A Note from the

Editor

Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained The unifying theme for this issue has to be growth, or maybe it’s seizing opportunities. With hindsight being 20/20, it’s easy to see where missed opportunities have had great effect. When Tom Selleck declined the role on Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford stepped in and movie history was spared an Indiana Jones with a sweet ‘stache. If Christopher Columbus had never pushed the boundaries of the known world, or if Madonna had never explored the depths of human depravity and sexuality, where would we be now? What if the Anaconda really didn’t want none of Nicki Minaj’s ass? What if Norma Ray hadn’t screamed “Union”? Maybe Scotland will miss out on incredible opportunities, because they voted ‘no’ to their independence from the United Kingdom. AID Atlanta isn’t missing an opportunity. They are renovating their main Atlanta office, expanding in-house services, and tackling a major gap in many HIV/AIDS treatments. I’m proud of them for realizing that they could do more and be more, and then going out and doing it. Actor John Lithgow decided to seize an opportunity to play a role that potentially could have great impact on the way straight people may perceive gay relationships. He believes Love is Strange has an important story to tell and shares that experience and outlook with David this week. Alan Collins of the Heretic and Matt Bearracuda of Bearracuda have teamed up to create an exciting new cruise event early next year. They knew they had a potentially great opportunity when cruisebrothers.com approached them with the idea of creating a bear-centric cruise. Keep your eyes and your minds open to the great possibilities that life can present you. It’s when people rise above the expectations and seize the opportunity that milestones truly are reached.

For instance, I recently attended the Lantern Parade on the Beltline, and was excited enough about the 90 minute procession, that I want to be in it next year. If you haven’t been to see or partake in the night time fun, by all means make sure you do in September of 2015. It’s free!! And we all know Atlantans love anything free. Also scheduled later this month are Japanfest, TomorrowWorld, and the Fall Folklife Festivals; all nice warm ups to the tons of stuff to do in October. (I’m looking at you Netherworld, Atlanta Pride, Corn Mazes, Food & Wine festivals, and of course...Halloween!!) So no matter if it’s getting your ‘mums ready for planting, hoping that this is the last mow of the season, or you’re beginning to eyeball those pumpkins at the farmer’s market; you can always find me arguing with the employees at the Starbucks as to why they never have any of their Fall inspired baked goods that are emblazoned all over their marketing posters. Yep, it’s cinnamon time! Bring on the fire pits and s’mores, and let’s get ready to obsess over some wicked delights this coming Fall season.

All Hail, the Fun of Fall. Why are we so obsessed with the changing of the seasons? Is it that hopeful relief of changing temperatures, or could it be that we’re that much closer to some of the more extreme themed holiday celebrations? Or hell, maybe it’s just the blissful absence of all those pesky kids now that school is back in session. (Yeah, college students are kids too.) I don’t know about your personal life kind reader, but I know I always look forward to cooler nights, and changing my wardrobe. (During the boiling Atlanta summers, I am never seen in anything more high fashion than Tshirts and flip flops.) so, I easily imagine you are similarly minded about Atlanta’s seasons of fashion as well. In the Fall, we all get to start pulling the earth tones and long sleeves out of the closet, and that’s always a happy thought. First, before we welcome the Fall season, I must say a forlorn goodbye to scraping my fat middle-aged ass along the tubing routes of Helen, Ga. and embrace the ideas of upcoming Oktoberfests!! A fond farewell to those amazing bear pool parties that great friends throw each Summer. And wipe away the tears shed, now that Dragon Con 2014 is really truly over. Even though it’s just the end of September, you can smell that Fall is in the air, and scheduled to arrive around a continually rainy corner in just a few short weeks. And I’m ready for it! I’m always on high alert for the festivals and events that mark that Fall is indeed approaching. (We all know outdoor events are a lot more comfortable when the temperatures aren’t so damn hot.) 10 // 09.24.2014

A Fur-tastic Voyage Bearracuda Heretic Cruise

S

oon, the leaves will begin their color swatch switches and you’ll be searching for sweaters from the closet in preparation for sliding temperatures, signaling that winter lies just beyond the slippery slope of September. While we clutch our pearls praying that Atlanta will be spared from another Snowpocalypse, Heretic’s Alan Collins and Bearracuda founder Matt Bearracuda aren’t taking any chances as they join forces for a near-global warming party – their fur-tastic voyage – the Inaugural Bearracuda Heretic Cruise, setting sail January 31 – February 7, 2015. Having collaborated on a number of events over the past four years, Collins and Bearracuda started tossing the idea of doing a joint venture cruise last summer. Already hosting some of the city’s hottest parties, the bear-centric party groups sets their sights on the Caribbean high seas in hopes of bringing their community out of hibernation during the brutal winter months. “Matt and I have worked together for 4 years”, Collins says. “He’s brought thousands of furry hotties through our doors. He’s a genius promoter, I love to work with. When I was approached by Cruisebrothers.com, about doing a cruise, the first call I made was to Matt. At the time, the whole idea sounded crazy – mainly because neither one of us had even been on a cruise! We had a few meetings and the next thing we knew, we were launching bearsoverboard.com.” Imagine a ship full of fun, furry friends, widely acclaimed DJs and parties, as well as top-notch cruise ship services and a travel route that shows you some of the Caribbean’s best … and all at a time when Atlanta is in the throes of winter. Sounds pretty hot, huh?

By Jonathan Bugg but the Bearracuda Heretic Cruise itinerary really begins upon one of Celebrity’s newest ships, the Reflection. Boasting a number of exciting, new features such as an expanded deck plan, 72 additional staterooms as well as more seating in the main and specialty restaurants, more sun lounges on the pool deck, and more seats in the theatre, the 3,030-passenger Reflection has enough room for your entire sleuth. It’s your vacation, so you’ll want to choose your own path but the ship features a number of drink, food and art highlights to give your vacation a shot of variety. Try Michael’s Club and their 50 international craft beer selections. Can you say boat beer bust? Or celebrate the flavorful joys of outdoor grilling with a medium-rare slab of steak in the Lawn Club Grill. Or take a load off and learn from an ArtCenter South Florida Master Artist giving various painting and drawing classes. Whatever you do during the day, be prepared to throw down at night. With three late-night dance parties planned for their expansive main pool deck and one farewell T-dance on the Solstice deck, Collins and Bearracuda are bringing the beats you’ve danced your ass off to at their hometown parties. “Heretic and Bearracuda are known for our kick ass events and world class DJ’s”, explains Collins. “We’re keeping the bar raised, bringing the big guns, Tony Moran and Paul Goodyear.”

DJ/producer Tony Moran, who just recently performed a knockout set at Jungle’s Cosplay party, is one of the cruise headliners on tap. This New Yorker is known throughout the world for his thunderous beats and for dominating the Billboard charts for the past few decades. Get ready to bump and grind with fur-tastic new friends all through the night to The seven-day cruise will start in sunny and sexy Miami be- his hard-hitting tribal house anthems. fore making stops in San Juan, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten 14 // 09.24.2014

Joining Moran, Australian DJ Paul Goodyear will be bringing his newly minted “SanFranDisko style” aboard to titillate your auditory senses. His current discography includes around 400 releases as a remixer, writer and producer, so you know you’re in for an incredible. Rounding out the onboard talent is the infamously irreverent Peaches Christ . This San Francisco treat will be your host for all your gay bingo and gay trivia shows. You never know what will come out of Peaches mouth (though we know what probably goes into it), so get ready for a bitchin’ bingo. So we’ve sold you on the travel, the ship and the entertaining lineup, but what about the booze? Those who book their outside cabin cruise package before October 5 will be eligible for Celebrity’s Free Drink package. So what are you waiting for? Cruise packages are currently on sale and additional events are being announced as the departure date nears. Those interested in learning more can check out a webinar designed to provide more event details and answer any questions on Sunday, September 28 at 8 p.m. EST. Check out http://whoozin.com/ Events/EventU.aspx?e=XGN-AXW-7NRT for webinar details. While the cruise ship isn’t all gay, the Bearracuda Heretic Cruise will be one of the largest groups aboard. All of the scheduled onboard events will be private and available only to members of the group. So this winter it’s bon voyage to the cold of Atlanta, and bonjour to the warm ocean breezes of the Caribbean. Join your furry friends from around the globe in a week of decadent debauchery by booking your cabin at www.bearsoverboard.com.

The World According to

John Lithgow ‘Love Is Strange’ actor on his ‘defiance of prejudice’ and humanizing gay rights photos: Sony Classics

T

By Chris Azzopardi

here’s a beautiful moment in Ira Sachs’ indie hit Love Is Strange involving two older men – a New York couple, forced to live apart after one of them loses his job, tearfully embraces. Life-changing? No. But that’s the point: Its simplicity is a revelation.

The narrative hones in on these vignettes of their life together, which says a lot about relationships – that, no matter who’s experiencing it, love is love...

During a recent chat with Lithgow, the actor discussed being touched by the gay community’s response to Love Is Strange, the underrepresentation of LGBT people in film, and his groundbreaking turn as a trans woman alongside Robin Williams in The World According to Garp.

JL: Oh, there are so many of them! I think the finest scene is right toward the end: the scene in Julius bar, followed by their walk through the streets of the West Village. It’s the moment when Ben apologizes to George for being less monogamous and less faithful, and yet reassures him and acknowledges the fact that they are essential to each other. I think that’s a wonderful scene, and I love the fact that that scene itself is shot with humor – there are two moments in that scene where they laugh uncontrollably. The way it swings back and forth between the serious and the silly just seems to define their relationship in so many ways. And, as they salute their old friend Frank – it’s quite clear what happened to Frank – that scene is also acknowledging the loss they feel because of AIDS.

... and it’s complicated and it’s messy, but they are the luckiest people in the film because their relationship has survived and That distinctly post-gay perspective is what attracted John they’re inseparable. They’re so essential to each other. Lithgow to the role of Uncle Ben, an elderly artist adjusting to life away from his husband, George (Alfred Molina), after financial DA: Is there a particular exchange between Ben and woes drive them into separate residences. George that left an impression on you?

David Atlanta: Love Is Strange is resonating with the gay community on a very personal level, especially now that many of these longtime gay and lesbian couples are able to wed. For you, what does it mean to be part of a film that means so much to the gay community? John Lithgow: It’s extremely moving to me. Even if the whole same-sex marriage issue had not become such a major issue of our times, this would still be a very, very moving film just by virtue of the fact that it is a portrait of a 40-year-long relationship. And since it’s a 40-year-long relationship between two gay men, there is such a history there: They’ve been through 40 extraordinary years; they’ve seen the terrible scourge of AIDS in the ’80s and ’90s; between them they’ve lost scours, if not 100s, of friends; they’ve somehow survived, and they have seen the sort of awakenings of freedom – this slow emergence from secondclass citizenship through these gay marriage initiatives. The great thing is, it puts a human face on it. You see real people. These are the people who are really directly affected by it, and I just find it terribly moving. 20 // 09.24.2014

DA: You and Alfred have such a rapport – not just in the film, but in real life. You’ve been friends for years. But besides the obvious answer – that it’s called acting – how do you take that platonic affection for each other to the next level? JL: It’s impossible to be self-conscious with Alfred. Both of us have done a lot of acting, and so it takes an awful lot to throw us. But it’s very rare that you find an actor that you feel so completely free with, so unself-conscious with, and both of us share a certain quality as actors. We’re both very serious actors who are also very frivolous people. (Laughs) We love to laugh, and yet we take acting very seriously – that gives you a lot of reference

JL: And yet, even in that moment you can tell – because of a beautiful little performance by John Cullum as the priest – he doesn’t want to be doing this. He hates to do this. By that very fact you get the sense that this can’t stand 10 years from now. People are not gonna be fired by the Catholic Church for having a gay lifestyle. So, I think it’s a hopeful film. DA: I do hope that’s the case. points in playing a love relationship. You can’t have a relationship JL: They simply can’t keep doing this. They just can’t. AID Atlanta: Huge In-House Expansions photo: Russ Youngblood

I

t’s an understatement to say that AID Atlanta has been a valuable entity and friend to our LGBT community for many years. The organization has proven itself to be a social impact organization that provides education and support services for those living with HIV and AIDS. Like all organizations, AID Atlanta has experienced and lived through various stages of change and development. Throughout their 32 years of service they have held to their pledge of remaining a grassroots organization dedicated to providing support, care, and assistance for all who come through their doors. Today, not only are their doors new and polished, their entire main facility has been beautifully transformed to provide comprehensive care that will effectively serve Metro-Atlanta residents and beyond. To celebrate AID Atlanta’s expansion, they are planning a series of events to unveil its new facility. When the first open house happens on October 9, the Metro Atlanta community will not only see physical changes, but they will hear about the programmatic changes underway that have been suggested by the community.

26 // 09.24.2014

Under thoughtful planning and leadership they have successfully developed their offering which includes the type of services that make this nonprofit the most comprehensive HIV/ AIDS organizations in the Southeast. Today, AID Atlanta serves 17 locations in 20 counties with their newly expanded and remodeled main location on Peachtree Street in Atlanta. AID Atlanta CEO, Dr. Jose RodriguezDiaz notes, “Since 1982 AID Atlanta has served countless people throughout Metro Atlanta affected by HIV/ AIDS. These changes allow us to open our hearts and doors at all of our locations to serve even more people. This transformation of AID Atlanta allows us to have even more community partnerships. This is something that AID Atlanta, from the board to the staff and our key supporters, have upheld as a priority.” “As we transform AID Atlanta, we are investing in our programs that have already proven to be effective, as well as adding new programs, to provide a more holistic approach to treating to those impacted by HIV/AIDS. Our goal is to assist anyone that needs access to quality care, education and prevention services to help them live a healthy life.”

There are lots of great LGBT-friendly destinations to consider this fall, many of which are more affordable than they were just a month ago. What new adventures should be on your itinerary? Peep my picks below, and start planning your getaway today.

1

By Mikey Rox Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta

With the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains on one side and Mexico’s picturesque Bay of Banderas on the other, the four-diamond, luxury beachfront CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa is a sight to behold. And now that it’s become the first hotel in the area to earn a certification in LGBT Service Excellence from Out Now Global, there’s no reason to consider any other accommodations. Available experiences include cultural immersion programs, tequila tastings, voluntourism opportunities like sea-turtle rescue programs, beachside dining, and more. Rates start at an eye-rubbing $89 per night so you can live la vida loca without going broke-a.

2

Finger Lakes, N.Y.

If you’re a fan of fall foliage and all the cozy activities associated with the season, you’ll feel at home in the Finger Lakes region of New York, which has several LGBT-friendly hotels certified by PurplesRoofs. com. Trevin Farms in Sudbury, VT

3

Washington, D.C.

4

Vermont

The nation’s capital might not seem like an attractive place to kick your merry gay feet up, but you might be surprised to learn that the District of Columbia was recently voted one of the most gay-friendly cities in America. The Embassy Row Hotel, located in the Dupont Circle gayborhood of D.C., is embracing that title by welcoming with open arms LGBT travelers looking for a getaway with a splash of urban glitz and glamour. There are more than 80 restaurants, galleries and retail shops within steps of the hotel, and it now offers the only rooftop pool and terrace in the area. Special deals run occasionally (like book two nights, get the third free), and the Drag Queen Brunch Package is three snaps in a Z-formation.

For those who enjoy staying healthy and active, New Life Hiking Spa has just what the doctor ordered. This multi-award-winning, all-inclusive and affordable resort features packages that range from the two- to four-night Mini Vacation, five- to 10-night Jump Start Getaway, and the 11-or-more-night Weight Loss Retreat. Packages start at $219 and include lodging, meals, full days of activities, and spa services. If you’re not the type to sit around and meditate, however, gay-owned Trevin Farms in Sudbury, Vt., is probably more your speed. At this “Green Hotel in the Green Mountain State,” you can learn about today’s small farms, milk goats, make cheese, and party like it’s 1899 for $110 per night and up.

5

West Virginia

Elkhorn Inn & Theater

Feeling a bit rugged this autumn? Roll up your sleeves in McDowell County, W. Va., where you can get down and dirty with ATV riding, world-class trout fishing, railfanning, visits to historical sites like the Pocahontas Exhibition Coal Mine, state parks and forests, and golf (which isn’t that rugged, but still fun nonetheless). To lay your pretty homo head at night, consider the Elkhorn Inn & Theater, a 14-guest room, historic “Coal Heritage Trail” inn in Landgraff, the owners of which say has “always been LGBT friendly!” Rates start at $120 per night for free continental breakfast and charming rooms that feature antique claw-foot tubs.

6

Palm Springs, Cali.

Did you know that it’s estimated that between 30 and 50 percent of Palm Springs residents are LGBT? It goes without saying that this vacation destination is LGBT friendly, of course, but there’s more to the famed desert resort city than meets the eye. For starters, it offers one of the largest selections of gay-owned and affordable B&Bs in the world; you really can’t go wrong. Throw in the Cinema Diverse LGBT Festival (September); Greater Palm Springs Pride Weekend (November); an array of cultural, outdoor, and low-cost adventure options, and you’ve got an autumn weekend to remember.

7

Charlotte, N.C.

Charlotte, N.C., probably isn’t a place that pops into your head when you’re considering a gay-friendly getaway – but maybe it should be. The Queen City (how fitting, right?) recently hosted one of the largest gay pride festivals in the Southeast with more than 100,000 attendees, and there are innumerable LGBT-friendly activities to fill your must-do-and-see list, like watching gay athletes in action on the Charlotte Royals rugby team and the Charlotte Roller Girls derby team; catching LGBT-focused performances by the Charlotte Pride Band and Gay Men’s Chorus of Charlotte; dining at historic local restaurants; and exploring the nightlife scene with stops at The Scorpio, Petra’s Piano Bar & Cabaret, and Bar 316. 32 // 09.24.2014

hancey is definitely one of the friendliest bartenders around. He’s been working at the Atlanta institution Burkhart’s for a total of ten years. Chancey says he enjoys working at Burkhart’s not only because the staff is now like a family to him, but also because he has become very close to many of the customers. To be a great bartender, one has to be precise in the mixology, fearless in the face of daunting customers, and friendly to a fault. Chancey is all of those things and more. What’s your favorite drink to make? Lately this summer, I’ve come to enjoy the Astro-Pop. It looks and tastes just like the childhood ice cream treat. I layer Grenadine, Absolut Raspberri vodka and sour mix, and then chilled Blue Curacao. People are always amazed when they take their first sip. Do you have a favorite customer? Since I started at Burkhart’s, I’ve become friends with so many people, but I really just adore Will and Mark. They’ve been a couple for over 14 years and have been loyal customers of mine since the very first day. What’s the weirdest drink you’ve ever made? One time this guy asked for a Dirty Sailor. I didn’t know what it was until he explained it to me. It’s totally disgusting, but I ended up making two for him. You take a shot of Cuervo and then squeeze a packet of mayonnaise on top. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, he had me make him a White Russian with Bacon flavored vodka. I almost gagged on that one just smelling it!

This Week in Theaters PRIDE: Inspired by the true story of a London gay activist group that decides to help miners during the lengthy strike of the National Union of Miners. The union decides to reject the LGBT group’s help, propelling the disenfranchised but not defeated activists to a small mining village to begin helping on a smaller level. The story is great and will have you cheering out loud many times through the film. You’ll want to cheer the actors as well, especially Imelda Staunton and Bill Nighy. The Equalizer: McCall (Denzel Washington) is a former black ops commando who has faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston. However, he comes out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters. As he serves vengeance against those who brutalize the helpless, McCall’s desire for justice is reawakened.

ARIES (Mar. 20 – Apr. 19): Your fantasy world is piqued. Maintain a certain amount of control over your emotions or they may get the better of you. You could find yourself in a cloud of confusion. Avoid this by making an effort to ground yourself. Make sure your actions result from an equal balance between thought and emotion.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): Keeping your emotions in balance is going to be key. Don’t get swept away by a fanciful situation that could send your mind spinning. Maintain self-control. Give yourself a break and avoid excess alcohol or any sort of drug use. It will be hard enough to keep your mind clear without them.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 20): There may be an area of your life that seems completely fanciful now. You may no longer be sure of the reality of the situation. This week’s energies will bring these issues into focus. Your emotions are especially heightened and will seem clouded. Stay balanced and gain perspective on the situation.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): You may get the feeling that you’re operating in an emotional crossfire this week. On the one hand, you may have a selfish feeling that demands attention from others. You may sense the need to work to serve others. Realize that both of these energies are valid and deserve your attention. Balance is the key.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): You may feel like you’re running into a brick wall at every turn. The intensity of the week may have you feeling like you’re in a pressure cooker. Try not to blow things out of proportion. Realize that much of the drama is a figment of your imagination. Clear away the clouds and get to the heart of the matter.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19): Your fantasy life is especially active this week, so enjoy this little break into your dream world. Coming back to reality may be difficult. Keep tabs on your emotions. The impressions you receive from the outside world may not be accurate today. Keep your wits and try not to get caught up in alcohol.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): You’ll enjoy a week or so of high spirits and friendly interactions. Although it may not seem like it. Your emotions may become cloudy and it might seem like people are working against you. Realize that much of this silly paranoia comes more from your emotional insecurity than plots against you.

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): Bask in the sunshine of today. Focus on the positive aspects of your life. There’s a great deal of opportunity open at this time. The key to taking advantage of this is to stay close to the things that truly make you happy. The details will work themselves out. Have faith that you will succeed and you will.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): You’re in a fun-loving and jovial mood this week. The one caveat is that your emotions may be a bit clouded. You may not have the most accurate impression of a situation. You might feel that people have the wrong impression of you. Try not to feel insecure. Have confidence in yourself and take the lead.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): Your nature is to serve others, but in order to maintain that energy, make sure that you’re taken care of as well. Offer extra hugs to the people you love. In work-related issues, make sure that you aren’t biting off more than you can chew. Delegate. Pamper yourself tonight with a hot bath and a good meal.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): You may seem groggy and your head could be a bit cloudy, but try not to let this stop you from getting your work done. Much of what you perceive may not exactly correlate with reality. You may have a strong desire to escape into a fantasy world. Try to keep both feet on the ground.

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 19): You may have a strange paranoia that people are out to get you. Your emotions are more than likely getting the better of you. The reality of the situation is much different than your sensitive emotions perceive. Avoid the tendency to escape into this fantasy world by going out for the sake of going out.
