OURSONG HOLIDAY CONCERT

Nothing says we’re here, we’re queer, and we’re secular like a big gay round of holiday bingo for the locally beloved Pets Are Loving Support. Bubba D. Licious, Edie Cheezburger and Jaye Lish call the balls.

Atlanta’s LGBT chorus raises its co-ed voices with some new twists that will put a whole new spin on holiday tunes you’ve grown to love. Unusual styles and arrangements make sure that this is not your grandaddy’s same-ol’ Silent Night.

A JOHN WATERS CHRISTMAS

FLAP JOKES

It’s time. The biggest gay holiday party for charity blasts the gay-TL into the holiday season. For The Kid In All Of Us asks you to bring a quality unwrapped toy and $5 for entry. Then get ready for DJ beats, open bars, a silent auction and even VIP noshes if you choose. Dress to impress.

The one, the only and the infamous John Waters hits town with his unapologetically bawdy tales of holiday yore. Hear the Baltimore-laden epics from the man who made Divine a household name and made “Hairspray” the only movieturned-musical-turned-movie-musical in history.

Hot Mic Comedy offers an afternoon of hot cakes and hot jokes with gay Atlanta comic Ian Aber as host. A free pancake supper – while supplies last – is on the table, and a comedy show is in the air with five awesome comedians.

appropriate behavior in these kinds of situations. It’s certainly easy to blur the line of experiences you can relate to, and you could wind up making it all about you. Ultimately, the fact that they cared to spend time with us makes it a very generous gift. It’s a different kind of charity than I or Andrew are accustomed to, but a welcomed one. Having to deal with buying a house, the stresses of worrying about inconsistent work performance, and an extremely ill husband force you take a different perspective on things in your life. You never know when something major will happen to take you off your usual routine. But the reward of knowing so many people really are true friends to us makes getting on the path a whole lot more adventurous. A special thank you to our friends who really came through when it got dark for us. Eric, for sending the care basket from Cedar Soap Company. Y’all should get some as Christmas presents; they smell super yummy and feel even better on your skin. Carrie, for being an awesome therapist and massaging my husband’s poor swollen joints. Nick and Keoki for visiting my husband so many times in the hospital that it was making me look bad.

Do unto others as blah blah blah!

David, for always trying to feed us. Cyndi, for actually coming and cooking for us. Pastor Paul, for the faith you had when we didn’t have any. Rachel and Mandy, for the cookies. Winn and Elizabeth for the flowers and balloons, and Jody for coloring books.

Charity comes in many forms, and not always in the most obvious ways. For that, I am truly grateful as my stubborn pride There are so many more. You’re all amazing, and the world is a gets in the way of attempts by people to do nice things for me better place for your kind hearts, and healing hands. I’m not always so nice, but when so many great people come together and or my husband. do good things for assholes like me, even I get the warm tinglies. It seems that this time of the year, most of us are busy obsessing on how to get travel plans lined up, because of just how Happy Holidays, to all of my Obsessed readers. I’d love to hear quickly the time flies between Thanksgiving and Christmas. about the fun you have, the naughty… and the nice! Not to mention, with all those presents to buy, and parties to schedule, the to-do list grows longer than anything Santa would ever have to look at. But what happens, when a horrible life event gets in the way of all that? How do we handle it, and what do we do to steer back on track? My husband and I began looking for a house to buy and had actually made an offer on one in Jefferson Park, just two weeks after beginning our search. On the day our offer was accepted, Andrew had to go to the ER. A pretty nasty bacterial infection was discovered, and it kept him in and out of the VA hospital for over three weeks. It’s when life kicks you down that you realize there are people out there who really want to give you a piece of their time and energy – to revitalize you as you need it. Don’t misunderstand me, though. The opposite can also be true. Some of our friends would check in, just to bitch about their own trials in life. And that’s OK. Not everyone knows what’s 22 | 12.9.15

Joining Hearts’ heart just got a lot bigger by Dustin Shrader

POPULAR LOCAL NON-PROFIT KNOWN FOR ITS YEARROUND GAY FUNDRAISING BLOWOUTS MAGNIFIES ITS MISSION TO HELP FIGHT HIV.

O

ver the past few years, there has been a steady climb in the diagnosis of HIV/AIDS among gay men across the nation. Atlanta increasingly faces the brunt of it, and gay Atlanta’s beloved Joining Hearts has decided to be an even bigger part of the conversation and solution.

photos: Russ Youngblood

David Atlanta: Where do you see the future under the new mission? Jerry Henderson: This change puts Joining Hearts in a position to work directly with community leaders, [AID Service Organizations], the city, concerned citizens, and HIV/AIDS experts to assess need and determine how best to leverage funds to have the most impact on the current state of HIV/AIDS in Atlanta. We want to lead community discussions to identify and tackle contributing factors. We are in this until there is a cure or we can stop transmissions.

Over the past two years, we have explored different ideas for events, some have gone well and others will not return to our roster. Our goal is to have entertaining, high quality events that perform well, raising much-needed funds for our beneficiaries and community.

Supporters should see an elevation in production quality at all of our events. Our goal is to have a streamlined event schedule filled with exceptional events. Joining Hearts is evolving to make the most impact and support the specific needs of HIV/AIDS in Atlanta at this moment in time. Funds will be allocated based on an assessment of need and impact with beneficiaries submitting proposals outlining required funding, intended use, and expected impact. Beneficiaries will report spending and results so we can track impact, improvements, and allow us to make informed decisions of future need and funding. Joining Hearts will not limit the number of beneficiaries we help. We plan to have our first community discussion in January where we will be inviting interested parties to join the discussion and learn more about our selection process for support and funding. Are there any teasers/plans for next year to get people excited about 2016? Joining Hearts is being completely rebranded with a new mission and logo. We are using this opportunity to seek professionals and corporations in our community who want to change the state of HIV/AIDS in Atlanta. As an all-volunteer organization with lofty goals and a lot of work to accomplish, we need all the help we can get. We are very excited about the evolution of Joining Hearts and hope many will join us as we work towards a stronger, healthier Atlanta. davidatlanta.com | 27

About the new caregivers: Dr. Amy Swartz earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and did her residency at Emory University. She served as attending physician at Pride for the last 14 years and was a senior medical associate at the Grady Infectious Disease Center for 10 years before that. She is Board Certified from the American Board of Internal Medicine and is certified in HIV care by the American Academy of HIV Medicine. She’s a member of the American Medical Association, the Southern Medical Association, and the Medical Association of Georgia.

TWO ATLANTA MEDICAL FACILITIES SPECIALIZING IN HIV HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT THEY ARE JOINING FORCES. LONGTIME ATLANTA MAINSTAY ABSOLUTECARE ANNOUNCES IT WILL OPEN ITS DOORS TO PATIENTS OF PRIDE MEDICAL, ANOTHER FIXTURE IN LGBT ATLANTA WITH A FULL RANGE OF SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH HIV.

P

ride Medical closes the doors of its Howell Mill Road offices after Dec. 14. Several of Pride Medical’s beloved doctors and caregivers will move to AbsoluteCare, which resides on Peachtree Street north of Piedmont Hospital near the Houston’s restaurant.

An official announcement outlines the changes in full: After 20 years, Pride Medical is closing its doors, but AbsoluteCARE is opening theirs to all of Pride’s patients and many of their caregivers and staff.

For two decades, Pride Medical has been a fixture in the LGBT community and has been, in fact, synonymous with gay men’s health. But it’s likely that only the Pride name will be missed. The patients they have served so well—along with the compassionate people who served them—will have a new home at AbsoluteCARE just four miles away. 30 | 12.9.15

There is literally Pride in AbsoluteCARE. Dr. Amy Swartz and Terry Hackworth, FP, along with about six full-time staff members, will join the AbsoluteCARE team led by Medical Director Dr. Joel Rosenstock, who founded the full-service Medical Center and Pharmacy in 2000 to care for a struggling and underserved HIV population in Atlanta. “I’ve been working in Atlanta serving this population for 26 years,” says Dr. Rosenstock, “and I think the combination of Pride Medical with AbsoluteCARE is the most exciting thing to happen in a long time. Both medical centers have provided compassionate and innovative care for many years, but together they will be able to accomplish much more. The AbsoluteCARE of the future will test more clients, identify and engage many more people in care, assist with behavioral health, impact social determinants of disease, and improve the health of Atlantans for years to come.”

AbsoluteCARE’s New Pride

Terry Hackworth is an adult nurse practitioner. He diagnoses and helps patients manage acute and chronic illness, working both independently and collaboratively with other caregivers. He earned his bachelor’s degree in nursing from Morehead State University, his MBA from the University of Phoenix, and his Masters of Science in Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he specialized in adult/gerontological care.

AbsoluteCARE Medical Center and Pharmacy, established in 2000, has developed an innovative, superior model of care. This NCQA level III accredited Patient Centered Medical Home uses care managers, dietitians, social workers, integrated behavioral health services, pharmacists, and educators along with a superb caregiver team to serve its patients. As one of Georgia’s largest providers for insured patients with HIV, AbsoluteCARE also serves as a chronic care center for those with multiple chronic comorbid conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, COPD, hypertension, and more. AbsoluteCARE also features an on-site reference laboratory, infusion services, and Georgia’s largest single-site, independent pharmacy. AbsoluteCARE is located in Buckhead, Atlanta.

advice

Dear LUNG, Let’s talk turkey: Georgia’s reputation as a place to quit smoking is black, LUNG. Besides a very poorly funded Tobacco Quitline (877270-STOP), gay men and lesbians are nearly twice as likely to smoke as straight people, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Cigarette sales taxes have long been considered a deterrent to smoking. Georgia ranks 47th for sales taxes on cigarettes at just 37-cents per pack. Only Missouri, Virginia, and Louisiana are lower. The highest is New York State at $4.35—plus add another $1.60 in NYC. The average price per pack is $6.39 here, versus $12.85 there.

Dear Dom,

Vaping is the current rage amongst tobacco quitters. E-cigarettes and personal vaporizers undoubtedly reduce the nasty risks presented by standard cigarettes. However, their effectiveness in smoking cessation is unclear. There is behavioral therapy, in which a counselor helps find ways not to smoke; or prescriptions, or nicotine replacement aids, like gum or a patch. Nonetheless, unaided quitting is, by far, the way for 90 percent of folks who stop smoking. So if you’re serious about kicking the habit, you’d better find a reliable meat slicer. Because the very best way is cold turkey. Dear Dom,

Every Single Question... Every Single Answer

My boyfriend invited me to his 10-year high school reunion this summer. He was very popular in school, and I’m proud to be his date to this big event. But I’m really nervous.

Dear Dom,

I’m from Connecticut. How do I make a good impression on his friends in this rural Georgia town?

Panties turn me on. Nothing gets me throbbing quite like slipping into a sexy pair of women’s lingerie. How Young, Anxious, Northern Kid can I introduce them to the guys I hookup with without Dear YANK, freaking them out? Simply Wild About Panties

Those good ol’ boys ain’t gonna hurt ya. Yes, you two will draw inquisitive stares and some uninformed questions. Remember, reunions are about former friends and classmates reconnecting Dear SWAP, with one another. Most of them will be bringing a partner along, Ah, the joys and jeers of gender bending. If Jaden Smith can too. You might even be surprised to find other gay guys. A heluva trade boy clothes for girl clothes, you can too, SWAP. If you’re lot can change during the decade after graduation. going to be a panty-clad piggy, go whole hog. For your next date, break out the frilliest, flimsiest, barely-there lingerie in your Follow your boyfriend’s lead. If he wears a suit to the reunion, do likewise. If he starts a conversation, join in. If he starts cruising collection. the still-hunky high school football star, you three should take it When the moment of truth arrives, don’t be shy. Fly your freak to the boy’s room. If they start passing around moonshine and flag high. Who knows? That macho stud might end up as your you hear banjo music, be afraid. Be very afraid. slutty scissor sister. Dear Dom, Smoking is killing me. Now in my mid-30s, I started with cigarettes during my teens. I’ve begun a fitness kick and the cigs have got to go. But, it’s a lot harder than I thought. Got any tips to help a quitter? Long Under Nicotine’s Grip 64 | 12.9.15

You’ll hope for a day that will be a scorching hot ball of fire. What you’ll get will be the complete opposite, and it’ll be hard to keep your eyes open. Get in a vigorous workout to break the fog. Follow that with a few lattes and you’ll be good to go for the rest of the day.

Sometimes a guy needs to let go of unneeded attachments. Sometimes a guy carries around too much extra baggage. Sometimes a guy needs to know when to just let go. This could be you today. So took a hard look at your personal baggage, and just let go.

You’ll express your opinions in loud and forceful tones today. People have come to expect that of you, but you still seem able to strike a few raw nerves. So expect today to be scrappy, with people telling you to put up or shut up. That second choice would probably be smarter and a lot less painful.

Buy a gift for the person you love best today: Yourself. You spend so much on others it may be time to treat yourself. You won’t get extravagant but you deserve something special.

You’ll need supreme confidence in yourself to get through some tests today. They’ll seem daunting, but success will open a lot of doors. That will be something you could really get used to, especially after having so many slammed in your face in the past.

Your plans to be organized will go quickly out the window today. This may cause some dizziness and disorientation. Repeated tries to bring things back to an even keel will be futile. This sounds like a good time to curl up in the fetal position.

the armorettes

You may have to establish yourself as group leader today. Your pals won’t have a problem with that, as they don’t want the responsibility. Rule with the wisdom of Solomon today. It’ll be far more effective than being bitchy and mean, although not as much fun.

Your boyfriend will create problems for you today. His demands will be outlandish and his mood foul. It’s never easy being the whipping boy, but grit your teeth and hang in there.

Annoying and meddlesome people will sorely test your sense of humor today. They’ll eventually work your last nerve, bringing you to the brink of explosion. Chant your mantra to get through this trying day. Then go home and pop ‘The Golden Girls’ into the DVD player. Now that’s funny!

You keep a finger on the pulse of technology, and no one can accuse you of being a dinosaur. They can, however, rightfully accuse you of being a nerd. But you take that as a compliment, so wear your badge with pride today. Go out and show guys a nerd can be sexier -and a lot smarter -- than an Abercrombie model.

Sudden changes may rock your world today. You’ll be blindsided by most of them, but keep on keeping on. No matter how harsh, changes are a part of life. Dealing with them in a mature and professional manner is the only way to get though them.

Mind your own business today and don’t involve yourself in drama and catfights. Let the rest of them slug it out while you focus on your own life. The hammer will fall, but not on you, and you’ll come out of it smelling like a rose and first in line for good karma.
