2011 OUTLOOK After facing strong competition during the 2010 fall season and playing courses such as The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, a future Ryder Cup site, the Davidson men’s golf team is looking to prove themselves against top competition in the spring. “Overall the fall season was good,” said head coach Tim Straub, entering his 11th season at the helm of the Wildcats. “Obviously there were times when we wished we had played better, but we showed we can compete with the best in the country.” “We had a good schedule, and I was very proud of our young guys. The freshmen, Sam Echikson and Richard Fountain, really stepped in and adjusted well not only to school, but to college golf too.” The two newcomers lived up to expectations in the fall and ended up leading the Wildcats in stroke average through four tournaments. Fountain concluded the fall season with a team-leading 72.58 stroke average, good for seventh in the conference, and fired a seasonlow 66 in the final round of the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate to force a playoff, which he won for his first collegiate medalist honor. Echikson earned a pair of top-20 finishes and concluded with a 73.83 average. “They played very well and played very consistent, and that’s not typical for freshmen, so I expect they will keep it up this spring,” said Straub. Golfweek ranked Fountain as the 67th-best graduating senior before he entered Davidson, while Echikson was a member of Belgium’s national team, so the duo will look to make their mark at the Southern Conference Championship. “Richard and Sam bring a lot of confidence and a lot of talent to the team,” said Straub. “They seldom have off days and seem to show up ready to play every time they tee it up.”

A strong group of returners, led by senior captain Bobby Urso and junior Jackson Taylor, will also look to lead the Wildcats this spring. The pair finished the 2009-10 season with the top stroke averages on the team, and Taylor earned his first collegiate medalist honors at the spring season-opening Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. Urso also fired a career-low 66 at the Southern Conference Championship. The 2010 fall season proved to be challenging for the pair, so both will be looking to rebound in the spring. Taylor was only able to compete in two tournaments, but appears back on his game after surgery, as he won the Carolinas Young Amateur over the winter. “Jackson played very well at the Carolina Young Amateurs this winter, and I think he is going to have a great spring,” said Straub. “Our captain, Bobby Urso, didn’t play as well as he would have liked in the fall, so I think he is going to turn around and have a really good spring. He is a very hard worker and he is very dedicated.”

Bramlett (Charlotte, N.C.) rounded out the freshmen class. Murray saw action at the Davidson College Invitational. After an offseason of weight lifting and yoga training, the team will open the spring slate for the sixth year in a row at Hilton Head Island, S.C. with the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Feb. 21-22. Jackson Taylor will look to defend his individual medalist title, while the team will look to improve on their third-place finish. The ‘Cats will return to the coast for the Seahawk Intercollegiate in Wilmington, N.C. the following week and face stiff competition from schools such as No. 25 Wake Forest, North Carolina and South Carolina. They will then return to competition at the Furman Intercollegiate on Mar. 18-20 and face a strong field that will also include several SoCon teams. On Apr. 9-10, Davidson and Charlotte will once again host the Irish Creek Collegiate at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis. “I think we have our strongest field ever in the history of the tournament, so we are very excited about that,” said Straub. “It’s going to be a great challenge, but I think the guys are up to it this spring.” The home tournament will be the final tuneup before the SoCon Championship, which returns to the Country Club of South Carolina Apr. 17-19. The Wildcats will look to improve upon last year’s 10th-place finish. “The SoCon is as strong as ever this year,” said Straub. “We have some really strong programs like Chattanooga, Furman and College of Charleston who have been playing well. UNCG has been playing very well, so it’s going to be tough. But we have shown that if we put it together and build our momentum as the spring goes on, there is no reason we can’t be in the mix.”

Boasting the third-best fall stroke average on the team in the fall was sophomore John Skeadas. Skeadas slid right into the starting lineup as a freshman in 2009-10, firing a 69 in his second collegiate tournament and placing sixth in the Wexford Intercollegiate. He finished the year with a 75.50 stroke average, but improved to 74.00 this past fall. Seniors Christopher Rollins and Ryan Crum will also look to be big contributors this spring. Rollins tied for 15th at the Davidson College Invitational, while Crum finished in the top-30. Sophomore Walker Allen competed twice in the fall, while senior Adam Lewicki competed in the Davidson College Invitational. A total of four newcomers joined the team for the 2010-11 season, as Ben Murray from Toronto, Ontario and local product James

HEAD COACH TIM STRAUB 11th Year Wake Forest, ‘89

Tim Straub enters his 11th season as head coach of the Davidson golf team. Since his introduction as the new coach in April of 2000, Straub has produced successful seasons and has made his own unique mark on the Wildcat program. The ‘Cats’ top performance in 2010 came at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, where Jackson Taylor tied for his first collegiate tournament victory. As a team, Davidson finished third in the 17-team field, just six strokes behind 35th-ranked Wake Forest. At the 2009 Southern Conference Golf Championships, Davidson had a pair of golfers receive honors from the conference, with senior Michael Saari being named to the All-SoCon Team, and Taylor earning AllFreshman Team honors. The 'Cats had their best team finish in three years at the conference tournament. Five years ago, Straub led the Wildcats to a third place finish in the 2005 SoCon Championships, which Davidson hosted at River Run Country Club. Leading the competition after 36 holes, Davidson ended the event with a score of 890 and its highest finish in the event since the 1973 season. For his team's accomplishment, Straub was honored as the Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in his five-year tenure. In 2003, Straub was also named SoCon Golf Coach of the Year after leading Davidson to its best finish (seventh) in the conference tournament since 1998. The 'Cats improved their efforts in 2009, moving to

sixth place at the league tournament. Straub brings an extensive list of accomplishments and experience in the sport of golf. As a teenager, Straub won the 1983 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and earned the New York State Amateur Championship title twice. He was awarded the Arnold Palmer Golf Scholarship out of high school to attend Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., and to play on the nationally- ranked Demon Deacon squad. While at WFU, Straub and the talented squad received many accolades. He played on the 1986 NCAA National Championship team as well as the 1987 NCAA runner-up team. As a senior, Straub led the Demon Deacons to the ACC Championship title and was the ACC Individual Champion. In December of 1989, Straub earned his bachelor's degree in sociology and began the next milestone in his athletic career. He became a professional golfer and joined the Hooters Tour. His first two professional wins came at the Fayetteville Classic in 1995 and then again in 1998. Following this first tour experience decided to test his abilities against the best golfers in Asia, subsequently joining the PGA Asian Tour. He was successful in this next venture as he finished in the top 15 of the tour for two consecutive seasons. He placed second in the 1996 Philippines Open and third in the 1998 Hong Kong Open. During his time on the tour, Straub continued to compete in several American tournaments. He notched top15 finishes at both the Nike Hershey Open and the 1998 Nike Greensboro Open. In 1998, Straub returned to the United States on a permanent basis and competed in a variety of tournaments. One of his crowning achievements as a professional came when he qualified for the 1998 U.S. Open in San Francisco. He placed second in the 2000 Buy.com Upstate Classic on the strength of a secondround 63. Straub also finished seventh at the 2001 Panama Open and 15th at the 2001 Buy.com Dayton Open. In addition to being a full-time coach and running his own junior golf camp, Straub has continued to advance his personal game. In the summer of 2004, Straub won the 80th Coastal Federal Bank Carolinas Open at the Surf Golf and Beach Club in South Carolina, and in 2003 he shot an even-par 71 to share medalist honors at a U.S. Open qualifier to

advance to the sectional qualifying round. In May of 2006, Straub came up one stroke short of another title at the 81st Coastal Federal Bank Carolinas Open at the Surf Golf & Beach Club. One month later he continued his successful summer run, capturing his second CPGA major championship by winning the 2005 North Carolina Open held at River Landing Country Club in Wallace, N.C. In the summer of 2009, Straub added to his long list of playing accomplishments as he finished second in the 43rd Annual North Carolina Open. His final score of four-under 209 (68-73-68) placed him in a tie for first among professional golfers. Along with his impressive showing at the North Carolina Open, Straub just missed his second U.S. Open as he advanced to the sectional qualifier. Because of his professional and teaching experience, Straub has a wealth of knowledge to share with his Wildcat players. "I don't see any reason why we can't compete for the conference championship year after year," he said. Straub is married to Jennifer Straub, the head coach of the women's cross country and track & field teams at Davidson. The couple has a son, William, 12, and a daughter, Sydnee, 9.

HOME COURSES BIRKDALE GOLF COURSE An Arnold Palmer-designed course, Birkdale Golf Course is located in Huntersville off Interstate 77 (Exit 25). Ranked among Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” in 2001, Birkdale is both walkable and challenging. The course is located between 200 acres of rolling terrain, carved between tall oaks, spruces, pines and natural streams. The 7,013 yard, par-72 course has Bermuda fairways and bentgrass greens. Other Birkdale features include a state-of-the-art lighted practice facility, a driving range with several target greens, a large chipping green and two wellmaintained putting greens. The fifth hole at Birkdale Golf Course in Huntersville, N.C., one of the home Birkdale’s 10,000 square foot clubcourses for the Davidson men’s golf team since 1998. house houses two conference rooms and Arnie’s Tavern, serving lunch, dinner and drinks daily. Birkdale has received a good deal of acclaim, being voted one of the top five public golf courses in North Carolina. When it opened in 1997 it was voted The Best New Golf Course in North Carolina and was named Charlotte's Best Public Course in 1998. Four sets of tees allows golfers of all abilities to enjoy the layout at Birkdale. The course features a number of elevation changes, which are appealing to the eye and add to the challenge. Well placed water hazards require players to use every shot in their bag. Birkdale Golf Club and Course has been home to the Davidson Wildcats since 1998.

HOME COURSES RIVER RUN COUNTRY CLUB River Run Country Club located in beautiful Davidson, N.C., is often noted for its championship golf course, recognized by Golf Reporter as one of the finest in the Southeast. Designed to complement its’ natural setting, River Run weaves through a landscape of lakes, rolling hills, the Rocky River and centuries-old forests. Additionally, the course will underwent a complete renovation in 2007, including rebuilding all of the greens and laser leveling all tee boxes. The renovation of the driving range and practice facility was completed in the spring of 2006. ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION Jim Murphy Director of Athletics

Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, 54, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. An Atlanta native, Murphy played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. Davidson has claimed the Southern Conference Graduation Rate Award for the last nine years, sharing the honor with Wofford in 1999-2000. In addition, Davidson has won the SoCon's Barrett-Bonner Award, given to the school that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league’s academic honor roll, 16 times in the award's 18-year history. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10 million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. The construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, the new Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and practice facility and the football stadium expansion project, which included a state-of-theart weight room, a new press box and additional permanent seating, all have come during Murphy's tenure. The 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, Murphy served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his 25-year-old son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

HISTORY OF THE WILDCAT

On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in the South. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6. According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 pounds less. Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensive attack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.” Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved overwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wild men from North Carolina.” The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preachers.” — revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE A majority of the sports at Davidson compete in the Southern Conference, one of the oldest conferences in the nation, which began its 89th season in 2009. The soccer, volleyball, cross country, track and field, basketball, tennis, wrestling, baseball and golf programs at Davidson all participate in the league. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907) and the Pac-10 (1915) conferences have been around longer than the SoCon (1921). The conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships, which produce participants for NCAA Championships. The Southern Conference was the first “super conference,” with charter membership including Alabama, Auburn and North Carolina. The SoCon gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball, has the oldest basketball tournament in the nation and was the college home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Stephen Curry, Jerry West and Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. Academic excellence has long been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. Eighteen Rhodes-Scholar winners have come out of the conference, including six from Davidson. Each year, the league distributes at least three graduate scholarships, two of which were won by Wildcat soccer players in 2004. The Southern Conference was born on Feb. 25, 1921, in Atlanta, Ga., when 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. The charter members were Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, N.C. State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee, and athletic competition began that fall. In 1922, seven schools — Florida, Louisiana State, Mississippi, South Carolina, the University of the South, Tulane and Vanderbilt — joined the ranks. Since then, conference membership has experienced a series of membership changes with 42 institutions being affiliated with the league. The league has undergone two major transitions during its history. The first occurred in December of 1932. The Southeastern Conference formed out of the 23-school Southern Conference when 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized to help reduce the extensive travel demands. In 1953, Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolina and Wake Forest withdrew from the

league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference, seeking to schedule a greater number of regular-season basketball games against local rivals. Today, the league continues to thrive and is home to Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008, Samford officially joined the league, bringing membership of the conference to 12. VMI is an associate member in the sport of wrestling. The SoCon currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports — football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf — and nine women’s sports — soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, tennis, golf and softball.
