Free range MTB: Bikepacking in perspective

The White Bike: A play by Tamara von Werthern

START 1 4:00 VENUE 17 George Washington Browne

START 1 8:30 VENUE 20 Pleasance Cabaret Bar,

After attempts at losing toes during winter mountaineering and at breaking bones during downhill mountain biking, Swiss mountain biker Gian Liesch, mixed disciplines and took up bikepacking (cycle touring off-road). He now tackles technical 10,000 ft summits, riding across mountain chains in summer and winter and taking part in what’s possibly Europe’s toughest MTB race… only to find it’s not all about the bike, but about spending time in and with nature.

The White Bike: a dramatic reading of the new play by Tamara von Werthern. The White Bike addresses the issue of road safety by looking at the personal cost of road death. Being killed in traffic as a pedestrian or cyclist is such a random, senseless death that it could literally happen to anyone. The play is inspired by the case of Eilidh Cairns who was killed by a lorry as she cycled to work. It uses witness statements, personal recollections of family members and years of cycling experience on the streets of London to create a deeply personal portrait of a life cut short too soon.

Room, Central Library George IV Bridge, EH1 1EG

19,000 cyclists are injured in UK reported road accidents annually. Many don’t claim compensation. Why not? What prevents them? Why is that bad for other cyclists? How would you go about making a claim? Legal expert Julie Harris will give you the low down in her short talk.

Had a rubbish day at work? Wind down with a ride along a route linking Cramond and Portobello. Mooted as the ‘Boardwalk’ route in the original Waterfront proposal, the remaining parts of this route should be a priority for improvement over the next few years.

Honest Toun Dawdle 50 Km Audax

START 10:00 VENUE 8 Musselburgh

START 11:00 VENUE 8 Musselburgh

We are pleased to announce not one but two new Audax rides, the 50 km Honest Toun Dawdle and the 100 Km Honest Toun Daunder through East Lothian. If you have never tried an Audax before, these are an ideal introduction to this challenging form of non-competitive cycle sport, as they are relatively short in Audax terms (where several 100s of Km are ‘normal’ distances). The rides are unsupported in that you make your own way, there are no signposts or mechanical support but there will be some experienced cyclists on the route to help, if required. The challenge is to complete the distance within a predefined time limit, which requires a minimum speed of 10 Km/h (including any stops you choose to make along the way). Both events will start and finish in Musselburgh, where refreshments will be provided upon completion. Starting and finishing in Musselburgh the 100 Km will start at 10:00 and the 50 Km at 11:00. ENTRY FEE £10 individuals, £20 family Further information on the events and how to book will appear on the EdFoC website around early May. www.aukweb.net
