Violet Chachki by Jonathan Bugg
GETTING TO KNOW VIOLET DURING THE COURSE OF A PHOTO SHOOT FOR DAVID ATLANTA BROUGHT NEW INSIGHTS INTO ATLANTA’S NEWEST RUPAUL DRAG SUPERSTAR. SHE’S CALM, POINTED, COLLECTED, AND SUPER TIGHT-LIPPED ABOUT HER EXPERIENCES ON THE SHOW. WHICH LEADS ME TO WONDER HOW FAR SHE’LL GO THIS SEASON.
I
’ve had the pleasure of talking with a good number of RuPaul Alum in the past few years. I’ve even been part of booking RuPaul herself down in Tampa (a very rare opportunity). From Adore Delano and Bianca Del Rio of season six, to Trinity K Bonet, Nicole Paige Brooks, and Phoenix. So let me tell you that when I was in the presence of Violet Chachki, I felt something, that intangible feeling of being in the room with greatness. Violet is statuesque to say the least. Standing well over six feet tall, Violet is built thin and lithe (the way only 22 year olds can). Her skin is clear and fresh, and lightly and smartly tattooed. Then there’s the corset-enhanced figure! I watched as her brand spanking new green spangled corset was tightened over her frame. Garnering that famed 18-inch waist is a process, and not immediately accomplished. There’s some pulling at the strings in the back, then some resting, then more pulling, then more resting. On it goes until finally, the signature hourglass figure is achieved. Both the photographer Russ and I stand there in awe for a silent second. Then we turn to each other and furiously change up our intentions for the photo shoot. The look is a game changer for the evening’s shoot. Violet’s whole look seems natural to her, but very calculated and polished. Her face is seamless in it’s contouring. There’s none of those sharp edges that I might have to Photoshop later. Another show of thought and practice is the skin tone, which matches from head to toe in a luminescent milky white. Usually I see these 20 | 2.25.15
queens that look as if they are obviously wearing tights that are a few shades off. Or have a line at their chins where their base is a shade or two darker. Not the case for Violet. It’s seamless, believable perfection. I’ve done my research; I know that Jason (Violet in boyface) hasn’t been doing drag for that long. In the four years or so of performing as Violet, how is this level of precision is achieved? I asked Violet what her biggest secret to drag is, “I watch a lot of YouTube videos and order a lot off eBay.” It can’t be that simple can it? But now it’s time for the shoot to begin. As the session begins, I’m immediately struck by the artistry and professionalism in front of me. Violet knows her angles. She zeroes in on the camera and starts hitting pose after perfect pose. Again, this can’t be someone who only started doing drag full time a handful of years ago. In 2011, Violet took the stage for the first time at LeBuzz in Marrietta. “A place where drag queens go to be born and to die,” says Violet. Jason was a student at SCAD-Atlanta and I gather that rather quickly the decision was made to leave school and perform as Violet full-time.
Me: Who was one of least favorite ensemble, I look around at what she’s queens? brought with her. A lot of it is very new and very expensive looking. Jet-black fur coat, Her: That’s also a tough one. As We move into the third and final look, a she’s continuing to change into her second dark flimsy sheath dress that reminds me
I’ve asked that Violet come with three looks for the shoot, and it’s time for the second look. Already I think that I’ve got the cover shot in the bag. The second look is a little less corseted, but still very pin-up in style. Violet pulls a delicate lavender lace-front wig out. The detail at the hairline is amazing. I’m asking pointed questions about her experience with RuPaul’s Drag Race and getting nowhere. Violet is not dishing about any of it. Me: Who was your favorite queen from your season? Her: Um that’s a tough one. I made what seems to be a ton of life long friendships. of Mommy Dearest. I finally see Violet without a wig cap on. She has dark shoulder length hair that I wouldn’t have expected. “I’m really trying to focus on aerial work, burlesque work, as well as trying to get my hand in the mainstream fashion world…having the ability to wear my own hair and not a wig is helpful for that.” In 2012, Violet was hired for the inception of The Other Show at Jungle, and is currently the only acrobatic-burlesque drag queen in this town. It’s the end of the shoot and I have just a little time for a few more questions. I ask if she got any sage advice from RuPaul herself. “I don’t remember much” Violet says. “It was kind of a whirlwind. I do remember talking about her days in Atlanta hooking on Peachtree.” After that, hugs and kisses and pats on the back are exchanged between all, and Violet floats up the stairs on to her next gig. I know that we are all going to have to wait to see how this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race pans out, but after an experience like that…my money is on Chachki. Violet definitely has the charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent to go as far as she wants in this world.

RuPaul’s Drag Race:
Season 7 Queens at a Glance by Zak Horn
Miss Fame 29, New York, NY Already well known for work as a make-up artist with a list of celebrity clients, the ditsy, severe queen is already a stand out to go all of the way to the top three. Let’s just hope she’s not another Courtney Act.
I
t’s that time again. When the claws come out in the battle royale competition to become Americas next drag superstar. Fourteen queens from all over, and from all forms of drag to represent.
Who will win? Only time will tell. For me, I can’t wait for all the twists and turns Ru has in store for them. Here’s a quick rundown of the girls.
Katya 31, Boston, MA Look! Willam Belli’s less fishy sister is competing on Drag Race this season! This Russian persona princess has the same “I don’t give a f#@K” attitude and sense of humor that could take her far in the competition. But her not having a beard should earn her some points.
Ginger Minj 29, Orlando, FL This little lady packs a big punch with her “GLAMP” (camp/glam) style who’s wit and reading ability can size up any other queen that gets in her way. Ginger may be able to snatch the crown or make history as the first “bing bag chair” to compete on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Sasha Belle Iowa City, IA Her Meet the Queens look was hilarious! Very Tanya Harding look and that giant brunette 80s hair. This queen seems more chill than some of her other competitors, so let’s hope that doesn’t come off as boring during the show. Maybe she’ll lose it and beat her completion with a lead pipe?
Mrs. Kasha Davis 41, Rochester, NY This queen has plenty of sequins to go with her campy personality. But she is kind of absent throughout the season 7 trailer. Maybe it was just the editing?
Violet Chacki 22, Atlanta, GA A native queen of Atlanta, Violet will give you fierceness, she will give you glam, and she will give you statuesque beauty with legs for days. But the one this this Other Show alum can do, she will give you corset! The tiniest waist in Drag Race herstory.
Kandy Ho 28, Cayey, PR This Latina beauty has made her fishy way to the states to compete this season as the token Puerto Rican contestant. She’s sure to cause some trouble with her fiery personality along the way. This queen exudes sexuality, but let’s see if she can do anything else.
Jaidynn Diore Fierce 25, Nashville, TN This queen has swag for your nerve and can death drop the shit out of you with her sense of humor and personality. Could this plus size diva become the actual first plus size queen to make it to the Top 3? Even if she doesn’t, she’s sure to become a fan favorite.
Trixie Mattel 26, Milwaukie, WI This Midwestern queen brings clown realness and plastic fantastic Barbie esthetic to the competition. Watch out for her severe contour, extravagant costumes, and bitchy one liners. Maybe this seasons Gia Gunn. Well, without the wonky eyelash.
Jasmine Masters 37, Los Angeles, CA This queen is polished with 17 plus years of experience under her sequin dress. I have a feeling she might play a certain Real Housewife of Atlanta if she makes it to the snatch game episode.
Kennedy Davenport 33, Dallas, TX This pageant queen is no stranger to the television screen. She’s appeared on America’s Got Talent and she can perform the house down! We’ll see if the pageant queen and snatch the crown.
Max Malanaphy 22, Minneapolis, MN This queen brings a vintage femme fatale esthetic with a Sharon Needles /Patrick Bateman American Psycho demeanor with a quirky sense of humor. Right now she is #1 on the fan favorite poll and the show hasn’t even begun airing yet!
Tempest DuJour 47, Tucson, AZ This queen has a very Tyra Sanchez voice to go with her Beetlejuice assemble in her Meet the Queens video. She exudes CAMP drag and from her memorable entrance into the work room shown in the trailer, this queen might become the Magnolia Crawford controversial queen of the season. Let’s hope that’s not her only memorable moment. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! 26 | 2.25.15
Pearl 23, Brooklyn, NY Glamour esthetic to the max (no pun intended) with countless out of the box performances, this young Brooklyn native will have no problem using her sharpened acrylic claws to scratch the eyes out of her competition to get the crown. One queen to definitely keep an eye on this season.

What would you like to see in the future for your charities? My goal for Joining Hearts is for it to be structured in such a way that we can continue to achieve healthy growth as a brand and as a community. I want to be able to donate $500,000+ a year and I think we are laying the foundation to get there now.
David Hero:
Ultimately, I want to help start a gay community center and mentor program. A place for open, frank discussions on the issues we face as a community and opportunities to seek guidance from others in the LGBT community regarding any thing from coming out to becoming an architect. I feel there is a need for this type of organization.
PRESIDENT OF JOINING HEARTS, WES BERRY HAS BEEN VERY INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY AND MORE SPECIFICALLY THE CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS IN ATLANTA. YOU’VE PROBABLY SEEN HIM AROUND AT JOINING HEARTS EVENTS LOOKING CALM, COLLECTED AND COIFFED.
How can David readers help you achieve those goals? Get involved and get into it! No matter where your interests lie or what you have to offer there is an organization that can benefit from you. It feels good to give back and to care. Give time, give money, give whatever you have or can, it won’t hurt you, I promise:) I think as a community we have the ability to achieve amazing things in the next few years, nothing is holding us back - it is an exciting time to live in for the LGBT community and I encourage us all to support and be kind to each other, we are worth it!
Wes Berry
How long have you lived in Atlanta? Well, I was born downtown at Georgia Baptist (now Atlanta Medical Center I believe) on Boulevard and my mom used to go to Mary Mac’s prior to seeing her doctor so I have been an Atlanta guy since the beginning. What do you do for employment? I am a Project Manager. My education and experience generally relates to design and construction management, but the last few years I have really become interested in business development and online marketing, realizing I could use the same PM skillsets and apply them to any problem or business. 28 | 2.25.15
My websites/companies are: www.soshstaffing.com - www.outbuzz.net - www. brandatl.com What charities are you involved in right now? Currently, I am the President of Joining Hearts, LLC so much of my energy is focused on the development of that organization and I can’t think of a better use of my time and energy, this is a great organization filled with a lot of amazing people with kind hearts. This is the 28th year for this all-volunteer organization and it is my 7th year being involved. I started as a volunteer and then became a Host. I was then the Assistant Director of Events followed by Director of Events. I then took a year off of the board, remaining a Host, to start a business and plan, coming back as President in 2013.

“What makes a career long lasting is you have to work hard. You have to be dedicated. You have to have a craft. And you have to be kind.” DA: Do you have any favorite queens? Coco: I really love Alyssa Edwards because I knew her uncle back years ago in New York City. He had shown me a videotape of his little nephew, who was trying to choreograph his sister and some of the other kids in the neighborhood. And the nephew was just getting more and more furious because they couldn’t follow the routine. I laughed so hard at that video because it reminded me so much of myself when I was a little boy. I laughed so hard that I actually started crying because back when I was young there was no video. I felt like I was hearing myself. So there I was watching RuPaul’s Drag Race one night and I was looking at Alyssa Edwards on TV when the image of that little boy popped into my mind. I thought, ‘That’s so funny that I just thought of that boy, Justin. I wonder whatever happened; I wonder what he’s doing.’ Then all of a sudden they showed Alyssa as a boy on the show, and I said, ‘Oh, my god, that’s Justin. That’s him.’ I got to meet Alyssa recently at an event, and she came right over and was talking about her uncle. What a funny, small world it is. DA: Which do you think are the most talented queens from Drag Race? Coco: Well, I think Bianca Del Rio won for a reason. She’s been working really hard all these years. I think that says something. With TV sometimes you can get famous without having to put a lot of work in. Then you haven’t developed your craft as well as maybe you should if you’re going to be in show business a long time. Bianca had that down, and she actually came into the competition with that confidence. She knows what she does well, and she could only do her best. DA: What does it take to have such a long lasting, successful career like yours? And are we almost overloaded with drag queens? Coco: Oh, no. I don’t think there can ever be too many drag queens. (laughs) I love that RuPaul’s Drag Race exists. I think it has brought drag back into the mainstream. It gives little boys across America who might want to put on girls’ clothes and express themselves the opportunity to not feel so alone. What makes a career long lasting is you have to work hard. You have to be dedicated. You have to have a craft. And you have to be kind. To purchase tickets for Coco’s show, go to www.dragavanza.com or the Lost-N-Found thrift Store. Ticket also includes entry into Totally 80’s Dragavanza on Saturday, Mar. 7 at Jungle Atlanta. Be sure to sign up for Coco’s newsletter on her website: www.cocoperu.com. advice GIG, the vast majority of small time drag queens are plagued by Histrionic Personality Disorder (yeah, it’s a real thing). This psychological malady is characterized, in part, by a pervasive pattern of: needing to the center of attention, inappropriately sexually seductive or provocative behavior, uses physical appearance to draw attention, displays rapidly shifting & shallow emotions, and self-dramatization.
Dear Dom,
Every Single Question... Every Single Answer Dear Dom,
With Steven/Rayne it seems you’ve encountered a true female impersonator; a real entertainer who puts on a costume, not simply drag, and respects the difference between footlights and candlelight. Who knows, you may have caught a rising star that’s not a psycho. Dear Dom, I need rough sex, Sir. I want my butt paddled to a pulp and I’ve got all the gear. Every guy says he’s up for a rough scene. When I get them home, no one seems man enough for the task. Sir, please help me! Submissive Needs A Pounding Let’s face it, well-qualified tops in Atlanta are as scarce as deviled eggs at a church picnic. The dominant-to-submissive ratio here is completely out of whack. This means you might have to actually train your own master-to-be in how to deliver the proper whooping you’re hankering for.
I thrash & snore at night. It seems rattle the bed...and not in a good way. Lately, my boyfriend sleeps on the But, SNAP, here’s the big secret, which nobody wants to couch. I’ve tried just about everything. What can I do? admit: The bottom runs the show. For all the butch & bravado a top might muster, it’s generally the bottom that’s really directing most rough sex scenes. Breaking through Husband Understands Snoring’s Harmful that paradox is not easy. HUSH, for all matters regarding relaxation, I always refer to my yoga master, Kattie Maffeo. As a licensed ayurvedic therapist, When confronted with your impressive array of floggers, she teaches that the human body is enlivened with two types tawses, whips, cats & quirts, almost any timid top will of energy. The masculine energy, or pingala in Sanskrit, flows demure. With some coaching & coaxing, you can instruct along the right side of the body. On the left side is the feminine even the most naive into a natural. Soon enough you’ll have a demanding master that you’ll be proud to proclaim energy, called ida. is commanding your submissive ass. “If you lay on your left side and close the left nostril, and the right nostril is open, that’s more energizing. That’s good after a With all the punishment, you’re going to need a reliable meal or if you’re not feeling very well,” explains Maffeo. “If you safe word to use when things get too rough. My partner is flip over and lay on your right side and the left stays open, that’s a good Georgia boy. When the reddening gets too near to more calming and soothing. That’s better when you’re trying to that sweet little rosebud, he shouts, “Azalea!” sleep.” Dear Dom, I met this amazing dude named Steven and we really hit it off. He’s sexy & easy-going. But, I just found out he is also a drag queen named Rayne DeLaye. I saw a show and it was terrific. He’s never dressed like a woman in bed. Still, I’m freaked out by this alter-ego. Am I being a jerk about this? Guy Into Girl 56 | 2.25.15
