ATLANTA STREET FOOD FESTIVAL

NEON TREES

This July brings another season of heat and humidity to Atlanta, and also brings a slew of food trucks to Piedmont Park for the Atlanta Street Food Festival. Now in it’s fourth year the ASFF allows you to try everything that the food trucks of Atlanta can dish out. To avoid crazy long lines, get there early, eat, and then enjoy the park throughout the day.

Known for their energetic live performances, this rock band from Utah is going to take over the crowd at Center Stage. A few years back, lead singer Tyler Glenn came out of the closet and some of the songs in their latest album refer directly to that process. Tyler has had a difficult road of being both gay and Mormon.

But, I digress. Andrew and I had gotten married way back in 2008, in Victoria B.C. We never had any kind of high hope that Georgia would make it a legal marriage, here in the States. We thought it had a better shot of being recognized here in the South, than us ever seeing a legal, same-sex wedding in Atlanta. Desperate to do something locally, we had heard about Chef Art Smith’s 101 Gay Weddings Event, to be held at the Intercontinental in Buckhead. My friend Sheri Andrews was one of the organizers, and she asked us if we would come be a part of it. I said, “we’d love to”. Mostly, because it coincided with the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, and partly because I’m always down for free food and drink...no matter the occasion! Andrew and I could never have imagined in a million years, that SCOTUS would line up this Gay Weddings event to coincide with such a truly remarkable moment in our history. I’m pretty sure Oprah was involved, in making that happen for us.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Freedom!

People magazine, the AJC, FOX, ABC, and countless others snapped our pics, and shot footage of our wedding for their news blogs. It didn’t matter to us. We never felt so famous, and so grateful to people like Travis; who did a very simple thing of just signing a Marriage License for two middle aged homos. Two homos that have been together for twenty years, and are finally able to breathe for the first time. A true gift of Freedom, and I imagine we’re all a little bit obsessed with it.

Who wasn’t obsessed with what the Supreme Court Justices were going to say, last Friday morning? I know I was riveted, knowing that there were 5 rulings left to announce; but only 4 slated to be revealed throughout the day. My fingers were crossed, but I couldn’t help but worry that same-sex weddings were not going to be on the docket to discuss that Friday. It seemed a sure sign that we were all going to have to get through the weekend, before finding out the answer to this controversial issue affecting our GLBT community; as Monday had been an emergency addition, to announce the last docket. I was never so glad to be so wrong. I imagine many of us had similar faces, when Justice Kennedy opened the day at 10 a.m. EST with the verdict 5-4 on the Obergefell v. Hodges case. Who would have hedged bets, that the leading case out of the gate, was going to be the most important one to our Country’s GLBT community? By 10:06 a.m., I couldn’t see my computer monitor anymore, and I could barely keep my hands from trembling while texting my husband the jaw dropping news that “we could legally be married, now.” We, of course, partied in Midtown like all respectful homos do, on monumental days in History like this one. Apparently, everyone else had the same great idea. The streets were filled with thousands of revelers, much like our Pride event. 24 | 7.8.15

I

t can be easy to forget that we have straight allies all around us. The decisive ruling on Friday, June 26 for marriage equality has brought a new era to LGBT rights and shines a light on the wedding industry and the people that lend their talents towards making our nuptial dreams come true. Buddy Valastro (a.k.a. the Cake Boss) is one such ally. Fourth-generation master baker, Buddy Valastro has created an empire from his family’s bakery in Hoboken, N.J.. But it wasn’t until TLC created a show about him and his family that Buddy took on the moniker of Cake Boss. Using Cake Boss as a platform, Buddy and his family have shown their viewpoints on a number of previously taboo topics. I sat down with Buddy in the Green Room just before he was to go onstage and judge a cake competition at Your Wedding Experience with David Tutera. He shared with me his views on same sex marriage, baking a Pride cake for New York City Pride, and how he soothed Carmen Carrera’s feelings when she felt slighted by Cake Boss.

OF CAKE BUDDY VALASTRO

David Atlanta: Thanks so much for taking a moment cake bakers. Try being in the wedding industry and not being to sit down with me. Is this your first time in Atlanta? around gay people! Forgetaboutit! Buddy Valastro: No, actually I was just here last weekend for another convention. I like Atlanta. The people are always warm to me. We went to Fox Brothers for some great barbeque. It’s the southern hospitality that is such a treat.

When I get two gay guys wanting a cake from me, it’s the best. They know exactly what they want. They’ll draw it out for you. They’re creative. It’s just an easy process. You know what’s hard is when my clients are two women. I hate to say it, but for some reason it just is a more difficult process. I DA: There’s a big difference between Northern men- mean fuck! tality and Southern mentality. I’ve been a big advocate for LGBT rights. I actually made a BV: 100%. Wedding cakes kind of helped me to get to where I am today. Since Cake Boss, we’ve transitioned into doing more DA: Who comes up with the ideas and inspirations for crazy cakes. your cakes? BV: Usually me. I think bakers are lucky. Brides come to us after the fact. What I mean by that is that the brides come to us after they have a venue, a theme, their dress picked. By the time they come to me for the cake they already have a lot of information for me to look through and get the key points for building their cake. DA: Is there any difference when making a wedding cake for a same sex couple? BV: I’m actually doing a Pride cake on an upcoming episode of my show. We’re making it for New York Pride. DA: Is it going to be like a rainbow cake? BV: That would be the easiest definition of a Pride cake. I’ll do something different probably. On the show we’re trying to show that family is family, whether your straight or gay; it really doesn’t matter. The reality of it is that Cake Boss really isn’t that much about cakes. It’s about family. Growing up in the wedding industry, I was always around gay and lesbian wedding planners, and florists, and other davidatlanta.com | 29

AFTER

I

n response to our Marriage Equality victory, David Atlanta is very proud to introduce a new wedding section in the magazine. Our goal is to present editorial content and advertisements geared toward helping our readers be prepared for their “big day”. While not all of our readership is looking towards tying the knot, we are very excited to now be able to offer guidance and points of view for same-sex nuptials. We are delighted to welcome wedding planner, Christopher Confero as a weekly columnist in our wedding section. Each week he will share tips & tricks for wedding success. Chris will explain the best ways to pick you ceremony and reception location, how to establish your style into the event, and the best ways to book a DJ or entertainer. There’s a lot that goes into making your special day even more spectacular, and Chris can help point you in the right direction. Also new in this section is a column by Atlanta jeweler Jonathan Shapiro. He’s going to answer any and all your questions about engagements, weddings, and of course jewelry. If you want to know about engagement ring styles and trends, he’s your guy. But he’s not going to stop there; he’ll answer most any question you pose him from a jeweler’s point of view. As we explore this wonderful and new landscape of marriage equality together, we look forward to the many ways in which we can show our freedom to marry.

WEDDING SECTION

do mine? The proper planning time is around 9 -12 months, but I’ve successfully accomplished beautiful weddings in as little as four months. No, planning a wedding isn’t rocket science, but it’s a tedious & detailed journey that can sometimes be very stressful. The planning process isn’t the stressful part. If done correctly and in a timely fashion, it should be a completely fun and creative process. The stress comes in when you are joining families, spending tons of money and – if you attempt to do it yourself – working two jobs for almost a year. Two weeks into the process of planning alone, you’ll be ready to make a run to the 24-hour Love Shack in Las Vegas. Find a professional who is credible and that you trust. If you choose to secure a wedding planner, let us do our job. Don’t micromanage because that is when the stress builds. Sit back and enjoy the process – hopefully this is the only time you’ll experience it! What sets me apart from any other planner in Atlanta is my planning truly works in tandem with my design services. Growing up in the arts, my time on stage shaped my approach to designing a wedding, which I view as a complete experience for my clients and their guests. Every piece of the planning puzzle tells a part of your story. From the save-the-dates, to the grand goodbye at the end of the night – every element is carefully crafted to appeal to the emotions of your guests as they are taken on a journey to experience who you are as a couple. I hope you will continue to read along as I share with you my take on LGBT weddings and hopefully I can make your life as little easier if you are planning to undertake such a life changing task. Next week I’ll dive into the first step to the official planning process - location, location, location. It’s the basis of which every other decision will be built upon, and the foundation of your wedding day.

ello Atlanta. I’m Christopher Confero, an event planner and designer – or a glorified wedding planner if you will. I grew up between Birmingham and Atlanta, being shuffled back and forth between a split family. The combination of growing up as I did and working every single day in the wedding industry for the past seven years, really gave me a skewed view of love and marriage. On top of that, after the past seven years of working with brides and grooms to plan something that I haven’t been able to do myself is entirely frustrating. So why would a seemingly jaded wedding planner be writing a column on gay marriage you ask? Simple. Because I want to provide tangible advice for any LGBT couple that is in love and brave enough to say, “I do.” Over the next seven weeks, I’m going to give you copious amounts of advice and take you through my entire planning & design process – and I’m not even going to charge you for it, save your dollars for Lateasha. First things first, I want to open up the discussion of why you shouldn’t try to plan your wedding alone without someone like me. Trust me, you need me - you really need me. I could never sit down at your desk and do your job, so why would you try to 42 | 7.8.15

is essentially a long-term commitment to a partnership. Whatever rules you both choose are your own business, but always remain on the same page. If putting a ring on your finger means he’s all yours (and vice versa), better stand firm now than suffer through a divorce which is costly on every level. You are not crazy to want a monogamous marriage, just crazy to enter into one with someone who doesn’t. Dear Jonathan, I am a 22 year old gay man. I am very traditional and I would love more than anything to have a traditional courtship/marriage with my future husband. How do you suggest I go about this? I don’t know who else to ask. Sincerely, Sleepless in Sandy Springs

ASK JONATHAN WITH JONATHAN SHAPERO

Dear Sleepless: The rulebook is just being written for the LGBT Community. Most of my straight clients have known each other between a year and four years before they come to me for an engagement ring. Usually, the proposal is made and a year to 18 months later is the wedding. All the planning of a large wedding takes time. One day you will meet Mr. Right. Take the time to truly know him. A good marriage is based on compatibility, friendship, mutual respect and common goals. Be yourself and require that in others. Good luck in your search. Dear Jonathan,

when there are two guys (or girls for that matter) who gets the diamond? I wouldn’t move forward without at least a carat. I am a 26 year old man and I dream My boyfriend and I have been dating for a year and of an engagement ring on my finger. What are the want to take the next step… but I’m not sure if it’s new rules? Help us out. marriage. Is there such a thing as engagement rings for men? Or what else would you suggest? Sincerely, Anxious in Ansley Dear Jonathan,

Andy in Atlanta Dear Andy: Although we can marry now, that doesn’t mean everyone should immediately walk down the aisle. The first traditional move is engagement. I would suggest engagement ring(s). I am designing the men’s version which could be worn alone or with a second band when its time. Diamonds in wider, more masculine settings are wonderful. Enjoy the process and take your time. Dear Jonathan, My boyfriend keeps talking marriage although he wants to maintain an open relationship. What are your thoughts on this? Am I crazy to believe if I get married, he needs to be true to me? Confused in Canton Dear Confused, I’m just a jeweler, but I will offer these thoughts. No matter what is proposed, it must be agreed upon by both parties. All gay men aren’t going to magically become monogamous because it’s now legal to marry. Marriage 46 | 7.8.15

Dear Anxious, that seems to be the question on everyone’s mind. From my experience there are two types of gay and lesbian couples. The couple where one is older and wealthier and he/she purchases the engagement ring for the other or both of them. When couples are more aligned in age and income, they both come to me and discuss rings for each other. These scenarios are obviously much different than the straight community and probably the most perplexing right now. If you desire a diamond engagement ring of a carat or more, you better include that in your list of non-negotiables for the men you date. Put it out there and see how he responds. Good luck in your pursuits.

advice

Dear Dom, I’m an aspiring male fashion model. After a shooting some pictures for my portfolio, the photographer asked if I would be in the gay porno movie he is filming. It sounds like fun. I’ve got lots of X-rated movies. Love ‘em. Who doesn’t want to boink for bucks? Do you think this will hurt my modeling career? Porn Is My Pursuit Unless you’ve got a great gimmick, PIMP, like a singing butthole or glow-in-the-dark cum shots, the qualifications for both occupations are identical. “Obviously a body, a face, and an ability to perform,” says Howard Andrew, owner of Fabscout Entertainment, a talent management company for the gay adult industry. The one big difference: perform for male models means walking; in porn it means fucking.

Dear Dom,

Every Single Question... Every Single Answer Dear Dom,

Keeping an appearance in skin flicks a secret is impossible today thanks to the internet. Greater still, modern folks are more willing to accept the idea. Colton Ford and Francois Sagat are just two examples of gay porn stars who’ve acheived mainstream success in music and acting, respectively. Hell, if crusty ol’ Ron Jeremy can swallow his own knob and appear in over 2,000 X-rated movies and then go on to stardom in TV, video games, and Hollywood films, PIMP, you can strut your stuff on the catwalk and rock out with your cock out, too. Dear Dom, My new boyfriend has been pestering me go to church with him. I’m not at all religious and have literally never been in a church. The idea kind of makes me panic, especially the part when people eat those Jesus biscuits. My excuses are wearing thin. How can I avoid judgement day? Sundays I’m Nervous

This is a great week for you. You will receive some bursts of unexpected energy that help you accomplish whatever it is you wish to do. You should enjoy a favorable mood and good relations with others all week. Enjoy yourself and feel free to indulge in things that make you happy.

Things may be moving a bit too quickly this week for you to grab hold of anything. There’s an element of the unexpected entering into the equation. Be prepared. The mood of the week is especially light and perhaps a bit superficial. People may not be entirely reliable.

Enjoy the week, Gemini. Take control of the situation and make the most of whatever comes your way. Do it with a smile. There’s a great deal of funloving, excited energy ready for you to draw upon. Attend a party or two. You’re the epitome of the social butterfly.

Your flexible nature may get you in trouble this week. Personalities may clash when no one is willing to lead. Be aggressive without being manipulative. Keep it light. Don’t try to pin anyone down. Your nature is open and expansive. Give other people the freedom they want.

Things will flow smoothly for you. There’s barely a reason for you to lift a finger. You have the good fortune of enjoying this week with very little effort on your part. Keep in mind that if you decide to get something done, you will be extremely successful and able to accomplish quite a bit.

People aren’t going to want to be quite as intense as you require. Things are light and airy. You may find that no one is in the mood to delve as deeply as you want to go. Use the week to relax and release control for a while. Take deep breaths and long walks. Go for a bike ride or short road trip. 66 | 7.8.15

the armorettes

It may be hard for you to make a decision about anything this week. Things may seem wishy-washy and unclear. Don’t worry about it. There is plenty of air to fuel your fire. Be aware that people may pop up from the past and unexpected events may disrupt the flow throughout the week.

Things probably aren’t going to go exactly as you planned this week. Realize that people may act in erratic, powerful bursts, especially when it comes to emotional issues. Your feelings may be a bit distant, and you may find it hard to get in touch with what’s really going on inside you.

Events will flow quite smoothly. The only thing to be aware of is that your emotions may seem rather erratic and unwieldy. There’s a great deal of power behind your words and people are sure to listen. They would be smart to do so. What you have to say will be right on target.

You may be indecisive this week. You may not be able to find solutions you can live with. You don’t need to finalize anything now. Use this week to lay low and gather data. People may seem rather insensitive and erratic. Go with the flow. You have a great deal of warmth and passion to share.

There is plenty of air to fuel your fire this week. You’re able to get quite a bit done. Multitasking is key to accomplishing what you want to do. An element of the unexpected is likely to add a surprising dimension to the week. You’re able to communicate freely.

You may need to make some slight adjustments in order to get through to people this week. The pace may be a bit faster than you’d like. Remember that people aren’t mind readers. They won’t be sensitive enough to pick up on your subtle messages. If you want to get something across, state it clearly.
