STORIA Il bormiese ha una storia antica e ricca che si perde nella notte dei tempi, come dimostrano gli sporadici rinvenimenti di insediamenti preistorici, riconducibili a gruppi di cacciatori che durante i mesi estivi bivaccavano in alta montagna. Anche l’epoca romana lascia traccia di conoscenza delle valli bormine, ma soprattutto delle acque termali, già note e rinomate per il valore terapeutico, come riferito da Cassiodoro nel 535-536 d.C. Bisogna invece attendere sino ai primi secoli dell’anno mille per ricostruire la storia di Bormio documentata dalle copiose fonti archivistiche che ancora si conservano.

Grazie al commercio che si svolgeva instancabilmente per l’intero corso dell’anno lungo i passi alpini, la cittadina si arricchì di beni, di idee e cultura. Sebbene dipendente dal vescovo di Coira, Bormio riuscì ben presto ad acquisire autonomia politica, insediando un governo autonomo e democratico che delineò la vita del paese anche nei periodi di influenza straniera. Fu soprattutto il contatto con i duchi di Milano (1376-1509) che favorì lo sviluppo della cultura e dell’arte, come attestato dalle numerose opere ancora evidenti nelle chiese, nei palazzi e nei dipinti che si conservano copiosi. Dopo un breve insediamento francese, dal 1512 al 1797 gli elvetici delle leghe Grigie esercitarono la loro influenza sul paese, pur consentendo l’autonomia politica e il mantenimento degli statuti democratici preesistenti. Nel corso del XVII secolo anche Bormio, come il resto

dell’Europa, conobbe le difficoltà legate alle guerre di religione: saccheggi, transiti di eserciti e pestilenze lasciarono pesanti segni sul tessuto economico e sociale del paese.

Nel 1797 Bormio perse definitivamente l’autonomia e la sua storia confluì con quella del nascente stato Italiano. Il primo conflitto mondiale vide Bormio coinvolto nelle ostilità belliche: con un fronte di oltre 40 chilometri ad un’altitudine media di 3000 m., soldati di entrambi gli schieramenti si confrontarono in un’eroica guerra alpina, della quale si conservano sui monti ancora tracce evidenti e preziose. Lo sviluppo del turismo, da collocare al termine del secondo conflitto mondiale, fu favorito da un ambiente naturale ricco e sorprendente, dalla costruzione degli impianti di risalita e dallo sviluppo del termalismo, elementi tutti che fanno di Bormio una splendida stazione turistica nel cuore delle Alpi.

HISTORY The Bormio region has an ancient and rich history as evidenced by the sporadic findings of prehistoric settlements, linked to groups of hunters who bivouacked during the summer season at high altitudes in the mountains. Even the Roman era left a trace of knowledge of the “Bormine” valleys, mostly regarding the thermal waters, already well known and famous for their therapeutic properties, as reported

by Cassiodorus in 535-536 A.D. We must wait until the beginning of the year 1.000 A.D. to retrace the history of Bormio, 5

Thanks to the trade that took place tirelessly for the whole year along the Alpine passes, the town grew rich in goods, ideas and culture. Although subject to the bishop of Chur, Bormio soon succeeded in gaining political autonomy by installing an autonomous government which outlined the democratic life of the County even during periods of foreign influence.

It was mainly the contact with the Dukes of Milan (1376-1509) that favoured the development of culture and art, as evidenced by the numerous works still visible in churches, palaces and paintings. After a short French settlement, from 1512 to 1797 the Swiss Grisons exerted their influence on the country allowing political autonomy and the maintenance of existing democratic statutes. During the seventeenth century, like the rest of Europe, Bormio experienced difficulties related to the religious wars: looting, transiting of armies and plagues left heavy marks on the economic and social fabric of the County. In 1797 Bormio lost much of its autonomy and its history merged with that of the dawning Italian state. The First World War saw Bormio involved in the military hostilities: with a frontline of over 40 kilometers at an average altitude of 3000 m., the soldiers on both sides faced each other in a heroic alpine war, whose traces are still visible and preserved in the mountains. The Development of tourism, which took place at the end of the Second World War, was favoured by a rich and extraordinary natural 6

environment, the construction of the ski lifts and the development of thermal Spas. All these elements make Bormio and its valleys a magnificent tourist resort in the heart of the Alps .

GESCHICHTE Das Gebiet um Bormio ist reich an Geschichte durch Funde von prähistorischen Siedlungen und weitere Funde die auf Gruppen von Jägern, die in den Sommermonaten ihr Nachtlager in den Bergen aufschlugen, schließen. Schon in der Römerzeit waren die Täler rund um Bormio bekannt, vor allem die Thermalbäder waren berühmt für ihren therapeutischen Wert, wie von Cassiodoro (535-56 n.C.) erwähnt wurde. Die ersten dokumentierten Aufzeichnungen der Geschichte Bormios gehen zurück auf die ersten Jahrhunderte um das Jahr 1000, die archiviert und noch heute bewahrt werden.

Dank des sich entwickelnden Handels zu dieser Zeit, entlang der Alpenpässe, wurde Bormio reich an Gütern, Ideen und Kultur.

CONTADO DI BORMIO - The County of Bormio - Grafschaft Bormio einer kurzen französischen Besetzung übernahmen die Graubündener (15121797) die Vorherrschaft über das Hoch Veltlin, das bedeutete das Ende für die Sonderrechte und Privilegien, trotzdem erlaubten sie die politische Autonomie und die Aufrechterhaltung der vorher bestehenden demokratischen Statuten.

In der Zeit des siebzehnten Jahrhunderts wurde Bormio, wie auch der Rest Europas, durch Religionskriege stark beeinflusst: Plünderungen, Einfall von Militär und die Pest hinterließen schwere Zeichen auf das Gewerbe, der Wirtschaft und sozialem des Dorfes.Im Jahr 1797 schloss sich der Hoch Veltlin an die Cisalpinische Republik und an das Königreich Italien an, somit verlor Bormio endgültig seine autonome Stellung und alle Sonderrechte.

AMBIENTE NATURALE La conca di Bormio è ampia e luminosa; scavata nei secoli dai ghiacciai e dai corsi d’acqua, è circondata da monti che verso nord formano una barriera di calcare e dolomia la cui cima principale è la Reit (3075 m. slm.).

Vi confluiscono tre valli: la Valdidentro, la Valdisotto e la Valfurva. La regione gode di un clima particolarmente favorevole, nonostante l’altitudine e la latitudine. Si può evidenziare anzitutto la secchezza eccezionale dell’aria e la sua trasparenza.

Prolungata è l’esposizione al sole. Le giornate con cielo coperto sono scarse. La temperatura massima difficilmente supera i 28°, quella minima i -14°. Le precipitazioni

nevose sono abbondanti; la particolare esposizione a nord di alcuni versanti delle zone sciistiche assicura la permanenza del manto nevoso sino a primavera inoltrata. Il Bormiese è per gran parte entro i confini del Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio, una delle più vaste aree protette d’Europa. La caratteristica principale della copertura vegetale è data dalla presenza di numerosi boschi molto interessanti per estensione e contenuto floristico. Gli abeti rossi rivestono gran parte delle vallate intorno a Bormio. Frequenti nelle valli sono altresì pini cembri, larici e betulle. Straordinaria la presenza di fiori con 1800 specie. Eccezionale è l’ambiente delle sorgenti termali nel quale, a circa 1450 m., prospera una felce che raggiunge di norma appena i 700-800 metri di altitudine. Un notevole elemento di differenziazione nella vegetazione è dato dall’affioramento di rocce sedimentarie (calcari e dolomie) che determinano la crescita di boscaglie a pino mugo con erica nei luoghi meno innevati e con rododendro irsuto dove l’innevamento è più prolungato. La regione offre un habitat ideale per la tipica fauna stanziale alpina, rappresentata da cervi, da caprioli, da camosci e da stambecchi. La fauna minore è rappresentata da numerose colonie di marmotte e di scoiattoli, nonché di tassi, di ermellini, di volpi e di lepri. Numerosi sono gli uccelli con circa 200 specie segnalate, tra i quali il gallo forcello, alcuni esemplari di aquila reale e gipeto (avvoltoio degli agnelli).

E’ sorprendente la presenza di insediamenti permanenti a una altitudine che altrove 7

CONTADO DI BORMIO - The County of Bormio - Grafschaft Bormio segna l’inizio del deserto nivale. Sono ancora visibili le tipiche “baite” caratterizzate dalla presenza del legno, ultimi esemplari di un’architettura rurale che esprime un’autentica forma di cultura.

NATURAL ENVIRONMENT The centre of this region is the wide and sunny plain of Bormio, for centuries gouged by glaciers and flowing waters; it is surrounded by mountains that to the north form a barrier of limestone and dolomite of which the principal peak is the Reit (3075 m. asl.). Three valleys meet here: Valdidentro, Valdisotto and Valfurva. The region enjoys a particularly fine climate, despite its altitude and latitude. There is exceptionally clear and dry air and a lot of sun. Overcast days are rare. During the last years the maximum temperature was +28° and the minimum -14°. Snowfalls are abundant; the northerly position of some of the ski slopes ensures the presence of snow until well into the spring. The Bormio Region is within the borders of the Stelvio National Park, one of the biggest protected areas of Europe. The most salient characteristic of the vegetation is the presence of woods which are of great interest both for their quantity and for their flora. Most of the valleys here are covered in spruce trees. The valleys also abound in stone pines, larches and birches and they are exceptionally rich in flora - with 1800 species present.

Of exceptional interest is the presence of thermal waters which ensure, at an altitude 8

of about 1450 metres, the habitat of a type of fern normally found only at an altitude of 700/800 metres. aA notable peculiarity of the vegetation of the region of Bormio is the outcrop of sedimentary rocks (limestone and dolomite), which ensure the growth of woods of mountain pines (pinus mugo) and heather where there is less snow and of rhododendron hirsutus (alpenrose) where the snowfall is more prolonged.

This region provides an ideal habitat for the typical fauna of the Alps such as deer, chamoix and some steinbocks. Minor fauna is present in the form of numerous colonies of marmots, squirrels, badgers, ermines, foxes and hares. There are some 200 species of birds including the grouse and the white partridge; there are also some golden eagles and bearded vultures (gypaetus barbatus).

Surprising the presence of permanent dwellings at a height that elsewhere marks the beginning of snowy wastes. Still visible are the typical “baite” built with wood that are the last examples of a rural architecture which represents an authentic cultural form.

DIE UMWELT Das Zentrum der Landschaft von Bormio ist das weite und sonnige Becken, welches im Laufe der Jahrhunderte von Gletschern und Wildbächen geformt wurde.Es ist umgeben von Bergen (Kalksandstein, Dolomitgestein), die im Norden eine Barriere bilden. Ihr Hauptgipfel ist der Reit (3075 m ü.M.).

Die Höchsttemperatur übersteigt selten 28 Grad, die Tiefsttemperatur -14 Grad. Ausgiebiger Schneefall ; die besondere Position von einigen, sich in nördlicher Lage befindenden, Hängen sichern dem Skigebiet eine permanente Schneedecke bis spät in den Frühling. Das Gebiet Bormio liegt größtenteils an den Grenzen des Stilfser Nationalparks, eine der größten geschützten Fläche Europas. Das hervorstechende Merkmal der der Vegetation sind die zahlreichen Wälder mit seinen umfangreichen Pflanzenreichtum.

Die Rotfichte bedeckt große Teile der Ebene um Bormio.In den Tälern trifft man häufig auf die Kiefer, Lärche und Birke. Außergewöhnlich ist auch der Blumenreichtum mit 1800 Arten.In dem Bereich der Thermalquellen, auf zirka 1450 m ü.M. gedeiht ein Farn, der normalerweise nur auf einer Höhe von 700-800 m ü.M. zu finden ist. An den mit weniger Schnee bedeckten Hängen besteht der Pflanzenanteil meist aus Latschenkiefern.

Erika, Rhododendron findet man den schneereichen Zonen. Das Gebiet bietet idealen Lebensraum für die dort typische Tierwelt der Alpen: Hirsche, Rehe, Gämsen und Steinböcke. Die kleine Tierwelt ist mit Kolonien von Murmeltieren, Eichhörnchen, so wie Dachse, Hermeline, Füchse und Hasen vertreten. Zahlreich ist auch die Vogelwelt, davon sind zirka 200 Arten bestimmt, unter ihnen der Gallo Forcello, Exemplare

von Steinadlern und Bartgeiern (durch Ringe gekennzeichnet).Erstaunlich ist das Vorkommen von Dauersiedlungen in dieser Höhe am Beginn der Schneewüste. In diesen Ortschaften kann man noch die typischen “Baite” finden, deren charakteristisches Merkmal die Holzbauweise ist. Es handelt sich hier um die letzten Überreste einer bäuerlichen Architektur einer unverfälschten Kultur.

PASSO DELLO STELVIO Il Passo dello Stelvio è il più alto passo automobilistico d’Italia; coi suoi 2758 m s.l.m. è anche il secondo in tutta Europa.

Immerso nella natura incontaminata di una vasta area del Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio, circondato dalle imponenti vette della catena Ortles-Cevedale, il ghiacciaio dello Stelvio è la più vasta area sciabile estiva d’alta quota delle Alpi. Gli oltre venti km di piste tra il Passo e il Monte Cristallo (3450 m s.l.m.) permettono ai grandi campioni dello sci di preparare la stagione agonistica invernale. Oltre al turismo sciistico, il Passo è anche meta ambita da ciclisti, motociclisti, escursionisti e visitatori dei resti della prima guerra mondiale. La strada che giunge al Passo collega Bormio e l’Alta Valtellina con Trafoi e la Val Venosta ed è caratterizzata da ben 48 tornanti sul versante altoatesino e 36 su quello lombardo. Proprio da quest’ultimo è possibile giungere al giogo di Santa Maria o Passo dell’Umbrail (2503 m s.l.m), che permette l’ingresso in Svizzera direttamente in Val Monastero. CONTADO DI BORMIO - The County of Bormio - Grafschaft Bormio sono aperte da maggio a novembre, durante l’intero periodo invernale il Passo è chiuso su tutti e tre i versanti. La via dello Stelvio esisteva già ai tempi del Medioevo ma si presentava come un sentiero di montagna non carrozzabile e di attraversamento rischioso. Fu grazie all’Imperatore Francesco I d’Austria che divenne carrozzabile perchè volle una nuova strada che potesse collegare la val Venosta con la Valtellina per giungere a Milano, allora territorio austriaco. Il progetto fu affidato all’ingegnere della Provincia di Sondrio, Carlo Donegani (1775-1845), esperto d’alta montagna e già progettista del Passo dello Spluga. I lavori iniziarono nel 1822 con l’impiego fino a 2500 uomini tra operai, ingegneri e geologi. Dopo soli 3 anni nel 1825 l’opera fu compiuta e venne inaugurata alla presenza dell’Imperatore.

Fino al 1915 il valico era percorso tutto l’anno dalle diligenze grazie all’efficiente opera degli spalatori impiegati durante l’inverno. Durante la prima guerra mondiale fu teatro di aspri scontri tra italiani e austriaci. Dopo la vittoria divenne italiano e perse il suo significato originale di collegamento tra Vienna e Milano, per questo fu decisa la chiusura invernale.

Lo Stelvio è famoso nel mondo del ciclismo dal 1953, anno in cui è stato inserito nel tracciato del Giro d’Italia ed è stato teatro di una delle ultime grandi imprese di Fausto Coppi. Ogni volta che il Giro transita sul passo, questo è chiamato “Cima Coppi” in quanto passo più alto della corsa. Il Passo dello Stelvio è stato traguardo di tappa del Giro d’Italia dal 1953 (vittoria di Coppi).

La salita (36 tornanti) è affascinante ed impegnativa. La strada del versante lombardo inizia da Bormio ed è lunga circa 21 km, con pendenze medie del 7%, massima del 12% e dislivello che supera i 1500 m. Ogni anno vengono organizzate gare ciclistiche per amatori sulle strade del passo dello Stelvio.

THE STELVIO PASS The Stelvio Pass is the highest road pass in Italy, with its 2758 m above sea level it is also the second in Europe. Nestled in the pristine nature of a large area of the Stelvio National Park, surrounded by the imposing peaks of the chain Ortles-Cevedale chain, the Stelvio glacier is the largest summer ski area at high altitude in the Alps, more than twenty kilometers of slopes between the Pass and Mount Crystal (3450 m) allow the great champions of alpine skiing to train for the winter season. In addition to ski tourism, the Pass is also a popular destination for cyclists, motorcyclists, hikers and visitors of the remains of the First World War. The road that reaches the Pass links Bormio and Alta Valtellina with Trafoi and Val Venosta.

It is characterized by about 48 hairpin bends on the Alto Adige side, and 36 on the Lombard side, where it is possible to reach the Santa Maria or Umbrail Pass (2503 m) allowing entry to Switzerland directly in Val Monastero. The Stelvio road and the ski slopes are open from May o November, during the whole winter season the Pass is closed on all three sides. The Stelvio way already existed in the Middle Ages, but it looked like a unpaved mountain trail and the crossing

was dangerous. It was carriageabled thanks to Emperor Francis I of Austria, who wanted a new road connecting the Vinschgau with Valtellina to reach Milan which was Austrian territory. The project was entrusted to Carlo Donegani (1775-1845) chief engineer of the Province of Sondrio, high-mountain expert and former designer of Splügenpass.

Works began in 1822 employing up to 2500 men between workers, engineers and geologists. After only 3 years in 1825 the work was completed and the new road was inaugurated in the presence of the Emperor himself. Until 1915, the stagecoaches crossed the Pass all year, thanks to the efficient work of snow-shovellers employed in the winter. During the First World War the Pass was the scene of fierce clashes between Italians and Austrians. After the victory, it

became Italian and lost its original meaning as a link between Vienna and Milan, for this reason it was decided to close it in winter.

The Stelvio has been famous in the cycling world since 1953, when it was included in the route of the Tour of Italy (Giro d’Italia), becoming the scene of one of the last great sporting achievements of Fausto Coppi.

Every time the Giro passes, this is known as “Cima Coppi”, the highest step of the race.

The Stelvio Pass was stage finish line of Giro d’Italia since 1953 (Coppi’s victory). The climb (36 hairpin bends) is fascinating and challenging. The Lombard side road starts in Bormio and is about 21 km long with average gradients of 7%, maximum of 12% and over 1500 m drop. Every year cycling races for amateurs are held on the roads of the Stelvio pass.

STILFSER JOCH Das Stilfser Joch ist der höchste befahrbare Pass Italiens, mit seinen 2758 m ü.M.ist er auch der zweithöchste Europas.

Inmitten der unberührten Natur des Nationalparks Stilfser Joch umgeben von den majestätischen Gipfeln der Ortler Alpen Der Gletscher des Stilfser Jochs ist ein großes Sommerskigebiet mit über 20 km Pisten zwischen dem Pass und dem Berg Cristallo (3450 m ü.M.) Hier bereiten sich Leistungssportler auf die Wintersaison vor.

Neben dem Ski-Tourismus ist der Pass ein beliebtes Ziel für Radfahrer, Motorradfahrer, Wanderer und für Besucher auf den Spuren der Vergangenheit. Die Straße verbindet Bormio und den HochVeltlin mit Trafoi und dem Vintschgau. Sie hat 48 Kehren auf der Südtiroler Seite und 36 auf der Lombardischen. Von hieraus kann man Santa Maria oder den Umbrail Pass (2503 m ü.M.) erreichen und erlaubt den Eintritt in die Schweiz direkt in das Münster Tal. Die Straße und die Skipisten sind von Mai bis November geöffnet, während der Winterperiode ist er auf allen drei Seiten geschlossen.Die Straße des Stilfser Jochs existierte schon im Mittelalter, aber sie präsentierte sich als Gebirgspfad und der Übergang war risikoreich. Dank Kaiser Franz I. von Österreich wurde sie ausgebaut und somit befahrbar für Kutschen. Er brauchte diese neue Straße die den Vintschgau mit dem Hoch Veltlin verband um somit 12

Mailand zu erreichen ,das zu damaligen Zeiten österreichisches Territorium war.

Das Projekt wurde dem Ingenieur Carlo Donegani (1775-1845), aus der Provinz Sondrio, anvertraut.Er war Experte der Berge und schon Planer des Splügenpass.

Die Arbeiten begannen im Jahr 1822 unter Einsatz von bis zu 2500 Männern, Arbeitern, Ingenieure, und Geologen. Nach nur 3 Jahren (1825) wurde das Werk vollendet und in Anwesenheit des Kaisers eingeweiht. Bis 1915 war der Pass ganzjährig geöffnet dank, der effizienten Arbeit der Schneeräumer und somit konnte die Postkutsche jederzeit passieren. Während des ersten Weltkrieges war der Pass Schauplatz heftiger Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Italien und Österreich Nach dem Sieg Italiens verlor er seine ursprünglichen Bedeutung als Verbindung zwischen Wien und Mailand und so wurde beschlossen ihn im Winter zu schließen. Das Stilfser Joch ist in der Welt des Radsports berühmt seit 1953, dem Jahr, indem der Pass Ziel der Etappe des Giro d´Italia und die von Fausto Coppi, in seinem letzten Rennen, gewonnen wurde.Seit dem wird jedes mal beim Giro d´Italia der höchste Pass “Cima Coppi“ genannt 1953 (Sieg Coppi).

Der Aufstieg (36 Kehren) ist faszinierend und anspruchsvoll zugleich. Die lombardische Seite, beginnend von Bormio, ist zirka 21 km lang mit einer durchschnittlichen Steigung von7 %, maximal 12 % und mit einem Höhenunterschied von 1500 m. Jedes Jahr werden Rennen für Amateure und Liebhaber des Radsports hier organisiert.

L’Alta Valtellina è ricca di tesori storici ed artistici che si possono visitare passeggiando tra le vie del centro storico di Bormio, oppure durante escursioni lungo le valli del Contado. Un tempo questi erano i luoghi delle streghe, paesaggi da sogno e allo stesso tempo misteriosi; luoghi dove si sono combattute molte guerre per il controllo dei traffici commerciali ed il predominio territoriale, come la Prima Guerra Mondiale i cui resti sono ancora ben visibili sulle cime delle montagne. Oggi è possibile conoscere una buona parte del passato grazie a studi e ricerche consultabili negli archivi storici delle biblioteche comunali e illustrate nei Musei dell’Alta Valtellina. In questa guida riportiamo alcune significative peculiarità di edifici religiosi, civili e militari che fanno del luogo un museo a cielo aperto e risvegliano immagini di tempi antichi.

Piazza Cavour Bormio - Der erste Hinweis auf den Hauptplatz von Bormio geht zurück in die Eisenzeit (1000 v. Chr.)Nach einem Erdrutsch des Berges Reit im Mittelalter der einen Teil,sowie auch die Straße Dossorovina, begrub wurde der Platz wieder aufgebaut.

Im Jahre 1621 nach dem großen Brand, der von Spaniern gelegt wurde gab es erneut einen Wiederaufbau von den bis heute noch einige Paläste bestehen.Unter diesen der Palazzo Podesta, Sitz des Gerichts und des Gefängnisses. Der sogenannte Cortivo, wo öffentliche Versammlungen zu Zeiten der Grafschaft stattfanden und der Kuerc der Platz auf dem der Uhrenturm seit 1498 dominiert.

Bezeichnend sind die Wasserspeier in Form von Drachen die von der Traufe herausragen.

Auf der Rückseite eine Inschrift zeugt von einer antiken Vergangenheit: Libertate quam maiores peperere studeat servare posteritas (Die Nachwelt verpflichtet sich die Freiheit zu erhalten, die die Alten errungen haben)

Torre delle ore, o torre civica (piazza Cavour, Bormio); di fondazione medievale e più volte rimaneggiata nel corso dei secoli. Rialzata nel 1498, risistemata nel 1637 subì un disastroso incendio che nel 1855 devastò la parte sommitale, di seguito ripristinata nella forma attuale.

La torre ospita due campane ricavate dalla fusione della Bajona, la grande campana usata un tempo per richiamare la popolazione del Contado in occasione di riunioni, feste o pericoli impellenti. I suoi rintocchi potevano essere sentiti nelle valli circostanti. La torre fu di proprietà della famiglia Alberti già dal XIII sec.; faceva parte del “quadrilatero degli Alberti”, un gruppo di palazzi fortificati appartenenti alla nobile famiglia la cui dinastia si estinse nel 1825.

The Clock Tower, or civic tower (piazza Cavour, Bormio); of medieval foundation and remodeled several times over the centuries.

Raised in 1498 and restructured in 1637, it suffered a disastrous fire in 1855 that destroyed the upper part; then it was restored in its present form. The tower houses two bells created from the fusion of Bajona, the great bell once used to call the people of the County to meetings, parties or pressing dangers. Its chimes could be heard in the surrounding valleys. The tower was owned by the Alberti family since the thirteenth century and was part of the “quadrilateral of Alberti”, a group of fortified palaces belonging to the noble family whose dynasty died out in 1825.

Erhöht wurde er im Jahr 1498, restauriert im Jahr 1637 und im Jahr 1637 wurde der obere Teil durch einen Brand zerstört Es erfolgte die Wiederherstellung, die so bis heute erhalten ist. Das Geschlecht der Alberti starb im Jahr 1825 aus.

Chiesa collegiata dei SS. Gervasio e Protasio (piazza Cavour, Bormio); citata in un documento del VIII secolo, la chiesa fu danneggiata nel 1620 dai Grigioni e distrutta completamente dopo l’incendio del 1621 ad opera degli Spagnoli, venne riedificata nel corso del ‘600. In facciata, oltre al portale in serpentino locale, rimane traccia delle aperture della chiesa primitiva, sovrastate da affreschi (XIV sec.). L’interno, ad unica navata, propone cappelle ricche di pale, dipinti e altari lignei. L’organo, costruito a partire dal 1638, è posizionato al di sopra della cappella del “Compianto” che ospita le statue realizzate nel 1648 dallo scultore Giovanni Pietro della Rocca. Il presbiterio è ricco di elementi artistici: il ciborio di legno intagliato e dorato, i due grandi teleri dedicati ai santi Patroni (1720, Prina), e sullo sfondo il grande dipinto che raffigura il trionfo della musica liturgica (Bormio, Marni, XVII secolo).

On the facade, in addition to the portal in local serpentine stone, there are remains of the openings of the primitive church, topped by frescoes (14th c.). The interior has a single nave, chapels offering rich paintings and altars. The organ, built in 1638, is located above the chapel of the “Mourning” which houses the statues created in 1648 by the sculptor Giovanni Pietro della Rocca. The sanctuary is rich in artistic elements: the ciborium of carved and gilded wood, two large canvases dedicated to the patron saints (1720, Prina), and in the background the large painting depicting the triumph of liturgical music (Bormio, Marni, seventeenth century).

Combo Bridge (via Coltura, Bormio); dating back to the fourteenth century, it took its characteristic bow shape in 1591. It has two votive chapels: one devoted to S. John Nepomuceno, patron the fury of waters and the other one related to the transport in Catalonia of a copy of S. Crucifix which replaced the seventeenth-century cross from Bormio and lost during the Spanish Civil War. In the Middle Ages it was the only access road to the village over the river Frodolfo, nearby there was a customs house for those coming from the south - east or from the Gavia pass.

Brücke Combo (via Coltura,Bormio) Die Brücke wurde schon im vierzehnten Jahrhundert erwähnt.Sie hat eine charakteristische Bogenform und an den Seiten sind zwei Votivkapellen, eine gewidmet dem S. Giovanni Nepumuk: Dem Schutzheiligen der Gewalt des Wassers und die andere dem Transport, dessen Kreuz eine Kopie aus dem 1600 Jahrhundert ist. Das original Kreuz ging wahrscheinlich in dem spanischen Bürgerkrieg verloren.Im Mittelalter war die Brücke die einzige Zufahrtsstraße zum Dorf über den Fluss Frodolfo Dort befand sich eine Zollgrenze für Reisende vom Gavia Pass herkommend oder von Süden nach Osten.

Church of St. Antonio Abate or Holy Crucifix

Chiesa di S. Antonio Abate o del SS. Crocifisso (piazza SS. Crocifisso, reparto Combo, Bormio); costruita a partire dal 1368, ampliata nel corso del XVI secolo, conserva interessanti cicli di affreschi. Al 1368 risalgono i dipinti della parete destra (Cristo alla colonna oltre a lacerti di scene della Passione). Una piccola Crocifissione posta alla base dell’arco trionfale, datata al 1376 fu eseguita da Agostino Ferrari. I dipinti della parete sinistra, fortemente compromessi dall’ampliamento cinquecentesco, riportano la data del 1472.

Nel presbiterio, storie della vita di S. Antonio (Paolo da Caylina, XVI sec.); sull’arco trionfale santi e profeti, oltre all’incoronazione della Vergine da parte della Trinità, affiancata dai santi Gervasio e Protasio. L’altare di destra conserva il taumaturgico Crocifisso, mentre nella cappella di sinistra sono esposte tavolette votive.

by Saints Gervasio and Protasio. The right altar preserves the miraculous Crucifix, while the chapel on the left exhibits votive tablets.

Der Altar zur rechten bewahrt das heilige Kreuz ,während in den Kapelle Votivtafeln zu sehen sind.

Al 1672 risale l’altare ligneo dorato, scolpito dagli intagliatori Donati di Valdidentro. Un non meglio identificato Padre Ulderico è autore della pala raffigurante S. Francesco Saverio con il Crocefisso. L’altare di destra, voluto dalla congregazione delle donne bormine, fu eseguito da G.P. della Rocca. Ignoto l’autore della pala con la Vergine e il Bambino. Sotto la chiesa, chiuse al pubblico, si trovano le tombe dei padri.

Chiesa di S. Ignazio (vicolo Ginnasio, Bormio); costruita a partire dal 1635 e consacrata nel 1674, fu edificata dai Gesuiti che a partire dal 1632 gestivano il collegio locale. Di impianto barocco, ad aula unica, ha cupola completamente affrescata con scene di vita dei Gesuiti (Muttoni XVII sec.). L’altare maggiore, dedicato a S. Ignazio, conserva due tele che raffigurano la morte di S. Ignazio e la presentazione delle regole dell’ordine 20

Die Kirche S. Ignazio (vicolo Ginnasio, Bormio);im Jahr 1635 erbaut und 1674 geweiht. Sie war die örtliche Schule und Kolleg, das von Jesuiten (ab 1632) geleitet wurde.Das barocke Kirchenschiff mit einer Kuppel reich an Fresken, die Szenen aus dem Leben der Jesuiten darstellen. Der Hauptaltar ist dem heiligen S.Ignazio gewidmet mit zwei Gemälden. Das erste stellt den Tod des Heiligen dar und das zweite die Präsentation der Regeln des Jesuitenordens an den Papst (Muttoni). Die linke Kapelle, die dem heiligen S.Francesco Saverio gewidmet ist stand unter der Schirmherrschaft der adeligen Familie Nesini. Der vergoldete Holzaltar gefertigt von Carver Donati (1672)) aus Valdidentro. Ein nicht identifizierbarer Pater Ulderico ist der Maler des Altarbildes von S.Francesco Saverio mit Kreuz.

Der rechte Altar auf Anweisung von Frauen aus Bormio von G.P. Della Rocca errichtet zeigt das Altarbild Madonna mit Kind von einem unbekannten Künstler.Unter der Kirche, für die Öffentlichkeit nicht zugänglich, befinden sich die Gräber der Väter des Dorfes.

Chiesa di S. Vitale (via Roma, Bormio); citata nel 1196, ha impianto romanico, con abside delineata da esili archetti e uno svettante

campanile. In facciata interessanti affreschi ritraggono i santi titolari Vitale e Valeria, oltre alla Vergine in trono con S. Antonio e un santo vescovo. Curiosa la rappresentazione del Cristo della Domenica, ossia l’immagine di Cristo ignudo attorniato da simboli di lavoro: scopo della raffigurazione era di ricordare ai fedeli il divieto del lavoro nei giorni festivi.

La parete sud, oltre ad una lapide datata 1294, conserva una piccola Crocifissione.

L’interno, sobrio ed essenziale, mantiene alcuni resti di affreschi oltre all’altare ligneo dorato che raffigura la discesa dello Spirito Santo sugli apostoli. Restaurata nel 2010.

Church of St. Vitale

ist eine der ältesten Kirchen Bormios aus dem Jahr 1196 mit einem emporragenden Glockenturm und interessanten Fresken an der Fassade, die die heiligen Vitale und Valeria darstellen. Außerdem die Jungfrau inthronisiert mit S.Antonio und einem heiligen Bischof. Kurios ist die Darstellung von “Cristo della Domenica”. Das Bild zeigt den nackten Christus umgeben von Symbolen der Arbeit.

Der Zweck der Darstellung war die Gläubigen an das Verbot der Arbeit an den Feiertagen zu erinnern. An der Südwand befindet sich eine Gedenktafel mit einem kleinen Kreuzgang von 1294. Das Innere der Kirche ist nüchtern und auf das wesentliche beschränkt.

The facade shows some interesting frescoes depicting the saints Vitale and Valeria, in addition to the Virgin enthroned with St. Anthony and a holy bishop. A curious representation of the Christ of Sunday features the image of naked Christ surrounded by symbols of labour: the purpose of the representation was to remind the faithful of the prohibition to work on public holidays. The south wall shows a small Crucifixion as well as a plaque dated 1294.

The interior is simple and basic, with some remains of frescoes and a gilded wooden altar depicting the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. Restored in 2010.

Nella sezione etnografica il folklore e la tradizione sono ben rappresentati con antichi oggetti d’uso quotidiano, attrezzi agricoli e vecchi strumenti di botteghe artigiane. Curiosa la scuderia di carrozze, fra le quali la diligenza in servizio sino alla Prima Guerra Mondiale lungo la strada dello Stelvio. Non poteva mancare la collezione di vecchi sci e attrezzi usati per il divertimento sulla neve.

Bormio Civic Museum (De Simoni Palace, via Buon Consiglio, Bormio); founded in 1962, the museum occupies 17 rooms in which they are exposed historical, artistic and ethnographic collections. In the artistic section there are paintings, altar pieces, wooden statues, antique furniture, frescoes and stone artifacts from ancient palaces and churches of the historic center. The historical section presents a collection of war remnants related to the wars of independence and the First World War. In the ethnographic section

there are ancient objects of daily use, farm tools and old tools of the craft shops. Very interesting the team of coaches, including diligence in service over the Stelvio road before the First World War. Finally the set of old skis and equipment used for fun during the winter season.

ARTE e CULTURA - Art & Culture - Kunst und Kultur Interessant ist der Bestand an Kutschen unter ihnen auch die Postkutsche , die für den Postverkehr bis zum ersten Weltkrieg zwischen Bormio und Tirol über das Stilser Joch sorgte. Nicht fehlen darf die Kollektion antiker Skier und Ausrüstungen die auch für das Vergnügen im Schnee eingesetzt wurden.

Museo Vallivo della Valfurva “Mario Testorelli”: aperto nel 1979 e riallestito da poco nella nuova sede in S. Antonio, Piazza Forba 1, sulla strada per Santa Caterina, espone preziose raccolte di oggetti tradizionali e ricostruzioni di ambienti ed attività lavorative del passato. Suggestive le ricostruzioni degli ambienti locali come la casa contadina della Valfurva, la casera con tutto il corredo di utensili per la lavorazione del latte, il mulino e le botteghe artigiane tra cui quelle del falegname e del calzolaio.

Ulteriori sezioni documentano i lavori nei campi, i trasporti, i lavori casalinghi, la scuola, l’arte sacra e la religione, il costume.

Grande fascino suscitano il vecchio mulino per la macinazione della segale e il forno a legna per la cottura del pane. Vi sono poi i reparti dedicati alla I Guerra Mondiale e all’alpinismo, ricchi di reperti e testimonianze, che rievocano vicende che hanno toccato direttamente la valle e i suoi abitanti.

into new headquarters in St. Antonio, Piazza Forba 1 along the road to Santa Caterina, it exhibits precious collections of traditional objects and reconstructions of household and working activities of the past. Suggestive replicas of local activities such as the Valfurva farmhouse, the casera (dairy) with all the tools for the processing of milk, the mill and craft shops including the carpenter’s and the shoemaker’s. Additional sections documenting the work in the fields, transport, housework, school, holy art and religion, the typical costume, a charming old mill for grinding rye and wood oven for baking bread. Then there are sections dedicated to World War I and climbing, rich in exhibits, recalling events that have directly affected the valley and its inhabitants.

Museo Mineralogico e Naturalistico: a cura di Edy Romani, naturalista, è stato allestito negli anni ’70 il Museo Mineralogico e Naturalistico di Bormio. Le collezioni mineralogiche e paleontologiche comprendono attualmente

circa 14.000 pezzi. I campioni esposti sono oltre 2.000, alpini e soprattutto valtellinesi, alcuni dei quali di importanza internazionale.

Il museo comprende anche una sezione a diorami sulla fauna alpina e migratoria.

Natural Mineralogical Museum: in Bormio in via Ortigara 2, run by naturalist Edy Romani, opened in 1972, it houses collections of minerals and crystals not only from Valtellina, but also from the rest of the world. Next to it, meticulously created naturalistic reconstructions, dioramas with specimens of local wildlife and the stone cutting laboratory.

L’Alta Valtellina è un comprensorio turistico che offre la possibilità di praticare più di 30 sport diversi 365 giorni l’anno. Dispone di 3200 km di percorsi Mountain Bike scaricabili gratuitamente su gps, oltre 9000 m di dislivello per le scalate con la bici da strada percorrendo le leggendarie strade dei famosi passi alpini quali Stelvio, Gavia, Foscagno e Mortirolo. Altre attività sportive da praticare in estate includono: escursioni in 1500 km di sentieri che attraversano molteplici scenari alpini tra storia, natura e panorami mozzafiato nel territorio del Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio; alpinismo fino a 4000 m di quota nel gruppo di cime Ortler-Cevedale, sci estivo al Passo dello Stelvio su 35 km di

piste da discesa e 22 km di piste da fondo.

Nella stagione invernale il comprensorio sciistico vanta più di 200 km di piste da discesa, 3 snowpark, oltre 60 km di piste da fondo tra cui un poligono per il biathlon, poi scialpinismo e altro ancora.

Il Palazzo del Ghiaccio di Bormio è stato più volte teatro di importanti gare di Short Track a livello nazionale ed internazionale. La nazionale italiana di Short Track si allena spesso qui. Tra i servizi offerti: discoteca sul ghiaccio con impianto audio e luci, noleggio pattini, spogliatoi, parcheggio esterno gratuito.

This attractive building houses an ice skating rink approved by the Italian federation FISG, artificial refrigeration, four locker rooms with showers and lounge for coffee breaks. The Ice Palace in Bormio has been the venue of Short Track important national and international events several times. The Italian Short Track National Team often trains here and also other teams come here for a period of training to prepare for competitions.

THERMAL WATERS According to tradition, the thermal springs were already known in the first century A.D., as shown by a reference made by Plinio the Elder in his “Naturalis Historia”. There are nine thermal-mineral springs situated at the base of the Reit Mountain in the area near Burrone d’Adda. The water gushes out at a temperature between 36 to 43 degrees, according to its location and weather conditions. It is recommended for various forms of uricaemia, circulatory diseases, diabetes and gynaecological infections. One of the springs, the Cinglaccia, is canalized and used to fill Bormio Terme establishment.

The other springs flow to Bagni Vecchi: the spring St. Martin with its “Sweating Grotta” is the only example of its kind all the

La fraina o, farina di grano saraceno, con il burro e i formaggi d’alpe e la bresaola danno alla cucina valtellinese una forte tipicità, unica in tutto l’arco alpino. Questi i piatti tipici: Pizzoccheri, rustiche tagliatelle di farina nera con verdure, condite con burro e formaggio d’alpe. Sciatt, informi frittelle di farina nera ripiene di formaggio. Polenta taragna; Buchweizenmehlbrei mit Almbutter und Almkäse. Segale; typisches Roggenbrot. Bresaola; es handelt sich dabei um gesalzenes und luftgetrocknetes Rindfleisch.E ist von zartem, milden und äußerst delikatem Geschmack, sollte vorzugsweise als Aufschnitt oder verfeinert als Carpaccio verzehrt werden.Natürlich dürfen Salami und Schinken der Region nicht fehlen. Die lokalen Käsesorten sind der Casera, Scimudin und der Bitto. Er ist sozusagen der König unter den KäsereiProdukten des Hoch-Veltlin, der sich seiner geschützten Herkunftsbezeichnung DOP rühmt. Der Bitto ist ein fetter halbgarer Bergkäse, mittelhart bei mittlerer Reife.

Sein milder und delikater Geschmack wird durch längere Lagerung würziger. Als junges Produkt ist er ein klassischer Schnittkäse , während er nach einem Jahr Lagerung ein ein ausgezeichneter Käse zum Reiben wird.Steinpilze sind in dieser Region sehr vertreten und werden vielfach in der Küche verwendet, wie bei Wildbret. Bisciola; ein rustikaler Kuchen mit Nüssen, Feigen und Rosinen serviert auch mit einer Vanillesauce oder Brauliosauce, aus dem berühmten Veltliner Bitterlikör hergestellt. Weine des Hoch-Veltlin sind : Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, Vvalgella, Valtellina und Sforzato.

Empfelenswert sind auch die bitteren Liköre aus Gebirgskräutern wie Brailio und Taneda.

In 1921 Teodosio Brielli began to produce his “Pine Tree Gems”, pretty green candies, with balsamic and therapeutic properties (treatment of respiratory diseases), made from an infusion of pine buds, honey from Bormio and other ingredients from Alpine woods.

The range of candies was expanded when the company was handed over to his son Carlo, who maintained quality and authenticity.

Among the most original ones: Taneda (alpine herb), Stelvio Mint, Honey, Wild Berries.

Pulite e lavate accuratamente i funghi porcini, senza rovinarli e tagliateli a fette sottili. Pulite l’insalata e tagliatela finemente. Mescolate l’aceto con l’acqua, aggiungete le mele tagliate a cubetti, i pinoli tostati e l’olio. Servite su piatti, alternando l’insalata e le fettine di porcini con del pane di segale, tagliato a fettine sottili e qualche scaglietta di Grana Padano. Condite il tutto con un filo di olio di oliva extravergine.

PORCINI MUSHROOM SALAD WITH APPLE SAUCE Ingredients: 100 g of seasonal salad, 150 g fresh Porcini mushrooms, 50 g of Grana Padano DOP cheese, 20 g of rye bread.

For the apple sauce: 5 g of pine nuts, 60 g Granny Smith Valtellina apples, Water, apple vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper.

Clean and wash carefully the Porcini mushrooms, without damaging cut them into thin slices.

Clean and wash the salad and cut it finely. Mix vinegar with water, add the apples (little cubes), pine nuts and olive oil. Serve all on plates with rye bread and slivers of Grana Padano cheese.

Dress all with extra virgin olive oil.
