So there I was, amongst the gays at Gay Days. While I was, in fact, there to do some “work,” the trip quickly became a contest with my friends and coworkers to see who could flirt the most or get the most hits on Grindr. It quickly became a grown-up GAY version of middle school. 8 davidatlanta
@g
I don’t know about you, but I plan to have fun living my own gay days this summer wherever I am. As for Gay Days Orlando . . . been there done that, and all I got was a lousy medium T-shirt.
m
ai

l .c
om
It’s easier to be free in a huge gay gathering like that, but what we do with our daily gay days is completely up to us. We can choose to be bitchy to those around us, or act like middle schoolers, OR we can choose to be comfortable with ourselves and our true friends. 07
There are even a few miles of convention hall displays filled with gay games, giveaways, make-up and food samples. There are also movies, indoor dance parties, and other events to fill the day if it rains or if someone needs a break from the sun. Oh, and there are porn stars on hand who love to take pictures with anyone for their Christmas cards or Facebook photos.
03
Some of the hottest, hippest DJs crank up the thumpthumping music by the pool at noon every day and blast it ‘til 3 a.m. While some people do venture away from the party to hit the theme parks, others never sober up and leave the pool area. Why should they? There’s plenty of eye candy, drinks, sun and . . . more.
The next day, on the long drive home, I started thinking about the whole idea of Gay Days. How many gays actually ascend on Orlando? How much money does Orlando bring in during that week? While it is fun meeting so many new people and getting out of town a bit, isn’t every day truly a gay day right in our own gay towns and neighborhoods?
ck
If you’ve never been, picture thousands of mostlynaked boys and men, and some lesbians, gathered from all over the world for all-day pool parties. There are quite a few hot bodies wearing super-sexy, nextto-nothing swimsuits at the pools, but there are just as many average guys wearing trunks and board shorts.
The place was packed with sweaty shirtless bodies, glistening in the strobe lights. It smelled like a cross between an Abercrombie store and a stinky locker room mixed with glitter, hairspray and lube. I wondered if Ke$ha was in the crowd somewhere. Attention Whore Rick and I worked the crowd, but neither of us were really feeling it or getting much action, so we left after a while and went back to the hotel to chill by the pool with the drunkies.
co
Despite my un-welcome experience, Gay Days Orlando, happening May 31 until June 6 , is really fun and worth the drive or flight.
We got there around 1:00 a.m. and decided to separate and check back every 45 minutes. Since Attention Whore Rick gets hit on way more than I do, I had much better odds separating from him anyway. It’s so strange yet comforting to have a friend like that. Someone who can be a cock-block if needed or become invisible yet available at a moment’s text.
an
This is how the conversation went when I arrived at the “welcome” table at Gay Days in Orlando last year. What did I expect? I love my fellow gays, but sometimes we can be bitchy.
One night my friend, “Attention Whore Rick,” and I decided to go to this all-night dance party at Arabian Nights. During the day it’s a place where families go, kind of like Medieval Times with more horses and stunts, but for this gay night the dirt floor was transformed into a huge, pulsating makeshift dance floor.
jh
“Uh sure, whatever.”
“I wish he’d buy me a drink.”
And yes, bitches, it fits.

“Uh thanks, but I don’t think I’ll be needing those. I’m here for work. You know, doing interviews and taking photos and stuff.”

“Oh, and here’s some lube and condoms.”

“Yes, you skinny, rude Adam Lambert-wannabe bitch, you can die now,” I say in my head, shooting poisonous darts with my sinister glare.

“Hancock, Hancock. (snicker) Here it is. Here’s your welcome packet, itinerary and T-shirt. You sure you can wear a medium?”

The Brent Star Report
Mr. Universe (the REAL version)
O
MG! If any of you read my column last week, you probably thought I was on crack! It was my first (and hopefully LAST) “Oops”. THIS one however, is the right one baby! It’s about a couple of weeks ago when I went to Outwrite Bookstore to check out their event called “A sneak peak at Mr. Universe”. I guess I was on drag time when I walked in considering they had already started the presentation which was a scene from the new hit play, Mr. Universe, which opens May 26th at 7 Stages. Standing before the crowd, was this New Orleans jazz player looking brother crooning the crowd with his saxophone, as passerbyers peeked in through the huge windows that encompasses the bookstore. The saxophonist paused, checked out the hottie that walked up to stand next to him who decided to take off all his clothes off (well down to his tight white briefs), to reveal his He Man/ Captain America body. After those pants came off, he started to apply blood across his chest and stomach in a stabbing motion. Blood or not, the crowd on the inside AND the outside were watching as if in a trance waiting for the next move. So, I’m thinking apparently he must be Mr. Universe. Then this loud drunk ass lady came out of nowhere, sees the hottie and asks “what the hell happened here?” (of course she’s apart of the scene), then 2 drunk drag queens came out from the back of the bookstore, saw the hottie and before you could count to 3 were making plans to take this guy home with them, you know, to “take care of him”, never minding the blood all over him. Now this was just a “teaser” combo meal that included the saxophonist, that hot body and those well seasoned actors but with a side of mystery. The actual play has all that and more, it’s a dark comedy that involves a murder mystery. In other words child, you’ll see me on the FRONT ROW when they open! There was a brief chat with the crowd and director, Del Hamilton. Immediately afterwards, the actors playing the roles, Don Finney and Dolye Reynolds, plus Mr. Universe himself, and the director headed over to Blakes for a quick cocktail (oh, and of course I tagged along too to ask just a couple of questions). Let’s talk! Brent: So tell us about your role (s). Mr. Finney: Welllllll….(sips his dirty martini, speaking in his well seasoned and sassy ‘theatre’ voice). I play a drug dealing drag queen with a bad drug habit by the name of Judy. She’s very messed up and not a very nice person. She pretty much hates
14 davidatlanta
herself b/c of a lot of rejection in her life, but when she does drag…..she feels pretty. Mr. Reynolds: I play Vick who is the nice and nurturing drag queen although my character doesn’t live in drag like Judy. In fact he (my character) works as a waiter during the day and occasional drag by night. And he’s the one who thought it would be a good idea to take Mr. Universe home to care for him. Brian Kirchner: According to the script, I play “the perfect man in the world—muscular, beautiful, half naked (plus a couple of nude scenes) and a mute”--the mute parts adds to the mystery of this. He seduces all the characters AND the audience (don’t forget to put the dollar bill in my G string). Del Hamilton: I’m the director, but I also played the role of Vick from the popular 1987 version that was done at 7 Stages. Would you like a cocktail Brent? Brent: Sure, Jack and coke please. Ok so how long have you been in the theatre and what roles are you most proud of? Finney: 30 years (my mouth dropped). “Waiting for Godot” twice at 7 Stages, A one man show about Truman Capote, “Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde” where I played Oscar Wilde to name a few. Reynolds: 17 years. A one man show called “I am my own wife” at Actors Express, several roles at Dad’s Garage, and I’m also proud of this play, Mr. Universe. Kirchner: This is my first play and it’s been a thrilling and wonderful experience. Thank you guys and I can’t wait to see “Mr. Universe”, that runs May 26-June 19th at 7 Stages. Mo’Nique, Leaders in Gay Rights
Daniels described what it has been like being gay and

“I am Lee Daniels, and I am gay,” said Daniels. “I am 51 years old, and I was born gay. This I know is true. I didn’t become gay. I was not made gay. I did not decide one day to be gay. I’m gay. I pay my taxes – ok sometimes. I’m a good father . . . There is no reason I should be made to feel like a second class citizen, but that is exactly what society says that I am. I’m not asking for more rights. I’m not asking for special rights. I’m not asking for civil rights. I just want my fucking rights, my human rights.”
During the evening, the 2011 Dan Bradley Humanitarian Award was presented to Jeff Cleghorn for his work in repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell including Congressional lobbying and serving as a liaison to senior Pentagon decision makers in LGBT matters. In addition, Paul Pate was honored as the 2011 Leon Allen &Winston Johnson Community Leadership Award recipient. Pate is the executive director of Positive Impact, the only mental health and substance abuse treatment center in the country for people living with HIV.
ck
One of the most touching moments of the evening occurred when film director Lee Daniels took the stage to introduce Academy Award-winner Mo’Nique. Daniels is best known for directing 2010’s “Precious,” which received six Academy Award nominations including Best Director.
“As I was coming here this evening, I said to my husband, what am I going to say,” said Mo’Nique. “I was sitting in my chair and all my brothers and sisters have been coming up to me and saying ‘thank you,’ and ‘we admire you,’ and ‘you inspire us,’ and ‘thank you for loving us’ . . . To give me an award this evening for loving is a little confusing for me because I feel like I should be giving each one of you in here tonight this same award for loving me when no one else would . . . I love you so completely with no judgment, and please hold your head high with no apology because God made you just the way you are supposed to be.”

Solmonese then recognized some of the highlights of the HRC’s achievements this past year, such as passing The Matthew Sheppard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Law after eleven years, and the progress made by President Obama against the Defense of Marriage Act, which Solmonese told the audience was “clearly unconstitutional.”
Mo’Nique gave a short but truly appreciative speech in which she talked about her own experiences having a gay cousin and a best friend who came out as a lesbian. She also recognized her many gay fans.
an
“After a harsh rebuke and a hefty fine (reportedly $100,000) from the NBA, Kobe wanted to apologize to me because he recognized that his behavior was utterly unacceptable,” said Solmonese. “I believe that his apology was heartfelt and that the lightning fast way in which this incident was resolved indicated to me that a profound change is at hand.”
“Speaking about being a gay man, my friend Mo’Nique, God bless her, she’s been trying to be a gay man for the last twenty years,” said Daniels. “Talk show host, inspirational speaker to fat girls everywhere, Golden Globe-winner, NAACP winner, Oscar winner, but most importantly Mom to Shalon, Jonathan, David and wife to Sid, for which she is most proud of.”
jh
HRC President Joe Solmonese began the presentation portion of the night with a story about a phone call he received from NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, who called to apologize to him personally as an act of good faith toward the entire LGBT community after Bryant received a technical foul the evening before and shouted an angry homophobic slur at the referee.
African-American and about being bullied as a child. He urged everyone to reach out to young people, who he said need support and assurance that it’s okay to be gay. He then introduced Mo’Nique, whose role as the chilling, hard-hearted, abusive mother of Precious won her critical acclaim.
at
n May 14 the Atlanta Marriott Marquis hosted one of the most memorable nights all year as the Human Rights Campaign and hundreds of supporters gathered to honor award recipients and raise funds with its 24th annual black-tie gala dinner and auction. This year’s theme was “Our Stories” and various high profile speakers shared their stories of the past year about their efforts to gain equality for all.

Lance Bass: Modern Day Role Model By Jesse A. Hancock Photos by Sony Pictures Television / Bob Mahoney
Season three of Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva” premieres June 19, and the list of guest celebrities keeps growing. Just some of that lineup includes Wendy Williams, Wanda Sykes, Kathy Griffin, Jennifer Tilly and Lance Bass.
Bass, who has been in the headlines the past few years, has been quite busy since his days as a member of mega-successful boy band, N’SYNC. He publicly came out, wrote a book, starred as the first openly-gay celebrity contestant on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” and is now spending a great deal of time as a television producer. We caught up with him on set at “Drop Dead Diva” studios in Peachtree City, Georgia for an exclusive David Magazine interview.
shows for the past ten years. Finding the right actors for roles is kind of my favorite part of the whole process.
David Magazine: Why did you agree to be on this particular show?
Lance: Well, Craig Zadan, the executive producer, is a really good friend of mine, and I love this show. I remember when he was developing it. I thought it was such a brilliant idea. For the past two years he has been, like, ‘We’ve gotta find you a part on this show.’ So I guess they finally figured out a part for me to play.

The main thing I hear is that I’m an asshole, but that is the furthest thing from the truth. I think anyone who meets me or knows me knows I’m a nice guy. The one time I’m not able to take a picture or sign an autograph is the one time that spreads like wildfire. It isn’t fair, but that’s the way it is.
David Magazine: What did you learn in the process of writing Out of Sync: A Memoir? How did people respond when you first came out publicly?
Lance: Writing that book was therapeutic for me just because I had so much bottled in that I had to hide, even to myself, for years. My sexuality was something I just ignored my whole life. I was just so focused on my career at such a young age. The thing I loved about writing the book was sharing my story. Lance: Yes, I was on my second boyfriend by that time. It sucks because I think in the gay community we’re the first to start bagging on ourselves. It really kind of hurt my feelings that a lot of people were so critical of that. Coming out is such a personal thing, and it’s a scary, scary time for most people. I’m from the South and didn’t know one openly gay person in my town. There are no gay people in small towns, haha. For most young gay people it’s a hard, confusing stage in your life and it needs to develop at your own pace.

David Magazine: How has life changed since coming out? Lance: It has been the most uplifting experience. The support I’ve received has been incredible. It completely changed my career, and people now look at me in a completely different way. People know me more personally now than professionally. I guess I’ve become more of a reality star because people know my true life. I appreciate little things, like just being able to go out in public with a guy. Back in the day I’d go in and out one door, and he’d go in and out a different door. Relationships were definitely more restrained because of that, which is so sad. David Magazine: What advice do you have for anyone struggling with his or her sexuality? Lance: Find a friend who you trust, and talk about it. I think once people start talking about it, it becomes so much easier to get the ball rolling. Just once you tell that one person. It

- Respira, putilla. – Dijo. Mi corazón empezó a acelerarse. – Dijo enojado. Yo sollozaba… Necesitaba pene. Todo me daba vueltas. Mi corazón iba a mil. Quería pene. Dame tu cosa. Necesito tu cosa. Me levanté. .

Me miraba. Su cara entre asco y odio. - ¿Crees que me tienes que recibir así? – Dijo, casi susurrando. Eran las 8. Nunca llegaba antes de las 10. Lo había hecho a propósito. - Ni me mires. ¡Me das asco! - No te muevas. - Te he dado permiso para respirar, ¿puta?.

Horoscopes Aries Your affinity with kids is heightened this week, which could mean almost anything from free babysitting to reconsidering your career choice. Don’t worry -- your amazing energy helps you make all the right decisions.
SAGITTARIUS Take a risk this week -- one you can afford, of course! It’s a really good time for you to ask someone out or to see if your boss is willing to give you additional responsibilities (for additional pay, of course).
TAURUS Your righteous nature is seeing things a bit differently right now-- it’s very definitely black and white, as far as you’re concerned.
CAPRICORN Try not to give away the store this week, even though lots of seemingly deserving supplicants come your way. You’ve only got so much to give, and for now, you need to hang on to some of it.
GEMINI You need to push your arguments as far as they can go -- all while maintaining a light, pleasant demeanor. It’s a balancing act only you can pull off, and your new found energy helps quite a bit.
AQUARIUS Your most important relationship gets a little weird this week, but it should end up being good for all parties. See if you can take any news or big changes graciously, as that’s key to your eventual success.
CANCER You need to deal with your budget issues in a forthright way -- like by deleting that spreadsheet, maybe! Spend as much as you think is needed this week and worry about the consequences later.
PISCES You need to put your blinders on for now-- metaphorically, unless your people are incredibly tolerant. Mind your own business and hope that others do the same, as drama leads nowhere good for now.
Leo Your amazing personal energy helps you to devise all sorts of creative ideas this week, and you ought to be able to convince all the right people to adopt them. It should be quite memorable! VIRGO You’re a little overworked lately, but it’s nothing you can’t handle -- right? You may have to deal with more than a few unexpected interruptions, but that’s all part of the magic. Keep at it! LIBRA You should check in with your people -they are in dire need of some leadership, and you can see how to get it for them. You may have to step in yourself, but that’s not so hard for you, is it? SCORPIO You’re dealing with a power issue that hasn’t quite risen to the level of a struggle yet. You may be able to head it off, but the best way to do that may be to simply walk away or admit defeat for now. 52 davidatlanta

Bitch Session
Some clubs need to open separate restaurants, not try to become one of them. Re: “Promoting DJ’s with Facebook and using it as shameless self-promotion”: Ever heard of having two Facebooks? And furthermore, yes, we are tools, which by definition are useful and necessities in daily Life. If promoting DJ’s, clubs and weekly events doesn’t interest you, stay off my Facebook page. Funny how you know so much! Don’t get your panties in a wad.
I’m not shallow; I just want to like the face I see when I wake up in the morning.
You don’t have to have an 8-pack and bulging biceps to be hot. I got some curves and I know I’m hella’ sexy!!
Sucks to be OTP doesn’t it? Out of the loop, I’ve made it pretty evident that I’m in a Fruit Loop. relationship. So why the hell do you not get the point that this shop is closed for business??
I’d really love to know who honestly thinks that a lack of morals and decency is attractive. It’s not. It’s just sleazy, honey.
As a gay man, I think it’s sad that I feel more at home with the lesbians and straights than my own kind because they seem to be people that think of more things than just sex. Since when did buying underwear determine the seriousness of a relationship?? Re: “Walking your dog = looking for a date.” Um, no. Walking my dog means he has to relieve himself, and I don’t want him to do it inside my house.
Don’t be a fool! Wrap your tool or you’re gonna get gonorrhea!
If it doesn’t fit with spit, it’s not true love. If these boys could see what they were doing to their bodies, I guarantee you most bars and clubs would be closed…or at least a hell of a lot cleaner.
Where are the guys that don’t like clubbing and getting shit-faced every day of the week? Surely to goodness I’m not the only one. No, not every gay likes to listen to Madonna and Gaga. There are other genres of music besides “club” and “pop,” idiot.
I’m sorry honey, but when your bush is longer than the hair on your head, then we I’ve lost a second man to porn. Do any gay got a problem. Take a trimmer to that beast, men have real careers? Doctors, scientists, damn! hell, I’ll even take a gay Atlanta cop! Why don’t we start an open dialogue between When you still look like a man after putting gays and lesbians before fighting for rights? your face on, that doesn’t fall under the definition of “female impersonator.” Just We seem to ostracize each other, yet we want the same rights. saying.
