Amazon in the comic origin stories. And that pretty supermodel is no Amazon. (No one thought to call Laverne Cox??) So what are fans to do? Who do we complain to? Why does Hollywood work so hard on creating scripts from existing comic book story lines and then just ignore the drawings that represent the characters? Those pictures are what we see when we read about their adventures, and they’re who I want to see become three-dimensional on screen. Chris Pratt? Who?! What’s a “Guardian of a Galaxy?” Now thanks to his role as Starlord, he’s the “IT” actor to go to, and might possibly be the next Indiana Jones. That’s a long way from Everwood, Mr. Pratt, but good on you! He’s hot, so I don’t care what anyone else thinks. I’d watch him read Wikipedia out loud. Speaking of loud, we have a Fantastic Four re-boot with a black actor portraying the Human Torch; most recently played by the same guy that plays Captain America, go figure! A Ginger playing Sue Storm, who was blonde haired and blued eyes in the Comics. Then weirdly enough, was cast by a Hispanic actress wearing a really bad front lace blonde wig and obvious blue contacts. Why bother? Just let her be! It’s not like Jessica Alba is ugly or anything. As a fan of the genre, I’m just happy these films are being made... even if like you, I don’t agree with all casting choices. They all grow on me, as I’m imagining they grow on most of you; especially if box office receipts and TV ratings are any indication. But who do you think should be cast as your favorite Superhero coming to the big and little screens. Sound off below, and as Casting actors in various films and television roles is an age-old always...Excelsior!! debate with fans. But since we have no control over the casting process, why are we so obsessed with whom Hollywood chooses to play our favorite characters?
Up, Up, and Away... Wayyyy Off!
Take superhero characters, for instance. Once upon a time, Michael Keaton was cast as Batman...and fans rebelled. “Batman doesn’t have a Jew ‘fro,” they said. Then the movie came out, and Michael Keaton was deemed a really good choice after all; George Clooney’s bat nipples... not so much. But come on, just look at the slew of Marvel and DC products. They have truly won the fandom game in Film & Television alone. There are Avengers, and all of their stand-alone movies. Their spin off TV shows, Agents of Shield and Agent Carter. We have everyone that hangs out in the Hall of Justice, coming to a theater near you. To tide you over, we have Arrow and Flash, and baby Batman over in Gotham. You know, the show that single handedly jump started Jada Pinkett Smith’s career all over again. Have you seen her Fish Mooney character? Simply a (newly one-eyed) bad ass! I expect Cosplayers at Dragon Con to do her proud. Jason Momoa as Aquaman? The fans say ok, then riot when his costume is unveiled. He’s “not blonde” or “not wearing an orange shirt with green pants.” Hell no, he’s not! And thank the Gods, because he’s Polynesian and covered in tribal tattoos. I’d prefer him naked, but will take whatever DC has to offer by way of consolation prize. I mean, have you seen Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman?? Yikes! I’m not sure she’s got the bulk to hold up to scrutiny, because she was an 22 | 3.4.15

Your servers are actually the lovely queens in the show. Lips is where you can find established performers like Charlie Brown and Bubba D. Licious, but also where newer performers are perfecting their craft.
Finding great Thai food in Atlanta was virtually impossible until Thai Chili came along 20 years ago. If you’re into boldly flavored food you’re in luck here. Just make sure to order it “Thai spicy.” This venue can also host some pretty largescale parties.
With a concept that combines The Cantina Restaurant serving classic Mexican favorites & house specialties, and the Hacienda Showroom with an amazing collection of artistic creations from Mexico, No Mas is muy bueno for large parties. They even have the Adios Café where you can get a big group together for breakfast.

BANTAM + BIDDY For great Southern fare specializing in local free-range and pastured chicken, you must try Bantam + Biddy. It’s one of those restaurants that has made it their focus to provide no-nonsense cuisine with an attention to gluten-free/vegetarian offerings, seasonal sides, and of course superior rotisserie chicken. EINSTEIN’S
10TH & PIEDMONT
GENKI NOODLES
While many know this restaurant for its lovely patio, it also invites for a datenight, with quiet booths plus a romantic fireplace. Expect innovative cuisine with clever recreations of Southern comfort classics served by a superior & friendly staff.
The restaurant’s modern, open, and airy dining room with over-sized windows looking onto Midtown is a date-night destination. Better yet are their seasonally-inspired dishes portioned for sharing. On Tuesday evenings they offer excellent discounted dinners for two, plus an Absolut special.
Try Einstein’s Irish Créme Brülée made with Irish whiskey and served with espresso cookies as a treat for you and your date as the perfect end of the meal, but hopefully not the end of the night.
Try their delectable braised short rib spring rolls stuffed with caramelized onions, spinach, provolone cheese, roasted red peppers. Then dip them into some of the best spicy chipotle aioli around.
Sushi is an excellent food idea for datenights. It’s beautiful to see, as well as consume. Sushi is known to have aphrodisiacal qualities as well. Salmon and mackerel are believed to help produce sex hormones with their omega-3 fatty acids. Besides all of that, Genki has soft lighting and high-backed booths that just beg a party for only two.

If you’ve got a little group together grab an order of their Mile High Chicken Nachos. They’re made with house made tortilla chips and oven roasted chicken. Topped with spicy queso, guacamole and sour cream. 502-A Amsterdam Ave. NE • amsterdamatlanta.com • 404-892-2227 40 | 3.4.15

DINING GUIDE
COMMUNITY SMITH
JCT. KITCHEN & BAR
Hailing from Fort Lauderdale, Micah Willix has had the opportunity to cook at some of the most prestigious restaurants down south and here in Atlanta. He brings more than 20 years of experience and a unique perspective to his role as executive chef. A contemporary eatery with a neighborhood feel, Community Smith is the ideal place to relax over handcrafted cocktails and sharable plates.
In a part of the country where seasonal vegetables and deviled eggs are practically religion, Pennsylvania-native Executive Chef Brian Horn marries masterful technique with a simple approach to bold, balanced flavor. Regulars love JCT.’s refined comfort food, like fried chicken, house made bacon mac and cheese, and deviled eggs with country ham.

METRO FRESH
THE COCKENTRICE
GOIN’ COASTAL
With a menu that changes daily, owner Mitchell Anderson has been serving up seasonally inspired, super-fresh cuisine since the 2005 opening of Metro Fresh. Reading his daily blog has become a religion for followers of the restaurant who wish to be upto-date on the ever-shifting offerings.
Chef Kevin Ouzts presents a decisive table utilizing the preeminent ingredients for which he’s become known. Focused on pork and beef, the menu devotes a good bit of space to the slices and shavings that make up a charcuterie board.
Touted as a “sustainable seafood joint,” Goin’ features only the highest quality seafood from sources, either fished or farmed that can exist over the long term without compromising species’ survival or the health of the ecosystem.

THE PIG & THE PINT
LA HACIENDA
MAMA’S COCINA LATINA
With an ever-changing menu that focuses on meats and seasonal ingredients, The Pig & The Pint is a great place to enjoy a simple but stellar meal. They have a wonderful beer list, many of which are locally brewed in Georgia.
When you visit La Hacienda, you’re in for a treat. Experience all of their mouthwatering dishes. Their chefs are renowned for their creative combinations of spices and sauces. We can’t wait for it to warm up so we can make use of their rooftop patio.
Located near the intersection of Cheshire Bridge and Piedmont Avenue, Mama’s brings you well price simple Mexican/ American fare at any time of the day or night. It’s a great place to get both your taco fix and your frozen margarita fix.

RU SANS Now under new ownership & management and with an updated menu, Ru Sans is ready to prove itself once again to Midtown. The cuisine has expanded to exceptionally cover not only sushi, but other Asian food staples like Yakitori meat skewers. Plus they have an awesome lunch buffet for a healthy quick meal on weekdays. DINING GUIDE
THE IBERIAN PIG
Jonathan Bugg, Editorial Director
The contemporary but relaxed atmosphere mixed with authentic Thai and Malaysian cuisine makes Top Spice one of my favorite and very frequent eateries in Atlanta. More and more Thai options are opening around the city but none showcase the abundance of aromatic and flavorful spices of Southeast Asia like Top Spice.
Discovering this modern Spanish restaurant while I was there for a birthday party changed my entire perspective on Decatur. Their menu focuses on all my favorite things; traditional cured meats and Spanish cheeses –I love a good tableau. The Iberian Pig honors traditional Spanish flavor combinations, but also is pushing boundaries with modern techniques and culinary creativity. Their bar is also a If you’ve ever eaten here you already know about the Chicken treat with hand-sawed ice cubes for signature cocktails. Coconut Soup. While it isn’t a main entree it is certainly the best thing on the menu. The coconut milk, chicken, galangal, lime juice, I fell in love with burgers all over again when I tried The Iberian and kaffir lime leaves make for a very unique flavor combination. TRADER VICS
BONE GARDEN CANTINA
While attending Dragon Con in 2009, I found this gem of a Polynesian restaurant by chance and made it my home while at the conference each year thereafter. I’ve met a ton of celebrities while dining there; Larry Hagman (JR Ewing/Major Nelson), Ernest Borgnine, and John de Lancie (Q from Star Trek Next Gen) just to name a few. However the island-style cuisine is what brings me back.
If a good friend of mine hadn’t introduced Bone Garden to me I may have never discovered it. Tucked away in an industrial area in West Midtown, Bone Garden Cantina is worth the search. The decor is funky and fun with a Day of the Dead motif. The kitchen prepares small batches of authentic Mexican dishes a la carté making it easy to build a meal of your favorites. Tequila aficionados will be in heaven as the bar touts 50 premium brands.

Ten Traits of a Great Dinner Date
by Jeffery Silvey
U2 TOLD US THAT ALL WE NEED IS LOVE, BUT LOVE IS SO HARD TO FIND. LOVE COMES FROM A RELATIONSHIP AND A RELATIONSHIP GROWS FROM A GOOD DINNER DATE. BUT DATING IS JUST LIKE U2’S NEW ALBUM THAT’S ON EVERY APPLE USER’S IPHONE; NO ONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT.
D 1
ating has become a lost art form. It seems the only connection we can make on a date is with the restaurant’s wifi, and even that isn’t strong. Here are some tips to help you through the dating maze and get you closer to a Prince Charming. Go into each date with an open mind because good dinner date tips aren’t just for waiters anymore.
2 3
GO EASY ON THE COLOGNE. Now I’m guilty of not following this one. I personally believe I’m naked unless I’m covered in five good sprays of Burberry London, but if it’s a dinner date then what I really want to smell is the dinner. Love should be the only smell in the air, and for me love smells like shrimp alfredo with penne pasta, not Calvin Klein One.
DON’T DITCH. A guy ditched me once when we were on a date at a bar. He took a “work related call” and disappeared to the bathroom. After wondering if he had explosive diarrhea for fifteen minutes, I realized that I had been ditched! If you commit to a dinner date, then commit to the full date. If you feel like the date isn’t working then do the polite thing and make up an excuse and spare your date’s ego. They’re already going to go home alone at this point; there is no need to make them go home in tears.
4
DON’T BRAG. Bragging is just like burping, it’s a natural LEAVE YOUR EXES OUT OF IT. There are endless topic bodily function that everyone does and it does not bechoices for a dinner date, but ex-boyfriends should is long at a dinner table. I had a guy tell me one time that not one. If you turn the date into a therapy session and his grandfather owned an airline, he worked with the explain why it didn’t work out with Dylan seven months Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and that he worked ago then I’ll forget about the meal and want to hear for Michael Kors. In reality he just worked at Dillard’s selling Dylan’s side of the story. There are much more important purses. I’m not that hard to impress, just showing up on time things to talk about, like should we get spinach artichoke will get you all the bragging rights you’ll ever need. cheese dip or hummus as an appetizer, or both. 58 | 3.4.15
davidatlanta.com | 59
5
DRINK RESPONSIBLY. I know after three margaritas I’m pretty much gone for the night. I try to hold my liquor but sometimes I slip, that’s when I need someone to hold me and help me get home. If you get too drunk then I have to worry about how we’re both going to get home, and that can be a real buzz kill. I have the upper body strength of a butterfly, I will not be able to support you.
6
CHOOSE A GOOD RESTAURANT. In general I’m not a picky eater, unless we’re talking about mixed vegetables. I don’t care where we eat, just as long as I can eat. That being said, there is no excuse for picking a terrible restaurant. If the date takes place at a Waffle House then you can be rest assured that your hashbrowns will be the only thing that go all the way that night.
7
DON’T SNORT COKE IN THE BATHROOM. I know, this sounds absolutely crazy, right? I have a friend whose date left him during the meal to go do a line of blow in the bathroom. I don’t mind if you enjoy the occasional recreational drug every now and then, but coke is a little extreme for a first date. Stick to the Xanax and muscle relaxers until we’re better acquainted.
8
PLAY HARD TO GET. Sex is good on a first date. Actually sex is good whenever you can have it, but on a date though play a little hard to get. Once I sit down at the table I know if I want to take the guy to bed, but I don’t want him to think I put out for the value of a spaghetti dinner (even if I have put out for less). Add a little mystery to the pursuit, but be sure to leave a good amount of clues.
9 10
USE YOUR TABLE MANNERS. There’s nothing worse than sitting across from a hot guy on a first date who is attacking his food like a gorilla on a binge. I know I always present my best table manners on dates. If you can’t manage that, at least chew your cud with your freaking mouth closed. MOST IMPORTANTLY, DON’T BE SCARED TO SCREW IT ALL UP. There is no other way around it: dating sucks. I have had terrible luck on dates and have met countless number of terrible guys, but that’s what dating is for. You go through bad date after bad date. That’s what helps you realize when you have a good guy. And once you get a good guy you can both drunkenly do lines of coke in the Waffle House bathroom while you talk about your exes after shopping the sale at Dillard’s and you won’t even feel bad about any of it.

advice
Dear Dom,
Every Single Question... Every Single Answer Dear Dom, I found a weird bump between by balls and butthole. It’s itchy as hell and popped up after I prepped for a date last week. The thing is “too far south” to see and I’m too embarrassed to talk with my doctor. Do you think this is serious? Taint Has A New Growth You’ve got a thing, THANG, behind where your thing hangs, huh? Manscaping for that date has probably caused an ingrown hair now infected. A magnifying mirror & a pair of tweezers ought to solve the problem. Or, a very, very close friend with a steady hand. The next time you need naked ‘nads it’s essential to use a perfectly-fresh, multi-blade razor and do not forget to apply plenty non-astringent moisturizer. Ingrowns aside, there are some other uglier nasties that might be lurking down below: genital herpes or genital warts. Both conditions are caused by viruses and beyond the scope of selfhelp. See a physician. Dear Dom, My new job requires attending lots of banquets and business lunches. That’s the good news. The bad news is my employer usually goes along too. He’s a jerk. The man is rich, rude, and loud. He treats servers like servants. Worse yet, he’s a lousy tipper. It’s embarrassing to accompany the creep to all these work-related functions. He makes me cringe. Can I confront him? Brash Obnoxious Smug Superior 80 | 3.4.15
Your employer sounds like a bitch, BOSS. Long ago, William Shakespeare wrote, “The better part of valour is discretion; in which the better part I have saved my life.” That famous line from the play Henry IV was delivered by Falstaff pretending to be dead on a battlefield so he isn’t discovered by Prince Hal. The Bard is basically saying that caution is better than rash courage. You need to be just like Falstaff to save your job. Lay low. Personal confrontations with managers are almost always explosive. When alcohol is added to the mix at those outof-office events, you’ve got a bomb that’s begging to be sparked. Plus, experienced waiters & bartenders know exactly how to defuse domineering douchebags without getting burned. There’s no need for you to play with fire and risk your career. Can you call out the boss for being boorish? Sure. Should you? Hell, no!

ARIES (Mar. 20 – Apr. 19): Career and financial successes might finally come your way after months and perhaps years of striving. The emotional support you receive from those who’ve been working with you can be very gratifying, and it’s likely to last for a long time.
LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): Has a new housemate recently moved in, Libra? If so, you can expect this person to live with you for a while. This is good, because he or she is likely to be very loving, supportive. Go with it.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): A complex creative project could require some indepth research this week, and you could spend much of the day online or in the library. This is probably a subject you love, so you won’t mind the time you put in.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): A love letter or perhaps a poem or other artistic work dedicated to you could make your week. A warm feeling of being cherished and adored could stay with you throughout the week as a result.
GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): Financial growth adds to a growing sense of selfworth, especially since your current situation should continue. You may have a vivid, emotional dream. Perhaps it involves a long-term love interest.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 20): A love relationship that’s been around for a long time could be enhanced today by an increased level of sensuality. Intense emotion could pervade your being, making it difficult to concentrate on much else.
CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): Romance blossoms for you this week, and commitment or marriage may be just over the horizon. You and your beloved may have recently reached a new understanding that has bonded you more tightly. Make the most of it.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19): Artistic activities or those involving healing are enhanced this week. Whatever you try is going to be more a part of your very being than it would be at other times. Make the most of this energy now and your skills should continue to grow.
LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): Service to others might take up a large part of your week, perhaps on an artistic level or maybe in the form of sharing psychic or healing energy. Don’t think your efforts are unappreciated.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): Love takes on an idealized and fairytale aura, as you and a current or potential partner spend time alone, talking or just enjoying being together. The warmth, affection, and high regard you have for each other are apparent to everyone.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): The words for the week are “romance” and “creativity.” Romance is enhanced by passion generated by a gratifying love relationship that will probably last for a long time. Don’t exhaust yourself. Know when to stop.
PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 19): A meditation circle or other group activity devoted to spiritual pursuits could be on your agenda. It’s important that you attend, as you need a little peace and quiet, as well as the support from others in the group.

Hey! Quit hogging all the ugly!
I never knew my boyfriend was an alcoholic until he came home sober one night.

Actually, your judgmental ageism is far more pathetic than any trendy 50-year old. It’s all about confidence. Guys like you are a dime a dozen: typical city fag that thinks he can treat people anyway he likes. Seems you ran into someone a little smarter this time. Oopsies!
If I put my dick in your mouth, will that shut you up?
Dating you makes me want to be a better person. So I can date better people.
I’m not a tease; I’m just here to remind you of what you can’t have.
If you’re over 50 and still using club drugs you’ll never remember your 60’s. Jokes on you, Mary!
I’m not mean... you’re just a sissy.
The only thing that’s pathetic is YOUR grammar.

Yes, I got that kid back here and was going to sleep with him. But when I took his pants down he smelled like shit.
All I heard was “Blah blah blah, I’m an asshole.” It’s funny you go for the innocent 20-somethings so you can drug them and take advantage of them. What’s gonna happen when they figure it out?
