2009 outlook

125 Senior Ben Altman tied for the team lead in wins with 16 as the starter at 125 last season, going 2-3 in conference competition. The leader on and off the mat struggled in the conference tourney last season after placing second in the 2008, so he will be looking to rebound during the 2009-10 season. Three-time Kentucky high school statechampion Matt Zarth will pressure the senior for his starting spot. The freshman newcomer was recognized as the top student-athlete in the Lexington, Ky. area during his senior year of high school, as he excelled in the classroom while posting a record of 49-2 on the mat. “We certainly expect great things from Ben, but Matt is showing us great things in the practice room,” said Patnesky. “It’s going to be a real battle for the starting spot.”

133 Alex Radsky, a junior, is expected to start at 133, but will expect a challenge from freshman Scott Ray. Radsky totaled 11 wins last season and tied for a team-high 39 points scored in dual meets. Radsky was also among Davidson’s top-finishers at the SoCon tournament, placing third. “Alex is an extremely hard-worker who is very diligent,” said Patnesky. “He tries to uncover every stone and does everything right to be as successful as he can be.” Fellow Ohio resident Ray will pressure the two-year starter for his starting slot. The talented student-athlete was the Ohio high school state runner-up during his senior season and placed third as a junior. He is expected to see significant time in his first year.

141 Alex’s twin brother, Vitaly Radsky, is expected to hold the starting spot at 141. He is one of the Wildcats’ top returners after posting a 15-10 record last season and scoring 37 dual-match points. The junior is determined to add championship wins to his resume. “Vitaly has put in the work to be a cham-

a strong challenge for his place in the lineup once Mullen returns, as the sophomore is eyeing a conference title. “Tyler is just a pure athlete,” said Patnesky. “He’s recovering from some nicks and bruises, but we think he has the ability to win the conference championship, and Tyler believes that, as well. It should be a great year for both him and Chris.”

174 Vitaly Radsky

pion,” said Patnesky. “He has made the commitment that he wants to be the conference champion, go to the NCAAs and be an AllAmerican. Vitaly’s doing the right things and looks extremely good right now. He’s going to make a serious push at the end of the year at the conference tournament.” Senior Ben Thompson will challenge Vitaly and give Davidson depth in the class.

149 The 149 class is one of the strongest for the ‘Cats with two talents in senior Carl Sandercock and sophomore David DeCamp. DeCamp impressed during his rookie campaign, earning a place on the SoCon AllFreshman team following the season and getting recognized as the Preseason All-Southern Conference selection at 149 entering 2009-10. Finishing at 10-13, DeCamp was 9-7 in dual meet competition and 3-1 in the conference, scoring a total of 39 points in 2008-09. “David has the mentality where he believes he is the best every time he steps on the mat,” said Patnesky. Sandercock enters the season coming off injury. Once he regains his form, the ‘Cats will have two strong options. “In any situation, either guy is a good guy to have on the mat,” said Patnesky.

157 Junior Joe McGinley and freshman Brent Mowry will battle for the starting nod at 157. After seeing the bulk of the starts in the class last season, McGinley worked hard over the summer to improve. He will face a strong challenge from Mowry, who was ranked nationally by Wrestling USA and was recognized as an All-American following his senior year of high school. “Mowry is a really scrappy guy from southern Maryland who’s just tough, and we really like that about him,” said Patnesky. “We’ll have the wrestle-off will see what happens. Whichever guy it is, we’ll expect him to go out and do the job that he needs to do.”

165 With SoCon All-Freshman selection Tyler Mullen sidelined early in the season due to injury, freshman Chris Cirenza will gain valuable experience with early season starts. The multi-sport athlete in high school was a threetime state runner-up in Virginia. He will face

Sophomore Jorge Estrada moves down from 197 to start at 174 this season. Estrada has worked hard during the offseason and will look to build off the experience gained in 18 matches in 2008-09. “Jorge is just a real tough kid,” said Patnesky. “He really doesn’t know what pain means, and he has continued to work on his skills.”

184

Filling the void left by Sam O’Hair will be a tough-task, as the since-graduated talent was one of Davidson’s top-finishers at the 2009 SoCon Championships. However, the Wildcats are excited to have Ike Crews, a Texas state champion in 2008, joining the squad. The rookie will start during his first season and has high-expectations. “Ike is electric,” said Patnesky. “He has no fear in him and will just go for broke at any time. To have a guy like that, who is willing to take a chance to change the tempo of a match, is a nice thing to have in your corner.”

197 Mark Jeeavratnam saw action in one meet last season, joining the team as a junior. He put in the offseason work to prepare for the full season as the Wildcats’ starter at 197. “Mark really did his job getting stronger over the summer, and is really excited to compete in his senior year,” said Patnesky.

heavyweight Among the biggest improvements on the team could be in the heavyweight class, as Charlie Wolff is poised for a breakout season in his junior year. Wolff won 11 matches last season and is looking to improve in conference action after a rigorous offseason, in which he hit both the weights and the track. The Rochester, Minn. native did not start wrestling until three years prior to entering Davidson, so his hard work learning the sport and improving physically should pay-off in March. “Charlie has made the commitment to become great,” said Patnesky. “He wants to be the conference champion and go to the NCAA tournament. He has the frame at the heavyweight class to achieve his goals, and he has really worked on his technique and become a student of the sport. Wolff is going to be a force to be reckoned with.”

Davidson wrestling enters the 2009-10 season with increased expectations, as head coach Bob Patnesky has assembled one of the most talented Davidson wrestling teams in years. With a mix of experienced veterans and talented newcomers, the ‘Cats will be looking to put on a show at the Southern Conference Championships in front of their home fans, as Davidson will host the tournament for the first time since 1988. “We’ll see how it all shakes out in the end,” said Patnesky. “We have experience in some weights, but are very young in others. It’s been awhile since Davidson has had a conference champion. The team is aware of that and wants to change it. Knowing the work and the commitment they have put in during the offseason, I think the first Saturday in March”

Parker Wrestling Room and the Wildcats' dressing room were both given in his honor by former Davidson wrestlers. Except for a five-year break with the U.S. Army Air Corp in World War II, Parker spent four decades as the Wildcats' wrestling coach. One of the highlights of his career was in 1963 when he coached the U.S. wrestling team in the Pan-American games in Brazil. He served in several national amateur wrestling associations, including the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Committee (1959-1960) and the National AAU Committee. Parker edited the NCAA Wrestling Guide and was secretary-treasurer of the Carolina Wrestling Officials Association. He was a certified international wrestling official and a charter member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. Parker was inducted into Davidson’s Hall of Fame in 1991-92

Lowell L. Bryan '68 Inducted in the HOF Class of 1994-95, Bryan was a Southern Conference wrestling champion for Davidson in 1967. He also played football and baseball for the Wildcats. In 1991 he received the James P. Hendrix Award, which is presented to the Davidson football letterman who by use of the lessons learned on the playing field has gone on to achieve outstanding success in his chosen profession. Bryan is a partner with McKinsey and Co., a New York financial consulting firm which advises top managers of companies on strategy and the impact of economic and credit changes in their industry.

Harold A. Westervelt '59 Inducted in 1997-98, Harold A. Westervelt is the only wrestler in Davidson history to win three consecutive Southern Conference championships. In 1957 and 1958, he won the conference title at 157 pounds. In 1959, Westervelt moved up to the 177 pound class and won again. In 2006, he was named to the Southern Conference's 75th Anniversary team - the only Davidson wrestler selected for that honor. Westervelt was also a three year letterman in football for the Wildcats from 1956 through 1958, the last time Davidson posted three consecutive winning seasons.

Former Davidson head wrestling coach Charlie Parker was inducted into the North Carolina chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in a ceremony held on May 17, 2008 at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.

After graduating from Davidson in 1938, Parker took over the head coaching post for the wrestling team and except for a five-year break with the U.S. Army Air Corp in World War II, spent four decades as the Wildcats' wrestling coach. He recorded 104 wins during his career, the top mark of any Davidson coach, and also holds the school record for matches coached. He served in several national amateur wrestling associations, including the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Committee (1959-1960) and the National AAU Committee. One of the highlights of his career was in 1963 when he coached the U.S. wrestling team in the Pan-American games in Brazil. Parker, who died in 1979 following a lengthy illness, edited the NCAA Wrestling Guide and was secretary-treasurer of the Carolina Wrestling Officials Association. He was a certified international wrestling official and a charter member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. Several areas in the Baker Sports Complex on the Davidson Campus are testimony to the impact Charlie Parker had on wrestling at Davidson College. The Charles W. Parker Wrestling Room and the Wildcats' dressing room were both given in his honor by former Davidson wrestlers. “Charlie Parker is truly a legend in Davidson wrestling,” said current Wildcat head coach Bob Patnesky. “He paved the way for many successful people not only in wrestling but in life, and his legacy will live on for a long time.” Parker was inducted into the Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992, becoming the first honoree to be selected from the wrestling program. He is also the first Davidson representative to earn a place in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The Wildcats’ head strength and conditioning coach, Craig Swieton, carries out the goal of Davidson’s strength and conditioning program — to increase the strength, power, speed, conditioning levels and flexibility of all student-athletes, helping reduce the risk of injury. Each team’s program, specifically designed by Swieton, aims to improve the sport energy utilization system and to increase the strength and power to the primary muscle groups used in that specific sport. In the fall of 2005, Davidson opened the Ernie Doe Weight Room, a state-ofthe-art 5,000-square-foot facility dedicated to the needs of the college’s 21 varsity athletic teams. The weight room includes 16 power racks and eight lifting platforms, as well as other cutting-edge lifting and conditioning equipment to train the whole body. Prior to his arrival at Davidson, Swieton served most recently as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Central Michigan, where he was a graduate assistant as well from 2003-05. During his career, he also helped coordinate the strength and conditioning program at Duquesne. Swieton started his career as an intern at Syracuse in the summer of 2003 working with the football team. The Frankfort, N.Y., native earned a bachelor’s degree in applied exercise science from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., in 2003. He was a member of both the football and track and field teams. Swieton is a member of both the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA). Additionally, he is a level one certified club coach through USA Weightlighting. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sport administration.

Davidson students explore the liberal arts curriculum in depth and enjoy close faculty collaboration. With 1,700 students, the college is large enough for a diverse and invigorating intellectual engagement, but small enough to foster individual experience and opportunity. Davidson offers over 850 courses and supports 21 majors and 12 academic concentrations. Students may participate in pre-law, pre-medicine, pre-dentistry or dual-degree engineering programs or may design their own independent study classes or interdisciplinary majors. Students may also apply for funds to support research and travel, and many opportunities exist for summer research positions with Davidson faculty. Personal relationships with professors and classes limited to 20 students allow for the development of creative, collaborative relationships resulting in a unique academic experience.

“Davidson cultivates an adventurous spirit, a determination to tackle life's problems, and an appreciation and understanding of those who have not had the benefit of either education or opportunity.” Wyche Fowler ‘62, Former US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia

distinctly davidson A variety of options and opportunities set Davidson apart, including its strong Honor Code, committment to community service and Division I athletics: w Davidson’s historic and student-administered Honor Code offers both the freedom and responsibility of self-scheduled and unproctored exams. w With the Dean Rusk International Studies Program, 12 Davidson-directed study abroad programs, and off-campus study programs in 17 locations worldwide, more than 70 percent of students graduate with experience abroad. w Davidson fields 21 NCAA Division I varsity teams, with athletes’ graduation rate at over 90 percent, just a few points higher than the rest of the student body. Davidson’s scholar athletes are well known for having the heaviest luggage of any team on the road—bags full of books and notes.

affordability Davidson is a national leader on affordability initiatives, with need-blind admission and meeting 100 percent of demonstrated financial need with a combination of grants and student employment. In a ground-breaking initiative known as the Davidson Trust, Davidson was the first liberal arts college to eliminate the loan component in financial aid packages. Davidson believes that its educational offerings should be affordable for every admitted student, regardless of a family’s financial means. Thanks to Davidson’s commitment to need-blind admission, a student’s character, accomplishments and academic potential are the only factors in the decision— not ability to pay.

23 rhodes scholars Davidson counts 23 Rhodes Scholars amongst its alumni. Established by the late Cecil Rhodes in 1902, the prestigious scholarship provides support for study at England’s Oxford University for students from around the world who are outstanding intellectually, and show qualities of moral leadership and social purpose.

“Unless you are a fan of Gonzaga, Georgetown, Wisconsin or Kansas, you fell stone-cold in love with Davidson this March. Real scholar-athletes representing a tiny school from a low-profile league. A self-effacing star whose shooting was nothing short of thrilling. A coach who personifies class. Trustees willing to dig into their own pockets to pay for students to come from North Carolina to Detroit to witness this.” Pat Forde, ESPN.com

davidson administration Jim Murphy, Director of Athletics

Tom Ross Davidson President

Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater on the eve of its 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics. Prior, Murphy, 52, served as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association for 10 years. The Atlanta native played football and baseball during his freshman year, invaluable experience for guiding a program unique in its desire for excellence in athletics and academics with one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” Murphy said. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the innovative $10-million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. Murphy has overseen the construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field, Alumni Stadium, Wilson Field and the football stadium expansion project, including a state-of-the-art weight room, new press box and additional permanent seating. Murphy, the 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/IAAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. A former member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and past president of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association, Murphy was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Active in the community, Murphy is involved with Social Venture Partners — Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson. His 23-year-old son, Matt, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Thomas W. Ross became Davidson’s 17th president Aug. 1, 2007, after three decades of leadership and public service in North Carolina. Ross graduated from Davidson in 1972. He graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law, taught at the University’s School of Government, joined a Greensboro law firm and served for one year in Washington, D.C., as chief of staff of a congressional office in the decade after. In 1984, Governor Jim Hunt appointed Ross as Superior Court Judge, a position he held for 17 years, and at the time, he was the youngest in the state. In his work adjudicating felony cases, Ross became familiar with a state justice system that suffered shortcomings from uneven sentencing and a burgeoning prison population. In 1990, the N.C. Chief Justice appointed him to chair a new Sentencing and Policy Advisory Committee. For two years the 23-member panel worked to create a structured sentencing system that was eventually accepted by the legislature and became a model for similar programs nationwide. For his efforts, Ross received the William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence from the National Center for State Courts. Chief Justice Rehnquist, now deceased, presented the award personally to Ross in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court. In 1999, North Carolina Chief Justice Burley Mitchell appointed Ross as director of the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts. After running the North Carolina Court System for nearly two years, Ross was invited by the trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to become the Foundation’s executive director. His seven years at the Foundation involved him in statewide issues and policy, advocating for legislative reform and creating coalitions of non-profit agencies to increase their influence in public affairs. Since becoming president of Davidson College in 2007, Ross has begun an ambitious strategic assessment process, initiated campus-wide discussions of diversity and inclusivity, and announced the name of The Davidson Trust, the college’s historic financial aid program that replaced loans with grants in all financial aid packages. Ross married the former Susan Donaldson in 1972, and they have two children, Mary Kathryn Elkins ‘01 and Thomas W. Ross, Jr. ‘99, both Davidson graduates.

The History of the Wildcat

On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in the South. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6. According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 pounds less. Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensive attack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.”

Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved overwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wild men from North Carolina.” The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preachers.” — revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives

the southern conference davidson wildcats wrestling | davidson wildcats wrestling | davidson wildcats wrestling | davidson wildcats wrestling

A majority of the sports at Davidson compete in the Southern Conference, one of the oldest conferences in the nation, which began its 89th season in 2009. The soccer, volleyball, cross country, track and field, basketball, tennis, wrestling, baseball and golf programs at Davidson all participate in the league. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907) and the Pac-10 (1915) conferences have been around longer than the SoCon (1921). The conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships, which produce participants for NCAA Championships. The Southern Conference was the first “super conference,” with charter membership including Alabama, Auburn and North Carolina. The SoCon gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball, has the oldest basketball tournament in the nation and was the college home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Stephen Curry, Jerry West and Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. Academic excellence has long been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. Eighteen Rhodes-Scholar winners have come out of the conference, including six from Davidson. Each year, the league distributes at least three graduate scholarships, two of which were won by Wildcat soccer players in 2004. The Southern Conference was born on Feb. 25, 1921, in Atlanta, Ga., when 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. The charter members were Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, N.C. State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee, and athletic competition began that fall. In 1922, seven schools — Florida, Louisiana State, Mississippi, South Carolina, the University of the South, Tulane and Vanderbilt — joined the ranks. Since then, conference membership has experienced a series of membership changes with 42 institutions being affiliated with the league. The league has undergone two major transitions during its history. The first occurred in December of 1932. The Southeastern Conference

formed out of the 23-school Southern Conference when 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized to help reduce the extensive travel demands. In 1953, Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolina and Wake Forest withdrew from the league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference, seeking to schedule a greater number of regular-season basketball games against local rivals. Today, the league continues to thrive and is home to Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008, Samford officially joined the league, bringing membership of the conference to 12. VMI is an associate member in the sport of wrestling. The SoCon currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports — football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf — and nine women’s sports — soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, tennis, golf and softball. The Southern Conference office is located in historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C.
