“I fought for my country. Now I’m bringing the fight to my HIV.” Reggie - Atlanta, GA Living with HIV since 1985.

As a military guy, I know how to follow orders. So when my doctor told me to start and stay in treatment, I listened. Now my treatment regimen is part of my life. That means I take my pills, I keep my medical appointments, I stay connected to support groups and I keep up with the latest education. Treatment works for me, and now I show other veterans who are HIV-positive how it can work for them.

crowd, they block out a host hotel and have pool parties from Thursday-Sunday of Gay Days. With meet ups for meals and other activities, they endorse the four Disney theme parks, and it’s always some of the most fun I’ve had at Disney World. Thursday kicks off at Animal Kingdom theme park, with the host hotel bazaar. This year, it’s at the Holiday Inn just outside Downtown Disney Springs. It’s open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. to pick up pool bands and party bracelets, and get some shopping done. I’m definitely looking forward to the new restaurant, Tiffin’s, and the new after-dark water show, “The Jungle Book.” Friday is breakfast at 1900 Park Faire, spending time with Alice, Mary and Pooh!! Then it’s off to Disney Studios for the day, before heading over to Wet-N-Wild for an awesome water park experience with an all you can eat buffet. The fat kid in me rejoices. Saturday is the main red-shirt day at Magic Kingdom, and it’s an event like no other. I somehow managed to get dining reservations at Be Our Guest and Cinderella’s Royal Table, so that should be an exciting day of things to see. I always catch new details that I’ve missed in previous visits.

Gay Days or Gay Daze?

Sunday ends things for me with a day at Epcot, but nothing says cocktail hour like drinking around the lagoon. The represented 14 different countries and areas of the world have plenty of food and beverage options to keep me happy before flying back home.

I’ve been obsessed with the “mouse house” for many years, and I can’t even count the dozens of times I’ve been there over the years. So whether or not you celebrate Gay Days or Pride in June at Disney World, or on the streets of some of the best events in the world, just embrace your community. Celebrate the diverIf you’ve never been, or even know what Gay Days at Disney is, sity, and the time and energies that those before us spent paving here’s a little background from my veteran perspective, in addi- the way for our lives today. It really is magical. tion to this issue’s official preview of One Magical Weekend, the “So long for now!” *Mickey laugh* nightlife addition to the big weekend.. Celebrating my 9th Gay Days trip this week, I find it increasingly tedious to plan out all of the different activities and dining plans for Disney World. Not to mention that there are countless group events planned with the LGBT traveler in mind over Gay Days weekend.

Way back in 1991, there were about 3,000 LGBT people that met on the first Saturday in June to celebrate Disney World together and show out for “Gay & Lesbian Day.” The restrictive name sounds archaic now, doesn’t it? It was a “red shirt” event, so people could easily identify each other – n spite of the limited technology of the time. Think about it, when did your home get its first computer? Since then, the annual event has swelled to well over 150,000 attendees, and has stretched to include a week’s worth of activities. I’m down for about 4-5 days before I am ready to come back home. Various organizers have gotten savvy about how to cater to specific portions of the community, and now there’s indeed something for everyone. In fact, I believe Walt Disney himself would be proud of the entrepreneurial stylings our community has taken to enjoy the fantastical worlds he created so many years ago. Well, maybe. The Tidal Wave parties are the ones I’ve recently been introduced to, and I love them. Really directed to the chub/bear 20 | 6.1.16

Take Cyndi’s ‘Detour’ by Mike Fleming

THE INDEFATIGABLE CYNDI LAUPER TALKS TO US ABOUT HER LATEST ALBUM, HER ATLANTA SHOW, AND HER STATUS AS A GAY ICON

M

aybe you’ve been a fan since her punky, spunky debut. Perhaps you came to the party during a prolific period of torch songs gave her singing talent its due. It’s even possible that it wasn’t until her days as a grande dame of stage, screen and civil rights advocacy that you finally took notice. Whenever it was, all that matters is that at some point, you fell in love with Cyndi Lauper. And the only thing we can think of worth celebrating more than that is an Atlanta show in which gay fans get to pack a concert hall to show her just how much. You know it’s a strong love indeed, when even noncountry music fans are listening to old Opry standards because their girl is singing them. Lauper’s latest, the aptly named Detour of country classics, has some guys learning names like Patsy Cline for the first time, and enjoying gorgeous duets between Lauper and some bigname country greats. At 62, Lauper shows no signs of stopping her trajectory of teaching fans new tricks. With the June 5 concert in Atlanta just around the corner, the singer talks with David Atlanta about the album, her career, inspiring fans to be their true selves, and what gay fans have meant to her longevity.

Why the musical “Detour” into country? was definitely a dream to have them all on “Detour.” Old country music was very popular and considered mainstream when I was growing Emmylou Harris is a friend. What do your gay fans mean to you? My gay fans have always been loyal to me, and of course I am loyal to my gay fans. The fact the gay fans always stood up for me and supported my music is something I’m very proud of and of course gay fans have helped with my longevity. They have followed me thru every creative twist and turn. What can we expect on June 5 at Symphony Hall? It’s a really fun show. I actually have some cool production. Not just a flashlight prop on this tour. I do songs from my new CD Detour, and all of my hits and a few fan faves that I had been asked to sing for years and I haven’t. Help PALS say ‘thanks’ by Jason Mietelski

GAY ATLANTA CELEBRATES PETS ARE LOVING SUPPORT’S STAUNCHEST ALLIES IN THEIR LOVE FOR MAN’S BEST FRIEND

E

veryone who shares their lives with a special furry friend knows about the bond: special moments curled up on the couch, out together at the park, and those unique times when you know in your heart that no human could possibly understand or love you like your pet does.

Unlike almost anyone else, volunteers and supporters of Pets Are Loving Support understand how important that bond can be. They help in caring for the pets of Atlantans affected by age, disabilities and critical illnesses, so that pets and owners can remain together and provide healing through their unique bond. The non-profit organization started in 1990 as a service for people living with HIV/AIDS, when providers realized that their patients’ pets needed a helping hand too. You may know them best for their raucous quarterly drag bingo games (photo), but there’s a message in that madness. To date, PALS has assisted over 1,300 client animals and currently has 50 volunteers delivering food and providing free veterinary care and transportation for more than 400 pets so that they may 30 | 6.1.16

10 ways to be truly sexy by Mike Fleming

PHYSICAL ASSETS GET A LOT OF GAY GAZES, BUT HERE’S WHAT GUYS ARE REALLY LOOKING FOR

Y

ou work hard at the gym and hard at work. You rock the latest looks and know your way around the grooming aisle. Your car, your place, all of it. You do everything “right.” So why is that guy over there getting all the second dates?

Whether you admit it or not, you already know why. It’s because while looks turn heads, it takes much more fill beds. At least, for longer than one night. Even when you have everything it takes to get his attention, how do you keep it? Everyone knows that “confidence is sexy.” But what does that mean? The following is our list of the things confident guys are actually confident about. Spoiler alert: It’s not about finances without limits or fitness beyond compare. It’s not the right convertible or condo. These are the real qualities and circumstances any gay guy can pull together, then capitalize on, to have what it takes to be truly sexy. 40 | 6.1.16

1. GET A LIFE

Knowing your skills, making a plan for the future and executing it last longer than a flash of visual stimulation.

2. DIVERSE PORTFOLIO

By all means your health and fitness are worth preserving, but the gym should be part of your life, not all of your life.

3. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

An ability to build personal relationships is more valuable than an ability to snag a person’s temporary attention over an app.

4. DEPENDENCE VS. INDEPENDENCE

Be eing too codependent nor constantly trying to prove you don’t need anybody. It’s better to have it together, but know when to ask for help. Vulnerability, not helplessness, can be sexy.

5. MODERATION

Not just for alcohol anymore, the ability to manage and not overdo all aspects of life is where it’s at – work, play, fitness, activities for self-improvement.

6. COMFORTABLE IN YOUR SKIN

When a man feels good about his body and all its imperfections, it shows. And it’s way more appealing than a perfectly sculpted pretty boy who can’t stop checking every aspect of his look.

7. UP WITH PEOPLE

Truly sexy guys don’t point out flaws in people, including themselves. They also don’t compare themselves to others, either positively or negatively. Kindness is sexy.

8. HUMOR ME

Show us a traditionally unattractive guy who makes men laugh, and we’ll show you the hottest guy in the room.

9. GENUINE ARTICLE

Happy all the time or constantly put out are constructs to hide ourselves. What’s sexy is the honesty to show the complex person underneath the outer shell.

10. SMARTY PANTS

You’ve heard that the brain is the biggest sex organ. Some clichés are true, so if stereotypes come from somewhere, let yours come from a humble show of intelligence.

advice

Hey, Daddy! I have one friend who’s always late. Always. I’ve begrudgingly grown used to it, but he recently kept a new acquaintance and I waiting nearly an hour for dinner. We were starving by the time he got there, and the guest left with a bad impression of both of us. I’ve tried talking to my friend, but he’s full of excuses. How can I get through his thick skull that late isn’t cute? So Upset Could Kill Recently Dear SUCKR: You’ve come to the right place to commiserate, but only briefly. Occasional trouble scheduling is part of life, but acceptance of his repeated behavior is on you. Stop being a doormat to his habitual tardiness.

HEY,

Daddy! Hey, Daddy!

If your friend writes me wanting to change, I’ll give him an earful about respecting people’s time, and how grown men are only as good as their word. But since you wrote, what I won’t do is help you try to fix him. You could figure out your friend’s patterns and work around them. If he’s perpetually 30, 45, 60 minutes late, factor it in and tell him an earlier start time than everyone else. If he has to wait on you once in a while, and if your description is accurate he won’t, all the better.

I think my boyfriend tells me what he thinks I want to Another option is to continue your plans without him. Warn him hear, then turns around and does whatever he wants. how it’s going to be, and stick to your word. When he shows up late and you’re wrapping dinner, he may learn over time. Turns out, you aren’t as far along into this next chapter of life as you thought. Clear out the last vestiges of unsettling-and-thus-unsettled business over the next several weeks. In the short-term, settle in right where you are and find plenty of entertainingly undemanding social encounters to happily fill your time.

As you prepare to reengage whatever relational standoffs that you took a break from, reiterate your position non-confrontationally. No matter your underlying suspicions about their viewpoint, grant the other party a clean slate. Don’t criticize or attack as if you already anticipate being challenged or rebuffed. Make an earnest effort to frame things positively.

You needn’t try very hard to impress anybody or win them over. Your natural way-of-being should do the job. Return to what you’d been earnestly working on before this whole interpersonal hullaballoo took over your attention. See what naturally emerges while you invest that ‘forceful’ energy into tangible to-dos that demand more of you.

If you’re quietly surveying possibilities while diligently meeting your day-to-day duties, rather than just working like a fiend and shutting yourself off, you begin to uncover the appearance of a magic door that leads somewhere you’d probably enjoy spending some future spare-time. Meanwhile, pick back up recent ongoing conversations to strengthen your place in a group.

Forgo overtly separating yourself from the pack, or arguing with peers, at least for the time being. You’ve still got inwardly-aimed soul-searching in store. You could unconsciously create a battle-of-wills in your social world over an issue that isn’t as contentious as it feels to you. Settle internal discontentment and keep things cool with other players.

You have a stellar chance to welcome unfamiliar characters, fresh directives, alternative strategies and additional avenues on the career and outside-world fronts. Expose yourself to new influences that can’t help but bust you out of overly rigid thinking. Willing participation in conversations helps you take personal advantage of it.

More details on your gay horoscope at

Astrobarry.com by Barry Perlman.

You’re gradually moving out of the “batting ideas around” stage, and into a place where your decisions are ready to be communicated. Lay it on the line. No truly fruitful partnership will develop unless you ask for what you need. You’ll move forward together, or accept there’s no further to go. Either way, you’ll be fine if you honor your integrity.

Your latest get-rich-quick scheme and fake-it-’til-you-make boldness is not working as effectively as you hope. The main hitch? You might not want to do the thing you’d previously convinced yourself was the most ‘sensible’ option. Slowly begin fact-finding into less-cut-and-dry agreements that would leave other options on the table.

Prepare to lose a good chunk of your recent momentum. The progress you’ve made won’t vanish, but it will be on hold as you work through some knot of unprocessed hurt, resentment or spite you didn’t untangle last time it reared its ugly head. Your most helpful tool will be your closest partner(s). Just be with them, without expectation.

You should detect a renewed zeal for that industrious buzz which accompanies constructive multi-tasking. You might even find you’re so enthusiastic about being back in the saddle, it’s hard to know which bundle of tasks to dive into first. Start with those items which don’t rely on other people’s feedback, because social alliances may shifted.

Your capacity for lighter-hearted good times is up. Make the most of it. Meanwhile, take a second-look at whether your latest professional and public strivings are getting you where you wish to go. Even in light of accolades and acknowledgments you earn, you have to really want to do this thing considering how much work is required.

Presuming you’ve kept up appearances and met expectations, you’re primed to enjoy personal-time hours off the hot seat. Pivot your attention away from brewing clashes with the establishment. You’ll see it’s not about what others are doing ‘wrong,’ but more about how you need to do what’s right for you.

Don't tell me a hookup story and not say who you were with. Your sex life is boring unless you give me gossip.

Gay men: Please stop bringing your straight lady friends to male strip bars in Atlanta. Your ruining our gay Atlanta institutions!

When you follow "You're hot" with "for a" (black guy, short guy, whatever), you're a bigoted jackwad. The end.

Why are those into leather so judgmental? Quit projecting.

Had work done, needs work done, and too much work done are not the only options, people.

Stop skipping leg day! You look like a balloon on a stick.

Pretty sure that runny omelet doesn’t qualify as “giving you life.”

Hey Drunkard. Asking straight guys if they’ve tried being gay yet sets us all back decades.

How did 'Do you want to sleep with other people?’ become a substitute for ‘I want to break up.'? Grow a pair.

If I were going to be hitting on someone, it sure wouldn't be you!
