HAIR DEFINES YOU

Losing your hair or just want to keep the hair you have? With new advances in technology, you have legitimate options. Don始t wait! Stop your hair loss now.

the

rt of Hair Replacement

Let it be known too that Kesha’s first seven singles each reached within the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, which is incredibly hard to do one or two times, much less seven. But back to the legal battle. Kesha, Sony and Dr. Luke have been battling in court since 2014. That’s when she checked into rehab for an eating disorder, which she blamed on the producer because he would call her a “fat fucking refrigerator.” It was also during this year that Kesha filed a lawsuit claiming that Dr. Luke sexually, verbally and physically abused for nearly 10 years. Due to the amount of time that it would take to go through the court system to properly examine both lawsuits (Dr. Luke countersued Kesha for defamation and breach of contract), Kesha sought to be released from her contract with Kemosabe Records, a subsidiary of Sony, in order to record with other producers. Under the contract, she is unable to do any music without her alleged abuser knowing or without his involvement. So whether her claims of abuse are true or not, she is forced to only work with someone she wants to have nothing to do with. In mid February, a judge in the New York Supreme Court ruled against Kesha being released from her contract with Dr. Luke and Sony. The photo of her crying in the back of the courtroom went viral, and #freekesha was everywhere and everything.

#FreeKesha, and why So by now, you’ve probably heard some talks about the legal battle that the artist Kesha is currently going through with her record label, Sony, and her alleged abuser/mega-producer, Dr. Luke. You’ve also probably seen hashtags like #freekesha and #peopleoverprofit all over Facebook and Twitter. But what’s really going on with all of this stuff, and why should you even care about it? Before exploring the legal battle, let’s refresh your memory on Kesha, aka my spirit animal. Kesha (formerly known as Ke$ha) is a pop artist who basically dominated the music charts from 2009 to 2012. She was first featured (not credited at first but later given the credit) on Flo-Rida’s 2009 hit “Right Round,” which spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Because Flo-Rida was working with Dr. Luke on the track, after they both wanted a female to sing the hook of the song, Dr. Luke used Kesha. She didn’t make a cent off of the collaboration, and Dr. Luke allegedly denied her a writing credit for the song. Red Flag #1. Once “Right Round” hit, it was Kesha’s time to shine (and pass out in trash cans). Her debut single, “Tik Tok”, spent nine weeks at No. 1 and was eventually named No. 56 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Songs of All Time – that’s just stupid crazy good. The track is also tied at No. 2 as the most digitally downloaded song ever with over 15 million sales – that’s just stupid crazy good too! 22 | 3.9.16

The problem is that legally, despite the over-pouring support for Kesha from today’s biggest music stars (Adele, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Lorde, Snoop Dogg, Kelly Clarkson) and the PR nightmare for Sony, the label can’t cancel the contract because it’s with Dr. Luke, not them. Back in 2011, for a deposition associated with a suit against Dr. Luke and Kesha by her former manager, Kesha stated under oath that Dr. Luke had not sexually abused her. Now, some people might argue that if she lied back then, she could be lying now just to try and get out of her contract. If she is telling the truth, then she’s forced to work with her accused abuser. Under the terms of the contract, Kesha is required to deliver six albums under Dr. Luke’s company (four more to go), and she could potentially be bound to it for up to 20 years! No matter what, fans are going to rally with Kesha from now until the end. However, Dr. Luke’s star power is dwindling. The once most sought-after producer hasn’t really created a hit since the court battle became public. Big artists just don’t want to get involved with Dr. Luke for fear of potential backlash. Even though Kesha lost her battle to be released from her contract with Dr. Luke, she hasn’t lost her war yet. Her fans love her. Artists love her. If anyone can successfully come back from this mental and physical beating, it’s The Glitter Warrior Princess herself. #freekesha

2016 DAVID ATLANTA

DINING GUIDE Compiled by Mike Fleming

S

ometimes it’s easy to forget how lucky we all are to be gay in Atlanta. The sheer volume of options for nightlife, entertainment, sports, arts and just

about every LGBT subuculture outweighs even some iconic larger cities. An awesome extension of our cultural wealth, Atlanta’s gay cups runneth over for restaurant choices, too. That’s why this annual Dining Guide is so popular. From casual to chic, date night to boys’ night, enjoy the following reminders of the most popular, as well as a heads up on some new and hidden gems.

DINING GUIDE

Forget the pretense. Your t-shirt, shorts and jeans are welcome here. Whether on a break or you have all day, let your hair down and relax at one of these places.

LAS MARGARITAS

JOHNNY’S PIZZA

Latin fare with a gay flair. On any given Sunday, brunch is hopping. And on most every day of the week, gay Atlanta’s own Oscar Valdivieso is usually holding court over his popular eatery. Sample the extensive tequila selection and specialty drinks while you scarf up some awesome food.

The real McCoy. New York Italian pizza so good you’d slap your mama. Whole pie or by the slice, the prices are great, too. Get a slice with one of their actually good side salads if you just have to watch your figure. Speaking of watching, watch them make it through the old-timey window.

PAPI’S CUBAN & CARIBBEAN GRILL

MOE’S SOUTHWEST GRILL

CASSEROLES

This local chain may be best known for what happens the moment you walk in. The chant of “Welcome to Moe’s!” isn’t just a gimmick; it’s an attitude that permeates your whole experience at any location of this build-your-ownburrito mainstay.

So casual, you set the stage at your own home or office. Buy one of their amazing dishes frozen, then just thaw and eat. It’s great for an occasion when you need to feed a lot of people, or when casual dining just means you, the couch, the TV and a fork.

Eat this: You can’t leave without trying Rey’s Cuban or Ropa Vieja Sandwiches. These conglomerations of pressed perfection may be the best of their kind in Atlanta.

Eat this: The bowls have all the Southwest goodness of each signature burrito, without the tasty tortilla. Order it without the rice, too, if you’re really watching your carbs.

Eat this: The Crab & Asparagus risotto is as good as it sounds, but the good ol' beefy mac and cheese will never disappoint either.

Men 4 Meals Midtown meals mean men admiring men. That said, some places raise gayness to full Code Pink, outward from our city’s gayest street corner and beyond.

G’S MIDTOWN

Formerly Gilbert’s, this creative take on meaty fare has been delighting its gays since 2000. Brothers Sean and Gilbert Yeremyan also own neighboring eatery 10th & Piedmont, as well as Hobnob. It’s trés internatíonale, but totally warm and inviting. Eat this: Deceptively simple, the smoked tomato basil bisque with hints of asiago will have you turning up your nose at similarly named soups. Try that as well. 1824 Cheshire Bridge Road NE • roxxfanclub.com

There is more than one location, but anything at Ansley Mall has our heart. Fresh, healthy and decadently delicious, this is the perfect place to meet your gays after the Big Gay Gym next door or before Bearbucks.

LIPS ATLANTA Come for the drag, stay for the food. OK the food and the drag. Dinner and a show finally answers your burning question about how, exactly, is life a cabaret. High-glam decor and high-drag divas like Charlie Brown and Bubba D. Licious make this a muststop to make a big night of it. Try Sunday Gospel Brunch too. Eat this: The menu of American fare changes, but it’s always worth the prix fixe or a la carte pricing. Do make reservations. 3011 Buford Hwy NE • lipsatl.com 28 | 3.9.16

This European bistro is consistently voted the best place for a gay first date umpteen years running. Conveniently located by Midtown Art Cinema, it’s perfect for a movie night, before-or“après” your day. Or night.

Top Chef darling Kevin Gillespie, who also rocks your culinary world at Revival in Decatur, adds his mad skills to the mixeduse mix at Glenwood Park. This former industrial complex is perfect for Gillespie’s eclectic take on small plates to be shared.

A veteran of fine dining in Midtown and among its longtime list of loyal gays, this French restaurant serves all the classics you love in the atmosphere – see what we did there? – that makes you say Oooh la la. Pricier, and worth every penny.

HIDDEN GEMS

Get off the Beaten Path

2016 DAVID ATLANTA

DINING GUIDE

Places we love don’t always get all the fanfare. Some of them are worth looking past regular haunts to expand our dining horizons. Here are just a few of our favorites.

ARGOSY

LA HACIENDA

Eat this: The brunch is fantastic, but we’re all about the dinner option of wood fired Butternut Pie pizza: Citrus marinated squash with pancetta, mozzarella, pedano, red onion, and garlic-infused olive oil. Handcrafted hot dogs and spicy popcorn are also worth a try.

Eat this: Just ask for “The Bowl.” Your choice of meat – but pick the pork marinated all day in milk – with cheesy rice, charro beans, onions, pico, corn, guac, sour cream and cilantro. Mix it up and enjoy.

This wood-and-exposed-brick gastropub ups the game on stylish New American fare while staying true to its hip East Atlanta roots. A vast craft beer selection is second only to the food and will keep you there long after the last bite.

If it’s not already, this Mexican eatery is about to become a regular stop on your restaurant rounds. Generous portions, a helpful staff and authentic flavors raise this place over its brethren and instantly into a Midtown mainstay.

900 Monroe Dr. NE 470 Flat Shoals Ave. SE • argosy-east.com • lahaciendamidtown.com

HI-FIVE DINER

When it comes to breakfast for dinner, or coffee with friends, the only thing that could make it better is cocktails. Well, lucky for you this place has all of that – and more. Take the throwback diners you love, add cocktails and mix well with modern extras like hot teas, designer juices, a cereal bar. Eat this: The avocado toast could become your new staple. Mixed with lemon oil and chil flake and spread on multigrain bread, we recommend adding tomato, feta cheese and a fried egg. The Luigi Wallbanger is our favorite bar order. 903 Peachtree Street NE • hifivediner.com

RADIAL CAFÉ Frank Bragg brought everything you used to love about him at Einstein’s, and everything you used to love about the original Radial – and bam! – created the best little breakfast, lunch and dinner spot south of Edgewood Ave. With daily specials and always a few surprises, this gay-owned bit of goodness is certified green and serves healthy, fabulous and even gluten-free options. Eat this: Pickle-brined Fried Chicken with Sriracha Mashed Potatoes? OMG so friggin good. Rather have Dr. Pepper Barbecue Brisket? Go for it. 1530 DeKalb Ave. NE • radial.com

MAMA’S COCINA Who doesn’t love Mom’s Kitchen. Well when Mom is the same one responsible for Las Margaritas and the former Taco Cabana, it comes with all your Latin favorites at prices your mom would appreciate you spending too. Perfect for lunch, dinner or postbar 24-hour deliciousness. Eat this: We’re eating the Pollo a la Plancha, and we’re eting it every single time. Comes with rice, beans, tortillas and the sweet satisfaction of a full belly. 1958 Piedmont Road • mamascocinalatina.com 34 | 3.9.16

SOMETHING SPECIAL

Staff picks and hat tips Even with all the choices presented in this year’s Dining Guide, we still have options that simply must be shared. Never ones to leave anything on the table, our staffers each chose a personal favorite, plus an extra suggestion that we just couldn’t ignore.

DINING GUIDE

THIS IS THE AWFUL ENVIRONMENT in which Charlie Sheen decided to publicly disclose on Nov. 17 that he was one of roughly 35 million folks on the planet who are living with a particular virus inside their bodies. You’ve already heard more than enough about Sheen, but the Nolan defamation case testifies to just how desperate Sheen’s situation must have become that he felt he needed get his status out into a public that, generally, still finds HIVpositive people worth contempt, ridicule, aversion and disgrace.

IN CASE YOU HAD ANY MISCONCEPTIONS DESPITE ADVANCES IN TREATMENT AND PREVENTION, HERE’S A FRIENDLY HEADS UP ABOUT GAY MEN AND HIV. A FEW MONTHS AGO, it became official: HIV is loathsome. No, stay with me here. It all had started so innocently: Back in 2013, the New York State Division of Human Rights posted a public awareness ad that featured the image of a woman alongside the text “I AM POSITIVE(+)” and “I HAVE RIGHTS.” The intent was to inform people with HIV that the state’s laws protected them from discrimination. The folks who created the ad grabbed the model’s photo from Getty Images, a stock photo service. Only the model in that picture, Avril Nolan, didn’t have HIV – and she didn’t want anyone thinking she did. Can you blame her? I hear people get unlawfully discriminated against for having that virus! Someone should put out an ad reminding folks about that. Anyway, Nolan (and her lawyers) sued the state for defamation, and in 46 | 3.9.16

Every World AIDS Day, experts rattle off all sorts of big, sobering, scary numbers. They talk about prevention, treatment and the search for a cure. Politicians politicize, activists advocate, blowhards bloviate. The efforts around World AIDS Day often seem shallow or pointless. It’s easy for a grass-roots movement to lose some of its sense of soul when its primary day of activism becomes a regularly scheduled event.

BUT LET’S NOT FORGET the point, that having HIV doesn’t make someone a bad person. You’re not a smoking gun, you’re not a car with no brakes, you’re not a ticking time bomb. Building on Elizabeth Taylor’s AIDS legacy by Jeff Berry

“My work as an ETAF ambassador entails many things,” Burton says, “but primarily I serve as a spokesperson or a message deliverer when called upon, although the hard ‘on-the-ground’ work is delivered by (ETAF Managing Director) Joel Goldman and his wonderful staff.”

any know Kate Burton as an actress, most recently portraying the right-wing Vice President Sally Langston in the hit TV show Scandal, and on Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Ellis Grey, the late mother of lead character Dr. Meredith Grey.

In her day job, Burton has garnered two Emmy nominations for her portrayals of strong characters developed by Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal.

Elizabeth Taylor founded ETAF in 1991 to support organizations delivering direct care and services to people living with HIV and AIDS, often to the most marginalized populations, according to their website. Today, Taylor’s friends and family work together as ETAF ambassadors to help keep the issue of HIV/AIDS topof-mind for the public. Taylor’s trust covers the operating costs of ETAF, ensuring that 100 percent of donations go directly to people affected by HIV/AIDS.

The actress says her advocacy for AIDS research and the search for a cure will continue throughout her life. Along with her work at ETAF, she also serves on the board of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

the D list David Atlanta’s weekly list of truths all gay men have come to know

10 things straight men can learn from gay men

Gender and sexuality are fluid.

Masculine and feminine aren’t mutually exclusive and can coexist in one guy.

Explore your wild side

Nothing builds confidence, not to mention skills, like trying new things. Just getting yours whambam is not cool.

No one is ‘the woman.’

When two guys have sex, both play the role of “the man.” Because they’re both men. That’s the point.

Dress for success.

You enviously mock gay and metrosexual guys because we actually are getting more positive attention.

Vulnerability is sexy.

We may openly pine for “straight-acting” mascs, but showing some emotion is a total panty dropper.

Monogamy on a spectrum.

Exploring relationships beyond strict monogamy makes us better at one-on-one commitment if we ultimately choose it.

We do objectify you.

Being objectified some of the time is OK. People want to find you sexy, so it wouldn’t kill you to hit the gym and get a haircut.

Women are people too.

She lets us in because we don’t objectify her 24-7 and actually appreciate her whole self. Try it. See also: Listening, empathy.

Butt stuff.

If you’re ignoring your prostate, you're missing out. Beyond penetration, butt stuff is mind blowing if done right.

Self-honesty.

After coming out, more than some will in a lifetime. that follows keeps

we’ve braved straight guys The courage on giving.

And one sure way to drive him away is to act jealous of other guys. His attraction will erode – not because you’re ugly, but because you’re insecure. And just as he’ll pick up on your lack of confidence, he’d also notice if you instead choose to trust him. So will the jealous bitches dishing about your relationship as if it’s any of their business. Hey, Daddy! When I was in my 20s and 30s, I had more confidence than I deserved, and it showed. As I push toward the middle of my 40s, I can’t shake feeling old, fat and ugly. Everywhere I turn are signs of ageism in the gay community, and the little Body Nazis judging each other and everybody else are killing my self worth. How can I put my mind at rest? Fortysomething: Unappealing Gay Life Years Dear FUGLY:

HEY,

ARIES (Mar. 20 – Apr. 19): Perhaps you should suspend your inhibitions for the time being and let your dreams guide you. For instance, you might try asking that guy or girl out that you keep seeing outside the coffee shop. Who knows what might happen?

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): Your surroundings are currently changing, Libra. Perhaps your circle of friends has already undergone a major change. You accept whoever comes along. You may not realize it, but your attitude is completely different now than it once was. Good for you!

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): This is the type of week you enjoy. The climate is positive and the energy is flowing. It’s as though you have a magic wand (you know you probably do). You give it a wave and - presto - the day’s tasks and chores are done!

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): You’re demystifying the concept of talent. You used to look enviously at other people and think, “I wish I had a natural ability like that.” It’s a matter of hard work, belief in oneself, and bravery in the face of risk. You can do it, too!

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): If the world collapsed today, you wouldn’t bat an eyelash. You’re perfectly content sailing along on cloud nine! The source of your bliss could be that new person in your life. Are you passionately, intensely, wonderfully in love?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 20): Are you thinking of going into business for yourself? Being self-employed doesn’t automatically mean you will have more freedom. Think about it. Base your decision on reality and not fantasy.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): You may have had some emotional disappointments lately, but this week will restore your faith in love. All you need to do is take action. You’re more likely to get results from yourself than from other people.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19): Within the next few days, you’re likely to gain access to dimensions of perception you never suspected.. Investigate what these worlds have to offer. What you learn will help you cope with your sensitivity.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): Put on your traveling shoes. Fear of the unknown may have prompted you to postpone certain trips. You claimed you were too busy, but no one really believed this, not even you. It’s silly to avoid life, go out there and get to it.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): Often fiery temperaments like yours are drawn to fight for great causes despite the better judgment of more down-to-Earth people. As a result, you have great leadership potential that may emerge this week.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): Something is currently compelling you to be more of a world citizen than usual. Comfort yourself with the knowledge that your world is simply changing and expanding. It will stabilize again on another, higher plane.

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 19): Your optimism is likely to receive a little boost this week. A memorable emotional encounter may be the source of some extra zeal. Or you may derive great satisfaction from being part of a group. The outlook is nothing but positive!

You're like Midtown's gay Donald Trump, just saying random bullshit with authority and hoping no one fact-checks you.

I get that it's easier to assume the worst, but your information is dated. Like your hair.

You can’t please everyone all the time, and you can’t please bitter drunks ever. So don’t try.

You and your drag roommate look more alike every day. #doppleganger #creepy

I didn’t understand anything until your constant flow of deep, meaningful memes fixed my life.

One question: Why are 90% of the gay men in Atlanta so mean?

Thank you for your valuable additions to every conversation. I was getting bored staying on topic.
