MEN OF DAVID PARTIES

WACKEDOUT BLACKOUT: FINAL

DEEP SOUTH: CARDIO

Weeks of voting and donations come to this. See which of our guys raised the most money for Joining Hearts to be named 2016 Man of David. Help him snatch the crown at Ten, then celebrate at Heretic with DJ Tony Ruggiero (photo). Read our profiles in this issue, and make donations on our website.

A popular recurring party finds its natural stopping point, but not before one last glowing hurrah for the record books. The Bedlam party crew returns with one of its signature events one last time. Get your glow out for this blowout, and dress to make a mess with performers, blacklights, neon paints and DJ King Atlas.

The little party series that’s catching on big is back. Alternaqueers collide with the leather crowd for a dance you won’t forget. This round, welcome DJs Robert Ansley, Parker Stephens and Bryan Armalavage to the decks spinning underground house, techno, dicso and acid for your nocturnal pleasure.

Saturday, June 25 Ten, 8 p.m. • 990 Piedmont Ave. Saturday, June 25, 10:30 p.m. Heretic, 10 p.m. • 2069 Cheshire Bridge Rd • Jungle • 2115 Faulkner Road NE • davidatlanta.com/menofdavid • jungleatl.com

travis brookshire This 33-year-old from Calhoun, Georgia, is a conference services manager for IHG. He loves Country Night at Heretic, Will & Grace reruns, and goes by the nickname Big Country. He’s currently single, loves to bike and eat out, and cherishes time to travel with friends and chill with his niece and nephew. What community groups are you involved with, and what attracts you to them? I’m in my fourth year with Atlanta Pride as an Event Committee member and my second as Event Chair with For the Kid in All of Us. I’m proud of Atlanta Pride’s strides to really provide events and programs for the entire LGBTQ community. I love being part of FTK and benefiting the beneficiaries who really help underprivileged youth. What does being a Man of David mean to you? It’s such a great example of how we as individuals can really make an impact on our larger community. What attracts you to a guy? I’m a sucker for a guy who is humble and with a great sense of humor. A sexy Southern twang also helps! What is something people love to learn about you? Most people get a kick out of my stories when I worked at Disney World. Being “friends” with Goofy has some tales! What advice would you offer gay Atlanta? Get involved! There are so man outlets to let your voice be heard. Get out and make things happen!

It’s an honor to have been chosen to help others through Joining Hearts. This isn’t about me. It’s about them. What are people surprised to find out about you? I’m actually a shy guy. What is your favorite thing about living in Atlanta? I moved here from Minneapolis. I’m glad to be in a warmer climate!

This is a huge opportunity to make a difference in our community by utilizing this platform to engage others to give back. I feel a huge responsibility to use this time to make a difference. I will work tirelessly to raise as much money as possible for Joining Hearts but also raise awareness around what Joining Hearts is all about. What makes a guy attractive to you? While physical attributes certainly catch the eye, it's way more attractive to me for a person to show they have a big heart that cares for others and isn't self centered. People who are confident but not cocky and treat others with respect are extremely sexy to me. What are people surprised to learn about you? I have worked public relations at three summer Olympics and one winter Olympics. Also, I was married to a female for 10 years, who still is my best friend today. 4. Marginalized Communities Even in the most welcoming space in town, you might need a specialty place to chill. “At SFQP, we want to create space for all - especially those in communities where resources and community are hard to find. Which is why we will have Hospitality Suites! Each suite [Queer and Trans People of But what is Southern Fried Queer Pride? Here’s what you need to know. Color, Trans/Non-Binary/GNC, Youth] is suited for a specific community where activities, resources, and community will take place.” 1. Historical Significance “Built on the backbones of the Stonewall Riots, MondoHomo, queer liberation, and the radical celebration of Southern queers, There is also an Art Suite open to everyone where a public SFQP offers a platform for community artists, activists, and any- art project will be created. All of the specialty suites will be at GSU’s Langdale Hall on Saturday from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. one and everyone to hold space,” organizers say. Beginning June 23 and continuing through June 26, the event series seeks to inundate Downtown Atlanta with “queertastic dance parties, workshops, movie screenings, panels, and art showcases,” according to organizers. Multiple venues will play host to a slew of varied events.

2. Who Benefits? You do! “SFQP is a community organized and funded event. No corporate additives included. All SFQP events have a suggested $5 to $20 sliding scale door cover, however, no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. All funds raised help keep SFQP going and help the venues that host our events."

5. Right Restrooms You already know how ridiculous the national discussion about where to pee has become. By now you can also guess that SFQP says fuck that noise. All restrooms during the festival are gender neutral to create a safe space for everyone, including where to do your business. Duh.

3. Parties & Politics Southern Fried Queer Pride takes place Thursday, Friday brings Hawt Sauce, the SFQP opening dance party. The June 23 through Sunday, June 26 at various venues in Mammal Gallery is expected to pack ‘em in with DJ sets by J Downtown Atlanta. the D list David Atlanta’s weekly list of truths all gay men have come to know

10 gay men give advice to their younger selves

Don't worry about getting those 50 or 60 people to like you. Only 4 or 5 will matter.

Life really does get better as you get older, but enjoy the hell out of your youth.

Doing what you love is way more important than what you think people will say about you.

People and things can add to your happiness, but pure joy comes from within.

You got this! Just swimming, diva!!

Don't be afraid to step outside the box! There is a lot of life to live.

Don't believe what you are told, question everything and be fearless.

You are worthy of a man who feels just as lucky to have you as you do him.

Love your body as it is. Then love it enough to exercise and take care of your teeth.

keep

Don’t give up a worthwhile relationship without a fight.

advice

Hey, Daddy! I’m a doctor in a local clinic. My ethics make it pretty easy to avoid relatively regular advances from patients, but flirting with this new, hot, sexy fellow doctor is tempting me more than I'd like. Our shenanigans even have the nurses giggling behind our backs, but I can’t help myself. It’s a real rush for me just to be in the same room with him. Is it acceptable to go for it, or am I crossing a line? Do Overtures Count? Dear DOC: You can get all kinds of degrees, but it’s tougher to educate a gay man’s libido. Well, you’re back in school and this is the principal’s office.

HEY,

Daddy! Hey, Daddy!

You already crossed a line. Now it's about whether you want to stay there. Sure, you want a McSteamy to your McDreamy, and fantasies of a janitor’s closet rendezvous are hot. Still, being fodder for gossip is especially troublesome in an office where patients and staff depend on your integrity and your head in the game. This kind of tittering kid stuff not only shows your ass, but is telling of possible larger issues. Two doctors who are really interested in each other could grow up and go out for drinks. It sounds like something more is up if you’re conducting your foreplay with an audience.

Things got a little out of hand at our office happy hour. Hey, Daddy! Next thing you know, I’m sucking the chrome off this I’m a 22-year-old gay man. I started sleeping with “straight” coworker’s trailer hitch. an older coworker when I was 19. I finally quit so He texted me that weekend, and I met him to do it we could date in the open, but now he just wants a again. Come Monday, I tried to let him know it’s cool physical relationship and insists that it’s still not a and he can get it whenever he wants, but he acted like good idea to let anyone know we’re together. nothing happened. When cornered, he asked me to Pouting & Lamenting After Years respect his privacy and leave him alone. I think he’s gay, obviously, but I’m not sure how to proceed. Dear PLAY: Telling Him I’d Redo SomeTime Dear THIRST:

It’s tough to hear, but while he is relationship material for you, you are a plaything for him. While you fretted the drama of hiding, he feasted on it.

There’s nothing obvious about his sexual orientation, but you For guys like him, forbidden sex is more interesting than having everything above board. If you can’t get on the same have more on your plate than whether he’s gay or not. page, turn to your next chapter. You got drunk at a party and had sex with a coworker. Welcome to that obstacle course of hurdles and hoops. The drama should occupy both your minds for a while, and you Daddy won’t be the first or last to deal with it. Daddy loves his boys. He knows the answers you need, and It doesn’t matter if he’s gay, straight or just into good blowjobs. He already shut you down, so his proclivities are none of your business. Step away from the penis, and find a new trailer hitch to polish. Maybe one who doesn’t work with you. 72 | 6.22.16 | MEN OF DAVID 2016

you’re going to get them. Reach out to him with your burning questions via our editor, mike@davidatlanta.com. Warning: Advice given in this column is intended for entertainment and novelty purposes. Please proceed at your own risk.

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20):

The threat of inadvertently getting in deeper than you meant to looms large. Don’t be overly concerned with probing into someone else’s motives or rubbing their nose in their supposed misdoings. The intensity-seeker in you isn’t leaving any time soon, so leave this and let the chiller social-butterfly side have a moment to giggle and decompress.

Disengage from any relational friction so you can more attentively address items of economic opportunity and real-world accountability. What you need right now has little relevance to what’s going on with that other person anyway. To avoid unnecessary muddle, think about what works for you, then you’ll be better equipped to make compromises or adjustments.

Be careful not to get yourself into hot water by too freely uttering sentiments you won’t be able to totally back up. Easy connectivity and effortless rapport with others could lead you to overstep the appropriate reach of an acquaintance. Consider the longer-range, broader-context consequences of what you’re suggesting to ward off interpersonal pushback.

Your no-fucks-to-give desires are emboldened, but stay out of the fray. It doesn’t behoove you to attempt major moves or attract much attention just yet. Don’t go on public record with opinions, decisions or advice. Ride out those thoughts until at least the second half of next week, or even a bit longer just to be doubly sure of yourself.

You’re still working through certain strains of emotion that are uniquely yours, but don’t sequester yourself from what everybody else is doing. Your social affiliations and activities are a pleasant, perspective-bestowing release valve for inner pressures. Listen to tales friends tell to get to know them better and keep your mind off your own all-too-familiar narrative.

Don’t futz around with hair-splitting details that ultimately don’t matter, or other interpersonal time-sucks. You might have to circle back to such exchanges later, but a measured show of optimism now will serve your short-term interests better than a full-on spectacle. Practice healthy emotional boundaries. ‘Too many feelings’ will prove distracting.

74 | 6.22.16 | MEN OF DAVID 2016

You may hold a decent attitude toward what’s now unfolding, but it’s still on you not to contaminate your argument by blatantly attempting to spin it to serve your own interests. Dedicate extra communicative clarity to any vision-level messaging to effectively reach people. You will get the opportunity to bolster your own standing later.

You feel sure you know exactly what you want from a certain involvement, but don’t assume it’s the only desirable outcome. They may bring the inspiring kernel that reawakens your creativity. There’s an even better scenario than what you imagined, but you won’t know about it unless you ease up and leave room to see what else emerges.

Put your main people on Rebel Watch so they can hopefully keep you from doing anything too reactive, impractical or selfundermining. If you don’t have someone, fill your social calendar with lone-on-one meetups, and take on the scheduling responsibility for keeping yourself out of trouble. Too much alone time could be too damn tempting to your inner mischief-maker.

Don’t get thrown off by political in-fighting and groupdynamic grandstanding. Take note of where you stand, and how you might vocally promote that stance at a later date. This isn’t your shining occasion to deliver such a knockoutpunch statement. Make sincere peace with ‘the unknown’ and allow your methods to evolve.

That powerful breakthrough can’t come if you aren’t allowing your creative mind to freely fiddle and riff and play around with possibilities. Re-inspire yourself by tuning your feelers on the core of love – love for a particular person, an ideal, for all of humanity. This is how to connect with the currents of passion that you want saturating your efforts.

Fill your week with quiet contemplation, rest and relaxation, gatherings around the home-hearth, and an intimate focus on quality time. That is, not trying to prove a point, further a major life-change, or make any resounding philosophic declarations. Take ample space and solitude to reach an important conclusion.
