A Note from the

Editor This Week

Finding a sense of community in Atlanta is not hard. Or at least it wasn’t for me (probably because of my job title). I have heard differing stories from people stating that it took them a year or more to find their place in Atlanta. Finding a community of friends can be a difficult task. Some make up their own, some bring it with them. Lisa Kudrow’s character Valerie Cherish makes up her own community by any means necessary in the anticipated second season of The Comeback, where they portray a comedy about the making of a reality show about the making of an HBO comedy about the making of a network sitcom. Lisa opens up to David about the challenges and thrills of bringing Valerie back to life, and the possibility of Valerie judging RuPaul’s Drag Race one day. Now in the middle of it’s run, Cirque Du Soleil’s Amaluna brings a whole community with them. I was able to go behind the scenes and see first hand how they’ve created a support system, making their 50-week performance

schedules possible. Not only are the performers able to leave it all behind and literally run away with the circus, but also the myriad of support staff that together pack it all up and live on the road. See how that is possible later in the magazine. As for me, I find that my community is all around me, and whoever is around me. I’m finding the joy in meeting everybody, and the challenges of finding my place in this wonderful city. I do find solace in the Timiteo photo spread this week. Just looking at hot clothes on an even hotter guy will make everyone warm and fuzzy. Please Enjoy,

Jonathan Bugg

Run Away with the Circus Behind the Scenes with Amaluna

A

t one point in our lives, most of us have thought how much fun it would be to run away with the circus. For most of us though, this dream never materializes. Cirque du Soleil’s latest show “Amaluna” invites Atlanta audiences to experience a mystical world filled with breathtaking stunts, elaborate costumes and a story that celebrates the strength of women. I got the very special privilege of being invited to see behind-thescenes what the everyday life is like for not only the circus performers, but the expansive support staff that travels all over the world with Cirque Du Soleil – Amaluna. I was surprised by the dedication and sacrifice it takes to be in this Cirque family.

Performers: Besides being dedicated athletes they, along with all of the traveling Cirque staff, are on the road for 50 weeks out of the year. Even after they work to develop their acts before the tour begins, they are constantly training and adding to their circus repertoire. The reason for this is to always keep their act fresh and the performers interested. That means that not every show is the same; Amaluna evolves constantly. To compensate for the everchanging show, the all-girl Amaluna band follows visual cues and has mastered the art of vamping. So even for the band, each performance is unique. One might think that there is a team of professional makeup artists and dressers behind the curtains helping each performer visually look the part for each show, but every performer is given an extensive crash-course in there own makeup and wardrobe regime. Each character in Amaluna is given a personalized, step-by-step illustrated guidebook to follow to achieve their consistently beautiful appearance. Accommodations: Amaluna shows generally run between four and ten weeks in every town. Accommodations have to be planned well in advance. Generally, Amaluna staff would stay in an extended stay motel/hotel with 12 // 11.12.2014

as many of the creature comforts possible. In Atlanta, Amaluna went grand and was able to secure rooms at the Georgian Terrace, one of midtown’s loveliest and historic hotels. Since there are shows every night of the week except for Mondays, getting the hell out of dodge is a big desire for all the staff and cast. Fortunately Atlanta has them covered with a plethora of sites and activities inside and outside the perimeter. Costumes: All of the Cirque show’s costumes are designed and created in Montreal, Canada. The Head of Wardrobe, Larry Edwards explains that for the Amaluna show, the designers wanted to reflect the nature that is represented in this island adventure. Therefore in many cases natural textiles were used. Specially treated leather bolero jackets were created that are not only washable, but painted with metallic gold paints on certain areas for design. An interesting point to note is that everything worn against the skin – and that’s most everything – must be washed nightly after a show. A special team of behind the scenes workers will wash and repair everything between shows. Since these lavish and hard working costumes are washed so much, almost everything will get recreated again in Montreal and then sent to each new city venue. Support Staff: Along with what the audience sees on the stage every night, there are a host of support staff that make those performances possible. Amaluna takes with it everywhere accountants, trainers, medical and conditioning professionals, costumers, PR representatives, and of course Artist Director of the show, Franck Hanselman, who kindly sat down with me and shared his perspective. “Having the ability to take our loved one’s on the road makes all the d i f f e r e n c e ,” Hanselman states. Cirque employees can take a “partner” with them. Sometimes their partners also find a position in Cirque. This can be anything from ticket sales to concessions. You can catch the wonders of Amaluna until November 30 at Grand Chapiteau in Atlantic Station. 14 // 11.12.2014

A Comeback to

Cherish

LK: I’ve been asking myself that too – not cause it’s a mystery, but I wonder why. I was watching Will & Grace once and there was this hilarious episode where Karen’s at a theater and she throws her flask and it hits someone in the head, and there’s this joke that gay men wouldn’t care Lisa Kudrow on Valerie’s return, because, “Eh, all in a day.” (Laughs) Getting, like, smacked ‘superhuman’ gays and the future of with something is “all in a day.” So I wonder if that’s what Romy and Michele it is – because Valerie gets, you know, humiliated – or humiliates herself – all the time. And it’s like, “Yeah, well, Ten years without our favorite cupcake-wearing gonzo, that’s the world.” Valerie Cherish, is 10 years too long. But the wait’s over. You were heard. The other thing that I love about Valerie is, “All right, someone said something not nice, but you know what, can’t use A decade after The Comeback first premiered, the hilariously that. Got this other thing I gotta do.” She just ignores that cringe-y HBO trailblazer that lasted just one season in 2005 that happened and keeps going. – and starred Lisa Kudrow as Val, a D-lister reaching for (everything underneath) the stars – returns to the network with DA: When was it first apparent to you that gays the Friends actress back as our beloved hot mess. were on board with The Comeback? Did you know instantly? David Atlanta: Lisa, you don’t know how tempting it is to say “hello” three times to you right now. How LK: Yeah, pretty much. (The Comeback co-creator) Michael often do people quote Valerie in your presence? Patrick King said, “You understand how this will go: First And how often are they gay men? it’s gonna be the gays, then the women, then everyone else.” Lisa Kudrow: (Laughs) Frequently and frequently. You know who the next group is after gay men? College students. DA: RuPaul makes a cameo in the pilot episode…

BY CHRIS AZZOPARDI

DA: Are you surprised by that?

LK: I know. Oh my god – so good!

LK: I was surprised… until I got used to it! But it’s fantastic. That’s really thrilling, and then it struck me: “Well, of course! They grew up with Housewives of everywhere, and people humiliating themselves on reality TV.” When The Comeback first came out, I think that gay men were the only ones who were like, “Yes. I understand. I get it. It’s great, and I understand.” (Laughs)

DA: This means that Valerie could appear as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, right?

You know, those are the people I care about the most – the people who really loved the show. That was my only fear after it was all done. Doing it, writing it, shooting it, it was, “Yeah, this is right, this is right.” Then afterwards, “Uh oh, what if it’s not?”

DA: And you obviously shouldn’t. All I’m saying is that I see many opportunities for you to say, “Note to self: I don’t need to see that!”

LK: You know, I’ve been asked to, but I don’t know how Valerie works on a talk show or as a judge. I don’t know. I’m thinking about it. I’m trying to figure out how it works. I don’t wanna say no!

LK: (Laughs) But she could say all kinds of – I don’t know what we’re allowed to (say on Drag Race). I mean, she’s DA: When it comes to Valerie Cherish, what is it indelicate and gets things wrong and, you know, I don’t about her exactly that we gay men are so drawn to? know how offensive she’s gonna be. 18 // 11.12.2014

DA: Valerie is surrounded by gays, and so much of your career has been gay adjacent. You did Happy Endings. You turned Meryl Streep into a gay conversion therapist for Web Therapy. And then, of course, there’s The Comeback. Are you as immersed in the gay community as your career would lead us to believe? LK: Yes and no. The people I work with are gay. I don’t know who I’m going to offend by leaving them out, but I need to say that I think gay men are superior beings in my mind. I do believe that. DA: I would love to hear why. LK: It’s all so tricky. I studied biology and the brains are anatomically different. They just are. There’s a stronger connection with the corpus callosum (in gay men). The two sides of the brain communicate better than a straight man’s, and I think that has to be really important. They’re not women – they’re still men – and women also have thicker corpus callosums, so I think it’s the combination of those qualities that makes them like a superhuman to me. DA: Even more apparent during this season of The Comeback is the inherent commentary on celebrity culture and age and gender discrimination. When it comes to ageism in the industry – the fact that there are so many talented older actresses not getting starring roles – what do you hope The Comeback accomplishes in spotlighting that issue? LK: I don’t know what to say about that. It’s something that just is. I think it’s gonna be a much longer process. I’m really not a revolutionary-type personality, you know what I mean? I’m not the activist type, but mmm, my god. I’m really bad at this – communicating this stuff. But we still… we still… (Laughs) Women still have a different place in our society, and it’s changing slowly but it’s still real slow. Because we’re so interested in the male audience more than the female audience, the requirement for women in entertainment is that she turn men on. That really hasn’t photo: Gilles Toucas changed much.

“...I need to say that I think gay men are superior beings in my mind. I do believe that.” davidatlanta.com // 19

DA: That’s particularly the focus of the third epi- you. Good note.” I constantly try to work against that sode when – spoiler alert – you simulate oral sex judgmental part of me, and it’s not (easy), especially on Seth Rogen. when it’s the judgmental part that gives you your sense of humor. LK: Right! And then you have the two (completely naked) girls standing there for an uncomfortably long time. DA: And all this is research for The Comeback, of course. DA: Did it feel uncomfortable for you on set? LK: Well, yeah, I can’t really say that. (Laughs) It’s not LK: Well, the girls seemed OK. But, you know, (it’s) always research, but I am fascinated. I also do have this other just about making sure everyone’s being treated with respect, theory that, thanks to those Housewives, we finally do right? have a point of reference for how women behave. We need to. It can’t just be DA: Have you worked reasonable, good behavwith someone like Valior, because that’s how erie Cherish? we depict the downtrodden so that no one thinks LK: Yes! These people exwe’re sexist or racist, so ist. There were people who you end up with all of were like, “Oh, I think I these subgroups in our know who this is,” and the society that have to be answer is, “You don’t know dull. They’re not allowed who this is, because this to have any flaws, otherisn’t one person.” wise whoever wrote (that depiction) is accused DA: What do you have of having bad feelings photo: HBO in common with Val? about them. To me, that’s when things are finally LK: Well, a lot. I think I OK – when everyone’s do have a thing where, if allowed to have flaws desomething negative is happicted in entertainment. pening and it’s not serving me, then I’m really not DA: Mira Sorvino regonna let it in and address cently brought up it because I gotta keep goa sequel to Romy ing. If something’s happenand Michele’s High ing that’s negative, I try to School Reunion. What are your think, “What’s OK about thoughts on one, and this?” so that I don’t get do you think it’ll hapdistracted by having to do pen at this point? something about that. DA: Which is exactly a Val characteristic.

LK: I have no idea. Robin Schiff wrote and produced Romy and Michele, LK: Right. And then it’s just exaggerated and height- and we all did get together years ago with a great idea: Romy and Michele Get Married. And yeah, Disney wasn’t ened in her. interested in it at the time. Now, I don’t know what it DA: Do you watch reality shows? Are you a fan would be. My worry is, you know, wouldn’t it involve plastic surgery? (Laughs) at all? photo: HBO

LK: I do watch them. They’re so fascinating to me. I like Top Chef, Project Runway – still like that. I watch America’s Next Top Model. And then I watch the Housewives. I watch certain Housewives of places.

DA: With a sequel like Romy and Michele Get Married, does that mean they end up being lesbian lovers because of the pact they made to marry each other in the original?

I am fascinated with the level of criticism young people can handle. I could not have handled it. I think I would’ve shriveled up in a ball, so on one level I really admire the Teflon part of them that’s able to say, “OK. Thank

LK: No, they’re not, but that’s always the other meaning. Because that’s the relationship. That is the relationship. But I think by now it’d have to be Romy and Michele Get Divorced… Again.

ARIES (March 20 – April 19):

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22):

It’s very possible that you will want to take a step back this week in order to take a closer look at your relationships. Your address book is full of names. Your phone rings off the hook. You receive tons of texts and emails every day. Yet isn’t it funny that you feel alone?

You see new horizons. It’s possible that the changes you’ve been going through lately aren’t completely finished. You may even have a hard time keeping yourself from running away from it all. Use this week to think about what you want. Things aren’t completely clear.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21):

If you feel you’ve been looking to the past lately, it’s in order to liberate yourself from it. You may feel like revisiting your childhood or rekindling certain relationships with old friends. Looking backward isn’t the best way to move toward the future. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be!

You hide your emotional needs from others. You need to be able to trust someone in order to share your feelings. They have to guess at your deepest secrets. Today you could save a lot of time in your love life if you just tell your partner what you want out of your relationship.

GEMINI (May 21- June 20):

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20):

Sometimes your relationships are like magnets. When you want to get close, the other person tries to get away from you. When you take a step back, he or she runs back into your life. Human nature is complex. Right now you’re probably taking a step back, although you haven’t given up completely.

This week you may want to change some of the moral and social values that get in the way of relationships. After surmounting these kinds of obstacles yourself, and watching others struggle with them, you’ve decided that it’s time to do away with them once and for all.

CANCER (June 21- July 22):

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19):

You’re entering a period of doubt, especially about your love life. You like your relationships and feelings to be clear. You may think a lot about your relationships over the next few days. Are you sure you’ve chosen the right person? Are his or her feelings sincere? Could you live without this person?

The people around you sometimes have a hard time understanding where you’re going. You’re living in an imaginary world that has little to do with reality. If you decide to stay home and lie around the house, you will have no problems. If you have to go to work, try to be as clear as possible with others.

LEO (July 23 – August 22):

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18):

For a month you may have had problems communicating with the people close to you. This is nothing to worry about, yet it might make you feel off balance. This is a great week to settle conflicts from the last month or make your feelings clear to other people.

You may have doubts over the next few days. Don’t make any important decisions about your future during this relatively unproductive period. If someone in your personal life asks you to make more of a commitment, you may be tempted to put on the brakes without really knowing why. Wait a while before answering this kind of question.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22):

PISCES (February 19 – March 19):

You have a tendency to live your life vicariously through your partner. This week you may come to the realization that this isn’t healthy for you. You may realize that you give more of yourself than you get back, draining you of energy. In fact, you’re almost completely out. Be selfish this week.

What are you afraid of, Pisces? Is it contact with other people? It’s as if an invisible rope were holding you back from getting close to people, or worse, pulling you back. What’s this about? You’re going through a period that’s closely linked to your past. Get rid of the skeletons in your closet!

Bitch SESSION SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH, tweet @BitchSessionATL or email bitch@davidatlanta.com *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)

Just because I hit on you one night when I was drunk doesn’t mean I like you. It means I thought you were easy. Just sayin!

Saying you love his “energy “ tells me two things. You’re a whore and loyalty is a concept you don’t get.

I kept trying to step away from you for a reason. Even if you’re at a gay bar, randomly rubbing a stranger’s junk without his consent is creepy. No means no.

Talk about an oxymoron... Atlanta bears are such women. No offense, girls.

Why have friends when you can fuck their boyfriend?

God looks out for the Drunk and the Stupid. You’re covered.

If you can’t afford to buy a drink. Stay home! Drinking is a luxury .

Don’t leave your snot napkins on the bar. That is just nasty !

Being high and telling me you love me only tells me you really don’t!

Wow! What a sorry loser you turned out to be. And to think I thought I loved you. How does anyone get fired from the baths? Go back to the sticks, hustler!

Bitch, you ain’t chicken. You’ve already been plucked and fried.

It’s damn funny that those that point out flaws in others don’t see their own.

When you say someone is pretentious, do you not realize your telling the world you are? Life and any situation is what you make it. Quit judging and just live, Mary!
