Glenn Close reprises steely Albert Nobbs 3 Decades Later
A
by Joseph Brownell
lbert Nobbs is a passionate project that star Glenn Close has been inextricably linked to for over 30 years. Based upon the novella, The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs by George Moore, Close played the title role in the American Premier production during the fifth and final Manhattan Theatre Club Downstage production of the 1981-82 season. In the early 2000’s, Close’s dream of bringing it to the big screen was nearly realized but the project fell apart in production due to financial issues. Fast forward to 2012 where both Close, starring as Albert Nobbs, and Janet McTeer, starring as Hubert Page, have been nominated for Oscars for their performances in the Liddell Entertainment/Roadside Attractions film. You may assume that Nobbs is about sexuality because Close plays the role of a 19th century
hotel waiter, who in order to keep the job, must live life as a man. Sure, interpretation can be made for that case, especially in today’s political climate surrounding equal rights for the LGBT community, but the film strongly centers around gender identification and the implication gender has for one’s career and for societal expectations. Nobbs believes he’s alone with his secret until he meets someone like him, Hubert Pageportrayed with panache by Janet McTeer. Nobbs is thrust into a whole new world of possibilities as Page has been married to a woman for years, even though he himself is a woman. Confused yet? Don’t be. The most affecting scenes of the film are between Nobbs and Page. Close portrays Nobbs with the steely façade that is required of a male in 19th century Ireland but Nobb’s has inevitably lived his life in fear. It’s disappointing for the audience that Close’s performance doesn’t do more to convey or explore that fear. McTeer on the other hand would be a wonderful surprise to win this year’s Oscar for her portrayal of Hubert Page. Unlike Nobbs, Page hasn’t reconciled his fear and brings humor and confidence to the role. The questions Page eventually raises for Nobbs’ character go unanswered by the end of the film, an avenue I wish the story would’ve explored. Nobbs is definitely worth seeing and is playing exclusively at UA Tara on Chesire Bridge. Die-hard fans of Close will find her performance engaging. Personally, I wish we could’ve explored Nobbs’ backstory more completely and focused on the blossoming revelations created by the friendship of Albert and Hubert because in the end that was Nobbs’ only friend.

David Magazine
presents your choices for the
Best of Atlanta 2011 Best Bar to Cruise
Blake’s on the Park You have met your boyfriends there, you run into your ex’s there, and more times than not find your temporary lover there. Regardless, we love to look at the boys at Blake’s.
Best Laid back Bar
Burkhart’s Burkhart’s is the multi level bar that has something for everybody. Large outdoor patio, blackjack table, pool tables, and at least 4 bars… this is an easy place to come hang out and just be yourself with hundreds of your closest friends. Dress up or dress down, nobody really cares, just bring your grade A personality and have a blast.
Best Bar Off the Beaten Path
The Cockpit The Cockpit may be one of Atlanta’s newest additions to the nightlife scene, but it certainly has found its mark in 2011. The bar may not be the biggest space, but it certainly packs a punch. With raging parties, sexy guys, and strong drinks, this bar is certainly worth the (5 minute) drive outside of Midtown. 12 | davidatlanta
NIGHTLIFE Editor’s Choice: Mary’s It may be The Cockpit’s neighbor, but the East Atlanta gay bar is infamous and has helped pioneer bringing people out of Midtown. The sprawling bar taps into alternative Atlanta’s niche gay community and offers outrageous parties, kick-ass bartenders, and some of the best karaoke in the city.
Best Place to Dance
Jungle The 18+ dance club has brought some of the biggest and best names to Atlanta this year as Tommy Frese (co-owner) acts as one of Atlanta’s best hosts and invites you into his house. The drinks are pouring, the talent is spinning, and there is always a perfectly timed drag performance for good measure. The recipe works as the dance floor is always full of sweaty men having a great time.
Best Bar to Pick up a Guy
Eagle If you’re looking for a real man, the Eagle has plenty of them to go around. The hot cubs and bears here know how to have a great time, and apparently, the good times go beyond just the dance floor. Stop in sometime, grab a drink, and make sure you don’t get your hanky code wrong! Be prepared for some great music and an awesome dance floor.
Editor’s Choice:
Heretic
Heretic, who just proudly celebrated its 20th anniversary this past year, has notoriously had sexy boys & men grace the bar each weekend. With a hot dance floor, the men can’t help but take their shirts off, and while there is great eye candy, it’s a great place to meet someone sexy and grab a beer with them. Cheers!
Best Bar to Pickup a Girl
My Sister’s Room Atlanta’s recently reopened girl bar has some of the sexiest ladies in Atlanta coming in to drink, hang out, and party. The newly reopened establishment features a new sports bar vibe, outstanding food, and a great area to hang out and shoot some pool. The girl of your dreams might be playing a round of pool right now; you should stop on in and find her.
Best DJ
Jay McCracken Some of you know him for his music, some of you know him for his killer body, but regardless of the reason, you know who he is. The Atlanta DJ has taken the city by storm for several years now and is getting ready to start the next part of his career in sunny California. We wish him the best of luck as he moves on to bigger and better things (let us hope he doesn’t forget us)!

Best Jukebox
Joe’s on Juniper The oversized electronic jukebox takes up a good part of the wall, but it has all the songs you want to hear. Besides, don’t you hate going to a restaurant and having awful music on in the background? You get to control the songs, you get to set the mood for the party, and Joe’s is the perfect place for a party.
Strongest Drink
Swinging Richards This really should come as no secret to anybody, right? Even the best alcoholics in Midtown can only get down two or three of their super drinks before they are face down, ass up. The bartenders are just as sexy as the dancers, and Swinging Richards has a full lineup of events during the week.
Best Place to Play Pool
Burkhart’s In addition to being the most laid back bar in Atlanta, it also is the hottest spot for a game of pool. It’s hard to find a place to play in Atlanta where you aren’t pushed up against 30 people trying to drink, and Burkhart’s has a great room dedicated to the sport.
Editor’s Choice: Hideaway If you haven’t been to the Hideaway yet, you are missing out on one of Atlanta’s best-kept secrets. The former New Order space has been given a stellar makeover and incorporates a great gaming corner. Complete with dart boards, pinball machines, a blackjack table, a jukebox, and two pool tables, this space really is perfect for those with a competitive edge.

Best Theme Night/Party
Jungle Jungle has been a staple in Atlanta nightlife for close to a decade now, and the parties have stayed original and fresh. This past year Jungle has thrown Fur & Fire parties, Carnivals, and more as they listen to what the community wants and strives to deliver something fun for all. Stay tuned in 2012 as they have a slew of new ideas for massive events they will be throwing!
Best Place to Grab a Beer
Woof’s Beer.... Bear... same thing! Woof’s is Atlanta’s premier gay sports bar and it’s easy to hang out, grab a beer and watch the game on one of their many televisions. It’s the ultimate hangout spot with the guys, a perfect place for Sunday Funday, and if you are hungry, they have a huge menu with options for all. If you are lucky, one of those sexy, hairy bartenders might try to flirt with you.
Best OTP Bar
The New LeBuzz It has been hard for many bars to survive outside of the Midtown area, but LeBuzz proves that it can be done, and done well. The bar is positioned in Marietta, but is known for its amazing shows, pageants, and café. Stop in, catch a great drag show, and sip on a martini. Easy enough, right?
Best Karaoke
Burkhart’s We have all spent time drunk yodeling (er… singing) during karaoke at some random bar, and Burkhart’s has been “blessed” to hear so many of our lovely singing voices throughout the years. Hosted by some davidatlanta | 21
NIGHTLIFE of the most fabulous queens in the city, fantastic sound system, and huge karaoke book to choose songs from, it’s a great place to get your song on. Get there early so you get your chance to practice for that botched American Idol audition. Editor’s Shout Out: We can’t talk about karaoke without giving shout outs to CJ at Mary’s and Brett & Tyler at Felix’s!
Best Bartender
Eddy Herrera @ Burkhart’s While he is a great bartender, lets not forget he is incredibly sexy too. The man can rock out a bar and has a loyal following of customers (maybe for his drinks, maybe because he has a cute ass… who knows). What we do know is this though, he is a fun loving guy and makes a potent drink. Woof!
Best Drag King
Devin Liquor Drag Kings don’t seem to get as much attention as Drag Queens in Atlanta, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have some amazing ones out there! Devin Liquor has broken that barrier and is incredibly well known in Atlanta for his style, look, and authenticity. Keep an eye on him in 2012 as he grows into more venues, competitions, and continues to break down barriers.
Best Drag Queen
Ruby Redd The sassy bingo bitch has delivered raunchy jokes, poured you drinks, and pretended to 22 | davidatlanta
listen as you babble on about your boyfriend issues, but most importantly she has raised lots of money for local charities! This Atlanta icon has a huge heart and has time and time again been there for the community when she has been needed most. If you are looking to get involved in community and charity work, talk to this fine lady right here.
Best Night of the Week To Go Out
Saturdays Lets face it, there is nothing on TV, you haven’t spent half the day in the office, and you can get crazy drunk and then go to brunch in the morning. I mean, who DOESN’T love Saturdays?
Best Overall Bar
Blake’s on the Park Some of you call it “Blakes Church of the Messy”, others call it “The Double Wide Trailer” and then there are those of you who call it “Home” because you practically live there (damn drunks). No matter what you want to call it, the 10th Street hot spot has been a staple in Midtown for over 20 years offering hot boys, drag queens, and some of the drunkest memories we have. Lets face it, who doesn’t love Blake’s? They have fun bartenders, familiar faces, shows every night of the week, and that sassy chick who sits at the door… yes, we’re talking about you Lynn! It defines “Cheers for Queers”, and is really an iconic place that brings us vodka… and lots of joy.
DINING Best Pizza
Mellow Mushroom Mellow Mushroom took it by a landslide, they are best pizza in Atlanta… and lets face it, they have atmosphere, flavor, style and fun. No matter if you are stopping in for a quick slice, pie, salad, or brew they have something for everybody. The one off Monroe also hosts Best Drag Queen – Ruby Redd – for her bingo night each Wednesday! (Don’t forget to check out the coupon in their ad this week!)
Best Mexican & Best Margaritas
Las Margaritas Las Margaritas is known for its amazing latin menu and fantastic margaritas, but part of the charm of Las Margaritas is the strong family bond that runs the restaurant. Papi and Mama are Atlanta icons and their passion for serving up the best latin food and margaritas in Atlanta is what drives their success.
Editor’s Choice for Best Margaritas:
The Original El Taco
Don’t let the campy name fool you, the Fifth Group establishment not only serves up some tasty tacos but also has one of the best tequila collections in the city! The margarita list includes the ever-popular Skinny Margarita (hand crafted from only the freshest ingredients) but also tequila infusions and other specialty drinks. Can’t make up your mind?
The expertly trained staff will help guide you to the perfect drink.
Best Brunch
Einstein’s Sunday Funday comes to mind when you think of Einstein’s brunch. There is nothing better then a fun atmosphere, a mimosa in hand, and a brunch menu that has offerings for everybody from soups/salads to burgers to omelets and traditional brunch items. Order up!
Editor’s Choice:
Sun in My Belly The chic brunch eatery is one of Atlanta’s best-kept secrets, but the word is quickly spreading. The menu features lots of fresh choices with seasonal items, but some of the highlights are the honey glazed bacon and that you can bring your own wine/ champagne there for just a small corking fee. Sit back and enjoy!
Best Coffee
Starbucks The mega coffee shop offers a wide variety of drinks and creates a great vibe to hang out, and work on that novel you probably will never finish. Ansley Starbucks in particular has become an iconic gay hangout, and with the news that Starbucks will soon be rolling out alcoholic beverages to some Atlanta stores, you can only expect the gays will be going much more often! davidatlanta | 23
DINING Best Bloody Mary
R.J Burke at Burkhart’s In one of the worst kept secrets on the Best of 2011 list, most of the city already knew well in advance that this bartender was the winner of this category. We can blame Mr. Herrera for that one! Joking aside, one thing is very serious, and that is R.J’s famous bloody marys. You can catch him tending bar most of the week, so stop in and tip and him well because good bloody marys are a bitch to make!
Best Mimosa
Gilbert’s Who doesn’t love a little OJ with their champagne? It’s the perfect Sunday drink to get the day started and Gilbert’s loves that you come to them for this tasty concoction. With huge windows that look out into 10th street, bring a group of friends, hang out, and throw a few mimosas back – how can the day go wrong with a great start like that?
Best Sushi
Ru San’s Rusan’s has been around for over 20 years as the go to quick sushi spot in Midtown. Rusan’s does a great job offering affordable cuisine while blasting techno dance music over the speakers. Other perks? Lunch buffet, host big groups easily, and sake bombs!!!
Editor’s Choice: Rain Rain is the perfect sushi spot and features an oversized menu with very fresh and well prepared fish options. The staff is well trained and for a neighborhood joint, they keep it 24 | davidatlanta
simple but fun. With authentic cuisine choices on two different types of menus, it’s worth a visit if you have never been.
Best Bar Food
Joe’s on Juniper The famous gay hangout in Midtown offers simple bar cuisine with a twist. Edamame hummus, anybody? While the bar food keeps our stomachs filled, it’s the outstanding bar and drink menu that keeps us coming back… as well as the fun patio, shows/events, sexy staff, and so much more.
Best Local Chef
Kevin Rathbun The Iron Chef contestant is well known in the Atlanta cooking scene for his outstanding restaurants, including Rathbun’s, Kevin Rathbun Steak, and Krog Bar. For those who have had the pleasure of eating at any of his establishments, they can testify that his food is top notch and the atmosphere is perfect for any occasion.
Editor’s Choice: Ria
Pell
Ria Pell is our badass lesbian chef here in Atlanta that brings a flair to her restaurants and the food she presents. Everything is carefully thought out and prepared which is why she is a regular on major cooking shows. We all have been to Ria’s Bluebird (now, that is how you make a biscuit) but her new restaurant Sauced in Inman Park is a fun throwback to mid-century style, and easily one of Atlanta’s most unique and romantic restaurants. Check it out… Valentines Day is right around the corner!
DINING Best Late Night
Waffle House Best Asian
Little Bangkok Cheshire Bridge is famous for several things: strip clubs, all night breakfast joints, and some outstanding restaurants. Little Bangkok easily falls into the “outstanding” category. With great Thai and Chinese menus, the hole-in-the-wall place stays busy all day long. Think twice before you buy iffy Chinese from around the corner, because Little Bangkok is guaranteed to be delicious.
Best Burger
The Vortex It’s no secret that Atlanta has become the burger capital over the last few years. Who knew that burgers would become the designer food to have out there? However, when it comes to the best, you have to go with the burger joint that has been around longer then the rest. Vortex is for those who want to hang out, listen to good music, and eat a real messy burger. Classic, simple, and perfect.
Editor’s Choice:
Five Napkins Burger We all watched as Five Napkins Burger did a stunning renovation on the old Nickiemoto’s space, and while some of us laughed at the idea of spending $14 on a burger, it wasn’t until we ate one that we realized it was worth every dollar. Hearty, well prepared, and seasoned to perfection, Five Napkins Burger has created a standout product that should find a quick place in most of Midtown’s hearts. 26 | davidatlanta
We all get drunk, and we all want to eat greasy cheap food after. Somewhere in-between the 4 Jager shots you did earlier in the night paired with the 18 vodka/soda’s you guzzled down, you are ready to stumble into the nearest Waffle House and get yourself a double order of hash browns (smothered, covered, scattered, and topped). We should really be thanking them for putting up with our drunk asses!
Editor’s Choice: R.
Thomas
While its not directly available to those leaving Blakes at 2:30am, the all night eatery offers healthy options all night long to those who don’t want to deal with a McDonalds drive thru. We love having the option to eat a healthy meal after a night of drinking, we just wish it was closer to where our favorite bar was!
Best Dessert
Café Intermezzo Anytime you get asked out to Café Intermezzo, you are in for a treat. The romantic hotspot has sex in the air, and when you are sitting across from a sexy guy or gal, candlelight, cup of Irish coffee with a slice of double mocha cake, you might as well be in your own little heaven.
Best Patio
Joe’s on Juniper This almost goes without saying, Joe’s on Juniper has one of the biggest and best patios in the Southeast and is the place to be seen at during the summer. Nothing better then sitting around with a pitcher
davidatlanta | 27
DINING of long island ice tea (yes, a pitcher) while catching up with 40-50 of your favorite bar buddies. This reminds us, summer is really only around the corner. Better hit the gym!
Best Group Dining
One Midtown Kitchen A key to success in the Atlanta restaurant industry is being able to accommodate large groups of people, and to do it successfully. Anybody who has worked in the service industry knows it is a very hard thing to achieve for many places. One Midtown Kitchen does it great though. The inviting and chic atmosphere is the perfect place to host your birthday, work event, or intimate get together.
Best Beer List
Taco Mac Taco Mac in Atlanta is synonymous with beer (and wings) and is the ultimate place to hang out with a couple of your “bros”. Truth is, most of Midtown doesn’t even know what a football looks like, but that doesn’t mean you can’t stop in, hang out, and throw back a few quality craft beers and enjoy the straight eye candy.
Best Wine List
Editor’s Choice:
Trader Joe’s
Ok, while Trader Joe’s doesn’t quite have a “wine list”, it’s hard to deny that the popular grocery store has one of the best wine selections in the city. Looking for a great wine under $10? Check out some of their wonderful Argentinean and Chilean wines or ask one of the store employees for a recommendation.
Best Service
Burkhart’s How many times have you walked into a bar, been ignored and been handed a watered down drink that you paid too much for? Well, Burkhart’s strives to avoid all of those things. The staff really works to get to know the regulars, which has been a fundamental key to their overall success.
Best Takeout
Doc Chey’s While Doc Chey’s has had its up and downs through the years (particularly in the service area), they have mastered one thing for sure, the art of take out. With dedicated take-out stations at each of their locations, it makes it easy to pick up dinner for the night and be on your way in no time at all.
The Grape
Best Business Lunch/
Wine snobs love to teach inexperienced wine drinkers how to properly drink wine. Luckily, the people at The Grape just want to help you pick the perfect wine based off your palate and make sure you enjoy it. You can chug it for all they care, as long as you enjoy yourself.

DINING it! Einstein’s offers a slightly more sophisticated feel but relaxed enough that you don’t need to be dressed in a suit and tie to conduct business. Oh, did we mention it’s also affordable? That’s always a bonus.
Best First Date
Apres Diem A movie and drink is a great first date, it’s simple, uncomplicated, and an easy way to see if you click with your potential lover. Apres Diem happens to be located next to one of Atlanta’s most charming movie theatres, which makes it the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat and sip on a Manhattan. With its very European feel, the atmosphere is perfect for new lovebirds that want to get to know each other better.
Most Romantic Restaurant
One Midtown Kitchen The sleek bar, the sexy décor, the warm lighting, the exposed brick and industrial, yet polished feel, gives off the sensual and romantic side to dating that we all love. One Midtown Kitchen specializes in creating romance, and you can guarantee that they will be booked solid on Valentines Day.
Best Vegetarian
Radial Café Frank Bragg has just ventured into dinner with Radial Café and the community has already fallen in love with the menu. With many vegetarian (and vegan) menu options, such as the delicious walnut-lentil burger or vegan hash, it’s perfect for those who feel Atlanta’s vegetarian options are limited. 30 | davidatlanta
Most Attractive Wait Staff
Joe’s on Juniper Those sexy boys walking around all day sure does help bring in the crowd. We love to stare, flirt, and even shamelessly ask for their numbers all day long as we sip our cosmos and pound shots. We would love it more if their uniforms were reduced to booty shorts and tank tops.
Best Restaurant (Value)
Eats on Ponce This Atlanta mainstay offers an eclectic variety of healthy fast food options while keeping classic favorites such as jerk chicken, fettucini alfredo, and fresh vegetarian options available daily. Eats is more famously known for its casual atmosphere and large portion sizes that won’t break the bank.
Best Restaurant (Overall)
One Midtown Kitchen What else is there to say that hasn’t been said already? It is one of the most talked about eateries in the Southeast, with rotating menus and seasonal dishes, always cooked with the freshest ingredients. Every time you step into the space it feels like you just took a small break from reality, and if the Concentrics group knows how to do one thing perfectly, they know how to create an experience for their guests… one that they won’t forget.

He will expertly consult you and guide you to some of the trendiest and edgiest hair styles in the fashion world or help you keep it toned down and sexy for the more conservative people. Keep an eye on him in 2012.
Best Gym
LA Fitness
running shorts? LA Fitness will keep you running, lifting and squatting right back into last year’s swimsuit. You might even get a chance to silently treadmill race that annoying guy from the bar last night.
Editor’s Choice: Gravity

Gym Gravity Fitness has done a fantastic job of creating an industrial feel mixed in with a very fresh work out environment. The equipment is top notch, the employees are professional, and it serves as a one-stop shop since they offer select spa services and a salon (Helmet Best Haircut) in the building. Prices are affordable also.
Best Massage
Blue Med Spa There’s a lot in this city to stress someone out and sometimes only a massage can get deep in the tissue of the problem. Blue Med Spa is the spot to get those tense shoulders loosened up. Fighting with your boo? Bring them for a couple’s massage and replace the hot tempers with hot stones.
Best Tattoo Artist/Shop
13 Roses Atlanta is definitely a tattooed city and 13 Roses is responsible for a lot of that body art. Gay owned and located right in the middle of East Atlanta Village, head over for a new piece or to cover up that tribal butterfly on your lower back. The artists at 13 Roses have seen and inked it all.

Best Spray Tan Technician
Dianne Quintero Who has the time to wait for a natural tan to develop in the sun or a tanning bed? Sometimes you have to look sun kissed on an hour’s notice. With that, Atlanta looks to Dianne Quintero of Toucan Tan. It’s like coming home from Miami without the airport frisk.

Brushstrokes
Junkman’s Daughter
You need a clever bumper sticker? Incense? Funny magnet? T-shirt? Coffee mug? Collectible figurine? Drinking glass? Gift card? Window decal? Board game? Magazine? Let’s just say that’s only scratching the surface of Brushstrokes.
Little 5 Points most recognizable storefront is home to some of the wildest and most unique vintage clothes in Atlanta. After finding the perfect 1960s cocktail dress, mosey up the giant high heel to find “Laugh In” ready platform boots.
Best Clothing Store
Best Place to Buy
Boy Next Door
Underwear
An Atlanta tradition, Boy Next Door is the place for the upscale gay gentleman to buy everything from a designer blazer to fancy skivvies. The eye candy on the inside and outside walls makes the shopping experience just a little more special. Did we mention the wonderful sheer changing rooms?
Boy Next Door On a hot date, what could be more important than your outfit? What’s under that outfit. Boy Next Door is here to make sure men look just as stylish in their undies as they do all dolled up. Atlanta salutes you, Boy Next Door, with pants off.
Best Bookstore
Outwrite Truly an Atlanta landmark, nothing has collectively broken the hearts of Southern gays everywhere as the closure of Outwrite. This was the place to sip a handcrafted latte while flipping through pages of half naked guys or to finally gush about your favorite queer or fag hag celebrity. To the Outwrite at Piedmont and 10th, we love you and bid adieu.

SHOPPING Best Adult Store
Inserection In the market for ******? Want to try a ***** alone or with a partner? Need to replace your *****? You’ve been here. You’ve made a purchase. You didn’t regret it. As far as sex shops go, Inserection has multiple locations that are all brightly lit and pretty welcoming. The video booths, however…
Editor’s Choice: Capulets Owners of Brushstokes also own Capulets, an adult store just a few doors down from its flagship. Not only do they have an expert collection of gay porn and items to browse, but they offer a great selection of toys and items that are specifically purchased for gay men.
Best Home Decor
IKEA
Tower Liquor Store Lushes from around the city line up to hit up the supermarket of liquor stores. Don’t feel self-conscious about double, triple, or quadruple fisting bottles of vodka and running into your neighbor. They’re there with a buggy full of whiskey.
Best Pet Store
PetSmart Fido has to eat too. At PetSmart you can feed Fido, clothe Fido, house Fido, play with Fido, have Fido groomed, and adopt Fido’s new best friend Fluffy. Don’t be surprised when you see someone saving a few bucks by buying in bulk. 50 pounds worth of bulk.
Best Gay Retail Business
It doesn’t matter if you’re an 18 year old college student or a 50 year old lawyer, we all own a little piece of Swedish heaven. Where else can you eat a hot dog and ice cream before buying a $99 bed frame? Not much is worth the hassle of Atlantic Station, but IKEA will fill your belly and your apartment on a budget.
Editor’s Choice: Bed
Best Liquor Store
Down
Family owned and operated Bed Down is one of Atlanta’s furniture store treasures. Not only is it an LGBT establishment, but they offer an array of furniture for those who are ready to have quality items in their homes. If they don’t have what you are looking for, they are happy to work with you on finding the right piece from a catalog and will make sure you leave happy.
Brushstrokes Mark Jackson opened Brushstrokes in 1989 and provides the LGBT community with every gift idea they could possibly want. I’m talking Wizard of Oz commemorative figurines. Don’t think Sensory Overload is all Brushstrokes has to offer. Walk a few feet away to Capulets for a different kind of toy.
Best Gay Food Business
Roxx Sometimes you want to drink some beers, eat some fried pickles and a turkey burger and be around the gays. Roxx is your casual neighborhood eatery that offers great value, service and a wonderful staff while serving up some sass and fun times in the process.

COMMUNITY Best Male Activist/ Sexiest Guy in Atlanta
Chandler Bearden Good looks and a big heart- c’mon guys is there really a better combination out there? In 2011, Bearden passed the Mr. Atlanta Eagle title on, but has found new heights in his ongoing work with MISTER. Bearden graced the cover of David Magazine’s Gay Animal Kingdom issue but he’s not just a pretty face. He has a voice that needs to be heard.
Best Female Activist
Melissa Carter You may know her from her time at Q100 or from her bi-weekly columns for GA Voice, but one thing is clear Carter has always been here for the LGBT community. She
currently sits on the Atlanta Police LGBT Advisory Board. But she doesn’t stop there. Having undergone her own kidney transplant nearly a decade ago, Carter also hosts a Transplant Fund.
Best Transgender Activist
Angelica D’Paige Angelica has taken the city by storm the last few years, and has worked to give back to many charities she feels passionate about. She has done work with AID Atlanta, Youth Pride, Project Live Love, CHRIS Kids, and more. Moving forward Angelica has talked about focusing on transgender youth. We can’t wait to see what she does this year!
Editor’s Choice: J.P.
Sheffield
It’s hard to think of Atlanta Pride without J.P. Sheffield who has been the Executive Director of the organization for several years. He has worked with almost every LGBT business owner at some point or another, coordinated with the city on changes to Atlanta Pride, and has fought hard on the behalf every LGBT person in this city, even if they don’t realize it. We wish him the best of luck in his new ventures!
Best Straight Ally
Ben Cohen Too bad he’s our straight ally because this super sexy rugby player is the object of many gay fantasies. He created the “world’s first foundation dedicated to anti-bullying” and with an even bigger leap, especially in the masculine world of sports, is the particular attention his
foundation pays toward bullying in the LGBT community. Cheers Ben Cohen!
Editor’s Choice: Mark

Best Local Nonprofit
AID Atlanta HIV/AIDS is still a major threat in our communities and Tracy Elliot, the caring staff and volunteers of AID Atlanta have been a major force in HIV prevention, testing and treatment for 30 years. AID Atlanta offers HIV testing Monday thru Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Visit www.aidatlanta.org for details on other programs.
Editor’s Choice: M.I.S.T.E.R
Positive Impact
table 3 nights a week now. If you haven’t been by Radial, what are you waiting for?
/
There are so many local Atlanta charities that deserve recognition, it is truly hard to pick one and say it’s the “best”. We want to give props to the M.I.S.T.E.R program though for its advocacy work it has done this past year to bring awareness of HIV/AIDS to the community. They are all settled in to their new location on 11th street, and we look forward to great things from Chandler Bearden and his team this year.
Best Business Person
Frank Bragg Frank Bragg has been around the business block. Having played many key roles in the Metrotainment Restaurant group, Bragg ventured out on his own and combined his passion for business with his passion for a cleaner environment with the purchase of Radial Café in Candler Park. With a great breakfast/brunch and lunch menu already under his belt, Bragg brings dinner to the
It is hard to deny that times have been tough for local LGBT businesses. However Mark & Tom, co-owners and husbands, have found a recipe to success that has kept Brushstrokes serving the community for over two decades. They have become shining examples of how unity and giving back to the community will lead to prosperity, and are role models to many young couples and future entrepreneurs in Atlanta.
Best Politician
John Lewis A civil rights legend in his own time, John Lewis has repeatedly stepped out in support of equal rights for the LGBT community. In November, he was one of 100 congressional representatives that signed onto a legal brief that challenged the constitutionality of DOMA. Rep. Lewis delivered a moving speech during this year’s Pride festival. “We’re one family, it doesn’t matter if we’re gay or straight.” Lewis has our vote!
Editor’s Choice: Alex
Wan
Alex Wan is a household name to those who live in District 6 in Atlanta, and he has diligently fought and protected the LGBT community against adversity the last several years. He is the first openly gay Atlanta City Council member, and also the first Asian American elected to the council. He has a bright future ahead of him and we look forward to helping him get there! davidatlanta | 47

COMMUNITY Best LGBT Sports Team
Atlanta Bucks David readers’ sure love their rugby. The Atlanta Bucks are not only a rough and tumble crew, their contributions to the LGBT community are top notch. Their Purple Dress Run and Miss Ruck and Maul 2011 All Star Academy are just a few events they sponsor throughout the community. Practices have begun for their new season. If you haven’t caught these guys in action make it a point to cheer them on in 2012.
Best Gay Musician
Barry Brandon YouTube videos, one man shows, activist and controversial Bedlam party organizer. Is there anything that Barry Brandon can’t do? We all know who he is, and when he isn’t jet setting the country Barry Brandon blends his own humor and wit with cabaret style songs including the Taylor the Latte Boy and covers of such pop stars as Robyn.
Best Gay Artist
Topher Payne Author, playwright and actor; it seems like the only thing Topher Payne can’t do is consistently bring his domestically disturbed brand of comedy to Twitter. C’mon Topher, we know those 140-character jokes come all day long- SHARE! Topher can be seen through the weekend in Frost/Nixon playing at the Springer Opera House in Columbus, GA. It’s not that far y’all- especially to catch Topher.
Best Local Athlete
Matt Ryan Quarterback Matt Ryan may not have led the Falcons through a winning playoff game (3 years in a row) but that doesn’t justify calls for a change-up. If you look at the stats posted by Manning, Brees and Brady their first four seasons on the field, then Matt Ryan could possibly make the leap from average to great in another season or two. Hold on tight Falcons fans, we may have a diamond in the rough here.
Best Benefit Party
Toy Party No, not that kind of toy party. Every year the community comes together for cocktails and Christmas because every child deserves Christmas. This year For the Kid in All of Us collected nearly 5,000 toys and over $9,000 in gift cards. We’re already looking forward to the 10th anniversary of this amazing community benefit party.
Best Community Event
Atlanta Pride Sure the last couple of years have seen major adjustments with the Atlanta Pride festival but we’ve finally found our stride being back in the park with cooler weather and being coupled with National Coming Out Day. Last week, Executive Director J.P. Sheffield, stepped down to take a post at the Health Initiative, but the Pride board and volunteers are amazing individuals committed to bringing the best event to Atlanta and will bring it in 2012! davidatlanta | 49
COMMUNITY Best Neighborhood
Best Local Celebrity
Midtown
Elton John
Despite all the negative publicity lately: robberies, businesses closing down, fights in the bars and inaccurate police misconduct accusations, Midtown is still the neighborhood to be in. Midtown has the greatest concentration of gay bars and businesses and is definitely still the weekend hotspot. Here’s hoping for a more unified community and neighborhood in 2012!
Really? We were hoping NeNe Leakes won this category because she’s a rich b**ch. Just kidding (about both parts). Tiny Dancer has an Atlanta home and Aida actually had its world premiere at the Alliance Theater. John is currently in a Vegas residency and was featured on Kate Bush’s recent album.
Best Up & Coming Neighborhood
East Atlanta With Mary’s and My Sister’s Room, East Atlanta has always been a go-to destination. With the addition of Cockpit and a bustling business district more and more readers are calling East Atlanta their home.
Editor’s Choice:
Virginia Highland It was almost impossible to not mention Virginia Highland because they lost by 1 vote. Yes, only 1 vote! Actually, West Midtown was 3 votes behind the winner also. Needless to say, the “Yippie” (cross between Hippie and Yuppie) neighborhood is a great blend of gay couples, young families, and fun restaurants and bars. You can grab a coffee, walk around and window shop, and then hop into the nearest bar for a beer. It caters to all communities and really has become a mecca for gays wanting an escape from Midtown for the night.
Sexiest Girl & Trans Person
Angelica D’Paige Hey Foxy Lady! Yes, the daring diva won both of these categories, and it totally makes sense. She’s got the sexy curves, a voluptuous body, and a killer ass … and can work out a pair of 6” heels like nobody else in this city. What makes her really shine though? Her outgoing personality – we feel the love anytime we are around her!
Best Stripper
Blondie, Clermont Lounge Real or fake, big or small (okay mostly big), we all have a fascination with breasts. Our reader’s took this to new heights with this year’s Best Stripper winner. Those swinging dicks couldn’t hold a candle to the Atlanta legend Blondie. If you’ve never seen her smash beer cans with her breasts you’re missing out. Get yo’ ass down to the Clermont Lounge NOW!!
davidatlanta | 51
PLACES Best Live Music Venue
The Tabernacle Nestled in downtown, the Tabernacle saw the likes of Mary J Blige, The Script, Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg in 2011. The Tabernacle has a rich history including its origins as a church in 1910. Live Nation currently owns the venue and is gearing up for a great lineup of artists in 2012 including Snow Patrol, NeedtoBreathe and Childish Gambino.
Editor’s Choice:
Smith’s Olde Bar With many intimate settings for shows and a wild variety to boot, Smith’s Olde Bar is our 2011 pick for Best Live Music Venue. I’ve seen everyone from Idol-alums to Holly Williams, granddaughter of the legendary Hank Williams Sr. Often featuring local bands, this is the go-to place to get the pulse of the local music scene.
Best Movie Theatre
Regal Atlantic Station With 16 screens including 3-D and IMAX, Regal Theaters at Atlantic Station are the go-to spot to catch a movie on opening night or even a weekend matinee. With its free Regal Crown Club rewards program, it keeps movie patrons coming back. 52 | davidatlanta
Editor’s Choice: UA
Tara / Landmark Theaters (tie) Sometimes bigger isn’t always better and time after time these two theaters offer the best of indie films. Plus Landmark Theaters support Out on Film which is poised to celebrate its 25th anniversary this year.
Best Hotel
W Midtown Often the host of some of the hottest parties in town, W Midtown has the perfect location. Blocks from the park and centered between all of the bars and clubs in Midtown this is definitely the room you want to book when coming to Atlanta. Don’t forget the Pride 2012 rates when having your out-oftown company visit in October.
Best Playhouse / Theatre
Fox Theatre With more than 4,000 seats, the Fox Theater hosts a variety of events including touring Broadway Shows (Mama Mia, Wicked), Tyler Perry productions and big concerts. The 2011-2012 season continues with Memphis, 2010 Tony Award Winner for Best Musical, Billy Elliot, The Musical in March and Les Miserable in April.
Editor’s Choice:
Alliance Theater The Alliance Theater has debuted such shows as Bring it On: The Musical and brought such stars as Jasmine Guy, currently starring in God of Carnage (extended through Feburary 4th) to its stage. Look for the Ghosts Brothers of Darkland County, the long awaited musical from author Stephen King and musical icon John Mellencamp to make its world debut in Atlanta at The Alliance Theater in April.
Best Place to PRAY
Saint Marks Saint Mark’s is more than just a church, it’s a true community. In early 2011, “Saint Mark Church Conference voted overwhelmingly to affiliate with Reconciling Ministries Network,” a network of United Methodist who seek to unite churchgoers despite sexual or gender identity in order to transform the “world into the full expression of Christ’s inclusive love.” Saint Mark’s hosts many LGBT community events including this year’s 11th Annual Rustin/Lorde breakfast.
Best Way to Break Up
Face-to-Face
Best Place to Laugh
The nominations for this category were hilarious as many people thought that changing your Facebook status was the best way to break up. Thank goodness we really haven’t become that disconnected and a good ‘ole fashioned face-to-face break up is still the thing to do . . . even if you get a drink thrown in your face.
Laughing Skull Lounge
Best GrocerY STORE
In the back of the always delicious Midtown Vortex, Laughing Skull Lounge is the go-to place for laughs, gay or straight. Margaret Cho has been known to pop in and test new material and gay faves Jennifer Coolidge and Hal Sparks are among those who have performed. Todd Glass, who recently came out of the closet, brings his comedy to Laughing Skull in April.
Kroger Gay Kroger, Murder Kroger, Crack Kroger- so many different Kroger nicknames it’s hard to keep up but David Readers still prefer to get their groceries with their Kroger Plus card. The Ansley Mall Kroger is always teeming with beautiful guys picking up produce or strolling through the delicious wine section. davidatlanta | 53

YEAR in REVIEW Best Celebrity Coming Out
Ricky Martin We could make He Bangs jokes or quip about how we always knew Martin was Livin’ La Vida Loca, but instead we’d like to congratulate Ricky Martin for taking the steps to come out of the closet and for raising twins, Matteo and Valentino, showing the rest of the world that yes, gays can be parents . . . even if they are one of the fortunate ones.
Hottest Male Celebrity
Ryan Reynolds He has broken Alanis Morissette’s heart (Reynold must’ve never heard Jagged Little Pill), married and divorced Scarlett Johansson and both of his 2011 films, The Green Lantern and Atlanta-filmed The Change-Up, tanked at the box-office. None of this mattered to our readers who can’t get enough of Reynolds and his mouthwatering abs.
Hottest Female Celebrity
Jennifer Aniston Jennifer Aniston has always been a trendsetter. During her decade-long run on NBC’s Friends, she inspired many to ask for the Rachel when talking to their hairdressers. We sided with Aniston when Brad left her for Angelina because even a breakup looked good on Aniston. This year Aniston took a comedic turn as the sex obsessed boss of Jason Bateman in Horrible Bosses making her the obvious choice as Hottest Female Celebrity. 64 | davidatlanta
Editor’s Choice: Beyoncé Beyoncé is one of the most talented performers of our time, and with her vivacious body, long legs, and perfect complexion its hard for us not to find her extremely attractive. Even during her pregnancy she radiated and still kept that soft sultry feel about her that we have come to love.
Best Song
“Born This Way” – Lady GaGa Mother Monster’s first single from her second full-length album may have sounded a bit too much like Madonna’s Express Yourself but the LGBT community didn’t care. Its bumping beat and anthemic message has kept it playing in bars and clubs all yearlong. I’m on the right track baby, I was Born This Way!!
Best Album
Adele – 21 There was no doubt this album would be our reader’s pick. Adele’s 21 was the bestselling album in the U.S. and worldwide in 2011. Adele proved that it didn’t matter what genre of music you sang, true emotions would resonate in any format. Both Rolling in the Deep and Someone Like You became hits across multiple formats proving that it doesn’t matter what genre of music you sing, true emotions will resonate. Congrats to her on her third #1 single in a row, Set Fire to the Rain, and selling over 17 million copies
of her album world wide with sales not even showing signs of slowing down.
Best Movie
The Help With Golden Globes already under its belt and Oscar nominations to boot, The Help was a hit with our readers. The wonderful performances delivered by Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and even Jessica Chastain tugged at our readers’ heartstrings, made them cry and made them vote.
Editor’s Choice: The
Muppets
Maybe it’s the kid in me, or my crush on Miss Piggie, but The Muppets won me over this year. This movie could’ve gone so wrong but with Jason Segel and the always adorable Amy Adams it was oh, so right.
Best TV Show
Modern Family Maybe it’s the fact that a TV show finally shows a gay couple with a child but we’re betting on the fact that Modern Family showcases exactly how dysfunctional a family can be and still love each other that resonated with our readers.
Editor’s Choice: Revenge ABC brought out a great line-up of shows this year, and it’s hard to choose just one that is the “best”. However, Revenge brought many of us a fantastic female driven nighttime soap opera just when we needed it the most. We can’t wait to see what happens each week, and Madeline Stowe’s performance is phenomenal as the villain you don’t know if you should love or hate.
Best Celebrity Breakup
Demi & Ashton There really shouldn’t be a best breakup category because when love goes south, it’s bad business for all parties involved. Isn’t
that right, Kim? Sure, some people can work through the May-December thing but it looks like it was ultimately Demi who was Punk’d when Ashton couldn’t keep it in his pants. Demi you should’ve stuck with Patrick Swayze; a ghost will never cheat on you.
Editor’s Choice: Kim
& Kris
It took the world by storm when Kim Kardashian and Kris Humprhies ended their marriage after a mere 72 days and threw a wedding that allegedly cost $10 million. What was called the wedding of our “American Royalty” turned out to be a reality stunt and overall bust that pocketed Kim millions. She really is the best scam artist of our time, however, we still can’t help but watch what she does next.
Best Celebrity Trainwreck
Lindsay Lohan WTF?! Our own pop culture pundit Lucas Witherspoon had enough fodder all year long with every twist and turn Lohan made. Court, probation, Playboy – it never seemed to stop. Now there’s talk about Lohan playing Elizabeth Taylor in a Lifetime movie??? We always knew that’s where you’d end up.
Best Gay App
Grindr So is that what everyone’s doing on their phones sitting around the bars these days? And we thought they were just texting their friends to see where they were.

ARIES (March 20 – April 19): Weird insights can make you wonder how much you really do know yourself. Pushing yourself harder can make things tough on those around you. Ask yourself why you do that and whether it’s really necessary.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): Who are your friends really? The answers will be surprising, both good and bad. Focus on the good. As much as some people may deserve your wrath, be careful not to say anything you’ll regret later.
GEMINI (May 21- June 20): There is such a thing as being too nice and there is a middle ground between needless controversies and sweeping important issues under the rug. Blowhard, diplomat or sycophant? The role you choose will brand you for a long time. CANCER (June 21- July 22): What friends say about your sex life is none of their business, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. Being sensitive, open and patient with others will help you to improve your reputation, very likely in ways you don’t expect. LEO (July 23 – August 22): Work on your relationship karma. That’s mostly just practicing the golden rule. Find new, creative ways to do that. Being nice to your friends is too easy. Reach out to new people. If you have someone special do something special. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): The ever-confusing element to personal relationships is about to get more deep and complex. Your efforts at charm and rationalization to clear the air are beside the point. Welcome the magic and mystery. It can do you a lot of good. LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): Wanting to be healthier and prettier is OK, but when self-improvement becomes competition with others look at what inner demons are feeding that jealousy. Don’t be the evil queen asking, “Mirror, mirror…” Meditation and self-examination bring out your deep, inner beauty. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21): Arguments at home are really about stresses outside: tensions with friends or worries over the future. Home should be where you can discuss your agitation and get better insights. Stay calm and focused and it could be.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): Getting too big for your britches undermines the respect people have for you. Humility, charity and a bit of self-deprecating humor will help. A critical review of recent career moves can suggest new directions, but don’t change tack quite yet! CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): Worries about your career are not entirely unfounded, but they are likely exaggerated. Watch out for new opportunities. They will cost you, but may be worth the price. Look ahead and think carefully! AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): Flirtatious impulses can prove a bit too extravagant. Remember, one perfect rose is more elegant than a dozen. Don’t dwell on the years that have passed, but think about where you want to be in the future and how to get there. PISCES (February 19 – March 19): With your co-ruler Neptune coming home to stay the next 14 years, you will feel more in tune with the times, a mixed blessing these days. Learn to focus and shield your sensitivity. To care for others effectively, care for yourself first.

Bitch! Session
It may be 12 steps to sobriety, but it’s only 2 steps to the bar!
I’m sorry I have to interrupt you but otherwise it wouldn’t be a conversation. Breathe!
Obama should speak a lot slower so the viewers of FOX can understand him better. #SOTU
Why are you blow-drying your pubic hair at the gym? And why do you have that much hair down there that it needs blow-drying to begin with?
Mayor Reed has a GF?! Tax season is like a roller coaster ride. You either get off the ride feeling awesome, or you get it off it wanting to throw up everywhere.
Anybody who self refers to himself as a “Local Celebrity” has major mental issues. Buying a house is a bitch process – you would think that if you are a qualified individual the banks would want them to buy the massive foreclosures on the market?!
Senators should wear uniforms like NASCAR drivers. That way we can easily identify their corporate sponsors.
It’s crazy that when I think about “10 years ago” I think of the early 90’s… not 2002. Some people don’t realize what goes into certain jobs, and they need to not pretend like they do.
Saying you don’t like Asian food is like saying you don’t like “European” food! Until you’ve tried all 8 million styles & dishes from thousands of cultures, just admit it and say, I don’t like to try new things.

bitch@davidatlanta.com After years of having a certain regular, I finally taught him how to properly tip me. Would it be rude to invoice him for back tips?
If you hate your body then get in the gym and work out. There isn’t a quick fix, and all the time you waste trying to find one could be spent working out your body. Think about it and stop being lazy.
Did we move to Portland or something? I haven’t seen the sun in about 10 days. I broke a lightbulb in my complex so I could go flirt with the fine ass guy in my leasing office.
Reply to the white guy that does not like black guys sexually: It’s ok, sometimes you don’t have to say “I don’t like black guys in a sexual way”. Just chill and choose your words wisely! That’s all - something’s are better off NOT said.
Why is that loser calling, apologizing now? My guess, they finally got to their 4th step. Is going to school even worth the debt anymore? Shameless self promoters on Facebook should all be moved to an Island far far away. Americans are so stupid! Apparently we’re incapable of watching foreign movies – that were better the FIRST time? Like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
