had early in your life. Did (Laughs) those experiences have anything to do with why you left the church? DA: You’ve kissed bandmates… BU: That was definitely part of it. Most of it was about the doctrine. After a while I realized if I’m going to believe in a god, I don’t want him to hate people that I love. I don’t want him to hate his children. If he’s saying that black people can’t have the priesthood till 1978, that doesn’t make sense to me; if being gay is an evil thing, that doesn’t make sense to me. All of these things didn’t add up. If that’s the club that I have to be in to feel exclusive and important, I don’t wanna be a part of it. So that was really it. It just didn’t coincide with the things that I believed in, and it was as simple as that.

Yeah, I’m straight. I like girls. But I can find a dude attractive. I didn’t really know. I’m just a horny individual.

BU: Oh, sure. I haven’t done it lately. I’ve just been locked in my own sweaty world. I think I feel bad putting my sweat on somebody else. I’m way too gross now. (Laughs) DA: How do you feel people responded to your “coming out”?

BU: I don’t think that mine necessarily was a coming out because I never had a problem (admitting it) if anyone would ask, but nobody ever asked me if I had ever made out with a guy. To me, it doesn’t really matter who you love or what you do with your personal life, but it made me happy to see that reflected in people’s comments and reactions to it – that most people who are smart and wise and open-minded can realize that, yeah, that doesn’t matter.

I still consider myself spiritual, and it’s a weird thing too. I know for a lot of people God is a great answer to a lot of things, and that’s totally fair. To me, I believe it’s bigger than that. To me, the universe is greater than it just being on one bearded man in the clouds who maybe created everything. I think it’s cheapening the experience. I’ve done countless trips – psychedelic trips DA: At the time, you told me it was a big deal for you – and that has opened up my mind, and I don’t think I know to come out. that much. And the more I experience, the less that I know that I know. BU: Because I had never been asked. I had never talked about it. It really was. I don’t ever wanna feel ashamed to be honest. I just realize I am so ignorant to what’s possibly out there, so I don’t ever wanna feel ashamed to just tell people who I am. I don’t want to limit myself to believing in one singular God. It only helps to be honest because you can take example from I’d like to think that it’s greater than that, that there is some people and realize, “Oh, I can totally be myself and just be proud mystery out there that I haven’t solved yet, and maybe never of who I am.” will. But I love pursuing that. That’s what “spiritual” is to me. Just being spiritual makes me feel deep, and I just love the way DA: Do you and your wife, Sarah, have the same taste it warms me up. in men? DA: What’s been your most fag pimpin’ moment on BU: God, I just honestly find some dudes straight up attractive. So stage? yeah, we talk about Ryan Gosling. We talk about Charlie Hunnam, davidatlanta.com // 27

because he’s a beautiful man. And I’m into old school too. I used to watch movies and be like, “That’s a good looking dude.” I can just appreciate when a dude is attractive. Paul Newman is just a good looking dude. I mean, Cool Hand Luke!

You’d hear rumors of the mob owning it, all these mafia ties, and it was like, “I wanna be in that world. I wanna have those ties. I wanna be a ‘goodfella.’ I wanna be the Ray Liotta to the fucking Paul Sorvino.” I always wanted to be in that world, and now I have it in the music world. I’ve got my closest DA: Is he someone you would commit a “fag sin” for? friends. We’ve got a gang. BU: (Laughs) You were just waiting to pull that shit out. You know, it’s so funny, because, honestly, when I was younger I was just curious. I wanted to try everything. I was 13, 14 and I wanted to try it. I was like, “I wonder, am I gay? I don’t know.” Between 13 and 15 – that was a big experimental time for me. I lost my virginity when I was 13.

DA: This fantasy you had as kid, where you imagined yourself as a hotshot – was it because you weren’t one as a kid? Were you bullied? BU: Oh yeah. DA: So you idealized yourself as something bigger than you felt?

DA: To a girl? BU: To a girl. I was just attracted to girls, but after messing around, I was just curious. I’m like, “I don’t know what I am or who I am yet. I wanna see what I’m into.” I didn’t really know. I spent a year or two seeing what works – a couple of tries (with guys) seeing what I like, what I don’t – and then after a while I realized, “Yeah, I’m straight. I like girls. But I can find a dude attractive.” I didn’t really know. I’m just a horny individual. DA: Sinéad O’Connor recently told me in regards to her sexuality, “It’s not about what gets my dick hard.” BU: That’s great. Well, it’s not about what gets my pussy wet… (Laughs) DA: What does the cover of your latest album, Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!, represent? BU: For this last record, Too Weird to Live, it really was just about times I had growing up in Vegas. I wanted to create that character. The person I am on the cover is not who I am. Even the smoking cigarettes – I’ve quit since then. But when I was a kid, that was the guy who ran around Vegas and owned it. He had a Liberace jacket and he was smoking a cigarette. He was owning the desert, he didn’t give a fuck, and the smoke was colored – that to me was the quintessential Vegas guy. DA: Is that you living out a childhood fantasy? BU: I wanted to be what I couldn’t have. What was forbidden. To me, the Strip was forbidden. Living there, there’s a huge Mormon community, but it’s mostly just trying to convert everybody. And most of it is just business-minded – I mean, Mormons are just businessmen, straight up, which is kind of crazy. But yeah, it was out of my curiosity as a kid. I really saw Vegas as this debaucherous gangster town, and I loved that fantastical view of thinking, “Who runs this city?” 28 // 08.13.2014

BU: Oh, sure. It came somewhat from the bullying, but the bullying – I never let them take it too far. I couldn’t stop them from kicking the shit out of me, which would happen once in a while. I think having people around me that were stronger and more supportive just helped me overcome that essentially … because fuck a bully! DA: How do you respond to bullies now, like Westboro, compared to when you were a kid? BU: Honestly, I do get that initial anger. I’ve gotten a lot better as time has gone on and as I’ve gotten older. I used to just lash out when I was a kid. I’d go home and hit the punching bag till my knuckles were bloody and be like, “I hate my life.” But then I realized I don’t have it that bad. I’m getting beat up because there’s something wrong with them. I didn’t do anything wrong. And it’s not easy, but in time you realize it’s not your fault. It’s definitely their problem and it just makes more sense to be a better example. That’s such a better victory. It’s more selfish, too, for me, because I’m like, “I wanna be the victor right now.” With Westboro, maybe it could change their mind. I just think it would be a good idea to include Westboro, you know? Bring them into the picnic. We’re gonna go to the gay picnic and have some cake. You guys want some cake?

elix is not one to hold his opinions to himself. He’ll be the first one to tell you to “maintain ur shit”, a phrase he uses often and with great impact among his customers at Ford Factory Lofts’ long time anybody-is-welcome bar Model T’s. The crowd is always eclectic and down-to-earth, and always happy to share their wisdom and crazy stories with you. What’s your favorite drink to make? At Model T’s it’s pretty simple…a beer and a shot. We have a chilled shot machine so pouring that perfect shot is only a thumb’s flick away. What do you like most about slinging drinks at Model T’s? I really like working happy hour. Then I don’t ever have to deal with any co-worker drama (not that Model T’s has much). Being a happy hour bartender makes it my own show. However Model T’s has three shifts from 9 or 10 a.m. till 3 a.m. except Sunday’s noon to midnight, so your always able to have a good time. What’s the craziest thing you’ve done for a customer behind the bar? I did a “bar-dance” once in the East Village at Dick’s Bar. I did get fifty bucks though… …Did you get naked? …Me? Not for that. I have some self-respect.

fairyscopes ARIES (March 20 – April 19):

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):

You won’t be hospitalized this week, but things may not go as planned. Things might be made all the more difficult as your motivation could limp along on Thursday and Friday. You’ll need to summon your energy and make a determined effort to face up to whatever is bothering you. It’s party time over the weekend!

Deja vu is not that Thai dish that you had two weeks ago. At times you could hit up against communication problems that might not yield easily to discussion or compromise. However, with a fabulous social scene showing up, time spent with friends can help ease any heartache.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):

There may be a power struggle going on, so be careful what you say if you want to come out of it looking good. All of that which you experience this weekend will be catalogued under “things not to do in public again”. Seems like damnation awaits you from every angle.

A fortunate trend provides freedom of action and the chance to showcase your skills and abilities to good effect. With a sizzling focus on career, opportunities abound for enhancing work and business success. Fun is a word that will score you few points in scrabble...but then when was life all about scrabble?

GEMINI (May 21- June 20):

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):

If you pick yourself up by your shoe-strings you are likely to fall flat on your ass. The good and the great come together today and miss you entirely during all their endeavors. Which is a bit sad, really. However there’s a lively social undertone this week encouraging you to pursue contacts, friendships, and memberships.

The urge to get away is strong, which could mean getting lost in a daydream, fantasy, good book, or movie. Equally, you’ll be eager to travel to new places and explore new horizons. Whether or not you can take a trip now, contemplating one for the future may give you something to look forward to.

CANCER (June 21- July 22):

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):

Directing your energy into the right channels brings opportunities for success. In this case, brainstorming moneymaking ideas and coming up with creative outlets for your talents could substantially increase your income. Butter your bread on both sides so that if the bread falls, you’ll be screwed no matter what.

Whether you want to or not, this week will have a journey in store for you. In addition, your social life looks livelier than has been in some time. Use this opportunity to network with folks who pull the strings and make the decisions.

LEO (July 23 – August 22):

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):

My gift to you is this wisdom: he who makes love at awkward angle, gets back problems for next day. You’re vibrating to the social buzz of summer and eager to mix and mingle with pals and associates. And you’re truly in your element with your astrological ruler, the Sun, in your sign.

While it won’t all be clear sailing in your career, a more focused and incisive frame of mind can make solid headway possible. When talking to others, you might need to ignore their words and instead go with your gut feelings, particularly when sussing out deals or job opportunities.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):

PISCES (February 19 – March 19):

Harmless fun may come back to harm you over the coming weeks. Tailors and Bodybuilders may have a surprise in store for you this week. Also keep on the lookout for butch hairdressers. Meditating and reflecting on your goals and dreams could be particularly rewarding, especially if you’ve been feeling uncertain about a course of action.

Where your job and lifestyle are concerned, whether you feel a restless stirring within or circumstances beyond your control provide the motivation, it’s to your advantage to embrace the notion of change. Regret can hurt you over a long period. Lament today, but tomorrow must be a day for anger and retribution.

No one ever said life was easy, but several people said you were.

Stop talking with your “girl friends” at the gym and do your squats already. Some of us don’t go to the gym to chat all day. You’ve got to have buns hun!

He’s rich as all get out, but he’s got a mullet… y’all know who I’m talking about!

Why do the same people always seem to be the one’s drunk in public? Have some selfrespect!

Can’t wait to stop uptucking this Guardians of the Galaxy boner! He looks like a low-end department store mannequin.

Vanity, vanity, all is vanity.

A mix of prints can be intriguing, but they can also lead to crazytown fast. I know it’s summer, but slow down on the patterns boys!

I do hope Frankie doesn’t get, ahem, backdoored this week on BB.

Look, man, I know we’re Facebook friends and all, but I don’t want to play any of these games so stop sending me requests.

Why do some straight people feel it’s appropriate to ask who’s the guy and who’s the girl? Neither. We’re both men.
