Welcome 2018 sees our biggest Edinburgh Festival of Cycling yet - not only extended to 18 days to spread the rides and events out more, EdFoC also goes on tour, taking events to Glasgow and Dundee. The simple act of cycling can change lives and transform places, and urbanism and health are among our themes this year. Highlights include Peter Walker’s How Cycling can save the World, Morten Kabell on how to Copenhagenize Scotland and Dutch documentary Why we cycle. Be inspired by tales of physical and mental recovery through cycling as well as adventures, from the Adventure Syndicate’s Divided the film (back by popular demand) to Kate Rawles’s amazing biodiversity ride along the spine of South America on a bamboo bike she built herself. There are lots of opportunities to get on a bike, with guided rides, the ever-popular Original Edinburgh Night Ride and the chance to ride on closed roads in the city centre. Or take a spin in support of Bikes for Refugees, our charity of the year! Kim Harding, Festival Director.

Cycling Europe on a Bike Called Reggie Times 1 8:30 -19:30 VENUE 16 Pleasance, EH8 9TJ Meet Andrew: teacher, writer and longdistance cyclist.
NOW, MEET REGGIE, HIS BIKE.
With two European cycling adventures already under his belt, Andrew was ready for a new challenge. Exchanging his job as a teacher in Oxfordshire for an expedition on Reggie the bike, he set off on his most daring trip yet: a journey from Tarifa in Spain to Nordkapp in Norway – from Europe’s geographical south to its northernmost point. Join the duo as they take on an epic journey across nearly 8000 km of Europe, through mountains, valleys, forests and the open road, proving that no matter where you’re headed, life on two wheels is full of surprises.

This guided tour takes about 3 hours (distance 18 km/11 miles). You will sample the rich diversity which Edinburgh has to offer and which is best experienced on a bike. Travel along picturesque cycle paths, passing a few of the iconic sites in the heart of the city along the way, with a royal palace, the verdant Holyrood Park and the coastal promenade of Portobello among the highlights. There’s simply no better way to see the dramatic and contrasting cityscape of Edinburgh, capital of Scotland.
Pilates and Yoga are now used by many professional cyclists as an integral part of their training. This is because both Pilates and Yoga work ALL of the body’s muscles, both core and superficial. These specially designed classes will stretch the areas that get very tight from cycling, such as the quads, hip flexors and hamstrings, as well as increasing core strength and focusing on the upper-body areas that cyclists often neglect. £12 via Bea Alexander Pilates website

After nearly 40 years working in bicycle shops, Mike Sweatman has a collection of 1,400 rear dérailleurs. Some are worn and rusty, some are pristine and brand-spanking-new. Some are over 100 years old, some were manufactured yesterday. Some are famous classics, some are obscure models from unexpected places like the Ukraine or Argentina. Some really are rather dull, but many have a surprisingly interesting story to tell. You can see a random selection on Mike’s pleasantly nerdy, cult, Dérailleurs website (link via edfoc.org.uk). Mike will bring along a selection of 100 dérailleurs, and will talk about the dérailleur and its place in the history of the bicycle. There will also be reflections on the politics and social changes through which we have cycled. You will make the (virtual) acquaintance of Tullio Campagnolo and Shozaburo Shimano, Fausto Coppi and Eddy Merckx, and, of course, Gary Fisher and his pals on the Repack Road. Strangely, Eric Clapton, Benito Mussolini and Pope John Paul II will also play walk-on roles.

Times 18:30 -19:30 VENUE 16 Pleasance Theatre, EH8 9TJ After Michelle Brideau recovered from Crohn’s surgery in 2014, she knew she’d been taking her health for granted and needed to find a way to fit exercise into her busy life. She decided to start cycling the 8 mile commute to work in London, gaining confidence, and discovering the joy of riding. While training for a London to Oxford ride, she found her love of longdistance cycling and bought a road bike. When Michelle innocently googled “How long does it take to cycle across Canada” she discovered the world of bike touring. After a decade in London, she was captivated by the idea of spending the summer on a bike exploring her home country of Canada and started planning. A year later, with her partner and a new touring bike, she started off on her first

bike tour, 4100 miles from Vancouver to Halifax over 75 days. She has since discovered a love of climbing and has cycled some of the cols of the Tour de France and completed various bike tours in the UK. For 2018 Michelle is challenging herself by participating in the Vatternrundan ride, a 300km ride around a lake in Sweden with 27 000 other cyclists. She shares her cycling adventures along with advice and gear reviews on her YouTube channel Ride On cycling (link via edfoc.org.uk). Divided - the film Times 2 0:00 -21:10 VENUE 16 Pleasance Theatre, EH8 9TJ First shown in March and back by popular demand, the Adventure Syndicate’s film Divided tells the story of an expedition that didn’t quite go to plan, but was all the richer for it. The Tour Divide route follows the spine of the Rockies from Canada to Mexico, with just under 20 Everests’ worth of climbing. The rules are simple: eat and sleep when you like, but the clock never stops. Follow the exact route. Remain completely selfsupported. And dodge bears, lightning storms, snow and snakes. Lee Craigie and Rickie Cotter self-filmed the whole way.
The Adventure Syndicate is a collective of female endurance cyclists who aim to increase self-belief and confidence in others (especially in women and girls) by telling inspiring stories, creating an encouraging community, and delivering enabling workshops and training. To the Dutch, cycling is as normal as breathing. They don’t think about it, they just do it. Perhaps the fact that they don’t think about it is the key to the bicycle’s success in the Netherlands. However, because they do not give cycling a second thought, they don’t really know what the deeper needs of cyclists are. In this documentary film ‘Why we cycle’, the Dutch filmmakers take a ride with ordinary cyclists and specialists from a variety of disciplines. These conversations uncover some obvious and some more hidden effects of cycling on people, on society, and on the organization of cities and communities. The film will be followed by a panel discussion on what Scotland can learn from the Netherlands. £11 (£9 concession)

The Original Edinburgh Night Ride Times
3:00 - (finishing with 2 breakfast Sat 16 June) VENUE 6 Outside Leith Cycle Co, 276 Leith Walk, EH6 5BX If you’ve never cycled through the night, on quiet roads, here is your chance to give it a try: the ride (approx. 60 miles/100 km) takes place around the summer solstice, with groups accompanied by experienced ride leaders. We’ll be making our way along a new mystery route through scenic East Lothian at an easy pace (~12mph rolling speed), with a rest stop and refreshments around half-way, before heading back into town to finish with breakfast. Our mechanical support partner Leith Cycle Co will again open from 22:00 for any last-minute needs and accompany the ride. You can also book your bike in for discounted tune-up during the week before the ride (proof of registration required). In its first year, The Edinburgh Night Ride was described as a ‘magical experience’ despite the downpours, the following years were dry and we were told it kept getting even better - so we are doing it again. For more information and booking (over 16 years old only), see edfoc.org.uk. £30

“Lived in Edinburgh all my 40+ years and never ventured out in the dark on the bike. Thank you for the experience.” “I was a little nervous in advance (thinking it would be full of racing snakes wanting to go flat out), but it was absolutely fantastic very enjoyable and at a perfect pace.” “Found the attitude of the ride leaders and their assistants great. Very supportive and friendly. Was greatly impressed by the whole organisation of the ride. THANKS” “For me, it was definitely long enough to be challenging, but with the right speed to make it a thoroughly joyful experience. Absolutely loved it, many thanks to all leaders and organizers!”

Pilates and Yoga are now used by many professional cyclists as an integral part of their training. This is because both Pilates and Yoga work ALL of the body’s muscles, both core and superficial.
The 4th Power of Food Festival invites you to two guided rides of Edinburgh’s community food gardens. These will be expertly led by partners Sustrans in a friendly and inclusive group.
These specially designed classes will stretch the areas that get very tight from cycling, such as the quads, hip flexors and hamstrings, as well as increasing core strength and focusing on the upper-body areas that cyclists often neglect.
The free weekend event when community food gardens in and around Edinburgh invite the general public to come and explore, hear their stories, be inspired and entertained. https://poweroffoodfestival. wordpress.com/

Graham and Nina met while studying Landscape Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art- Graham surfs, Nina doesn’t, but together they cycle. In May 2017 they gave up our jobs and flat, distributed house plants and put possessions in storage to cycle the length of the Atlantic coast of mainland Europe. The plan: to keep the sea on the right and head south. No GPS, no sponsors, no deadline. With a borrowed trailer turned into surfboard rack, they set off, with the first 13 miles to the ferry terminal as their test ride. Six months, three countries, some incredible strangers and 3,333 miles later they are back in Edinburgh to share their story and inspire you to set off on your own two-wheeled adventure. Free
11:00 -14:00 TBC/Create your own!
Members of the public are invited to reclaim parking spaces to celebrate our urban space and paint a vision for a future beyond the private car. Creative uses of the spaces with props and activities welcome – how about: Deck chairs, tea sets, bookcases, carpets, hammocks, bikes, fake grass, planters, bunting, face painting, table tennis tournaments, picnics, yoga sessions, storytelling, fortune telling, bike workshops? Urban air pollution is estimated to cause over 200 early deaths annually in Edinburgh each year and traffic has a lot to do with the problem. Join Friends of the Earth Scotland’s Air Pollution Campaign to showcase how a redesign of the urban realm and more creative and inclusive use of space is improves both air quality and our collective community spirit! Stand-up Comedy - The Freedom Machine Times 19:00 -20:00 VENUE 16 Pleasance, EH8 9TJ Using a mix of stand-up comedy and audio-visual inserts, Elaine Gallagher’s show will explore the parallels between cycling and feminism. The history of cycling mirrors the history of feminism Towards the end of the 1800’s, the bicycle became a source of unprecedented liberty for so many women, and was seen a threat to the established social order. The notion of women travelling around unchaperoned was at best challenging, and for many unacceptable and dangerous. Elaine’s show will chart the origins of the bicycle and its role in granting freedoms to women, including its significant role in female suffrage. As we mark 100 years of female suffrage in the UK and Ireland, it seems timely to discuss the subject of women, independence and hard-fought freedoms. £11 (£9 concession)

The Life Cycle Biodiversity Bike Ride Times 18:30 -20:00 VENUE 16 Pleasance, EH8 9TJ In 2017/18 Kate, aka @CarbonCycleKate, rode the length of South America on ‘Woody’, a bicycle she built herself at the Bamboo Bicycle Club from bamboo grown at Cornwall’s Eden Project. From Colombia to Cape Horn, (or as close as you can get to it on a bike). Kate and Woody travelled for 8,288 miles/13,338 km, following the spine of the Andes through an astonishing variety of landscapes and ecosystems. The aim was to explore biodiversity loss and use the adventure story to help raise awareness and inspire action on this hugely important but relatively neglected global challenge. En route, Kate, who rode most of the journey solo, met some truly inspiring people. Kate will share pictures and stories of her adventure, the highs and lows, the challenges, the people and places and of course, the bamboo bike. Kate gave a talk about her previous ‘Adventure Plus’ journey, The Carbon Cycle, at the 1st Edinburgh Festival of Cycling in 2013 - a ride from Texas to Alaska exploring climate change. From zero to 200 miles of cycle route: 40 years of cycle campaigning Times 1 9:00 -21:00 VENUE 15 Augustine United Church,
EH1 1EL
“Many councillors have never before considered the needs of cyclists, and do not believe that there is a large demand for better cycling facilities,” Spokes 1978. “Spokes led that charge, which was a lonely position when Spokes began … but they were right,” Cllr Adam McVey, Leader of Edinburgh City Council, 2017. Hear how cycling went from being an outdated eccentricity, forbidden in parks and with no funding, to an accepted part of transport, making up 8% of commuter trips and 10% of the Edinburgh Council transport budget. In Spokes’s first 15 or so years public support was weak, cycling was seen as abnormal, and so councillors concentrated on politically easy opportunities – mainly the extensive disused rail paths. Even a Middle Meadow Walk cycleway was hugely controversial and took 7 years to achieve. But these measures began to increase cycle use. In the second 15 years, with numbers of cyclists rising, the public began to see cycling as more ‘normal’, and councillors found the courage to install widespread on-road coloured cycle 34 facilities, despite motorist opposition. The widespread facilities greatly
increased public awareness of cycling as an accepted transport mode, and numbers continued rising. But now more people experienced ‘car in cycle lane’ problems, health awareness grew, and so did knowledge of cycling infrastructure in Europe. Now councillors found the courage to move to the current stage – on-road segregated provision. When Spokes began its first campaign, one Edinburgh Councillor said: “Spokes can get lost and take its Commie friends with it.” Now, at Spokes’s 40th anniversary, Lothians MSP Alison Johnstone said, “Cycling in this city would not have come on … we would not have had 10% of Edinburgh’s transport budget spent on cycling if it wasn’t for Spokes.” After the talk, there will be plenty of time for discussion. Exhibition from 19:00. Talk from 19:30. Q&A from 20:30. Stall with maps and leaflets. £5 Adult £3 Concession
