and moderating. A performance art of sorts, working in front of large audiences with amazing celebrities, is really something that makes me happy. In fact, I’ll help introduce some of the talent appearing at Out on Film in Atlanta. I’ll see you next Wednesday for “Kiss Me, Kill Me” with Van Hansis and Gale Harold on ‘David Atlanta Night,’ Hansis will be in attendance with the director, and I’m excited for the opportunity to meet and greet with other out talent. There’s rarely the opportunity to see so many of our acting community together in one place, sharing their story with the rest of the world. It’s a sign of the times that something so great even exists. No matter what your obsession, or hobby or career choices, just be the most genuine you can be. The world is a lot smarter, and a bit more savvy these days. We can all spot bullshit a mile away. Your genuine passion should always be true to you. I promise, with patience and persistence, you will be rewarded for it.
Confessions of a gay actor Acting is a huge part of my life. It’s an important facet of what entertains us in our community, even if just for a temporary escape. I have been fortunate enough to be a part of the entertainment industry for over 25 years. Sure, there are times that I obsess over the parts I never got, but the ones I did get really make me proud. I’m proud mostly because I did it as a gay man. I’ve not been closeted since 1990, and aside from my background extra role in Ernest Goes to Camp back in the ‘80s, I’ve always been quite at ease with my sexuality. Within 5 minutes of talking to me, it’s easy to figure it out. So why try to mask myself? Of course, that doesn’t mean that over the years I’ve not been told that I’m just too gay, or too fat, or too odd looking for parts that I’ve gone after. After the initial sadness of not getting the parts I want, I always learn to balance the knowledge that every actor isn’t deserving of all the roles. I’ve had plenty of acting roles and crew opportunities over the years, so I’ve always felt needed and important. They just aren’t always my number one choice. My ego isn’t that sensitive, but I have always received as many ‘yes’s’ to balance the ‘no’s’ in an otherwise really tough industry. And believe it or not, 50/50 odds are better than what other actors get out of the Hollywood machine. It can be quite brutal. As I’ve gotten older, and fatter, and better looking (no comment) I’ve transitioned into more emceeing, judging, hosting, 20 | 9.30.15

How do you envision the future of HIV and the local non-profits that fight it? I would love to see more permanent supportive housing for people affected by HIV/AIDS so that we can continue saving and transforming lives by helping folks stay on their medications, which also prevents new infections. I would also love to see more collaboration amongst nonprofits in Atlanta. We do so much more when we work together. How has the community and its culture of giving changed?

Sealed with a ‘Kiss’
by Elijah Sarkesian
VAN HANSIS TALKS ABOUT HIS OUT ON FILM ‘DAVID ATLANTA NIGHT’ FEATURE KISS ME, KILL ME, NEW PROJECTS ON KICKSTARTER, AND MAKING TELEVISION HISTORY WITH DAYTIME’S FIRST GAY KISS.
Kiss Me, Kill Me, where he plays the lead role of Dusty. The film revolves around Dusty and some mysterious events involving his boyfriend.
“I would call Kiss Me, Kill Me ‘West Hollywood noir,’ where it kind of has the same look and feel of old classic Hollywood noir films, but it has a West Hollywood feel,” he says. “There’s this any actors work for years and years in hopes of a break- big party where Dusty gets into a pretty heated argument with out moment. Many fans will remember Gale Harold as Brian Kinney on Queer as Folk. Now Kiss Me, Kill Me While Hansis wasn’t the first actor to play the role, he’s by far marks Harold’s first gay role since that show ended. Hansis was the most recognized. That’s partially due to the history-making pleased to share the screen with Harold, saying that “Gale is a moment in 2007 when Luke kissed his boyfriend, Noah. While Kiss Me, Kill Me begins making its way through the festival circuit, EastSiders recently premiered its second season on Vimeo On Demand. If that wasn’t enough to keep Hansis busy, Ms. Guidance is a new web series that Hansis co-created, and will also serve as a cast member. “It’s about an actress who has to go back to the school she attended and become a guidance counselor,” Hansis says. “It’s a funny, dark comedy about expectations and reality.” Besides the actor himself, something that all three of Hansis’ projects share in common is fundraising through Kickstarter. It’s a process that Hansis fully endorses. “I think Kickstarter is an absolutely wonderful option for filmmakers,” he says. “It allows filmmakers to tell the story they want to tell. It’s an exciting way to get involved.” Now, he’s meeting the fans who’ve helped fund his projects face to face. When the film plays at Out on Film, Hansis will be one of several cast and crew members in attendance, including his director and Out on Film alum Casper Andreas. And while he may not be a Georgia native, it turns out his partner hails from Marietta, so Van has some familiarity with the area. He looks forward to using this particular trip into town to explore Atlanta itself. “I’ve spent a lot of time in the Greater Atlanta area, but really, I haven’t been in Atlanta, the city proper that much. But I’ve been all around the area,” Hansis says. “I’m excited about being able to actually see more of the city.” Kickstarting a career
Part of his first official intown tour will include the “Kiss Me” afterparty with David Atlanta at Blake’s after the screening.
Hansis became attached to the film through a different project – a web series called EastSiders. Van Hansis appears at the screening of Kiss Me, Kill Me as part of Out on Film’s ‘David Atlanta Night’ on Wednesday, “It’s a great series about a gay couple that was created by Kit Oct. 7, 9:15 p.m., at Midtown Art Cinema, 931 Monroe Dr. Williamson, who was a co-producer on this film. Jinkx! on film by Elijah Sarkesian
‘DRAG BECOMES HIM’ LOOKS BEHIND THE MAKEUP OF ‘DRAG RACE’ SUPERSTAR JINKX MONSOON AND REVEALS THE PERSON BEHIND THE PERSONA DURING ONE OF OUT ON FILM’S ‘DAVID NIGHT’ FEATURE PRESENTATIONS.
F
rom a small stage in Portland to the main stage of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Jinkx Monsoon has worked tirelessly to become one of the biggest names in drag. Now, with Drag Becomes Him, Monsoon pulls back the curtain to offer a look behind the scenes.
Monsoon, born Jerick Hoffer in 1987, comes from a working class family in Portland. Hoffer came out as gay in middle school, while also identifying as genderless. Drag began at the tender age of 15 at an underage nightclub. After moving to Seattle in 2006, Hoffer became involved in Seattle’s arts scene and other productions, then co-created a web series for Funny or Die, Monsoon Season, which first introduced the world to Jinkx Monsoon in 2011. Of course, most fans today know Jinkx Monsoon from a successful run on the fifth season of Drag Race. After wins in challenges like “Snatch Game” and an unpredecented eight-week streak among the show’s top contestants, Monsoon was named the Season 5 champion. Now the film Drag Becomes Him serves as the culmination of a years-long project that started with a YouTube series of the same name. That series, which began in June 2011, was started to explore Monsoon’s life in and out of drag by director Alex Berry. The film, which is one of the two ‘David Night’ features during Out on Film, pulls together the five parts of the web series and includes expanded content exclusive to the film. And yes, the name of the series is inspired by the Meryl Streep classic, Death Becomes Her. Jinkx Monsoon’s Drag Becomes Him screens Wednesday, Oct. 7, 9:20 p.m., as part of Out on Film’s ‘David Night’ lineup at Midtown Art Cinema. 26 | 9.30.15

Liz in September Monday, Oct. 5 • 8:15 p.m. If you like your films with a heavily female cast, Liz in September is perfect. Party girl Liz (The L Word ’s Patricia Velasquez) loves to spend her birthday every year with friends at a Caribbean beach resort. After being diagnosed with a terminal illness, she wants to keep things a secret so she can enjoy one more time at the resort. When her friends dare her to seduce a young woman, she ends up getting more than she expected. Tab Hunter Confidential Saturday, Oct. 3 • 6:10 p.m. In the 1950s, Tab Hunter was on top of the world as America’s favorite boy-next-door actor and singer. If you want a modernday comparison, think Nick Jonas right before he started showing off his body last year: both wholesome and sexy. He was linked to actresses like Natalie Wood, Debbie Reynolds and Sophia Loren, but he was secretly gay. Decades later, Hunter offers a look back at his time in Hollywood and the relationships kept hidden from the public eye.
54: The Director’s Cut Saturday, Oct. 3 • 8 p.m. You know how a lot of director’s cuts of films don’t add much to the film? This is not one of those. 54: The Director’s Cut restores over half an hour of footage to the 1998 cult classic, including some hot, specifically gay content that Miramax films demanded be cut from the original theatrical cut. The film focuses on Shane (Ryan Phillippe) as he gets sucked into the never-ending party of Studio 54.
In the Grayscale Monday, Oct. 5 • 9:10 p.m. In the entry that Out on Film describes as “perhaps the sexiest film” playing this year, “straight” married architect Bruno struggles with his latest project – a civic landmark in Santiago, Chile. The project brings him into contact with Fer, an openly gay man with whom he begins an affair. As Bruno comes to terms with his sexuality, he finds that he’s more comfortable somewhere between gay and straight.
Daddy Tuesday, Oct. 6 • 7:20 p.m. Former Atlantan Gerald McCullouch, known for CSI and films like BearCity, serves as both director and star for Daddy. Colin (McCullouch) has it all – a great job, a line of hot young guys, and a best friend who’s always there for him. When Colin gets involved with an intern (Jaime Cepero), the friendship is put to the test, and the future he envisions begins to fall apart.
Queer Moxie Sunday, Oct. 4 • 3 p.m. Queer Moxie offers something unique for Out on Film: an indepth look at Atlanta’s queer performance art scene. You will be ardently into the joy of life today! You see each moment as a blessing and you’ll want to make the most of all of them. What could be the source of such boundless bliss? Perhaps there’s a handsome man waiting for you in your very near future, and he’s not wearing pants.
Don’t let fast-paced people knock you off your game today. Some might call it plodding, but you prefer meticulous. In either case, you’ll be holding up traffic and not only because of the wide load. Did I say that in public? Let them know that rushing you won’t make you go any faster.
You talk a good game, but can you really hit the bulls-eye? Be careful of exaggerated boasts today, as some may challenge you on them. It’ll be cool if they dare you to make a killer cheesecake. But if they ask you to drop your pants you may not be so self-assured.
A spat with your boss may leave you on the brink of explosion. Don’t allow professional problems to ruin your evening, though. Chant your mantra, take a few deep breaths and then follow them with some shots of tequila at happy hour with a few, very trustworthy coworkers. There’s no telling what you might say after a few cocktails.
You rarely make plans during the week because you like to roll with your after work moods. And besides, the good times usually come to you without much work on your part. Tonight is right for casual happy hour drinks that morph into a late night supper with someone particularly special.
You may be dealing with coworker problems, but let it go. The petty revenge you’ve been planning will only get in the way of completing that big project. And what could be better revenge, truly, than receiving a big promotion or raise because of the success of said project? Keep your eye on the prize and move on. 66 | 9.30.15
presented by
the armorettes
Expect your day to be like the arms of a metronome, constantly swinging left to right, pausing briefly at one extreme before racing back towards the other, never stopping anywhere in between. It could be a wild ride, and don’t expect the tempo to change any time soon.
You’ll be prancing and preening today, with so much high energy you’ll need to work it off somewhere -- so why not the gym? Let the stress roll off your shoulders when you break a sweat and ground yourself for the rest of the week with some deep stretches. Don’t forget to check out who else is working off some excess energy, though.
Today you’re feeling like a macho, macho man. You swagger with the confidence of a rock star yet with the refined manners of an English gentleman. You’ll be quite a catch for some lucky guy who doesn’t mind having his moon continually eclipsed by your sun.
You may have to rally the troops with strong words of motivation. Whether they buy that drivel depends on how forcefully you deliver it. But you better start working it because the clock is ticking, and once they go off on that extended lunch, nothing will get done.
It’ll be like you’re hyper-charged with electricity today. That will make you extremely hard to handle for those who are attracted to you. Whenever they try to touch your voluminous power they will be zapped into nothingness. Kind of makes it hard to form meaningful relationships, doesn’t it?
You may have to start adopting fictitious names and phone numbers to keep guys from bugging you. You’re too nice to tell guys to piss off, and herein is the root of your dilemma. So pass out the old faux name and info today. Guys will be psyched when they see that they got Zac Efron’s phone number.
Bitch
S E S S I O N I’ve come to terms that I’m evil and that you’re a victim.
Your reputation precedes you. And that’s not a compliment.
SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH, tweet @BitchSessionATL or email bitch@davidatlanta.com *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
Yes I miss you but don’t you think for a minute that I’ll let you back into my life to hurt me like that again.
Girl, please. You aren’t fooling anybody. The only thing fancy about you is your delusion of grandeur.
When you come for me, bitch, you better come correct. These nails and this booty may say I’m a lady, but I can still beat a little turd like a real man.
Queen, don’t prance by my table like that. Your glow glitter rainbow aura dropped something in my lunch.
Picking up guys outside the MARTA station… Yeah, nothing creepy about that. Nothing creepy at all.
Be careful, bitch. Your drug habits are showing.
Trolls are so vain...they probably think this post is about them. Yes, troll, it’s about you!
