The Brent Star Report Bubba D. Licious 22 Years of Fun and Fundraising!

O

k readers, pull out your Bingo sheets, Bubba just called out “S7” as in Starbucks off of 7th street near Bulldogs. That’s where we agreed to meet. I’m excited to meet one of my favorite emcees in this city, the legendary Bubba D. Licious! The first damn thang I wanted to know was WHERE did she get that name from? As she pulled out a bottle of coke from her bag (“well sorry Brent but Starbucks only sells Pepsi”), she told me about the time she was on the softball team for the Armory (back in 1899…no, I meant 1989) and how each player had to do drag once. It was her time and she needed a name. Her then roommate told her “well my drag name was “Trisha Licious”) and it just happens that Bubba was chewing bubba gum (light bulb moment), “You know, I’ll just call myself “Bubblicious”, she thought! The “D” was added later for legal purposes b/c the Bubblicious gum folks actually sent her a “cease to exist” letter forcing her to change her name. Just like the gum though, Bubba is full of fun and she’s also known for raising money for charities either during her shows or through her well known Bingo gigs. Speaking of which, she’s about to call out another number. “A1”. A as in the Armorettes, the successful camp drag group she joined that started it all. Brent: How did you become an Armorette, the multi million fun raising organization?

Bubba: Originally, I had no intentions whatsoever to become one. Around the same time when I finally decided to do drag for the softball team, the Armorettes also decided to hold auditions (before, they just selected the girls). After they saw my number, I was chosen. My dress was made of bubble gum rappers and my white pumps were covered in chewed psychedelic colored bubba gum. Of course it dried by time I went on stage. Brent: Too funny and cute. Which entertainer was your biggest influence back then?

Bubba: Um, I will have to say my influence for doing the campy comedy was Maytag, a very popular Armorette of the day. This was probably before your time. Hell, I remember when this Starbucks was a hamburger place, called Krystals, and of course that condo next door was Backstreets. And next to Backstreets was the Armory where Maytag and I designed the showroom. I remember when we used to run in to host the show a quarter to nine (on Sundays) and throw on some lip stick, wig and no panty hose, no shaved legs…But it was never about what we looked like but what we said once we got on those mics. That 14 davidatlanta

was back in the day when folks would line up 2 hours before the show just to get in. We haven’t had that kind of entertainment in 15 yrs, but of course neither has the Armory. I miss that place. Brent: So you and Maytag were like a team?

Bubba: Yea and we were the only emcees. Later we became best friends. To us, it was like we shared ‘one mind’ because of how well we played off each other and pretty much completed each other’s sentences. We never rehearsed or planned what we were gonna talk about and ppl loved our adlib. The whole cast was good back in the day. Today they’re still raising a lot of money and I hear they’re back at Burkharts on Sundays. Brent: Yep. So after the Armory closed, you retired from the Armorettes after 12 years. What did you do next?

Bubba: The next number I’m pulling up is “N10 ” as in Nikimotos on 10th street. As soon as I retired, I started getting phone calls. And Nikimots wanted me to be the host of their drag show, ‘Dragamaki’. It was the first show where I got paid for hosting. Before it was all for charity.

Bubba’s now charity of choice is P.A.L.S. in which she’s been raising money for the last 15 years. It’s a group that aid the pets of ppl living with HIV/AIDS or other terminal illness. Through this group, Bubba has raised money in all kinds of fun ways like hosting a fundraiser cruise trip, selling Bubba’ merchandise like her famous bobble heads—(complete with her pearls, mini beer bottle in one hand and mic in the other), but her favorite gig with them is BINGO! You can now catch her every 2nd Wednesday at the Jungle. Brent: So where else can we catch you these days?

Bubba: Las Margaritas on Mondays for the Dragamundo show. It’s been going really well. Queen Latifah was in the audience a few weeks ago and you can be our special guest next time.

I had fun doing this interview and it was educational for me. I love your work Bubba! Until next week, don’t read the girls, instead read The Brent Star Report! Where to catch Brent Star: Mondays at Einsteins (with RuPaul’s contestants Nicole Paige Brooks of season 2 and Mariah Paris Balenciaga of season 3), Saturdays at Tijuana Garage Thursdays and Sundays once a month at Burkharts and everywhere else that pays! www.facebook.com/Mr.BrentStar

Question

Ask Momma Mona Dear Momma Mona,

I recognize the sociologist in you! Sociology was one of my more interesting classes in college. I had not thought about “the sociological lens” in quite some time, but glad to be reminded that our experiences and placement in life really do color how we perceive everything. I rejected my “placement” from an upper class home in Manhattan for really stupid reasons --- in retrospect. I was rebellious, angry, and wanted to show my dad…..something. Wasn’t sure what, but I was just really angry. I hated my dad. I hated everything about him. He only visited a few times a year over dinner and seemed to be pushing me to be tougher the few times he was around. I knew he would never accept me, so I felt righteous in taking all I could for as long as I could. I even took a tour of Europe for over a year between degrees. He had divorced my mom within the first few years when I was only two. She says he has always been good to her and to me and used to shame me into being polite during our two or three dinners a year.

My dad is gay! I won’t go into any details, but it was in the local newspapers, which is how I found out. That really changed my perspective! To what, I’m still not clear, but I’ve been so stunned that I’ve been deplete of emotion. Here I’ve hidden from him, so sure he would reject me and judge me and he’s been gay all along! So here’s the Momma Mona question: Should I reach out to him and if so, how? We’ve not been in physical contact for about 10 years, counting the past year.

Gay Shocked

Answer

Now here’s the part that will blow your mind ------ my dad is gay!! I just found out about four-months ago and I’m 38!

Dear Gay Shocked,

Quite ironic, wouldn’t you say?!? So this puts your dad’s age at around 60-ish? Let’s think about this.

You are from an upper class family position, which probably means your dad was from an upper class family. Upper class begets upper class. He may or may not have had it worse than you in feeling a need to hide the fact that he is gay. Or, given his position in life and the historically negative time towards gays, maybe he had suppressed his true identity and it simply took him until later in life to come out. Meredith Baxter the movie star mom did not come out until her mid50s and claims to not have even realized it. Also, the upper class has a different value system in that as long as one is discreet in their personal affairs, all is well. I could offer all types of projections of what could have happened.

From your letter, you write very well. Perhaps you could write your dad a letter stating how you found out and that you want to reach out to him. If you’ve not come out to him, now would be a very easy time to do so. Plan to meet. If he is still in Manhattan, ask if you could come visit for a day or two. Or invite him to Atlanta. You could even say you will be in New York on business and would like to meet for lunch or dinner. With your dad having “your story”, it may make it easier for him to share his story. You two have quite a bit of catching up to do! My Best,

Momma Mona

Star Struck, Openly Gay Young Actor Rising to Fame By Jesse A. Hancock

Where to see Cayce: “Bad Programmer,” premiering May 2 as a web series online “Teen Wolf” the series, premiering on MTV in June “Vampire Diaries,” filming again in April for season three, premiering fall 2011 On Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/ theofficalcaycemusic On Twitter at @caycemusic

On MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/justcayce

Being too busy can be a good thing. It keeps some people out of trouble while motivating others to higher levels of achievement. It’s very common for people to have more than one job these days. Why just focus on one thing? Cayce Guest knows this feeling all too well. Only in his very early 20s, he’s starring in two television shows this year. He’s also starring in a new web series. Oh, and he has a budding music career as well. With all he is working on, he says it’s such a challenge just to stay organized. Guest said he thought he could handle it all on his own at first and joked with his mom that he was going to manage himself so he could keep some of the income to himself. Now he “has people” who organize his days and weeks. He has to. “I’m so unorganized,” said Guest. “I try to keep it all on my phone. I try to fit 30 hours into a 24-hour day.” Guest went to New York recently to sign paperwork for ‘Teen Wolf.’ It’s a new show in the works modeled after the 80s movie starring Michael J. Fox. He just finished filming his character’s part.

“I basically had to sign over my face so I can’t sue them for putting me on MTV,” said Guest. “It’s very exciting.” You will be able to see a lot of Cayce this year. His star is rising. 28 davidatlanta

David: What can viewers expect with the new ‘Teen Wolf’ on MTV?

Cayce: It’s sort of a redo of the 1985 film starring Michael J. Fox, but it’s been changed a lot to attract today’s teenagers. It’s a little more provocative and dramatic. It stars Tyler Posey, who played Jennifer Lopez’s son in the movie ‘Maid in Manhattan.’ It’s about a teenager who gets bitten by a wolf and suddenly has all these powers.

David: What can you tell us about your character on the show?

Cayce: I started out as a featured extra, a lacrosse team player. Then they started using me as a stand-in for one of the main cast members. Tyler Posey and I made a joke one day on set, and the director asked me if I could act. I said, ‘Hell yea.’ He liked me and auditioned me. Now basically I’m a second unit character, which means my character can be cut out if the scenes are running too long. My character will be a regular on season two. My character is one of the students, but he has a secret, which I can’t tell you about yet. He kind of idolizes Tyler Posey’s character. David: How did you get the part?

Cayce: I actually saw the audition on Craigslist. The ad said they were looking for extras and I thought it was probably fake. I e-mailed and they emailed me back. Then things progressed pretty quickly and I made it onto the show. David: What role do you play on ‘Vampire Diaries?’

Cayce: I kind of haven’t got started on that yet. We are still working out contracts, and filming starts in

I guess I have enough drama in my life to do a reality show. I want to kick the Kardashians off the air.

April for the new season. I’ve done some featured extra work with the show already. I don’t know much about my role yet, but I know I will be one of the vampires. David: What else are you working on as an actor?

Cayce: I was just cast as a character on a new web series called ‘Bad Programmer.’ It is like ‘The Big Bang Theory’ in that it’s about a bunch of geeks who work in a tech shop and start hiring these beautiful girls. The geeks don’t really know how to cope with the girls. My character, Ryan, is an unpaid geeky intern. Ryan is basically the go-to gopher. He is one of the regulars. The geeks design apps for iPhones, and Ryan falls in love with a holographic female, who is created by mistake. This creates the drama on the show. The holographic girl is played by an actress. We’re signing on for five seasons, which is so exciting. The first season airs in May. The producers of this show are from Red Light Productions, who also produce Teen Wolf. Chris Duncan is an amazing producer and director. He’s done a lot of writing but also worked on ‘The Guild,’ another web series that is doing so well. On its third season it had 65 million views. I just love him. He also wants me to tape a reality show pilot as an openly gay actor and singer. I guess I have enough drama in my life to do a reality show. I want to kick the Kardashians off the air. David: Are you from Atlanta, and what’s your acting and singing background?

Cayce: I am a true Georgia Peach. I started acting in commercials when I was five. I went to high school here in the city at the Dekalb School for the Arts. When I started in theater and dance, I dropped out of regular school and was home schooled because I was traveling and studying so much. I graduated from Faith Academy. I did about a year of college but wasn’t feeling it. It just wasn’t’ for me. Like a true queen, I was wrapped up in musical theater. I liked it but didn’t love it. I auditioned for season six of American Idol, almost five years ago. I didn’t get as far as I wanted with that and started singing with Jan Smith Studios. It’s in Decatur, and she’s a worldrenowned vocal coach. About a year ago I moved to Nashville to record my demo. I didn’t like the country stuff in Nashville and ended up moving back to Atlanta and worked with Grammy Award winning producer Bill Hume, who has worked with Universal Records for a while. I’ll be releasing my first single hopefully soon.

David: How challenging is it as an openly gay actor or singer? Cayce: It has already gotten a lot easier. When I first started in musical theater, there were a lot of gay actors, of course. When I got my first publicist and manager, they were very iffy about me coming out as a gay male singer. I’ve always been open and never wanted to go back into the closet. I’m always going to be open. I don’t give a crap if people like me or not. I have no problem playing straight roles. I would love to play some gay roles, too, but haven’t had the opportunity yet. Thanks to a lot of gay celebs like Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch, and Ryan Murphy, it’s a lot more accepting now than it used to be. It has all lined the pavement for gay actors and singers to be more open about their sexuality. For teenage girls, it’s kind of cool now to have a gay bff. I haven’t had any challenges as a gay actor. David: Does your family support you?

I have no problem playing straight roles. I would love to play some gay roles, too, but I haven’t had the opportunity yet. Thanks to a lot of gay celebs . . . it’s a lot more accepting now than it used to be. It has all lined the pavement for gay actors and singers to be more open about their sexuality. Cayce: Yes. My mom is especially supportive. She swears she is God’s gift to gays. She is very open. Most of my family lives here in Georgia. A lot of my family thinks it’s cool to see me on TV. David: Do you want to pursue acting or singing more in the long run?

Cayce: At this point I’d say acting, but I love singing, too. Nowadays it’s not easy to make money off singing. I really want to be in a gay independent film one day, more of a drama like something by Nicolas Sparks . . . but gay. ‘Brokeback Mountain’ was good but so depressing. I want heterosexual audiences to see that the gay lifestyle is not just flaming queens and drug and alcohol abuse. We aren’t all like Jack on ‘Will and Grace.’ Having a movie with a stable gay relationship will help change the mindsets of a lot of people. David: Is Atlanta the right place to be?

Cayce: Oh yes, definitely. It’s the Hollywood of the South. A lot of different shows are filming here because it’s cheaper and there are tax credits. Plus, there is a lot of talent here. David: Are you single?

Cayce: I do have kind of an on-again off-again ex. It’s giving me gray hairs at age 22. David: Do you get star struck working around famous actors?

Cayce: Yes, because you see them on TV, but when you see them in person it’s cool. The most star struck I got was one time in Nashville. I was waiting in line at a coffee shop when all of a sudden this 7 foot black man came in. He was tall and muscular and covering these two people, who turned out to be Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal. I thought I was going to pee my pants. I almost died, not for Taylor Swift but for Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s so cool to meet famous people. They are just people, but they make a lot more money than the rest of us. davidatlanta 29

La Nota Rosa

By Luis Chiruco

CASUALIDAD NO CASUAL

...got leche? 34 davidatlanta

Making Music Together

By Jesse A. Hancock

David Magazine: Where are you from, and what is your music background? Do you play any instruments other than violin?

T

here are two golden rules for any orchestra: start together and finish together. The audience doesn’t give a damn what goes on in between. Those were the words of English conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, best known for his association with the London Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra, a growing LGBT-friendly orchestra that rehearses in Decatur, is learning all about starting and finishing together and about what it takes to succeed, under the direction of its first female conductor, Mirna Ogrizovic-Ciric. The group began in 2004 when four instrumentalists and a choral director met with the idea of forming an allinclusive LGBT orchestra in metro Atlanta, inspired by a similar ensemble in Minneapolis. The group held its first rehearsal in January 2005, and Mitch Weisiger conducted the inaugural concert at St. Mark United Methodist Church in November that same year.

There are approximately 50 musicians currently in the orchestra. Anyone interested in joining can go to atlantaphilharmonic.org for information. The orchestra rehearses every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at North Decatur Presbyterian Church in Decatur. The next concert is Saturday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. The soloist is Andrew Sords, a young, promising violinist from Ohio who will perform the Beethoven Violin Concerto. The other pieces on the program are Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony and Borodin’s Polovetsian Dances.

Interview with Mirna Ogrizovic-Ciric:

David Magazine: How long have you been conducting the APO, and how did you get involved?

Mirna: I was appointed music director in 2009. I applied for the position and was one of several conductors who interviewed and auditioned for the position. The connection and good energy between the orchestra and me was instant; it was a perfect match. I enjoyed the people and the great atmosphere and naturally that produced some good results during the audition process and made our first concert a big success. The orchestra had the opportunity to vote for the conductor they liked best at the end of the season that year. I was very excited when I heard they voted for me. I fell in love with the people and was happy it was mutual. 38 davidatlanta

Mirna: I was born in Croatia but lived my whole life in Belgrade, Serbia. I started playing violin when I was six. My parents were not musicians but had great appreciation for music and realized I was very talented. Music education in what was Yugoslavia back then was free, but only the most talented were accepted at elementary music schools and, later, music high schools and conservatory. I spent much of my childhood practicing violin and going to various competitions. Eventually, I entered conservatory in Belgrade and got my first full-time job teaching violin in an elementary music school in Belgrade. After graduating from conservatory, I won an audition and became assistant concertmaster of Radio and Television of Serbia Symphony Orchestra, a professional orchestra. During my couple of years there I played with many famous soloists and under many famous conductors. That is where my idea of becoming conductor was born, but I had to wait a couple of years before it became reality. It was in Atlanta, at Georgia State University, where I decided I wanted to pursue a degree in conducting. I finished my Master’s there, followed by my Doctorate at University of Georgia. In addition to being a conductor and a violinist, I also play the viola and piano. David Magazine: How does the APO compare, in regards to talent, to other groups you conduct or have conducted? How does it compare to the Atlanta Symphony in your opinion?

Mirna: The APO is a volunteer orchestra, and it is hard to compare that type of orchestra to a professional orchestra such as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The APO is a very young group, and the quality is already on a very impressive level. To me, what matters the most, is that we can see a constant improvement in the quality of our performances. Every concert is better than the last. Our repertoire has dramatically changed in the past two years, and the orchestra is now capable of performing advanced classical repertoire. David Magazine: What goals do you have for this orchestra? What have you accomplished so far? Mirna: When I first started conducting the APO, my goal was to establish a regular season that would involve soloists, collaborations and performances of major works of classical repertoire. Also, I wanted the orchestra to expand and become an integral part of the community. I am very happy with what we have accomplished in such a short time. Right now, we are working on becoming one of the strongest volunteer groups in this part of United States. We are focusing on increasing our membership, building the audience, and becoming more interesting for potential donors. I believe that we are unstoppable, and that sky is the limit.

David Magazine: In what ways, if any, has conducting a mostly-LGBT orchestra affected your career? Mirna: I have been so busy with the APO since my appointment that I have not had a chance to think of how it affects my career, haha. I think being a music director of any orchestra is a very challenging position, especially for a woman. Conducting this type of group certainly gives more credibility to any conductor and adds a whole new level of options. I have had a chance

to make more connections within my profession and have been offered a couple of guest conducting opportunities. David: As a straight woman, have you been surprised in any way by conducting gay musicians? Has it changed or reinforced your feelings towards gay people in any way?

Mirna: I don’t think that there is a difference in how gay people understand and make music. There are no essential differences in conducting an LGBT orchestra as opposed to a traditional straight orchestra when it comes to music making. I would also like to point out that the APO is not strictly an LGBT group and that many of our members are straight. I find it extremely encouraging that we are finally getting over our differences and learning to love and accept each other. However, my communication with these musicians through our music making and during breaks is a lot more open and sincere than what I ever had with any other orchestra I have conducted. I think it is safe to say that my idea of fun is a lot closer to openness and the genuine humor of gay people. I even prefer “drama” over no emotions, haha. Our rehearsals are so much fun. We laugh and just enjoy spending time together. It is easy to forget all the problems that we face as a volunteer group, and for me, all the challenges I face as a conductor. I have also become an advocate of gay rights and have a new understanding of all things that need to be done in order to make things right. David Magazine: Have you ever kissed a girl?

Mirna: Haha, I have not. Gay men in my orchestra say my husband is really handsome, and I trust them. They have great taste.

David Magazine: What are some of the challenges of conducting a volunteer group like this?

Mirna: That is a great question. Some people think conducting is an easy job, but it is a lot harder than it may seem. The biggest challenges for me are concert programming and rehearsal planning. For every piece I consider programming, I first need to make sure we have enough players. I also have to make sure the music is challenging but not too hard for the majority of the players and that it improves the quality of the orchestra but is fun at the same time. Planning a concert like that usually takes a couple of weeks, sometimes even a couple of months. When it comes to rehearsals, I have to consider every little thing when making a plan for how the rehearsals are going to be run. The quality of the performance and overall appeal of the music to the audience directly affects how our audience is going to react to the orchestra and whether we are going to build a bigger audience and inspire people to help the orchestra through donations and involvement. David Magazine: What else do you do professionally? What’s your day job?

Mirna: My day and night job is music. I am a member of the faculty of Berry College in Rome, GA. I teach violin and viola and conduct the Berry

The APO is not strictly an LGBT group. Many of our members are straight. I find it extremely encouraging that we are finally getting over our differences and learning to love and accept each other.

College Symphony Orchestra. I am also a member of the Balkan Quartet, with whom I frequently tour and perform across Southeast.

David Magazine: Are there other musicians in your family? Mirna: My husband, Sinisa, is a violinist as well. We met at a gig in Montenegro. He is a better violinist, but I am a better conductor, haha. I am joking. It is really good to get support from someone who knows a lot about music and orchestra. I always check all my decisions about the APO with him, and he sometimes even initiates some of my projects. David Magazine: Which do you enjoy more, conducting or performing?

Mirna: I enjoy conducting more than playing. Violin is limited to performing only one line of music. When conducting, you shape all the lines of the piece produced by various instruments of the orchestra and create your own personal interpretation through interaction with orchestra musicians. I try to provide general direction and never try to simply impose my ideas. I don’t think of myself as a conductor in the traditional sense but rather more equal among equals. It is a very unique process, and I feel very happy to be able to share my understanding of a piece with other musicians.

David Magazine: How do you choose the music for the orchestra? Mirna: I try to choose works that are appealing for a wide audience. I often turn to my husband and my son for ideas and inspiration. I listen to what musicians have to say and trust their taste. Sometimes I simply program pieces that have personal meaning for me and that I enjoy performing and listening to. • Next concert: Saturday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. • North Decatur Presbyterian Church • 611 Medlock Rd. Andrew Sords, Guest Violin Soloist

Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra Concert 7:30 p.m. March 26, 2011

Guest soloist: Andrew Sords

North Decatur Presbyterian Church 611 Medlock Rd. Decatur, GA 30033 For advance tickets, go to www.atlantaphilharmonic.org

C

ritically acclaimed worldwide as an “absolute wonder,” Andrew Sords has established himself as the preeminent new face of classical violin. Only in his mid-twenties, Sords is already a veteran of the concert stage. He has performed with many orchestras and in countless recital venues across three continents. Born in Newark, Delaware, Sords later moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio, and began his violin studies with Liza Grossman. Sords completed his undergraduate education at the Cleveland Institute of Music. When he isn’t touring, he lives just outside Cleveland, Ohio.

He is the winner of the 2005 National Shirley Valentin Violin Award, the 2004 and 2005 National Federation of Music Clubs Competition, the Fortnightly Music Club of Cleveland and the Festival de la Orquesta Sinfonica de las Americas Competition of the Casals Festival among others. Strongly committed to extending classical music to all, Sords dedicates a portion of his time at nearly all engagements to educational outreach, master classes and programming. 44 davidatlanta

David Magazine: You’ve traveled all over the world as a performer. How do you like touring?

Andrew: It’s great! I’ve only had one weekend off since the New Year, but it’s what I love doing. This is my fifth or sixth year touring as a soloist. This is my job. It’s a fun job, but nonetheless it’s a job. I am the concertmaster for an orchestra in Central Ohio, but I only spend six weeks there. I spend the rest of the year playing as a soloist with other orchestras and in recitals. David Magazine: How did you get into playing violin, and at what point did you decide you wanted to do this as a career?

Andrew: When I was five I started playing piano. Then I saw Itzhak Perlman play the violin on Sesame Street, and, of course, I then had to have a violin, but I never enjoyed practicing. When I was about eleven years old I went to a summer program at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan for musicians, artists and dancers. This was in the late 1990s and everyone there was really good. I thought to myself, ‘How are they so good? They are not only practicing, but also dedicating their entire lives to this.’ The funny thing is that for the three years I attended Interlochen Josh Groban was also there. So there were all these talented people there who were going off and doing great things with their lives. David Magazine: Did you perform with Josh Groban while you were there?

Andrew: Yes, I did perform Fiddler on the Roof with him. This was way before he became so famous. He was around age fourteen or fifteen. It was pre-Ally McBeal.

David Magazine: Who else have you played with, and who would you like to play with?

Andrew: Well, I’d like to play with Lady Gaga, haha. I’ve played with a number of orchestras, probably about 75 total. In that time I’ve played with a lot of great conductors and other musicians. David Magazine: How did the opportunity come up for you to perform here in Atlanta with the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra?

Andrew: Most of the orchestras I play with are mainstream traditional orchestras, but every year I try to work with a different LGBT orchestra. This year the Atlanta Philharmonic is it this year. This fall I’m working again with the Minnesota Philharmonic, which I think is the country’s first LGBT orchestra. I’m proud to say I’m the first classical act to open at a PRIDE festival. These concerts are few and far between, like a few times a year, but I enjoy it and feel it’s good to represent the LGBT community. It’s also good for the LGBT community to see something they don’t see or hear every day.

Every year I try to work with a different LGBT orchestra. The Atlanta Philharmonic is it this year . . . I feel it’s good to represent the LGBT community. It’s also good for the LGBT community to see something they don’t see or hear every day.

David Magazine: What piece will you be performing with the Atlanta Philharmonic at this concert?

Andrew: I’m playing what I think is the greatest concerto ever written. It’s by Beethoven, and it’s a perfect composition. You can’t take one note out of it. It’s just pristine. For me, it’s sort of the pinnacle of concerto literature. I’ve played lots of other symphonies that have been very exciting, but they still can’t touch this Beethoven concerto.

David Magazine: What else will you be doing as a musician while you visit Atlanta?

Andrew: I tour I like to do master classes everywhere I tour, so I’ll be doing a few that week. One at a college and one at an elementary school. This is my first time playing in Atlanta, although I’m at Hartsfield International Airport all the time. When I lived in Dallas in 2007-2008, I was flying through Atlanta so often that I knew the women who worked at the Popeye’s in the C Terminal. They’d be like, ‘Baby, where you flying to today?’ David Magazine: Touring must be fun, but is it stressful, too?

Andrew: Almost every time I travel there’s a delayed flight or two or a cancelled flight. Two weeks ago I lost my luggage. It went to Mexico City when I was coming back from St. Maarten. My luggage went west and I went north. Those things happen, but I get to meet some amazing people and see some great places. I hope Atlanta is nothing less than that. David Magazine: It seems like the arts are being cut so much from education these days. What do you say to young musicians who are considering music as a career?

Andrew: I say they are the luckiest people in the world if they get to do anything in the arts as a career. How many people can wake up every day and really love their jobs? Live your life to the fullest and go for it 110%. There’s a famous tennis player who said, ‘If you take a plate of ham and eggs, the chicken is involved and the pig is committed.’ You have to be committed.

The Frugal Faggot

T

he stereotype that gay men aren’t interested in sports is just that – a stereotype. Just because it seems the majority of us would rather be jamming to the latest Ke-dollar sign-ha single or shopping doesn’t mean that there aren’t those who would rather be watching the game. I find myself somewhere in between. I don’t particularly care for Ke$ha (I’m more of an Adele fan) and I would probably rather spend my time shopping (if I had the money) but I’ve lived in Atlanta for 7 years and have never attended an Atlanta Braves game. Every year as I watch guys (and girls) around me getting pumped up for opening day, I promise myself that this will be the year I attend a game (or two). It’s not that I have an aversion to sports-like activities. I played soccer and ran cross-country in high school; I love playing ultimate frisbee and enjoy hiking and camping. I’ve just never understood sitting and watching anything being done. I want to participate. I never learned to throw a football - I was always the receiver (take that as you will) since I was pretty quick. I tried golf once and didn’t have the patience for it – I’m much more of a putt-putt guy. I was 4 foot nothing until 9th grade so basketball was never even a remote possibility for me. Since I collected all those cards when I was a kid, baseball is about the only sport I could see myself sitting and watching and possibly enjoying. With 22 days until opening night at Turner Field, I find myself making those same “I’m-gonnago-this-year” promises. So in light of my renewed commitment, here are some deals for all sorts of “fans”. The True Tomahawk: You’re a diehard Braves fan. You know the stats of every player past and present. Your closet is full of your favorite players’ jerseys. Season tickets are definitely the way to go for you. The Braves ticketing sites has many different options starting as low as $4 per game.

The Bobby Cox: You long for the days of yester-year when the Braves dominated baseball. You still have your 1995 World Series Pendant hanging in your bedroom. You can’t stand another season of being let down. There are several options outside of the season tickets to help save you money. There are weekend only, half season, 20-game and 5-game packages to help keep a few extra dollars in your bank account.

46 davidatlanta

The Lazy Outfielder: You’re fine either way with the game. You don’t pay much attention until your hear that loud crack of the bat and when you look up everyone is going wild. There are 21 Value Dates during the season where you can save up to 34% off your tickets. These tickets must be purchased in advance but most Monday-Thursday home games between April 12th-May 17th and August 30th – September 28th have some sort of discount pricing. For example, terrace level tickets (normally $38) are only $25 for these games. The Broke Batboy: This is the category I fall into. I have many other things I have to and would like to spend my money on but this season there are several pricing options that don’t make going to a game a bank account strikeout. First, for every home game there are 186 Skyline Seats available for purchase. These tickets go on sale 2 ½ hours before every game and are only $1.

I would assume those seats go rather quickly, so there are some additional discount nights throughout the season. There are 7 Buck Belue Nights throughout the season. These are May 2nd and 16th, June 20th, July 25th, August 15th, September 12th and 26th and Lower Level Terrace Reserved tickets (normally $24) are just $5. And as always with valid college, AAA or military ID, fans receive two-for-one Upper Box tickets all season long. With tickets as low as $1 there’s no excuse to not get out there and support the Braves this season. I’m practicing my tomahawk chop as we speak.

Horoscopes Aries It looks like someone needs your help again, but for some reason you aren’t sick to death of being everybody’s superhero. Spring into action and set them right before flying off.

SAGITTARIUS It’s not like anyone hates you — you’re just as lovable as ever. The thing is, you’re moving at your own speed, and when the rest of the world is a little faster or slower, you can’t pick up signals.

TAURUS Relax as much as you can for as long as you can. Some big business is headed your way that will take up more and more of your time — until you have to devote all of your attention to it.

CAPRICORN You have all sorts of personal business to deal with — get to it ASAP. Just make sure your friends, partner(or crush) don’t feel left out. There’s plenty of your love for everyone.

GEMINI Life is as sweet as can be throughout most of the week, and you’re at the center of someone’s world. Later on, maybe next weekt, you’ll get a quick money scare that will confuse you, but not for long.

AQUARIUS Spend some quality time with the gang this week — even if you have to do it online. Your energy is just right for some serious friendly shenanigans, and it’s easy for you to gather people together.

CANCER You’re feeling quite selfish this week — and that’s totally cool! End the month with style, doing whatever you want, whenever you want, and let others do the same. Well, as long as they don’t need you, that is!

PISCES Choose your words with care, because everything has multiple levels of meaning right now — and if romance is on the agenda, it might be even stickier. Try asking a question instead of making a statement.

Leo You’ll start the week feeling fresh and prepared for anything. You’re ready to chat up any hottie who walks your way, but later on, after the weekend someone might throw you for a loop that lasts a little too long. VIRGO You’re all about meeting people right now, and you’ll be able to read them almost perfectly after you chat for just a few minutes. If you’re looking for romance, it will be looking for you. LIBRA You’re all about looks and smarts in balance — you’ve got it, but what about the other folks in your life? Try taking a date to a museum or a concert, or just starting up a deep conversation on a topic that’s important? SCORPIO Tiptoe around roommates and good friends this week — people close to you are on edge. Pretty soon they’ll get over themselves and help you get ready for the big party or event coming up. 52 davidatlanta

Atlanta A to Z

By David C. Muller

EPISODE FORTY-ONE:

“Q is for Project Q” Once upon a time Luke went to a palm reader in Gwinnett County. The palm reader told him, “You must move to Atlanta, Luke, for you will find love there.” The palm reader also told him, “A very bad man is coming to Atlanta, Luke, a very, very evil man…”

Luke was only slightly fearful of the evil villain that was Mr. Pencil. Mr. Pencil had threatened to expose Luke for the drunken slut that he is, he threatened to go to the gay press of Atlanta, he threatened to alert the media: “Now you listen to me, Luke, if you don’t do as I say then I’ll go to every last media outlet in the city. I’ll go to Better Mornings Atlanta, I’ll go to the AJC and I’ll post something on Facebook and Craigslist but, worst of all, Luke.” Mr. Pencil had been very specific: “I’ll give an exclusive to Project Q!” “You wouldn’t dare!” “I certainly would. I mean, come on, Luke. It’s not like anyone is actually reading this series. I could go to that other magazine in Midtown, the local fashion one? But I don’t think anyone reads that magazine, either.” “You’re f*ckin’ crazy, Pencil.” Luke

glowered, “You are positively evil. I bet you’re hearing voices inside that big stupid head of yours.” “You are correct, Luke. I’m hearing two voices,” Mr. Pencil held up two fingers, “One is Southern, the other is from Georgia but no, Luke. If I want to broadcast your dirty laundry for all of Midtown to see then I best stick to Project Q, the only reliable online source for all things gay in Atlanta.” “Now you listen to me, Mr. Pencil.” Luke took his proverbial stand, “While this series might be trite and contrived, implausible and difficult to follow, I think it’s high time to call upon all segments of our gay community to come together in gay pride and gay solidarity. We shall never achieve anything great or spectacular if we instead waste our precious gay time shitting all over one another. No one likes a trivialist, especially a gay trivialist, yet we all engage in it and here in Atlanta, we try to do it on a social-civic level. We homosexuals should unite but, then again, there are

people like you!” “People like me?” Mr. Pencil was offended, “I’m not a community leader of any sort. I’m just a poor old rich man with lots of money. I just want someone young and lithe and gay to love me for me and for my money. Why are you such a prick-tease, Luke?” “You’re nothing but a deranged psychopath.” Luke glared, “The first time I met you, you slipped a rufie in my drink and then you kidnapped me, stripped me naked and taped me to a toilet.” Mr. Pencil shrugged, “I was trying to show you a good time.” “You didn’t even buy me dinner.” “Next time,” Mr. Pencil licked his lips, “I’ll bring you a bright bouquet of flowers.” “Like hell you will.” Luke spat on the old rich bastard, “You keep my name off that website or I swear to God I’ll shave off your left testicle.” “Oh? That means you might touch my penis.” Mr. Pencil felt himself get hard, “Maybe that means you might also suck on it, too?” Luke stifled a thrill of vomit and upchuck: “You are disgusting. You are crude, you are crass, you are old and you are bald.” “But Luke, I am fantastically wealthy. Just look at me,” Mr. Pencil spread his arms long and wide, “I’m covered in feathers!” “I find you physically repulsive.” Luke looked the villain up and down, “Polyester is such cheap fabric.” “I offered you a job, Luke. I wanted to rule the world with you, don’t you remember?” Mr. Pencil wiped saliva from his eye, “I plan to conquer the British and then the French and then the Germans and the Mexicans and the Russians and the Chinese but, before all of that, I want to control Atlanta and the South and I want you to help me.” Luke said, “I ain’t helpin’ you with shit.” Mr. Pencil was not accustomed to being rebuffed, he snapped his fingers in Luke’s face and, in an echo of Glenn Close in ‘Fatal Attraction,’ he said, “I will not be ignored, Dan!” “Dude,” Luke rolled his eyes, “My name isn’t Dan and, if I might add, it seems to me like the writer of this series is cutting and pasting dialog from previously printed episodes.” “I don’t know, Luke. I don’t know why won’t you f*ck me.” Mr. Pencil was hurt, “You go around Midtown f*cking every guy that buys you a drink but you won’t fuck me. Why, Luke? Why won’t you f*ck me?” “You are pathetic, Mr. Pencil.” Luke asked him, “Do you need a recap of everything that’s happened up until now?” “Why yes, Luke.” Mr. Pencil nodded, “I think I do.”

Tune in next week for EPISODE FORTY-TWO: “R is for Recap” “ATLANTA A to Z” would LOVE to hear from you! QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, SUGGESTIONS: We welcome your feedback! Send us an email at: AtlantaAtoZ@DavidAtlanta.com

By Jesse A. Hancock

Blushing Blooms also has a wide selection of fresh orchid compositions, artificial arrangements, artwork, custom artwork and home décor.

Brennen’s business officially opened in early January and is sort of a side business of shops owned by his mother and grandfather. His mother, Kathy Van Mannen, has owned a floral business for 38 years, and his grandfather owned one for over 50 years. Having been in the business “his entire life,” Farlow says it’s in his blood. “I wanted to create more of a floral boutique versus a traditional flower shop,” said Brennen. “So it’s a little more modern, more minimalist, and a little showier. I’ve always thought of naming my own business ‘Blushing Blooms by Brennen,’ ever since I can remember.” Blushing Blooms is ready for your floral needs. See for yourself today.

Protect Your Monster

Bitch Session Saw you waiting in line Friday to get a new I broke up with you because I didn’t like you iPad. Saw you that night at the bar, drunk off anymore. Period. your ass. Today, saw you at Publix buying “Beefy” and “football player build” both food with an EBT card. What a sad loser! mean one thing: fat. Yes dear, I can only imagine the look on your face when I am gone and you find out I left it all to someone else. Payback is a bitch! Where are all the hot guys hiding? Seriously, I am afraid to go out anymore.

Gay marriage is the last thing you queens need to worry about. Try working on how to be monogamous first. To the drag queens who think they are all that, it’s “drag queen” bitch, not “rag queen.” The tired lip sync thrift store and glitter drag you do could not pass the scrutiny of a 100 watt light bulb.

Honey, tossing your legs in the air and shaking your ass does not qualify as exercise! Bless your heart. Just because you’re allowed to smoke in a bar doesn’t mean you should. Go outside and don’t blow your smoke directly at me. Bitch!

Please learn how to merge so I don’t have to wait in traffic because your dumb ass got in a wreck.

I don’t see myself as a selfish bottom if I expect a top to do his job and be a top and give me satisfaction without expecting me to do something in return. Grow some balls and honor your agreements, my ex partner, or get sued! Learn how to text and drive, or don’t do it. Why are you going through my Facebook friends list to try to hook up with people you don’t even know?

It’s time to move. If your dick is small enough to stick through a glory hole, it ain’t big enough for me to be interested. If Atlanta really is the 4th worst city for finding a job, I need to find a sugar daddy.

What exactly is a versatile top? It’s a guy who won’t bottom unless he’s drunk.

Why doesn’t this bar spend a little money and get their music together? It’s always a shame when things are going well and then the The best thing about warmer weather? music cuts out, or karaoke has to end early. Those clingy nylon shorts the straight jocks Bullshit. wear with boxers.

Gotta Bitch?

? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitc ch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? ? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitc ch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch? Bitch?
