Now what I truly hope will be my continual obsession, forever and ever amen, is the Taco Festival in Candler Park. Enjoying its first year just last month, over 18,000 fans lined up to enjoy all the different types of tacos from famous area restaurants. Of course I was the first one there demanding my tacos, very loudly. Despite the shitty thunderstorms, over 20 food trucks still managed to crate fantastic menu items for all us gringos craving their savory goodness. Who needs silverware? I’m just glad I wore stain resistant clothes and had plenty of napkins to suck the juices out later. There were the obligatory salsa lessons, various cultural performances, and of course mariachi bands. Those of us in VIP had our own tequila and margarita stations to enjoy, and I kept hoping I’d fall over dead so that my life would be indeed complete. Somehow I survived to bang out this column, so I guess I must wait for some other glorious event to die happy. Truth be told, because I don’t like to keep secrets, I bought the VIP bands so as to have access to private bathrooms. I’m not fond of festival port-o-potties, as I’m sure most of you aren’t either. Call me elitist if you must, but I like to pee without fear of diseases. The private seating was definitely a bonus, and I can’t wait to see how it might expand for next year. Why the City of Atlanta has waited this long to give us an amazing Who isn’t obsessed with tacos? They’re my favorite food group, taco festival is beyond me. They should be more often, and have even more variety. even more than pizza.
Tacos, how I love thee
In fact, some of my earliest memories of tacos involve an old Mexican restaurant that friends of my parents once owned. Their names were Juan and Maria Gonzalez, and to this day I can still smell the heated corn tortillas fresh from the fryer. They introduced me to so many new tasty dishes, and for that I will always lay my adventurous palate at their feet. At 5 years of age, I was eating avocados and tamales and all manner of different exotic spicy foods that most kids just weren’t being introduced to so early. I loved Mexican food so much, my first job was at a Taco Bell. I know it’s not “real Mexican,” but it does the job. I worked for them all during high school, and I still eat there occasionally. I will say their current food quality is vastly inferior to what it used to be, back in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Taco Bell used to make everything from scratch. Now it’s mostly “pre-made” off-site and sent back in a boil-in bag, to be reheated and served. It’s fine, but once upon a time, it used to be quite delicious.
Seriously. Every weekend, Atlanta should have amazing food festivals for fans to discover and enjoy. Change the themes to reflect the seasons, partner with local restaurants and beverage companies and put the event in sassy locations, and you’re sitting on a gold mine. . I’ve looked around, and by the look of those waistlines, there are plenty of us that love to eat, so feed us!
What are some of your local favorite Mexican restaurants as we look to celebrate Cinco de Mayo this week? Send us a note or comment Speaking of delicious tacos, Bonegarden Cantina is my favorite under this column online. local Mexican restaurant. I love their tamales more than life itself, and their cheese dip is worth bathing in. Seriously, if you’ve never eaten there, go now! Ask for the voodoo juice, and tell Tony Gowell them Tony sent you. Yes, they know me by name. Tony Gowell is a local gay man about town, exclusively writing for David Atlanta. Contact him via the magazine Alma Cocina is another awesome Mexican restaurant here in Atlanta, with your latest obsessions. If you’re half way interestif wanting something a bit more upscale. Their seasonal guacamoles ing, he might write about it, and if he doesn’t, better are the stuff dreams are made of. The crab and grapefruit guacamole luck next time! is still my favorite, and their fried avocado taco is the tits. 20 | 5.4.16

OSCAR "PAPI" VALVIDIESO
Cinco de by Mike Fleming
SYNC YOUR CINCO CALENDAR WITH THE HOLIDAY’S BIGGEST GAY PARTY, DELIVERING DJS, DRINKS, DRAG QUEENS AND DUDES FOR DAYS.
T
hat buzz you hear like freight train hurtling toward you is the month of May. If you thought sunny April was badass, gay Atlanta kicks into overdrive, and it all starts with Papi’s Cinco de Mayo on Thursday.
“As always, I wanted to give back to the larger community, but also the Latin community,” says Oscar Valdivieso, aka Papi, of Las Margaritas. “It’s very authentic and super fun for everybody.” Thursday’s fun includes the 13-piece live band Candela and DJ Seth Breezy, plus the (American) reason for the season: Cuervo Ritas, Twisters, Sangrias, Maestro Dobel Shots and beer specials. Candela delivers authentic Merenge, Bachata, Musica Nortena and more, and gay Atlanta party boys already know that Breezy delivers the beats. “We’ll have tons of Cinco t-shirts and more to remind you where you got ‘Cinco’d’,” Valvidieso says. And this is Cinco de Mayo for a Cause. Your $5 entry at Las Margaritas goes directly to the Ready 4 Hope AIDS Walk team. “We have partnered up with Ready 4 Hope for years, because we believe in what they do,” Valvidieso says. “And this year, it’s two parties benefiting them.” You read that right. Don’t you dare plan to stop your Cinco party at Las Margaritas, because Papi is just getting started. Valdivieso plans a return to the Café Con Leche Afterhours parties that rocked gay Atlanta a few years ago. As Las Marg winds down, Heretic heats things up. More? Yes, child. “Mas, mas, mas,” Valdieso says. Just head down Cheshire Bridge to the club beginning at 11 p.m. for DJs Karlitos and Emerich Sobotik, plus performances by Alissah Brooks and the diva on this page with Valvidieso, Alexia Markova. She of the La Panocha shows is ready to tear up the event. 24 | 5.4.16
GAY-O The afterparty also benefits Ready 4 Hope, and it includes a $500 Frida Kahlo Costume Contest, judged by Aaron Arzate and Amanda Garcia Cruz. Afraid of doing too much of the too-too-much and being unable to hit both parties? No worries. Papi has thought of everything. Free parking at Las Margaritas includes your free shuttle to Heretic. They’ll scoot you back and forth so you can keep the party going safely. And because gay Atlanta’s very own Papi knows that too much is never enough, and because the day-of event is on a Thursday this year, the Cinco de Mayo party becomes the Seis de Mayo party on Friday. Join Markova and the whole La Panocha crew at Club Rush to keep kicking it Latino style into the weekend. Papi’s Cinco de Mayo goes down May 5, 5 p.m. – 12 midnight at Las Margaritas, 1842 Cheshire Bridge Road NE, LasMargaritasMidtown. com. Keep the party going with Café con Leche Afterhours, 11 p.m., at Heretic, 2069 Cheshire Bridge, HereticAtlanta.com.

Taking a trip with
DJ KING ATLAS by Mike Fleming

MEET THE LOCAL DJ AND PARTY ARCHITECT WHO SAYS HE'S ON A MISSION TO SHAKE THINGS UP IN ATLANTA'S GAY NIGHTLIFE
G
rowing up in Villa Rica, Ga., wasn’t exactly nurturing to the music in the man who would become DJ King Atlas. Luckily for gay Atlanta, a string of events led him on a “fagabond adventure” and ultimately back to his early passion as a percussionist.
“So I went in a different career direction and graduated college during the recession, was laid-off right away, couldn’t find work, so I packed two bags and my tent and went on a two-year fagabond adventure around the country to re-evaluate my life.”
“Music has always been a huge part of my life,” says Atlas, who has run the decks for Tossed Salad at Burkhart’s, Legendary Children parties at Heretic, Glitz and Gurlfrandz at Mary’s, and more. “I didn’t pursue art and music after high school because those kind of careers were not encouraged where I came from.
That’s when his old music love, and a chance encounter DJing at Jake Shears’ (of Scissor Sisters) collided. Atlas ate it up, All that travel, and all of Atlanta’s and went about making a career out of it. queens, led the burgeoning music man back to Georgia – and a new name: “I view DJing as an act of serving and King Atlas. knowing that I was a part of providing folks with nights they’ll never forget is a “All of my tattoos are maps and atlases that I designed in honor of places that really awesome feeling,” he says.
30 | 5.4.16
davidatlanta.com | 31
have had a huge impact on me,” he says, “and King because there are too many queens in Atlanta.” With his moniker in tow, Atlas is now associated with the aforementioned events, as well as edgier, fringier queer parties seeking to redefine local queer nightlife, like Trashed with DJ Silk Wolf, Dumb at Felix’s and ShartThrob. “Where I most feel at home is the very gritty DIY queer underground scene,” Atlas opines. “ShartThrob is one of the parties that I am most proud of cultivating. Seriously nothing like it in Atlanta.” The next Dumb party – dubbed Classass-ified: Dumb – is set for May 7. But before you go, catch up by way of our quick Q&A. How would you describe your musical style? Queer, raunchy, dirty and cunty as fuck. My forte is balls deep, can I fuck to this, underground-disco-fag-house mixed with poppers. I love so many different styles of music, and it’s my job to cater to very diverse tastes in music, so I’m usually all over the atlas and consider myself a genre-mixing experimental free-stylist. I’m not a top 40 DJ at all. I have worked with and been mentored by some of the greatest underground queer DJs in the world, and they influence my style tremendously. If someone has never attended Dumb, how would pitch it? Dumb is a monthly ATLien spaceship crash landing dance party at Felix’s. Expect lots of fog, lasers, messy decorations (by me) swirling around sexy sweaty ATLiens getting lost in the music. In five years of DJing, Dumb is the first party I’ve ever produced, and it embodies the DIY underground style of queer dance parties that have shaped my career. It’s really… dumb. What are most people surprised to find out about you? I grew up in a very poor, very strict and very sheltered United-Pentecostal family. I was not allowed to listen to secular music, dance or watch television. I’ve always been extremely creative and 32 | 5.4.16
growing up with so little, it taught me how to make things out of nothing. That is my aesthetic: very raw and rough around the edges. What makes your party unique? Dumb is the biggest dance party at the smallest gay bar in the heart of Atlanta, making it super intimate to the point where you are forced to engage and dance with the people you are sharing space with. Parties in Midtown are amazing, but these days everything has become so big, with the best lighting, the best sound systems, big-name DJs in big venues and even bigger covers. Dumb is the complete opposite of that. It’s unique because it is hosted at the
last place you’d think to throw a huge dance party, Felix’s. This 13 year old tiny dive bar can barely fit it’s own pool table is transformed into the dance club version of itself. Dumb is a diverse celebration of Atlanta realness that brings so many gay sub-cultures together. Anything else? The city has experienced so much change in gay nightlife over the years, yet there’s so many fags dedicated to keeping it fresh and alive. Atlanta has been experiencing a renaissance in nightlife over the past several years and gaining international attention, which we should be proud of because we all did this together by believing in this amazing city.
Proudly supporting our community since 1991.

OUR 6 FAVORITE PURPLE DRESS RUN LOOKS PSYCHE YOU UP FOR THIS WEEKEND’S BARHOP WITH THE GAY RUGGERS OF ATLANTA BUCKS

ou already know that the Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club is high on our list of great things about being gay in Atlanta. The burly boys with the charity hearts of gold have already been named one of our David Heroes for 2016, and now their annual daydrinking jog through Midtown in campy half-drag continues their fundraising efforts. That’s right. The 9th annual Purple Dress Run bar hop is set for May 7. It steps off from the Hideaway and meanders through Midtown with stops at Oscars, Ten and more before landing at the Eagle for a cookout. That’s where prizes for Best Dressed, Hottest Mess, Best Team and more go out to those who don purple dresses for the event. This year’s run benefits Ready 4 Hope, and for their entry, participants receive drink tickets or bottomless beers on each stop, food specials along the way, and more rowdy fun than you can probably handle. Of course the real draw is the dresses. The Bucks don’t require you wear one, but they guarantee you’ll have more fun 1. DUDE LOOKS LIKE A LADY if you do. advice
What would need to happen before you feel ready? Where do you differ on the big four: Politics, Religion, Sex and Money? Would you be unfulfilled if you remain unmarried? Discuss the whys and wherefores. How can you be sure? You can’t, but you can enter into it more securely. Find the answer together. Hey, Daddy! I was living with a guy when the Supreme Court legalized marriage equality. We literally put on our shoes, drove downtown, and got married in our tank tops. Romantic, right? Now one of the first gay couples to marry in Georgia will be one of the first to divorce. Marriage changed everything. It ruined the guy I knew. Please tell guys not to destroy their relationships by getting married. Once Vows, Everything Ruined
HEY,
Daddy!
Dear OVER: Breaking up can be sad and frustrating, but remember that every marriage is different, and only as good as its foundation. Yours might have jumped the gun. There’s no need to rush a marriage or do it impulsively. In addition to the advice I gave UNSURE above, you can learn a lot by asking other questions, too:
Hey, Daddy!
What is your greatest failure? Biggest dream? What makes you most grateful? Who are your best friends and why? What My social feeds are packed with gay weddings. Not was your biggest crisis and how did you handle it? What just longtime couples finally able to get hitched, but makes you cry? other guys getting married for any reason, no reason and without reason. One acquaintance threw an ex- Hey, Daddy! travagant ceremony after knowing the guy six months. I’m 19 and in love. You’ve been around the block. What My boyfriend and I are taking it slower than that, but do you know now that you wish you knew at my age? after three years, we are starting to intertwine our lives and think about making it official. We don’t’ want Transfer Wisdom Into Nice Kid to make the hastey mistakes we see around us. We don’t want to hop a bandwagon, but board a forever Dear TWINK: train. How can we be sure we’re ready? Trust yourself. If you don’t, explore why and get there before Undecided Nuptials Still Uncertain, Reservations Endless you commit to someone else. Past that, relationships are learning experiences. Here are a few lessons I discovered: You marry his family as well as him; Bathroom taboos and personal space Dear UNSURE: evaporate; Both of you have to change some; Relationships are The right to marry is the right to do it like a Kardashian – works in progress and never finished. without much forethought. Sometimes it seems like all we need for truly equal marriages is an ill-advised reality show, Daddy like The Gay Bachelors. The good news is that other people’s choices have nothing to do with you and your dearly beloved. What others do is none of your business, and you can’t discern their thinking anyway, so forget them. Now there’s room in your head to focus on your own situation and ask some questions. 64 | 5.4.16

As long as your eye keeps returning to that far-off destination, don’t need to worry about scooting your butt over to it lickety-split. It’s not going anywhere. You won’t jeopardize your chance to successfully reach its golden door by proceeding at a responsible, or even cautious, pace. It’s a good time to revisit negotiations already underway.
The best way to get a handle on recent embroilments or interpersonal jumbles is to concentrate on yourself. Venus sprinkles magic dust atop your words and deeds, amplifying how agreeably folks respond to you. Still, don’t say more than you mean to or irreparably harm someone, ruin a deal or blow your cover.
Don’t bow to impulses or pressures that center on specifics of your relationship life. As alluring or infuriating as a certain interpersonal dynamic may feel, your overarching relation to that individual needn’t be pinned down right this minute. If everything’s about other people or one particular one, you can’t get yourself together.
The work you’re overseeing does not exist in a self-referential vacuum. Your relative productiveness will be assessed not by the sheer volume of finished goods, but by whether they synergistically support the wider propositions of your team, group, or social milieu. Some slower-motion self-securing measures are probably in order.
If you’re wondering what’s behind that voice whispering its soft encouragement not to get crunk, it’s your stars over bigworld responsibilities. Have as much damn fun as you want on off-time, but don’t go overboard and wind up operating at a lesser capacity, regrettably missing a chance to shine or save your own ass.
This now-narrowing pass you’re gradually squeezing through is very much about personal ethics. And what that demands is conscientious contemplation to ensure you’re not letting feelings overrun otherwise reasonable guidelines for a life wisely-led. You’re not stopping short. You’re really thinking the big issues through.

Astrobarry.com by Barry Perlman.
A slow slog through possibly heavy-but-important issues is appropriate. Critical negotiations and collaborations take time. What others snidely point to as you being ‘stubborn’ is merely a case of protecting your current standing before taking a potentially momentous next-step.
No matter your circumstances, you are not in this life alone. Don’t hurriedly empty your accounts, barter with the devil for your soul, or adopt other such drastic measures without slowing down long enough to consult others about alternative options. Devote extra time to interpersonal considerations to properly cover your bases.
Ground yourself into a steadier, bit-by-bit rhythm to balance your latest energy and enthusiasm surges with sufficient practical-mindedness. This is your ideal moment to rethink what hasn’t been working. Breathe deeply, and treasure your fragile human vessel. If you treat it like a motorized machine, it’ll break down.
Find ways to entertain, inspire and enjoy yourself during this extended pause in your outward progress.Even with all the corresponding not-sure-what’s-nexts, you’ve also got encouragement to recharge. Since you can’t ‘get anywhere else’ at the moment, find delight in what’s already here.
It’s oh-so-easy to become feverishly wrapped up in the busily-populated world, but your world starts and ends at home right now. Pointedly redirect a sizable chunk of your attention towards home base. It doesn’t mean you’re ‘running away.’ If you aren’t properly caring for yourself first, how could you effectively care about anyone else?
Be present for friends, relations and maybe even strangers to listen, advise, support, reassure or bear witness. You’re good at it, and there is a gratification from connecting. Continue to regularly aim your sightline at the goalpost, but leaning into the role of fellow human can assuage some pressure on you while offering them some of your light.

Bitch
S E S S I O N Don't mark your message urgent. I set my own priorities, thanks though.
You can stop talking now, gurl. I came to get bred not read!
When did being a man turn into belittling everyone else’s dreams? You rise up on the shoulders of others, not their backs.
SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH, tweet @BitchSessionATL or email bitch@davidatlanta.com *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)
I’m sorry daddy ostracized you, but it’s time to stop the excuses and self-sabotage and rely on yourself. Now that everyone here in Atlanta knows how abusive you are, the only date you can get is some nasty skank in Texas!
I’ve been holding back. Dismiss or talk over me one more time.
A little of me died when you left. But guess what? The rest of me didn't! I will survive!
Daddies should have more money than Twinks!
You keep moving around the country, blaming each job and each city for your failures. But the real problem is that wherever you go, there YOU are.
So your parents pay for your rent, college, and give you an allowance at 30. However, you judge people for being on government assistance. Thank god for rich parents, and Donald Trump. You Republican douchebag.
