DAVIDSON WILDCATS
2011 OUTLOOK Following a season highlighted by freshman Richard Fountain’s individual Southern Conference medalist win and trip to the NCAA Regionals, the Wildcats are hoping the entire team will be present at the NCAA Tournament this coming season. “All the guys on our team have high individual goals, and they want to get to the NCAA’s as a team,” said head coach Tim Straub, who will enter his 12th season at Davidson. “We are excited to be playing a tough schedule this season and measure ourselves against the best in the country.” Davidson returns four of their five starters from last season’s team that placed eighth at the Southern Conference Championship. Senior Jackson Taylor and junior John Skeadas III bring the most experience to the lineup, as the upperclassmen have been regulars in the lineup since their freshman years. Taylor will be looking to lower his stroke average to its sophomore level or better, while Skeadas will be looking to build on a solid sophomore campaign where he posted the team’s second lowest stroke average. “They both have a lot of experience, so we are looking for their leadership and consistency,” said Straub. “They know what to expect and have been around it.” Sophomores Richard Fountain and Sam Echikson will be looking to improve on stellar rookie campaigns, as the duo ranked sixth amongst all Division I golf teams according to Golfstat’s "Freshman Class Impact Ranking" last season. Fountain made the most notable impact as he became the first Davidson golfer since Rusty Boyd in 1973 to win individual medalist honors at the SoCon Tournament, thus earning the league’s automatic NCAA Regionals bid. Through two rounds at the NCAA Regional, Fountain was in contention to advance to the NCAA Finals on the extremely challenging Pete Dye River Course of Virginia

Tech. “Richard is one of the top players in the Southern Conference, and he is ready to compete at the national level, so we are really excited,” said Straub. Fountain certainly did not take the summer off, as he earned a Top-10 finish at the North Carolina Open and tied for second at the North Carolina Amateur Championship. He even fired his second career 59 at the Roaring Gap Club in the mountains in Roaring Gap, N.C. Echikson also had a strong summer playing in large tournaments such as the British Amateur. His stroke average ranked third on the team last season by a margin of one-hundredth, so he will once again be counted on for a strong, consistent season. Walker Allen, James Bramlett and Ben Murray also return from last year’s team, and will be expected to contribute for the ‘Cats. Two newcomers join the team in Ralph Blasey and Todd Eckstein. Eckstein, who hails from Durham, N.C. and attended Trinity School of Durham, was ranked sixth in the state of North Carolina by Carolinas Junior Golf, while Blasey, a Kensington, Md. native who attended The Landon School, was ranked seventh in the state of Maryland by Golfweek. “I think they are both going to contribute, so we have not only a good team, but a deep team this year,” said Straub. The ‘Cats will need to be at their best this season, as they are taking on one of their most challenging schedules ever. “We have four big tournaments this fall, starting at Vanderbilt,” said Straub. “We play at N.C. State the week after that, and then we play at Akron’s tournament, which are both new ones for us. Then we finish up the fall playing back at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, so we’re very excited to get everything started.” In the spring, Davidson will visit familiar courses at the Wexford Plantation
2011-12 MEN’S GOLF
Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C. and the Seahawk Intercollegiate in Wilmington, but will also make new stops at the Samford Intercollegiate and Wofford Invitational. In between those two, Davidson will co-host the Irish Creek Collegiate with Charlotte again at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C. The tough slate will prepare the ‘Cats for the Southern Conference Championship, which will be held at the Daniel Island Club in South Carolina. “Chattanooga is probably going to be one of the Top-30 teams in the country again this year, so we will have our hands full, but I think we can compete with all of them,” said Straub. “We’re excited.”

HEAD COACH TIM STRAUB 12th Year Wake Forest, ‘89
Tim Straub enters his 12th season as head coach of the Davidson golf team. Since his introduction as the new coach in April of 2000, Straub has produced successful seasons and has made his own unique mark on the Wildcat program. Under Straub’s guidance, freshman Richard Fountain became the first Wildcat golfer to claim individual medalist honors at the 2011 Southern Conference Championship in 38 years, winning by one stroke. Fountain competed in the NCAA Regionals and finished ahead of three top-100 ranked players after making a serious bid to qualify for the NCAA Championship. The SoCon win was Fountain’s second tournament victory of the year, as he won the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate in the fall. The freshman class of Fountain and Sam Echikson was strong throughout the 2011 season, ranking sixth amongst all Division I golf teams according to Golfstat’s "Freshman Class Impact Ranking." At the 2009 SoCon Golf Championships, Davidson had a pair of golfers receive honors from the conference, with senior Michael Saari being named to the All-SoCon Team, and Taylor earning All-Freshman Team honors. The 'Cats had their best team finish in three years at the conference tournament. Five years ago, Straub led the Wildcats to a third place finish in the 2005 SoCon Championships, which Davidson hosted at River Run Country Club. Leading the competition after 36 holes, Davidson ended the event with a score of 890 and its highest finish in the event since the 1973 season. For his team's accomplishment, Straub was honored as the Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in his five-year tenure. In 2003, Straub was also named SoCon Golf Coach of the Year after leading Davidson to its best finish (seventh) in the conference tournament since 1998. The 'Cats improved their efforts in 2009, moving to sixth place at the league tournament. The abilities of current Wildcat golfers and the talent level of the newcomers have continued to elevate in each year Straub has been at the helm. Straub brings an extensive list of accomplishments and experience in golf. As a teenager, Straub won the 1983 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and won the New York State Amateur Championship twice He was awarded the Arnold Palmer Golf Scholarship out of high school to attend Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem,
N.C., and to play on the nationally- ranked Demon Deacon squad. While at WFU, Straub and the talented squad received many accolades. He played on the 1986 NCAA National Championship team as well as the 1987 NCAA runner-up team. As a senior, Straub led the Demon Deacons to the ACC Championship title and was the ACC Individual Champion. In December of 1989, Straub earned his bachelor's degree in sociology and began the next milestone in his athletic career. He became a professional golfer and joined the Hooters Tour. His first two professional wins came at the Fayetteville Classic in 1995 and then again in 1998. Following this first tour experience decided to test his abilities against the best golfers in Asia, subsequently joining the PGA Asian Tour. He was successful in this next venture as he finished in the top 15 of the tour for two consecutive seasons. He placed second in the 1996 Philippines Open and third in the 1998 Hong Kong Open. During his time on the tour, Straub continued to compete in several American tournaments. He notched top15 finishes at both the Nike Hershey Open and the 1998 Nike Greensboro Open. In 1998, Straub returned to the United States on a permanent basis and competed in a variety of tournaments. One of his crowning achievements as a professional came when he qualified for the 1998 U.S. Open in San Francisco. More recently, he placed second in the 2000 Buy.com Upstate Classic on the strength of a second-round 63. Straub also finished seventh at the 2001 Panama Open and 15th at the 2001 Buy.com Dayton Open. In addition to being a full-time coach and running his own junior golf camp, Straub has continued to advance his personal game. In the summer of 2004, Straub won the 80th Coastal Federal Bank Carolinas Open at the Surf Golf and Beach Club in South Carolina, and in 2003 he shot an even-par 71 to share medalist honors at a U.S. Open qualifier to advance to the sectional qualifying round. In May of 2006, Straub came up one stroke short of another title at the 81st Coastal Federal Bank Carolinas Open at the Surf Golf & Beach Club. One month later, he continued his successful summer run, capturing his second CPGA major championship by winning the 2005 North Carolina Open held at River Landing Country Club in Wallace. In the summer of 2009, Straub added to his long list of playing accomplishments as
2011-12 MEN’S GOLF
he finished second in the 43rd Annual North Carolina Open. His final score of fourunder 209 (68-73-68) placed him in a tie for first among professional golfers. Along with his impressive showing at the North Carolina Open, Straub just missed his second U.S. Open as he advanced to the sectionalqualifier. Because of his professional and teaching experience, Straub has a wealth of knowledge to share with his Wildcat players. "I don't see any reason why we can't compete for the conference championship year after year," he said. Straub is married to Jennifer Straub, the head coach of the women's cross country and track & field teams at Davidson. The couple has a son, William, 13, and a daughter, Sydnee, 10.

ADMINISTRATION JIM MURPHY, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, 53, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. Murphy, an Atlanta native, played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10 million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. The last five years have seen the construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, the new Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and batting cages and the football stadium expansion project, which included a state-of-the-art weight room, a new press box and additional Murphy and Tripp Merritt make a presentation to Davidson all-time leading passer Ryan Alexander. permanent seating. Murphy, the 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his 24-year-old son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

CAROL QUILLEN, PRESIDENT Carol Quillen, who was previously the vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives at Rice University, became the 18th president of Davidson College on August 1, 2011. Quillen has had a long and distinguished career at Rice. She joined the faculty as an assistant professor of history in 1990, and she earned promotion to associate professor in 1996. From 2004 to 2008, she served as the first director of Rice's Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance, leading development of the center's new mission and shaping an agenda that helped distinguish the center from other organizations. From 2006 to 2010, Quillen served as Rice's vice provost for academic affairs, focusing particularly on developing initiatives that cross academic schools, faculty diversity and faculty development, and resource development. During this time, she worked with faculty to develop and secure funding for a new Center for Asian Studies and a new Institute for Urban Research. She co-chaired the president's diversity task force, and instituted mentoring programs for junior faculty. As vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives, Quillen was responsible for developing and implementing Rice's overall global strategy, which includes research partnerships, recruiting strategies, curricular revision and international opportunities for students. She also facilitates implementation of university-wide initiatives, including the Institute for Urban Research, Rice 360 (a global health effort), and collaborations with Baylor and other institutions within the Texas Medical Center. James W. Crownover, chair of Rice University's Board of Trustees, said, "It's an honor for Rice that one of ours has been chosen to lead a place as respected as Davidson. She will work hard, and she will succeed there." Quillen grew up in New Castle, Del., a small town where she says "it was second nature to support the community and look out for other people." A Presbyterian, she attended Quaker schools from prekindergarten through high school. She earned a B.A. degree in American history from the University of Chicago, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with special and general honors, then received a Ph.D. degree in European history from Princeton. A humanist whose academic interests include early modern European history, European intellectual history and gender studies, Quillen has written two books on Petrarch, as well as a number of scholarly articles, reviews and papers. She has received a number of teaching awards during her tenure at Rice. Quillen's daughter, Caitlin, will be a first-year student at the University of North Carolina next fall. Quillen's husband, Ken Kennedy-a computer pioneer who founded the computer science program at Rice—died of pancreatic cancer in 2007. "His greatest gift to me, and to the Rice community, was in living the life he would have chosen," Quillen said. "That's something I think about in a very profound way every day." At Davidson, Quillen succeeds Tom Ross '72, who announced in August 2010 that he would step down to become president of the University of North Carolina system in January 2011.

THE HISTORY OF THE WILDCAT On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in the South. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6. According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 pounds less. Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensive attack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.” Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in
the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved overwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wild men from North Carolina.” The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preachers.” — revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives
