2010 OUTLOOK After Alex Radsky ended Davidson’s 41-year individual championship drought at the Southern Conference Wrestling Championships last season, head coach Bob Patnesky hopes that not only will Radsky return to the NCAA Tournament, but that he will be joined by other Wildcats in Philadelphia. “If we stay healthy, it could be a nice season for the ‘Cats,” said Patnesky, who enters his seventh season as Davidson’s head coach. “We’re going to have some peaks and valleys, but we just need to focus on the things that are going to make us better each and every day. But in the end come March, when it is all on the line, we need to perform at our best, and hopefully we’ll have another conference champion and maybe one or two more going to the national tournament this year.”
125 With the graduation of four-year starter Ben Altman, sophomore Matt Zarth will be counted on to take his place in the starting lineup at 125 pounds. Zarth saw limited action during his freshman campaign, going 6-9 with two pins at 125 pounds, and drawing starts in a pair of SoCon matches against Chattanooga and Appalachian State. With one-year of collegiate experience under his belt, the Wildcats are looking forward to a solid second-year performance. “Matt Zarth is a very talented sophomore,” said Patnesky. “We expect great things from him. He just needs to turn the corner and focus on the things he needs to do to win at this level.”
133 Senior Alex Radsky will continue to lead the ‘Cats on and off the mat as he looks to defend his SoCon Championship at 133 pounds. The league’s coaches picked him to repeat, naming him to the preseason All-SoCon team, and national publications Wrestling USA Magazine and WrestlingReport.com are both predicting a return bid to the NCAA Tournament. Radsky has only sought to improve over the spring and summer, qualifying for the USA Wrestling World Team Trials and spending six weeks with his twin-brother Vitaly in Belarus studying the national wrestling team. “Alex Radsky is an extremely hard worker and sets his goals at the highest levels they can be,” said Patnesky. “He’s looking to repeat as the conference champion and get back to the NCAA Tournament and have a great performance there. He’s definitely one of the guys the team looks up to.”
141 In 2009-10, Vitaly Radsky led the ‘Cats in wins with 20, posted the team’s best conference record at 4-1 and scored the most dual points on the team with 57 – all career highs – but placed second in the SoCon Tournament after suffering an 8-3 defeat in the championship match. Radsky has dedicated himself to improving during the offseason, attempting to qualify for the USA Wrestling World Team
Trials during the spring and spending six weeks studying the Belarus national wrestling team with twin-brother Alex. Vitaly will need to be at his best in his final collegiate campaign, as the 141-pound weight class is among the most competitive in the SoCon. “Vitaly still feels the pain of making one mistake in the conference finals to a guy he had beaten before,” said Patnesky. “He works diligently everyday to become the best, and he is in a very competitive weight, so each and every match he wrestles must be close to perfection. I believe he has it in him to be a conference champion, go to the national tournament, and make a little noise.” Sophomore Scott Ray will look to compete for time on the mat in the 133-, 141-, and 149pound classes. After starting his rookie campaign with a 5-8 record, an injury cut his 200910 season short. “Scott is a hard worker and does the things that need to be done,” said Patnesky. “He has great technique and whatever weight he competes at, he is going to compete hard and give his all.”
149 While Ray could see time in the 149-pound class, freshman CT Talevi will also be counted on to step up during his rookie campaign. Talevi, who hails for Roanoke, Va., placed in the top five at the state championships during his junior and senior years at Cave Spring High School, where he broke the career (123) and single-season (44) records for wins. “CT is another hard worker,” said Patnesky. “It’s his freshman year, so we’ll have to see how things go, but each and every time he goes out there, he is going to give his best effort.”
157 The battle for the starting nod at 157 pounds will be competitive as the 2009-10 preseason All-SoCon pick at 149 pounds, David DeCamp, moves up to the class. DeCamp had one of the best starts on the team last season at 149, winning all eight matches against collegiate opponents at the UNC Pembroke Open to place third. But his season ended in November with an injury. DeCamp will battle sophomore Brent Mowry for the starting nod. Mowry went 6-9 during his rookie campaign before an injury ended his season prematurely. “Brent Mowry has really made a commitment to the sport of wrestling during the offseason,” said Patnesky. “He’s really worked hard to recover from his injury last season. He’s wrestling well and it is going to be a real challenge to see who the guy is, as we have David DeCamp moving up from 149. It’s going to be a real battle.”
165 Tyler Mullen could be another one of Davidson’s conference title contenders after earning the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament at 165 pounds in 2010. An injury kept Mullen off the mat until January last season,
2010 WRESTLING
but he gave the ‘Cats an immediate boost upon his return, winning seven-consecutive matches after dropping his first two. He finished the season with a career-best 10-7 record, including a 3-1 mark in conference bouts. His confidence has only risen entering the 2010-11 season. “Tyler Mullen is a very athletic guy with very explosive, fast-twitch muscle fibers,” said Patnesky. “It’s his junior year, and he’s gaining more and more confidence each year he goes along. He can beat anybody on any given day, so he could also have a great conference tournament.”
174 - 184 - 197 Junior Jorge Estrada, sophomore Chris Cirenza and freshman Scott Patrick will compete for the starting nod at 174 pounds. “Jorge Estrada has really made a commitment to the sport of wrestling this past year,” said Patnesky. “He’s really worked hard in the preseason, and we’ve seen significant gains in his wrestling style.” Cirenza only saw action in four matches during his rookie campaign, all coming at 165 pounds, before an injury cut his season short. Patrick, from Ellicott City, Md., was an MIAA conference champion and MIS state champion wrestling at the McDonogh School, breaking the school’s single-season wins record (52). He also placed third at the National Prep Wrestling Championships. “Chris is a hard worker who has also made a commitment to the sport,” said Patnesky. “Scott Patrick is a very talented kid. They’re all going to battle for the spot and we’ll see who is going to be the man.” Ike Crews will look to improve in his second season at 184 pounds. A tremendous competitor, Crews dedicated himself during the offseason to strength and conditioning. “Ike spent a ton of time in the weight room this past year and is much bigger than he was last year,” said Patnesky. “He is a student of the sport and he keeps learning each and every day. Ike is a competitor, and he’s going to fight for seven minutes every time he steps on that mat. The potential is there.”
285 Charlie Wolff continued to improve during his junior year, and the heavyweight is looking to put together a career year. He returned to campus after a summer of workouts at his lightest weight ever, and is looking to make a run in the conference tournament. “The thing about Charlie Wolff is that he wrestles with heart, and that can take you a long way in what you are doing,” said Patnesky. “Over the summer he made a lifestyle change and came in at 270 pounds, which he has never done before. In the early tournaments we can see a significant difference in his performance. He’s really turned a corner and really believes in himself. He wants to win.“

COACHING STAFF BOB PATNESKY 7th Year West Virginia, ‘01 Record: 35-68-1
Bob Patnesky is in his seventh season as Davidson College’s head wrestling coach and ranks third in all-time victories at the school. Patnesky returned Davidson to the NCAA Wrestling Championships for the first time since 1999 after guiding Alex Radsky to the Southern Conference Championship at 133 pounds in 2010. Radsky was the first Wildcat to claim the top spot on the conference podium in 41 years. Alex’s twin, Vitaly, finished as the SoCon runner-up at 141 pounds. Davidson has consistently been one of the top wrestling programs in the country for academics under Patnesky’s tutelage. The Wildcats have been ranked in the NWCA’s Division I All-Academic Top 30 the past five years, earning the fifth-best team grade point average in the past two seasons. In 2009, Alex Radsky earned a place on the NWCA AllAcademic team and Ben Altman was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA AllDistrict team. In the 2008-09 season, a pair of Wildcat wrestlers finished third at the Southern Conference Championships. David DeCamp and Tyler Mullen were both named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team following their impressive rookie campaigns, and the 'Cats boasted two SoCon Wrestler of the Week honorees, with Sam O'Hair and Vitaly Radsky both bringing home the award, making Davidson one of just four schools in the conference with multiple weekly award winners. Three Wildcats finished third or higher at the 2008 SoCon Championships with Ben Altman placing second at 125 pounds. Altman was named to the NWCA All-Academic team,
and Davidson finished 11th in the country in the team GPA rankings for the second straight season. It’s the third consecutive season the ‘Cats have been ranked in the top-25. Five Wildcats placed third at the Southern Conference Championships in 2007, and the team scored the second-most points in school history at the event. Altman was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year. In addition, Davidson topped Duke for the first time in 40 years and placed 11th in NWCA team GPA rankings. As the interim head coach in 2004-05, Patnesky led the Wildcats to an 8-7 overall record, their first winning campaign since Davidson recorded an identical mark in the 1983-84 season. He came to Davidson College as an assistant coach prior to the 2003-04 season after serving in the same capacity at Ohio University for two years while earning his master's degree in recreation and sport sciences. There he coached four-time AllAmerican Jake Percival. “It is truly an honor to work and coach at an institution like Davidson College,” said Patnesky. “The academic prestige is what really attracts student-athletes to the school.” A High School National finalist, Patnesky was a three-year starter at West Virginia, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 2001. The three-time NCAA qualifier is the all-time winningest wrestler in his weight class at West Virginia. Patnesky was the 2000 Eastern Wrestling League champion, helping his team win the EWL crown and a sixth-place finish in the
country. He was a three-time Jr. National AllAmerican, a national finalist, individually ranked among the top 12 wrestlers in the country for three years and finished his college career with more than 100 victories. He also competed for the U.S. on a tour of France and Poland in 1999 and earned NWCA Academic All-American accolades. Before serving as an assistant coach at Ohio University, Patnesky served as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater for a season. There, his primary duties included recruiting, coaching, scheduling and scouting opponents. Patnesky is single and lives in Charlotte with his dog, Bella.

2009-10 IN REVIEW Altman, DeCamp Lead Wildcats at UNC Pembroke Open Ben Altman (125 pounds) and David DeCamp (149) led Davidson with third-place finishes in their respective weight classes at the 29th annual Pembroke Classic on Saturday, Nov. 14 in the English E. Jones Center. With competition at 125 not starting until the second round, Altman drew a bye in the second round and won a 14-9 decision over Newberry’s Jonathan Cronin to advance to the quarterfinals. Altman just lost a 9-7 decision to Campbell’s Wes Heavner to fall to the Wrestleback bracket, but Altman rallied with a 13-0 major decision over Belmont Abbey’s Ryan Devita. In the Wrestleback quarterfinals, Altman earned his biggest win of the day, an 18-2 technical fall in 4 minutes, 59 seconds against Darton’s Luis Ponce. In the semi-finals, Altman earned an 8-2 decision over Campbell’s C.J. Gittens. The win placed Altman in contention for third-place, which he won in 1:26, pinning UNC Greensboro’s Eric Chandler. DeCamp’s day began by pinning Limestone’s Shaun Cadoret in 2:03 and UNC Greensboro’s Aaron Smith in 1:02, but he ran into trouble in the Championship third round, losing an 8-3 decision to Joe Mavins. DeCamp was undeterred, winning his next six matches. The preseason All-SoCon selection pinned UNC Pembroke’s Noel Mueller in 53 seconds, won a 7-0 decision over Newberry’s Nick Pare, and then won a 14-2 major decision over Newburry’s Davis Bagwell to advance to the Wrestleback quarterfinals. DeCamp took a pair of 4-0 decisions over Campbell’s Nick Rex and Virginia’s Dave Ebbot to advance to the third-place match, where he pinned Brandon Bradley of UNC Pembroke in 1:57.
Alex Radsky Wins Davidson Open Alex Radsky earned his first tournament title, winning at 133 pounds to lead Davidson in the Davidson Open on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Baker Sports Complex. Charlie Wolff (heavyweight) and Ben Altman (125) also placed in their respective classes. Radsky won all three of his matches, earning his first-round victory with a pin in 2:30. In the quarterfinals, Radsky earned a 6-1 decision over Jared Jones of No. 24 Virginia Tech and then battled for a 3-1 decision over Clint Spencer (Newberry-Unattached) in the championship match. Wolff ultimately placed second after getting pinned in the championship round by Dustin Porter, who was competing unattached from Gardner-Webb. Wolff went 3-1 on the day with one pin. He advanced out of the first round with a 3-1 decision, and was then able to outlast Josh Gibson (Newberry-unattached) in the quarterfinals. Wolff earned the victory with four seconds of riding time after the contest went the distance in double overtime. In the semifinal round, Wolff battled Matt Wade, also unattached from Newberry, and eventually pinned him after 6:49. Altman earned a major decision in his first match, but suffered a technical fall to eventual second-place finisher Michael Slaughter of

Mullen Extends Streak to Seven
Ben Altman’s stellar performance for Davidson at the Virginia Duals on Friday, Jan. 8 and continued success in the classroom earned the senior mathematics major Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Jan. 13. Altman currently led the Wildcats with a 14-8 overall record and 20 total points in dual matches. The Wilmington, Del. native sported a 3.867 cumulative grade point average entering his final semester at Davidson. Wrestling at 125 pounds at the Virginia Duals, Altman scored a pin in the match against Millersville and a technical fall against the Apprentice School.
Wolff, Altman Lead 'Cats Comeback Over Millersville An overtime decision for Charlie Wolff (285 pounds) and a pin by Ben Altman (125 pounds) erased a five-point deficit in the final two bouts to give the Davidson wrestling team a 27-23 win over Millersville on Friday, Jan. 22 in The Thunderdome. Tri-meet host and Southern Conference foe Virginia Military Institute defeated Davidson, 37-4 prior to the Millersville match. Millersville held a 23-18 lead over Davidson entering the final two bouts, but Wolff earned a 3-1 overtime decision over Chase Godfrey to bring the ‘Cats within two points. Since the match started at 133 pounds, Altman was left with the task of securing the victory in the 125pound class. Needing just a decision to tip the match in Davidson’s favor, Altman pinned Matt Devestine in one minute, 40 seconds for the final four-point margin. Vitaly Radsky wrestled at 149 pounds for just the second time in his collegiate career, and the first-time since his freshman year, but the 141-pounder was able to pull out a 3-2 decision over J.J. Lester to give the ‘Cats a 15-0 lead. Jarret Hostetter, who was previously nationally-ranked, pinned junior Joe McGinley at 157 pounds to put Millersville on the scoreboard, but sophomore Tyler Mullen responded with a 4-2 decision over Steve Hess to extend the ‘Cats’ lead to 12 points. Millersville erased the margin in the next two bouts, winning by forfeit at 174 pounds

Tyler Mullen Vitaly Radsky earned a thrilling sudden victory decision and Tyler Mullen (165 pounds) improved to 3-0 in Southern Conference action, but it was not enough as The Citadel prevailed over Davidson, 31-12 Thursday, Feb. 4 in Belk Arena. Mullen’s win via injury default pulled the ‘Cats within three with four bouts remaining, but Davidson spotted the Bulldogs six points with a forfeit at 174 pounds, and then The Citadel claimed the remaining bouts with two decisions and a major decision. Alex (133) and Vitaly (141) Radsky earned Davidson’s other two victories. Vitaly Radsky’s bout with Nick LaFevre was the closest of the night as it was decided in a one-minute sudden victory period. After a scoreless opening three-minute frame, LaFevre scored first with an escape, but Radsky took him down for a 2-1 lead. Radsky chose bottom for the final frame, but was unable to escape, allowing LaFevre to accrue 1:26 of riding time to even the match at two to send it to overtime. Starting at neutral, both wrestlers tumbled several times in a spirited bout before Radsky was able to secure the takedown and claim the match.
Wolff Comes Through In Clutch Twice For Wildcats Davidson found themselves down to both Anderson University and Belmont Abbey entering the final bouts of the respective matches, but heavyweight Charlie Wolff came through in both to give the Wildcats a 23-22 victory over Anderson and a 23-20 win over Belmont Abbey in non-conference wrestling action Friday, Feb. 12 in Belk Arena. Vitaly Radsky scored two pins at 141 pounds to lead the ‘Cats with 12 points scored. Alex Radsky (133) and Carl Sandercock (149) also won by falls. When Wolff stepped into the mat against Anderson, the ‘Cats were down 22-20, and then against Abbey, they were down 20-19. Wolff defeated Anderson’s Chase Duke, 6-4, in the second 30-second tiebreaker following the second sudden-victory overtime period to

Charlie Wolff tip the match in the Wildcats’ favor. Taking bottom to start the second period, Wolff scored a reversal and Duke scored an escape, so Duke chose bottom for the third period and evened the match with an escape. After a scoreless oneminute sudden victory period, the pair traded escapes in the tiebreaker frames and went through another scoreless sudden victory period. Duke took bottom for the first and escaped to take a 4-3 lead, but Wolff scored an escape and a takedown in the ensuing tiebreaker frame for the win. Wolff scored an 8-0 major decision over Abbey’s Kyle Spar. After a scoreless first, Wolff tallied an escape and takedown, then added another two points with a takedown in the third frame. Spar’s second and third stall warnings gave Wolff two additional points, and the riding time bonus secured the major decision. Davidson held a 17-0 lead over Anderson after senior Ben Altman opened the match with an 18-2 technical fall over Dequan Warner, and then the Radsky twins both earned pins. Alex pinned Cory Monteforte in 4:10, while Vitaly pinned Christopher Francis in 4:56. Anderson earned a decision at 149 and a major decision at 157 to pick up seven points before sophomore Tyler Mullen extended the Davidson lead with a 7-6 decision over Trevor Sanford. The Belmont Abbey match was closer throughout. An Alex Radsky (133) 8-4 decision, a pin by Vitaly Radsky in 2:32, and a pin by senior Carl Sandercock (149) in 3:21 gave the ‘Cats a 15-3 advantage, but Corey White cut into the margin with a pin for Abbey at 157 pounds, and then Jake Varilek earned a decision at 165 pounds to cut the lead to just three points. However, sophomore Jorge Estrada earned his first career dual win in convincing fashion, an 11-4 major decision at 174 pounds, to give the Wildcats a 19-12 edge. Abbey took the lead though with a technical fall at 184 pounds and a decision at 197 pounds, but Wolff’s major decision then gave the ‘Cats the 23-20 win.
Sandercock, Radskys Dominant Against Campbell, N.C. State Carl Sandercock extended his win-by-fall streak to three with a pair of pins as the Wildcats defeated Campbell, 23-21, but fell to N.C. State, 35-16, in non-conference wrestling action Tuesday, Feb. 16 night in the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center. Davidson extended its winning streak to three in taking its fifth-straight match over Campbell. The ‘Cats held a 10-point lead after Tyler Mullen scored a 10-2 major decision at
165 pounds, but saw the Camels take a 21-17 lead after dropping the 174-, 184- and 197pound bouts via two major decisions and a fall. Campbell was unable to field a heavyweight wrestler though, spotting Davidson six points and the win. In the second dual match, N.C. State (7-14) swept the final six matches to erase the Wildcats’ 16-3 advantage. The ‘Cats built the lead with back-to-back pins by junior Vitaly Radsky (141 pounds) and Sandercock (149). Both Radsky brothers went undefeated, extending their respective winning streaks and improving their career-best season records. Sandercock felled Campbell’s Billy Heemer in three minutes, 54 seconds and N.C. State’s Robert Mills in 3:16.
Vitaly Radsky Named SoCon Wrestler of the Week
Vitaly Radsky was named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week after going undefeated with three pins in four bouts during competition Feb. 10-16. Radsky was 4-0 last week, picking up three pins and a major decision for the Wildcats. He earned pins against Anderson, Belmont Abbey and North Carolina State as a well as a 13-3 major decision against Campbell that propelled Davidson to a 23-21 victory.
Alex Radsky Wins SoCon Championship at 133 Pounds
Alex Radsky became Davidson's first individual Southern Conference wrestling champion since 1969, earning a thrilling 3-2 decision at 133 pounds over top-seed Josh Statum of Chattanooga Saturday, Mar. 6 during the 73rd annual SoCon Wreslting Championship in Baker Sports Complex. Radsky became Davidson's first individual champion since Kerry Keith won at 191 pounds for the Wildcats 41 years ago. He is also Davidson's first representative at the NCAA Wrestling Championships since Ian Kaplan received an at-large bid in 1999. Those will take

place in Omaha, Neb., March 18-20. The first frame was scoreless, but Statum chose bottom and promptly escaped to start the second period. Statum was unable to extend his 1-0 lead and Radsky escaped just as easily from the bottom to start the third. Radsky soon took a shot and grabbed Statum’s left leg for the two-point takedown. Statum eventually escaped, but it was not enough as the two remained neutral until the end. His twin brother, Vitaly Radsky, reached the finals at 141 pounds but lost an 8-3 decision to UNC Greensboro's Ivan Lopouchanski, the bracket’s second seed. Vitaly had defeated No. 4 David Yost, 3-1 to reach the championship match.
Radsky Concludes Action at NCAA Wrestling Championships A third-period takedown proved to be too much to overcome, as Alex Radsky was defeated 4-1 by Sean Clair of Eastern Michigan in the first wrestleback round Saturday, Mar. 18 in Qwest Center. The loss eliminated Radsky from the double-elimination tournament. He finishes the season with a career-best 17-6 record, which ranks among the best all-time in Davidson history. The first frame was scoreless, but Clair (2114) took a 1-0 lead in the second with an escape after Radsky chose top. The two started from neutral and Clair was able catch Radsky with an early shot for a two-point takedown. Radsky was unable to get free until Clair let him up late. Radsky’s late attempts nearly brought him back in contention, but Clair was just able to free himself in the final seconds as Radsky nearly took him down. Clair was then awarded a bonus point for riding time. Radsky was placed in the wrestlebacks after Ian Paddock (Ohio State) pinned him in the opening round. It was the first loss by fall for Radsky this season.
Davidson Ranks Fifth Academically; Alex Radsky Named NWCA All-Academic The Davidson Wildcats posted the fifth-best team grade point average in Division I wrestling for the second consecutive season, while junior Alex Radsky was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic team, the organization announce. Davidson has been ranked in the NWCA’s DI All-Academic Top 30 the past five years. Radsky, who became Davidson’s first Southern Conference Champion in 41 years and competed at the NCAA Wrestling Championships for the first time in his career, is Davidson’s first individual selection to the NCWA All-Academic team since Ben Altman earned the honor in 2008. Radsky earned a 3.284 GPA while majoring in political science, and was named to the 2009-10 Southern Conference Winter Academic All-Conference team in April.

WILDCAT RECORD BOOK WRESTLING IN THE DAVIDSON ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME Charles W. Parker '38 Several areas in the Baker Sports Complex on the Davidson Campus are testimony to the impact Charlie Parker had on wrestling at Davidson College. The Charles W. Parker Wrestling Room and the Wildcats' dressing room were both given in his honor by former Davidson wrestlers. Except for a five-year break with the U.S. Army Air Corp in World War II, Parker spent four decades as the Wildcats' wrestling coach. One of the highlights of his career was in 1963 when he coached the U.S. wrestling team in the Pan-American games in Brazil. He served in several national amateur wrestling associations, including the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Committee (1959-1960) and the National AAU Committee. Parker edited the NCAA Wrestling Guide and was secretary-treasurer of the Carolina Wrestling Officials Association. He was a certified international wrestling official and a charter member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. Parker was inducted into Davidson’s Hall of Fame in 1991-92
Lowell L. Bryan '68 Inducted in the HOF Class of 1994-95, Bryan was a Southern Conference wrestling champion for Davidson in 1967. He also played football and baseball for the Wildcats. In 1991 he received the James P. Hendrix Award, which is presented to the Davidson football letterman who by use of the lessons learned on the playing field has gone on to achieve outstanding success in his chosen profession. Bryan is a partner with McKinsey and Co., a New York financial consulting firm which advises top managers of companies on strategy and the impact of economic and credit changes in their industry.
Harold A. Westervelt '59 Inducted in 1997-98, Harold A. Westervelt is the only wrestler in Davidson history to win three consecutive Southern Conference championships. In 1957 and 1958, he won the conference title at 157 pounds. In 1959, Westervelt moved up to the 177 pound class and won again. In 2006, he was named to the Southern Conference's 75th Anniversary team - the only Davidson wrestler selected for that honor. Westervelt was also a three year letterman in football for the Wildcats from 1956 through 1958, the last time Davidson posted three consecutive winning seasons.
Kerry Keith '69 Keith was a two-sport standout, as a fullback on the football team and a star on the wrestling squad. Twice he led the Wildcats in rushing, first with 719 yards on 155 carries (4.6 avg.) in 1967, then with 377 yards on 121 yards in 1968. He also scored nine touchdowns as a sophomore, tying the school record at the time. He finished his career with 1,378 yards rushing (14th all-time) on 353 attempts as well as 16 touchdowns, plus 19 receptions for 225 yards. On the mats, Keith advanced to the national tournament in 1968, earning Davidson’s first-ever points at the national meet with a first-round victory. He was the Southern Conference champion at 191 pounds as a senior, one of only six individuals ever to win a SoCon title.

ADMINISTRATION Tom Ross President
Jim Murphy Director of Athletics
Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, 54, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. An Atlanta native, Murphy played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. Davidson has claimed the Southern Conference Graduation Rate Award for the last nine years, sharing the honor with Wofford in 1999-2000. In addition, Davidson has won the SoCon's Barrett-Bonner Award, given to the school that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league’s academic honor roll, 16 times in the award's 18-year history. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10 million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. The construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, the new Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and practice facility and the football stadium expansion project, which included a state-of-the-art weight room, a new press box and additional permanent seating, all have come during Murphy's tenure. The 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, Murphy served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his 25-year-old son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Thomas W. Ross became Davidson’s 17th president Aug. 1, 2007, after three decades of leadership and public service in North Carolina. Ross graduated from Davidson in 1972. In the decade after, he graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law, he taught at the University’s School of Tom and Susan Ross. Government, joined a Greensboro law firm and served for one year in Washington, D.C., as chief of staff of a congressional office. In 1984, Governor Jim Hunt appointed Ross as Superior Court Judge, a position he held for 17 years. In his work adjudicating felony cases, Ross became familiar with a state justice system that suffered shortcomings from uneven sentencing and a burgeoning prison population. In 1990, the N.C. Chief Justice appointed him to chair a new Sentencing and Policy Advisory Committee. For two years the 23-member panel worked to create a structured sentencing system that was eventually accepted by the legislature and became a model for similar programs nationwide. For his efforts, Ross received the William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence from the National Center for State Courts. Chief Justice Rehnquist, now deceased, presented the award personally to Ross in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court. In 1999, North Carolina Chief Justice Burley Mitchell appointed Ross as director of the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts. After running the North Carolina Court System for nearly two years, Ross was invited by the trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to become the Foundation’s executive director. His seven years at the Foundation involved him in statewide issues and policy, advocating for legislative reform and creating coalitions of nonprofit agencies to increase their influence in public affairs. Since becoming president of Davidson College in 2007, Ross has overseen an ambitious strategic assessment process, initiated campus-wide discussions of diversity and inclusivity, and announced the name of The Davidson Trust, the college’s historic financial aid program that replaced loans with grants in all financial aid packages. He established 200809 as the Year of Sustainability, and led the college’s Celebration of Honor and Integrity in 2009-10. Ross married the former Susan Donaldson in 1972, and they have two children, Mary Kathryn Elkins ’01 and Thomas W. Ross, Jr. ’99.

THE HISTORY OF THE WILDCAT On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in the South. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6. According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 pounds less. Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensive attack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, delivering
a “bewildering array of forward passes.” Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved overwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wild men from North Carolina.” The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preachers.” — revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives

DAVIDSON WILDCATS
SOUTHERN CONFERENCE A majority of the sports at Davidson compete in the Southern Conference, one of the oldest conferences in the nation, which began its 89th season in 2009. The soccer, volleyball, cross country, track and field, basketball, tennis, wrestling, baseball and golf programs at Davidson all participate in the league. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907) and the Pac-10 (1915) conferences have been around longer than the SoCon (1921). The conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships, which produce participants for NCAA Championships. The Southern Conference was the first “super conference,” with charter membership including Alabama, Auburn and North Carolina. The SoCon gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball, has the oldest basketball tournament in the nation and was the college home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Stephen Curry, Jerry West and Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. Academic excellence has long been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. Eighteen Rhodes-Scholar winners have come out of the conference, including six from Davidson. Each year, the league distributes at least three graduate scholarships, two of which were won by Wildcat soccer players in 2004. The Southern Conference was born on Feb. 25, 1921, in Atlanta, Ga., when 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. The charter members were Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, N.C. State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee, and athletic competition began that fall. In 1922, seven schools — Florida, Louisiana State, Mississippi, South Carolina, the University of the South, Tulane and Vanderbilt — joined the ranks. Since then, conference membership has experienced a series of membership changes with 42 institutions being affiliated with the league. The league has undergone two major transitions during its history. The first occurred in December of 1932. The Southeastern Conference formed out of the 23-school Southern Conference when 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized to help reduce the extensive travel demands. In 1953, Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolina and Wake Forest withdrew from the
league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference, seeking to schedule a greater number of regular-season basketball games against local rivals. Today, the league continues to thrive and is home to Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008, Samford officially joined the league, bringing membership of the conference to 12. VMI is an associate member in the sport of wrestling. The SoCon currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports — football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf — and nine women’s sports — soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, tennis, golf and softball. The Southern Conference office is located in historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C.
