Being in the military prepared me for a lot of things, but not my HIV diagnosis. I found it difficult to take medication every day. Fortunately, with the help of my doct or at the VA, taking my medicine is just another part of my morning routine, brush my teeth, wash my face, and take my meds. By sticking to my medication, doctor visits and supportgroups, I stay healthy and happy. As a support group leader, now I’m helping others to get into their own routine.

She could also throw a curveball and work with some up-andcoming producers/artists like MNEK or Years & Years (#thefeels). Producer Alex da Kid (Imagine Dragon’s “Radioactive”) is allegedly behind “American Oxygen” which is supposed to be on RhiRhi’s new album. The song is featured in a March Madness TV commercial. (March Madness is a basketball event which occurs every year, apparently. Colleges and universities all try to win as many touchdowns as they can score to make it to the World Series… I think.)
DANCE BANGER We need to dance. We need to dance to a Rihanna banger. It’s been way too long since she has given us a dance-floor-filling track and quite frankly, I’m jones-ing. “FourFiveSeconds” is not a song that I want to think about when I hear Queen Rih… I think “We Found Love” or “Where Have You Been”. I get Rihanna probably wanted to take a risk and, I guess, she succeeded but let’s get back to what you’re amazingly good at… club bangers. Rihanna is quoted as saying that her new album is going to be “timeless” but bringing in a Beatle and The World’s Biggest Ass isn’t going to make you timeless, hunty. w
KEY COLLABORATORS
Rihanna’s New Album Wish List We all love Rihanna! We love her rachetness and her uber talented ways of throwing out shade on Instagram and Twitter to everyone from TLC to MTV to random high school girls… All Hail The Queen Of Shade (insert painting fingernails emoji). So by now, everyone knows that Queen RihRih has a new album coming out this year. We also know that it’s been waaaaaay too long since she released her last album. What we don’t know is when said album is going to be released and that is what makes us want it even more! She knows we want it and yet she has zero phucks to give. Not only is she being super coy about her upcoming album but she practically doesn’t even care that the entire world is basically on their knees begging for some new material. The highly anticipated album dubbed R8 (her eighth studio album) is probably the year’s most anticipated release. So when it does come out, here is a list of things we hope is going to be on it.
NEW PRODUCERS Let’s have some super awesome producers back on the album. Not Calvin Harris. She’s been there. She’s done that. She’s killed it. Why should she go back to someone who has worked with basically EVERYONE in the music biz?! Granted, the talented producer is a machine when it comes to churning out hits but RihRih is able to pick and choose whoever the hell she wants to take advantage of… I mean use… I mean collaborate with. 22 | 4.8.15
Now this is where the possibilities could get exciting! Florence Welch (from Florence + The Machine) has already told the press that Rihanna is sampling her track “Only If For Tonight” which makes me smile inside and do a little happy dance. House queen Kiesza has also stated that Rihanna has recorded a few of her songs stating, “The one that Rihanna has cut is one that I never in a million years expected her to pick out, so it was super interesting.” And if Rihanna were to team back up with Sia for another killer ballad like “Diamonds” we all would do a little happy dance as well. Sia has the ability to create beautiful images with her dark and meaningful lyrics. From “Diamonds” to Bey’s “Pretty Hurts” to “Perfume” by Britney, Sia has penned these all and they all have been hits. Sticking with another Sia ballad will undoubtedly give Rihanna that “timeless” feel that she’s aiming for. #teamrihandsia So Rihanna please stop dangling those Instagram clips of your new music right in front of our faces like one of those dancers at the East Atlanta Ballet. Enough with the shenanigans! I’m gonna need you to just go ahead and release your new album already. Or… if you want… just go ahead and send me a copy instead. OK, Fenty? Great! I’ll be expecting that in the mail here shortly. And don’t you worry David Atlanta fans… I’ll be sure to let you borrow it. Maybe. Probably not. Eh, forget I mentioned it. K byeeeeeeeeeee. You’re welcome.

DA: You have auditioned seven times. What do you think was different about this year? KD: What I would tell any girl who is auditioning is to just be yourself. Don’t try to give them what you think they want. Just be who you are, whoever that is. I’m a kitshy-queen, Mother-ofthe-bride character. Before, I was trying to give that persona of fierceness that was sooo uncomfortable, and sooo not me. DA: How would you describe yourself being “kitshy”? KD: In my appearance. It’s that 1950’s-1960’s style, campy Peggy Lee. You know, the queens of yesteryear. DA: Do you have any regrets from the show? KD: Oh God no! I don’t believe in regrets. Do you? DA: Sometimes when I look back at the things I’ve done, I think about the things I might have changed. Would you have changed anything about your experience?
Kasha Davis: The Kitshy Queen This week’s episode tested the girl’s ability to showcase both their red carpet looks, and their comedic chops as they presented the first DESPY Awards (to each other). While the presenter’s banter sometimes felt a little wooden, the acceptance speeches allowed a number of them to shine. Hell, this challenge even brought fan-favorite Pearl “out of her shell” – pardon the overused pun. In the end it was Kandi Ho and Mrs. Kasha Davis in the bottom two. In yet another close call, Kasha was sent home. I caught up with Kasha the next afternoon to rehash her time on the show and get to know her a little bit better. David Atlanta: How are you feeling today?
KD: No! What I would change might be that… well, I look at Pearl. I envy her. I enjoy what she is and what she brings to the table. I love that she really lives her passion. I’ve done [Kasha] part time. I’ve performed on the side, and I’ve also had a career in business. When I look at Pearl I sometimes wish I could go back and pursue [Kasha] full time, at that age. DA: Who were some of your favorite girls from this season? KD: Well I love Ginger Minj. She’s just every thing. She’s a fabulous entertainer and she’s got a big heart. Katya is just hysterical. Max is super creative. And Fame is just beyond beautiful! The one I pick on the most, is probably the one that I like the most…Pearl. DA: Why do you like Pearl the most?
KD: What I see in Pearl is kind of Kasha Davis: Oh my gosh! I’m a delight. It is what it is. I had a what I wish I had done younger. She’s just balls to the wall and good time, I hope that everyone else did. she just goes for it. I just admire DA: There has been a lot of talk about the choices in that. elimination this season. After watching the episode, do DA: Tell me some dirt on the you think Kandi should have gone instead of you? girls you didn’t like. KD: Oh course! It’s a competition right? I do love Kandi. I wouldn’t wear blue feathers, but that’s a whole other story. I KD: Kathy Griffin. (We both laugh) think the reality is that everybody there is very talented – I’m not going to lie, I should have stayed. Watch every week as David Atlanta interviews each DA: What was your favorite part of being on the show? queen hours after the sashay away. We’ll release it online KD: I think for me, because I auditioned for so many years, just get- and then in print the followting on the show was a dream come true. I’ve been able to have ing issue. The Secret to Expanding Your Business

hh, networking. It’s probably the second oldest profession. Long long ago some prostitute (the oldest profession) probably decided that he/ she wasn’t getting any more business in his or her cave, and decided it was time to meet new potential clients in other caves. Thus networking for business was born. Since then, networking has become an art. Networking is a combination of social skills, business acumen, and unadulterated confidence. These days social networking has take the forefront and become an essential tool in our networking arsenal. But what about person to person networking? It is not a lost art. There are lots of opportunities to hone your craft and make those essential connections. HOOKED A
veteran of nakedness, Olly Murs was fueling our straight-boy fantasies long before Nick Jonas. Stripping at London’s prestigious G-A-Y club, frequent underwear-only selfies, a leather jacket-clad cover photo in December’s Attitude magazine – we’re as addicted to Murs’ sex appeal as we are to his pop confections.
Following the release of the British “X Factor” alum’s fourth studio album, Never Been Better, Murs spoke candidly about how he and other artists use sex to market their music, his biggest regret in life and how he considers fans grabbing his junk a “compliment.” David Atlanta: You were one of the original Nick Jonases – you got naked for the gay community years before he did. Olly Murs: (Laughs) Yeah! I’ve done a few naked shots for the gay magazines. My body is in demand by the gay folks – I can’t complain! I don’t think I’ve got the best body in the world, but no, it’s very flattering. It’s always great to do those magazines and also to show people that – even though I’m a straight guy – I’m very comfortable with my sexuality, so I think that’s a great thing to do in those magazines, and it’s great fun. I did a gig once at G-A-Y in the UK – a very renowned club, and a lot of artists go there to perform – and obviously when you do a performance there are girls screaming and going crazy for you, and obviously at a gay club it was a lot of men and it was quite strange, a different sort of noise, you know? It’s very, RAWR! DA: Are we gay men more touchyfeely than the girls? OM: I think you are actually. You’re a bit more forward. You have a lot more confidence. And that’s a good thing! DA: What’s the grabbiest a fan has gotten at a show?

ON OLLY
Pop star talks handsy fans, gay-baiting and sharing a sweater with Sam Smith by Chris Azzopardi
OM: When we did the 2012 tour and I walked into the audience, one of my fans went to grab my bits, which was quite interesting and quite funny. DA: How do you react to grabby fans? OM: Oh, it’s fine. It’s cheeky and playful. And a compliment!
DA: When Nick Jonas started showing more skin, people claimed he was gay-baiting. As someone who’s straight but open to getting naked for the gay community, I’m curious: What are your thoughts on “gay-baiting”? OM: I don’t know why people would say that. You’re just giving people what they want, and sure, there are a lot of gay men out there that love Nick Jonas and wanna see him, but women wanna see him naked as well. At the end of the day, it’s up to the artists. I don’t have to take my top off, but when I was asked by a magazine like Attitude to do it, I was like, “Why not?” I’m not against it, and you hope you get a good reaction out of people, but as artists we’re always trying to promote and win new fans over. It’s playful, and also, what’s wrong with an artist taking his top off? DA: What’s the trick to shooting a nude photo? OM: Make sure you have a good diet before you do it. Make sure you feel good with your body and you’re comfortable with it. Obviously I wasn’t massively comfortable the last time I did it because it was the first time I got naked in about two years, so my body changed a little bit. I wasn’t quite as fit as I was before, but it was good though. Tuck that stomach in at all times! DA: You’ve been hitting the gym. Where have you seen the most progress? OM: Well… day one started yesterday. I’m on day two today. (Laughs) And it’s going well! I’m getting there, you know? DA: In an age where the stigma of male body hair is in flux, you seem to embrace yours. OM: Always. I think we always talk about hair on bodies, and sometimes when you take it off you just look a bit too young. I’m quite proud of a bit of masculine hair. DA: When you measure the success you’ve had globally, where does America fall? How do you feel about your success here versus worldwide? davidatlanta.com | 33
OM: Yeah, I got to share a sweater with him, and it was a beautiful thing! I don’t think people realize how tall Sam is. He’s a very tall man! But he’s also very charming and really honest. Sam’s great. DA: How tall are you? OM: I’m about 5-foot-9 on a good day. He’s about 6 foot, maybe. DA: How did you and Sam initially meet? OM: I met Sam at a gig. I can’t remember (exactly where), but then during X Factor (in December 2014) we had a good chat again and he’s a lovely guy. Really great singer, and obviously had an amazing week at the Grammys. He deserves it. DA: During the song “Stick with Me,” you refer to regrets and how we all have a few. What’s your greatest regret? OM: I don’t live life by regrets, but I went to college in the UK and didn’t go to university, and I’d love to have done that and experienced that. I really didn’t work hard enough in school to do it, and I regret a bit that I didn’t. But, obviously, I’m really happy where my life got me to now, so I can’t complain. I’m in a really great place as a person now, and I’ve never really had many tough times in my career where it’s been terrible; it’s always been quite positive with me. This album really is a true reflection of me realizing what I’ve got.
OM: Everywhere is different – for example, in Europe I’ve got a much bigger fan base, and obviously Australia too – but I don’t try to compare places. I just know certain markets are a little bit harder, and America is one of them. Every time I’ve come back, though, it’s been amazing. Just gotta keep working hard. And I think the fans in America are amazing – a really great bunch of people. DA: Would you say this is your most serious and personal album? DA: Will you be touring America? OM: Yeah, definitely the most serious, and it definitely has a lot OM: Yeah, we hope so. At the moment we haven’t announced of balls behind it. It’s exciting to do an album and put your life it, but we’re hoping to come back to the U.S. at some point later and soul into it, and it’s bigger and better than the last three on in the year. albums. It’s the best one I’ve done. I’m excited to hear what all the American fans think of it. DA: Around Christmas of last year you were in a sweater foursome with not only Demi Lovato and One Direction’s DA: Describe the album as if it were a candy. Niall Horan, but also Sam Smith – all of you shared an oversized ugly sweater, and it was amazing. OM: It’s a Gobstopper – long-lasting. You’re chewing it and enjoying every piece of it until the end. 34 | 4.8.15

MASCULINE V I
n a day and age when the thick lines between types of peoples are getting thinner and thinner, one giant line in the sand caught our attention for a little exploration. Masculine acting guys versus feminine acting guys. It seems like the world is both awash with both and yet it seems that when you are looking, a true died-in-the-wool butch guy, or a real “purse falling out of the mouth” nelly guy are so hard to find.
Maybe it’s because we’re a lot more similar than we think.
ON BEING BUTCH by Jason Mietelski
Growing up gay was never going to be easy, but growing up butch presented me with a separate set of issues. My perception of masculinity was heavily influenced by my father, a rough-edged man who showed no emotion, encouraged me to be tough and never cry, and took me to watch movies starring Stallone, Eastwood and Schwarzenegger. Since I loved getting my hands dirty and building things with power tools, no one ever thought I might be gay, and this sealed the edges around the door of my closet, making it very difficult for me to come out. It also created a dark period in my life and a chasm between me and the rest of the world. Thankfully AOL helped me come out when I was 23, enabling me to close that gap and make a connection with the gay community. Ah, my gay brothers, some of whom have judged me for “acting straight”, are ironically those whom I’ve found most attractive. I’ve always respected the more feminine guys for their strength and beauty; I find them intriguing—so much different than me yet paradoxically similar. Perhaps the judgmental ones assume I’ve had an easier life, escaping a lot of the childhood angst and harassment, when in reality my struggle was mostly internalized but just as real as theirs. 40 | 4.8.15
The struggle today is still real, though not as difficult as in the past. Even working in a gay-centric business I’m faced with a perpetual coming out process. There’s always someone who assumes I’m heterosexual and is seemingly shocked when I tell them the truth. And of course, when people, thinking I’m straight, voice their homophobic views, the internalized shame I’ve worked so hard to overcome rears its ugly head, making the coming out process more difficult—though it also strengthens me each time I do. Yes, I’m a gold star gay, proud and thankful to be who I am. I’m glad to be butch and smash the stereotypes that so many people still clutch to as truth. I consider it a privilege and an honor to represent gay male masculinity, the underrepresented half of our community who have gone undetected, in my opinion, for too long. Contrary to popular belief, I think gay people are different than our hetero brothers and sisters. And that makes me happy. We are beautiful, colorful, and our differences, butch and femme (and the spectrum in between!), create the cohesion and light that makes gays fabulous!
S FEMININE SISSY BOYS REPRESENT! by Jeffery Silvey
As a more effeminate gay man people often make the assumption that I get bullied, made fun of, discriminated against, and insulted due to my effeminacy. In a world where the Macho Man is considered the ideal, I understand where the assumption comes from, but none of it is true. Honestly, the bullying, joking, discriminating, and insults come (ironically) straight from other gay guys.
one way to know if a gay man is in fact masculine is if he says so on his Grindr profile. If not then you better believe he is a squealing, lisping, fairy. But that doesn’t make sense. Not every effeminate man has a lisp. Not every effeminate man wears make up or accidentally shops on the wrong side of the GAP. I’ve seen effeminate men that can take down a deer with one bullet and I’ve seen masculine men who squealed when Wicked came into town. It doesn’t matter either way because being masculine or feminine is not a character defining quality.
There is the discussion of Fem. vs. Masc. It dictates the vast majority of Grindr profiles, but the discussion fails to retain water outside of the gay context. In my experiences, people don’t have a problem with my effeminacy. I have found that people respond more to a person that they feel is being authentically themselves. I haven’t tried to be someone I’m not and in turn I’ve had great interactions. But that is OUTSIDE the gay community. The whole issue has resulted in some rather silly discussion points. The most When it comes to the judgement of gay ridiculous is “If I wanted someone femimen, it is gay men that are the harsh- nine I’d date a woman.” But that doesn’t est. If a gay man has a straight friend, make sense. Love isn’t that limited, so then that friend will not care about how why should your thought process be? feminine or masculine you are. But other gay men do care. Effeminate men carry a Just be yourself. Be what you want and social stigma within the gay community be who you want. Be what you want because they don’t reinforce the macho- people to describe you as; if you want man image that the mainstream media them to say you’re fearless then do so valiantly showcases. something fearless. Don’t worry about who is feminine and who is masculine, It seems to me that some masculine because it really doesn’t matter. If you gay men have internalized homophobia, don’t like effeminate men, then that’s which is why they only hunt other mas- fine. No one said you had to date one, culine gay men. Maybe because they’re but that also doesn’t mean you have to not comfortable with their own sexuality be rude. advice
I have three words for you, KIT: Just Go Commando. But that don’t solve your dilemna, does it? These three words should help get your undies unbunched: File, Baskets, and Clips. File: Instead of just shoving your skivvies into a drawer, fold them carefully and line them up vertically; kind of like manila file folders. This way you’ll have quick and easy access to the entire collection. Baskets: Put your treasured trousseau on display. Roll your underwear tightly and arrange them into woven or wicker baskets. Thus artfully assembled, the collection will brighten your room and keep them all handy.
Dear Dom,
Every Single Question... Every Single Answer
Clips: This DIY project is my favorite. Buy a big package of wooden clothespins. You can paint them to match your decor, if you like. Place a small dab of glue onto each clip and affix them to a wall, or the back of a door, into two equally spaced vertical lines. After the glue dries, clip your underwear to the wall for all to see. If you’ve got a fetish, I say, “Fly your freak flag high!” Dear Dom, My mother died last week, and now all I can think about is getting laid. Is this a normal psychosis or am I alone in my desires after the loss of a lived one? Sex Over Sadness So, you popped a boner at the burial? You had a stiffie near the stiff? Your situation is unusual, but not unheard of. I spoke with several counselors. They agree that this is your psyche sending a warning, SOS.
In his 1920 book, Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Sigmund Freud makes the theory of Todestriebe, or Death Drive, which is the “opposition between the ego or death instincts and the sexual My friend is always hooking up. It’s almost daily. I or life instincts.” don’t want to tell him how to live, but he’s starting to exhaust all possibilities of me not getting his sloppy In a way, it’s a good thing that it was your mom who passed seconds. Am I being a prude if I tell him to leave some away. Just imagine if it had been your dog. of the fish in the sea for me? Dear Dom,
Not Enough Tail Fresh catch is for the Gorton’s fisherman, NET. There is very little possibility that whomever you are having encounters with, has not already been had by someone you know. Atlanta has less than a six-degrees of separation. We’re all in each others net at some point. Everyone should follow the catch-andrelease rule. That way you won’t be annoyed if your fish has been hooked before. Dear Dom, My underwear fetish has taken over more than my closet. It seems my entire bedroom has been taken over. Is there an organizational method that will help me keep my undies in check? Keeping It Tidy 64 | 4.8.15

ARIES (Mar. 20 – Apr. 19): An element of the mystical and fanciful will play a significant part in your world. This energy is likely to come to you unexpectedly, and your first reaction might be to shy away from it. Believe in the power of thought and intention.
LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): Your actions may be erratic and spontaneous, but they will also most certainly be powerful. You may be driven by a sharp intellectual mind. You may be feeling brainier than usual. Genius ideas surround you and your actions as long as you keep an open mind.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): You may sense that the actions around you are fueled by selfish motives. You may be the only one who really sees what’s going on. You feel like an observer on a mountain looking down with disdain on the people below. Collect data now and act later.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): Take some time to break out of your normal routine and see what’s going on in the world around you. You could be so focused and so driven toward a specific goal that you fail to take into account the rest of the world.
GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): Take action that will help you find greater freedom in your life. In an attempt to please the people around you, you may be giving up too much. Before you know it, you may be in shackles connected to people, and commitments that you can’t seem to extricate yourself from.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 20): Don’t feel like you’re obligated to jump through other people’s hoops. Just because someone wants you to do something doesn’t mean you have to oblige. Bend over backward for yourself and not for the entertainment of others.
CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): You may have to consciously let go of some of your plans, and simply leave things up to chance. The element of the unexpected can help you out quite a bit, so work with it instead of trying to keep it at bay. The flow of events should lead you toward a place of freedom.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19): You may be acting unconsciously. Suddenly you’re halfway through a task and wondering what you really hoped to accomplish by starting it in the first place. Be more conscious of your energy and how you use it.
LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): Don’t let the positive energy of the day pass you by. You’re able to grab hold and make greater use of it than most, so don’t hesitate to get going early and keep on going until late. Stop contemplating the issues and take action.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): You can rely on your good luck to pull you out of difficult situations this week. This is one week when you can launch yourself headfirst without worrying too much about the outcome. Trust that whatever you undertake will work out fortuitously for you in the long run.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): You may be tempted to make up your own rules, because you really aren’t happy with the ones before you. Be careful of doing so without first understanding the full implications. There’s no reason that you have to stay within traditional constraints.
PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 19): You may have your guard up as you fend off people and situations that have caught you unprepared. Be careful about putting up such big walls that you can’t see over them. The danger is that it makes it difficult for you to look out.
