Highlands Theatre Group presents:
Belfast Girls
18 - 27 May
THE AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE OF JAKI McCARRICK’S ‘BELFAST GIRLS’ OPENS IN MAY. ‘Sixty women from Belfast on this ship and most of ‘em I seen walk’in the streets. Weren’t the priests encouragin’ us to apply for passage? Oh they knew right well what they were sendin’ to Australia! We didn’t leave Ireland at all, ladies. Ireland spat us out!’ Set in 1850 during the devastating, Irish Potato Famine, Steven Clancy has taken the helm in directing this remarkable play for The Highlands Theatre Group. This is the first time that ‘Belfast Girls’ has been presented in Australia and HTG is one of only nine amateur theatre groups throughout the world, to be given the privilege of doing so. Between 1848 and 1851, four thousand young women left Ireland under the Orphan Immigration Scheme, hoping to escape the brutality of their lives and dreaming of a better future. Among those who set sail from Belfast on the ‘Inchinnan’, was a group of five women who quickly gained a reputation for being feisty and somewhat bawdy, with strong, independent spirits. These women were known as ‘The Belfast Girls’.
It was this strength and determination that helped them to survive the arduous, three month journey to Australia, but each carried with them, their own dark and shocking secrets of the past. As their journey nears its end, they battle with memories of past deeds and confront the reality of what their futures in this new land, may actually hold for them. This is a play you can’t afford to miss. TICKETS from $30 Opening Night/Concession $25 BOOKINGS htg.org.au Destination Southern Highlands; 4871 2888

Southern Highlands Antiques and Collectables Fair Open from 9:00am until 5:00pm Saturday 5 May and from 10:00am until 4:00pm Sunday 6 May.
Saturday 5th May and Sunday 6th May 2018 will see the Bowral Memorial Hall transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when around twenty dealers from all around the country combine for the 31st Southern Highlands Antiques Fair. Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton, this event has become a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike. Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to twenty different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both
rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector. The Southern Highlands Antiques Fair is a major fundraiser for the Bowral and District Hospital Auxiliary who will provide delicious light lunches and morning and afternoon teas throughout the weekend of the fair as well as a raffle and a stall selling delicious cakes, biscuits and jams. Admission is $10.00 for adults and includes a lucky door prize ticket. Accompanied children are free. The Bowral Memorial Hall, Bendooley St, Bowral, parallel to Bong Bong St. Plenty of parking and wheelchair access. For any further information please contact Mick Dalton on Mobile 0428 446 534. www.southernhighlandsimag.com.au 7

Mittagong, Bowral Moss Vale & Bundano Mittagong - the gateway
to the Southern Highlands. Mittagong township is rich in history and is known as the gateway to the Southern Highlands. The town has a number of stunning heritage buildings, art galleries, antique and craft shops. It is a great place to search for that special antique or book and enjoy good food and wine. There are hotels, cafes, restaurants, and take-aways. The RSL offers dining, entertainment, large gaming areas and even accommodation.
Bowral - home to the International Cricket Hall of Fame. Bowral is a most delightful country town situated in a valley at the foot of Mt.Gibraltar. Due to the high altitude of the Southern Highlands, the town enjoys gorgeous autumns as exotic European trees and shrubs change their colour.
The shopping precinct in Bowral has an atmosphere like that of few other country towns as it offers an eclectic variety of boutiques, bookstores, antique and craft shops, restaurants and cafes. A highlight for cricket fans is the International Cricket Hall of Fame. Outdoor sports include golf at one of the town’s excellent courses.
Moss Vale is central to
Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office, the Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of 19C architecture.
oon The Moss Vale area was once occupied by the Gundangara people, though they had disappeared by the 1870s, partly due to the loss of their hunting land to European settlers. Moss Vale has a large part of the local Industry as well it is a minor centre for agriculture. Many light and medium industries are found in and around Moss Vale.
Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a heritage charm about it. The town has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. The area is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Pumpkin Festival Celebrates 15 Years - 6 May In the spring the seed is sown and watered. Soon the plant springs from the earth and the vine takes hold and produces golden flowers that hum with busy bees. Behold the miracle of life as the fruit emerges and grows well in the summer sun. Larger and larger until it starts to ripen as the summer gives way to autumn. The leaves turn from green to gold as the days shorten and the evenings turn cool and crisp. Then comes that magic day; the first Sunday in May when it is finally time to celebrate the harvest with family and friends at the Collector Village Pumpkin Festival! Yay! So what makes this day special? Over 120 market stalls? The crazy scarecrows and the giant hay bale maze? Or is it the free stuff like the Cobb & Co coach rides, pony rides, rock climbing wall, petting zoo? Or the wonderful

Robertson
the green heart of the Highlands Robertson is the lushest
of the Southern Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market. Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside. Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies.
Each October, the Robertson Railway Station Gardens are ablaze with the most spectacular display of flowering waratahs in NSW. Stroll through the gardens any time and purchase a bunch from the Fettlers Shed. The village is delighful but as well is an ideal base from which to explore a spectacular hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands. It is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. It is within easy reach of delightful towns which are all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through little shops and galleries.
Fitzroy Falls, the Visitor Centre and Cafe Fitzroy Falls, in Morton National Park, offers scenery on a grand scale. Waterfalls, wildflowers, native animals, sandstone cliffs, lush rainforest gullies and sweeping views of the escarpment are all good reasons for visitors to include this area in a tour of the Southern Highlands. There are several walks to choose from: a timber boardwalk to the falls or a 7km walk into a rainforest gully. The Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre is open seven days and provides a range of information on Morton National Park and other places to visit in the area. Tourist information, maps, interpretative displays, souvenirs, local craft, annual Parks Passes and Discovery Tours (prior booking required) are available. The Falls CafĂŠ offers a selection of tasty home cooked meals or simply coffee and cake in a bush environment.
The barbecue facilities, toilets, picnic shelters, all with disabled access, provide you with an environment in which you might spend a day relaxing, walking or just enjoying the scenery. Nowra Rd, Fitzroy Falls. Open 7 days per week 9am to 5pm. Ph: (02) 4887 7270.

Set in 1850 during the devastating, Irish Potato Famine, Steven Clancy has taken the helm in directing this remarkable play for The Highlands Theatre Group. Between 1848 and 1851, four thousand
young women left Ireland under the Orphan Immigration Scheme. Among those who set sail from Belfast on the ‘Inchinnan’, was a group of five women who quickly gained a reputation for being feisty and somewhat bawdy, with strong, independent spirits. These women were known as ‘The Belfast Girls’. BOOKINGS htg.org.au Ph: 4871 2888 AnnanROMA FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL 27 May. Australian Botanic Garden.
