men’s season outlook
After finishing second at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships for the past two seasons, the Davidson Wildcat men’s swimming and diving team is hoping to finally break through for a title. Leading the charge for the Wildcats will be 2009 CCSA Male Freshman of the Year Curtis Chaney, who will be joined by fellow Davidson record-holders Patrick Whitman, Miller Williams and Geofffrey Peitz. In addition to the four record-holders, the Wildcat men’s roster boasts seven Davidson Top-10 performers, while the addition of six highly talented freshmen round out a team that could be title contenders in 2009-10.
distance freestyle The Wildcats will need to replace the school record-holder in both the 1000 and 1650 freestyles, Merritt Peele, in the distance freestyle events. Sophomore Brian Seo swam into seventh-place on the Davidson Top-10 performers list in both events (9:51.89, 1000 free; 16:23.96, 1650 free) and should continue to improve upon his freshman season times. After being named Male Freshman Swimmer of the Year at the 2009 CCSAs, Chaney will continue to lead the Wildcats in the mid-distance freestyle events. In his freshman season, Chaney won both the 200 and 500 freestyles in school-record times at the CCSAs, 1:37.72 and 4:26.89, respectively. Freshman Wills Cooper could also give the Wildcats another presence in the distance freestyles.
sprint freestyle Whitman is the school record-holder in the 50 free, winning the event with a time of 20.66 at the 2009 CCSAs. Classmate Bryan Droll finished second in the event with a time of 20.79, also placing him second on the Davidson Top-10 performers list in the event. The pair are also Davidson Top-10 performers in the 100 free, with Droll third with a time of 45.69 and Whitman seventh with a time of 46.50. Seniors Brad Carman and Miller Williams are also Davidson Top-10 performers who should contribute in the sprint freestyles and

to the relays. Whitman, Droll and Carman set a new school record in the 200 free relay a season ago, while Droll, Carman and Chaney contributed to the record-setting 400 free relay.
Burquist’s time of 52.77 (2009 CCSAs) ranks him seventh in the 100. The Wildcats also add freshman Marcus Carson, who could contribute in the backstroke events.

Williams set a school record with a runnerup time of 49.65 in the 100 fly and returns as the ‘Cats’ best option in the event for his final season. Sophomore Joe Burquist is second with a time of 50.72 from the CCSAs, and Carman is third with his time of 50.88 from the league championships. Sophomore Geoffrey Peitz made a splash for the Wildcats in his rookie campaign, setting a pair of school records, including the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.84 at the league championships. Peitz also ranks eighth on the Top10 performers in the 100 flys with a time of 51.80 from a dual meet against East Carolina. Williams is also a Top-10 performer in the 200 fly, ranking fourth with a time of 1:54.11, and sophomore David Kerman is 10th with a time of 1:56.05. Freshmen Cooper, Tim Keating, Chris Leonard and Drew Onken could also make an impact for the ‘Cats in the butterfly events.
Whitman is the lone returning Wildcat with a Top-10 performer time in the 100 breaststroke. Whitman’s time of 59.24 at the 2009 CCSAs ranks him eighth in the event. Likewise, Kerman returns as the lone Top10 performer in the 200 breaststroke, with a time of 2:10.51 from last season’s league championships placing him 10th in the event. Junior Ben Lucas is also a capable swimmer for the Wildcats in the breaststroke events. The Wildcats also expect freshman Onken to contribute immediately in the breaststroke events. A talented breaststroker, he has the ability to compete for conference titles.
individual medley Peitz rewrote the Davidson record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.88 at the CCSAs and could challenge his own best again. He is also a Davidson Top-10 performer, ranking eighth in the 400 IM behind a time of 4:10.14 at the 2009 CCSAs. Kerman became the runner-up on the Top-10 performers list with a time of 4:03.43 in the 400 IM at the 2009 league championships and returns for another shot at the record in 2009-10. Sophomore Brian Seo and Lucas are also Wildcat Top-10 performers in the 400 IM. Seo ranks fourth behind a time of 4:05.84 at the 2009 CCSAs, while Lucas is ninth with a time of 4:10.27 from the league championships. The versatile Onken should excell at the IM as well and should give the Wildcats another dominate performer in the event.
backstroke Davidson will have to replace school record-holder Scott Frantz in both backstroke events, but has the depth to do so. Peitz swam the second-best time in Davidson history in the 100 back (50.51) at the 2009 CCSAs and could challenge Frantz’s time of 50.21 this season. Peitz also is a Top-10 performer in the 200 back with a time of 1:52.94 from the 2009 Nike Invitational. Junior Tennant Brastow is a Wildcat Top10 performer in both backstroke events, ranked fifth in the 100 back and eighth in the 200 with a times of 52.00 and 1:53.81, respectively, from the 2009 CCSAs. Sophomores David Kerman and Joe Burquist are also Top-10 performers that should contribute again in the backstrokes in 2009-10. Kerman’s time of 1:52.04 (2009 CCSAs) lists him fourth in the 200 back, while

women’s season outlook
distance freestyle The Wildcats will face the challenge of replacing the school record-holder in the 1000 free and the 1650 free, Alanna Ream, in the distance freestyle events, but junior Jessica Delgehausen could have a breakout season. Entering her third season, Delgehausen sits third on the Davidson Top-10 performers list in the 1000 free with a time of 10:22.13 from a dual meet at Georgia Southern. She also is fourth on the Top-10 performers list in the 1650 free with a time of 17:21.19 from the 2009 Davidson Invitational. Senior Caitlin Sheetz swam a Davidson best in the 500 free with a time of 4:57.85 at the 2009 CCSAs and should once again pace the Wildcats in that distance. Sheetz is also second on the Davidson Top-10 performers list in both the 1000 free (10:21.65, 2009 CCSAs) and the 1650 free (17:09.41, 2009 CCSAs). Sophomore Meagan Madden also swam onto both Top-10 performer lists in her freshman season (sixth in 1000 free with a time of 10:34.58 and seventh in the 1650 free with a time of 17:44.41) and should improve on that experience in her second season.
sprint freestyle For a third straight season, the Wildcats are paced by Martin in the sprints. The school record-holder in the 50 (22.99), the 100 (49.67) and the 200 (1:50.15), Martin is also undefeat-

ed in the 50 and 100 freestyles at the conference championships. She is also a critical cog in the Wildcat relays, swimming leadoff on the record-holding 200 medley and 200 and 400 freestyle relays and anchoring the all-time best 400 medley relay. Classmate Castle is second on the Davidson Top-10 performers list in both events, with times of 23.58 in the 50 free and 51.25 in the 100 at the 2009 CCSAs. Sophomore Casey Van Tassell is also a consistent presence for the Wildcats in the sprint freestyles, swimming onto both Top-10 performer lists as a freshman. Her time of 24.09 from the 2009 CCSAs ranks her fourth in the 50 free, while her time of 51.96 in the 100 free at the meet ranks her equally. Junior Alexa Richardson, who ranks sixth on the Davidson Top-10 performers list in the 50 free (24.38, 2009 CCSAs), is another swimmer who could make an impact for Davidson.
butterfly Castle holds the school record in the 100 butterfly with a first-place time of 54.62 from the conference championships last season, improving on her third place finish at the 2008 CCSAs. This season, she should continue to pace the Wildcats in the sprint butterfly, while also acting as a major contributor to the Wildcat relays. She is a member of the school recordholding 200 medley and 400 medley, swimming the butterfly leg on both at the 2009 CCSAs, where she also swam on the Wildcats’ record-setting 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Sophomore Lauren Kamperman made an immediate splash for the Wildcats, swimming a new school record in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:06.84 at the 2009 CCSAs. She also swam onto the Top-10 performers list, in 10th with a time of 59.22 from the league championship. Freshman Kelsi Hobbs could also make an impact for the Wildcats in the butterfly events.
backstroke
The Wildcats are without a strong presence in the backstrokes this season and will instead rely on a bevy of competitors until a

contender emerges. Hobbs is prehaps best poised, as an individual champion and school record-holder in the 100 backstroke in New Hampshire. Martin, Castle and Delgehausen all have the versatilty to compete in the backstrokes, as does Madden and freshman Jean DeOrnellas. Martin (8th, 1:00.13) and Castle (10th, 1:00.38) both hold spots on the Top-10 perfomers list in the 100 back, and Madden is seventh (2:07.76) in the 200 back.
breaststroke Senior Caroline Curtiss is a Wildcat Top-10 performer in both the 100 (1:06.81) and 200 (2:26.09) on the strength of her performances at the 2009 CCSAs. Junior Hailey Szymczak, placing 10th on the Top-10 performers list with a time of 1:08.41 from last season’s league championships, will also factor into the breaststroke events for the ‘Cats, as will classmate Ineke Stegger, a Wildcat Top-10 performer in both events. Stegger ranks ninth in the 100 back with a time of 1:08.31 from a dual meet against Clemson last season and fourth in the 200 breast with a time of 2:25.23 from the 2008 CCSAs.

Davidson will be led in the individual medley by junior Anna Stringfield, the school record-holder in the 400 IM (4:25.88, 2009 CCSAs). She is also fourth on the Top-10 performers list in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.93 from last season’s league championships. Kamperman is second on the Top-10 performers list in both the 200 (2:06.62, 2009 CCSAs) and the 400 (4:26.51, 2009 CCSAs) IMs and should once again challenge the records.

Seniors Kelsey Chisholm and Linnea Buttermore are joined by sophomore Jessica Ardecky earn valuable points for the Wildcats in dual-meet competition. Buttermore finished third on the 1-meter board (228.65) and ninth on the 3-meter board (198.10) at the league championships a season ago, while Ardecky finished 11th in both events as a freshman.

The Davidson women are entering their third season as members of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association, hoping to extend their past success to the 2009-10 season. Both the Wildcat men and women are coming off runner-up finishes a season ago, but for the Davidson women, the goal is to repeat their championship performance from the inaugural 2007-08 season. With 14 upperclassmen steadily winning individual titles and rewriting records, led by standouts Lindsey Martin and Emily Castle and complemented by nine sophomores and freshmen, the Wildcats are poised for a return to greatness.

coaching staff John Young Head Coach Fourth Year Williams College ‘97
John Young became the head coach of the Wildcat swimming and diving program at the start of the 2006-07 season. After overseeing the team’s move to the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association to begin the 2007-08 season, Young led the women’s team to the inaugural championship and the Wildcat men to a runner-up finish. The teams continue to experience success in the new league, as both finished second at the 2009 CCSA Championships and took home several individual honors. Ben Lane was named Most Outstanding Male Diver after winning both the 1 and 3-meter events, and Curtis Chaney was named Most Outstanding Freshman Male Performer for being a threetime individual champion. During his tenure the Wildcats have set 13 new individual school records and all five relay records on the men’s side, and nine individual school records and all five women’s relay records. Young was named the 2007-08 CCSA Women’s Coach of the Year, after coaching 14 athletes to All-CCSA performances, including five individual event winners. In his first two seasons with the Wildcats, Young coached 10 All-CAA performers, as Davidson competed in the Colonial Athletic Association. Prior to joining the Davidson staff, Young spent three years as an assistant swimming coach at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, helping to guide the Lords and Ladies to four NCAA Division III team championships. “John has a keen understanding of a highly competitive academic and athletic environment,” Director of Athletics Jim Murphy said. “His background and experience make him a great fit for Davidson.” During his tenure at Kenyon, Young coached national champions in 23 individual and 20 relay events, including Division III record-setters in four individual and two relay events, and two Olympians. Young was also responsible for the team’s strength and power program as well as recruiting. A 1997 graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., Young collected four NCAA Division III national championships as a student-athlete and was named NECAC Division III Male Athlete of the Year as a senior.

The team captain and two-time Division III New England Conference Swimmer of the Year also earned All-America honors 16 times and Honorable Mention All-America recognition 10 times. Young’s impressive collegiate career also included seven NEC event records, eight Williams College records and 22 NEC titles. Before becoming a coach, Young worked as a consultant with a market research firm in Quincy, Mass., where he interacted with clients, managed the firm’s technology infrastructure, and hired and trained new analysts, giving him a skill set unique among many coaches. Young has also served as a coach at Total Performance Elite Training Camps in New York, Ohio and Wisconsin, as well as the Technique Swimming Camp at Harvard University. He is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association and the College Swim Coaches Association of America.

Aaron Hintz begins his second season as the Davidson Wildcats’ diving coach. With more than a decade of experience, Hintz has worked with athletes at every level from novice to nationals and NCAA Division I and has a wealth of knowledge and experience. “Aaron’s vision for Davidson Diving is perfectly consistent with my belief that Davidson can sustain a high-achieving swimming and diving program built around the excellence of outstanding athlete-scholars,” Young said. “Able to offer Davidson’s prestigious academics and the chance to dive in one of the country’s premier facilities, I trust that Aaron will recruit the country’s best and brightest divers. Even more importantly, I know he is a coach with whom those divers will improve when they arrive.” Prior to joining the Davidson staff, Hintz served as an assistant coach for 2007 East National Champions “Team Orlando” Diving in Orlando, Fla. His coaching career also includes stints as head diving coach at Western Illinois University, head coach for Noblesville Dive Club in Noblesville, Ind., assistant diving coach at Ball State University, assistant
coach for the Tualatin Hills Dive Club in Beaverton, Ore., diving coach at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and diving instructor for the Cedar Rapids Park and Recreation District. Along the way, Hintz has coached four Divers of the Year and various university record holders. He coached a diver to Division III NCAAs and two to the Division I NCAA Zones. At the Junior Olympic level, Hintz coached a World Team Trial qualifier and three divers in the Top-10 at national meets. In a five-year stint as a Junior Olympic coach, he qualified divers to a national level meet more than 20 times. Hintz received a B.A. in journalism from Western Illinois in 2005, a field in which he also has extensive experience. Among his accomplishments, he was awarded the Illinois Press Association’s Maurice Scott award for the best coverage of taxation and placed in the top three in three categories. Hintz also attended Field Medical Service School to become eligible to deploy with the Marines and attained the rank of Non-Commissioned Officer, HM3. He served as a medical corpsman with the U.S. Marines from 1988-1994.

Chris Brammer joins the Davidson family as an assistant coach, after three successful years at Indiana University. During his graduate work at Indiana, Brammer studied human performance under the direction of Dr. Joel Stager at the Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming. Based on the philosophy of the legendary Dr. James Counsilman, the Counsilman Center serves as a research center and resource for the swimming community. Brammer played a pivotal role in research projects that included an analysis of the progression of elite and masters swim performance across time, measurement and identification of swimming power, the development of training devices and protocols specific to swim performance, the relationship between selected anthropometric dimensions and flutter kick performance, and recovery aides following endurance exercise. He is currently finishing his Masters thesis titled “Cutaneous Input and Motorneuron Excitability.” He also served as an assistant coach for local high school and middle school swim teams, and as co-head coach at the Counsilman Center Swim Team (CCST). He earned his B.S. in Exercise Science from Truman State University, where he was a four-year varsity letter winner and three-time academic All-American. He competed at the NCAA Division II Championship three times, earning NCAA All-America honors twice and Honorable-Mention All-America honors five times as a butterfly specialist. He is a native of Omaha, Nebraska.
Kylie Gamelier joins the Davidson staff as an assistant coach for the 2009-10 season. Gamelier comes to Davidson after a successful career as a student-athlete at the University of Toledo. Her four years at Toledo were marked by dramatic improvement – both for the program and for Gamelier individually. In the summer of 2008, Gamelier made Toledo sports history by becoming the first swimmer to compete at the United States Olympic Trials. As a senior, she continued to transcend team history, becoming the first Toledo swimmer to compete at the NCAA Championships, where she took 31st place in both breaststroke events. For her accomplishments, Gamelier was recognized as a team captain, named First-Team All-MAC, awarded the University of Toledo Swimming and Diving MVP, and named the Toledo Athletic Department’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year. Her own career recently included participation in the 2009 Swimming World Championship Trials. Gamelier received her Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from the University of Toledo in 2009. She has interned with the Strength and Conditioning staff at the University of Pittsburgh, and as a coach at the Athletic Republic in Toledo, Ohio. She is a native of Cranberry Township, Penn.

men's and women's swimmers earn All-Academic status from CSCAA The Davidson Wildcats men’s and women’s swimming teams were two of the 125 teams to earn Academic All-America distinction from the College Swim Coaches Association of America for the 2007-08 academic year. Fresh off their inaugural 2008 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championship, the Wildcat women qualified with an impressive team GPA of 3.150. The Wildcat men, runners-up at for the CCSA championship on the men’s side, earned the honors with a team GPA of 3.070.

After helping the Davidson men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams to firstplace team finishes at the Davidson Invitational, Lindsey Martin was named CCSA Women’s Swimmer of the Week, while Buttermore and Lane swept the weekly diving awards for a third straight week. After setting a pair of school records and swimming on three record-setting relays to help the Wildcats to a third-place finish at the Nike Invitational this weekend, Ladner earned his scond nod, selected as the CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Week. 2008-09 season in review
The Davidson Wildcat men’s and women’s teams both finished in second place at the 2009 CCSA Championships, as competition concluded Saturday in Athens, Ga. The College of Charleston men and Florida Gulf Coast women won 2009 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championships. After winning both diving events, Ben Lane was named Outstanding Male Diver of the Year, while Curtis Chaney took home Outstanding Male Freshman Performer of the Year honors. Aaron Hintz was named comen’s Diving Coach of the Year. The Wildcats won 13 individual events and four relay events, including sweeping the 400 freestyle relays. The Wildcat men also won the 200 and 800 freestyle relays. Chaney won three events to lead the Wildcats, finishing first in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyles, and Lane won both the 1 and 3-meter diving events. Scott Frantz was also a double winner, sweeping the backstrokes, while Merritt Peele (1650 freestyle), Geoffrey Peitz (200 fly) and Patrick Whitman (50 free)
were individual title winners. Lindsey Martin led the Wildcat women, as a double champion in the 50 and 100 freestyles for a second straight season. Emily Castle was the Wildcats’ only other event winner (100 fly). Additionally, the Wildcats also had six swimmers set school records with their performances. Alanna Ream (1650 free), Lauren Kamperman (200 fly), Anna Stringfield (400 IM) and Caitlin Sheetz (500 free) each set Davidson standards for the Wildcat women, while Peitz (200 IM) took another record for the men. In the relays, the Wildcats set new school records in both the 200 and 400 medleys, while the Wildcat women swam Davidson bests in the 200 freestyle relay.

droll swims lifetime best among world’s best at charlotte ultraswim Bryan Droll finished second in the “C” Final, and 18th overall, in the 50-meter freestyle with a lifetime best time of 23.67 at the Charlotte UltraSwim Meet held at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Droll finished the event 2.3 seconds behind France’s Fred Bousquet, the World Record Holder. The time bested Droll’s previous career mark, set earlier in the day in the preliminary round, of 23.84 seconds.

honors & awards Megan Hollar, 2006 In the final meet of her illustrious Wildcat career, Megan Hollar won three individual titles — the 200 breast, 100 breast and 200 IM, at the 2006 CAAs to earn Swimmer of the Meet, and ultimately, CAA Female Swimmer of the Year honors. Hollar, who first won the 100 breast at the 2004 CAAs, is the only swimmer in the program’s history to win an individual title at the CAA conference championship meet, finishing her career with four wins. Along the way, she set a new school record in both the 200 breast, with an NCAA-B standard time of 2:17.80, and the 100 breast, with a time of 1:03.30 to also become the first Wildcat to hold a CAA meet record. She is also a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 free. Hollar was named the 2005-06 CAA Female Swimmer of the Year, the first Davidson swimmer ever to receive the honor.
Mary Shell Brosche, 1999 & 2000 Mary Shell Brosche’s performances at the Southern States Championships in 1999 and 2000 earned her back-toback top swimmer honors and helped the Wildcat women to consecutive team titles. Brosche won the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 back events in both years and remains the school record holder in both IMs. Extremely versatile, Brosche remains on two additional Wildcat Top-10 lists — the 100 back and the 100 fly.

Heather Sweeney’s rookie campaign culminated with an impressive showing at the 1995 Southern States Championships, as she claimed a pair of individual titles. Out-swimming the pack, Sweeney touched the wall first in both the 200 IM and 400 IM, setting a new meet record in the 400. She also raced to second in the 200 breast and helped the 800 freestyle relay team to a first-place finish. Sweeney left her mark on the program and remains a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 and 400 IMs.

After winning both diving events, freshman Ben Lane was named Most Outstanding Male Diver of the Year at the 2009 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships. Lane was the CCSA champion on the 3meter dive with a score of 293.70 and won his second individual title, finishing first on the 1meter dive with a score of 285.10. He also rewrote the dual-meet school record on the 3-meter with a score of 315.30 against Emory. The five-time CCSA Diver of the Week, capped off his impressive freshman campaign with an appearance at the NCAA Zone B Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.

After winnng three individual titles and swimming on three winning relays, Curtis Chaney was named the 2009 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Most Outstanding Male Freshman of the Year. Chaney won the 100 free (45.78) and set new school records while winning both the 200 (1:37.72) and 500 freestyles (4:26.89). He also swam on the school-record setting and winning 400 (3:01.85) and 800 freestyle (6:43.92) relays and on the runner-up schoolrecord setting 400 medley relay (3:23.38). He was named CCSA Male Swimmer of the Week for Jan. 19.

Ellie Trefzger received the Susan K. Roberts Award in 2007, given annually by Davidson College to a female athlete in recognition of outstanding dedication and contribution to the school’s intercollegiate athletics. Trefzger finished her four-year career on the Wildcat Top-10 performers list in the 200 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 1650 free, 100 fly and 200 fly.

As a freshman in 1995, Matthew Buck made a splash with three top individual finishes at his first Southern States Championships. Swimming to victories in the 200 IM, 100 breast and 200 breast, Buck led the Davidson men to their first-ever Southern States team crown. He was also part of the Wildcats’ winning 400 medley relay. A versatile and talented swimmer, Buck’s school record in the 100 breast is still intact, and he remains a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 breast and 200 IM.

Kendra Berner received the Honda Inspiration Award, given nationally to a student-athlete who by perseverance has overcome personal adversity or disability or has undergone extraordinary personal sacrifice to achieve success in women’s athletics. Though born with a congenital deformation of her right hand, Berner won four silver medals in the 2000 Paralympics and still remains on the Wildcat Top-10 performers in the 50 free.

Baker Sports Complex The Baker Sports Complex, completed in 1989, houses all of Davidson’s indoor athletic facilities, including the John M. Belk Arena, Knobloch Tennis Center and Cannon Natatorium, as well as the athletic department offices and team locker rooms and the athletic training room.
John M. Belk Arena Named in honor of John M. Belk ’43 — a former Wildcat team captain, Davidson College trustee for more than 15 years and former mayor of Charlotte, Belk Arena is the home of men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball.
Alumni Stadium Completed in 2004, the $2-million soccer facility includes a new playing surface with a first-class irrigation system, lighting for night games, grandstands, a press box and a new scoreboard. The home of the men’s and women’s soccer teams also boasts its own clubhouse.

The Wildcats’ head strength and conditioning coach, Craig Swieton, carries out the goal of Davidson’s strength and conditioning program — to increase the strength, power, speed, conditioning levels and flexibility of all student-athletes, helping reduce the risk of injury. Each team’s program, specifically designed by Swieton, aims to improve the sport energy utilization system and to increase the strength and power to the primary muscle groups used in that specific sport. In the fall of 2005, Davidson opened the Ernie Doe Weight Room, a state-of-the-art 5,000square-foot facility dedicated to the needs of the college’s 21 varsity athletic teams. The weight room includes 16 power racks and eight lifting platforms, as well as other cutting-edge lifting and conditioning equipment to train the whole body. Prior to his arrival at Davidson, Swieton served most recently as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Central Michigan, where he was a graduate assistant as well from 2003-05. During his career, he also helped coordinate the strength and conditioning program at Duquesne. Swieton started his career as an intern at Syracuse in the summer of 2003 working with the football team. The Frankfort, N.Y., native earned a bachelor’s degree in applied exercise science from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., in 2003. He was a member of both the football and track and field teams. Swieton is a member of both the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA). Additionally, he is a level one certified club coach through USA Weightlighting. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sport administration.

Academic Excellence Davidson students explore the liberal arts curriculum in depth and enjoy close faculty collaboration. With 1,800 students, the college is large enough for a diverse and invigorating intellectual engagement, but small enough to foster individual experience and opportunity. JIM MURPHy DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, 53, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. Murphy, an Atlanta native, played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10 million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. The last five years have seen the construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, the new Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and batting cages and the football stadium expansion project, which included a state-of-the-art weight room, a new press box and additional Murphy and Tripp Merritt make a presentation to Davidson all-time leading passer Ryan Alexander. permanent seating. Murphy, the 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his 24-year-old son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Thomas W. Ross became Davidson’s 17th president Aug. 1, 2007, after three decades of leadership and public service in North Carolina. Ross graduated from Davidson in 1972. In the decade after, he graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law, he taught at the University’s School of Tom and Susan Ross. Government, joined a Greensboro law firm and served for one year in Washington, D.C., as chief of staff of a congressional office. In 1984, Governor Jim Hunt appointed Ross as Superior Court Judge, a position he held for 17 years. In his work adjudicating felony cases, Ross became familiar with a state justice system that suffered shortcomings from uneven sentencing and a burgeoning prison population. In 1990, the N.C. Chief Justice appointed him to chair a new Sentencing and Policy Advisory Committee. For two years the 23-member panel worked to create a structured sentencing system that was eventually accepted by the legislature and became a model for similar programs nationwide. For his efforts, Ross received the William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence from the National Center for State Courts. Chief Justice Rehnquist, now deceased, presented the award personally to Ross in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court. In 1999, North Carolina Chief Justice Burley Mitchell appointed Ross as director of the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts. After running the North Carolina Court System for nearly two years, Ross was invited by the trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to become the Foundation’s executive director. His seven years at the Foundation involved him in statewide issues and policy, advocating for legislative reform and creating coalitions of nonprofit agencies to increase their influence in public affairs. Since becoming president of Davidson College in 2007, Ross has overseen an ambitious strategic assessment process, initiated campus-wide discussions of diversity and inclusivity, and announced the name of The Davidson Trust, the college’s historic financial aid program that replaced loans with grants in all financial aid packages. He established 200809 as the Year of Sustainability, and led the college’s Celebration of Honor and Integrity in 2009-10. Ross married the former Susan Donaldson in 1972, and they have two children, Mary Kathryn Elkins ’01 and Thomas W. Ross, Jr. ’99.

THE HISTORy OF THE WILDCAT On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in the South. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6. According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 pounds less. Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensive attack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.” Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in

the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved overwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wild men from North Carolina.” The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preachers.” — revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives
