Church Churches [From front page.] According to Fleener, in 1972, the congregation dedicated a series of beautiful, stained-glass windows designed by A.F. Tiller of City Glass in Fort Wayne. The windows on the west side of the nave depict the life and ministry of Jesus. The tops of the windows feature the walls and tower of Zion, and the bases are adorned with Works of Mercy as described in Matthew 25:34-36. The small lancet windows of the east nave bear the title of the great “I Am’s” of Jesus in the Gospel of John. Each window shows a specific “I Am” saying and symbol. Zion, which Fleener noted is dedicated to fine music in worship, features a Rogers Classic organ, three keyboard manuals and 59 speaking voices, installed in 1991. He noted that the congregation also owns a grand piano, built by Estonia Piano Company, dedicated in 2003. “The acoustics of the building are excellent, which makes the congregation the location for the annual community Christmas Cantata,” he added. Another eight blocks south is the First Assembly of God Church, which new Pastor Chuck Rogers described as “unique.” “Well, compared to modern churches, it’s kind of the old style,” added Rogers. “It’s got the woodwork with the big pews and a big pulpit. “The building was built in 1956, but it’s
in really fantastic shape. It’s different than if you were building today.” He added, “I think in the past it’s been a church that’s pretty involved in the community. That’s what we’re heading for today.” In Montpelier, Sr. Pastor the Rev. Laura A. High of Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene noted her church’s modern features. “The congregation relocated to its current facility in 2003,” added High. “This modern facility is completely handicap accessible, contains a gymnasium as well as traditional elements. “The stained glass windows were presented to the congregation as a memorial and are a pictorial representation of the church’s primary teachings on the power of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as well as the power of the Holy Spirit.” Another unique stop in Blackford County, Calvary Christian - The Lighthouse Church, is located on the north end of Hartford City and has become a landmark for anyone entering the city from the north. As the name describes, the church features a large lighthouse that faces State Road 3. Pastor Fleener of Zion Lutheran Church noted that his congregation prizes its heritage and traditions, which probably holds true for other churches in the area, and their unique buildings will all likely be busy with activity come this Easter Sunday.
