Welcome 2017 is the 200th anniversary of the first recognised cycle ride - when Karl Drais rode his new invention to the pub. This momentous occasion needs to be celebrated, so it is only fitting that the 5th edition of the Edinburgh Festival of Cycling showcases all aspects of cycle culture, including its rich history. The simple act of cycling can change lives and transform places, we have “Mr Guardian Bike Blog”, Peter Walker, talking about How Cycling Can Save the World, Rebecca Lowe pedalling against prejudice, Michael Hutchinson reflecting on 200 years on two wheels, and Cycologic: changing the world one bicycle at a time Amanda Ngabirano, the woman bringing Dutch style infrastructure to Africa. If you want to try out something new, how about a spin round the velodrome, testing an e-bike, a treasure hunt by bike, pootle between bookshops, or ride through the night? Exploring human resilience using the example of cycling. Where does it come from? How can we get more of it? Are we really suffering? Can we all achieve more than we thought?

Edinburgh Road Club invites you to come and ride the 42 degree banking of Edinburgh’s own velodrome which was used for two Commonwealth Games and provided the training ground for Sir Chris Hoy.

Cycling and tram injuries in Edinburgh

Understanding of tram related injuries is poor despite the increasing number of cities developing tram systems. A retrospective review of all tram injuries presenting to NHS Lothian was undertaken by surgeons at the Edinburgh Orthopaedic Trauma Unit based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Professor Chris Oliver (@CyclingSurgeon) will describe 252 tram injuries and the treatment required. Results show that push-bike riders are very susceptible to tram related injuries with the vast majority of accidents not involving collisions. The injuries have significant resource requirements and cause both physical suffering and financial loss to those affected. Free

Somewhere in a German forest 200 years ago, during the darkest, wettest summer for centuries, the story of cycling began. Calls to ban it were more or less instant. Re:Cyclists is the tale of what happened next, of how we have spent two centuries wheeling our way about town and country on bikes – or on two-wheeled things that vaguely resembled what we now call bikes. Michael Hutchinson picks his way through those 200 years, discovering how cycling became a kinky vaudeville act for Parisians, how it became an American business empire, and how it went on to find a unique home in the British Isles. Re:Cyclists looks at how cycling became the sport, the pastime and the social life of millions of ordinary people, how it grew from its Regency beginnings and how it suffered through the 1960s and ’70s. At, the dawn of the 21st century it rose again, much changed but still ultimately just someone careering along on two wheels. The Freedom Machine: Woman’s Early Uses of the Bicycle Times 2 0:00 – 21:00 VENUE 15 Assembly Roxy, EH8 9SU Lena Wånggren, a Research Fellow in English Literature at the University of Edinburgh, discusses the early history of women’s cycling. The advent of the safety bicycle and pneumatic tyres in the 1880s sparked a cycling craze and made cycling accessible to the middle and working classes. While the bicycle’s radical potential was soon taken up as a vehicle for class organisation by socialist campaigners, it also – and perhaps to a larger degree – became a symbol for female freedoms. Allowing women to travel unaccompanied, the bicycle provided a sense of freedom not experienced before. In 1896 no less than three guidebooks for female cyclists appeared, and the woman cyclist became a much debated figure in both the popular and medical press. This talk explores these women’s early uses of the bicycle, and the perceived dangers of women’s cycling. £10 Adult £9 Concession Multi ticket deal available

open from 22:00 for any last-minute needs and provide mechanical support during the ride. You can also book your bike in for discounted tune-up during the week before the ride (proof of registration required). Ridequality Epic Ride Times 9 :15 - 17:00 VENUE 19 The Meadows (where all the

paths meet), EH8 9LD

Ridequality - together we improve. Cycling is often highly male-dominated at club and competitive level. The introduction of female-only events such as the Rapha Women’s 100 provides a great opportunity to remove the initial intimidation and comparison against men. However, there are many clubs that want to encourage and support women to take up club riding without resorting to women only events. Inclusion is better than isolation. After the success of the first event in 2016, the ride will leave the Meadows at 9:30am. Groups of riders of varying speeds will be led between checkpoints ( aka cafe stops) over a distance of either 100 or 130 km, giving you the opportunity to challenge yourself. Groups will be staying together on the flat and re-group at the top of climbs so no- one will be left behind. Places can be booked via a link on the EdFoC website, with bookings opening in May. Free

This years front cover celebrates the 200th anniversary of the first recognised cycle ride when Karl von Drais rode his new invention to the pub. The cover was created by Andy Arthur, a freelance digital illustrator from Edinburgh, Scotland. He likes to use bold, bright colours and clean, geometric shapes in his illustrations but most of all he like to convey a sense of fun and humour. He is inspired by classic illustrated poster advertising from the 1950s and 1960s and to this he adds the inspiration from what he enjoys in life; bicycles and bike culture. For reasons best known to himself, he works under the moniker of the Magnificent Octopus.
