2011 OUTLOOK Now in her 29th season at the helm, head coach Caroline Price will enter the 2011 campaign in solid position to help the program capture its first Southern Conference tournament title after finishing runner-up three times in the last six years. The Wildcats look to make it nine of the last 10 years with a winning mark after concluding the 2010 slate with a 15-8 mark overall and 7-3 in SoCon play. It was the ninth straight season the Wildcats reached double digits in wins. Of coach Price's 28 seasons, the Wildcats have finished at or above .500 in 23 of them. This year's club will feature the return of seven letterwinners from a season ago, including senior Samantha Galainena who went a team-best 16-5 in singles with an 8-2 league record. Of the seven returners, six of them saw action in both singles and doubles play. SINGLES After finishing with 72 singles wins in 2009, Davidson topped that by 11, going 83-52 in 2010. The ‘Cats had a very impressive 37-24 record vs. SoCon foes a year ago, with four players finishing with a winning mark in league matches. • Senior Samantha Galainena: Tallied a career-best 16 singles wins in third year, going 16-5 ... had an 8-2 mark vs. SoCon opponents ... went 10-4 (6-2 SoCon) at No. 6 singles ... rattled off a nine-match win streak to finish year ... also saw action at No. 4 and 5 singles, going 6-1. • Senior Alison Rauh: One of six Wildcats to hit the double-digit mark in singles wins with 11 ... played at No. 1 through 4 positions ... picked up six of those wins vs. league foes ... opened season winning four of first five matches. • Junior Katharine Dicconson: As sophomore, played in five matches ... had a 4-1 record ... won first career SoCon match, 6-0, 6-1 vs. Western Carolina at No. 6. • Junior Romina Clemente: A doubles specialist as a freshman, worked way into starting lineup for three matches ... scored first collegiate singles win over North Carolina A&T ... went on to pick up one more singles win ... played at No. 5 and 6 singles spots. • Junior Stephani Synn: Came back strong after missing all of freshman year ... went 15-3 overall in singles, including a team-best tying 8-1 vs. SoCon ... was a perfect 6-0 at No. 5 and 6 slots ... went 7-1 at No. 3 ... rattled off seven straight singles wins to start season and also had a five-match win streak afterwards ... had the second-best winning percentage in the league with 15-3 singles record ... had best winning percentage in SoCon at No. 3. • Sophomore Catherine Wood: Played in one singles match as a freshman last year ... scored a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 win vs. Case Western Reserve ... will add depth to the Wildcat lineup.
NEWCOmER The Wildcats welcome five freshmen for the 2011 season. • Freshman Frizzi Bschorer: Comes to Davidson from Germany ... reached a high ranking of 477th in the ITF Juniors ... closed the Fall season by tying for first in singles flight at Davidson Fall Classic II. • Freshman Nisha Crouser: Played No. 1 singles at The Wellington School in Columbus, Ohio during four-year prep career ... earned Ohio All-State honors in 2008 ... was a district champion in 2008 ... state qualifier, 2006 ... opened first collegiate Fall season by leading Davidson with 10 points at the Davidson Fall Classic. • Freshman Elise Held: A four-year section and district winner at Vincentian Academy in Butler, Pa. ... competed in three of the four Wildcat Fall events. • Freshman Tamara Hill: A conference player of the year at East Chapel Hill High ... earned 4-A All-State honors ... had a strong finish in singles at CofC Invitational by taking home the consolation bracket title for B2. • Freshman Brites Moniz-Soares: A native of Portugal ... had a nice first Fall season ... in final Fall event, Davidson Fall Classic II, tied for first in singles flight ... won the flight ‘G’ singles bracket with a 3-0 mark at the Virginia Tech Hokie Fall Invite. DOUBLES Davidson's doubles teams finished the 2010 season with a combined 31-37 mark and closed out at 16-14 in SoCon matches. • No. 1 position: The Wildcats will be looking to replace its No. 1 team after the graduation of Virginia Berry and Teresa Wang ... that duo went 12-9 overall and 63 vs. the league ... they won four of their first six matches ... Davidson was 12-11 overall at the No. 1 spot. • No. 2 position: The Wildcats No. 2 doubles team returns intact with Rauh and Synn ... the pair were second on the team with 11 doubles wins ... they had a team-best 7-3 mark vs. the SoCon ... the duo closed the season winning four of last six matches ... four other Wildcat teams were paired at the No. 2 spot ... overall, the ‘Cats had 12 wins going 12-11. • No. 3 position: Half of the No. 3 team returns as Galainena will be looking
for a new partner ... Galainena teamed with recently graduated Ali Gores for five doubles wins ... Galainena also teamed with Dicconson at the No. 3 spot for a 2-4 record ... the ‘Cats finished just 7-16 at the No. 3 spot (3-7 vs. SoCon). THE SCHEDULE Davidson will open the season with seven straight home matches, starting on Jan. 16 against nationally ranked Winthrop, which is No. 65 in the latest women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association top-75 poll. Also visiting the Covington Tennis Courts will be GardnerWebb, North Carolina A&T, Radford, UNC Asheville and East Carolina along with Liberty. The ‘Cats went 3-1 against four of those teams a year ago. They have yet to drop a match against UNC Asheville, holding a 6-0 record in the alltime series. Besides those four non-conference teams, the Wildcats’ non-conference schedule will also include USC-Upstate and cross-county rival Charlotte, which they defeated 4-3 a year ago. Davidson will also make a trip to the Notheast for matches vs. Brown and Boston, Feb. 12 and 13. The Wildcats will open SoCon play at home against Georgia Southern, Mar. 12. They defeated the Eagles, 6-1, last season and are 18-5 all-time in the series. Half of the Wildcats league matches will be at home. From Apr. 5-10, Davidson will be on the road for its longest stretch of the season. Davidson has finished with at least seven wins against SoCon-foes in seven of the last eight years. The SoCon Tournament takes place April 20-23 in Chattanooga, Tenn. This year’s tournament returns to the eightteam format. Davidson and the rest of the field will be looking once again to knock off Furman, which has taken 10 of the past 13 tournament titles. College of Charleston, ranked No. 69 to start the year, captured last season’s tournament title for the second year in a row. The Wildcats have reached the finals three times in the past six season, but have yet to bring home the tournament title.

HEAD COACH CAROLINE PRICE Head Coach 29th Year at Davidson Furman ‘72 Record at Davidson: 376-238 Caroline Price enters her 29th season in 2011 as the head women's tennis coach. She began her exemplary tenure at Davidson in 1983 and has since guided the Wildcats to one national championship and 22 winning seasons, including seven straight years, before Davidson went 12-12 in 2008-09. The women's tennis program is one of two female programs at Davidson to make a national tournament appearance, and among active Davidson coaches, Price has the highest overall winning percentage (.612) of any women's team. Entering the 2010-2011 women's tennis season, Price has an overall record of 376-238 and is 99-54 in Southern Conference duals. The 2010 campaign saw Davidson finish in the top-four of the SoCon standings with a 7-3 mark, while Price guided the 'Cats to a 15-8 overall record. The 'Cats advanced to the SoCon Tournament, as only the top-four teams made it, before seeing their season come to an end with a defeat to eventual champion College of Charleston. The 15 wins made it the sixth time in the last seven years the Wildcats have tallied at least that many wins in a year and marked the ninth straight season they have had a winning record in league matches. After opening the season 4-7, Price guided the Wildcats to an 8-5 mark down the stretch, including a 4-1 win in the 'Cats SoCon Tournament opener against Georgia Southern, to finish the 2009 campaign at 12-12 and 6-4 in league play. The winning mark in SoCon matches was the eighth straight season the Wildcats have sported a winning record against their SoConfoes. Davidson also again had a winning record at home, sporting an 8-4 mark. For the third time in four years, Price led the Wildcats to the finals of the SoCon Tennis Championships as Davidson concluded with a 19-6 overall mark (7-2 in SoCon) in 2008. The 19 wins marked the fifth straight season the Wildcats had taken home at least 15 wins or more in a single season. Of the 19 wins, 10 of them came on the Wildcats' home court as they won their first 10 straight home matches, before falling to close out the regular season. The 2007 campaign saw Price guide the Wildcats to an 18-7 overall mark and appearance in the 2007 SoCon Women’s Tennis Championship Semifinals before falling to College of Charleston. Price garnered her third and most recent SoCon Coach of the Year honors during 2001-02 season when her team posted 18 victories. The 2002-03 team followed with a 13-6 season and an appearance in the Southern Conference championship match for the first time since the format of the tournament changed in 1998. And last year, although their hopes for a championship were dashed by College of Charleston in the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament, the Wildcats posted eight regular-season conference wins, the most ever in school history. In Price's second year at Davidson, she led the team to the 1984 NCAA Division III National Championship, the only national championship ever earned by a Davidson athletic team. In 1985, the Wildcats returned to the NCAA Tournament but lost in the finals to the University of San Diego. That year, the 'Cats set a new school record for wins in a season with 21. Coach Price was faced with a new challenge in 1987 as Davidson began competing at the Division I level without the

advantage of scholarships. Despite the lack of funds and the marked increase in competition, Price's teams still managed to garner more wins than losses. It was not until the 1990-91 season, the first time Davidson College offered scholarships to women, that Price was able to offer scholarships to her players. In 1993, Davidson started competing as a member of the SoCon after a successful two-year stint (including one league championship) as a member of the Big South Conference. Moving up yet another level in competition, the Wildcats responded to the newest challenge by finishing the season 12-5 for a second-place finish in the league. Since their introduction to the SoCon more than a decade ago, Price's teams have found great success. Thanks to the 'Cats' impressive 6-1 record in conference play in 1994, Price earned Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors. She was recognized again in 1996 after leading the Wildcat squad to a 5-2 league record. A 1972 graduate of Furman, Price earned a bachelor of arts degree in physical education. Before her arrival at Davidson, she served as East Carolina's Director of Men's and Women's Tennis.

A native of Davidson, Plott returns to familiar grounds as an assistant coach for the women's tennis as he enters his first season. Plott began his coaching career at Davidson as the men's and women's assistant coach for three years before becoming the fulltime mens' assistant for another eight years. His tenure with the wildcats saw the women's team win the Big South Confrence Tournament, the men's team capture a Southern Conference regular season crown, and Davidson Hallof Fame inductee, Jon Pastel, garner a national ranking and compete in the NCAA National Championships. Plott has also worked at Davidson as assistant to the president and with the company/college Gifts-in-Kind Clearinghouse. Beyond Davidson, Plott has lived in Namibia and has had a near 20-year involvement with The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Connecticut. He is a graduate of Centre College with a B.A. in religion.
Head athletic trainer Beth Hayford, a 1993 graduate of Wingate, oversees Davidson’s five other full-time, fully-certified licensed athletic trainers as well student athletic trainers from UNC Charlotte, who cover the school’s 21 intercollegiate sports. Hayford came to Davidson as an intern in August of 1994 and was promoted to assistant athletic trainer in 1996, working with the football, lacrosse, soccer and volleyball teams. In 2002, Hayford was named the head athletic trainer. In addition to her responsibilities overseeing all medical aspects of the athletic program, she supervises the strength and conditioning department and the equipment room. Hayford works with the football and the women's tennis teams. Beth and her husband, Brett, who is the associate head coach of the Davidson football team, live in Huntersville with their son Thad.

WILDCAT HALL OF FAMERS Women’s Tennis Hall of Famers Emily J. Knobloch, Class of 1992-93 Emmy Knobloch ‘82 was one of Davidson's greatest tennis players ever and Davidson's first female All-American in any sport. She was named first team Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women All-American in 1982 when she finished fourth nationally. She had a four-year record of 86-19 for the Wildcats and led them to AIAW Division II state championships in 1979, 1981 and 1982. She was recipient of the Rebecca Stimson Award as Davidson's most outstanding athlete in 1982. She was captain of the 1982 women's tennis team. Emmy was an economics major from Atlanta and was named to Who's Who Among American College Students.
Rebecca E. Stimson, Class of 1995-96 Stimson ‘77 compiled an impressive record in the early years of women's athletics at Davidson. Stimson lettered four years in tennis and was named the team's most valuable player in 1977. In addition she earned three letters in basketball and played one season in field hockey. In 1977 she received Davidson's first ever award as the Wildcats most valuable Female athlete. That award is now named in her honor. After graduating from Davidson in 1977 Stimson received her Ph.D. in Chemistry at Northwestern University. Since 1981 she has been at Dupont and is presently Business Manager and Engineering Polymers.
Dana Casner Sterling, Class of 2009-10 Casner Sterling ‘99 left her mark on the Wildcat women's tennis team during her career, starting with the program's first Southern Conference Freshman of the Year honor in 1996. A four-year letter winner and Davidson's No. 1 singles player all four years, Casner Sterling earned first-team all-conference honors all four seasons. She recorded a 46-33 singles mark and tallied another 32 wins in doubles play at the No. 1 position. Casner Sterling led the Wildcats to winning records in three of her four seasons, with the ‘Cats hitting the 12-win mark twice. In addition, Davidson also posted winning conference records in all four seasons and in 1998, advanced to the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament.

Kelly and Meghan Fillnow were one of the best tandems during their time at Davidson. The duo teamed up in doubles play to earn either first- or second-team honors all four years. They were just as good in singles action, as Kelly was named to the first-team all-league in singles twice as well as twice making the second team, while Meghan earned a spot on the All-SoCon Second Team in 2005.
ATHLETIC DIRECTOR/PRESIDENT JIm mURPHY, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, 53, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. Murphy, an Atlanta native, played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10 million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. The last five years have seen the construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, the new Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and batting cages and the football stadium expansion project, which included a Murphy and Tripp Merritt make a presentation to state-of-the-art weight room, a Davidson all-time leading passer Ryan Alexander. new press box and additional permanent seating. Murphy, the 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his 24-year-old son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.
PRESIDENT TOm ROSS Thomas W. Ross became Davidson’s 17th president Aug. 1, 2007, after three decades of leadership and public service in North Carolina. Ross graduated from Davidson in 1972. In the decade after, he graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law, he taught at the University’s School of Tom and Susan Ross. Government, joined a Greensboro law firm and served for one year in Washington, D.C., as chief of staff of a congressional office. In 1984, Governor Jim Hunt appointed Ross as Superior Court Judge, a position he held for 17 years. In his work adjudicating felony cases, Ross became familiar with a state justice system that suffered shortcomings from uneven sentencing and a burgeoning prison population. In 1990, the N.C. Chief Justice appointed him to chair a new Sentencing and Policy Advisory Committee. For two years the 23-member panel worked to create a structured sentencing system that was eventually accepted by the legislature and became a model for similar programs nationwide. For his efforts, Ross received the William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence from the National Center for State Courts. Chief Justice Rehnquist, now deceased, presented the award personally to Ross in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court. In 1999, North Carolina Chief Justice Burley Mitchell appointed Ross as director of the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts. After running the North Carolina Court System for nearly two years, Ross was invited by the trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to become the Foundation’s executive director. His seven years at the Foundation involved him in statewide issues and policy, advocating for legislative reform and creating coalitions of nonprofit agencies to increase their influence in public affairs. Since becoming president of Davidson College in 2007, Ross has overseen an ambitious strategic assessment process, initiated campus-wide discussions of diversity and inclusivity, and announced the name of The Davidson Trust, the college’s historic financial aid program that replaced loans with grants in all financial aid packages. He established 200809 as the Year of Sustainability, and led the college’s Celebration of Honor and Integrity in 2009-10. Ross married the former Susan Donaldson in 1972, and they have two children, Mary Kathryn Elkins ’01 and Thomas W. Ross, Jr. ’99.

THE HISTORY OF THE WILDCAT On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in the South. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6. According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 pounds less. Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensive attack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.” Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in

the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved overwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wild men from North Carolina.” The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preachers.” — revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives

Sports Information Gavin McFarlin is entering his sixth year in Davidson’s sports information office. He serves as the primary contact for women’s tennis, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, women's soccer and lacrosse. Prior to coming to Davidson, McFarlin spent two years at University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., working in the media relations office as a graduate assistant. While at Pacific, he received his master’s degree in mass communication in May of 2005. McFarlin has also worked in the Ashland University and North Florida SID offices during his time in the sports information field. A native of Ashland, Ohio, McFarlin attended Ashland University in his hometown, graduating with a degree in sports communication and a minor in electronic media production, radio/television in May of 2002.
