Halloween party

The Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce held an impromptu Halloween party at the Code Blue Café with hot snacks, candy and cold drinks for the over 30 people that showed up in costume. Those who weren’t in costume got in on the fun snacking on waffle fries and food from the kitchen. It was a great way to share with the community.

Another warming fire gone bad in Lake View Terrace

Another brushfire erupted last Saturday night at about 9:11PM in the 11000 block of W Foothill Bl. in Lake View Terrace. LAFD and LACo fire resources were brought in and 53 firefighters called a knockdown in 18 mins. Although all visible flames were extinguished , fire-fighters continued to clean up hot spots for an additional 2 hours. Brushfires are increasing around homeless camps as the temperature begins to dip. Residents are asked to be especially observant when they know camps are near their property.

Can you own your dream house with student debt? by Ed Castellanos

Did you know you can buy your dream home while paying off student loan debt? It’s true and even quite common. While student loans are factored into your debt-to-income ratio, they shouldn’t prevent you from becoming a homeowner. And fortunately, there are many programs and options available to prospective buyers, some you may not be familiar with. Here are four ways people with student loans achieve their homeownership goals: 1. Co-buying With Friends or Family Purchasing a home with a roommate, significant other or sibling allows you to combine multiple incomes to qualify for a better mortgage rate. This can help lower your monthly payment and make home maintenance more affordable. 2. Receiving Financial Gifts From Family You can also accept gift money from your parents, grandparents or other family members to put toward your home purchase. Some loan programs have a cap on how much gift money can be used, so

make sure you know the limits first. 3. Choosing Low (or No) Down Payment Loans There are many low down payment options, including FHA, HomeReady and Home Possible loans. For loans with no down payment, VA loans may be available to veterans and military members as well as USDA loans for those purchasing in rural areas. 4. Using Assistance Programs Down payment assistance programs can cover some or all of your down payment costs if you qualify. These programs vary by location, so talk with a lender to learn about potential options. Working on your credit can also help you buy a home. Pay your credit card bills on time every month, aim to pay down your debts and never let an account go into collections. It also helps to get preapproved for a mortgage so you know how much you qualify for. If you’re ready to make homeownership a reality or would like a referral to a trusted lender, get in touch today.

READING AND BOOK SIGNING Nov. 8 reading and book signing of YES, I GLOW IN THE DARK! One Mile from Three Mile Island to Fukushima and Nuclear Hotseat. It tells the true story of what it meant for local resident Libbe HaLevy to have been one mile from the 1979 nuclear accident when it happened, and the impact upon her life in the wake of that traumatic event. It’s the story of the journey taken from nuclear ignorance, through years of Post Traumatic Stress and suppression of the experience, to her current position as producer and host of Nuclear Hotseat, a weekly program on nuclear issues “from a different perspective.” Nuclear Hotseat is in its eighth year; has been downloaded in 123 countries, and is syndicated

It was her plan to begin taking half of her ex-husband’s SS at that time allowing hers to grow until she reached 70 at which time her benefit would slightly exceed half of her ex’s. Three months ago, I was diagnosed with an illness that may very well shorten my time here significantly. So, I’m thinking if we get married she would qualify for 100% of my SS after one year, which would be only four months later than when she could begin taking half her ex’s. So, I guess, in that instance she would just begin taking half of my benefit. The big question is, what happens if I pass on before we’ve been married for a year? Is she stuck then at her own reduced rate or can she go back to claim her ex’s and allow her own to grow until age 70? I was delaying collecting my own benefits until age 66 in January but began collecting in August after my diagnosis. Thanks for any insight you can offer. Signed: Providing for my Girlfriend

Is hemp CBD oil a medical miracle? There are thousands of testimonials from individuals all ages and from all walks of life whose lives are improved on a daily basis. Hemp was federally outlawed for around 50 years simply because law enforcement could not tell the difference between hemp and marijuana. This should change before the end of the year and the federal government is moving to take hemp off as a schedule 1 controlled substance. Hemp and marijuana are bred differently and have different biological attributes. There are no psychoactive properties in hemp because it has far lower levels of THC than marijuana. Although it is legal to sell hemp products in the United States, most hemp products are from overseas. Be careful what you purchase. Read the label. Make sure your CBD oil is pure. It is grown without pesticides. I use Hempworx and the label

reads pressed hemp (seed) oil and CBD rich whole hemp extract. Make sure you know where your product comes from and how the CBD oil is extracted. You don’t want a lot of fillers and other items in your CBD oil. Organic is the best way to go. What has hemp CBD oil done for me? I sleep all night, never awaken with cramps in my legs or deep pain in my legs. I do not take anything to help me sleep anymore. I do not take any pain medication for arthritis. I have completely stopped taking my allergy medicine. I have not had one asthmatic coughing fit in over four months. People compliment me on my skin and hair. CBD oil has lowered my blood pressure. I have less floaters in my eyes. I can walk without getting out of breath. Medical miracle? It is for me. For questions, call (818) 800-7997.

Dear Providing: I’m very sorry to hear of your health situation, but I applaud you for tending to your partner’s future during this difficult time. To start, I’d like to clarify that spousal benefits and survivor

benefits are two distinctly different things in Social Security. Spousal benefits refer to benefits given while both spouses are living, while survivor benefits refer to those given when one spouse predeceases the other. While you and your new wife would need to be married for at least one year for her to collect spousal benefits from you, you would only need to be married 9 months for her to be eligible for survivor benefits. The distinction, of course, is that as your spouse while you are living she’d be eligible to collect up to 50% of the benefit you’re entitled to at your full retirement age, but as your survivor (after 9 months of marriage) she’d be eligible to collect 100% of the Social Security benefit you were receiving at your death. If you and your girlfriend get married now, she loses her ability to collect only spousal benefits from her ex-spouse while you are living, because she cannot collect ex-spouse benefits while she is married. But once she is no longer married that ability is restored. So, if you were to pass before you are married for 9 months she would still have the option (because she was born before 1954) of claiming only Social Security spousal benefits on her ex-spouse’s record while allowing her own SS

retirement benefit to grow by 8% per year until she reaches age 70. At that time, she would switch to the higher benefit on her own record. So, I believe there is little or no risk to your girlfriend’s future Social Security benefits for you to get married. If your prognosis is good and you live at least the required 9 months, she can collect survivor’s benefits from your record equal to 100% of the amount you are receiving at your death. If you survive beyond one year she will be entitled to file for spousal benefits on your record and collect 50% of your FRA benefit while you are living and then switch to survivor benefits when you pass. But if your prognosis is not good and you do not survive for the required 9 months of marriage, your new wife will still have the ability (provided she has not yet filed for her own benefits) to file a “restricted application for spousal benefits only” on her living ex-husband’s Social Security record and allow her own benefit to grow. Once again, I’m so sorry to hear of your failing health, but glad to be able to provide you with some Social Security guidance and, hopefully, ease your anxiety at least on this matter. My best wishes go out to you at this difficult time.

he oldest segments of the population are also the fastest growing segments of the American labor force, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The BLS reports that younger members of the workforce have a stable, lower level of participation but the numbers of older workers – those 65 to 75 and older – are expected to increase steadily through 2024 “It’s a good thing,” says Dan Weber, president of the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. “The reason: an older workforce is

a more engaged workforce. Gallupsays that older workers are more ‘involved in and enthusiastic about their work and are more productive in their workplaces – than younger workers. People are not only living longer these days, they’re living healthier, more active lives. That, combined with the greater freedom at home that comes with reduced family obligations, makes older employees more focused on the satisfaction of a job well done.” Weber also points out that employers gain a competitive advantage by utilizing the

experience and know-how of older workers and taking advantage of the knowledge they’ve gained over the years. The Society for Human Resource Management conducted research and “found that the top three advantages of older workers, compared with other workers, are more work experience (77%), higher level of maturity/ professionalism (71%) and stronger work ethic (70%).” The SHRM reported that 92% of Human Resource professionals who partici(Continued on Page 7)

his week, in a last ditch effort to persuade voters before Election Day, President Trump made one of his most baffling false claims yet. At a rally in Nevada on Saturday, Trump announced a new 10% tax cut for the middle class that would be passed by Congress and come into effect before the midterms. This came as news to, well, everyone. Congressional leaders had no idea what Trump was talking about, there’s no bill or language drafted, and, to add to the absurdity, Congress isn’t even in session again before the election. There’s no plan,

but even if there were one, there would be no time to vote on it. This is about as blatant a falsehood as you can come up with, but it’s representative of the Republican partys approach to informing voters about their agenda in the final stretch before the midterms: lie, lie, lie. Republican members of Congress know that their agenda, cutting social programs for poor and middle-class Americans and directing billions of dollars in tax cuts to the rich, is wildly unpopular with the American people. But rather than adjust their policy platform to align with what could actually win them an election, they’ve decided

it’s easier to just tell voters they’re doing something else. Take this Trump claim that Republicans will pass a 10% tax cut for the middle class. Setting aside the fact that passing it before the election is literally impossible (Trump has already changed his story to saying it’ll be voted on after the election), we know that it’s not going to happen because Republicans already passed a comprehensive overhaul of our tax code last year, and it included virtually no tax cuts for the middle class. They rewrote the entire tax code to reflect their priorities, and it included (Continued on page 8)

Lentil Stew with Sausage Bruschetta With Crispy Eggplant BY CHEF RANDY

Wikipedia says that bruschetta is “toasted Italian bread drenched in olive oil and served typically with garlic or tomatoes. I say it is a blank canvas upon which you can add any topping of your choice. I like to serve it with a sparkling wine. The history of the bruschetta dates from the Etruscans. It is said that while occupying the land between Rome and Tuscany, they began dressing the local, salt-less bread with olive oil and baking it in woodfired ovens. Bruschetta comes from the Italian word bruscare, which means to roast over coals.

Directions: Combine cheese, cornmeal, flour, salt, and pepper in a shallow bowl. Set aside. Sprinkle both sides of each slice of eggplant with salt. Place on paper towels and set aside. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Dredge the eggplant in the cheese mixture, making sure both sides are well coated. Carefully slide the breaded eggplant into the oil and fry until browned on both sides, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer eggplant back to the paper towels to absorb excess oil.

Ingredients: • ½ cup Asiago cheese (finely grated) Toast the bread until golden. Place toast • ½ cup cornmeal (ground fine) on a baking sheet. Divided the minced • ½cup flour garlic evenly between the pieces of toast. • ½ teaspoon salt Drizzle one teaspoon of olive oil over each • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper piece and place a slice of fried eggplant on • 3 Japanese eggplant (sliced lengthwise top. sic lentil recipe is simple and easy to prepare. Just put all the ingredients into a slow cooker and the chow down 4 hours later. The vegetarian sausage adds depth and texture for a hearty stew. It’s especially good on a cold winter night. Ingredients:

to ½-inch pieces) 2 cups sweet corn kernels 3 stalks celery (thinly sliced) 3 carrots (cut into one-inch pieces) 1 medium onion (chopped) 15-ounce can diced tomatoes (including liquid) 2 cloves garlic (minced)

Plug in your slow cooker and set the heat to high. Rinse the lentils and cull out small stones and debris. Add the lentils and all other ingredients to the crockpot. Cook for 4 hours. This makes a meal all by itself but is even better and more nutritious when accompanied by rice.

over a trillion dollars in tax cuts for corporations, billions of dollars in cuts for wealthy individuals, a huge tax cut for the heirs of multimillion dollar fortunes, and crumbs for the middle class. In fact, a whopping 83% of the bill’s $1.9 trillion in tax cuts are projected to go to the top 1% of the population. If Republicans really wanted to cut taxes for the middle class, why didn’t they do it when they were handing out tax cuts to the rich? It’s because they don’t actually want to cut taxes for the middle class, they just want voters to think they will. Their shamelessness may start with tax cuts, but it gets even worse with health care.

In response to the growing popularity of Medicare for All as an alternative to our absurdly expensive and bloated private healthcare system, Speaker Paul Ryan and his colleagues across the country try to call themselves champions of Medicare who will fight to protect the program from the socialist Democrats hellbent on bankrupting the program entirely by refusing to cut benefits. Never mind that Republican politicians have tried again and again to drastically limit Medicare spending. This year’s House Republican budget alone, their vision for what government spending should look like, included over $500 billion in cuts to

Medicare and $1.5 trillion in cuts to Medicaid. For all of their talk of fiscal responsibility and cutting the deficit, Republicans in Congress passed a tax bill that will add nearly $2 trillion to the federal debt over the next decade. Now that it’s passed, however, they’re right back to using that debt as an excuse to cut social programs that millions of Americans rely on. That’s not fiscal responsibilitY, that is fiscal shortsightedness. And it shows yet again how little Republicans in Congress can be trusted to follow through on what they claim to believe. promise to be better, but never follows through. After a certain point, you learn to stop believing them. It’s time to do the same for the Republican members of congress. For the single mother desperately hoping for a tax cut in order to afford better childcare, or for the child living in poverty who won’t be able to go to the doctor because of Medicaid cuts, actions speak louder than words. Republicans can talk all they want about how much they care about helping working

families, but they’ve had complete control of the government for two years and have done nothing but help the rich get richer. Until their actual policies start doing the talking, they’ve shown that they have no business earning your vote. So when you’re in the ballot booth on November 6th, remember to vote based on what your member of Congress has actually done for you and your community, not what they’re promising to do.
