DAVIDSON WILDCATS
2010-11 OUTLOOK
2009-10 was a banner year for the Davidson men’s swimming and diving team. At the 2010 CCSA Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., the Wildcat men defeated Gardner-Webb, 907-653, to earn the first league championship title in school history. Individually, Drew Onken was honored as Most Outstanding Male Freshman Performer after winning the 400 IM and swimming on the winning 200 and 400 medley and 800 freestyle relays. Ben Lane earned Most Outstanding Male Diver honors for a second straight season after sweeping the diving events. Head coach John Young was named Men’s Coach of the Year after leading his Wildcats to their first-ever championship, and diving coach Aaron Hintz was named coDiving Coach of the Year. Onken, who was named Mid-Major AllAmerica Honorable Mention by collegeswimming.com for his NCAA B-cut time in the 400 IM, returns with a year of experience, poised for a breakout season. And with Lindsey Martin making a historic NCAA appearance for the Davidson swimming and diving program last season, Onken — who set four Davidson records in his rookie season and swam on two record-setting relays, is hoping to do the same for the Wildcat men. But Davidson is far from a one-man band, with junior Geoffrey Peitz, who swept the backstrokes and set a new school record in the 100 at the league championships, and senior Bryan Droll, the conference’s individual champion and school-record holder in the 50 free, also on the roster. Junior Joe Burquist, who set a school record with his win in the 100 fly at the league championships, and classmate Curtis Chaney won the 200 free and holds the Davidson record in the 500 free, pose additional threats. With this kind of depth and talent across the board, the Davidson men expect nothing less than a second league championship title. Distance Freestyle
The school-record holder in both the 200 and 500 freestyles, Chaney leads the Wildcats in the mid-distance freestyle events. At last season’s conference championship, Chaney was the individual champion in the 200
freestyle with a time of 1:39.90 and a finalist in both the 500 and 100 freestyles, finishing second and third, respectively. Named 2009 Most Outstanding Freshman Male Performer, Chaney will continue to challenge the record books and battle for individual titles at this year’s conference championship. Junior Brian Seo is the Wildcats’ greatest threat in the 1000 freestyle. Davidson’s top finisher a year ago, he placed sixth in the event at the 2010 CCSA championships with a time of 16:52.46. Seo has two seventh-place swims on the Davidson Top-10 performers list, (9:51.89, 1000 free; 16:23.96, 1650 free) and will build on two solid years of experience in his third season. The Wildcat distance corps will also get a boost from freshmen Ethan Levinson and Will Fox. Sprint Freestyle
The Wildcats have 50 freestyle record holder Droll on their roster for one final season to lead the sprint freestyle group. Droll was the individual champion in the event at the 2010 CCSA Championships, swimming a Davidson-best 20.49 for his first conference title, and swam on the Wildcats’ winning 200 and 400 freestyle and 200 and 400 medley relays. The senior sprinter is also a Wildcat Top-10 performer and was a championship finalist in the 100 free, ranked third with a time of 45.69, and finished in seventh in the 200 freestyle at the CCSAs. Peitz has the third best 50 free time in Davidson history, the 20.81 he swam on the leadoff leg of the Wildcats’ winning 200 freestyle relay at the 2010 CCSA championship. He is also a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 100 free (:45.75) and was a member of Davidson’s winning 400 freestyle relay at last year’s league championships. Behind Droll and Peitz, the Wildcat sprint group has great depth with two more Top-10 performers in sophomore Wills Cooper and senior Tennant Brastow. Cooper is fourth in Davidson history in the 50 free (20.43) behind his fifth-place finish at the CCSAs, where he was also a part of the Wildcats’ winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Brastow is a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 50 free, ranking 10th
with a time of :21.37. Sophomore Ben Wilde and freshmen Quinn Waggoner, Levinson, Thomas Bigham and Drew Gustavson add depth as well. Butterfly
The Wildcats are led in the butterfly events by Davidson record-holders and conference champions Burquist and Onken. After finishing fifth in the 100 fly in his rookie season, Burquist won the event with a Davidson-best time of 49.43. He also swam the butterfly leg on the team’s winning 200 medley relay and is a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 fly, ranking 10th with a time of 1:54.98. A breaststroke specialist, Onken swam the best 200 fly time in program history at the University of Georgia’s Last Chance Bulldog Invitational last season, adding to his already outstanding rookie resume. It was the last of four Davidson records Onken set in his first season with the Wildcats. As a Top-10 performer in both the 100 and 200 fly, Peitz gives the Wildcats another threat, ranking eighth in the 100 fly with a time of 51.80 and second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.84. He was also a member of all four of Davidson’s winning relays at the 2010 CCSA championships. Kerman, a Wildcat Top-10 performer with a time of 1:54.51 in the 200 fly to rank eighth, and upperclassmen Tim Keating and Marcus Carson will contribute in the butterfly events along with freshmen Fox and Bigham. Backstroke
A capable flyer and critical member of Davidson’s relays, Peitz is the Wildcats’ star in the backstroke events. The school recordholder in the 100 back behind a leadoff leg of 50.06 on the Wildcats’ winning 400 medley relay, Peitz won both the 100 and 200 backstrokes at the 2010 CCSA championships. His winning time of 1:48.81 in the 200 back ranks second in Davidson history and is less than two tenths off the record. Behind Peitz, Davidson has a host of capable Davidson Top-10 backstrokers in Brastow, Kerman, Burquist and Onken. Brastow is a Top-10 performer in both the 100 back and

the 200 back, ranking fifth with a time of 52.00 and ninth with a time of 1:53.81, respectively. Kerman ranks sixth in the 200 back with a time of 1:52.04, and Burquist is seventh with a time of 52.22. Onken is third on the Davidson Top-10 list in the 200 back with a time of 1:49.39. Carson, Levinson, Keating and Gustavson will also contribute in the backstroke events. Breaststroke
Onken swam onto eight Top-10 lists in his freshman season, but he is the Wildcats’ ace breaststroker. With a winning and Davidsonbest time of 2:00.25 in the 200 breaststroke at the 2010 CCSA championships, Onken earned CCSA Freshman Male Performer of the Year honors. He is also a Davidson Top-10 performer in the 100 breaststroke, ranked sixth with a CCSA runner-up time of 57.55, and swam on Davidson’s winning 200 and 400 medley and 800 freestyle relays. The versatile Kerman is ranked seventh on the Davidson Top-10 list with a time of 58.48, and senior Ben Lucas was a championship finalist in the 200 breast, finishing sixth at the 2010 CCSAs. The pair, plus newcomers Drew Glenn, Bigham and Gustavson, solidify the Wildcat breaststroke events. Individual Medley
In his first season, Onken rewrote the Davidson record books, and the coaching staff is expecting no less in his second goround. In addition to his new school standards in the 200 fly and 200 breast, Onken swam new program bests in both the 200 and 400 individual medleys. He won the 400 IM and finished second in the 200 IM at the 2010 CCSAs. In his final meet of the season, the Bulldog Invitational, he broke his own record, finishing with a 3:49.79 in the 400 IM, an NCAA B-cut time that earned him MidMajor All-America Honorable Mention by collegeswimming.com. Peitz was the Davidson record-holder in the 200 IM before Onken’s arrival, and with a third-place finish at the CCSA championships, the junior remains both second on Davidson’s Top-10 performers’ list with his
4
time of 1:50.07 and a viable threat for the top spot. He is also a Davidson Top-10 performer in the 400 IM, 10th with a time of 4:10.14. Kerman remains a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 400 IM, sitting at third with a time of 4:03.43 from the 2009 league championships. He swam onto the Top-10 in the 200 IM as well with a fifth-place time of 1:54.98 at the 2010 CCSAs. Lucas and Seo have also been ranked in the Top 10 in their Davidson careers and have the potential to make an impact in the medleys, as do newcomers Glenn and Levinson. Diving
Without the services of two-time CCSA Diver of the Year Ben Lane, the Wildcats face an uphill battle in the diving events and will need to get some production out of newcomer Brian McRae and returning Nick Taylor to make up the difference in scoring. McRae was an All-State diving champion in Maine and has plenty of potential, while Taylor scored points for the Wildcats with a pair of fifth-place finishes at the 2010 CCSAs. He earned scores of 129.42 and 142.47, respectively, on the 1-meter and the 3-meter events a season ago. Schedule
The Wildcats open their 2010-11 slate with three straight non-league road meets, traveling to Clemson, East Carolina and NC State. Davidson opens its season in dual-meet competition against Clemson for a third straight season, while East Carolina occupies the second weekend on the Wildcats’ schedule for a third straight season. In a third straight road meet, Davidson will travel to NC State Oct. 23. On Oct. 30, the defending league champion Wildcat men host CCSA-foe College of Charleston, their first test in conference competition. The Wildcats finish the first half of the schedule at the Invitational at Kenyon College, where Davidson has consistently shattered college records for the past three seasons in the competitive field. After the holiday season, Davidson hosts three straight meets, as Georgia Tech, Howard and VMI visit Cannon Natatorium.
DAVIDSON WILDCATS
One final road meet at league-foe Gardner-Webb on Jan. 29 later, the Wildcats will defend their league championship when the 2011 CCSA Championships get underway in Athens, Ga., on Feb. 17. With Lindsey Martin becoming the first Wildcat swimmer to compete at the NCAA Championships last season, the Davidson men are eager to replicate that success, aiming to make an appearance at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Minneapolis March 24-26.

2010-11 SWIMMING & DIVING

2010-11 OUTLOOK
Unlike the Wildcat men, the Davidson women’s swimming and diving team did not win the 2010 CCSA Championship, instead finishing in the runner-up spot to Florida Gulf Coast. But even without a team title, the 2010-11 team was anything but a failure for the Wildcat women. In 2010-11, Lindsey Martin set three individual school records, three relay school records and two conference records, won three individual titles at the CCSA championships en route to earning Most Outstanding Swimmer honors and became the first ever Davidson swimmer to earn a spot at the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships. Martin capped off the most successful individual season in Davidson swimming history by earning MidMajor All-America honors from collegeswimming.com. But Martin isn’t the only Wildcat who experienced success. Instead, she’s a part of a senior class 10 strong who have destroyed the Davidson record books over the course of their careers. Emily Castle is the school’s record-holder in the 100 fly and a part of four school-record holding relays. Jessica Delgehausen holds the Davidson record in the 500 free, and Anna Stringfield is the record-holder in the 400 IM and a member of the school-record holding 800 freestyle relay. Behind these seniors, the Wildcat women have a wealth of talent and depth. Junior Lauren Kamperman is the school’s record holder in both the 200 fly and 200 IM, while sophomore Kelsi Hobbs made a splash in her first season, setting the record in the 100 back and as a part of the 200 and 400 medley relays. Sophomore Jean DeOrnellas (200 free) and junior Casey VanTassell (200, 400 and 800 free) are also members of school-record holding relays. So while Martin looks to make it back to the 2011 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, March 17, and maybe take some teammates with her, the Davidson women have plenty of talent to once again challenge for the league championship. Distance Freestyle
In her final season, senior Jessica Delgehausen is the Wildcats’ leader in the
10
distance freestyle events. The school-record holder in the 500 freestyle, Delgehausen is also ranked second on the Wildcat Top-10 performers list in both the 1000 free and the 1650 free and could challenge Alanna Ream’s college records in both. She is also ranked third among Wildcat Top-10 performers in the 200 free, an all-around valuable contributor in freestyle events. Behind Delgehausen, the Wildcat women have plenty of depth in the distance corps, led by Allison Cottle and Stringfield. Cottle swam onto four Wildcat Top-10 lists in her rookie season and is poised for another good year. A championship finalist in the 1650 freestyle at the 2010 CCSAs, Cottle ranks fifth among Davidson performers. She also swam in the consolation final in the 500 freestyle, finishing 14th to rank eighth on the Wildcat Top-10 performer list, and is a Davidson Top-10 performer in the 1000 free (eighth) and the 200 fly (third). While Stringfield is the school’s record holder in the 400 IM, she is also a member of the Wildcats’ school-record holding 800 freestyle relay. The versatile Stringfield is on seven Wildcat Top-10 performer lists, including the 200 free (second), 500 free (fourth) and 1000 free (fifth). She also swam on Davidson’s winning 400 freestyle relay at the 2010 CCSA championships. Davidson also will get production out of Kamperman, who is a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 free (10th) and junior Meagan Madden, who ranks 10th in the 500 freestyle, sixth in the 1000 freestyle and eighth in the 1650 freestyle. Senior Casey Gemunder has also been a CCSA championship finalist in the distance freestyle events in the past, while sophomore Lillie Seifart swam into fifth in the 500 free on the Wildcat Top-10 performer list with her seventh-place finish at the 2010 CCSA championships. Newcomers Marisa Martinson and Megan McLeod will also contribute for Davidson in the distance events. Sprint Freestyle
Martin, the most decorated swimmer in program history, leads the Wildcats in the sprint freestyles. The school-record holder in
DAVIDSON WILDCATS
the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles made Davidson history when she qualified for the 2010 NCAA Championships with her winning time in the 100 freestyle at the 2010 CCSA championships. Martin was selected the 2010 Most Outstanding Female Swimmer at the CCSA championships for winning three individual titles and two relay titles. Named 2010 MidMajor All-America by collegeswimming.com, she became the first Davidson swimmer to compete at the 2010 NCAA championships, swimming in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles. She failed to final in any of her three races, but swam a pair of best times, in the 100 and 200 freestyles. Success for Martin will once again be defined by an NCAA appearance, this year to be held in Austin, Texas, on March 17. Martin is the only Wildcat to advance to the NCAA championships, but she is certainly not the only Davidson sprinter to make a splash at the 2010 CCSA championships. Castle is second to Martin on the Wildcat Top-10 performers list in both the 50 and the 100 freestyle and was a finalist in both events at last season’s league championships. She finished fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the 50 free and swam on Davidson’s winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Behind Martin and Castle, Davidson also gets plenty of production out of VanTassell and DeOrnellas. VanTassell was a member of the Wildcats’ winning 200 freestyle relay at the 2010 CCSA championships and is also a Davidson Top-10 performer in the 50 free (fifth), 100 free (fourth) and 200 free (sixth). A valuable relay team member, she is also a member of Davidson’s record-holding 400 and 800 freestyle relays. DeOrnellas swam on the school-record holding 200 freestyle relay and is a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 50 free (fourth) and 100 free (fifth). Senior Alexa Richardson is also a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 50 free (seventh) and should once again contribute to the Wildcat sprint events, while newcomer Liz Mace could make an impact as well. Butterfly
An important part of the Wildcat sprinting corps, Castle is also one of Davidson’s ace
2010-11 OUTLOOK
fliers. The Davidson record-holder in the 100 fly, Castle is also the two-time defending conference champion in the event. In addition to her dominance in the 100 fly, she is also a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 fly (eighth) and a critical cog in Davidson’s relays. As a sprinter, she is a member of every school-record holding relay except the 800 freestyle relay and was a part of both the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays at the 2010 CCSA championships. Kamperman holds the Davidson record in the 200 fly and finished 10th in the event in the consolation final at the 2010 CCSA championships. She is also a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 100 fly (sixth). Along with record-holders Castle and Kamperman, Davidson will count on senior Casey Gemunder, a 2010 CCSA consolation finalist in the 200 fly, Hobbs, Cottle and DeOrnellas in the butterfly events. A backstroke specialist, Hobbs is also a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 fly, ranking second behind her performance at the 2010 Nike Invitational at Kenyon College. A distance specialist, Cottle is third in the 200 fly behind her swim at the league championships last season. And DeOrnellas ranks fourth on the Wildcat Top-10 performer list in the 100 fly with her 10th-place finish in the consolation final at the conference meet. Newcomer Mace will also get a chance to swim some butterfly events for Davidson. Backstroke
After an outstanding rookie season, Hobbs will once again lead Davidson in the backstroke events. With her leadoff backstroke leg in the school-record setting 400 medley, Hobbs set a new Davidson standard in the 100 backstroke. She also swam the backstroke leg of the Wildcats’ school-record setting 200 medley relay. Hobbs was a championship finalist in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events at last season’s league championships, finishing eighth in the latter to move into third on the Wildcat Top-10 performer list. Stringfield is another capable backstroker for the Wildcats, entering her final season ranked second in the 200 backstroke on the Wildcat Top-10 performer list behind her fourth-place finish at the 2009 CCSA champi-
onships. She is also ranked fifth in the 100 backstroke on the strength of her leadoff leg in the Wildcats’ 200 medley relay at the 2009 league championships. Martin also ranks ninth among Wildcat Top-10 performers in the 100 backstroke, and junior Meagan Madden is eighth in the 200. Breaststroke
If the Wildcat women have a weakness, it is in the breaststroke events. And yet the roster is full of breaststrokers who could make a difference for Davidson. The Wildcats have a pair of Top-10 performers in seniors Ineke Stegger and Hailey Szymczak. Stegger ranks fifth in the 200 breast and ninth in the 100 breast. Likewise, Szymczak is ranked 10th among Wildcat Top-10 performers in the 100 breaststroke from her performance at the 2009 CCSA championships. Davidson also hopes for production out of Richardson and junior Juliana Porter, as well as newcomers Caroline Vrana, Lee Crittenberger and Megan McLeod. Individual Medley
Stringfield and Kamperman will once again lead the Wildcats in the medleys. Stringfield is the Wildcats’ school-record holder in the 400 IM and swam into third in the 200 IM with her 11th-place finish in the consolation final at the 2010 league championships. She finished fourth in the 400 IM at the CCSAs a season ago, but swam her program-best time at the 2009 championships.. Kamperman set the school record with her fourth-place finish in the 200 IM at the 2010 CCSA championships. She is second to Stringfield among Wildcat Top-10 performers in the 400 IM with her fourth-place finish at the 2009 league championships. Kamperman placed fifth in the event at the 2010 CCSAs. Behind Kamperman and Stringfield, Davidson has two more Wildcat Top-10 performers in Stegger and Seifart. Stegger ranks fifth in the 200 IM and ninth in the 400 IM, while Seifart ranks fourth behind her 10thplace finish at last year’s league championships. Newcomer Vrana could also get a chance to contribute in the individual medleys.
Diving
With the loss of Kelsey Chisholm and Linnea Buttermore to graduation, the Wildcat women will count on junior Jessica Ardecky and newcomer Kaliya Burton-Akright to score crucial points in dual and championship competition. Ardecky finished fifth on both boards at the 2009 CCSA championships, and the coaching staff thinks Burton-Akright has potential to score as well. Schedule
Like the Wildcat men, the women open their 2010-11 slate with three straight road meets, traveling to Clemson, East Carolina and NC State, before hosting CCSA-foe College of Charleston, Oct. 30. After the Nike Invitational at Kenyon College, Davidson hosts three straight meets in the New Year, as Georgia Tech, Howard and VMI visit Cannon Natatorium. In addition to competition with Howard, the ‘Cats will also race against CCSA-foes Campbell, Georgia Southern, N.C. A&T and Radford on Jan. 22. After a final road meet at Gardner-Webb on Jan. 29 the Wildcats will compete at the 2011 CCSA Championships in Athens, Ga., Feb. 17-19. Martin and her teammates hope to finish their season with an appearance at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, March 17-19.

COACHING STAFF CHRIS BRAMMER
AMY KRAKAUER
Assistant Coach Second Year Truman State ‘06
Assistant Coach First Year Columbia ‘08
Chris Brammer joined the Davidson family as an assistant coach to begin the 2009-10 season, after three successful years of graduate school and coaching at Indiana University. During his graduate work at Indiana, Brammer studied human performance under the direction of Dr. Joel Stager at the Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming. Based on the teaching and coaching philosophy of the legendary Dr. James Counsilman, the Counsilman Center serves as a research center and resource for the swimming community. Brammer played a pivotal role in research projects that included an analysis of the progression of elite and masters swim performance across time, measurement and identification of swimming power, the development of training devices and protocols specific to swim performance, the relationship between selected anthropometric dimensions and flutter kick performance, and recovery aides following endurance exercise. His Masters thesis, titled “Cutaneous Input and Motorneuron Excitability,” was in regard to the effect of shaving on swim performance. “Chris’s education equips him with first-rate technical knowledge,” head swimming coach John Young said. “And his ability to address not only ‘what’ questions, but also ‘why’ questions will advance the effectiveness of training sessions and the intellectual engagement of our athletes. He’s a great fit for our student-athletes, and they’ll enjoy his expertise.” In addition to his responsibilities as a graduate student, Brammer served as an assistant coach for local high school and middle school swim teams, and as co-head coach at the Counsilman Center Swim Team (CCST). In the spring of 2010, Brammer served as the first head coach of an age-group swim team in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Brammer earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from Truman State University, where he was a four-year varsity letter winner and three-time academic All-American. Competitively, he competed at the NCAA Division II Championship three times, earning NCAA All-America honors twice and Honorable-Mention All-America honors five times as a butterfly specialist. He is a native of Omaha, Nebraska.
Krakauer joins the Wildcat swimming and diving staff for the 201011 season after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Colgate University, where she coached the middle distance and stroke swimmers. “I am delighted to introduce Amy Krakauer as the newest member of the Davidson swimming and diving family,” head coach John Young said. “Her experiences, both as a student-athlete and as a professional, make her a unique and impressive fit for our program.” In her two seasons with the Raiders, the middle distance team achieved 231 personal best times, 27 school records, 22 Patriot League records, 15 NCAA B-cut times and the women’s team won the 2009 Patriot League Championship. Krakauer also coached Emily Murphy, who became Colgate’s first female NCAA championship competitor, in the 200 IM and the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. “Coach Krakauer is familiar with the perspective necessary to be successful in a rigorous academic setting,” Young said. “As our student-athletes aspire to ever-greater successes, I am confident that Amy will be a tremendous resource and mentor.” Krakauer’s coaching experience also includes stints at Nike Swimming Camps in 2006 and 2007 and as the head coach of the Columbia Masters Swimming program from 2005-08, while she was also a four-year member of the Columbia women’s swimming and diving team. Krakauer was a four-year letter winner for the Columbia Lions, earning First-Team All-Ivy honors in 2008, as a member of the winning 200 medley relay and runner-up 400 medley relay, and the runner-up in the 100 breast with an NCAA B-cut time at the Ivy League championships. She also earned Academic All-America Honorable Mention honors in 2008 and Academic All-Ivy honors in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The former team captain was also an NCAA Sportsmanship Award Ivy League nominee in 2006 and the Coaches Award winner in both 2005 and 2006. Krakauer earned her B.A. in Economics and German from Columbia in May of 2008, where she was an eight-semester honoree on the Dean’s List. She is a native of Colorado Springs, Colo. She recently completed the Ironman Lousiville 2010, where she won her age group and earned a qualifying slot in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.

HONORS & AWARDS Swimmer of the Meet Lindsey Martin, 2010 Adding another honor to one of the most impressive resumes in Davidson history, Lindsey Martin was named Women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer at the 2010 CCSA Championships as she swept the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events and posted CCSA records in both the 50 (22.57) and 100 freestyles (49.65). Martin opened her competition schedule by winning the 50 free for a third straight season, with a new Davidson and CCSA-record, NCAA-B cut time of 22.57. She won her second individual title the following day, behind another NCAA B-cut and school-record time of 1:49.02 in the 200 freestyle. On the final day of competition, Martin won her third individual title, with her third NCAA B-cut time, in the 100 freestyle. Her winning time of 49.65 was also the third school record and second CCSA record she set at the meet. Martin also anchored the Wildcats’ winning 200 free relay, which set a new school and CCSA record, and 400 freestyle relays, as well as Davidson’s runner-up 200 and 400 medley relays, which set new school records. She became the Wildcats’ first ever NCAA qualifier on the strength of her time in the 50 freestyle at the 2010 CCSA championships, and she also competed in the 100 and 200 freestyles.
Megan Hollar, 2006 In the final meet of her illustrious Wildcat career, Megan Hollar won three individual titles — the 200 breast, 100 breast and 200 IM, at the 2006 CAAs to earn Swimmer of the Meet, and ultimately, CAA Female Swimmer of the Year honors. Hollar, who first won the 100 breast at the 2004 CAAs, is the only swimmer in the program’s history to win an individual title at the CAA conference championship meet, finishing her career with four wins. Along the way, she set a new school record in both the 200 breast, with an NCAA-B standard time of 2:17.80, and the 100 breast, with a time of 1:03.30 to also become the first Wildcat to hold a CAA meet record. She is also a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 free. Hollar was named the 2005-06 CAA Female Swimmer of the Year, the first Davidson swimmer ever to receive the honor.
Mary Shell Brosche, 1999 & 2000 Mary Shell Brosche’s performances at the Southern States Championships in 1999 and 2000 earned her back-toback top swimmer honors and helped the Wildcat women to consecutive team titles. Brosche won the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 back events in both years and was once the school record holder in both IMs. Extremely versatile, Brosche remains on two additional Wildcat Top-10 lists — the 100 back, the 200 back and the 100 fly.

WILDCAT HISTORY 2010 NCAA Championships Martin Selected to NCAA Championships, First Swimmer in Davidson History DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Becoming the first Davidson swimmer in the program history to do so, junior Lindsey Martin was selected to the 2010 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., at Boilermaker Aquatic Center, March 18-20. Martin was invited for the Wildcats based on her time in the 50 free, after qualifying with a winning, school and league-record time of 22.57 at the CCSA Championships last month. She will also compete in the 100 freestyles and 200 freestyles, after swimming NCAA B-cut times in both events. Martin earned Swimmer of the Meet honors for a second straight year after sweeping the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles at the league championships and anchoring the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays, helping Davidson to a runner-up finish. She is the Davidson record holder in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles and as a member of the 200 and 400 medley and 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Martin Takes It All in Stride; Prepares for NCAA Championships An excerpt from an interview with Martin before the NCAAs, where she discussed what it was like to become Davidson's first NCAA qualifier. Q: You are swimming the 50, the 100 and the 200 at the NCAAs. Do you have a favorite event? Least favorite? Lindsey: My favorite was always the 50 just because it is so short. You gut it, and it’s done. But until this last conference meet, I have always been better at the 100, just because I have the “sprintiness,” but I also train enough to have the endurance to hold it for a 100. So just so out of the blue, I had a really good 50, and so now that’s kind of my main event, but is kind of a toss up between the two. The 200 is just way too long. I flip at the 100, and I think I should be done right now, but there’s a whole other 100 to go. I’m a sprinter. I want to get it done. Q: What was your goal going into this season? Lindsey: Really my goal this season, as it is for every season, is really just earn as many points as I can at conference for my team. I want our women’s team to look really good at the end of the year, and so my number one goal is to win my events at conference. And then after that, I wanted to go best times. My next goal was just to see what a whole year of training would amount to, and I ended up dropping a lot of time in my 50 at conference, and that is what ended up qualifying me for the NCAAs. Q: What’s it like to become Davidson’s first NCAA qualifier? Lindsey: It’s really cool, but it’s not the kind of thing I was expecting, I guess especially in the 50. Because you dive in and it’s just crazy and it all happens so fast. You just have to gut it and hope it works out. And it was kind of surprising when I touched, and I had gone as fast as I had. Q: How has your preparation for the NCAAs compared to other meets, like the CCSA Championships? Lindsey: Once you start tapering for conference, you slowly start losing yards and doing more concentrated speed sets. Your practices aren’t as long. And now that I am past conference, I did about a week of a few harder practices, and now I am just tapering even more. I have never tapered this long before, but everybody else is in my situation. Q: What has the reaction been like amongst your teammates and on campus? Lindsey: The team is very excited for me right now. It is kind of hard too because as long as I have been swimming, I have gotten to stick with the schedule of the team. And right now is usually when we get our break, and we get to sleep late and go play Frisbee, but I have to stay in the water. So that’s not so fun because the team aspect is what I like so much, but a few girls have been swimming with me, and my roommate Jessica Delgehausen is going to come with me. Being there by myself makes it a me thing, and I don’t like that about swimming. I really appreciate all the support, but I hate getting all the attention, too, when all the other people on the team work just as hard, if not harder. Q: What’s your routine like on the day of a meet? Lindsey: I get really intense behind the block. I definitely have had people on the team comment on how I look super scary. I didn’t realize I did this until recently, but a guy on the team pointed out to me that whenever I am going to swim relays, I turn and look at the people that I am going to swim. When I hit the water, I need to absolutely want to get it all out. That’s what I like about sprinting; you don’t have to pace yourself. Q: What’s your favorite swimming memory this far? Lindsey: Freshman year, we swam UNCW, the last time we swam them in a dual meet. It was our senior meet, and our team hadn’t beaten them in a really long time. That meet ended up coming down to the last relay, and I actually got to be the last leg. When I turned to breathe, I saw myself swim myself past the person, and the excitement that we had we won was so great. It was so fun. I loved that so much.
