Times Are Tough — But The Fight Club Makes You Tougher by

Karen Perdue

The Sunland Fighting Club has been a wonderful addition to our community. Do you wonder what is within the walls of the Club? This is the building with the beautiful, powerful mural of MMA legends Ronda Rousey and Floyd Mayweather painted of the side of 8461 Foothill Boulevard. Within its walls are classes in boxing, cardio, kickboxing, judo, and mixed martial arts. Under the guidance and watchful eyes of Sensei Hovik Tadevosyan and Karen Nahapetyan, students are taught concentration, self defense, discipline, confidence and respect for all see Fight Club, page 9

In the past month, we’ve had four major brush fires, and the fire season has just started in Southern California. I had just gotten over the smoke and soot of the Calabasas fire when we had another fire in the Big

Tujunga Canyon on Monday and Hansen Dam on Tuesday. All of the fires were caused by humans. Two of them were from people hitting a power pole with their respective trucks on the Old Topanga Road, and the Alpine Way fire was caused by illesee Hot Times in S-T, page ?

Treat a Burn Be It From Fireworks or Brushfire by

Sam Samalin, PA-C

Patients have asked what they should do if they or their children get burned. Every situation is different but they all have one thing in common: Someone got injured. Below, I have presented the most common questions and their respective answers. What is the first thing I should do if burned? The first thing you should do if a burn occurs and the most important thing is make sure it is clean and dry. In all cases you should be able to use a mild soap and lukewarm water to clean and sanitize the wound. Patients ask “Are topical ointments recommended?” The use of Neosporin or other topical ointment isn’t necessarily required in all situations. Sometimes, using it excessively can keep the wound moist and can actually delay the healing process to some degree. If you initially cleaned the wound and can keep it clean and dry, you may not need an antibiotic ointment at all. How can I manage the pain

This has been quite a month here in our little vortex. The new neighborhood council board has taken over and are finding that it isn’t as easy as they thought it would be. I’m looking forward to seeing how they pull it together. Things have been pretty hectic. With four brush fires one after another, we’ve been able to test out our new communications gear. Some worked, some failed. But we found out now and not when we’re involved with a major fire. And that brings up a point. Is your home fire safe? One of the simplest things you can do is make sure that your roof is free from debris that could catch fire from flying embers. Sometimes the simplest things are those we forget first. Last week’s Alpine Way fire has been reported as being set by two young men with illegal fireworks. The quick response of

the LAFD, L.A. County Fire and ANF crews made sure that the houses were protected — even to the point of having water drops made on them. We sure are getting a lot of practice. On the street scene, local businesses have been targeted by a “lone wolf” sign nazi. Great shades of the Cleghorn machine, an older woman who took offense to certain business signs, filed complaints with Building & Safety. Now that isn’t very businessfriendly. One of the problems we have here is that if people get upset, they call the authorities instead of talking to the people involved. Over the years here, I’ve come to the conclusion that only 0.01% of the population are causing 99% of the business problems here. In going through our archives, I’ve seen how many small businesses have been destroyed

by certain people. And someone is keeping a tally of that. This year’s Rotary Club 4th of July parade is shaping up pretty good. More local businesses are telling me that they will be in it. NOW THAT’S THE SPIRIT! The parade is the largest event we have here and the most fun. And it’s all done by volunteers. This is a family event for everybody. (There is a parade application on page 5.) If you want to do something with your family that you have never done before – Sign up and come play on Foothill Boulevard. It’s something that your family will remember forever. Oh, and don’t forget that at the end of it are the fire trucks spraying water so that everyone that was in the sun can cool off. And yes, boys and girls — then even you can smile and say, IT’S THE WATER!

ROCK And remember: we have the 4th of July coming up and with it, the wonderful parade that the Rotary Club runs — ALL WITH VOLUNTEERS! And this year’s slogan is “Celebrating Our Volunteers!” Memorial Day was one of the largest tht we’ve had in years. Al Timons brought over a marble eagle that was mounted on the War Memorial.

Bob Garver

Should I even bother getting mad at this movie for being garbage? The whole “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise has been garbage since the 1980s. The movies and cartoons have never strived to be anything more than toy commercials, and parents hate the toys because they’re so violent. Expectations are so low that it’s virtually impossible for “Out of the Shadows” to disappoint — it can only fall in line. Larry and Ray listen closely to their to single sideband radio. Yin/Yang I greatly believe in the Yin/ Yang theory. This is an Asian theology which teaches balance in life makes all things plausible and enjoyable. There is a time for everything and everything has a time. We need work as well as play activity and rest. As artists, we all know this to be true. There is a time to think what to paint as well as time to create work. One without the other leads invariably to mediocrity and confusion, which we are drowning in today; politically as well as socially. Society is experiencing the results of too much work, too much drive, too much ambition. This is why the world is in the state it is in now. Every day we are being informed, in newspapers and on television, that we need more of everything. We can’t effectively handle what we have now. It saddens me when I read the newspapers or watch broadcasts designed to obfuscate information. It is getting harder to know the good guys from the bad guys. Americans work more hours than any most other cultures on earth including the Japanese. We happily give our employers 60 to 90 hours a week without any objection. We won’t need despots pushing us in the coming future; we will do it all by ourselves. We have already lost the fundamental beliefs in a Yin/ Yang theory. Success, money, fame and wealth have become the catchwords in everything we do. We are no longer rewarded to perform our jobs

for the love of it, for the pure pleasure and satisfaction, for the truth of the process. The one truth in my life is my art. It is the one place I can still strive for a truth. It is the one place in which I seek the truth; the one constant. It’s hard to lie in painting. If you are an artist worth your salt, there is no faking it and you know when painting is a lie. True, artists have painted lies (propaganda) throughout history, but they are obviously lies which can be picked up easily and recognized as such by those who look. Great works tell the truth. Examples of such truth are the paintings “Ecstasy of Saint Teresa” by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, “Guernica” by Pablo Picasso, “May 3rd, 1808” by Goya and not the least of which was “Conspiracy of Batavians under Claudius” by Rembrandt. There are many more, most of which have lost meaning for us through time and neglect. These paintings are not household images I know. When you see them, you will understand. Art holds the possibility to heal, raise us up, open our eyes, and connect us to the sublime, to soothe us and bring comfort and offer us truth. If we encourage art, offer more teaching and knowledge, allow it back into our schools and place it at the forefront of American thinking, we can use it to restore positive reasons for being and rediscover the Yin Yang of life: the balance in nature we have lost.

Putting The Brakes on Pet Car Sickness

Much like humans, dogs and puppies can also experience a feeling of illness while on car trips. This car sickness can make pet travel, whether short or long, quite an ordeal for dogs and their families. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help your dog in the car. The most common reasons for car sickness in dogs are: •The ear structures used for balance aren’t fully developed in puppies. This can cause motion sickness. Fortunately, many dogs will outgrow car sickness. • Stress can also add to travel sickness. For example, if your dog has only been in the

car to go to the vet, he may make himself sick from the worry and apprehension of seeing the vet. • If your dog has been nauseous the first few times traveling in the car as a puppy, he may have conditioned himself to see car travel as a time when he will get sick. You can look for some common signs of car sickness in your pet, such as: •Inactivity •Restlessness •Excessive Yawning •Whining •Hyper Salivation (drooling) •Vomiting

Typically symptoms will less movement. A hot, stuffy ride can make car sickness worse for your dog. • Toys may help distract and entertain a high-strung dog. • Taking frequent potty breaks may also help. • Exercise before getting in the car to travel. 2. I can say for Shredder. There’s a dime-a-dozen “saving the world” plot in play, but there’s also a storyline about the Turtles discovering a serum that might turn them human. They disagree on whether or not to use it or even let each other know about it. This leads to dissention between the brothers and they blow a major mission because of it. Or at least they’re supposed to. This movie is so poorly thought-out that the writers forget to have them not get along on the mission. Leonardo says “Nice teamwork” at the end of it and it

took me a while to realize it was supposed to be sarcastic. It could genuinely apply to the preceding sequence, even if they did come out on the losing end. The movie is filled with CGI, from the Turtles themselves to the action sequences to food. The special effects are about as lousy as everything else in this movie. They’re cheap, they’re unconvincing, they’re ugly, the characters look weird at certain angles. The nicest thing I can say about them is that they’re consistent and plentiful, so at times you get the im-

Father’s Day and Me

Laura Snyder

This Father’s Day, like every other Father’s Day, my thoughts go careening back to the time I was a mouthy teenager. My father was often upset with me for some smartaleck comment I would make. Even then, I guess, I was in training to be a humor columnist — but with remarkable hindsight, I can see now that practicing my sassiness on my dad wasn’t the smartest thing I could’ve done. He was proud of me when I stuck up for myself with other people; with him, however, he probably wished I would shut my trap before he needed to ground me again. My dad was a man who valued moments of solitude that are rare in a family of six. There was nothing he liked to do better than sit in a forest glade for hours, waiting for a deer to appear. He must have hated to shoot it to supplement our family’s grocery bill. Otherwise, sitting out in the woods for hours would’ve seemed like a waste of time. At least, that’s what I liked to
