MAAPIVERSARY

ATLANTA BALLET: CARMINO REAL

PENTATONIX

Join in a classic Third Thursday Networking group as they celebrate MAAP’s second year of bringing gay business professionals together. There will be light bites and a cash bar to help loosen you up for a few hours of open networking. Reminder: Kat’s Café is just below Helmet Salon, and there will be valet parking available.

Inspired by the 1953 Tennessee Williams play of the same name, the story is told from the perspective of Kilroy, a character based on patriotic iconography from the WWII era. They have commissioned a brand new score for this ballet, performed live by the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra.

A Capella has seen a massive resurgence of interest over the past couple of years, due in large part to movies like Pitch Perfect. At the forefront of this revival is Pentatonix, a five-piece who put their own meticulously in-tune spin on everything from Katy Perry to Marvin Gaye, with a Daft Punk mash-up/medley quickly becoming their signature number.

The Atlanta Freedom band will use its talents and music to honor local people and organizations doing heroic work to make our community a better place. The heroic music combined with the inspiring stories of the honorees will provide a powerful experience for the audience.

A wonderfully perverse, new cult classic for our modern times. A dark, comedic theatrical drama about The Pascals, for whom the clock stopped with the Kennedy assassination, shut in as a Thanksgiving hurricane swirls outside. Directed by Atlanta’s very own Topher Payne.

Help Ben Hadsock Many in Atlanta know Ben Hadsock and his devotion to the LGBT Community. Ben is an individual giving manager for Jerusalem House, a non-profit organization that provides housing and other services for people living with HIV. Ben has also worked extensively with AID Atlanta and Joining Hearts. There is power in the Atlanta LGBT Community and the power comes from individuals like Ben and like many of you, people that give back. Ben Hadsock suffered a massive stroke on March 5th and is currently in ICU. Ben had surgery to remove part of his skull to relieve brain swelling and will have a long road of rehabilitation ahead. Whether you know Ben personally, it is very likely your life has been touched by his work in our community. Many of us struggle as children, growing up ‘different’, growing up gay. We may not always realize it but the LGBT community in Atlanta is very strong, we take care of each other. We have seen it first hand over the past few years, as various members of our community needed support... we took care of them and we will take care of Ben Hadsock. Even with insurance, the out of pocket medical and rehabilitation costs will be catastrophic. Any contribution amount will be appreciated. Every dollar will matter in the quality of life for Ben. Well, I’ll tell you what went wrong. The CAKE!! The cake was a total fucking nightmare. I’ve never seen anything so hideous in my entire life. The first obstacle to the cake-of-doom encounter, was working with a Wedding Planner that lived 2,000 miles away in Victoria BC. The second issue was my language barrier with the Pastry Chef of the gorgeous Fairmont Empress. He was from a French-speaking Caribbean Island, and I couldn’t communicate well over the phone. So, I thought emails and pictures through my planner would suffice, and all would be well. However, three pictures showcasing the style, shape, and coloring of our perfect wedding cake...only added more confusion. The end result was a wedding cake like no other. It looked like a cake made for a proud parents’ baby shower. All in shades of powder blues and silver; not the planned dark golds, and hunter greens, and wine reds, and moonlight blue Carnivale colors of Fall. When it entered my field of view at the Reception, I was mortified. What the fuck was this ugly ass cake doing in my perfectly themed wedding extravaganza??? Well, no sooner did my eyes connect to my brain, then my lovely wedding planner entered my field of vision and asked how my very FREE wedding cake looked? Bless her heart; she apparently had dealt with enough Gays on a Rampage to know that Tokyo was about to set loose Gayzilla. Needless to say, it was very tasty...that gloriously free wedding cake. It was buttercream frosted (under that hideous fondant) over a vanilla lemon cake, layered with raspberry preserves. So even though it was about as attractive as a tent boy in Cypress, it was the best cake we’ve ever eaten.

Love, Stress, and Marriage! Why are we so obsessed with getting married? Is it the romantic moments suggested to us by parents, while growing up? Or is it more like some check-the-box achievement badge for adulthood? Whichever the case, just know that no wedding is perfect. I don’t care who you are, or how much money you have, no amount of stressful worrying or planning will change that fact. Mine and Andrew’s wedding was planned within an inch of its life, and was to be nothing short of the “Perfect Wedding” for the two of us. Ever since I was a wee fag, I had dreamed about my wedding day. We had some money saved to do it right. And with my attention to detail, and my obsession to make the impossible...fanfuckingtastic, I just knew it would be a snap.

Andrew and I have been together almost 20 years, and we still laugh and talk about that ugly fucking cake. Your wedding won’t be perfect, but it’ll definitely be memorable...because you’ll be there!!

Um, no...no it wasn’t. Do you have any idea how many kinds of invitation paper there are?? And that you have to order samples to feel and see the true textures and colors, because the Internet lies to you??!! That was when reality starting seeping in, planning a wedding was going to be really HARD!! I had a graphic designer create the most gorgeous wedding invitation on iridescent velvet purple card stock in dark gold lettering, served in a blood red enamel-lined cream envelope. We had custom-made Venetian Carnivale masks made for all the Guests, to match their formal wear, with our wedding date and signature inside of them; to take as their favor for attending. It was a late fall sunset wedding on the verandah of the Fairmont Empress, overlooking the harbor of Vancouver Island. What could possibly go wrong??? 22 | 3.18.15

SB: It was more of a disadvantage for me. I’m a crazy super-fan, and have watched every episode many times. I knew that people that faded into the background don’t win. So on the Glamazon challenge I decided to be this nerd girl, who whips off her glasses and undoes her hair to become a sexy chick. A She’s All That transformation. It just looked stupid. That’s what was frustrating. There was no way I could have won that challenge with only three lines. I had to try something. DA: How would describe Sasha’s style of drag to be? SB: I like to be a chameleon. I dance, I do camp drag. I’ve done pageants, so I can do glamour. I like to do everything. It’s hard to put a label on me. I think they kind of like the girls who are one specific character, but I just can’t put myself into a box like that. I would get bored. I like all the genres of drag too much. DA: How did that evolve? SB: I mean when I started my name was Frisbee Jenkins and I only did camp drag. Only comedy. Then someone convinced me to do a pageant, put me in a gown and painted me, and I realized that I could be cute. So then I started working on my paint-game, now I just like to do it all.

DA: What’s next for Sasha? SB: I was better? No, I think that I was more myself. The first few times I was trying to be someone who I wasn’t. I was acting very Laganja Estranja…saying things like ‘Mama!’ and ‘Gurl!’ and all that stuff. I think they saw right through me. I was trying to give them what I thought a drag queen acted like. The last time I was just myself…and more relaxed.

SB: I going to ride this wave and get some bookings. I’ve been really trying to build up my YouTube channel with this exposure. DAVID TUTERA Guru On Planning That Special Day by Gregg Wynn

F

or 30 years, David Tutera has brought his boundless imagination, creativity, and resourcefulness to the event planning industry. Starting at age 19 with just one customer, he has since assembled a roster of clients that would make a red-carpet reporter blush: Elton John, Barbara Walters, Jennifer Lopez, Vice President Al Gorem, Tommy Hilfiger, The Rolling Stones, and scores of others.

28 | 3.18.15

David Atlanta: Ideally, how long before the ceremony should a couple start planning? David Tutera: A good time frame for a couple to plan their wedding is about a year, but more and more couples are choosing longer engagements and stretching out this process to be a year and a half to two years. A year or more will give you plenty of time to research and book the perfect vendors, order the wedding attire of your dreams, and relax a little during the planning stages rather than trying to cram everything in. But, of course, weddings can certainly be planned in shorter time frames. And speaking of planning—I’m teaming up with some of the top vendors in the Atlanta area on June 14, 2015 at the Georgia World Congress Center to host the first stop of my newest project, Your Wedding Experience presented by David Tutera—a one-of-a kind event tailored to couples, offering endless wedding inspiration, reputable vendors and the best possible resources all under one roof. including a request for a “swamp” themed wedding or a monster truck filled ceremony. But I try to tell all of my clients that a wedding isn’t a birthday party and it doesn’t have to have a literal theme, you just need to find a wedding style that fits you and your personality as a couple. DA: What demands do celebrities make that are different than those of us average folks? DT: At the end of the day, everyone just wants a dream wedding, celebrity or not. Most of the celebrities that I’ve worked with don’t have any completely outrageous requests, although I have had a few ask for things like performances from their favorite band or private jets to transport all of their guests! DA: Black tuxedos can be so ho-hum; what are the latest trends in men’s formal wear? DT: We’re seeing more and more color and personality in men’s fashion, especially when it comes to wedding attire. Many grooms are opting for a suit, instead of a tux, which allows them to bring in their own style through colored shirts, patterns and fun accessories, and it’s a great pairing for today’s lessformal events. If you’re planning a more traditional event, a navy tuxedo is a fun and modern twist on the old classic. DA: What special Georgia influences would you bring to a celebration held here? There are so many historical venues in Georgia, and I knew that would provide the perfect backdrop for this event rather than the more modern venues I find in other cities. Instead of doing a literal “Georgia peach” theme, we brought in soft colors through the flowers and other decor to really pump up the Southern Charm.

Madonna Bares Her Rebel Heart by Jeffery Silvey

T

hey say the number 13 is unlucky, and at first glance it would seem that Madonna knows first hand considering everything she has been through with her thirteenth studio album. She was forced to rush release part of the album following a series of hacks and leaks. Then she was yanked onto her back on stage live at the Brit Awards. After being down for a few seconds (and hitting the back of her head) she stood back up and finished her song victoriously, proving that you can’t keep the Queen down.

Rebel Heart, the singer’s new album, may have started out unlucky, but Madonna has managed to make the most of the situation. The energetic post-breakup anthem “Living For Love” opens the 19-track set and manages to keep the momentum going. She shows how much stronger her vocals are on the ballad “Ghosttown” and nods to her acoustic days of 2000’s Music on “Devil Pray.” Ever the perfectionist and serious businesswoman, she lets down her guard and shows off her playful side on songs like “Bitch I’m Madonna” and “Body Shop.”

“Holy Water,” “Best Night,” and of course “S.E.X.” The woman who literally wrote the book on sex, shows off her dominatrix side through dark beats, but she also shines a light through soaring songs like “Hold Tight” and “Iconic.” She indulges her ego on “Vini Vidi Vici,” but she flawlessly counters that song with the vulnerable, and brilliant, “Joan of Arc.” With this album she allows her past to influence the present, but she takes it all in stride as she uses it to keep moving forward. The Queen lets down her armor with this new set, but she still remains brandishing her sword, ready to slay. Overall, the thing that critics hold against her is the very thing that makes this a great album; her age. When it comes to listening to advice on getting over heartbreak, on making it to the top and being successful, on sexual pleasures, and assuring me that I can do anything I want to, I want that advice to come from a living legend who has forged her place in history and still has something to say at the age of 56. It doesn’t matter what age you are, just as long as you live for love.

Must hear songs: Hold Tight, Joan of She goes back to her provocative nature Arc, Inside Out, Living For Love. on sex inspired and sex infused tracks like 32 | 3.18.15

Same-Sex Nuptials

with All New Traditions by Jonathan Bugg

WHY SHOULD WE ATTEMPT TO MIMIC THOSE TIRED OLD, STRAIGHT WEDDING TRADITIONS? WHY IN THE WORLD SHOULDN’T WE BEGIN NEW TRADITIONS FOR A NEW DAY OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY?

A

s the inevitably of same-sex marriage finally comes to the peach state, looking towards the future of gay marriage has come to the forefront. Most of us have been to a bunch of straight weddings and now that you’re planning your own gay wedding, it seems obvious to look to those straight weddings for inspiration. After all, it’s what we grew up knowing. I’ve been talking to a bunch of couples lately who are struggling with what traditions to keep and what to kick when planning their own wedding. One tradition that I heard of was the double aisle ceremony. Each person’s attendants alternatively go down the respective aisle. Then the brides/ grooms each walk down their aisles 36 | 3.18.15

simultaneously. If you think about it, it makes great sense. In a gay or lesbian wedding, there is not necessarily a “bride” who is expected to be the center of attention. Many gay and lesbian couples who are marrying have been together already for years and want to walk separately and meet in the middle. There is one recommendation that was uncovered by this unconventional ceremony style: it is highly recommended that you have your photographer get an assistant to make sure you capture both parties on their special day. Having your wedding photographed is paramount. If done well, it will not interfere with your enjoyment of the day. And leave you with timeless visual memories for all time.

basically doubles as the guest book and allows the couple to have something that truly represents them. Plus, it’ll look great on the wall for years to come. There are tons of straight traditions associated with weddings and receptions: photos during cocktail hour, breaks between the ceremony and reception to let the couple bond, wedding party introduction, father-daughter dance, mother-son dance, line dancing, garter toss, bouquet toss, cake cutting, and on and on it goes. Why should we conform? We can ditch a lot of that stuff.

Why should the wedding party miss the cocktail hour to take photographs, shouldn’t they be able to enjoy a glass of celebratory bubbly with their guests? Some weddings even offer something When I was at my brother’s traditional stronger at the cocktail hour, but beJewish wedding, one thing that I loved ware that drunken guests are harder to was the ketubah. New Same-Sex Wedding Vows AN EXCERPT FROM THE JUDGE VAUGHN WALKER RULING WHICH WAS THE FIRST JUDGE TO OVERTURN PROPOSITION 8:

anymore)? Or maybe deleting their Grindr accounts simultaneously? Just choose something that works for you as a couple. Now let’s talk about the cake. White cake with white frosting is traditional but many people just do not like the combination. Think about having multiple cakes and different flavors. Many same-sex couples use rainbows to have gay cake look. Why not a rainbow of cakes? It will be a crowd pleaser. The nice about this day and age, is that gay cake toppers are widely available online. Some can even be customized to look like you! Maybe you’re one of those couples that is less interested in the ceremony that the reception. Why not really go all out and hold your reception at a nightclub? Puteet and Steven held their reception at Jungle and decorated the whole place to their specific theme: Bollywood meets Birdcage! The theme was determined by the backgrounds of the grooms. Included in this extravagant reception was a giant Ganesha 38 | 3.18.15

(Indian elephant-headed deity). After the reception, guests were treated to a very special drag show, themed by Ruby Redd. The first dance can be one of the most romantic moments of the day and a real tearjerker for the guests. It can also be a really nerve racking experience for those taking part! Remember – it is your choice if you choose to do a first dance – don’t be forced in to it but make sure you inform your DJ or band and your best man/best woman to ensure nobody puts pressure on you on the big day.

The right to marry has been historically and remains the right to choose a spouse and, with mutual consent, join together and form a household. Race and gender restrictions shaped marriage during eras of race and gender inequality, but such restrictions were never part of the historical core of the institution of marriage. Today, gender is not relevant to the state in determining spouses’ obligations to each other and to their dependents. Relative gender composition aside, same-sex couples are situated identically to opposite-sex couples in terms of their ability to perform the rights and obligations of marriage under California law. Gender no longer forms an essential part of marriage; marriage under law is a union of equals… They seek the mutual obligation and honor that attend marriage… seek recognition from the state that their union is ‘a coming together for better or for worse, hopefully enduring, and intimate to the degree of being sacred.”

10 Important Gay Films You May Not Have Seen by Zak Horn

F

ilms can provoke emotion and nostalgia on all audiences who flock to the screen to escape their real lives for a few hours. However, many notable and important gay films have yet to be seen by most of the public and even gay audiences today. Important films that have helped shape or show the lifestyle of generations past have been kept in the dark. These few films are important works in gay cinema that many may have not seen, but should:

10. SOLDIER’S GIRL (2003) Based on a true story, Soldier’s Girl follows a chance meeting between a soldier and a transgender woman during a bar visit away from his army base. The film tackles with acceptance of what it means to actually be a Trans woman and the obstacles that can arise in the wake of falling in love. The film is powerful and even more tragic because it is based on real life events.

9. EDGE OF SEVENTEEN (1998) This gay coming of age story is set in the Midwest during the mid-80s and tells the story of a high school senior as he tries to deal with accepting his sexuality. The realistic storyline and dialogue authenticates the films topics on family, identity, and sexuality.

8. THE BOYS IN THE BAND (1970) Based on Mart Crowley’s play with the same name, The Boys in the Band is set in New York in the beginnings of the gay liberation and follows eight friends. The film dives into the affects and abuse of alcoholism and the cattiness and jealousy between friends. The film’s stingingly truthful script holds up well with many of the hysterical moments throughout. 44 | 3.18.15

7. BEAUTIFUL THING (1996) This British film follows two neighboring teenage boys as they discover they have feelings for one another in a suburb of 3. WEEKEND (2011) London. The films depiction of what it is to have a first love is extremely realistic with a positive portrayal of gay love. This film revolves around two UK men who meet in a bar and do the unthinkable: They contemplate a relationship after a hookup. The film is directed/written by Andrew Haigh (producer of 6. TORCH SONG TRILOGY (1988) HBO’s Looking) and explores the complications of a modern gay relationship and expectations. The beautiful cinematography Based on three plays by Harvey Fierstein, the film follows and honest dialogue help make Weekend and exceptional film Arnold through three very important relationships in the for the gay community. course of his life. The film tackles the complexities of love, tragedy, and gives a very in-depth look on the outside world’s view of what family can be.

2. PARIS IS BURNING (1990) This documentary was filmed in the mid-1980s and gave audiences a glimpse of the New York Ballroom Scene. The film 5. THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT (1994) explores race, being transgender, social status, and teenage runaways and examined the fantasy and desire of having fame Priscilla is an Australian film with three heterosexual and very and a more luxurious lifestyle than what life dealt them as they well-known actors playing two drag queens and a transgender just try to survive on a daily basis. Most lingo heard in RuPaul’s woman as they travel across the Australian Outback. The film Drag Race and in gay culture originated from this film. has become one of the most well-known gay cult classics and was highly praised upon the theatrical release.

1. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (2005)

4. THE CELLULOID CLOSET (1995) This documentary narrated by Lily Tomlin explores the history of gay cinema and characters from the beginning of motion pictures. The film gives an in-depth look of the “gay” topic in these films and how the characters and film history has been altered from this to more modern days. Filled with celebrity, film theorist and critic interviews, The Celluloid Closet timelines the importance of queer cinema. 46 | 3.18.15

This multi award winning and highly praised film focuses on a 20 yearlong love affair between two married men who bond while herding sheep along Brokeback Mountain. The powerful story begins in the 1960s and ends in the 1980s and explores homophobia during this time and what it means to give up everything to not have their sexuality exposed. With many amazing performances from the actors, Brokeback Mountain was definitely a movie before it’s time that catapulted gay driven storylines into the Hollywood mainstream.

advice

Dear Dom, I’ve been seeing this guy. When we finally got to the bedroom, I found he has a distinct third nipple. I’m having a hard time looking at that gross thing. What can I do? Two Is Totally Sufficient Triple nipples are quite common, TITS. Often mistaken as just a skin mole, supernumerary nipples are found in about six percent of males. As a minor congenital defect, they are an evolutionary remnant from our mammalian ancestors. Usually just one will be found. Yet, some guys have as many as eight. You are being shallow, TITS. Beauty is far more than skin deep. Go get your boy’s itty-bitty bosom pierced, attach a tiny leash, and take him out on the town. Shirtless, triple nipple man’s bound to be a big hit at the fetish bar. Dear Dom,

Dear Dom,

Every Single Question... Every Single Answer Dear Dom, My boyfriend likes it rough in the bedroom. So do I. However, his idea of rough involves using less lube than I prefer. He likes the traction. How do I tell him that if he’s going to continue to enjoy this rosebud he’ll need a little more grease? Squirt Lube On, Top-man

After years of contemplation, I’ve decided to transition into a woman. I’m very worried about how to tell my friends and family. Is there a way to ease the blow? What Would Jenner Do? Tabloid magazine coverage may be the method to reveal your transition, WWJD, if you’re a former Olympic champion with a couple of gold medals and cable-TV reality show. For us mere mortals, a bit more discretion is the way to go. Just getting a new hairdo can be tough enough for most people. The complete reforging of somebody’s gender-identity is a true challenge. The embrace of loved ones will be vital. Candor is key. Helpful online transgender resources abound. And those websites are fine & dandy. But, they can take you only so far. Before the big family reveal, you should build a solid, face-to-face support network. In Atlanta, you’re a lucky gal. Thanks to the city’s large LGBT population, you’ll find many local transgender options. Atlanta Gender Explorations is very good place to start. Held on the second Saturdays of each month at 6 p.m., their meeting locations are kept confidential. To find out more, contact them at 404-583-6423 or abfab3k@gmail.com.

Manufactured of super-stretch silicon and thermoplastic rubber, the Raw Dawg is a combination butt-plug & cock-sheath. It can be lubed for you and bone-dry for him. Hollow and ribbed for his pleasure, with a hole-hugging flanged exterior, the devious device will protect that precious rosebud while Old McDonald plows the farm. 72 | 3.18.15
