Armorettes Drag Races Part 1
A
s a kid, whenever I’d go to the Circus, I always wondered what it was like backstage. Um… well, today I got my wish…sort of. I’m backstage at Burkharts with the cast of Atlanta’s favorite trailer park clowns known as The Armorettes, the charming mutli million dollar charity raising group. They just finished their weekly 7pm Sunday show and the room is covered with boas, glitter, all kinds of rated R props, food wrappings…and right in the middle of all this hoopla is a vacant seat next to an innocent frighten queen (Alicia Kelly) looking in the mirror cautiously applying her make up while beckoning me to sit next to her. I’m not afraid at all, in fact, I find the Armorettes to be hilarious backstage as they go AT IT with each other and had me laughing the whole time. I thought to myself, hmmm, since their famous EASTER DRAG RACES are coming up, now is a good time to interview them (well just 2 of them for now, I only have one page). So I’ll make this Part 1. I’m going to cut into Trashetta Galore and Vivian Valium’s conversation that’s in progress… Vivian: (to Trashetta) Oooh Girl, I’m so glad you brought your guests honey. Trashetta: Well, I’m glad too then.
Vivian: Because their OLD, I like them OLD queens honey, they love some Vivian Valium. Honey they so old, they had to drop the money instead of coming down to hand it to me-
Trashetta: No honey, it’s cause they know YOU’re too old to go up there to get it! Vivian: Shut up you Trash!
Brent: LOL!!! Ladies, I just have a few questions, starting with when did you two become Armorettes?
Vivian: I became one in 1992, right before Bubba D Licious (I interviewed her 2 columns ago), at a time when they just ‘selected’ the girls, I was young and innocent back then (and the room went silent…crickets). Trashetta: I became one in 2007 but I had to audition, but didn’t think they were going to choose me because I had just taken 2 Jager shots to calm my nerves that Lucy Bowles gave me but b/c my drinking tolerance is so low, I was torn up from the floor up. Apparently they loved it, but all I remember is feeling very loose and free. Brent: What are you known for and what’s your signature song?
Vivian: During the hey day in the 90’s, I was the “pretty one” (more crickets) Yep, I sure was, don’t be jealous (she really was yall). And I was also known for using a grand piano for my numbers. But this was when we were back at the Armory;s “Thelma’s Pump Room”. People still ask me to this day, when will I do those kinds of numbers again. Hell, whenever we get that kind of stage again! But my signature song today would probably be my Bette Midler mix with the ‘The Bugle Boy’ song.

Trashetta: I guess you can say I’m known for how emotionally serious I get into my routines. My signature number is Jennifer Holidays, “I’m telling you”. Because I’ve dated a lot of bad men and I just think about them all and I channel them (laughs) that’s all they were good for, helping me get into my drag! Ppl seem to like my Lady Gaga mix too where I’m wearing lots of lights and latex.
Brent: The famous Easter Drag Races will be back in Burkkhart’s parking lot this year, so what’s your favorite Easter Drag Races moment?
Vivian: Honey, it’s so many! But the one I remember CLEARLY is when Jaye Lish, as a boy and right before he became an Armorette, played one of our famous drag races games, the musical chairs. We all thought he was a hottie (as a BOY) and wanted him to win which meant he HAD to perform with us that night. So we went a little ‘goo goo’ for him backstage and let me just say, he’s an Armorette now! Trashetta: It was one year where this contestant who thought he was all that but doing really good until his high heel shoe had popped off, flipped over and busted his ass (she laughs…a lot! I love Trashetta!). Brent: So what’s the Armorettes’ schedule and what are the future plans?
Trashetta: Burkharts every Sunday and The Heretic every 3rd Saturday of each month.
Vivian: Aside from tickling your fancy, we have a purpose (to raise money for HIV/AIDS research). So we’re trying to reach out to the younger generation by becoming even more involved in the community. This is where we stopped so they could finish packing up. I just want to say to the readers, this was the FUNNIEST interview I had in awhile! I could not stop laughing. I love them! Next week, two more Armorettes! Heating Things Up for An Even Hotter Summer
C
hris Coleman is one of the busiest men in town. With over 150 events in the works this year, this event promoter and owner of Chris Coleman Enterprises recently found out he will be receiving an award from GLAAD. His hard work is definitely paying off and bringing a lot of excitement to gay nightlife in Atlanta. Three weekly events that you won’t want to miss this summer are the return of Sociale Tuesdays, Indulge Thursdays, and the newest Saturday party in town, “Drench.”
Sociale Tuesday This year Coleman updates past years’ Tuesday events and brings you “Sociale Tuesday” at Piola, 1010 Peachtree (next to RA Sushi at the corner of Peachtree and 11th Street). Beginning weekly March 15 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., this Italian Bistro is the place to be for networking, live music, drink specials and complimentary appetizers.
“This will be a casual event about food and just relaxing while meeting new people,” said Coleman. “We want people to come in during this time whenever they want. There will be no program or guest speakers. If they want to eat or just have cocktails and hang out, that’s fine. It’s a little different than anything else out there, but maybe a little similar to the Big Gay Supper Club.” Coleman said the event will start at Piola, and about every four weeks it will rotate to some place new, then return to home base. The other places will be announced at a later date.
Indulge Also returning is Indulge, a weekly party from 9:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. at the W Midtown.
“It’s a party, but it’s not a dance party,” said Coleman. “It’s more of a cocktail event and kind of starts the weekend off a little early. The outdoor space is really the main attraction. It’s a great place to come hang out, get a drink, and sit outside.” There have been lots of guest celebrities at Indulge in the past. Anyone from Adam Lambert to Paula Abdul to Debbie Allen and Jasmine Guy has stopped by.
“We also have had Kristine W, Kelly Rowland, and Frenchie Davis,” said Coleman. “It’s usually people who had events in town, but sometimes I organize and plan events around them.”
Drench Last summer was scorching hot at times, and everyone was looking for a pool to keep cool. Have you ever played in the sun 160 feet off the ground? This summer Coleman and the W Downtown have teamed up to present “Drench,” a Saturday daytime event like no other. 20 davidatlanta
By Jesse A. Hancock CCE will host a soft opening May 21 and officially kick off Drench May 28 (Memorial Day Weekend). It will take place 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. every Saturday (weather permitting) through September. There will be a live DJ, no cover charge and free parking if you spend at least $20.
“There is a lounge attached to the pool called ‘Wet Bar,’ which will be open,” said Coleman. “There will be food, drinks, fashion shows, and special guest appearances. The space is big. The lounge will probably hold 300 people. It will be a place to be seen or show off your body or bathing suit or whatever you want to show off.”
NV “I also have ten dance events starting in April that go through September,” said Coleman. Seven of those events are called ‘NV,’ Atlanta’s first all-night Saturday events.”
Similar to the days of Backstreet, NV will start at 10:00 p.m. and will go all the way until 7:00 a.m. It will take place at 714 Spring Street, a large warehouse space that has been built out into an event space with a special VIP room and plenty of parking in the area. Coleman says it has a very urban feel to it, not “glitzy glamor like Opera,” but more of an “urban warehouse vibe.” There are at least four lots that charge $5 each in the immediate area. “My idea for NV is not to have an opening DJ and then a main draw DJ,” said Coleman. “Instead, I want to have two big DJs. For example, I might have DJ Mike Cruz from 10:00 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. and then DJ Manny Lehman from 2:30 a.m. until 7:00 a.m. So it’s always going to be a draw DJ at the beginning and an after hours DJ second. They will both spin for four and a half hours.” Liquor sales will stop at 3:00 a.m. due to state laws, but the dancing will continue until 7:00 a.m.
Club Q There’s also “Club Q,” another all-nighter event series that will take place on Sundays during three long weekends: Memorial Day Sunday, July 4th Sunday, and Labor Day Sunday. The DJ for Memorial Day Sunday is DeLeon, the DJ for July 4 Sunday is Manny Lehman, and the DJ for Labor Day Sunday is Alexander from L.A. Crossing Musical Bounds with Freemasons

tlanta will soon get injected with a dose of live, high-energy English dance music royalty.
Russell Small and James Wiltshire are two DJs and producers from England who love making dance music. Their fans know them as Freemasons, and their videos are all over the Web. Since 2005 they’ve worked on chart toppers with such artists as Shakira, Kylie Minogue, and Beyonce.
On April 22 they will be giving a special performance at Heretic to benefit Joining Hearts, and tickets are selling fast. They first started getting attention with the muchloved Jackie Moore sampling, “Love On My Mind,” featuring Amanda Wilson, which became a dance

anthem of 2005. They quickly established themselves as the UK’s best remixers. In 2007 they scored their most successful single with a cover of the Alanis Morissette song, “Uninvited.” In 2009 they worked with Sophie Ellis-Bextor on “Heartbreak Make Me Dancer,” which became their sixth consecutive hit and made them one of the most successful ever dance acts in the UK. In June they will be performing at Gay Days in Orlando. Interview with Russell Small
David Magazine: Have you played in Atlanta before, and what can we expect at your show at Heretic? Russell: I’ve never been to Atlanta. We’ve only been coming to America the past few years. We’re basically getting to sort of go and see a little bit and play at different places. I’m looking forward to coming to Atlanta. I’ll actually have a day off there. If someone can recommend any places to go in Atlanta on a Saturday night, I’d greatly appreciate it. David Magazine: What can we expect at your show at Heretic?
Russell: Hopefully, the crowd will be into the Freemasons’ sound. It’s generally 90 % Freemasons, unless I read the crowd a little different and they want something else. What you see is what you get. David Magazine: You’re also playing at Gay Days in Orlando this summer. That’s a much bigger crowd. What can fans expect at that show?
Russell: We don’t really look at it that way. It’s a gig, whether it’s for 50 people or 5,000 – 10,000 people. I get nervous no matter what the size the crowd is. That’s a good thing, though. It takes me 20 minutes to settle in sometimes during a show.
David Magazine: How long have you been touring, and where else are you headed?
I think there’s a little bit of gay in James and myself. Absolutely, I think so. We love divas, and we love big vocals. The gay crowds love it, which is great!
Russell: We’re touring all the time. It’s part of the job. I enjoy it. I love the travelling part a lot. It’s a constant worldwide tour. It’s always exciting to go to different places and meet different people. Most of the time we’re back home in England and do a lot of studio time in between travelling and gigs. It’s mostly me touring at the moment. We’re trying to work on production and writing for a new album. Either one of us can represent Freemasons when we travel. David Magazine: It has been about six years since your work with Phats and Small. Is that part of your career over?
Russell: That is pretty much done, but never say never. Who knows? At the moment we’re working on something new called The Pegasus Project. David Magazine: When you remix a popular song, like Beyonce’s “Green Light,” do you get input from the artist? Russell: Not really, basically the vocals get sent over and we use them. The artists may or may not say they like the remix. We usually get more through the record company or management, not so much from the artists. We don’t typically work with the artists in person. The vocalists are generally in another country. David Magazine: You remix songs from lots of genres including pop, dance, R&B and even country. How do you choose the songs?
Russell: It’s just personal taste, really. We get asked a lot and turn down a lot. We may listen to a track a thousand times over before deciding. We don’t like pigeon holing ourselves. For us, it stops everything from becoming boring and mundane. We try to incorporate different styles together in our mixes. We get influences from all types of music, which keeps our sound fresh, I think. We consider a combination of lyrics and beat. David Magazine: Are you trying to work more with American artists now?
Russell: Not really. It just sort of depends on what we like, whether it’s English or American or whatever. We’re working now with a few up and coming artists in the UK. There is a girl called ‘Yasmin.’ I’ve done a remix for her. For us, it’s about the vocals and the songs. It doesn’t really matter where they come from. It’s great to be asked. Half the time we don’t really take it in. When we’re doing stuff with Beyonce, we don’t really take it in that it’s Beyonce. We don’t get too carried away with the artists. David Magazine: What have been some of your favorite or most memorable songs?
Russell: I love all of them. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have done them. ‘Mesmerized’ (2005) with Faith Evans is probably one of my favorites. I just love it. Also, one of our earlier songs with Heather Headley
called ‘In My Mind’ (2006). I’m not sure what Heather has done since, but she has an amazing voice and is an amazing writer as well. David Magazine: How did you get into this type of work? Is this your day job?
Russell: Yes, this is my day job. I just sort of fell into it, really. I have been DJ-ing for a long, long time. I just went into the studio and have carried on ever since. It has been fantastic. I’m overwhelmed that it has lasted this long and hope we can keep it going even longer. David Magazine: Your music really appeals to gay audiences. Do you consider that when writing or choosing your songs? Russell: Oh, not at all, but I think there’s a little bit of gay in James and myself. Absolutely, I think so. We love divas, and we love big vocals. The gay crowds love it, which is great. There’s no snobbery, just people who love music. A lot of venues where we play have mixed crowds. They can be a bit snobby at times, so we end up trying to suit the crowd. When we play our gay crowds, however, we can predominantly play Freemasons’ records. David Magazine: You chose the name ‘Freemasons’ from a pub you visit in Brighton, correct? Why do you or have you gone by other names such as The Alibi and Funk Fanatics?
Russell: Yes, the pub is at the top of the road where I live. It’s hard to come up with names that are catchy and that stick. We have taken names from films and famous people and music. For a while we were called ‘Walken,’ named after Christopher Walken. •

Eagle DJ Makes Top 3 in National Radio Contest

W
hen you first meet DJ Pat Scott, whose real name is Pat Weikle, you may be a little surprised to learn he has entertained dance crowds as a DJ for over seventeen years. Modest, a self-described computer geek, and humble, Pat is genuine and talented, with a good mix of Southern charm. Pat has played at many clubs across the United States, as well as international venues.
“I really love how the dance genre brings people from all cultures together,” said Pat, the resident DJ at The Atlanta Eagle and a regular guest DJ at MIXX Atlanta. As a DJ/producer, Pat said he sees opportunity to learn from everyone. He truly understands the responsibility he has to entertain the crowd.
“It’s exciting to me how with a simple beat or counter melody a DJ or producer can alter the entire feeling of a track,” said Pat. “It’s best exemplified by bands like the Pet Shop Boys who, by the way, are my biggest inspiration. The best compliment I can receive is when a shirtless, sweat-soaked, soul comes to the booth to tell me at the end of the night he hasn’t danced like that in years. I want my crowd to have fun; that’s job number one.”
For the past few months, Pat has been competing nationally in a contest on Gay Internet Radio Live (G.I.R.L). Fans have been voting week after week in an American-Idol-like weekly elimination. Pat made it to the top three, although the contest ended April 4 and Stephen Massey, aka DJ Grind, was crowned the winner. David: Congratulations on making it to the top three with the Gay Internet Radio Live contest! How did the contest work? 28 davidatlanta
Pat: The purpose of the contest is to find the top up-and-coming DJ in the U.S. There were over 300 entrants this year, which were narrowed down to 24. The first round consisted of two blocks of twelve contestants, and they eliminated seven contestants in each block. The organizers kept it moving along sort of like on American Idol. The first few rounds were decided by judges only, no voting, but we were then able to get community support. The final rounds were decided strictly by fan voting. I’ve been nervous as sin, but I’m really excited and floored that I made it this far. This is the third year of the contest. David: How did you enter the contest? Were you nominated?
Pat: I don’t remember exactly who it was, but someone sent me a suggestion to enter. So I spent about two hours putting together a mix and sent it in, thinking nothing more of it would happen. I got a call two days later saying they really liked it and wanted me in the contest. David: What recognition or prize does the winner receive?
Pat: The winner gets to play one of the Bud Light pool parties at Gay Days this summer in Orlando, which can have upwards of 10,000 people. It’s huge! On top of that, the winner receives a weekly radio show on G.I.R.L. It’s a pretty big deal and great exposure. It’s awesome not only for me personally, but also for Atlanta. We had two contestants from Atlanta who made it. The other contestant from Atlanta is DJ Moose, who is an independent DJ. David: What would winning this contest have meant to you? Are you disappointed? Pat: As a DJ I’ve sort of stayed in the underground
scene for about 17 years. Again, I’m honored to have made it this far. It is a huge validation, first of all, that I might be good at what I do. It is also a huge plug for Atlanta and what we have going on here. I have a day job as a senior architect for a major software manufacturer that expands outside DJ-ing every weekend. One of the reasons I like to work with The Eagle and other established bars is we have great night life here, but I’d like to see it revitalized like it used to be. I like to DJ, and it’s good for the city. We did have the largest gay population in the U.S. for a while. There are people from at least six neighboring states who drive here monthly or more often to have a good time. They don’t have anywhere else to go. I think we need to represent that a little better. It would be nice to get the city involved, but more important is to get our community organized first. It would be a huge step up for me in my career, but at the end of the day I’d just love to raise awareness of some of the cool stuff that happens in Atlanta. David: How long have you lived in Atlanta?
Pat: I’ve lived here sixteen years. I am from West Virginia originally but also lived in Baltimore during college and for a while. David: How long have you been spinning at The Eagle? Pat: Five years
David: What do you like to do in your spare time?
Pat: I do a lot of charity work as a DJ. I’ve worked with the Atlanta Bucks and Atlanta softball leagues, typically for charities like CHRIS Kids and P.A.L.S. I’ve DJ’d a lot of their fundraiser events, like a P.A.L.S. fashion show this past Christmas. The community has supported me, and I think it’s important to give back. I also work with a few Golden Retriever rescue squads. I have three Golden Retrievers, who take up a lot of my time. David: What is the key to success as a DJ in general?
Pat: A lot of it has to go with going with what you like. At the end of the day, if you don’t like what you are playing, it will come through.
David: What is the key to success as a DJ in Atlanta?
Pat: To not be too far ahead of the crowd. I think there is a lot of great new music, and as DJs we’re always anxious to get it played, but sometimes the crowd is just not ready for it. It has to be a healthy mix of old and new music. Anyone who has heard me knows I like to go way, way back and really, really forward. It isn’t necessarily making a name for yourself. It’s a healthy partnership between the DJ and the dance floor crowd. You have to make them happy. David: There is a healthy competition of DJs around town. Do you think that is the direction clubs are going, to have the best known or hottest DJs?

I think we need to represent that a little better. forever. Consistency is the key. We do have a lot of DJs here, some who have been around a while and some who are starting out. That’s great. Technology itself has made it easier to be a DJ. I came up toward the end of vinyl and the start of CDs. Now if you don’t use a laptop it’s like you aren’t a real DJ, but it’s more than just pressing a button on your iPod. Pat: I’m ramping up on a few opportunities for Atlanta PRIDE that will hopefully have some corporate sponsorship. I’m also working with Mixx to start a monthly dance party every fourth Saturday. I’m also going to India for my day job. Interestingly, I may also have a DJ gig there. I’d love to get my picture DJ-ing in front of the Taj Mahal. I’m also working on some events with the Bear Run community. I have a full calendar; that’s for certain.

We had a team meeting a while back to invite others to join us, and we brought in some connections to help us network. I met a representative from Whynatte one night, and we told her about Bedlam. I turned it over to Barry. That started our first sponsorship. We’ve had Whippet shots, which are delicious. I’m excited about our sponsorships. David Magazine: How has Bedlam changed in the past year?
J.L.: It has grown. Originally it was supposed to be an invite-only anything-goes type of fetish party. That’s how it was in New York. They’d pick a spot and it was advertised by word of mouth, or you’d have to know someone to get in. It just got too big too quickly for that. We advertised the first one with a theme, and from then on everyone stuck with a new theme for each party. They ask, ‘What do I wear for this one?’ or ‘What do I do now?’ Bedlam seemed to just go that route with a theme each time. We just went with it. David Magazine: What kind of crowd do you try to attract to come to Bedlam?
J.L.: Everyone. I go to some bars around town and sometimes feel a little out of place. There are a lot of pretentious people out there, depending on where you go. Everyone has their own cliques. The really cool thing about the party we throw is it’s all-inclusive. That’s another reason why we like to change venues sometimes. We don’t want to be stuck to just a straight bar, or a lesbian bar, or an all-guy gay bar. We want everyone to feel like they are welcomed. We don’t want just the gay boys or just the lesbians to come out. We have a really good variety of people who come to these parties. I think that’s what makes it special. Obviously, we have to stick to the 21-and-up law, but generally all ages are welcome. Just like in New York. I saw someone as old as my grandmother one time standing on a box in a bra and underwear, up there shakin’ her thing, haha. We want to see that! We want everyone to be there. David Magazine: Who comes up with the themes? What have been some memorable past themes?

We try to be a little bit edgy, and we want to keep it getting bigger and better. Now that the party is growing **SPECIAL LIVE PERFORMANCE** we have a little bit of a budget, so we can do more. For the one in December, we had one called ‘Wreck the Halls,’ and we had indoor snowballing and a whole Santa scene onstage with Mrs. Claus up there by the fireplace taking photos with everyone in their slutty Christmas attire. That was a blast! Everyone also really loved ‘Whacked-Out Blackout.’ We will be bringing back some past themes that people loved. People also loved ‘Ani-Mayhem’ and foam parties, ‘Glitter and Fur’ and a 1920s pin-up we called ‘Anchors Away’ in to celebrate the birthday of our friend, Polly Pocket. We did a photo shoot with her and used it on the flyer. We let her pick the theme since it was her birthday and she had been part of the theme since the beginning. It was a lot of fun. odo empezó una noche en la que un grupo de amigos salimos de fiesta por las calles de Atlanta.
Nos habíamos juntado unos cinco, pero el grupo se fue disgregando más temprano que otros días. Al final solo nos quedamos Cesar y yo, los dos solos, disfrutando de un mojito, y charlando como buenos amigos. Cesar es una chico atractivo, de unos 21 años, pelirrojo y con una boca en la que cualquier hombre le gustaría perderse. Yo soy José, un chico moreno, alto, de 24 años y de cuerpo normal. Yo quería algo mas intimo con el y mucho menos que estuviera otro hombre ligero de ropa. Para rematar la jugada dijo que estaba solo en casa, y si nos parecía bien ir ahora mismo a empezar con el reportaje. Yo intente poner alguna que otra escusa, pero el estaba demasiado excitada con la idea. Asique cogimos un taxi, fui a casa, agarre todos las cosas fotográficas nos fuimos a su casa. Estábamos los tres con el puntillo de los mojitos y no fue nada difícil romper el hielo, el se quito la camisa y el pantalon y se quedo en unos pequenos boxers que no dejaban nada a la imaginacion. Mario se quedo en calzoncillos, la verdad es que no pude evitar mirar su paquete, parecía que tenía una buena cosa.
