favorite activities at the show, and I may or may not have been seen playing in strip poker tournaments, over the years. FroliCon is a show owned and directed by three amazing women, of whom I’ve great admiration for being pioneers of such taboo interests. The convention has gay, trans, bi, poly, Dom, sub, and plain ole vanilla offerings; for everyone looking to know a bit more about what makes themselves happy in the bedroom...and more importantly, how to please their partners. Their annual charity party is always one of the most sensual and hedonistic affairs. There once was a turn-of-the-century Victorian themed party, where the many styles and ways of enjoying the forbidden liquor known as absinthe, became the star of the evening. But not to be outdone by absinthe alone, the offerings of fresh succulent foods were served on fully nude models. With only your hands and mouth as utensils, things got really really interesting. Like, “I just ate kiwi off snatch” kind of interesting. And that’s the kind of charity event I will always get behind! You only live once, right??!!

With amazing burlesque shows, talent and costume contests, and a massive dungeon designed for all matter of play (the male only portion is quite fucking hot); you would be remiss to skip out on yet another amazing convention like FroliCon, that this fine city has to offer us mere sexual deviants. With the arrival of spring, we become obsessed with getting out of the house. The weather starts giving us hope that the cold will finally go away, and we can start enjoying outdoor sports again. With all the picnics, the shirtless action promised on the Belt Line, those adorable doggie parks, and yummy margaritas on the patios...Midtown finally comes alive! And it can never be soon enough. Well, sort of. Not to be short-changed just yet, there’s a place in Atlanta that still hosts some indoor sports...of a different kind, over Easter weekend (April 2nd thru 5th) each year. FroliCon is a fetish convention hosted at the Sheraton Gateway hotel, down by the airport. And celebrating it’s tenth year, promises to offer fans over 21; a naughtier side of paradise! I’ve personally had the great opportunity to enjoy seven FroliCon events over the years, and look forward to my eighth next weekend. I’ll be seen hosting and emceeing several events and contests over FroliCon weekend, and always enjoy interacting with all the amazing fans completely unafraid of their sexuality. This very special convention caters to a mixed sexuality crowd, and offers just as many educational seminars...covering every possible kink and fetish...you can imagine. So not just one giant Bacchanal style party, but a thinking fan’s convention; where it’s ok to watch classroom-style demonstrations on how to properly tie your partner up, for everyone’s optimal pleasure. TM: Weirdly, I kind of enjoyed lip-syncing for my life. I was 3000% confident I was going to win the lip-sync and Blondie is my favorite band. It was electric! DA: Looking back, is there anything you would have changed about your RuPaul experience? TM: As a comedian, when the judges said they weren’t laughing out loud yet, I knew I needed to push it farther. Unfortunately, I received my first critique just before being eliminated. I wasn’t given a chance to use the advice like other queens. Kandy, Pearl, Katya, etc. DA: Talk about your favorite queens from this season. TM: I would swim an ocean to see Katya perform. Soooo good. She and I have become super close. Also Tempest DuJour is amazing as well. DA: Who are you not a fan of from this season? TM: Kennedy has said some messed up things to me at one point or another, but I am so used to pageant queens shading me that I barely even notice.

efore catapulting to pop stardom, Kelly Clarkson was one of us. In many ways, she still is. The original American Idol, who memorably erupted into waterworks when she won the first season of the reality show in 2002, wasn’t always able to muster the willpower she’s instilled in the gay community through her uncompromising persona and liberating pop anthems, including those on her latest album, Piece by Piece. That’s just the charm of Clarkson, who opens up in our new interview about overcoming teen inferiorities, diehard lesbian fans who call themselves “Kezbos,” driving Bette Midler to “suicide,” and that night she sipped some wine, felt “sad” for our generation and wrote a powerful song about it.
so I guess it’s not so hard for me to think (the gay community) might like my music. But I don’t know ... I’m not an icon. I’ve only been doing this for 13 years. You’ve gotta be doing it for a good 20 to gain that status. DA: When it comes to your strong bond with the gay community, how do you explain that connection?
David Atlanta: OK, Kelly, take my KC: I have a connection, but I don’t look hand. I wanna go back with you. at it differently. DA: The song “Invincible” alludes to overcoming self-doubts and insecurities. In your own life, when did you most experience those hurdles, and when did you finally accept yourself for who you are? KC: In high school, and you know, I was having a hard time. I guess all people go through it – it’s just a different time period for all of us. When I was a sophomore in high school, it was the one time (in my life) I felt like I was insecure. It was just an awkward stage for me. Well, as was junior high, but I just wasn’t aware of it yet. (Laughs) I’ve always been different. I’ve never been the girl that has to feel like she has to get all dolled up every day. I’ve always been kind of a tomboy. I’ve always been very outspoken, and, you know, my mom is too. I don’t know any other way to be. It’s just my personality. In my sophomore year of high school, I got a little insecure about (my personality), because girls can be mean and I got the lead in this role in choir. No sophomore was ever supposed to get it, so people were just really mean about it. And, like, mean. Worse than the movie! (Laughs) It made me insecure, and not so much (in regard to) my music or as a singer or an artist – just me as a person. I was like, “Is there something wrong (with me)?” I would go, “But I think I’m a good friend.” That was the only time that I was really doubtful of my person. took me a while, man. And there was a lot of heartache throughout those years. You know, as long as she’s happy, I don’t care either way, and neither does my husband. And we have two other kids as well, and we don’t care either way for all of them. DA: If one of them were to come out to you, what would you say? KC: I’d be like, “Awesome! When do we meet him or her?” Honestly, it’s so funny, it doesn’t even register in my world as different. I don’t know why. But yeah, it doesn’t. I’m glad it doesn’t! DA: Why was it important for you to include a gay couple getting engaged in the “Heartbeat Song” video? KC: What’s funny is, I wasn’t even actually the one who picked all the people! Marc (Klasfeld), the director, and his team did. But it was funny, because I was doing an interview here in Nashville at one of the radio stations and one of the DJs there was like, “I’m gonna be in your video DA: Growing up in small-town Texas, homosexuality. The Rally Against Discrimination by Jason Mietelski
I
t was a glorious day to gather with other LGBT Georgians and our allies to take a stand against the impending “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” (SB 129) sponsored by Senator Josh McKoon (R. Ga)--legislation that could pave the way for businesses and the like to legally discriminate against citizens and their families across the state. Amongst the crowd of several hundred were supporters of LGBT rights from Atlanta and the furthest stretches of Georgia, including many clergy members representing various denominations and faith groups, who all are of one mind that their religions are about love, not hate. Moreover, it was agreed that the First Amendment already provides sufficient protection to citizens, outlining a clear separation between church and state. The message that was sent to “those working beneath the gold dome” was crystal clear: Georgians are not going to sit idly by and allow our elected officials to legislate discrimination against anyone for any reason. I spoke with Senator Vincent Fort (D. Ga) after the rally who assured me that he’s doing everything in his power to work with both Republican and Democratic leaders to defeat this insidious piece of legislation that, if passed, could have the power to negatively impact our jobs, families, and rights to live freely alongside every other citizen in Georgia. Senator Fort assured me that there is no other anti-LGBT legislation attached to this bill. As I looked out upon the gathering of same sex partners and their children, older men and women who’d been partnered for decades, and the multitudes of those who support love and equality, I realized how lucky I was to be standing at the Georgia Capitol, on the right side of history. 32 | 4.1.15

On Thursday, April 9 from 6 to 9 p.m., hundreds will gather in celebration and support of a charity that provides a continuum of housing and supportive services for homeless and low-income individuals, families, and children affected by HIV/AIDS. The Stars Party is famous for their unique and wonderful silent auction featuring over 100 items. Some of the highlights of the auction include: two pairs of Delta tickets for domesticonly flights, a weekend stay at a beautiful lake house on Lake Oconee, and a complimentary stay at a sumptuous villa in Mexico. This year The Stars Party has a goal of $40,000. “We look forward to The Stars Party every year,” says Director of Development, Jon Santos. “It’s so great to have our most ardent supporters and partners under one roof benefitting our cause, and we’re thrilled to continue celebrating our mission.” The fabulous Will Scruggs Band will be providing jazz standards for attendees to mix and mingle to. Off to the Races Annual Easter Drag Races by Jason Mietelski

et ready for the Armorettes’s annual Easter Drag Races this Sunday at The Hideaway. There’ll be lots of games (sign up early to ensure a spot) to include an Easter egg hunt, top and bottom contest, jello shooter toss, lots of drinks, a bonnet contest, and of course, drag at its very finest. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Armorettes’s PWA fund. To date, from the group’s inception in 1979, the Armorettes have raised more than 2 million dollars to help care for those affected by HIV/AIDS—so you can rest assured you’ll not only have a fabulous time, but you’ll also be helping out a great cause. I recently had the opportunity to catch up to a couple of the hottest Armorettes cast members (they only accept 2 new girls each year), and this is what they had to say: How long have you been an Armorette? Betty Bennett: I competed in the Mrs. Barfly competition last June and was formally accepted a couple of months after auditioning.

I’ve always had a larger than life personality who enjoys entertaining the people around me. How do you feel the Armorettes have helped our community? BB: Not only have the Armorettes raised more than 2 million dollars for people affected by HIV, but they also seem to bring people out of a certain darkness. I don’t have HIV and until recently didn’t know many people who were positive… so watching these girls express their beautiful selves and make people smile and laugh each week helps me realize there’s something great in EVERYONE. I don’t want the LGBT community to lose sight of that. RC: Just one?! Besides the Armorettes raising over 2.1 million dollars for people living with HIV/AIDS, I would say that the group has provided much needed laughter and joy during times that were quite dark in the community. Any advice for someone who’s dreaming about becoming a drag performer? BB: Come to my house and let me make you over! I wanna be a drag mama! Don’t let anyone tell you what drag’s all about. No matter what anyone says there’ll always be someone who gets it, and if they don’t, fuck them! If you’re serious about it then come to our next audition this summer!
