car trips I’ve ever experienced. Like all great things, they tend to build slowly. So no one was more shocked than me, to discover that underneath the vapid and cliquish demeanor that many of us project in group socialization, were truly intelligent and fascinating men. And trust me, nothing can be better for my interview skills, than an audience that can’t escape me. As casual conversations, and excitable gossip, began culminating into more shrewd talking points, I began asking more thought provoking questions to the group. Questions like, “Who was the ‘one’ that got away? And why do you think that?” and “If there was something about you physically that you would change, what would it be? And, why?” filled the car with some of the most thoughtful and honest answers, that we in the community, tend to miss out on with one another. I mean, really think about it. How often do you have truly deep, and meaningful conversations with your friends? We live in a world of instant social media, and quick flashes of news, and we tend to treat our friends the same way. We never put our phones down, and we’re always eyeballing the next group of guys that walk past. Instant entertainment always. But, I digress. Having long honest talks with people about your past, and the various goals you seek for your future, really do help connect each of us. No one person is every truly alone, and left to suffer. Each in our community has all suffered different variations of the same trials and tribulations. My friendships deepened on that 4th of July road trip to DC, and I loved sharing the I’m obsessed with traveling! It’s the one thing I fantasize about, stories of what made each of us the strong person we are today. when playing my lottery tickets. While everyone else dreams of expensive cars, and large houses; I just want to see foreign We know that all have our demons, and we all have our own lands, and eat their amazing cuisine! I don’t need any of that insecurities. None of us are perfect, and not one of us ever will material crap, I just want the memories of all the things I can be. Road Trip for the Soul

Now, one of the great things about traveling, is sometimes a good old-fashioned road trip rears its head. Of course, I prefer to jump on a plane, but recently my softball team decided that we were going to go to Washington DC for an end-of-season tournament; but admittedly, taking a car makes for better hauling of softball equipment needed. As the story goes...there may, or may not, have been a player on my team that really doesn’t like flying; and I may, or may not, have been a few cocktails into my night, when I thought it a novel idea to just “Road Trip” together. The next day, and upon sober realization, I decided to make the best of it...and recruit more homos for the 11-hour sojourn to our Nation’s Capital! What better way to spend the 4th of July, but inside a Toyota 4-Runner filled to the brim with drag queens and homos; all while hauling ass through the wilds of the Carolinas and Virginia?! With thoughts of rural horror films dancing in my head, we all headed out on what would become, one of the most amazing 20 | 7.22.15

A Garden Party That Gives Back

Backpack in the Park

S

tarting the school year with a new backpack and school supplies is something that most of us didn’t have to worry about. Maybe you haven’t even thought about what it might be like to begin class without the tools to succeed. However this is a very real situation for thousands of Atlanta children each year because they come from varying degrees of financially struggling families and home situations. Everyone knows that having the right tools makes any job possible. To help out the children of financially struggling families, For the Kid in All of Us is presenting their 10th annual Backpack in the Park, a community garden party and back-to-school benefit on Sunday, July 26. Each year, thousands of Atlanta children receive a new backpack from For the Kid in All of Us. The backpacks are stuffed with school supplies to help them get a great start to their scholastic year. For these children, starting the school year with out these necessary supplies would be potentially disastrous.

Guests can also purchase tickets/virtual backpacks at the door for $40.

ou have certainly noticed that long-time retailer, Brushstrokes has not only moved locations, but has changed its name and branding to GCB. GCB stands for Gifts, Cards, and Boutique…and that’s exactly what they deliver. If you have a need for most any sort of unique gift item or cards, it’s very likely that they have it. “The focus of the store now is more on boutique items, like men’s grooming products and accessories,” states owner, Mark Jackson. “It’s been refocused to something that is more of what I’ve been trying to do for years.” Mark Jackson opened the first Brushstrokes in 1989 in a 400 square foot storefront in the Alley at Virginia Highland. Very quickly, he outgrew the space, and moved Brushstrokes to the current Ansley location. The reason for the move down the strip mall to the new location is simple. Pets Are People Too needed to expand, so Brushstrokes agreed to relocate to take over the empty space at the end of the strip. JN: If you weren’t already aware, AID Atlanta has been undergoing some changes with both personnel and reorganization. These changes made it difficult for them to consider the incredible commitment to Cotillion 2015. Once we realized that Cotillion might not happen this year, we just knew something had to be done. Atlanta Cotillion has been a long standing tradition in the city for 13 years. We’ve been great supporters of the event and the great cause it supports—and this gave us an opportunity to pool our resources and keep it going for another year. DA: Ok, so this is a themed night out on the town! Divas, movie stars…can you tell us more about it?

Atlanta Cotillion

JN: In order to make the evening more exciting, we really wanted to bring something new to the event that would make this year unique and keep everyone excited about supporting Cotillion. So everyone is encouraged to channel their inner diva and bring their favorite movie moments to life. Cinema attire is what we’re shooting for: screen legends, memorable costumes and modern celebrities will all be mingling together. We’d love to see lots of Joan Crawfords and Rock Hudsons—so use your imagination! DA: How can tickets be purchased, and what can ticket holders expect?

DA: What’s your goal in making this happen?

JN: Tickets are two-fold. Not only can attendees expect amazing food, drinks, dancing and entertainment, but each ticket is an entry into the Red Carpet Raffle that will be drawn during the event. We’ll be giving away cash prizes throughout the night totaling $20,000, and a grand prize of $10,000 going to the last ticket drawn. This isn’t just a stuffy fundraiser—it’s going to be a lot of fun and we hope the raffle will help us sell more tickets to benefit AID Atlanta. This is a night to celebrate! Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.092615.com.

JN: The idea is rather simple: To host one big party, one night only, and keeping the tradition alive while AID Atlanta works to David Atlanta: Can you tell us a little complete their agency transitions, conabout how you’re making the event tinuing to provide care and even more happen this year? to our community. That’s how the 2015 Y’allywood Diva Ball was born! Team LemonAIDS, Atlanta’s largest walk team that’s raised over $72,000 for AID Atlanta, will be out in full force selling tickets to this spectacular event! recently had the opportunity to catch up with James Nelson, the owner and driving force behind TEN Atlanta, to find out more about this year’s collaboration between AID Atlanta and Toast of the Town—which, in honor of the Atlanta Cotillion, has become the 2015 Y’allywood Ball! This year they’re taking the Cotillion to the Red Carpet, giving attendees the chance to unleash their inner diva and relive their favorite movie moments on September 26th!

id you miss Gay Days in Orlando? Well you have another superb opportunity to party in a theme park and show your pride (and your sexy swimwear) this summer. Hurricane Harbor is Six Flags newest waterpark attraction. Imagine having it all to ourselves for an evening Saturday, July 25.

Enjoy all the rides and attractions that Six Flags has to offer throughout the day. Scream your head off on rides such as the famous Georgia Cyclone, or try your hand at Batman: The Ride. This 50 mile-per-hour juggernaut takes you through Gotham as only Batman can see it. But really, it’s all about showing the world our LGBT unity. It’s a great time for everyone involved. Once you’re done for the day, head over to Hurricane Harbor and strip down to your swimsuits for an evening of water slides, music and entertainment. At 6:30 p.m. the waterpark will close to the public and open to an exclusive LGBT event: Out in the Harbor.

e’ve all seen a drag pageant at some point in our lives. The talents of female impersonators are on full display as well as their sickening pageant fashions. But what if there was a pageant system that was open to a broader spectrum of contestants? That’s exactly what the Pride of America pageant system is doing. POA is open to individuals that identify themselves as gay, lesbian, bi, transgender, queer, or even a straight ally to our community. POA’s mission is to bring the ENTIRE community together through entertainment and show Pride by working with charities and social services that truly make a difference throughout our country. So, unlike other pageant systems where divisions are determined by current body status, age and/or weight, their only competition requirements are that you are at least 21 years of age.

In Georgia, Miss Porsha Daniels has been selected to represent our state on the national level. drill designers, choreographers, and instructors, along with bus & truck drivers. Clearly, this is not a cheap enterprise. Toplevel drum corps will have a yearly budget reaching into the millions of dollars. Amongst the miles, meals, and marching are seemingly endless hours of practice and rehearsal. The schedule is daunting, if not crippling. Sacrifices are many. But, the personal payoff is powerful. “The first time I saw a DCI show my only thought was, ‘How amazing must it be to be part of something so special that can make an audience feel so many emotions?’,” recalls Susana Rivas, a 20-year old baritone horn player from Chatsworth, GA. “From that moment on I had decided that I wanted to be a part of something like that.”

abulous. Flashy. Fierce. Loud as hell. That’s not a critique of the newest drag queen on RuPaul’s TV show. During this weekend, it’s just a few words trying to describe the biggest and brassiest show to tour through Atlanta this year. Totalling over two-thousand performers, the Drum Corps International Southeastern Regional Championships will fill the Georgia Dome with unparalleled precision and pageantry. Put aside any images of some mere football game halftime show. Drum Corps International is called the Major League of Marching Music for very good reason. The contest on Saturday, July 25 will gather 30 elite drum & bugle corps from all over the nation to present their rigorously rehearsed programs, including the Blue Devils (CA), Troopers (WY), Phantom Regiment (IL), Boston Crusaders (MA), and Carolina Crown (SC). Also, both of the country’s only all-male corps, Madison Scouts (WI) and Cavaliers (IL), will take the field in spellbinding synchrony. Each corps is comprised of up to 150 members, each no more than 21-years old. The group is divided into three parts: horns (sopranos, baritones, contras, etc),

Nathan Gregory and Jacqie Rotch, both aged 21 and in their final “age-out” year with Spirit of Atlanta, have developed a kinship and sense of true belonging in the corps. “The members and staff here are so much more than a drum corps,” says Gregory, the Horn Sergeant hailing from Gallatin, TN. “We are a family and I wouldn’t give them up for the world.”

At the heart of drum & bugle corps is music. The Blue Devils specialize in jazz, while Phantom Regiment is devoted to classical works. Very few bands and singers are selling out venues these days. The legendary B-52s know what it takes to get a party going and to keep it going for decades. Almost 40 years ago, this small group of friends got together in Athens, Georgia after having drinks at a Chinese restaurant. WEDDING SECTION

Finding the right creative professionals is just like shopping. You’re looking for people that speak to your style. You don’t go to Tom Ford when you’re more of a Ralph Lauren household. Great designers can do whatever is asked of him or her, but the work shines when working in his or her niche style. When you get to the point of meeting with people face-toface, they should have a way of finding out exactly what makes you tick so be completely honest with them. Don’t tell them you like something just to be agreeable. Also, be mindful of noticing specifically what you like about different inspirations you have and vocalizing it. Just because you like the color of a drag queen’s dress, doesn’t mean you thought the bitch was any good. Share as much as you can with your designers, but then leave it in their hands to do their job and create something beautiful. And for the love of all that is holy, don’t pull a picture of Pinterest and ask for a replica. You should want something crafted uniquely for you. Atlanta is a treasure trove of wedding industry talent. Assembling the perfect creative team is a symphony when you get it right, but can be hellish without the right person at the helm. Just remember that help is only a phone call away. Next week is going to be all T, all shade – fashion. Leave your sense of style at the door because I am going to be stepping on toes in size 12 Louboutins.

Plays Well with Others How to pick the right creative team

Last week was all about location. With the perfect setting secured, we can begin to delve into the creative team that will bring your dreams to life. These are the people that will be responsible for the design of florals, stationery, cake, linens, and on and on. First things first, I know you may have a sweet aunt that loves doing flowers at home or a good friend that has taken up cake baking as a hobby, but that does not mean they need to be working on your wedding day. Let them enjoy the experience of being your guest and leave the work to the professionals. Along that same line, make sure to do your homework on those that do consider themselves professionals. It takes no time or skill to throw up a website and social media pages. And if you’re still cruising Craigslist, that is not the time nor place to see if you can snag a good deal on a photographer honey. Look for a body of work that shows full events from beginning to end and not just a few highlights. You’re looking for someone that consistently gets it right. Everyone gets his or her start somewhere, but remember you get what you pay for. Years ago, even I was a Basement Betty myself hocking my wares out of a friend’s garage to get where I am today. But the level of work I present has always spoken for itself. 38 | 7.22.15

Dear Ivory, you’re not the first. I have created rings for bi-racial couples before. There are many possibilities depending upon your budget. White metals and Black metals. White and Black diamonds. Carbon fiber rings. The possibilities are endless. I like stacking eternity bands of black and white diamonds, or a wide band with one larger stone. You could wear the black diamond and he could wear the white. There are white metal rings with black enamel as well. Prices range from $200 to $20,000. Be creative and celebrate the possibilities. Dear Jonathan, I started wearing a ring on my left hand years ago. I feel like now it’s suggesting something else and may be keeping me from getting a serious BF. Am I sending the wrong message? Mixed Up in Midtown

ASK JONATHAN WITH JONATHAN SHAPERO

Dear Mixed, Wearing a ring on your wedding finger definitely says “married” although I think you probably knew that already. Years ago, men would wear a band so people would assume they were straight. Have times changed? Now gay men need to reserve their left hand for the guy they want to marry… just like the girls do (or wear a ring to attract those shady men that just want an affair with a married man.) Seriously, leave that left ring finger empty so as not to lose any prospects. Marriage Equality has changed things forever. Dear Jonathan,

Dear Dude, what if your future husband wants that church wedding? You better be ready for a walk down the aisle if you love him. Or, put what you want out there from the very beginning and wait for a guy that feels the same way. I love the idea of tradition. Just make sure your wedding includes family and friends and a world of memories. It is a special day that will never be forgotten. Include the many possibilities that our straight brothers and sisters have had along with new possibilities that seem perfect for two guys. Create your own traditions.

Dear Individual, as you may surmise… there are no rules. I’ve provided both different and matching rings for guys. I will say that the bigger problem may be your inability to compromise. So let me suggest a few possibilities: same ring, different colors. I am just creating a set for clients, one in platinum…the other in rose gold. If you both choose the same color, perhaps a different colored stone in each, or a diamond in one. If you do select completely different rings, select the same engraving inside. advice

Dear Dom, Weed rules. I’ve been smoking pot since high school. It relaxes me. My new boyfriend doesn’t smoke. My folks have been after me to stop for years. They all say I’m addicted. I say that’s bullshit. They really piss me off. My weed habit has never caused any problems. It’s safe. And nothing’s better than firing up a fatty after a long, hard day. In reality, what do you think, Dom? Boy Likes Unlimited Nighttime Toking Some people say that reality is an illusion caused by a lack of good weed, BLUNT. Well, let’s clear the smoke and look at your reality. First, you probably really are addicted. Second, marijuana is causing real problems for you.

Dear Dom,

Every Single Question... Every Single Answer Dear Dom,

Addiction means more than a dependence just on drugs. It can involve things and activities, too. For example, anorexia, bulimia, hoarding, sex, porn, and gambling are some of many activities that can become troublesome addictions. People can get hooked on substances like heroin, cocaine, paint thinner, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine – and yes, marijuana. While pot’s addictive properties are relatively low, the involved actions serve to reinforce its impact. Gathering paraphernalia, rolling the joint, lighting it, passing it around become rituals that provide comfortable familiarity. Do you hear a bell, Pavlov? The difference between a habit and an addiction is choice. The best way to determine if your marijuana use is simply habitual is to stop for a while. Take a break for a week or two. If you successfully choose to stop, you’ve got control over pot, instead of vice a versa. Better still, after some time off your buzz will get a boost. How is weed causing you trouble, BLUNT? The fact that your friends and family are urging you to quit creates tension and isolation. There’s also the legal ramifications. In Georgia, buying marijuana is still a criminal activity. And you don’t have to be smoking it to be arrested for DUI. But here’s a tip. Always take your driver’s license picture stoned. When you get pulled over, the cop will think you always look like that.

Waiting tables in a gay restaurant is a great job. The tips are good. The customers are sexy & friendly. Plus, I get to eat for cheap. After two years, I’m being considered for a promotion to headwaiter. Trouble is, this cute, new straight boy is flirting with the owner to get the job instead. I wanna put a knife in his back. What Dear Dom, should I do? Is there really such a thing as an anal orgasm? Workers And Rivals Pounding On Prostate Try not to stab the dude, WAR. But if you do, remember: Employees must wash hands before returning to work. Competing for anything, especially a job, can get blood boiling. The stress you’re imposing on yourself is likely causing you to project some hostility towards your coworker. When that happens, everything he does can become warped and exaggerated. In fact, he might not want that management position at all. The rewards of good work will come with time. Stay on target. Try to keep the peace, WAR. 64 | 7.22.15

Your sharp intuition and imagination could bring enlightening spiritual insights. Metaphysical or religious books could be especially appealing. Relations with close friends and family should benefit from this enhanced sensitivity. You may be able to understand them better because of it.

Some intense dreams about someone you haven’t seen for a long time could have you wondering what this person is doing now. It might also awaken the desire to be in contact again. Call if you can. You might be pleasantly surprised. Communication of all kinds should go well today.

Social events or group activities concerned primarily with spiritual, metaphysical, social, or humanitarian issues could take place in your community this week. These could be enlightening and enjoyable, and you could make some new friends. The exchange of ideas could get your mind going a thousand miles an hour.

Legal papers might need attention. This could concern a positive development in financial matters. Though you might not be too clear on the language, you will still be glad to do it since it could represent a highly desirable turn of events for you. New selfconfidence could result.

A new romance or friendship could develop with someone who’s very creative and shares your spiritual values. This is a very positive development, Leo. Just avoid idealizing your new friend. This person is human like everyone else, and needs to be loved as is. Don’t create an unrealistic impression of the person.

You could have heightened psychic awareness this week. You will probably notice it first when you pick up thoughts and feelings of family members, perhaps coming up with the same words at the same time. You may notice this phenomenon more throughout the week. Make the most of this ability. 66 | 7.22.15

Someone who lives near you who may not have said much to you before could suddenly strike up a conversation that results in a new friendship. You could be wondering why you didn’t speak to him or her before. Don’t push too hard, and don’t idealize your new friend.

Some paperwork might need execution very soon. This may be tedious, but it’s apt to open new doors for you and pave the way to more success and good fortune. Writing or speaking might be involved in some way, and modern technology plays a definite part in what you will be doing.

Strong intuitive rapport with someone who lives far away could create a desire to contact this person. This is a good idea, Sagittarius, as this person may be going through a positive transition in life and eager to share the news. This communication could bring you closer together, so go for it.

Your intuition could bring you an interesting opportunity to increase your income in an unconventional way. Others may think the idea strange, but for you it’s definitely worth considering. Check all the pros and cons, talk to people in the know, and then give it some serious thought.

Social events could put you in touch with interesting people involved in intriguing fields like astrology, alchemy, and other occult sciences, or perhaps in social, political, or humanitarian causes. There could be a possible new love interest. You’re going to enjoy these people.

More pleasant conditions that are a lot easier to deal with could lull you into a new sense of security in your relationships. Personal and professional interactions should be especially warm and supportive. This should last for a while, Pisces, but then the situation will probably revert to whatever it was before.

Bitch

S E S S I O N

SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH, tweet @BitchSessionATL or email bitch@davidatlanta.com *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)

Our Apologies In the V18-I28 issue dated July 15, David Atlanta published a reader-submitted “bitch” in poor taste. Essentially, the submission called into question the contributions of two of our amazing community partners, AIDS Walk Atlanta and Rick Twombley Fitness. The Bitch Session column is meant to be a comical forum for rants and raves from readers, not an opportunity to bully specific people, places, or events. We work diligently each week to ensure no proper names or businesses are referenced, but this one was missed, and resulted in a major error on the part of the editorial staff of David Atlanta. We apologize for this error and have taken measures to ensure this does not happen again.

Yes Hunni, a hot 30-something can be a Twink!

We have so much in common. You want to travel. I want you to go.

The important work that AIDS Walk does for our community should not be taken lightly. They work tirelessly throughout the year to raise much needed funds for our community’s most essential services. Rick Twombley has personally donated his time and resources as the Official AIDS Walk Trainer so that EVERYONE has the encouragement to walk and be part of this momentous cause.
