Being in the military prepared me for a lot of things, but not my HIV diagnosis. I found it difficult to take medication every day. Fortunately, with the help of my doctor at the VA, taking my medicine is just another part of my morning routine, brush my teeth, wash my face, and take my meds. By sticking to my medication, doctor visits and support groups, I stay healthy and happy. As a support group leader, now I’m helping others to get into their own routine.

This election season has seen many a caustic statement fly across my social media. These statements are so vulgar and nasty in their condescension that I marvel at how these people maintain employment anywhere. I imagine it’s mostly Internet courage, but the world is filled with people who don’t know when to stop provoking others. Don’t be a dick to people because of their belief system. If you wouldn’t tear apart someone for being Jewish instead of Southern Baptist, why the fuck would you expect to be able to sway someone’s political views to match your own?
The true cost of politics Why are people so obsessed with their allegiances to presidential nominees? Not that supporting a candidate is a bad thing, far from it. But picking arguments and fights with people who don’t support your candidate is a very troublesome pattern I see emerging from the depths of all kinds of social media forums.
The most important thing about elections is voting. Even for your piddly small local elections. They do matter. Those cute little baby candidates grow up to be senators, governors and presidents. So it’s absolutely important to choose the candidates that best represent your values.

HOMO
Home Decor ON A DIME by Mike Fleming The same four walls are bringing you down. You’re ready for a change, but life just isn’t going to give you that right now. You’d like to move, but your lease isn’t up. You want to redecorate, but your wallet is tight. Making matters worse, you have no idea how to freshen things up without a total tear-down. Let these tips and tricks give you a new view, without putting you in the poor house. 22 | 5.18.16
GAY GALLERY
Focal points are the basis of any new room. Create one without spending a lot, or even one thin dime. Place images – your own, color copied photos, or all-black-and-white for drama –in matching or coordinating frames. And anything looks sophisticated floating between two pieces of glass. Let the wall color show through, creating the illusion of a custom mat.
LOOKING UP
Don’t forget your “fifth wall.” Put the ceiling to work by adding beams, installing a fun light fixture, or anything that draws the eye upward.
PRINCE OF POP
Maybe you’re happy with your basic pieces, and they’re too expensive to replace right now anyway. Change out or add pillows, curtains, rugs and other accessories to create a whole new color scheme.
THROW SHADE
Cast your room in a whole new light. It’s amazing how something as simple as a lampshade can make a huge difference. Recover to coordinate all the lamps in the room in one unifying shade – black is a dramatic idea – or do them all in neutral except one to put it in a new pop color.
REMNANT REALNESS
BRUSH OVER
Nothing brings a room together like a rug, but few items can be as expensive either. Consider buying two or more smaller rugs and putting them together, or ask to see the remnants at a carpet store. Cut to fit and bind the edges yourself. Creative types can mix and match remnants for their own custom design.
Every drag queen knows to never, ever underestimate the power of a good paint job. Transform any space this way, and feel free to get creative because you can always paint over it. Go bold with dark colors, or by switching to dark trim and light walls.
CONTAINED CHAOS
Organization is everything. All the pretty ideas in the world can’t be seen if you’re space is a mess. You could put workspace clutter in a plastic box, or you can scour your house or go thrifting for unexpected storage that gives your desk character.
COLLECTED WORKS
Allow your collected items to collect oohs and ahs instead of collecting dust. Maximize its impact by bringing them all together. That’s how bottles become a centerpiece, hats become wall art, and globes become knickknacks. davidatlanta.com | 23
DAPPER DRAPERY
Add trim to the edge of existing drapes, or move them up to ceiling level and add a border of contrasting fabric to make up the difference at the bottom. When you do the latter, you also help make low ceilings look higher by drawing the eye up and down.
CANVAS THE AREA
Paint inexpensive or repurposed art canvases on one color contrasting or complementing the wall. Do singles or multiples, in single or multiple colors, and voila! Instant art. And think big: consider filling the whole wall with canvases for a bigstatement backdrop.
16 CANDLES
DOUBLE TEAM
Twin beds as seating? Yes, girl. When you can’t do a sofa or just want to maximize small spaces, dual-purpose items are practical and fashionable. Never let them tell you not to sleep where you eat and play.
Clusters of candles, vases or other items give make more impact than stand-alones. Gather what you have, or thrift-shop for inexpensive additions. Think about the distinctive impacts of one-color, few-color or multi-color collections.
SIDE EYE
Think outside the box for side tables. Or, inside the box. Stack boxes – or luggage, or trays, or books, or blocks – to create a one-of-a-kind side. You an also hang shelves on the wall next to seating and use that.
BACK IT UP
IN RECOVERY
Chairs are prime candidates for recovering. Scrap fabric and a coat of paint can turn a piece of junk into a prize possession. On a larger scale, slip-cover, dye or paint old living room sofas and chairs to match.
THRIFTY BITCH
Hotel liquidators, estate and garage sales and thrift stores can be a redecorators best friend. Take the time to hunt for bargain pieces you can update with a coat of paint and new hardware. And keep your mind open to new purposes for old items. 24 | 5.18.16
Paint or paper the back of your shelves in a contrasting color to make every cubby pop. As with all of these decorating ideas, your wallet isn’t the limit; the only limit is your imagination.
BACK TO THE CLOSET
Look past boring doors as surfaces crying out for decoration. Consider them hidden canvases. Cover them with fabric. Use them as background mats to hang artwork, or paint them with your own original artistic creations. Sources: HGTV, Real Simple, Apartment Therapy, Style at Home.

Your gay guide to phone buying by Chris Vizzini
APPLE VS ANDROID? NOT THE ONLY QUESTION. GAY ATLANTA TECH GURU EXPLAINS THE INS AND OUTS OF BUYING THE RIGHT MOBILE DEVICE FOR YOU
D
uring a recent Apple vs. Android debate with friends, I realized how emotionally attached people are to their devices, specifically their cell phones. It makes sense, since we spend a good part of our days and nights with them, some more than the man in their lives. When someone shit-talks your techno-boyfriend device, you might find your chest puffing out.
you ponder a new relationship with a smartphone, you might want to poke around and ask some questions.
With two-year contracts phasing out across the industry, some buyers are just beginning to what a device actually costs. The days of paying a subsidized $300, signing a contract and getting manufacturers top quality “flagship” devices are ending or are already over. Now you see the full price, which is broken up and worked into your monthly payment.
Manufacturer’s information is a short, biased pamphlet. For more unbiased views, look to sites that review all makes and models. I like phonearena.com, pcmag. com and cnet.com. Also, wait a day after the product launch and Google the phone you like with the word “teardown.” It’s the best way for you to see what you are really getting for your money.
Research vs. Buzzwords Research is your best friend. Often, the truth is hidden by design. only from the app store. You also get a tight user experience despite the slight internals because they produce the hardware and software. With Android, you can install apps from wherever you like by an internet download. iOS usually gives frequent updates, which you’ll not find as often on Android. Androids are infinitely more customizable, and Flagship products usually use higher-quality guts. Lots of back and forth, eh? I used iPhones for many happy years, then began to get frustrated on the stern limitations of iOS. I could only change the wallpaper? My interest simply waned. Android allows me to totally change the appearance from top to bottom, change the stock apps to apps of my choosing, and tinker to my hearts delight. That’s a preference and nothing more. You guys work hard for your money. You should get the best bang. One thing is nearly certain. Take no device under 32GB of internal storage. The operating system Hardware & Software Like men, take a long look at the out- will take a chunk of space leaving you side as well as the inside before you with less than the advertised amount. commit to bring home any device and make it your bitch. That means black pixels are actually off and using no energy. If you held an LCD display next to an AMOLED display with a black background, you’d see that the AMOLED is a true black where the LCD looks black-ish. AMOLED displays translate into a punchier viewing experience with whiter whites and truer blacks. The colors tend amp up as if your image were in Technicolor, making movies and photos a blast.

emaciated in 2016. Your next option is to jump from 16GB to 64GB for $100. Sounds like good deal, right? Maybe not. It costs Apple $12 for the increase. It’s jokingly referred to as “Apple tax,” the implication of paying more money for the brand. R&D, advertising and manufacturing costs money, but there needs to be a fair balance that you can find with some fun homework.
Wait a day after a product launch and Google the phone you like with the word “teardown.”
Be cautious of buzzwords. A couple of years ago, the HTC M8 touted their “UltraPixel” camera. They sacrificed the size of the image while increasing the amount of light hitting the sensor, giving you good low light shots. The problem? With such a small photo, you had almost no margin for error. You simply could not crop without losing crisp details. Who wants fuzzy looking pictures no matter how great in low light performance after a bit of cropping? Similarly, Apple announced the “Retina Display,” saying the human eye could not detect any resolution above 326 pixels per inch based on their research. If you hold a phone with a 500+ pixel count phone next to an iPhone, you can see the difference. The truth is in your eyes. Buzzwords are made up by marketing teams in an attempt to swoon your wallet open. 30 | 5.18.16
Lastly, delve into operating systems. I won’t engage in the old debate over who gets to wear the tiara. I will say that both iOS and Android have strengths and weaknesses. With iOS, you can install

The show’s director, Jessica Holt, agrees that the script and its unique twists on tried-and-true themes are the draw. “I love how this play catapults us so fiercely into Jordan’s mind and imagination,” she says. “We really see the world through his eyes. I love how Harmon decenters the narrative tropes and conventions of the romantic comedy and shines the spotlight on the ‘gay sidekick.’”
Gay man seeks same by Jeffery Silvey
The decision to take the old standard "gay best friend" and make him the focal point of the story works in new, unexpected ways. Audiences can find connection through the universal bond of what it feels like to be unlucky in love. Some of us will also relate to the unique struggles that a sometimespromiscuous gay man faces even as he seeks monogamy. Holt describes the language of the show as being “fresh, funny, witty, and touchingly revealing,” and this point of view undoubtedly helps Harmon achieve that effect.
For his part, playwright Harmon describes the show as “two plays in one.” It deals with unrequited love as well as changes in friendships and our lives as we grow up and move on, and how we ultimately get The deliciously frothy new script is through our problems. WHAT IS
QUEER MOXIE? by Mike Fleming
QUEER MOXIE CELEBRATES THE EVOLUTION OF LGBT PERFORMANCE ART THROUGH ATLANTA ENTERTAINERS YOU ALREADY KNOW AND LOVE
are a lot of stages for drag queens, but not a lot of other artists had easy access to stage, and I was watching them kind of hustle for shows a little bit.
“We need people to know, we need them to exhale, and dance, and celebrate,” says Heather Provoncha. “That’s exactly our goal. Queer Moxie is a celebration of community, and a celebration of people, and our intentions.”
I said, “Hey, tell you what, I’ll put on a show if you guys show out.” It happened, and I basically assembled my favorite show and started to really love that. I hit record on my camera, and it literally happened that organically. I just started filming numbers.
Joyous words delivered by an Atlanta filmmaker, one of the creators and directors of Queer Moxie, a documentary that highlights the rich tapestry of Atlanta comedians, drag kings and queens, spoken word artists and burlesque dancers. The film is a glimpse behind the curtain into queer performance art from fringe to mainstream.
I just really wanted to celebrate, because I believe that first we gained the stage because it was revolutionary for gay people to take up space. Then we queered the space and started to show more than just one type of gayness, and one type of ... Then the letters continued to add.
After an Out on Film debut in rough-cut form last year, Queer Moxie officially premieres at Midtown Art Cinema on May 19. The event is shaping up to be a dazzler, in which guests can mingle with the filmmakers and subjects, hit the red carpet in a professional photo booth, bid in a a silent auction, and even catch the screening with performers featured in the film.
Queerness is really important to me. Queer is marginalized. Queer is, the world is not laid out in a straight line for you, and lots of people are queer. Production took place over the course of seven years?
Yeah, I was doing the cabaret initially, and then in 2009, after In anticipation, David Atlanta gained insider information on all looking at it, I was like, “I want to do this.” I started interthings Queer Moxie from the artistic intellectual that is Heather viewing some performers that I intentionally chose, differProvoncha. ent demographics, different performance styles, and started asking them questions. Then at that point I thought maybe it was going to be following performers when they were in How did you get the idea for Queer Moxie? performance and not. The more I entered it, and the more It’s been about seven years. I produced a cabaret called Moxie people had to say, the more there was to film, and the more Cabaret, focusing on people that I didn’t think had a stage. There I just let it follow. 38 | 5.18.16

Are you thinking beyond this project, like maybe a continuation? There’s so many that we talked about, and we’re going to sit down and make our plans. There are some fun things. Yes, we’re trying to figure out. … There’s a couple of short films. We’re talking about doing a short film of Diamond Lil, some of the legends. Maybe a web series. There’s definitely the DVD. It’s going to be so phenomenal because of all of the extra footage and the extra stuff. Nowadays everything seems to be about overcoming adversity, instead of celebrating our culture. Has the time has come for Queer Moxie? Celebration will make it safer for those who haven’t encountered it before. One of my favorite quotes has always been Audre Lorde: “It’s not our difference that divide us. It’s our inability to accept and celebrate those differences.” These differences are awesome. That’s exactly it. There are things going on that are hard, and people don’t know, and we need to combat those things, and push against those things, but we can also, while we’re doing that, have an excellent celebration Queer Moxie screens at Midtown Art Cinema, May 19 at 7:30 pm. tips to your sexiest bedroom
Getting him to the bedroom is easy. Here’s how to impress him once you get there. No, the other way. by Mike Fleming
T
ake all your great taste in fab décor and throw it out the bedroom window. The room that gay men most readily use daily for sleeping and getting dressed takes on new, arguably more important, duties when it’s time for sex. And that’s a whole new situation that comes with its own whole new set of design rules. You love lots of light in the kitchen, your penchant for stark modern black-andwhite plays well in the media room, and your displays of collectibles in the living and dining rooms are cute. Not so fast, Romeo. None of those things has a place in the bedroom of Mr. Romance, or even Mr. Right Now. The right lights, textures, colors, sights, sounds, and yes even smells, can take you from getting laid to getting it good. When it comes to boudoir style, follow these decorating tips that show off your sexiest senses front and center, without sacrificing your stylish side. 42 | 5.18.16
1. Harmony Keeping to a strict color palette is soothing. Furniture that matches, and as little as one color for walls, bed linens and accessories, or one color with sparse touches of an accent color, lets you focus on what really matters – the people in the bed. Speaking of color, consider relaxing cooler hues and avoid jolting black and/or white. 2. Cozy Textiles are your ticket to comfort, and your tactile ticket into his pants. Textures that look luxurious and feel amazing are worth it. Mix throws, upholstery and pillows. Solid colors on the curtains make a room look larger, while patterns and graphics on bedding draw the eyes to where the action is.
3. Bling Every bedroom needs a mirror anyway, but why not add sparkle with a few more. No, not on the ceiling, unless you’re into that sort of thing. Invite him to luxuriate with sophisticated mirror accents like small ones clustered together, or one large mirror leaned against a wall.
4. Best Light While a direct approach to getting him can work, indirect lighting when you get there is key. Lamps, candles and uplights are great, while can lights, spotlights and overheads are… well, not.
5. Scents and Sensibility Don’t distract him with nastiness. Move your hamper to a closet or bathroom. Put down fresh sheets. If you’re not into candles or incense, subtler touches like live plants, flowers, and rug fresheners go a long way.
6. Clean up It doesn’t sound like a decorating tip, but de-cluttering not only makes a good impression, it highlights the parts of the room you’re proudest of, and it keeps all his attention on you.

advice
I agree that you’re fixated on oral. I disagree that anal is “what every other guy wants,” as if the rest of us are all the same and you are grappling with this alien issue by yourself. You’re not. Sure, your friend and some other men just want to fuck as much as you just want to suck, but your sexual match(es) are out there – in droves. Still, as much as there is nothing wrong with having preferences, there’s no harm in adding to your roster of moves. Don’t do it for the guys; do it to expand your own horizons. “Ease into” anal climax through masturbation, when there’s no pressure to please anyone but yourself. While getting off, look at and imagine scenes of anal that give you a full view of all the manparts you desire. Over time, increase the anal and decrease the oral visuals. Hey, Daddy! I can’t cum when I’m with a guy, but I’m Geyser McFountain when I’m alone. I can’t tell you how many time I stop trying, get the guy where he’s going sexually, then hobble home over my blue balls until I can jack off in private.
HEY,
Daddy!
One night stands are really not a problem because I don’t care what they think. It’s the guys I actually date and like who are sometimes offended – or worse, sad and confused – when they can’t be part of getting me off. I can prepare for the moment all day, but when the time comes, I can’t get there. Help!
Hey, Daddy!
Dear SHOOT:
Solo Hot Orgasms Only Though
I love sex as much as the next gay. Show me a man, The good news is that you’re not completely unable to perform and right or wrong, I decide within milliseconds what at all, as with erectile dysfunction. The even-better news is that he looks like naked, whether or not I’d do him, and you can conquer this. how it would be if I did. “Ejaculatory incompetence” is like being pee shy. When someThe “how it would be” is where I run into problems. one else is looking, the well runs dry. First, relax. “Preparing I may be too specific about exactly what I want, and for the moment all day” may be psyching you out. Enjoy the sex too dismissive about what I don’t want. A former without the grand finale in mind. fuck buddy of mine who became a friend says that it’s weird how I’m only into giving oral – blowjobs, Just like I told MOUTH, the cure comes during masturbation. rim jobs, nipple biting – but just not into it when it Include stimulation in which the guy is looking right at you. comes to anal. Then increase the percentage of that imagery. Then get a fellow experimenter to jack off with you while facing away I honestly don’t care if the anal never happens, yet or blindfolded. Have him look at you once your orgasm has other guys can’t cum without penetration. I’m amazing started but not early enough to stop it. Gradually introduce at using my mouth, but why can’t I care enough about his gaze earlier in the process. It takes time, but the meananal to do what every other guy wants? time will be fun. My Own Underappreciated Technique Hindered Dear MOUTH: Don’t stress about wanting what you want. Men are remarkably visual creatures when it comes to sex. Be it dick, butt, nipples, abs, whatever, you want the part of a man you like in your face while you’re working it. 64 | 5.18.16

Don’t needlessly gamble with accomplishments that have already been banked. In other words, don’t decide to dauntlessly venture ever-onward right this very minute. This is a time to momentarily revel in the fruits of your ongoing labors. If you can’t find anything to celebrate, pause and examine why that is.
You are the garden of earthly delights. Open your arms as wide as they’ll go to those who wish to share experiences and delicious treats with you. Those who aren’t into what you bring to the table? Don’t bother exuding too strong a negative attitude toward them, or it will only serve as a beacon that actually attracts them to you.
Silence and solitude are two of your best friends now, and flesh-and-blood humans might not be the ones likeliest to give you an earnest earful of unambiguous reality. Be brave, tenacious, and spiritually self-determined enough to wisely seek that dose of enduring honesty about you and your path. Your personal truth continues to run a familiar course.
Good outcomes seem likely. Former colleagues, communities and collectives center around a cause that’s recently rekindled your interest. In addition to the obvious relational pleasures from renewed contact, there’s another potential benefit: You can also reconnect with yourself. Trace that continuous line of true selfhood to who you’ve become for some perspective.
Don’t shy away from expected participation in ‘official’ discourse with important figures. That doesn’t necessarily involve offering controversial opinions or provocative remarks, or any firm stance on anything at all. Just taking part, in itself, shows you care, and the personal investment is what’s ultimately rewarded.
Step away from the microscope. A dangerous devil is lurking in the details, threatening to convince you that entire, life-defining successes or failures are predicated on how handily you attend to one certain aspect of your life. It’s not. In fact, this singular worry of yours is infinitesimally small in the grand scheme.

More details on your gay horoscope at
Astrobarry.com by Barry Perlman.
Your tolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity in important affairs is helping you develop new levels of emotional wisdom. It’s another payoff from rallying yourself to bear with it and not take an ‘easy way out.’ Stew in it until you know its dimensions, deeply and truly. The path-forward emerges from there.
If there’s a certain something you haven’t told a certain someone but suspect you probably should, this is the time to come clean. The problematic attempt to strengthen a relationship while practicing deception-by-omission is a huge gamble. Why even invest in a relational dynamic built on partial insincerity?
Every time your attention drifts toward something you really hope to explore, jot it down in your notebook-of-brilliantideas and then get back to whatever you were already doing. Store the inspiration away in a safe place until you know whether it’s a passing whim or transformational calling.
Use this week to devote more conscious time and attention to your literal offspring or figurative “baby” of an idea or project. It’s an especially apt moment for revisiting, tweaking and toying without regard for attaining a finished product or conclusive result. It’s all about being ‘in the process’ for its own sake.
ou can only be ‘stuck’ if you’re trying to go somewhere other than where you are. Stay put for the time being. Keep to yourself, not in hiding, but as a means of soul-supportive replenishment. If you’ve been spinning on unresolved business involving family or housemates, revisit it by reaffirming the mutual fondness that’s already in place.
Remind people you’re fond of exactly why you’re so fond of them. Gestures of generosity, gratitude or grace towards these recurring characters will reaffirm your solid place in each other’s everyday existence. Speak your affections and admirations in specifics. It’ll feel wonderful for both of you, and while no cure-all, expressing fondness provides a nice foil.

I can’t wait to see the look on your face when everything you know at age 22 changes.
You’re 48, but the work you had done makes parts of you look downright 42.
