Being in the military prepared me for a lot of things, but not my HIV diagnosis. I found it difficult to take medication every day. Fortunately, with the help of my doctor at the VA, taking my medicine is just another part of my morning routine, brush my teeth, wash my face, and take my meds. By sticking to my medication, doctor visits and support groups, I stay healthy and happy. As a support group leader, now I’m helping others to get into their own routine.

GINGER APPRECIATION NIGHT

DINING OUT FOR LIFE

When the gay male nuns of the Atlanta Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence commit, they don’t go halfway. That’s what makes this dueling carwash and beer bust benefit a sure bet to get you going with Sisters and Studs washing your vehicles in the latest effort for another Sister to earn her wings.

Now there’s a special event for every time you’ve thought (or heard), “Hey, Red. I’ve been thinking about you all night long.” Atlanta’s newly non-smoking gay sports video bar hosts your inclinations for all the redheaded guys out there and their dedicated admirers.

Some 100 participating restaurants are ready and willing to take your order in this venerable event that dedicates a portion of every check this day to the good work at Project Open Hand. Visit their site, check the list, then eat up.

Kiiara – “Gold” You’ve probably heard “Gold” by Kiiara and didn’t realize it. The track was actually released last year on Soundcloud before an official video was created this year and took off. Imagine if Ellie Goulding, Lorde and FKA Twigs had a drunken night out on the town and woke up naked next to each other. Nine months later there was a baby... a musical genius baby. Well Kiiara’s “Gold” is that baby! Chopping and layering her words on top of each other, the song is by far the most infectious song of 2016. Do I know what she’s saying? Hell no. Does it matter? Nope. If Rihanna can make a song that nobody can understand, then Kiiara can too. Ellie Goulding – “Army” Speaking of drunken nights with Ellie Goulding, sign me up! My girl delivers again with this song dedicated to her BFF and all her fans. Let’s be honest, though: This is the perfect wedding proposal song or first dance song. With lyrics like “When I’m with you, I’m standing with an army.” Ugh! I wish I was getting married just to use this song somehow. I’ll just be over here looking at random people’s wedding photos, practicing the dance moves to my imaginary flash mob proposal. Jonas Blue – “Fast Car” Released in December of last year, this one has dominated the charts overseas and the dance charts stateside. I would have never thought that I would be shaking my junk to a Tracy Chapman song in 2016! Reworked by British producer Jonas Blue and featuring the vocals of Dakota, this jam is probably my favorite on the list.

Best songs of 2016 (so far) The first quarter of 2016 officially ended, and I can honestly say that I had higher hopes for 2016, but whatevs. I’m not mad. Did I lose all of the weight I said I’d lose for my New Year’s Resolution? Mind your own damn business. But I can say that the year is off to an amazing start for new music. Check out my running tally of the year’s best songs so far. Flume ft. Kai – “Never Be Like You” Australia and Canada decided to come together and make pure musical babies, and I dig it. Australian producer Flume and Canadian singer Kai put out this little gem, and it’s been tearing up the charts since. It already reached #1 in Australia, and it’s slowly reaching Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Top 10 chart. Zara Larsson & MNEK – “Never Forget You” Actually the song came out late in 2015, but who cares. The track is just now gaining more attention stateside, and it’s already reached No. 1 in several countries across the pond. I’ve written about MNEK and how super talented this kid is before, so it’s great to see him again. Meghan Trainor – “No” Because I’m a basic bitch at times, I can stand behind my decision to say that this is a good song. Nay! It is a great song. Sue me for liking the throwback/early-00s Britney vibe she gives off and her attempt at getting down with her bad self. Go big girl! Show everyone you can dance and still eat all the potato chips. Lays! I mean… Slays! 20 | 4.13.16

“Mark and Steve can’t really afford to go to Rio, so I assume they made careful plans on how to be economical and when to splurge. I would have to.” 3. Self-commentary What you say about other people says more about you than them. Their business is not about you, but how you gossip about them is entirely about you. People are listening, weighing how you handle it. “Mark and Steve blew all their money on a trip to Rio in a last-ditch effort to save their sinking relationship after Mark got caught cheating with Ryan again. They maxed out both credit cards and emptied their savings to make the trip.” 4. Culture swap Anecdotes make up two-thirds of human interaction. Gossip is the primary means by which people learn about the social norms when arriving in a new country, town, or group of friends, and the main way children learn.

ways gay gossip is good for you

NOBODY ADMITS THEY LIKE IT, BUT EVERYBODY DOES IT. DON’T EVEN TRY TO ACT LIKE YOU’RE IMMUNE TO THE DRAW OF GOSSIP, GIRL.

W

hether it’s our prurient interest, a lazy urge to insert ourselves into situations that aren’t about us, a misdirected inclination to “help,” or to take pleasure in a frenemy’s suffering, we’ve all engaged in gossip. Try as we might to stop it or at least curb it, changing this one behavior is as hard to break as a bad habit. But if everyone does it, is gossip actually bad? As it turns out, gossip can be positive when it’s not rumor spreading for the simple sake of meanness. The trick is to know the difference. Here’s how gossip is OK, even good for you, and how it can go from bad to downright ugly.

24 | 4.13.16

1. Idle chatter Sort of like talking about the weather, some gossip is neutral. Discussing trivial matters promotes bonding in small groups and can be a necessary component of relationships.

“If you ever want to know how our friends view each other, all you have to do is listen in on us as we dish about Mark and Steve’s trip to Rio.” 5. Self-evaluation and growth When you share a story about someone else, it’s usually because it’s significant to you in some way. Even thrilling scandals are your opportunity to evaluate how someone did, right or wrong, and learn from the example. “Mark and Steve went to Rio, and they took some risks to get there. If I keep saving my money, I can take a fabulous vacation.” Bad & Ugly Gossip Bad: If someone has told you something in confidence and you promised not to share it, you don’t have gossip, you have a secret.

“Mark and Steve went to Rio on a second honeymoon.” Ugly: Gossip is only inherently wrong when sharing it will hurt people. If 2. advice

Hey, Daddy! I can make sweet sweet love to my man like a John Legend song wants me to, but when we go to the gogo bar, my inner animal comes out. I want to play rough with my favorite stripper in the VIP room and then toss him aside like a used dinner napkin. Should I worry about my different sexual sides? Dependably Inappropriate Response To Yearnings Dear DIRTY:

HEY,

Daddy!

Like BALANCE above, there is no problem and zero shame in recognizing your different sexual sides. Since you’re not holding back from a “Madonna” to give it to a “Whore,” sounds like you’ve got a good handle on playing both sides of your coin. Anything to worry about? If you’re asking because your patterns are creating friction in your relationship or within yourself, there’s your answer. My concern would be less your penchant for go-go peen and more your inclination to use some people like objects.

Daddy

Hey, Daddy!

Daddy loves his boys. He knows the answers you need, and you’re going to get them. Reach out to him with your burning questions via our editor, mike@davidatlanta.com.

There’s a disconnect between my one-night stands and the guys I actually date. I date boys-next-door but do bad boys who nobody would ever take home to Mama.

Warning: Advice given in this column is intended for entertainment and novelty purposes. Please proceed at your own risk.

But the nice guys just don’t turn me on. I try, but end up making up excuses. I go directly to an anonymous sex spot, where I find no trouble getting up and getting off. I want to settle down with a perfect man and perfect life, but I can’t picture him as the object of my darkest desires. What can I do? – Badboys And Lovers And Not Choosing Either Dear BALANCE: You're a gay twist on the classic Madonna-Whore Complex. No, not that Madonna. Stay with me here. It centers on emotional attraction to Nice (Madonna, as in the Virgin Mary) but sexual attraction to Naughty (Whore). For guys like you, these attractions are mutually exclusive. You might feel guilty for dirty thoughts about someone you otherwise hold in high regard. Whatever the cause, you’re not the first to want a family man in the streets and a man-slut in the sheets. The first step is to accept that no one can live up to your idealized “perfect man” standar, and know that there’s something missing when you consider another man solely as a sexual “object.” The day you stop glorifying either of those impossible standards is the day you start seeing the naughty and nice in every guy. 64 | 4.13.16

More details on your gay horoscope at

Astrobarry.com by Barry Perlman.

ARIES (Mar. 21 – Apr. 19): Get ready for a subtly-sweet something special that seduces everyone into reacting more favorably to your every word and deed. Use it as encouragement to reemphasize your pursuit of that mind-expanding, perspective-shattering project.

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): You can’t control the outcome of interpersonal interactions, but maintain a careful grasp on which direction conversations veer by refusing to let incendiary remarks or red herrings spur impulsive, short-sighted responses in you.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): Feel free to speak up in the free-and-easy manner, though without expecting much obvious supportive or sympathetic response. Your disclosures won’t fall on deaf or adversarial ears, but it’s harder to identify if others are on board or opposed.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): You’ll have an enhanced capacity for sweet-talking those whose hearts and minds you seek to win. It’s an excellent time to initiate a relevant conversation and cast your bewitching language to beguile them into buying in.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): The time for talking is temporarily over. Don’t define your ideas in reactive dialogue, whether it’s their persuasiveness or your animosity that compels you. Take a few weeks of relative retreat, then move into a more welcoming interpersonal climate.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21): Reserve your playful exuberance and bold provocation for playtime. At work, recent over-the-top rhetoric must be responsibly backed by substantiating action-plans to prove this deal has legs. Expect delays.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): You’re in heightened professional good favor. Balance your upsurge in industriousness with networking and group-mind temperature taking. Be seen as a hard worker, but not so autonomous that you disregard links between your efforts and others. You’re not in this alone.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19): Steer clear of unintended conflict by qualifying your outward communications as personal opinion. Then you can goodheartedly surrender when disagreements arise. Disconnect your inner wellbeing on other people’s outcomes.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): As eager and enthused as you understandably feel, don’t expect to charm your way into a higher-up’s blessing or the keys to the kingdom. Temper your tone with calm analysis and sober-sounding reassurances so they can see you mean business.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): It’s increasingly impossible to ignore evidence about which folks do and don’t have your back. Don’t publicly say anything, but acknowledge it to yourself. Non-committally explore burgeoning affinities with unlikely allies.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): Still intending to disrupt the discontenting statusquo, you might want to consider pivoting the conversation away from any more reiterations of how you feel and talk in terms of whatever underlying principle may be at the heart of this issue.

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20): Signal your value as someone who’s ready to dive into the literal doing of deeds. It’s in contrast to those issuing edicts or theorizing about what might work. Communicate the ins and outs of what others do by actually doing it with them.

Bitch

S E S S I O N I'll start liking your selfies again when you stop giving them the alien smooth complexion of a plastic mannequin.

What’s grating is that your tone says you’re an expert, but your words say the opposite.

Is it still shade if it’s true?

If I have to pay you to get into a nightclub why do you feel the need to ask for a tip? I should get the tip! Put that tip bucket away you look dumb!

When you poke fun at someone by labeling them a bottom you don't sound clever, you sound like a homophobic asshole.

Dear Oral Bottom Anal Top, in fact I am poz AND ‘clean.’ Just like you are insulting AND rude. Buh-bye. If you don’t care what other people think, stop telling us what other people think or might think. Free your mind. When I say ‘I don't remember anything about last night,’ what I really mean is that I remember all of it and pray no one else I know does.

People who's hookup profiles are filled with what they don't want instead of what they do want.

Guys, a beard doesn’t equal a personality or a culture. Bring more to the table!
