2012-13 OUTLOOK The Wildcats are not as young as they were last season when freshmen outnumbered the other three classes combined, but with eight sophomores and five freshmen on the roster, the ‘Cats remain a youthful team. The squad will look to continue to improve in the 2012-13 season, led by junior 184-pounder Scott Patrick, who earned SoCon All-Freshman honors in 2011 and started the 2011-12 season with a 12-3 record before an injury cut his season short.
freshman was a two-time state qualifier at Lake Norman H.S. Sophomore Dan Hagemann also returns at 149.
125 pounds Senior Matt Zarth will look to hold on to his starting spot with sophomore Philip Elias challenging him for time on the mat. Zarth is 33-46 in three seasons, starting the past two. Elias is anxious to return to action after suffering a season-ending injury during his first career match last season. Freshman Scott Cunningham will also look to compete with Zarth and Elias.
133 pounds Sophomore Anthony Elias earned a place on the SoCon All-Freshman team last season after going 11-15 overall with a team-best 3-5 record in SoCon matches. The ‘Cats will count on Elias to tip dual matches in their favor, and he is poised to compete for a Southern Conference title.
184 pounds Junior Scott Patrick could be Davidson’s strongest candidate to win a Southern Conference title and the accompanying bid to the NCAA Tournament. Patrick’s torrid start last season was cut short by an injury, but he returns more determined than ever. His importance to the team is not limited to his success on the mat, as his leadership and work ethic are crucial in the development of Davidson’s young squad.
Kevin Birmingham
157 pounds The ‘Cats have two strong options at 157 in junior CT Talevi and freshman Nathanial Powers. Talevi went 5-13 last year in his first season of competition after injuries kept him off the mat as a rookie. Powers comes from a strong wrestling program at Central Mountain H.S. in Mill Hall, Pa., where he was also a class valedictorian.
165 pounds Senior Chris Cirenza will have big shoes to fill with the departure of Tyler Mullen, who scored a team-best 14 victories for Davidson during his senior season last year. Cirenza went 3-6 at 165 pounds last year, and his work ethic and veteran leadership make him a crucial part of the team.
Scott Patrick
197 pounds Freshman Carson Stack will step into the starting lineup at 197. Stack went undefeated as a senior at Haddonfield Memorial H.S. until suffering his first defeat in the talent-rich New Jersey state tournament, ultimately placing fourth. Freshman Alexander Renzi will compete with Stack for time as well.
Heavyweight Sophomores Ed Isola and Jordan Ownbey will compete for time at heavyweight. Isola went 7-20 last year at 197 pounds, but is moving up to heavyweight this season. Ownbey went 1-2 in limited action as a rookie.
Anthony Elias
141 pounds Sophomore Sejiro Littleton did not see any action as a freshman last season, but will be counted on at 141. He is one of three North Carolina natives on the team, hailing from Spruce Pine where he was the class valedictorian at Mitchell H.S. On the mat, Littleton was a three-time Western Highlands Conference Champion and a North Carolina state qualifier.
149 pounds Sophomore Kevin Birmingham went 10-10 at 149 pounds and 4-5 at 141 pounds last season, and was tied for the team lead with six pins. He will remain at 149 pounds this season and will look to become a force in the Southern Conference. Local product Patrick Devlin will look to challenge Birmingham for time on the mat. The
Chris Cirenza
174 pounds Sophomore Ian Solcz will look to improve on his 5-12 performance from his rookie campaign. Solcz was 4-3 in non-conference dual meets though, so he will look to translate that success into SoCon victories this season.

HEAD COACH BOB PATNESKY 9th Year West Virginia, ‘01 Record: 43-85-1
Bob Patnesky is in his ninth season as Davidson College’s head wrestling coach and ranks third in all-time victories at the school. The 2011-12 season was highlighted by Anthony Elias' selection to the SoCon AllFreshman team, and Wildcat wrestlers continued to see success at the Southern Conference Championships in 2011, as twin-brothers Alex and Vitaly Radsky both earned places on the podium in their respective classes. In 2010, Patnesky returned Davidson to the NCAA Wrestling Championships for the first time since 1999 after guiding Alex Radsky to the Southern Conference Championship at 133 pounds. Radsky was the first Wildcat to claim the top spot on the conference podium in 41 years. Vitaly, finished as the SoCon runner-up at 141 pounds. Davidson has consistently been one of the top wrestling programs in the country for academics under Patnesky’s tutelage. The Wildcats were ranked in the NWCA’s Division I All-Academic Top 30 for five consecutive years (2006-10), earning the fifth-best team grade point average in 2009 and 2010, and also ranking 12th best in 2012. In 2010, Alex Radsky earned a place on the NWCA AllAcademic team and Ben Altman was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA AllDistrict team. In the 2008-09 season, a pair of Wildcat wrestlers finished third at the Southern Conference Championships. David DeCamp and Tyler Mullen were both named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team following their impressive rookie campaigns, and the 'Cats boasted two SoCon Wrestler of the Week honorees, with Sam O'Hair and Vitaly Radsky both bringing home the award, making
Davidson one of just four schools in the conference with multiple weekly award winners. Three Wildcats finished third or higher at the 2008 SoCon Championships with Ben Altman placing second at 125 pounds. Altman was named to the NWCA All-Academic team, and Davidson finished 11th in the country in the team GPA rankings for the second straight season. It’s the third consecutive season the ‘Cats have been ranked in the top-25. Five Wildcats placed third at the Southern Conference Championships in 2007, and the team scored the second-most points in school history at the event. Altman was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year. In addition, Davidson topped Duke for the first time in 40 years and placed 11th in NWCA team GPA rankings. As the interim head coach in 2004-05, Patnesky led the Wildcats to an 8-7 overall record, their first winning campaign since Davidson recorded an identical mark in the 1983-84 season. He came to Davidson College as an assistant coach prior to the 2003-04 season after serving in the same capacity at Ohio University for two years while earning his master's degree in recreation and sport sciences. There he coached four-time AllAmerican Jake Percival. “It is truly an honor to work and coach at an institution like Davidson College,” said Patnesky. “The academic prestige is what really attracts student-athletes to the school.” A High School National finalist, Patnesky was a three-year starter at West Virginia, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 2001. The three-time NCAA qualifier is the all-time winningest wrestler in his weight class at West
Virginia. Patnesky was the 2000 Eastern Wrestling League champion, helping his team win the EWL crown and a sixth-place finish in the country. He was a three-time Jr. National All-American, a national finalist, individually ranked among the top 12 wrestlers in the country for three years and finished his college career with more than 100 victories. He also competed for the U.S. on a tour of France and Poland in 1999 and earned NWCA Academic All-American accolades. Before serving as an assistant coach at Ohio University, Patnesky served as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater for a season. There, his primary duties included recruiting, coaching, scheduling and scouting opponents. Patnesky is single and lives in Charlotte with his dog, Bella.

Erik Wince rejoins the Davidson wrestling program as an assistant coach beginning with the 2012-13 season. Wince previously served as an assistant on Patnesky’s staff for nearly three seasons after joining the Wildcats during the 2005-06 season. Working primarily with the upper weights, Wince coached five Southern Conference place winners and a two-time SoCon finalist. “I want to first thank Jim Murphy, Scott Applegate, and Bobby Patnesky for giving me the opportunity to return to coaching at the Division I level and Davidson College,” said Wince. “This is a great institution rich in tradition both academically and athletically, and it is an honor to be a part of it all again after a five year hiatus. I look forward to working alongside Coach Patnesky as we continue to build the Wildcat wrestling program into what we both believe it can be. I greatly enjoy working with student-athletes of this caliber and I hope that I can have a major impact on these wrestlers as they work toward their goals in the classroom and on the wrestling mat.” Since 2007, Wince has been the head coach wrestling coach and head strength and conditioning coach at Forsyth Country Day School in Lewisville, N.C. He was an accomplished wrestler at Gardner-Webb, qualifying for the NCAA Championships in 2003. “Erik is going to bring a great wealth of knowledge to the program,” said Patnesky. “He was my first assistant here when I took over the head coaching position, and I feel very comfortable with him coming back. Over the past three seasons, his wrestlers reached the state finals 19 times. Wince also coached a three-time Prep National All-American and a two-time Prep National All-American. “Erik has been successful head coach at the national prep level and he has great connections for recruiting,” said Patnesky. “We recruit within the national prep level quite a bit, so those connections will help us out tremendously.” Wince was elected as the USA Wrestling State Chairman for North Carolina for the 2011-12 term and was previously elected to the National Prep Wrestling Advisory Board for the 2010-12 term. Wince also has national team head coaching experience, serving as the Junior National Duals coach in 2006, the Cadet Nationals coach in 2007, and as the Junior Nationals coach from 2008-10. HALL OF FAME WRESTLING IN THE DAVIDSON ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME Charles W. Parker '38 Several areas in the Baker Sports Complex on the Davidson Campus are testimony to the impact Charlie Parker had on wrestling at Davidson College. The Charles W. Parker Wrestling Room and the Wildcats' dressing room were both given in his honor by former Davidson wrestlers. Except for a five-year break with the U.S. Army Air Corp in World War II, Parker spent four decades as the Wildcats' wrestling coach. One of the highlights of his career was in 1963 when he coached the U.S. wrestling team in the Pan-American games in Brazil. He served in several national amateur wrestling associations, including the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Committee (1959-1960) and the National AAU Committee. Parker edited the NCAA Wrestling Guide and was secretary-treasurer of the Carolina Wrestling Officials Association. He was a certified international wrestling official and a charter member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. Parker was inducted into Davidson’s Hall of Fame in 1991-92
Lowell L. Bryan '68 Inducted in the HOF Class of 1994-95, Bryan was a Southern Conference wrestling champion for Davidson in 1967. He also played football and baseball for the Wildcats. In 1991 he received the James P. Hendrix Award, which is presented to the Davidson football letterman who by use of the lessons learned on the playing field has gone on to achieve outstanding success in his chosen profession. Bryan is a partner with McKinsey and Co., a New York financial consulting firm which advises top managers of companies on strategy and the impact of economic and credit changes in their industry.
Harold A. Westervelt '59 Inducted in 1997-98, Harold A. Westervelt is the only wrestler in Davidson history to win three consecutive Southern Conference championships. In 1957 and 1958, he won the conference title at 157 pounds. In 1959, Westervelt moved up to the 177 pound class and won again. In 2006, he was named to the Southern Conference's 75th Anniversary team - the only Davidson wrestler selected for that honor. Westervelt was also a three year letterman in football for the Wildcats from 1956 through 1958, the last time Davidson posted three consecutive winning seasons.
Kerry Keith '69 Keith was a two-sport standout, as a fullback on the football team and a star on the wrestling squad. Twice he led the Wildcats in rushing, first with 719 yards on 155 carries (4.6 avg.) in 1967, then with 377 yards on 121 carries in 1968. He also scored nine touchdowns as a sophomore, tying the school record at the time. He finished his career with 1,378 yards rushing (14th all-time) on 353 attempts as well as 16 touchdowns, plus 19 receptions for 225 yards. On the mats, Keith advanced to the national tournament in 1968, earning Davidson’s first-ever points at the national meet with a first-round victory. He was the Southern Conference champion at 191 pounds as a senior, one of only six individuals ever to win a SoCon title.
