From the Editor

Autumn is a most delightful time to visit the Southern Highlands region and an ideal time to attend all of the shows and festivals happening over the coming months. You can feed your mind at the Goulburn Reader Writer Festival in March, an event featuring author talks, writing and publishing workshops, cooking demonstrations, cocktail and mocktail making, arts and crafts, and some fantastic international food. An annual ‘standout’ festival in the Southern Highlands is Brigadoon in Bundanoon. The gathering of the clans means that festivities will include a street parade, massed pipe bands, dancing, games, displays and more. The Southern Highlands Antiques and Collectables Fair is on again early in May and promises to be a drawcard for collectors, both serious and novice. Coincidently, the Collector Village will hold its annual Pumpkin Festival and Tallong will hold its Apple Day Festival in May. Both events promise to be family friendly, with lots of fun, food and entertainment. Picton will hold its annual illuminARTe event in May also. This will be a wonderful event, full of music, art, fireworks and kids entertainment. Of course our regulars, Wollongong Gallery and Gallery on Track offer much for the art and craft enthusiasts. Be sure to stay a while and enjoy the best the Highlands has to offer! Linda

Lost Goulburn Artist Rediscovered! The chance finding of Ethel’s name on a Goulburn electoral roll led local researcher, Margaret Kearns, on a journey to find her with the result being an amazing Exhibition and a wonderful illustrated biography entitled: "Coming Home to Goulburn – Celebrating the life and art of Ethel Clara Liggins"! Ethel Liggins (1886-1951) was an amazing Goulburn woman who ran an Art Studio in Goulburn where she taught painting, drawing and craft. She also ran a successful dress shop selling high-end fashions. Ethel was married to Goulburn photographer, Jim Brown, whose pictures taken at the beginning of the twentieth century provide fascinating glimpses of Goulburn’s past. The Book Launch and the Exhibition of a selection of Ethel’s artworks and memorabilia together with a collection of photographs by

Jim Brown opens at 2.00pm on Sunday 25 February and continues until 31 March. On Monday 12 March, the Gallery will be open as Margaret Kearns will be giving a talk on her re-discovering Ethel journey. Please call the Gallery in March for confirmation of the time. From Sunday 8 April to 29 April, the Gallery welcomes Kjell Goyer to its Exhibition space. Kjell, who is a talented teaching musician and guitarist, will be showcasing a number of his hand-crafted books and will open his Exhibition at 2.00pm on Sunday 8 April with a musical performance. Campbelltown & Camden

Autumn is approaching and Macarthur's festivals are coming out to play! Autumn is the season of shows and festivals in Macarthur as we celebrate diversity and recognise our agricultural roots! Ingleburn Alive starts the party on 3 March when Oxford Road in Ingleburn comes alive! The streets will be bursting with free entertainment, stalls and displays. For the more adventurous, head up to Ingleburn Public School for a free camel ride, petting zoo, rides and heaps of other activities for the kids. No festival would be complete in Macarthur without fireworks, and Ingleburn Alive won't disappoint with a spectacular fireworks display in Milton Park at 8.30pm.

The Campbelltown City Challenge Walk is back again on March 11 at the Australian Botanic Garden. Join in as a group or individual, for fun or for glory! The walk promotes health and fitness and participants can choose from the 6km fun walk, or the 11km endurance walk and enjoy the scenic surrounds, rugged spaces and manicured gardens of Macarthur's own botanic garden. If walking isn’t your thing, why not head to the Cube at Campbelltown Catholic Club also on March 11, for the annual Doll, Bear and Creative Fair. This fair has everything a craft enthusiast could need, raffles, stage displays and entertainment....

Mittagong, Bowral Moss Vale & Bundano Mittagong - the gateway

to the Southern Highlands. Mittagong township is rich in history and is known as the gateway to the Southern Highlands. The town has a number of stunning heritage buildings, art galleries, antique and craft shops. It is a great place to search for that special antique or book and enjoy good food and wine. There are hotels, cafes, restaurants, and take-aways. The RSL offers dining, entertainment, large gaming areas and even accommodation.

Bowral - home to the International Cricket Hall of Fame. Bowral is a most delightful country town situated in a valley at the foot of Mt.Gibraltar. Due to the high altitude of the Southern Highlands, the town enjoys gorgeous autumns as exotic European trees and shrubs change their colour.

The shopping precinct in Bowral has an atmosphere like that of few other country towns as it offers an eclectic variety of boutiques, bookstores, antique and craft shops, restaurants and cafes. A highlight for cricket fans is the International Cricket Hall of Fame. Outdoor sports include golf at one of the town’s excellent courses.

Moss Vale is central to

Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office, the Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of 19C architecture.

oon The Moss Vale area was once occupied by the Gundangara people, though they had disappeared by the 1870s, partly due to the loss of their hunting land to European settlers. Moss Vale has a large part of the local Industry as well it is a minor centre for agriculture. Many light and medium industries are found in and around Moss Vale.

Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a heritage charm about it. The town has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. The area is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Pumpkin Festival Celebrates 15 Years - 6 May In the spring the seed is sown and watered. Soon the plant springs from the earth and the vine takes hold and produces golden flowers that hum with busy bees. Behold the miracle of life as the fruit emerges and grows well in the summer sun. Larger and larger until it starts to ripen as the summer gives way to autumn. The leaves turn from green to gold as the days shorten and the evenings turn cool and crisp. Then comes that magic day; the first Sunday in May when it is finally time to celebrate the harvest with family and friends at the Collector Village Pumpkin Festival! Yay! So what makes this day special? Over 120 market stalls? The crazy scarecrows and the giant hay bale maze? Or is it the free stuff like the Cobb & Co coach rides, pony rides, rock climbing wall, petting zoo? Or the wonderful food, the pumpkin soup, pumpkin scones, pumpkin bread and pies?

Southern Highlands Antiques and Collectables Fair Open from 9:00am until 5:00pm Saturday 5 May and from 10:00am until 4:00pm Sunday 6 May.

Saturday 5th May and Sunday 6th May 2018 will see the Bowral Memorial Hall transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when around twenty dealers from all around the country combine for the 31st Southern Highlands Antiques Fair. Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton, this event has become a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike. Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to twenty different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both

rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector. The Southern Highlands Antiques Fair is a major fundraiser for the Bowral and District Hospital Auxiliary who will provide delicious light lunches and morning and afternoon teas throughout the weekend of the fair as well as a raffle and a stall selling delicious cakes, biscuits and jams. Admission is $10.00 for adults and includes a lucky door prize ticket. Accompanied children are free. The Bowral Memorial Hall, Bendooley St, Bowral, parallel to Bong Bong St. Plenty of parking and wheelchair access. For any further information please contact Mick Dalton on Mobile 0428 446 534. www.highlandsimag.com.au 23

Robertson

the green heart of the Highlands Robertson is the lushest

of the Southern Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market. Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside. Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies.

Each October, the Robertson Railway Station Gardens are ablaze with the most spectacular display of flowering waratahs in NSW. Stroll through the gardens any time and purchase a bunch from the Fettlers Shed. The village is delighful but as well is an ideal base from which to explore a spectacular hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands. It is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. It is within easy reach of delightful towns which are all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through little shops and galleries.

Bundanoon is Brigadoon - 7 April 41st highland gathering in Bundanoon. The Bundanoon Highland Gathering is the largest event of its kind in Australia, with 20 Pipe Bands, highland games, the Tartan Warriors, dancers, stalls and clan representatives. During the Highland Gathering this year, there will be two new musical acts which will be perform live on stage at 9am and continue their performances at the main stage during lunch and at the Fiddlers Tent. GreenJam is a charismatic group of singers and musicians dedicated to keeping the Celtic ‘craic’ alive. From rousing fiddle tunes to gentle ballads, they always create an intimate party atmosphere using acoustic instruments and lashings of energy. Hailing from a town called Cumbernauld on the outskirts of Glasgow, Patricia Kerr is a Scottish singer who is a lawyer by day and singer by night! Continuing a proud history of

Scottish songsters lighting up Sydney stages, Tricia now calls the Harbour City home. She regularly sings with GreenJam at their Sunday session at the Hero of Waterloo in Sydney as well as being lead vocalist with the proudly ageing rockers 'The Grey Zone'. The Chieftain of the Day 2018 will be Mr Warren Glase D.Ua. The decision to select Warren as Chieftain of the Day was in recognition of his outstanding long and dedicated service to Brigadoon and his commitment to the local community. He has always admired and appreciated the generosity of the local groups in working for this great community event that celebrates Scottish culture. It is the combined effort of these people that has made the Bundanoon is Brigadoon Highland Gathering, the great family event that it is today. Street Parade: 9am.
