In hind sight, I could have picked my moment a little better. This week, David explains all the reasons why coming out for the holidays is a bad idea. disappointment and bitterness they caused the family. It’s way more interesting when someone else is the black sheep, and all the attention is off of you! Blaming work, or your significant other’s family, are really terrible reasons to bow out of Thanksgiving at home. Your parents will know you’re hiding something, and then it becomes a different game called Guilt and Blame...and no one wants to deal with that. So man up, and get creative with your deflections of being focused on. Hell, you could be really brave and offer to host Thanksgiving dinner for once. You know they won’t come, and if they do...you’ll be too busy in the kitchen to worry about anything. Your siblings will then be looked at sideways for not offering to host, so the heat will be off you anyways. It’s a win win!! Whatever your Thanksgiving plans, or whomever the family you surround yourself with mean to you; tell them you love them. They won’t be around forever. But until then; Eat, Drink, and be Mary!!!

It’s Turkey Lurkey Time Why are we hungrily obsessed with all the delicious parts of Thanksgiving? Aside from the great food, what else is there? Spoiler Alert: It’s that fun part where you have to actually visit with the family that cooks and hosts the triumphant meal! So to help all of you hapless homos navigate around the social pleasantries, I’m here to help you with a Thanksgiving Survival Guide. This warm and fuzzy family holiday can be a total nightmare at times, especially if you don’t watch sports; or have a keen interest in Black Friday shopping (which strangely begins on Thanksgiving Day). Even worse, you didn’t actually help cook and you’re not interested in cleaning. So you inevitably become the lazy family member, that all of us scrubbing dishes hate. Your only possible saving grace comes after dinner, when you trick everyone to a family outing at the local Movieplex. You know, that magical place where everyone stares straight ahead in a dark room for two hours without speaking to each other. The pure definition of family nirvana. And believe me, thousands of other unhappy family members will have thought the same thing. It’s historically one of the busiest movie theater days of the year, aside from Christmas Day, for that very reason. If that’s not feasible, another trick to avoid family interactions is to find out who isn’t really welcome at this year’s festivities; and make sure they make an appearance. Let someone else be the focal point of whatever 10 // 11.19.2014

Thanksgiving Traditions

he holidays are upon us. Whether you celebrate with family and/or friends, whoop it up in the club, or find a quiet respite on your own, it’s great to know what’s out there and available to you in this great city of ours.

I asked a few of people what their Thanksgiving traditions were and if they had a favorite dish. Here’s some of their replies. Chi Chi Larue: I always spend it in Fort Lauderdale Florida. This year I will be doing GAYDAYS Lauderdale and then leaving on the Rupaul’s Drag Race Cruise. My fave thanksgiving food was always my moms fruit salad made with Grapes, Canned Mandarin orange slices, Strawberries, pineapple, blueberries and melon. Then you fold it together with home made whipping cream. Yummy!!!!! Leslie Jordan: My family has dwindled to just my twin sisters, my mother and me. We started this tradition years ago of going out to a Thanksgiving Brunch in an old Civil War mansion sitting overlooking the Tennessee River in my hometown of Chattanooga. We started this tradition so my mother, as she gets older, will not have to worry about cooking for days and doing all the dishes. But here’s the kicker: Mother still starts cooking two days before we go OUT to brunch. Why? Well, honey, we HAVE to have leftovers. JC Cassis of XELLE: Thanksgiving dinner is a meal I look forward to all year round. I try not to eat too much, fail, and then fall asleep for hours starting at about 5pm. It’s a holiday that embodies the spirit of American in that sense.

Gay parents Ferd and Brian gave this wonderful Thanksgiving turkey recipe that always wows their family. Overview: Flavor the turkey with a dry rub of salt, pepper and lemon zest; dry out the skin to make it crispy. Result: fantastic! Ingredients 1 turkey, 10 to 12 pounds 6 teaspoons of coarse kosher salt 1 tablespoon black pepper zest of 1 or more lemons 1 or more lemons, quartered 1 bunch fresh thyme or rosemary 1 bunch fresh sage 12 garlic cloves, smashed and peeled 1 (12-ounce) bottle hard apple cider dry white wine 3 onions, peeled and quartered 4 bay leaves olive oil or melted butter, as needed 1. (Remove any giblets from the cavity and reserve for stock.) Pat turkey dry with paper towel; rub turkey all over with the salt, pepper and lemon zest. Transfer to a very large plastic bag. Put herbs and 6 garlic cloves inside bag. Refrigerate for at least 1 day and up to 3 days, turning the bird over a few times. 2. Remove turkey from bag and pat dry with paper towels. Place turkey, uncovered, back on the baking sheet. Return to the refrigerator for at least 4 hours and up to 12 hours to dry out the skin. 3. Allow the turkey to come to room temperature for one hour before roasting it. 4. Heat oven to 450° F. In the bottom of a large roasting pan, add the cider and enough wine to fill the pan to a ¼-inch depth. Add half the onions, the remaining 6 garlic cloves and the bay leaves. Stuff remaining onions and the lemon quarters into the turkey cavity. Brush turkey skin generously with oil or melted butter. 5. Place turkey, breast side up, on a roasting rack set inside the roasting pan. Transfer pan to oven and roast 30 minutes. Cover breast with aluminum foil. Reduce oven temperature to 350° F degrees and continue roasting until a thermometer inserted in the thickest part of a thigh reaches 165° F, about 1½ to 2 hours more. Transfer turkey to a cutting board to rest for 30 minutes before carving.

It Can Be Very Awkward for Extended Family and Other Guests While many people present at holiday time will have an emotional involvement in your coming out, not everyone around will be family. Some guests may be friends or neighbors or just acquaintances who have been invited to share in the joint holiday experience. For these folks, your coming out could turn what was supposed to be a benign and jovial occasion into an awkward situation that they can’t escape from fast enough. Keep in mind, too, that if these aren’t your guests, they’re somebody else’s, and you run the risk of embarrassing that person due to your ill-timed and disrespectful disclosure.

9 Reasons

Why Coming Out on a Holiday Isn’t a Good Idea

H

BY MIKEY ROX

oliday time may seem like an ideal opportunity to come out to your family – everybody’s in one place at one time and there’s less chance for an individual meltdown in a large group setting – but there are many other variables that should be considered. Coming out isn’t just about you, after all. Your friends and family – because they care about you – are emotionally invested in this matter too, and it’s important to keep that in mind when deciding when to come out. For that reason – and nine others – unloading your burden around the holiday table isn’t the best idea you’ll ever have.

1.

The Focus Should Be on Togetherness, Not Divisiveness Even if you think your parents will take the revelation that you’re LGBT in stride and process it responsibly, you can never really be sure how someone else will react. And it’s not just your parents to whom you’re coming out on a holiday; you’ve got a whole house full of people – siblings, aunts and uncles, and grandparents – who will be part of this event. How will they handle it? How will their reaction affect others’? You can’t be sure, which is why, at least for the day that you’re spending in celebration together, you should keep the secret under wraps. The varied reaction to your news could pit family member against family member, and that’s no way to end an otherwise pleasant gathering. 20 // 11.19.2014

3.

You May Not Have Anywhere Else to Go If It Doesn’t Turn Out Well It’s every LGBT person’s worst fear that those who are supposed to love you unconditionally simply do not. Thus, as a result of coming out on a holiday, you could be asked to leave the house – which could put you in a bind if the house in which you’re staying is your only accommodations for this period of time. College students, in particular, should be mindful of this consequence to avoid being shut out in the cold weather typically associated with the Thanksgiving to New Year span.

4.

Your Usually Supportive Social Circle Is Otherwise Engaged You’ll want to talk about what happened when you came out to your family to those who know you best – your friends – but they’ll be celebrating the holidays with their own families and may not be available. This isn’t the end of the world if your coming out went smoothly, but if it didn’t go over so well and you need a shoulder to cry on or a supportive ear that will listen, you could be out of luck. This is a potentially dangerous situation, especially if you start feeling like nobody loves you and you have nowhere else to turn. This is not the truth, of course – although it may feel like it at the time – but it can lead to harmful behaviors that can be avoided at a time when you know someone will be there for you.

5.

It May Be Offensive to Others Celebrating a Holy Day You may not be religious, but others are – and for those people, a religious holiday is a very important and sacred time in their lives. Notwithstanding what most religions already say about homosexuality (you already have a good idea where this discussion is headed before you even start it), it’s just not good form to actively pursue a controversial conversation when the people you love are recognizing a holy day. Be considerate and wait until the day of observation has passed.

respect them as people who just want to stuff their faces with turkey and watch a few football games without a live episode of Dr. Phil taking place in the living room.

8.

It’s Not Fair to Drop a Bomb and Leave Soon After Just like you shouldn’t bring up the subject when you know there isn’t ample time to discuss your sexuality, you shouldn’t come out and leave shortly after. This is a cowardly way of dealing with this issue that will not go away and could become worse if you treat other people poorly during the process. You should be present and There’s Not Enough Time to Have a available and open when you come out, and if you’re in a Serious Discussion hurry – like many of us are on holidays – it isn’t the right When you come out – no matter the outcome moment. – the people in whom you’ve just confided will generally It’s an Already High-Stress want to discuss the matter further. VaHi Setting Lends Cachet to a Familiar Brand

V

aHi is Atlanta’s answer to New York’s SoHo and is arguably the city’s most renowned intersection. A short walk from Piedmont Park, the commercial Virginia Highland village boasts an eclectic mix of art galleries and neighborhood bars. Some of its restaurants are among the best in the city, and Genki Noodles and Sushi (GNS) turns out to be no exception. Their newest location as of 2011, GNS fits right in on North Highland with their high ceilings and brick walls. The sleek and efficient shotgun style layout is lined with ample booths on one side, separated into smaller, more intimate sections by large tropical fish tanks. A full-service bar sits towards the front, with extra high tops sat right up against a large open window with a bar overlooking the bustling sidewalk. This is where diners, like myself, who want to see and be seen squeeze in together to enjoy tropical drinks and owner Reid Zeising’s “Americanized” sushi.

The bar menu would only impress the most novice of drinkers, appealing to a younger, more feminine crowd. Don’t think that I am trying to make myself sound particularly mature or masculine by saying this, however; the cocktail list is lacking in a certain maturity and masculinity. The Yuzu Margarita seemed pretty traditional. The Mr. Miyagi came off as a simple, blueberry Tom Collins. The Tao Tini was my favorite, though almost cloyingly sweet. This peach martini left me longing for something savory. Although there is adequate choice of wines, Zeising himself prefers to pair chilled sake with most of his menu. With a slight chill already in the air, I opted for the hot stuff. GNS boasts a large menu that lists both traditional as well as “fusion” specialties. It can seem overwhelming at first. House favorites are highlighted in yellow, such as the Cheese Kari Kari. A blend of cream cheese and kani kama “crab”. This new spin on the old crab Rangoon is wrapped in flaky pastry and served in a bamboo steamer with wasabi and sweet soy sauces. My server swore by the portabella mushroom appetizer. With such an unimaginative name, I had my doubts. However, I was not 26 // 11.19.2014

disappointed. They grilled and then sliced the substantial mushroom cap as if it was nigiri and laid the slices atop a crispy bed of spinach and red ginger. A “little monster” at heart, I figured I’d try the Poker Face roll (various tunas and tobiko roe). Also a big Jason Schwartzman fan, I decided to try the I Heart Sushi roll (shrimp tempura with avocado and chilies). Photographer Patricia Villafañe and I shared the colorful maki rolls, followed by the Japanese curry bowl topped with katsu-fried chicken. The curry resembled the ubiquitous orange blend found in almost every pantry, but proved warming and, by this point, very filling. With little room left in me, the kitchen graciously prepared a dessert sampler featuring tempura fried Oreos and cheesecake. I felt like I was a kid at a carnival, which is not an easy task considering how mature and masculine I am. With more hits than misses, I am already planning my next dinner at GNS’s VaHi spot. Above all else, this convenient location won me over with its sophisticated, yet casual ambience and honest service. Study the menu online before arriving, and make a game plan. The Hamachi Kama and Nabeyaki Udon are two promising items that I completely missed upon my first visit but will be enjoying very soon.

Avoid the “Holiday 10” How to Still Fit Your Skinny Jeans by New Years

T

BY DR. JAMEELAH GATER

here’s just no fighting the time of year when we all get shameless with our eating. And who really wants to resist all those holiday indulgences? Peppermint lattes, gingerbread martinis, candied apple brandy stuffing?! And let’s not forget the outrageous Turducken - turkey stuffed with duck, then stuffed with chicken. It’s no wonder that by the New Year your waistline is way out of control and the seams and buttons on your favorite pair of skinny jeans are threatening to pop off. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some practical tips to help you sweetly sip and sample while staying away from the piles of (extra) pounds most will gain in their holiday battles. Swap the lattes for café Americano or chai brew tea you’ll save 300 calories and 13 grams of fat. Swap fruit juices for whole fruit. Juicing is “all the rage” but these drinks are high in sugar and low in fiber which may promote hunger and increase body fat. Downsize your plate. Eat off a 9-inch plate to help keep your portions under control. Avoid high carb meals early or late. Start and end your day with balanced meals consisting of protein, carbs and fats. Breakfast suggestionwhole grain oatmeal, fresh fruit and egg whites.

Fast food. With the busy holiday season, fast foods are inevitable. Here are some healthier choices. Skip the soda. Choose single patty burgers and avoid the “special sauce.” Ditch half the bun. For chicken, always choose grilled over fried. Tacos- limit the cheese, avoid double layer shells. Choose meat or beans for the tacos, not both. Engage in healthy competition: get off of the couch for a game of flag football with friends and family. The extra physical activity with help balance those high calorie holiday meals. Go the extra mile. Spend an extra 15 minutes in the gym during the holiday season. On average, 15 extra minutes four times per week can help prevent 1 pound of holiday weight gain. American Smokeout. While that might not be a realistic quit date, this week provides opportunity for you to make a plan to quit. And of course, if you’re not a smoker, offer your encouragement by having conversations with your friends that smoke. In order for anyone to be successful, they have to truly want to quit and find ways to maintain that commitment. Friends can definitely help in that process.

Quit Smoking with the Great American Smokeout

I

By Joseph Brownell

know what you’re thinking, who smokes anymore, right? But the truth is, tobacco use is still the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the United States, and data suggests substantially higher rates of use among the LGBT community. The American Cancer Society estimates that over 30,000 LGBT people die each year of tobacco-related diseases.

Armed with nothing more than a Web-MD slideshow about the almost instantaneous effects of quitting smoking and my own smoker’s history, here are some tips from a former smoker to help guide you through the process. Proceed with caution and as always, consult your doctor before making any significant changes in your lifestyle. Motivation: Figure out why you want to quit and write it down. Place your reason(s) somewhere you’ll see it every day as a reminder. Also make sure you tell someone important in your life that you’re quitting—this helps build a much-needed support system. If at all possible, quit with someone close to you. You can provide support and motivation to each other during those moments of weakness. Plan for Triggers: Stress and anxiety are big triggers for smoking cravings. Figure out your triggers and formulate a plan to combat those. I went through a near text only phase as talking on the phone was one of my favorite times to have a cigarette. If your tobacco use is affected by alcohol intake, maybe plan to curb drinking or at least socialize in smoke-free environments, like Ten Atlanta where you can still satisfy your social quota but avoid smoking temptations.

30,000 LGBT people?! Are you puffing kidding me? A recent study of LGBT smokers in Michigan revealed that most participants start young, before the age of 18, and “. . . nearly every participant reported a desire to quit or have attempted quitting during their smoking history.” As a former smoker – one with 15 months of freedom in my lungs – most smokers I know fall squarely into this category. It also reflects my own carbon monoxide chronicles. I had my first cigarette at 13 – my first cigarette and my first boy kiss. And while both of those were moments in time, when I did start to struggle with my sexuality at 17, I picked smoking back up as a crutch.

Exercise Healthy Habits: Exercise can help take the edge off cravings, but it’s not the only method of coping. Find a hobby or an activity you’ve wanted to try for a while and substitute that for smoking. Work place cravings? Spend the 10-20 minutes a day you would on your smoke break learning a new language. Morning cravings? Try stretching, walking or even signing up for Word of the Day emails from Dictionary.com to learn a new word daily. Snack (Healthy): For many smokers, the hand-to-mouth simulation is a hard obstacle to conquer. Carry candies, nuts or even small bite-sized pieces of fruit to help you in those moments. I initially carried Life Savers with me but switched to a bag of almonds after eating an entire bag in a day.

In a youthful and naïve attempt to exude masculinity, I started smoking Marlboro Reds. My identity brand manipulation didn’t Reward Yourself: You are saving quite a bit of money by stop there as I experienced a menthol phase before realizing that kicking the habit. Find a way to reward yourself when you hit milestones. Celebrating the strides you make will help you mainthe cool kids smoked Parliament Lights. tain your long-term goal of staying smoke-free. On the flip side, It’s this search for identity that tobacco companies prey on, don’t beat yourself up too much if you slip. Examine the situation especially in youth, to entice them to take their first drag. Like and make a plan to avoid or cope with those situations differently those in the study, my smoker’s era was sprinkled with more in the future. well-intentioned (re: failed) attempts to quit than I can actually remember. ARIES (Mar. 20 – Apr. 19): You have a very dynamic week ahead of you. You may feel the need to put all your energy into a group project. You will want to roll up your sleeves and get to work. You’re usually a meditative, pensive person, but now you’re looking for concrete results. This hard work might even help you relax a little.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): You seem to be a specialist at relationships, and you’re very sensitive to the ups and downs in your own. But you may wonder if people love you less. This is rather an odd question, but another may be hiding underneath. Do you really have to make such a big effort in order to be loved? Only you can answer that question.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 20): This week you could put a stop to your activities for a little while. You may take a look at things and realize that the climate of trust you need in order to be productive and creative is missing at the moment. It’s a good time to get some order back into your relationships and remind others of their responsibilities to you.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): Have you ever thought of yourself as a CEO or any other kind of leader? This week is a great week to begin a project involving other people - with you in charge! The strong, assertive side of your personality will come out in your decision making and charisma. Go for it! After all, this is the first day of the rest of your life.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): You’re usually full of energy, but this week you may not feel so vivacious. There’s nothing to worry about. You may have the time to do some thinking about your personal life and what you expect out of your relationships. You might also want to think about how you intend to go about getting it!

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19): What are you after in life? Deep down, does the kind of work you do satisfy your most intimate desires? The little problems you encounter in your professional life over the next week could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Take a look around to see if the work you do take your spiritual nature into account.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): There’s a lot of tension in the air this week. Perhaps you feel like no one is listening to you, and that people are draining your energy. You may act defensively and become very angry. It’s possible that no one has seen in you in such a state before. Don’t be afraid to express your anger. Repressed anger is like poison.

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): You may have had a hard time reaching your objectives. This week will be no different. You may begin to feel dissatisfied with the way your life is going at the moment. You will ask yourself certain questions about your goals. Does your personal life live up to those goals? Can you express your creativity as much as you’d like?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): It’s possible that you’re trying to do too much. If look at the days you spend working, you may realize that too much of your energy goes to some very meager results. Consider taking some time off. Why not go out for a nice dinner with friends or go on a little vacation? Let things happen. You deserve time just for you!

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): You have an innate gift for healing and calming other people in crisis. You should think about doing something with this talent. The positions of the planets may be telling you to think about this in more concrete terms. If you’re interested in herbal therapy, for example, this could be the perfect time to learn more.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): Your sense of responsibility is probably the catalyst for most of your motivation. But what happens when events are beyond your control? You may have to admit that sometimes you can’t control everything. This week you should think about letting things happen occasionally. Your life will be a lot less complicated.

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 19): It’s possible that you could be in conflict with people of the opposite sex today. You may feel as if they put obstacles in front of you. But instead of getting into conflicts, try and ask yourself what they think you’re doing wrong. Does your personality take into account both your masculine and feminine sides?

Just because we hooked up twice doesn’t mean you get to plan our wedding.

Kim Kardashian is an idiot! Sometimes I wonder if my obsession with selfreliance is the reason why I’m single.

What the deal with all these bitter old men in Atlanta? They’re only 24 years old and so jaded.

I love how my middle finger always gets an erection when you’re around.

You’re about as deep as a melted ice cube.

There is a special place in hell for people that play Christmas music before Thanksgiving.

Since light travels faster than sound, you appear bright until you speak.

Twink, you’re not that pretty to be so full of yourself.

I’m tired of your crappy Christmas party. Please don’t invite me this year.

Last night I experienced the déjå screw. Halfway through I realized I’ve been there before.

Grindr cruising is still considered cheating. Yeah, sorry I lost your number. It must have happened when I hit delete, you jackass. I ate so much ass during Gay Pride, I know I’m going to have to get my parasite medication refilled.
