“I fought for my country. Now I’m bringing the fight to my HIV.” Reggie - Atlanta, GA Living with HIV since 1985.

As a military guy, I know how to follow orders. So when my doctor told me to start and stay in treatment, I listened. Now my treatment regimen is part of my life. That means I take my pills, I keep my medical appointments, I stay connected to support groups and I keep up with the latest education. Treatment works for me, and now I show other veterans who are HIV-positive how it can work for them.

Factory, and you’d be close to visualizing what a twat I was as a kid. Seriously, I was a military school, grade-A brat to my family.) On a lark, or revenge from being a cunt to them all those years, my parents thought it would be a great laugh to watch me try and then certainly spit out all those strange Mexican foods. Apparently, the joke was on them. (Don’t worry, I may have been a menace to my parents...but they were sometimes assholes too) I ate everything they let me try...and only rejected foods that ‘burned my mouth’ as I couldn’t handle spicy foods just yet. As an adult, living in Atlanta has really given me some amazing Mexican foods to try, that I might not otherwise have encountered. Alma Cocina introduced me to guacamole with crab and grapefruit in it. Bone Garden makes the best tamale I’ve ever eaten, and if you serve any kind of cheese set on fire...I’ll marry you.

Tacos & Tamales & Nachos, Oh My!!

A food snob was born the day I tried Mexican food, and it really was the event that inspired me to be adventurous and try different foods. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a particular eater. I hate mayonnaise and liver, but I know I’m not alone. It doesn’t stop me from trying different things, and celebrating cultures for their triumphs. One of the great things about trying any kind of new food, is that chance you will stumble across your next ‘favorite’ thing to obsess over. And who doesn’t want to share the ‘next best thing’ with the world? Raise your margaritas high, and toast to a very Happy Cinco de Mayo!!

Not to be overshadowed by the imperial arrival of May the Fourth, May the Fifth is one of my favorite holidays. And it should be yours, too!! Celebrating a glorious, yet unlikely, Mexican victory over the French at the “Battle of Puebla”; a celebration was born, and has wildly grown to global proportions, over the last 150 years. This, Cinco de Mayo was born. I’m so obsessed with the amazing flavors that our Mexican neighbor to our country’s south, brings to our citizens. No other culture offers my palate such a well-rounded assortment. I could honestly eat Mexican food every single day of my life, I really really could. There are days, that more than one meal has some kind of taco in it. I’m not kidding. Sure, I love all kinds of amazing foods from all around the world, I’m certain we all do. But, how many of those amazing countries offer an equal amount of fantastic appetizers, entrees, deserts, and beverage options that totally sends your mouth over the moon? Ok ok, Italian is an agreeably close second place. I can certainly fuck up some focaccia bread drenched in fresh pesto, with the best of them. One of my earliest memories, was from when I was about 5 or 6 years old. My parents took me to a dimly lit restaurant, to visit some friends, that glowed with neon lights (I’m pretty sure I’d never seen anything like that yet) and had the most interesting smells wafting in the air. I distinctly remember smelling fresh cooked tortillas (although I didn’t know what they were yet) and being hungry, and voicing my very bratty demands to eat...right then and there. DA: You don’t seem that sensitive. JDF: I can be sensitive, and I learned that from being on the show. If we could count how many times I cried on the show. That’s the worst part about it. I may cry maybe once or twice a year [in real life]. I was just so passionate about being on [RPDR] that I couldn’t help but be emotional. I just wanted that crown SO bad. Honey. Child. It tore me up! DA: Do you feel good about your time on the show? JDF: Yes, I’m definitely proud of myself. I’m a little bit upset that I didn’t get as far as I would like to go. The least I wanted for myself was top three. DA: One question that I really have wanted to ask you is if you have come out to your family since the show?

Jaidynn Diore Fierce Definitely… In a truly twisted decision, RuPaul brought all the previously eliminated queens back for this week’s maxi-challenge. Jaidynn came under the scrutiny of the judges panel, and in the third week in a row, ended up in the bottom two. I caught up with Jaidynn and learned how she felt about her time on RPDR.

JDF: My family has been watching the show. Two out of my three brothers were extremely supportive. My brothers are all very masculine hetero-manly men. I was so uncomfortable and I didn’t think they would accept it, but two out of the three was extremely supportive. The biggest thing was my mom. That was the one that I was most worried about. She actually just called me last night. I feel bad because I didn’t have the guts to tell her myself. I knew she would find out from the show though. I’m just glad that she didn’t blow up once she watched the episode. DA: I’m so glad that this is happening for you. It’s a great weight to have off your shoulders. How did you feel about all the girls coming back for this last episode?

JDF: Oh my gosh! That was a trip. It’s Ru’s show, and she has to do what she has to do. It was a creative twist though. Twisted me right off the show! I was actually excited for the makeover David Atlanta: I’ve wanted to talk to you for a while. challenge though. I would love to be on Drag U. How are you feeling today? Jaidynn Diore Fierce: I’m feeling better as time goes on. I was DA: Some of the girls have said that the show is a transa little depressed for a moment, I won’t lie. (laughs) formative experience. Do you DA: You were having such a run! What happened the feel like you grew from RPDR? past couple of episodes? JDF: Definitely! I realized a lot JDF: Yeah…I just sort of crashed didn’t I? It was just hard for of things about myself from me. I was losing confidence as time went by. I was so into my watching myself on TV. One of those things is how many head. facial expressions that I make. DA: I’m sensing a theme. Other girls that I’ve talked to (laughs) Apparently, I make say that exact thing: “I was so into my head.” Is it really funny faces all the time. that stressful over time? Watch every week as David JDF: Oh definitely! I didn’t think it would be that stressful, but it Atlanta interviews each is. I usually try to keep a positive attitude. It just got so hard. It’s queen hours after the sashay one thing to watch the show, and it’s totally another thing to be away. We’ll release it online on the show and actually be there and feel the pressure. and then in print the following issue. It’s the best way I didn’t even think about the millions of people in the audience to know your queens this that are judging you as well. I think I have to learn to have thicker season. 5 Days of

CRAZY CINCO

CELEBRATION! by Jonathan Bugg

very year Cheshire Bridge Latin restaurant, Las Margaritas, and more importantly owner Papi, throws an all out orgy of in celebration of Cinco De Mayo. This year is even bigger and better with a total of five days of parties leading up to Tuesday, May 5. As an added incentive, a percentage from the door from Papi’s Carnival are being donated to Mike Woodside’s charity, Ready 4 Hope. R4H raises money throughout the year for AIDS Walk. I caught up with Papi just in time to get an idea of what’s in store this weekend.

We’re getting closer to Cinco, but we’re not quite there yet. Join guest emcee Gaby and DJ Vanesa aka Audioprism for a Spanglish Cinco Karaoke. If you’re the best singer that night you stand to win $50 house cash prize. It all starts at 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. Remember, all during these events Las Margaritas is offering up $5 margaritas or sangrias.

On Saturday, Las Margaritas is bringing you South Beach Reggaetón and Latin House night with another resident DJ from the Havana Club, DJ Venez. Party starts at 8 p.m. with giant South Beach Monsters for $15. Think of it as a huge margarita with small Latin beer bottles turned upside-down in it. Those alone should have your head spinning. As with every night of frivolity, there will be a plethora of Cinco De Mayo giveaways from sexy Cuervo models.

Papi is bringing conga drum sensation, Deshone from the Havana Club to get your feet a-thumpin. Also from the Havana Club, DJ Louii will be spinning all the sexy Latin beats. Together, they give you that “bienvenido a Miami” flair perfect for the sunny weather we’ve been having. Inside the patio local favorite DJ Karlitos from the Jungle assures that you will never be too far from the party.

So it’s finally here! The main event. The one you’ve all bee waiting for. Get Ready for Joining Hearts’ Change of Seasons by Jason Mietelski

L

isten up guys: Tea is gonna be served up loud and proud on Sunday, May 3 at The Jungle, (2115 Faulkner RD. NE) during Joining Hearts’ annual Change of Seasons dance. Absolut drink specials will be served to fuel the mood, the infamous Gummy Bear shots will keep you energized and dancing, and Absolut gift baskets as well as tickets to the Joining Hearts annual pool party in July are going to be raffled off. Grooves will be provided by the dynamic duo, DJ Travis and DJ Eric. “It’s not your daddy’s Tea Dance,” they say. Or is it? The history of gay T-dances is rich and colorful…it was once illegal to knowingly serve alcohol to gay men, so we were forced to take our (tea) party underground, drinking, dancing and hooking up in the early afternoon on weekends in the hopes to avoid a raid by police, with enough time to sneak back home before work on Monday. As we progressed into the T-dances of the 70s, we championed working class men and strove to destroy hetero-induced stereotypes; after all, REAL men wore blue jeans and drank beer from dirty glasses. So, although there are sure to be all types of gay men dancing their asses off at Change of Seasons, the Daddies will be the ones stealing the spotlight. (Jeans, leather and fur are certainly encouraged!)

34 | 4.29.15

Let’s not forget the reason for the dance: Change of Seasons was introduced in the mid-90s by Mike Glazer, Glenn Kinnard and several others to create an event that ushered in the summer season and offered Atlanta something akin to the White Party in Palm Springs. The party, which ended in 2000, was brought back to life by Joining Hearts in 2009 as a fund raising T-dance for the LGBT community to have a great time and benefit a worthy cause: raising money (so far Joining Hearts has donated nearly $2M to its beneficiaries) to provide housing and support for people in Atlanta afflicted by HIV/AIDS. Besides,

despite living in the age of Grindr, Jack’d, and Scruff, this is a great way to meet new guys, live and in the flesh! The folks at Joining Hearts would like to thank Alan Collins for offering The Heretic as the original venue for the dance; however, the location was changed to The Jungle because they could offer you plenty of food to eat and more space for more guys! Make sure to order your tickets early online for a $15 donation at joininghearts.org, or make a $20 donation at the door. ID will be required as this is a 21 and up event.

his week’s cover model J. Daniel is a trainer (obviously, look at that body), plus he’s a rising actor/model. He graciously agreed to strip it off and show Atlanta what good training and diet can do for a body. Here are five tips to get you ready to show some skin this summer.

1. If you ‘ve always relied on food for emotional sustenance, you will have to get used to the idea of turning to other things to help you though tough times. 2. If you ‘re eating because you are stressed, angry, bored, or lonely you ‘ve got to find out what’s the root of those feeling and change it. 3. Losing water the right way is slower and the results you want to see will be longer in coming, but they’ll also be longest lasting. 4. The amount of water your body retains can easily change depending on what foods you eat. 5. Keep in mind that your body can actually only lose about 3 pounds of body fat a week.

Get Ready for ‘Grace and Frankie’ Your Next Netflix Binge by Elijah Sarkesian

B

e honest: who among us hasn’t engaged in a weekend of bingewatching a show on Netflix? Over the last few years, it’s become essential for anyone who keeps up with pop culture, especially with the original series that Netflix has created. Think about it – you or someone you know has spent a weekend running through all the new episodes of Orange is the New Black, House of Cards or Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – all shows, by the way, that have prominent LGBT characters and storylines.

If that’s not enough to sell you, the cast and creator should. Original 9 to 5 costars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are Grace and Frankie, respectively. I just have one request: whether it’s in the season that’s already been shot or in a second season, bring on Dolly Parton as a guest star so that we can have the 9 to 5 reunion everyone wants. So if you haven’t already, check out the trailer online now, and be sure to set aside your weekend sometime around May 8 to watch a few episodes (or, okay, run through all 13 episodes in one sitting). You know you won’t be the only one.

advice

I think you’re a chicken hawk that wants to bring one home to roost, HUT. But, if your motivation is sincerely benevolent, the need is enormous here in the Bible Belt. About 2,000 young people are homeless in Atlanta each night. A disproportionate 40% of them are gay or lesbian. Before throwing your doors open, keep in mind that most homeless kids are involved in some sor t of illegal activit y in order to simply sur vive –thef t, drugs, or prostitution. Helping kids is best accomplished within a solid suppor t net work.

Dear Dom,

Every Single Question... Every Single Answer Dear Dom, I am short. At only 5’-1”, I’m talking really short. The whole gay world towers over me. At clubs, I’m nearly trampled. How can a guy like me live and find love? Where Everyone’s Enormous WEE, you’re too tall for gay midget porn (yes, it’s a thing). But, you are the ideal height to be a locker room fluffer for the Atlanta Hawks. Believe me, those dribblers are gonna need some relief during the playoffs. Now that we have your career on track, let’s tackle your social life. Guys of even average stature can often feel overwhelmed in nightclubs. The loud music, flashing lights, and burgeoning crowds can cause the bravest to tremble. Yet, shorter men do have the big advantage of darting quickly amongst the patrons. If your pals want a fast round of drinks, you are the go-to guy. As for love, don’t despair, little man. Lots of gay men yearn for a diminutive dude. Oddly, it’s the taller guys that seem to really lust after littler lads. They can put you to use as maybe a lawn jockey. Dear Dom, I just bought my first home. Now that I have space, I’d like to help a homeless gay kid get back on his feet by giving him a place to live. What do you think? Helping Underprivileged Teens 72 | 4.29.15

presented by

the armorettes

ARIES (Mar. 20 – Apr. 19): Be quick to point out when you see an injustice. If someone says something offensive or untrue, don’t let it slide. If you do, you’re just as much at fault as the person who committed the offense.

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): You may join hands with a spokesperson who’s willing to attest to your honesty and good nature. This person is happy to step up and toot your horn for you. Next, learn how to toot your own horn.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): Your emotions may be erratic. You may want everyone to know what you’re feeling and act out in an immature manner to get noticed. In a way, you feel like a kid who will do anything to get a parent’s attention, even if the action is naughty.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): You may get frustrated when people who’ve taken shortcuts gain on your position. You believe that hard work is necessary to get where you need to go. Try not to get upset by others who take the easy route.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): You may be fidgeting, given your general restlessness. You’re anxious to get up and do some sort of song and dance, and yet you insist on waiting for the right time. If you feel ready to go on, don’t wait.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 20): You may not realize the effect of your erratic behavior on other people. They may try to understand your viewpoint, but at times it seems you’re talking in riddles. Slow down and clarify your thoughts before you dictate orders to others.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): Although you may pride yourself on your patience, this quality could be hard to come by this week. It’s possible that you’ve bent as far as you can and reached the breaking point. The final straw is about to be placed on the camel’s back.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19): It may be best if you stay out of the line of fire. Don’t get into others’ battles. By choosing sides, you create enemies. Use your compassion to soothe the situation. Use your caring nature to put out the fire.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): People could be exploding with rage all around, and you may wonder what the big deal is. If anyone is likely to have a level head through the chaos, it’s you, and this gives you a tremendous advantage in any situation.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): Although your general mood is good, this doesn’t mean your day will go off without a hitch. When it comes to projects and getting things done, you may be the one to take the lead. You’re good at motivating the troops to move as a unified force.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): The more you try to control others, the harder it will be to get what you want. People with equally strong wills are making it known they won’t be bullied by your manipulative behavior. If a straightforward approach doesn’t work, let it be.

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 19): Difficult situations may arise in which you feel like you’re doomed no matter what you do. Be honest and practical and make it a point not to choose sides or be biased in any way.

If you’re going to puck up the courage to talk to me in a bar, don’t shift your eyes from my face to my crotch within the first ten seconds.
