oving those temps as they drop into the 70s and below? This year, the autumn months mean embracing the ‘70s in our wardrobes, too. But you don’t have to go costume to stay on trend. Rocking these runway looks are doable, and we’re here to help. 24 | 9.23.15
With guidance from a few of our favorite men’s fashion queens, we scoured some key Fall/ Winter 2015 shows to identify trends from big-name designers. And don’t worry: You can totally rock these in the real world at realpeople prices.
While a good place to find inspiration, the ‘70s aren’t the only place to take cues and make these looks your own, and high-end shopping isn’t the only way to get them.

Look for the return of faux fur and faux sheep collars on coats and even sweaters. Wear it with a tshirt a la Steve McQueen, or as it gets colder with a turtleneck like man’s man McCloud back in their ‘70s heydays – Google it, younger guys. Brands like Hackett and Burberry (shown, both pages) are pimping big-budget versions, but a sharp eye and patient bin search can make thrift finds look perfect.

Speaking of the modernizing the iconic ‘70s, checks and plaids are all the rage for blazers, pants, shirts and even whole suits. The less daring don’t have to go head-to-toe to make it work – a single statement piece sets off your basics. Find inspiration in these looks from Topman (left) and Trina Turk.

Through the process,, Irvine became a huge a fan of Emmerich and his passion. “Roland was always talking about the homeless kids who we don’t know about today,” the actor says. “This little group of fictional characters represents those who weren’t made famous by the movement.”

Like the historic brick-throwing, slurlashing brawl that broke out in New York City outside a Greenwich Village gay bar in 1969, it provoked an uproar. And also like the Stonewall riots, the melting pot of people the film sought to represent felt unrepresented. Critics lashed out at gay action-turnedindie director Roland Emmerich’s fictional interpretation based around the events leading up to a landmark moment in LGBT history and rallied a fervent army of boycotters. The issue is the film’s lead.

When Emmerich became involved with the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center, he made a disheartening discovery: 40 percent of LA homeless youth are LGBT. Personally struck, he dug deeper and realized that history was repeating itself. “I read a lot about the Stonewall riots and found some kind of parallel – a group of homeless kids were very part of this riot too, the unsung heroes.” Emmerich recalls. “I said, ‘Maybe I have to help.’”

Crouching ‘Tiger,’ hidden pitfalls by Jeffery Silvey
WHEN THE ‘TIGER STYLE’ OF PARENTING IS OVER, SHINING YOUTHFUL ACHIEVEMENTS TURN INTO ADULT VEXATIONS FOR A PAIR OF ASIAN AMERICAN SIBLINGS IN A FUNNY NEW ALLIANCE THEATRE PLAY.
W
hen you’ve done ever ything right and by the book, what do you do when it all starts to go wrong?
That’s the question faced by Albert and Jennifer Chen, former star-student siblings who transitioned from the success and achievements of their youth to frustration and failure as adults in the new play Tiger Style! by Michael Lew, bowing in its world premiere next week at Alliance Theatre. “The name Tiger Style! takes inspiration from a book called ‘Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother,’ Lew tells David Atlanta. “In the book, the author describes a style of parenting that is pretty common among Asian Americans that emphasizes higher education, higher achievements, and discipline to make sure they get into the best colleges.” 32 | 9.23.15
Lew is familiar with the Tiger parent. His own discipline and talent landed him at Julliard. He began working on Tiger Style! in 2013 as a response to his professors’ suggestion that he write about being Chinese American. He didn’t want it to be a typical story about immigrants but instead wanted to write about his culture in a humorous, contemporary way.
and the Alliance in particular feel like an artistic home. His previous play, Bike America, was produced at the Alliance in 2013 under the direction of Moritz von Stuelpnagel. Tiger Style! reunites the playwright and director.
Since its inception at Juliard in 2013, the play has been workshopped at different theaters across the country. Now Lew is ready for the Alliance Theatre to host the world premiere. Although he is from San Francisco, Lew says that Atlanta

In order to qualify as a member of the august professional organization, Sword Swallowers Association International, a performer must be to swallow a sword with a blade at least 16 inches in length. Unlikely it may be that you’ll ever encounter a tool that lengthy, but if you do, contact us right away here at Dear Dom! Dear Dom, I just broke up with my boyfriend after seven years. He was cheating – again. I know it’s the right decision, but I can’t stop thinking about him. I’m tired of being sad all the time. What can I do? Done Understanding Philandering Ex-boyfriend “The Best Ex is a Dead Ex,” is my sobriquet for a situation like yours, DUPE. You’ll never catch a dead ex-boyfriend shacking up with somebody else. When he’s dead, he won’t drag you to his shitty company Christmas party or call in the middle of the night begging for bail money, either. You dumped his cheating ass. Your ex is dead to you. Next! Dear Dom,
Dear Dom,
Every Single Question... Every Single Answer Dear Dom, How do guys do deep throat? I love sucking cock, but getting those few inches down my gullet seems impossible without choking. If porn stars can do it, so can I. What’s the trick to giving great deep throat? Guidance About Gobbling
I was babysitting my 9-year old niece, and over dinner she asked me about Caitlin Jenner. I was stumped. How does somebody explain this to a grade schooler without going into a lot of details? Discussions On Caitlin You don’t need a Phd to have the transgender talk with a tot, DOC. Adults make things way too complicated. Children do best with straightforward answers. Explain it simply like this: “Do you remember when your grown-up teeth were coming in and Mom and Dad were glad that they were all shiny and straight? Do you remember your friend whose teeth came in a little crooked and she wasn’t happy with her smile? What did she do? She went to the dentist for braces. When they come off her teeth, they’ll be perfect and she’ll be happy. “Well, it’s like that for Caitlin. She was born as a boy named Bruce. Bruce was a strong boy who grew up to be a great athlete that went to the Olympics. But he was never really happy. Bruce couldn’t smile on the inside. So, Bruce went to a doctor. The doctor helped. Today she’s a pretty lady named Caitlyn who is perfectly happy and smiles all the time.
You needn’t be a sword swallower to do some serious skull- OK? Now finish your broccoli, kid.” fucking, GAG. However, those very same dangerous stage skills can be adapted towards giving the ultimate oral sex. Dan Meyer, Dom 39-time world champion sword swallower and holder of seven Advice columnist Dominic has been there and done that Guinness World Records, interrupted his lecture tour at Harvard with most everything. He gives a new low to all levels of and MIT to explain the key for a beginner is “to consciously relax depravity. He’s heard every question and every answer. one’s mind and body, get past the uncomfortable sensations, Give him a try, email DearDom@davidatlanta.com. focus very carefully in the correct alignment and placement, repress the gag refkex, and make sure you direct the blade precisely where it needs to go.” Warning: Advice given in this column is intended for entertainment and novelty purposes. You may be forced to choose between work and fun today – and the stars suggest choosing fun. Remember that keeping a good work-life balance is important. There’s a difference between ambition and obsession!
Today you should receive a sign that you are on the right spiritual path – and this sign will also point you to the next step. Watch for personal symbolism and mysterious occurrences. Read between the lines.
Try to ride today’s wave of high energy through the evening – you will likely get a lot done later in the day. A somewhat meek person in your life may be unusually dominant tonight – and you’re going to love this side of him!
A forgotten or unexpected task may disrupt your afternoon or early evening – you may be asked to work late, for instance. Tonight, don’t force yourself to go out if you really feel like staying in.
This evening may see you coming to a friend’s – or perhaps a new acquaintance’s – aid. Your good deed will be rewarded tenfold, as long as you don’t boast about it or embarrass its object. Your kindness will be noticed.
An exterior obstacle may force you to turn inward today – the solution to a worldly problem lies in your soul. Don’t look at this interior journey as a detour: It’ll make the destination all the more meaningful.

the armorettes
A high-flying day will provide a bird’s-eye view of your life – count your many blessings while they’re all in sight. A reminder of a defunct affair may send you plummeting this evening – don’t wallow in maudlin sentiment.
Apply the macro to the micro today: Grand philosophical ideas and important economic theories can help you answer personal questions of all kinds. Tonight, take the lead in making plans with your friends.
Don’t ignore a startling flash of inspiration today – harness it! Tonight, eat at home if you can. You should prepare at least part of the meal, and use local ingredients if at all possible. You’ll find out why soon enough.
You may battle frustration at work today. Be assured that great things are happening outside your view -- hang in there. This evening, you can do anything you set your mind to. It should be a fun night!
An invigorating, pleasant day may fade into a somewhat frustrating evening – outside forces are going to effect change in your life. Don’t fight this – it’ll turn out to be beneficial. Get a good night’s sleep tonight.
When a boss, a parent or some other authority figure says something that is clearly untrue today, it may be advantageous to simply keep your mouth shut. This evening, a bit of unexpected glamour will color social plans.

S E S S I O N That extra weight looks really good on you.
The Real Drama Queens of Atlanta are at it again. You two bitches should just stay off the beaches!
Getting syphalis from you wasn’t the worst part. Realizing you gave it to me knowingly was. Man, I sure hope one day you sober up and realize everyone already knows your doing meth again. #BASICBITCHSYNDROME
A real friend wouldn’t even glance at my man, much less make out with him in full view of the whole bar. Lushes. You’re both kicked to the curb.
You call it love. I call it a series of random run-ins whenever you feel lonely or bored.

Just to reiterate, I don’t get intimidated. You getting the biggest person you know to try will only get you and them hurt, Mary!
You pressed to get me and then to be exclusive. Now you ignore me for days on end. I deserve better.
She should be arrested for how she’s stomping in those kitten heels.
Consider my freak radar adjusted. Bye, Felicia!
Silly boy. They said youth is wasted on the young, not that the young are always wasted.
