Lift and Separate An article in USA Today reported that Playtex has come out with a more contemporary line of bras in hopes of gaining younger consumers and increasing sales. Recently, I went bra shopping and was surprised at the latest styles. One style was memory foam. Is this really a good idea for the woman who has to lift her breast up off the floor before she puts on her bra? No woman wants to put on a bra and have it fall to the floor for her to step into. A bra should lift them up so no woman walks around hunched over all day. It’s bad for the back. I have a memory foam mattress which is great as it draws the invisible line down the beds center, keeping hubby on his side of the bed. Memory foam for a bed is good. Memory foam for a

bra is not good. One bra had a tag which read ‘Funny Shapes Fixed.’ Would advertisers would be so cruel and heartless to put such a label on a package of men’s underwear? There was a mother and daughter in the fitting room next to me and the daughter was trying on bras. I know because I heard the mother using phrases like, “It won’t give much support,” and “You need more coverage.” The girl and I emerged from the dressing room at the same time. I looked at her and thought… she’s young. Memory foam bras were made for her. I paid for my bras and the physical support guaranteed and then went home to get emotional support from my husband. Those memory foam bras can leave an emotional scar.

It’s summertime and the music is flowing at the Pasadena POPS. The new season has opened with Michael Feinstein at the helm amidst the screeching of the peacocks and the tranquility of the midnight blue nights. Last Saturday I had the pleasure of taking a few guests to the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia for the opening season blast of the Big Band Era. At first I had wondered if Feinstein could fill the shoes of the incredible Marvin Hamlisch when he passed away unexpectedly in 2012 but those fears are gone. Not only is he a great conductor, but Feinstein is also a great singer. Next month will be a tribute to the late Frank Sinatra with Feinstein as a solo singer. What I didn’t know, was that Feinstein will also be performing in three out-of-state concerts in Ohio, Indiana and Rhode Island. Now that’s a “traveling man.”

Michael, Marilyn And Michael make quite a program. I knew that something great was up when I found all the parking lots full. As I was checking in, you could feel the excitement of the mixedage concert-goers. It was all because of the Big Band Era presentation that included Glen Millers “Pennsylvania 6-5000” that just happened to be the phone number of the Pennsylvania Hotel where Glen Miller performed. One of the really fun things about the Pasadena POPS is the historical information that

is presented that explains how the music was written. Music from legendary greats such as Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Less Brown and Harry James filled the night and brought back memories of growing up with these “black and white” TV shows. Saturday’s soloist performers were cabaret singer Marilyn Maye and Michael Andrew who belted out these old time oldies. It was truly a “something for everyone” event. See you there next month.

I get two kinds of comments about our news coverage. “Your papers a rag filled with lies!” goes one, and "Thank You for the paper, I run out to get it every other week!” Now that covers both ends of the spectrum. The first is usually from mentally challenged kids that act like parrots and spew out others ideas, and the second group are those that have matured and know what a job it is putting out a local newspaper. What’s frustrating is that things happen so fast here and by the time it’s reported, people have already forgotten it happened. But I guess that happens everywhere. Some wag once said “..for such a small community, we have an abundance of newspapers.” And he was right, sort-of. The Foothills Paper comes out bi-weekly and tries to cover the most pertinent news events that happened. It has the Facebook site that posts daily what’s going on. If it miss-

es something, there is a good possibility that one can find it in the other newsletters on the street. Yes boys and girls, we have an information overload. I just wish that there were more people that would stop sitting on the sidelines and actually get involved with making our community a great place to live. Right now, we have a small group of people on the Neighborhood Council doing everything they can to beautify our town and make it safe. And they’re getting burnt out. I’ve watched the decline of our “service clubs” and nothing’s come to replace them. People are getting old. People are getting jaded. It’s time for some old fashioned fun again. I was talking to STNC president Mark Siegel the other day about having a movie in the park. Or an old fashioned street faire. Or maybe just a community gathering of the church choirs. The possibilities are endless. And they all involve getting people to-

VIEW

ROCK gether. Yes, we have problems here, but if we’d just slow down a minute we’d stop most of our problems and of course the accidents. And we’d have a moment to actually explore our town and all its hidden treasures. Have you looked at the broken sidewalks we have all over town? Have you seen the trash blowing in the dust of Foothill Boulevard? Have you seen the gawd-awful dilapidated liquor store on Commerce? It’s things like these that make us look bad and give us the feeling of frustration. We don’t

need The City to take care of us, we need to do that ourselves. I see our local heroes picking up pieces of trash as they go for their daily walks. I see people hiking our trails and I see people sitting at Starbucks. What I don’t see is people sitting in the parks or walking up Commerce Avenue. And that’s the key. We need to have people friendly events like the coming 4th of July parade and fireworks. It’s time we slowed down and begin to enjoy what we’ve got and when frustrated with the way things are, to quit saying,“It’s The Water!”

Home Sweet Home No More Dear Editor, I know you have a handle on the homeless issues here, bu what is happening with the new city rules allowing removal of personal property with only a 24-hour notice? The law used to be 72 hours and that gave us the chance to get out of jail, get back to town and reclaim what we

left here. Now that has been changed. Does this new set of rules include the Big-T? Whatever happened to the city creating more low-cost housing? All I see are more mansions being built and the rents are going up everywhere. Where are we supposed to go, and more inportantly,

where can we go that is safe? I am so tired of these dopers stealing everything they can get their hands on, and physically assaulting anyone in their path. This used to be a friendly place to live in, but now we are harassed not only by the community, the police and transients stealing our stuff, but now we are

harassed by the hard-core dopers that are giving everybody here a bad name. Is there any way that you can set up the Safe Haven Camps again? At least we had a safe place to sleep and the offer of a job when we’re sober. God bless you, Doc, for all you’ve done for us. Billy D.

Saddles For Soldiers Event

Over 100 community members enjoyed the BBQ fundraiser. Last week, the Shadow Hills Riding Club under the direction of Johnny Higginson, held a BBQ fundraiser for the Saddles for Soldiers (SFS) program developed to assist disabled US Veterans. Using grass fed meats donated by Harmony Farms, everybody had a great time. This program which is directed by Casey Gray is offered to all military personnel who live with emotional or physical disabilities and their families. SFS utilizes a holistic approach in order to reach its main, long-term goal,

the reduction of suicide for veterans. The short-term goals are: Reintegration into society, • Learning new skills, • Animal/human bond, • Emotional stability, • A safe, fun environment, • Substance abuse recovery, • New experiences. In doing a service for those who served, the costs are FREE. For more information, please call or visit www. SaddlesforSoldiers.org For more information,, please email: Info@SaddlesForSoldiers.org.

It was almost one year ago that the trailer storage yard was accidently set afire by a mechanic working on his truck. Because of the rugged landscape, water dropping helicopters saturated the area while ground forces contained the fire to the top of the storage area. No trailers were damaged in this fire. In 2012, when Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) introduced AB 1658 to create the California Legacy License Plate Program, he wanted to do something nice for those who preserve California’s classic-car heritage. Such enthusiasts often view Sacramento as the source of pesky regulations. But even peskier is the fact that after completing a full restoration of that classic Mustang, a car owner had to affix a seven-digit, bright-white, out-of-period license plate on it. Today, the DMV announced that production of California’s historic black plates has finally begun, and those who ordered them via the Legacy License Plate Program will begin receiving

savings both dollar-wise and personnel.” Another issue is concern for the environment. It is expected that although the LACCD will be centralized by the end of 2016, the changeover to environmentally friendly campuses won’t be finished until 2020. At that point, the entire district will be energy self-sufficient. Currently, advanced technology is being installed and used to heat, cool and light all their

buildings. When completed, this will virtually eliminate dependence on fossil fuel generated power and generate their own power using solar, wind, fuel cell, micro turbine and other innovative sources. This project is well underway with some colleges already generating a significant amount of their power requirements. All of these state-of-the-art power generating and distribution facilities will also serve as

part of my life learning and working to bring my skill level to a higher degree only to realize that in today’s art environment, I’ve been training and working to bring work to a world that doesn’t care or understand. It has lost its ability to discern art from hype. Worse yet society eliminated art training and teaching from the schools. We forgot how art affects many of the other sciences we think more important. How having art in your life can bring you closer to what really matters in your family and your life. Looking back, I see now I’ve been dwelling in the past. My artwork reflects the past. Admittedly, I’ve not kept pace with the new trends. I don’t try new styles. As a result, my work doesn’t hang on the walls of everyman. Many see it as old, dated, uninteresting. I can’t complain about that. My work needs knowledge and feeling from the viewer. It needs those who understand what art expresses. It needs those who appreciates another’s’ point of view of the world. It needs those who have feeling and an appreciation for life outside of everyday issues. It needs people with imagination and a history of the art that came before. It needs people who have lived and have vision to see the thought and emotion that went into it. It needs people who understand that when they buy art, they enrich their lives in so many ways. Foothills Pet Page Smelling Assaults

Pets And Distracted Driving With busy summer travel season right around the corner, many families are planning to hit the road with their families - and that of course, means their four-legged family members too. To ensure safe travels for everyone it’s important to take heed of a very real pet travel safety issue - pets and distracted driving. When we think of distracted driving, the typical “culprits”

that come to mind include; texting, eating, applying makeup, chatting on the phone, or even daydreaming. However, we seldom consider that traveling with an unsecured pet is a very real and dangerous distraction. AAA in conjunction with Kurgo conducted a survey of people who often drive with their pets. The survey showed that a whopping 64 percent of pet parents partake

By the way, do you know why I like to eat at 7-Eleven? Because of their motto: Our Food Will Kill You Just a Wee Bit Slower Than AM-PM Food. Hey, that’s good enough for me. Anyway, I get my Styrofoam cup of Brazilian bold coffee and I take it out to the car and I put it on the closed cup holder area. Yes, usually I have the cup holder lid open and I put the coffee in the cup holder. Not that day. I get in the car and I turn to tell Archie that I still think he’s a sumbitch, and I nick the edge of the cup, and it falls on my lap. And I spill some lava java on my pants and my thigh inside my pants. Holy scorched skin. That was hot. But it was not over. As I am picking up the coffee cup I knock the lid off and all the rest of the coffee spills on my inadequately Polyestercovered flesh. I let out this murderous scream. A really loud urgent scream. Nobody responded. (I think they thought I was just eating the food.)Archie just looked at me and sniffed his own butt. I jump out of the car and brush off the coffee that see Smelling, page 9

Angeles City limits where off-roading on motorcycles or vehicles is legal. But that doesn’t stop them from trying their luck at evading the LAPD and the Angeles National Forest police. Of major concern is the amount of new scrub brush that has sprung up because of the recent rains. It only takes one hot exhaust pipe or spark to set the Big-T afire. On the maps, these areas are called mountain fire districts and bringing a motor vehicle into them is a misdemeanor

that carries a minimum $330 fine. Police can also impound vehicles and jail violators for repeated offenses. Illegal dumping or igniting of fires will bring stiffer penalties. This is not a new LAPD Traffic unit as there has been an off-road unit in service since the 1970s. The difference is that in past years, officers wore blue jeans and off-road motorcycles. Now they are looking professional and intimidating in their professional racing and safety equipment.

The six motorcycles staged on Commerce Ave. with their support vehicle can respond within 30 minutes to any call of dangerous activity in the Big-T. Talk about the “Lone Ranger”, when pursuing a scofflaw in the river valleys, there is no back-up, they have to use tact and common sense to get their job done. Unlike the motorcycle riders on our local streets, the off-roaders tend to be more like professional racers that will make a run for it rather than not. “We get calls from Lake

View Terrace and Riverwood Ranch” said one officer, and if it involves the possibility of damage to the area or causing a fire, we’re on it.” If we can see a dust cloud coming off a trail, we’ll work out a strategy on how to cut them off and go get them. If needed, we can call in the helicopter ‘Eyes in the sky,’” he said. Even if they don’t catch them all, just their presence is enough to deter some of them. Signs are posted, and the LAPD is there waiting – perhaps for you?

how an unsecured pet can be a distraction while driving. Some pets may become anxious or excited causing them to jump around or bark while in the vehicle. Additionally, a happy and loving pet may just want to be near you and crawl on your lap while driving. Oftentimes, pets can be frightened and there is always an element of unpredictability with any animal. When looking for comfort dogs and cats may naturally opt to be near you and add to the possible perils caused by these distractions.

Properly securing your pet in your vehicle is not only about alleviating this potential driving distraction that could cause an accident. It is also a proactive approach should there be an accident or sudden stop - even a fender bender can injure an unsecured pet. We wear seatbelts for our safety in case of an accident and should take the same care to secure our pets. A pet that is not restrained properly in a vehicle can be seriously harmed or even killed if thrown from a vehicle. Airbags can go off and injure

a pet in your lap. In the event of an accident, frightened pets can easily escape from a vehicle and run off. Further, a pet that is not properly secured may not only be harmed but could also put others in danger through the shear force of any impact from an accident. Ensuring your pet is safe while traveling in your vehicle means finding the pet safety restraint that is right for him. Options include pet seat belts, pet car seats, travel crates, and vehicle pet barriers. Planning to have the right pet safety restraint for your trip will not

only keep you and your pet safe but also offer you peace of mind and take one more distraction away. About the Author Kim Salerno is the President & Founder of TripsWithPets.com. Drugs, from pg. 1 that invites children’s play. A couple of kick balls left behind would suggest children do make their way to play through the gaping hole in the fencing or a portion long ago trampled down. A quick walk in the field quickly reveals the illicit activities dusk invites. Littered amongst the wild poppy flowers are used syringes, burned cooking spoons, broken alcohol bottles, and huffing materials. The bright colors scattered across the field are not another species of wild flowers. The purple, blue, yellow and

orange splattering of color are discarded plastic marijuana containers strewn about with lighters and cigarette butts. A propane tank here and there, along with construction debris left just about everywhere. This fine culture continues with graffiti on the back block wall tagged “Tooner-ville” in huge ugly lettering. The weekends are always the worse, according to Mr. Richard. The lot serves as a meeting place for drunken fights, sometimes with knives and machetes with obscenities filling the night air. The police response time was two hours this last weekend. Mr.

Richard is frustrated with what has happened to his neighborhood. The police recommended that he move as an answer to the problems that seem to have no solution. This vacant lot and the surrounding area serves as a dumping ground for discarded furniture, toilets and every type of trash imaginable. Often the items are placed in giant heaps around the fire hydrants making access nearly impossible especially with cars parked in front, behind and on the side of the two hydrants on that block. With bleeding hands Mr. Richards showed me his work

that morning. To keep the hydrant accessible he placed boulders around one of the hydrants to prevent parking there. Earlier that day, the Sanitation Department trucks hauled away some of the bulky items but left some behind because not every item was listed for pick up as required. Mr. Richard has spent much time trying to keep his neighborhood clean and safe for everyone. He feels he is on his own for the most part as he explained why the sanitation trucks left lots of trash behind. Another problem on Samoa is the lack of parking which

causes tension amongst neighbors. The reason for this, he explains is because many of the apartment buildings do not offer adequate parking. Also, many apartment managers turn a blind eye to multiple families living in each apartment. Mr. Richard is frustrated and sad to see his neighborhood becoming a scary place to live. Friends of his and even his girlfriend will not visit him once the sun goes down and the partying begins. Part of his frustration and anger is having so many different divisions to call within the City of LA for services, which he believes is failing him.
