David Hero:

Mary Norwood

A

s a representative for the entire city of Atlanta on the Atlanta City Council Citywide Post 2, Mary Norwood has long been a proponent for LGBT equality. She has spoken out for all of us on numerous occasions as an activist. Mary Norwood has been involved with the City of Atlanta for the past 30 years, beginning as a community activist. In 2009, Mary ran a very close race for Mayor of the City of Atlanta and may decide to run again in the future. How long have you lived in Atlanta? I arrived in Atlanta in the fall of 1972 to attend Emory University for my last two years of college. I had attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia from 1970-72. I have been in Atlanta ever since. What do you do for employment? I represent the entire City of Atlanta on Atlanta City Council: Citywide Post 2. Since college, I spent 17 years in radio broadcasting (1974-1991) and 17 years running a broadcast voice message company (robocalls) (1992-2009) What charities are you involved in right now? Since my graduation from college, I have volunteered for 45 organizations in over 130 different capacities. They 20 | 7.29.15

run the gamut from being the Volunteer Coordinator for the Women›s PreRelease Center (1977-80) to Co-Chairing the Atlanta Opera Ball (1995) and the Southeastern Flower Show (2011) with my husband Dr. Felton Norwood, to being one of the founders of the Atlanta Botanical Garden Associates (1987) to hiring Homeless and Underemployed Men & Women to keep our City›s streets clean (1996-97), to currently being involved with The Shepherd Center as a member of their Legendary Party committee. How did you get started on your philanthropic path? I grew up in Augusta, Georgia, where my family has a long history of civic engagement and concern for the community. My parents founded Historic Augusta in 1965 and my father started the first Soup Kitchen in the 1970›s. I joined the Junior League of Atlanta when I first moved to Atlanta and I have been involved ever since. I began my political involvement when I was the President of my neighborhood association: Tuxedo Park Civic Association, and spent a year building support for our neighborhood to become a Historic District. After a year of work, I lost by one vote at City Council. That loss propelled me into becoming involved in communities all over our city, which I have done ever since.

What would you like to see in the future for your charities? I want to see every community in Atlanta thrive. We simply must keep our City SAFE and CLEAN in order to do so. How can David readers help you achieve those goals? The LGBT community adds such vitality and energy to our City. I have always appreciated the urban pioneers (many of whom are LGBT) who have populated our fragile neighborhoods and contribute so much to our City EVERY day! I would love to see David share stories about neighborhoods throughout our city and encourage other members of the LGBT community to come join us in Atlanta. Dogs or cats? Goldfish Favorite TV Binge? British Sitcoms Favorite restaurant in Atlanta? Colonnade Favorite song right now? I was in the radio business; we learned not to have favorite songs, because we always had to “Play the hits” or the listeners would tune our station out. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? My philosophy is “If you don’t do what you don’t do well, then you have more time to do the things that you CAN do well.”

Watch each month as David Atlanta Magazine unveils a new hero. These community members have shown Atlanta what they do to enhance the city in which we live. If you have a suggestion for a recipient of the David Hero Award please email jonathan@davidatlanta.com.

DJ/Producer

Oren Nizri From Tel Aviv to Miami to Atlanta by Jonathan Bugg

T

el Aviv DJ/Producers have had superior dance club success on a worldwide scale. Out magazine called Tel Aviv “the gay capital of the Middle East,” and it’s been ranked as a global party town up there with both Ibiza and Miami. International DJ/Producer Oren Nizri moved from Tel Aviv to Miami in 2003. His masterful blend of soulful vocals and funky European house was a perfect match for the direction of South Florida’s music scene. Even though Oren is based in Miami, not a month goes by without jetting off to some exotic hot spot. If his increasingly expanding schedule says anything about Oren, it’s that he’s not slowing down any time soon.

and listen to other house DJs whenever I’m in town. Living in Miami, we are constantly exposed to some of the best talent in the world on a weekly basis, which is awesome.

Oren Nizri: I got my start as a DJ in a radio station called the Voice of Tel Aviv with a show called In My House in 2001. I had a bi-weekly show that was dedicated to house music before it became a mainstream. From there I started playing in clubs and big events, moving to Europe, and then eventually settling in the USA.

Of course you try to adapt yourself to the venue and the crowd, but that’s what makes the job so exciting! Every night, every club, every crowd…they will never be same

DA: You have been in the business for a long time. How has your “sound” evolved over the years? ON: My sound varied since I started. I never used to play only one genre of house. I can definitely say that my sound has updated itself and evolved along with the club scene.

DA: So how would you describe your music now? I caught up with Oren as he was leaving the South American ON: I play anything from funky vocal big room to progressive leg of his latest tour: house, mostly European house since I play for both markets. I David Atlanta: Tell me how you got your start in Israel. always try to find a line of tracks that will appeal to both.

DA: When was the last time you spun in Atlanta?

ON: I was in Atlanta a year and a half ago, and I’m always glad to DA: After 10+ years in Miami, are you still enjoying the be back. I have always gotten amazing response in Atlanta. Over the years I have made some loyal fans in this city. Jungle is a great club/music scene there? club, and has been very good to me and it’s one of my favorite ON: The scene has changed a lot, and not always in a good places to spin in the US. way, but it is part of the work and the business. I always try to 22 | 7.29.15

DA: In your off time, what do you like to do? ON: I like to relax hang out with friends and watch a lot of cartoons. I feel silly for admitting this, but I’m a huge fan of SpongeBob SquarePants, The Simpsons, and Family Guy. DA: Anyone special in your life? You had a boyfriend I think last time we talked. ON: (laughs) For the time being, I am in a full time relationship with my career. DA: What do you most look forward to when working up a crowd? ON: The moment you realize the crowd gets what you’re doing, and will go with you all the way to the end. It’s a pure joy, and a remarkable feeling making people happy on the floor. It makes them forget about everything, even if it’s only for a few hours. I look forward to coming back to Atlanta. I have nothing but great memories every time I spin in your city... see you on the dance floor and bring all your energy for another amazing time! DJ/Producer Oren Nizri will be spinning at Jungle (2115 Faulkner Rd. NE) on Saturday, August 1. For more details go to jungleatl.com DA: What do you plan to bring to the boys of Atlanta this weekend? ON: I plan an uplifting set as always. Atlanta loves music that’s full of vocals and that has great energy. Hopefully, you will never wanna leave the floor. DA: Where do you find your musical inspiration? Do you have favorite producers and DJs? ON: I grew up on classic house music and that’s is my true love. All the DJs that were responsible for house music exploded in the mid 90s like David Morales, the great Frankie Knuckles, Danny Tenaglia, Roger Sanchez, Masters at Work. I mean the list can go on and on. These are some of the names who have inspired me the most in my career. I also follow DJs such as Avicii, Thomas Gold, My Digital Enemy just to name a few. DA: You’ve traveled all over the world, what are some of your favorite places to work? ON: With no doubt South America is incredible. Brazil has an insane club scene where it’s part of the culture and they live for clubbing. I always have a fantastic time there on my tours. Europe is one of the best places to play in terms of freedom they know their house music so well they will go with you from beginning to end. As a matter of fact, I will be back to Europe during September and October. In the USA, San Francisco, Atlanta, Seattle and Miami are few of my favorites. 24 | 7.29.15

MIKA No Place In Heaven by DJ Marc J Cubs

M

IKA is back again with another round of whimsical, story telling in his latest album No Place In Heaven. The fourth studio album by the colorful Brit is probably his most open and revealing album to date. From the album’s opening track (and first single) “Last Party” to the album’s finale “Good Guys, Night Time Mix”, the theme throughout the entire album is a bittersweet joy that’ll make you get the feels. MIKA has a style and way about his music that will take you all over the place… which can be a good thing but only if it is in small doses. One track might make you feel like you’re at Woodstock, while other tracks might have you feel that you are in an underground, disco club. Disappointing to many original MIKA fans, the majority of the album’s songs feel a bit Debby Downer. However, if MIKA’s goal was to make an album that is a bit less Glam-Pop and more lyric driven then he definitely succeeded. Not that he ever was shy or hid the fact that he was gay, this album is definitely MIKA’s most revealing out of all his 26 | 7.29.15

previous albums. It’s more mature. The album is laced with tracks yearning for love (“Good Wife”), finding it (“Talk About You”), partying (“Last Party”), acceptance (“All She Wants”), and the struggles of it all especially with being gay. Probably the most discussed song off the album is “Good Guys” which is an open ended question highlighting the lack of gay, male role models around today. I personally don’t get it. With a slew of amazingly talented artists, athletes, and entrepreneurs out there today, any young gay boy can have someone to look up to and be inspired by. Neil Patrick Harris, Ricky Martin, Lee Daniels, Stephen Fry, Ian McKellen, Tom Ford, Anderson Cooper, George Takei, Jason Collins, Gareth Thomas, Bryan Singer, and so many more have all proven that you can be gay AND be successful at what you do. MIKA is included in that list as well! I suppose that there can be more “good guys” out there and maybe that is what MIKA is asking in the song. Out of all of the songs on the album, “Good Guys” is probably the most beautifully written track and definitely the one you’ll play over and over.

On another note, some of the songs on No Place In Heaven do sound very similar to some of MIKA’s past songs. “Oh Girl You’re The Devil” (even though it is probably the most fun song on the album) sounds like his “Popular Song”. Also, the chorus to the album’s title track “No Place In Heaven” sounds extremely similar to The Supremes’ “You Cant Hurry Love”. Another standout track off of the album is the bonus track “Promiseland” which does sound a bit like a knockoff Maroon 5 song but it’s sooooo good! All in all, No Place In Heaven is a definitely a great album – a tad melancholy but great nonetheless! It’s not as colorful as his past albums but, then again, MIKA is evolving as an artist so it is refreshing to see him try something new and succeed at it. Even though the album doesn’t have that standout runaway hit like “Grace Kelly” or “Love Today”, you’re guaranteed to enjoy this album just as much as you did his first three. Standout Tracks: “Promiseland”, “Staring At the Sun”, and “Rio”

WEDDING SECTION

Don’t match. Ladies, don’t get two ballgowns, which make you discernible from the wedding cake. You want two distinct styles that represent your individual fashion sense, but pair well together visually. If it’s going to be two gowns, a sleeker look is the way to go. If one of you opts for a fantastic pantsuit, then there is more room for imagination with the other’s dress. Fellas, this isn’t high school prom. Do not show up with matching color vests and ties. You should be complementary, not twinsies. Do complement. While colors and styles shouldn’t be exactly the same, they should be in the same family. This is a formal announcement to the world that you two are becoming one, so this isn’t the time to be the peacock of the relationship. If one of you is a touch flashier, express that through a statement piece such as shoes or a lapel pin. If you simply won’t leave the sequin blazer out of the equation, save it for the reception and have a subtle option for the ceremony.

photo: Chuck St. John

Dress to Say I Do

Look A Mess If You Don’t In my book, event design does not end with the way a room looks. The final finesse is a perfectly polished set of hosts or hostesses. Ensuring my clients’ attire selections align with the overall vision of the wedding is part of what takes my services to the next level. When you consider that what you wear for the big day is one of the most important outfits you’ll ever don, you want to make sure special consideration is made to put your best foot forward. Let’s take a look at some good rules of thumb to make sure you look your best.

Don’t wait. A tradition in heterosexual weddings is waiting to see each other until the walk down the aisle. This actually becomes a nasty wrench in the grand scheme of the day’s schedule. All the family photos that you will want to have will have to be taken after the ceremony…and are extremely tedious. You will have a limited amount of time for photos together because you don’t want to keep your guests waiting. It can also add extra stress trying to avoid each other from being seen. Do look. If you do insist on not seeing each other until you’re both ready, do a first look before the ceremony. It is an intimate moment that can help relieve the time constraints of the day. Even better, you should get ready together. Helping each other dress and enjoying each other’s company will relive those nerves and ensure you make sure your partner doesn’t mix-match those socks like you know they always do. Have your photographer there to capture those moments. You will thank me later. That wasn’t too bad right? Those are general guidelines to help you make decisions, but ultimately it is in your hands to know what looks best on you. And just a few final words for the road: Tuxes only after six, tails are never appropriate, less is always more, boutonnieres only belong on jacket lapels, and “No white after Labor Day,” is dead.

Don’t rent. A rental suit or tux is inexcusable. Every gentleman should have at least one well-tailored suit and tuxedo in their Stay Knotty, wardrobe. Do you want to start the rest of your life with some- Christopher one wearing what one of your shitty exes may have worn to another event, or prom even? Do invest. If you don’t already have a custom suit or tuxedo, then there is no better time to enjoy the process of having a garment tailored to fit your body perfectly. Get all the finishes that express your style and this piece will be at your fingertips for future celebrations. 38 | 7.29.15

advice

big nights out were a trip into town for burgers and a scoop at Sue’s Ice Cream Parlor and then a movie over at the Swan Drive-In. Today, I work in a factory and my boss is retiring. Everybody’s going to his farewell dinner at a swanky restaurant. Help! I don’t want to embarass myself in front of my coworkers. Manners Are Needed You don’t need a diploma from charm school to prove you’re not living in a cave, MAN. Just remember those simple dinnertime tips your mama taught you. Sit up straight. Napkin in your lap. Elbows off the table. Don’t talk with your mouth full. However, the most important--and most overlooked--rule for modern day diners is to put your damned cell phone away. “It’s common sense really,” says William Hanson, author of The Bluffer’s Guide to Etiquette. “If you’ve been invited to a nice dinner with nice guests what can be more important on Facebook or Twitter?” Not to mention Grindr, Manhunt, or Adam4Adam.

Dear Dom,

Every Single Question... Every Single Answer Dear Dom, I’m banging this blazing hot man from my office. He’s super kinky and I just can’t get enough of his huge slab of meat. I want to be boyfriends. He wants to keep it on the down-low and just be discreet fuck-buddies. Things are getting weird. What am I gonna do?

Hanson sees people breaking this most basic provision of politeness all the time. “People are so thick. It’s not rocket science. If you don’t get it, there’s something wrong with you,” he says. If you’re likely to be tempted to dial or date on your device during dinner, turn that thing off and leave it in your truck. If you still don’t get it, well, yabba dabba doo. Maybe you really are a hopeless Neanderthal, MAN. Dear Dom, I hate beards! This facial hair fad is making me insane. The lumber-sexuals at the bars with their scruffy beards all look like they’re on a weekend pass from a logging camp. Gross! Tell me, will men ever start shaving again? Can’t Understand Timbermen Razors are about to make a comeback, CUT. Beards are perfect for some guys; namely Gandalf, Santa Claus, Osama bin Laden, and any of those wackos from Duck Dynasty. For the rest, facial hair is mostly just a fashionable affectation.

Workers Having Awkward Moments

Hirsuteness may soon be history. “The big beard trend peaked this winter,” claims local barber Tom Glatt. “Now, we’re seeing You idiot! You had a great thing going. Now, WHAM, it’s all an more and more men coming in for a shave each week.” uncomfortable mess. You broke one of Ol’ Dom’s cardinal rules: As for me, I can’t wait for the gay beard movement to quit. Every Never fuck the help! time I sit down, I end up with a nasty rash. Maybe it’s not too late. If you can get your dick back in your pants and your mind on the job, perhaps you can still have some no-strings-attached fun with your freaky fellow after work. Turn Dom your fire down low and let him control the heat. If you can’t cool Advice columnist Dominic has been there and done that it, you’ll probably wind up looking for a new job. My advice: start with most everything. He gives a new low to all levels of polishing your resumé. depravity. He’s heard every question and every answer. Give him a try, email DearDom@davidatlanta.com. Dear Dom, I’m disgusting. My friends think I eat like Fred Flintstone. What can I say? I come from a very rural family. Our 64 | 7.29.15

Trying to get too much work done in the course of the week could prove self-defeating. Your energy isn’t what it usually is, and you’re probably operating on adrenaline. Consider the situation carefully and list your tasks in order of urgency. Watch a movie and order a pizza.

A despondent friend may need some cheering up. Your ability to nurture and listen sympathetically will definitely prove beneficial. Take care not to absorb any of this person’s dejection. Your life should continue to go well with professional successes leading to new friendships and goals.

Many projects to complete before a deadline might have you feeling pressured, but your determination is likely to drive you to try to get it all done even if it seems impossible. Don’t try to do it all yourself. Ask for a little help. You can accomplish your ends without undue pressure on yourself.

You’ve been doing very well, but this week you might feel more focused than ever. The path ahead seems clear and well defined. You’re anticipating the future with motivation. You might be considering a long trip abroad or perhaps going back to school for an advanced degree.

Some kind of settlement, grant, or bonus that you’ve anticipated for a long time may finally show up. This should make your week! You may want to celebrate. A chance to attend a large social gathering might come your way. Have fun! Tonight don’t be surprised if vivid dreams come your way.

This week you may put a lot of energy into your romantic relationship. The astral energy is encouraging you to focus on romance. Give your significant other a special gift to show how much you care, and spend some time alone together. Any romance initiated or advanced now is a good thing. 66 | 7.29.15

Too much work and the resulting pressure over the past few days may have you feeling too tired to do anything more, although your optimism and enthusiasm are still intact. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you’re dragging by the end of the week. You will soon recharge and be your old self again.

Romance blossoms for you, perhaps after a long standstill. A new stability and security may settle on love relationships as well as close friendships. You might want to channel some of this blossoming positive energy into a creative activity of some kind, which should further your sense of contentment and well-being.

You might host a social event in your home soon. You may be nervous at first, wondering if all will go well. Your efforts should produce the results you want. You might be introduced to new contacts, which could lead to increased professional opportunities. Take a walk after everyone has gone.

Paperwork, perhaps contracts or other legal documents, might need attention so you can move ahead with your projects. These projects could involve writing or speaking. Your mind is in just the right space to participate in anything involving communication.

Your financial picture continues to improve. At some point during the week you might have the feeling that you aren’t working hard enough to keep up your current forward motion, and you might worry. This could be a good motivator, but you don’t need to push harder than you are now.

Even though all continues to go well your mood may vacillate this week. In spite of all the great things in your life, at some time during the week you might feel a little blue. Don’t read too much into it. It’s probably just the result of low biorhythms. Try to distract yourself with physical activity.

So, let me get this straight. It’s ok to cheat on your partner if you cross the continental divide?

Don’t sugar coat it by asking me if I’m “generous.” You’re a hooker baby. That’s what you are.

Ok, so you respond almost immediately when the message concerns your self interests, but let the topic sway from YOU and...well, I’m still waiting.

Fake nice is worse than really mean.

If you take a quick glance and all the boys you hang out with are 20 years younger than you, you’re probably creepy.

Atlanta the city that never sleeps with the same person twice.

If we handcuffed him to an elliptical for a week, he’d be bangin!

Plastic surgery can make the exterior glorified, but it can never repair your ugliness on the inside.

I wonder if he’ll ever notice that the first status of his that I liked was a life change ending in “moved from Atlanta”?

I just got back from a mile long walk in your shoes and I still think you’re a douche bag.
