2011-12: CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Year… 2012 CCSA Men’s Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet… CSCAA Scholar All-America Honoree… Named a Mid-Major AllAmerican by CollegeSwimming.com… Four-time CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Week honoree… NCAA qualifier… Posted the ‘Cats’ top times of the season in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 56.65 at the Kenyon Invite (12/3) and in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:59.08 at the NCAA Championships (3/22)… Was also the Wildcats’ top swimmer in the 200-yard IM with a 1:46.69 at the CCSA Championships (2/16) and in the 400-yard IM with a 3:47.38 also at the CCSA meet… Qualified for the NCAA Championship meet in the 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard IM and 400-yard IM… Recorded Davidson’s second-best time of the season in the 200-yard backstroke with a 1:50.96 at the Kenyon Invite (12/1)… Won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:55.11 and was the top finisher in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 2:06.41 in the season-opener vs. Clemson (10/1)… Swam on Davidson’s first-place 400-yard free relay (3:26.32), won the 100-yard backstroke (58.04) and took second in both the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.32) and 200-yard IM (1:57.18) vs. East Carolina (10/15)… Was on the winning 400-yard medley relay and picked up a pair of wins in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.27) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.36) against William & Mary (10/29)… Swam the breaststroke leg of Davidson’s winning 400-meter medley relay and earned wins in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:05.90), 200meter breaststroke (2:26.03) and 400-meter IM (4:36.00) vs. College of Charleston (11/5)… A member of Davidson’s 800free relay team that took second place at the Kenyon Invitational (12/3) in a time of 6:42.93… Won the 400-yard IM by touching the pads in 3:53.35 to set a pool record and finished second out of 28 swimmers in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 56.64 at the Kenyon meet… Also swam on the ‘Cats’ thirdplace 400-yard medley relay and was the runner-up in the 200-yard back… Finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 58.13 and was top swimmer in the 200-yard event with a 2:08.26 and in the 400 IM with a 4:04.72 to lead the Wildcats to a 195.5-88.5 victory over Gardner-Webb (12/21)… Was the runner up to teammate Dylan Ludwick in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:44.18 and took third in the 100-yard free with a 48.23 at the CCSA Duals (1/28)… Swam on Davidson’s first-place 400-yard medley relay at the meet as well… Was a three-time individual champion at the 2012 CCSA Championships, taking top honors in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200-yard breaststroke to earn Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet honors (2/16)… Was also a member of Davidson’s first place 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard free relay to help the ‘Cats to the runner-up spot at the meet… Qualified for the NCAA meet in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200-yard breaststroke… Took 47th in the 200 IM with a time of 1:48.04 and just missed the finals of the 400 IM with a time of 3:49.65 for 19th place at the NCAA National Championships (3/22)… Set new school and CCSA records in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:59.01 to take 28th place at the national meet.

John Young became the head coach of the Wildcat swimming and diving program at the start of the 2006-07 season. During his tenure, the Wildcats have experienced tremendous success, highlighted by Lindsay Martin ‘11 and Drew Onken ’12 becoming the first Davidson swimmers to compete at the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships in 2010 and 2012, and three team Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) championships — two for the men (2010, 2011) and one for the women (2008). Under Young’s tutelage, Onken qualified for three events at the NCAA Championships as a junior in 2012, also earning the CCSA’s Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet and Men’s Swimmer of the Year honors after helping the Wildcat men to a runner-up finish at the CCSA Championships. Also collecting hardware was Dylan Ludwick, who earned Most Outstanding Freshman accolades for his success in the distance events. Following the conclusion of the season, Onken was named a Mid-Major All-American by Collegswimming.com, while teammates Geoff Peitz and Curtis Chaney earned honorable mention honors. In addition to their outstanding work in the pool, the Wildcats also excelled in the classroom as well. Both the men’s and women’s squads were honored by the College Swim Coaches Association of America, while Onken and Peitz earned All-American honors from the association. In addition, Peitz earned Academic All-District honors. Young led the Wildcat men's swimming and diving team to its first ever conference championship in 2010, and they repeated as CCSA champions the following season. He was named CCSA Men's Swimming Coach of the Year after both championships. During his tenure, the Wildcat men have completely rewritten the record book, with only three diving records remaining from the previous era. Overseeing the teams’ move to the CCSA to begin the 2007-08 season, Young led the women’s team to the inaugural championship. He was named CCSA Women's Coach of the Year and coached 14 athletes to All-CCSA performances, including five individual event winners. Under Young's leadership, the Wildcat women have also rewritten the record book, with all but five event records set by his athletes. The 2011 season brought great success to the Wildcat swimming and diving program, including a second straight CCSA championship for the men, who finished the season

ranked 24th in the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Poll. With three individual titles and three relay titles, Peitz was named 2011 CCSA Swimmer of the Meet at the league championships, while Drew shared CCSA Swimmer of the Year behind four CCSA Swimmer of the Week honors. Peitz was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team for his success in the classroom. After becoming the first swimmer in Davidson history to compete at the NCAA Championships in 2010, Martin -who was also named CCSA Swimmer of the Year and Meet at the 2011 league championships, made her second straight appearance the following season and was named to the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-America Tea for a second straight season. Teammates Emily Castle, Curtis Chaney and Peitz earned Honorable Mention. In 2010, Young led the Wildcat men to their first league championship, earning CCSA Coach of the Year honors. Ben Lane earned Most Outstanding Male Diver for a second straight season, while Martin was named Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer after sweeping the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles. Martin, who set a pair of school records at the 2010 NCAA Championships, was named to the 2010 Mid-Major All-America Team by collegeswimming.com, while 2010 CCSA Most Promising Freshman Onken earned Honorable Mention honors for winning the 400 IM with an NCAA B-cut time at the league championships. The teams first moved to the CCSA in 2009 and continued to experience success in the new league, as both finished second at the 2009 CCSA Championships and took home several individual honors. Ben Lane was named Most Outstanding Male Diver after winning both the 1 and 3-meter events, and Curtis Chaney was named Most Outstanding Freshman Male Performer for being a three-time individual champion. In his first two seasons with the Wildcats, Young coached 10 All-CAA performers. The Wildcats also continue to excel in the classroom, with the teams consistently honored by the College Swim Coaches Association of America for academic excellence. HEAD COACH “John has a keen understanding of a highly competitive academic and athletic environment,” Director of Athletics Jim Murphy said. “His background and experience make him a great fit for Davidson.” During his tenure at Kenyon, Young coached national champions in 23 individual and 20 relay events, including Division III record-setters in four individual and two relay events, and two Olympians. Young was also responsible for the team’s strength and power program as well as recruiting. A 1997 graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., Young collected four NCAA Division III national championships as a student-athlete and was named NECAC Division III Male Athlete of the Year as a senior. The team captain and two-time Division III New England Conference Swimmer of the Year also earned All-America honors 16 times and Honorable Mention All-America recognition 10 times. Young’s impressive collegiate career also included seven NEC event records, eight Williams College records and 22 NEC titles. Before becoming a coach, Young worked as a consultant with a market research firm in Quincy, Mass., where he interacted with clients, managed the firm’s technology infrastructure, and hired and trained new analysts, giving him a skill set unique among many coaches. Young has also served as a coach at Total Performance Elite Training Camps in New York, Ohio and Wisconsin, as well as the Technique Swimming Camp at Harvard University. He is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association and the College Swim Coaches Association of America.

HINTZ Diving Coach | Sixth Season Western Illinois ‘05

Aaron Hintz, a two-time CCSA Diving Coach of the Year, enters his sixth season in charge of the Wildcat’s diving program at the start the 2012-13 season. With more than 18 years of coaching experience, Hintz has worked with athletes at every level from novice to nationals and NCAA Division I, and the Wildcats benefit from his wealth of knowledge and experience. Both Kaliya Burton-Akright and Karen Monuszko finished in the top ten of the 1-meter event at the 2012 CCSA Championships, with Burton-Akright claiming a top five finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Hintz earned CCSA co-Men’s Diving Coach of the Year in both 2009 and 2010 after coaching Ben Lane to Most Outstanding Diver honors in back to back seasons. Lane won both the 1 and 3-meter events at the 2009 CCSA championships. That season, he also coached Lane to a 26thplace finish at the NCAA Zone B Championships and a new school record on the 3-meter. The following season, he repeated as CCSA Most Outstanding Diver, once again sweeping the diving events at the conference championship. He competed at the NCAA Zone B Championships for a second straight season, finishing 28th on the 3-meter and 25th on the 1-meter board. In 2011, he coached Kaliya Burton-Akright to the CCSA championship on the 3-meter board at the league championships. “Aaron’s vision for Davidson Diving is perfectly consistent with my belief that Davidson can sustain a high-achieving swimming and diving program built around the excellence of outstanding athlete-scholars,” Young said. “Able to offer Davidson’s prestigious academics and the chance to dive in one of the country’s premier facilities, I trust that Aaron will recruit the country’s best and brightest divers. Even more importantly, I know he is a coach with whom those divers will improve when they arrive.”

(1994-97), diving coach at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (1990-92) and diving instructor for the Cedar Rapids Park and Recreation District (1990). Along the way, Hintz has coached four Diver of the Years and various university record holders. He has coached a diver to Division III NCAAs and two to the Division I NCAA Zones. At the Junior Olympic level, Hintz has coached a World Team Trial qualifier and three divers in the top-10 at multiple national meets. In a five-year stint as a Junior Olympic coach, he qualified divers to a national level meet more than 20 times. Hintz received a B.A. in journalism from Western Illinois in 2005, with a minors in creative writing and English. In addition to his coaching experience, Hintz has extensive experience working in the world of professional journalism, serving as a webmaster for Parkview Homes in Tampa, Fla., as well as a senior writer for the Macomb Eagle, editor in chief for Macomb Seen and a reporter for the Macomb Journal in Macomb, Ill. This experience aided in his development as a communicator, team builder and leader. Among his accomplishments, Hintz won the Illinois Press Association’s Maurice Scott award for the best coverage of taxation and placed in the top three in three other categories. Hintz also attended Field Medical Service School to become eligible to deploy with Marines and attained the rank of Non-Commissioned Officer, HM3. He served as a medical corpsmen with the U.S. Marines from 1988-1994.

Amy Krakauer enters her third season with the Davidson Wildcats swimming & diving program. In her first two seasons at Davidson, she has assisted in coaching two CCSA Swimmers of the Year, a CCSA Most Oustanding Freshman of the Year, two NCAA Championship appearances, a CCSA Championship (men) and numerous broken records, CCSA individual titles and All-CCSA performances. Krakauer joined the Wildcat swimming and diving staff for the 2010-11 season after spending the two seasons as an assistant coach at Colgate University, where she coached the middle distance and stroke swimmers. During her first season with the Wildcats, Krakauer helped coach Davidson to a 2011 CCSA men's championship and 14 individual and seven relay records at the league championships. “Amy's experiences, both as a student-athlete and as a professional, make her a unique and impressive fit for our program," head coach John Young said. In her two seasons with the Raiders, the middle distance team achieved 231 personal best times, 27 school records, 22 Patriot League records, 15 NCAA B-cut times and the women’s team won the 2009 Patriot League Championship. Krakauer also coached Emily Murphy, who became Colgate’s first female NCAA championship competitor, in the 200 IM and the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Krakauer’s coaching experience also includes stints at Nike Swimming Camps in 2006 and 2007 and as the head coach of the Columbia Masters Swimming program from 2005-08, while she was also a four-year member of the Columbia women’s swimming and diving team. Krakauer was a four-year letter winner for the Columbia Lions, earning First-Team All-Ivy honors in 2008, as a member of the winning 200 medley relay and runner-up 400 medley relay, and the runner-up in the 100 breast with an NCAA B-cut time at the Ivy League championships. She also earned Academic All-America Honorable Mention honors in 2008 and Academic All-Ivy honors in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The former team captain was also an NCAA Sportsmanship Award Ivy League nominee in 2006 and the Coaches Award winner in both 2005 and 2006. Krakauer earned her B.A. in Economics and German from Columbia in May of 2008, where she was an eight-semester honoree on the Dean’s List. She is a native of Colorado Springs, Colo. She won her age group at the Ironman Lousiville 2010 to earn a qualifying slot in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, where she finished ninth in her age group. She also was the top overall female finisher at the USA Triathlon Aquathlon National Championship in May of 2011 and competed in her second Ironman World Championship in October 2012.

Davidson College head swimming coach John Young announced the addition of Josh Graham as the newest member of the Wildcats’ coaching staff on Friday. “Over the years, and even before my time here, swimmers at Davidson have benefitted from working with some of the best young coaches in America” shared Young. “Josh can be counted among that group. As measured by athlete accomplishments, his career is off to a fast start. Add his enthusiasm for recruiting, and all the intangibles that help a college program to succeed, and it is easy to be excited to have him here at Cannon Pool. He is going to be a coaching star.” Graham comes to Davidson after serving as the Lead Senior Coach for South Eastern Virginia Aquatics (SEVA) in Newport News, Va. At SEVA, Josh worked primarily with swimmers transitioning to the Senior Level. In 2012, his 13 and 14 boys’ squad broke Virginia State’s 20-year-old records in the Long Course and Short Course 200-, 400-, and 800-yard freestyle relays. Those relays ranked among the nation’s top eight and earned Graham a position as a Zone Select Team Coach with Virginia Swimming. Under Graham’s direction, SEVA athletes saw great improvements, which he attributes to a greater understanding of the discipline and commitment that is necessary to achieve high level of swimming success. According to Graham, one of his best accomplishments was helping his athlete develop in incredible sense of respect for the sport. Graham earned a Bachelor’s degree in in criminology in 2009 from Penn State University, where he was a proud member of the varsity swimming team and contributed to Penn State’s success by scoring at the Big-Ten Championship during each of his four years. Graham is the former Virginia State record holder in the 200-yard freestyle – a record that was broken by his former teammate and good friend American record holder David Walters. A certified ASCA level-3 coach, Graham grew up in Newport News, Va., and started his swimming career at age five. "It has always been a goal of mine to coach in college,” says Graham, who is eager to make the transition to collegiate athletics. “To finally realize the opportunity to live out my dream at a school like Davidson is a true honor." Coach Graham will take a lead role in recruiting for the men’s team and will be involved in the preparation of every swimmer as Davidson’s men and women prepare for the CCSA Championship in February.

2011-12 IN REVIEW Onken, Burton-Akright Earn CCSA Weekly Honors Drew Onken has been selected as the CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Week, while Kaliya Burton-Akright has been named the CCSA Women’s Diver of the Week for meets competed Oct. 24-30, the league announced today. Onken won three individual events and one relay event to lead Davidson to a 161-127 victory over William & Mary Oct. 29. He took first place in the 100yard breast stroke (58.27), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.36), the 200 IM (1:53.63) and the 400-yard medley relay. Onken now has the top-two 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke times in the CCSA this season as well as the top-two 200 IM times. Burton-Albright won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events against William & Mary to score 18 of the Wildcats’ 105 points in the meet. Her score of 243.68 off the 1-meter board is the best in the CCSA this season, and her 3meter score of 231.24 is the fourth-highest in the conference.

Onken Named CCSA Swimmer of the Week Davidson junior Drew Onken has been selected as the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Men’s Swimmer of the Week for meets completed Oct. 31-Nov. 6, the league announced today. Onken was the only swimmer in the closely-contested meet vs. College of Charleston to touch the wall first in each of his performances on the day. He took first place in the 100-yard breast stroke (1:05.90), 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.03), 400 IM (4:36.00) and the 400-yard medley relay.

Onken, Burton-Akright Earn CCSA Weekly Honors For the second time this year, the Davidson men’s and women’s swimming teams had a swimmer/diver of the week on the same week when Drew Onken (Marietta, Ga.) for the men and Meredith Nakano (Alpharetta, Ga.) for the women were honored today by the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association for meets competed, Nov. 28-Dec. 4. The weekly award for Onken was his third of the season and sixth overall for the men. Nakano became the first swimmer on the women’s side this year, while Kaliya Burton-Akright (Tampa, Fla.) was the diver of the week, Nov. 3 For the Wildcat women, Nakano, a freshman, led them to a fourth-place team finish as she placed second in the 200-yard IM (2:06.80), third in the 200yard breaststroke (2:20.00) and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.26) last week at the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College. She also swam on the 400-yard freestyle relay team which placed third overall, and the 400-yard medley relay team which finished in fourth-place.

Trio of Wildcats Earn CCSA Honors Davidson College’s Geoffrey Peitz and Tim Keating have been selected as the CCSA Men’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for meets competed Jan. 16-22, the league announced today. Davidson’s Meredith Nakano has been selected as the CCSA Women’s Swimmer of the Week. Peitz won a pair of individual events and two relay events in Davidson’s 19689 victory over Gardner-Webb last weekend. The senior took home first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.87 before touching in at 1:51.21 in the 200-yard backstroke. In the 200-yard medley relay, Peitz swam the first leg with a split time of 23.64. He then swam the first leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay with a split time of 21.71. Keating won the 3-meter dive and placed second in the 1-meter dive in the Wildcats’ dual meet victory over GardnerWebb last weekend. The junior posted a season-best score of 179.55 on the 3meter board before earning 158.87 on the 1-meter board. Nakano won three individual events in Davidson’s 170-124 win over the Bulldogs. She won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.45 before taking first-place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.22. The freshman then swam the 100-yard fly, clocking in at 57.88 for her final first-place finish.

Peitz Wins Third Swimmer of the Week Honor Davidson College’s Geoffrey Peitz has been selected as the CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Week for meets completed Jan. 23-29, the league announced today. It’s the third time this season the senior has won the honor, and the sixth time a Wildcat has won the award. Peitz won a pair of individual events and one relay event in Davidson’s victory over Howard last weekend at the CCSA Duals. He swam on the first-place 400yard medley relay team that broke a 12year-old pool record with a time of 3:20.39, besting the old mark by over four seconds. His 49.60 backstroke split is the fastest in the CCSA this year and is only the fourth sub 50-second 100 backstroke in the CCSA’s history. Peitz took home first-place in the 100yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.04 before touching in at 46.91 in the 100yard freestyle.

Onken Narrowly Misses 400 IM Finals

Men Narrowly Miss Taking Home CCSA Swimming Title, Women Finish Sixth The Davidson men’s and women’s swimming teams concluded their run at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships with the men just missing taking home its third-straight title, finishing second, while the women closed out their final day with a sixth-place finish in the last day of competition at the CCSA Championships in Gabrielson Natatorium Saturday night. The Davidson men came up 6.5 points short of first-place College of Charleston, capping out at 884 team points over the championship weekend, while the women earned 340 points. They were eight points away from fifthplace finisher North Florida. Taking home the title on the women’s side was Florida Gulf Coast, their fourth straight CCSA Championship. Despite coming up just short for the title, the Wildcat men were well represented in the end of the year top awards, led by standout Drew Onken. The junior was named the CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Year for the second-straight year and took home the Men’s Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet. Onken had a stout campaign that saw him earn three CCSA Swimmer of the Week honors, while holding the season’s top spots on the top-15 list in the 100 Freestyle (46.24), 200 Backstroke (1:50.96), 200 Breaststroke (2:02.23), 200 IM (1:51.03) and 400 IM (3:53.35). Over the weekend at the championships, Onken won first in the 200 IM and earned a “B” cut with a time of 1:46.69 as well as first in the 400 IM on a “B” cut time of 3:47.38. He capped it off with a first in the 200 Breaststroke, touching in at 1:59.65. Onken was not alone in earning top honors as Dylan Ludwick was tabbed the Most Outstanding Freshman Performer. The first-year swimmer placed first in the 500-yard Freestyle with a time of 4:25.34 and the 1650-yard Freestyle with a time of 15:40.50. Both his 500 and 1650 Free times set new meet and conference records.

Davidson swimmer Drew Onken finished 19th in the 400 IM and just missed out on making the finals in the event last night. He posted a time of 3:49.65, and a time of 3:48.26 would have put him in the top 16 and in the finals. Drew Onken set a new school and CCSA record in the 200 breast Saturday in his final event at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The junior's time of 1:59.01 earned him 28th place at the competition. The previous CCSA record in the 200 breaststroke was set by Randy Buchanan from the College of Charleston in 2009. Onken, who was named CCSA swimmer of the meet and CCSA swimmer of the year at the 2012 CCSA Conference Championship, has left a mark on the conference record book. During the 20112012 season, he was recognized as CCSA swimmer of the week three times for his performances. Onken is the first male swimmer from Davidson to qualify for the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, and also competed this weekend in the 200 and 400 individual medley. His highest placing performance this weekend was a 19th place finish in the 400 Individual Medley.

Peitz Named Academic All-District Davidson senior swimmer Geoff Peitz has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Men’s At-Large First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The senior advances to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America honors. Men's and Women's Swim Teams Honored by CSCAA The Davidson men’s and women’s swim teams have both been honored by the College Swimming Coaches Associate of America for their work in the classroom during the 2012 season, earning Scholar All-America Team Honors as announced by the organization this week. To be eligible for the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team Award, programs must achieve team grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher. The award is presented to teams who meet the requirements in the fall semester as well as the semester of the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships (winter/spring).

Three Wildcats Earn Swimming Mid-Major All-America Accolades Davidson junior Drew Onken has been named Mid-Major All-America by CollegeSwimming.com, while seniors Geoff Peitz and Curtis Chaney earned honorable mention honors, it was announced today. Onken, who was named Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention in each of the last two seasons is the CCSA Swimmer of the Year and the league’s Swimmer of the Meet at the 2012 conference championship, he now holds three individual league records (200 breast, 200 IM, and 400 IM) and is a member of four relay teams that also hold the conference record. Peitz, who earns Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention honors for the second straight season, is a four-time AllCCSA selection and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team trials in the 100 back. He won the 100 and 200 back at this year’s CCSA Championship meet and collected conference titles on the 400 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. A four-year All-CCSA selection, Chaney also received Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention honors in 2011. He collected CCSA individual titles in the 100 free and 200 free. He also won league titles as a member of the 400 free, 800 free and 400 medley relay teams.

To qualify as a Scholar All-America honoree, swimmers and divers must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and qualify for their respective national championship. Student-athletes can receive honorable mention acknowledgement with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and a “B” standard qualification in their respective national championship.

Mary Shell Brosche, 1999 & 2000 Mary Shell Brosche’s performances at the Southern States Championships in 1999 and 2000 earned her backto-back top swimmer honors and helped the Wildcat women to consecutive team titles. Brosche won the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 back events in both years and was once the school record holder in both IMs. Extremely versatile, Brosche remains on two additional Wildcat Top-10 lists — the 100 back, the 200 back and the 100 fly.

Matthew Buck, 1995 As a freshman in 1995, Matthew Buck made a splash with three top individual finishes at his first Southern States Championships. Swimming to victories in the 200 IM, 100 breast and 200 breast, Buck led the Davidson men to their first-ever Southern States team crown. He was also part of the Wildcats’ winning 400 medley relay. A versatile and talented swimmer, Buck’s school record in the 100 breast is still intact, and he remains a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 breast and 200 IM.

Heather Sweeney, 1995 Heather Sweeney’s rookie campaign culminated with an impressive showing at the 1995 Southern States Championships, as she claimed a pair of individual titles. Out-swimming the pack, Sweeney touched the wall first in both the 200 IM and 400 IM, setting a new meet record in the 400. She also raced to second in the 200 breast and helped the 800 freestyle relay team to a first-place finish. Sweeney remains a Wildcat Top-10 performer in the 200 and 400 IMs.

MOST OUTSTANDING FRESHMAN Curtis Chaney, 2009

During his sophomore season, Drew Onken was named CCSA coMen’s Swimmer of the Year for winning four CCSA weekly honors. Onken was named CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Week on October 6, November 17, December 8 and January 20. Onken once again claimed the honor in 2012 after another stellar season as a junior. At the CCSA Championship meet, Onken came away a three-time winner with first-place finishes in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200-yard breaststroke. In addition, he qualified for the NCAA National Championships in all three events, becoming the first male swimmer from Davidson to do so.

After winnng three individual titles and swimming on three winning relays, Curtis Chaney was named the 2009 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Most Outstanding Male Freshman of the Year. Chaney won the 100 free (45.78) and set new school records while winning both the 200 (1:37.72) and 500 freestyles (4:26.89). He also swam on the school-record setting and winning 400 (3:01.85) and 800 freestyle (6:43.92) relays and on the runner-up school-record setting 400 medley relay (3:23.38).

Drew Onken, 2010 Freshman Drew Onken was honored as the 2010 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Most Outstanding Male Freshman Performer, the second straight season a Wildcat has been so honored. Onken capped off his impressive rookie season by winning the 400 IM with a CCSArecord time of 3:51.93 and swam the breaststroke leg of the Wildcats’ CCSA record-setting 200 and 400 medley relays. He also finished second in the 200 IM with a school-record time of 1:49.56. and setting Davidson standards in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke.

Dylan Ludwick 2012 After skipping the 2011 season, the Davidson swim team continued on with its trend of boasting the CCSA’s top freshman in 2012 with Dylan Ludwick. In his CCSA Championship debut, Ludwick won the 500-yard free and 1,650-yard free to help the Wildcats to a runner-up finish. He set the meet record in both events, and added another record as a member of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team.

AWARDS & HONORS MOST OUTSTANDING DIVER Ben Lane, 2009, 2010 After winning both diving events, freshman Ben Lane was named Most Outstanding Male Diver of the Year at the 2009 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships. Lane was the CCSA champion on the 3-meter dive with a score of 293.70 and won his second individual title, finishing first on the 1-meter dive with a score of 285.10. He repeated as Most Outstanding Male Diver of the Year the following season, once again sweeping the diving events at the 2010 CCSA Championships. Lane won the 1-meter with a score of 293.76 and the 3meter with a score of 311.25.

SUSAN K. ROBERTS AWARDS Ellie Trefzger, 2003-07 Ellie Trefzger received the Susan K. Roberts Award in 2007, given annually by Davidson College to a female athlete in recognition of outstanding dedication and contribution to the school’s intercollegiate athletics. Trefzger finished her four-year career on the Wildcat Top-10 performers list in the 200 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 1650 free, 100 fly and 200 fly.

Honda Inspiration Award Kendra Berner, 2000-01 Kendra Berner received the Honda Inspiration Award, given nationally to a student-athlete who by perseverance has overcome personal adversity or disability or has undergone extraordinary personal sacrifice to achieve success in women’s athletics. Though born with a congenital deformation of her right hand, Berner won four silver medals in the 2000 Paralympics.

2008 WOMEN’S CCSA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcat women took home the inaugural title at the 2008 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships, held at the Huntersville Aquatic Center, Feb. 2022. Head coach John Young was named women’s coach of the year, leading the Wildcats to the inaugural CCSA title in just his second year as head coach. The Wildcat women finished first with 660 points, ahead of Florida Gulf Coast (634) and Gardner-Webb (620.5). Georgia Southern (463.5), North Florida (409), College of Charleston (373), Campbell (198), Howard (104), Radford (76), N.C. A&T (64) and VMI (49) rounded out the field. Davidson won three events and a pair of relays en route to its first team championship. Freshman Lindsey Martin won both the 50 and the 100 freestyles with times of 23.62 and 51.52, respectively, while classmate Anna Stringfield won the 400 IM with a time of 4:28.42. The Wildcats’ 400 freestyle team of junior Courtney Sanders, freshman Emily Castle, Stringfield and Martin finished first in a winning, schoolrecord time of 3:28.52, and the 800 freestyle relay team of Stringfield, junior Courtney Sanders, sophomore Caitlin Sheetz and freshman Jessica Delgehausen won the event with a time of 7:36.75.

2010 CCSA CHAMPIONS 2010 MEN’S CCSA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Davidson Wildcat men’s swimming and diving team captured the 2010 CCSA championship, held at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee Feb. 18-20. The Wildcat men defeated Gardner-Webb, 907-653, to earn the team’s first title in school history. Freshman Drew Onken was honored as Men’s Most Outstanding Freshman Performer, capturing a title in the 400 IM (3:51.93, CCSA record) and setting Davidson standards in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke. Sophomore Ben Lane was named Men’s Most Outstanding Diver for the second consecutive season sweeping the diving events for a second straight season, recording Conference records off both boards. Head coach John Young was named Men’s Coach of the Year and diving coach Aaron Hintz was named co-Diving Coach of the Year for a second straight season. In addition to individual titles from Onken and Lane, the Wildcats had individual champions in the 100 fly (Joe Burquist, 49.43, school record), 50 free (Bryan Droll, 20.43, school record) and 100 and 200 backstrokes (Geoff Peitz, 50.09, CCSA record; 1:48.81). 2011 MEN’S CCSA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM ATHENS, Ga. — With another individual win for junior Geoffrey Peitz, sophomore Drew Onken and junior Curtis Chaney and another NCAA Bcut, CCSA and school-record winning time in the 400 freestyle relay, the Davidson men’s swimming and diving team won their second straight CCSA Championship as competition concluded at the Gabrielson Natatorium. Peitz won the 200 back in a CCSA and school-record, NCAA B-cut time of 1:45.67, and was named CCSA Men’s Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet. His dominant performance included three individual titles — the 200 IM, 100 back and 200 back, all in school and CCSA record, NCAA B-cut times, while swimming on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle and the 400 medley relays, also all school and CCSA record, NCAA B-cut times. Chaney won a second title with a win in the 100 free, and Onken — who was named co-Men’s Swimmer of the Year for winning four CCSA weekly honors, won his third championship with a win in the 200 breast. Peitz, Chaney, sophomore Wills Cooper and senior Bryan Droll finished off the meet with a school and CCSA-record NCAA B-cut time of 3:00.61. Davidson head coach John Young repeated as Men’s Coach of the Year, leading the Wildcats to a second straight championship. Davidson entered the day with a four-point margin over the College of Charleston, who ended up in third with 796 points. The Wildcats, who led at the end of all three days, finished with 844 points, ahead of runner-up Gardner-Webb with 814.

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Becoming the first Davidson swimmer in the program history to do so, junior Lindsey Martin was selected to the 2010 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., at Boilermaker Aquatic Center, March 18-20. Martin was invited for the Wildcats based on her time in the 50 free, after qualifying with a winning, school and league-record time of 22.57 at the CCSA Championships last month. She will also compete in the 100 freestyles and 200 freestyles, after swimming NCAA B-cut times in both events. Martin earned Swimmer of the Meet honors for a second straight year after sweeping the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles at the league championships and anchoring the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays, helping Davidson to a runner-up finish. She is the Davidson record holder in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles and as a member of the 200 and 400 medley and 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- In Davidson’s first ever appearance at the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships, junior Lindsey Martin finished 30th with a time of 22.75 in the preliminary session of the 50 freestyle on the first day of competition at Purdue University's Boilermaker Aquatic Center Friday. The top 16 finishers in the event advanced to the evening's final, led by Georgia’s Annemarie Botek with a time of 22.16. Liv Jensen (California, 22.21), Shara Stafford (Florida, 22.22), Samantha Woodward (Stanford, 22.26), Lauren Perdue (Virginia, 22.26), Amywren Miller (Notre Dame, 22.30), Hannah Wilson (California, 22.31), Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace (Auburn, 22.32) and Elizabeth Webb (Stanford, 22.32) fill out the championship final. Michele King (Tennessee, 22.35), Presley Bard (Southern California, 22.35), Whitney Campbell (Louisville, 22.36), Kate Dwelley (Stanford 22.38), Rebecca Thompson (Wisconsin, 22.42), Justine Schluntz (Arizona, 22.44) and Sarah Bateman (Florida, 22.47) advanced to the consolation final. Martin finished tied for 30th-place with Texas A&M’s Sarah Woods with her time of 22.75, just slower than her qualifying time of 22.57.

LAFAYETTE, IND. -- Junior Lindsey Martin continued making Davidson history at the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships, breaking her own college record in the 200 freestyle on the second day of competition at Purdue University’s Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Martin finished 55th in the event’s preliminaires with a Davidson and personal-best time of 1:48.76. She previously set the record at the CCSA Championships, with a winning, NCAA B-cut time of 1:49.02. Georgia’s Allison Schmitt won the preliminary with a pool-record time of 1:43.29, followed immediately by teammate Morgan Scroggy (1:43.41). Leone Vorster (Arizona, 1:44.41), Julia Wilkinson (Texas A&M, 1:44.62), Megan Romano (Georgia, 1:44.70), Lauren Perdue (Virginia, 1:44.83), Kate Dwelley (Stanford, 1;44.93) and Sara Isakovic (California, 1:45.14) also advanced to the evening’s championship final. 100 Freestyle W. LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Junior Lindsey Martin concluded her competition at the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships by swimming another personal and Davidson record time in the 100 freestyle in the preliminary competition Saturday morning at Purdue University’s Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Martin finished 28th in her final race of the competition with a personal and college record time of 49.55. She did the same in the 200 free prelim yesterday morning with a time of 1:48.76. Auburn’s Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace won the preliminary with a time of 47.74, and Texas A&M’s Julia Wilkinson also went under 48 with a runner-up time of 47.89. Stanford teammates Julia Smit (48.16) and Kate Dwelley (48.20) finished third and fourth, while Florida’s Shara Stafford (48.31), California’s Liv Jensen (48.44), Georgia’s Morgan Scroggy (48.45) and Tennessee’s Michele King (48.48) fill out the championship heat. Hannah Wilson (California, 48.50), Justine Schlunt (Arizona, 48.59), Lauren Perdue (Virginia, 48.61), Megan Romano (Georgia, 48.64), Karlee Bispo (Texas, 48.69), Elizabeth Webb (Stanford, 48.73), Samantha Woodward (Stanford, 48.73) and Erica Dagg (California, 48.89) made it back to the evening session in the consolation final.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Martin Invited to Second Straight NCAA Championship Meet DAVIDSON, N.C. — For a second straight season, senior Lindsey Martin will represent the Davidson swimming and diving team as competition opens at the 2011 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships tomorrow at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the campus of the University of Texas. Martin was invited to the 2011 Championships based on her relay split (100 freestyle) time of 48.95 — also a conference and school record — in the 400 freestyle relay at the league championships, where she was also named CCSA Women’s Swimmer of the Meet for a second straight season. She was a part of two winning relays and won individual titles in both the 50 and 100 freestyles at the 2011 CCSA Championships. She also swam three individual NCAA B-cut times — the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, and contributed to an NCAA B-cut time in the 400 free relay. Martin also earned 2010 CCSA Women’s Swimmer of the Year honors after being named CCSA Women’s Swimmer of the Week five times.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — In her second straight NCAA appearance, senior Lindsey Martin finished 47th in the nation in the 50 freestyle as competition opened at the 2011 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday, March 17, at the Lee and Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the campus of the University of Texas. The 2011 CCSA Swimmer of the Meet and three-time league champion in the event, Martin finished sixth in her heat with a time of 22.89, but missed making it back to the evening session. She swam out of heat five, along with Texas A&M’s Liliana Ibanez (22.71), Purdue’s Ariel Martin (23.06), California’s Hannah Wilson (22.33), Arizona’s Kaitlin Flederbach (22.52), UCLA’s Cynthia Fascella (22.69), LSU’s Samantha Goates (23.16) and Penn State’s Paige Whitmire (22.74). There were eight heats of the event, which required a time of 22.33 to final. Margo Geer (Arizona, 21.79), Arian Vanderpool-Wallace (Auburn, 21.91), Liv Jensen (Cal Berkeley, 21.98), Jane Trepp (Louisiana, 21.99), Lauren Perdue (Virginia, 22.01), Kasey Carlson (Southern, 22.15), Betsy Webb (Stanford, 22.15), Sarah Bateman (Florida, 22.16) and Shara Stafford (Florida, 22.72) swam the eight best times. In her second straight NCAA appearance, the two-time CCSA Women’s Swimmer of the Year wrapped up what is sure to be a Davidson Hall of Fame career with a 45th-place time of 49.75 in the 100 freestyle prelims. Martin swam out of lane seven in heat six of nine, alongside Texas’ Kelsey Amundsen (28th, 49.07), Maryland’s Megan Lafferty (24th, 49.02), Indiana’s Brittany Strumbel (27th, 49.03), USC’s Kasey Carlson (12th, 48.48), Florida’s Sarah Bateman (38th, 49.46) and Texas’ Bethany Adams (31st, 49.18). Auburn’s Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace won the event’s prelim with a pool-record time of 46.91, followed by Stanford’s Kate Dwelley (47.62) and Arizona’s Margo Geer (47.70). NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Drew Onken Earns Spot in NCAA Swimming Championships Davidson swimmer Drew Onken has been selected to swim in the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships March 22-24, at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash. Onken is the first Davidson swimmer to be invited to the men’s championship meet and the second Wildcat swimmer to participate in the NCAA Championships, joining Lindsey Martin ‘11. ESPN3.com will stream finals sessions on March 22 and 23. Additionally, ESPNU will air a 90-minute show at 12:30 p.m. ET, Sunday, April 1. Onken qualified with his time of 3:47.38 in the 400 IM, which earned him a first-place finish in the CCSA Championships and broke the conference record. The junior also had NCAA B-cut times in the 200 IM (1:46.69, CCSA record) and 200 breaststroke (1:59.65) and will swim all three events in the NCAAs.

Onken Narrowly Misses 400 IM Finals Davidson swimmer Drew Onken finished 19th in the 400 IM and just missed out on making the finals in the event last night. He posted a time of 3:49.65, and a time of 3:48.26 would have put him in the top 16 and in the finals.

Onken Sets New School and CCSA Record in 200 Breast at NCAAs

Onken Finishes 47th in the 200 IM at the NCAA Championships Davidson swimmer Drew Onken swam the 200 IM in 1:48.04, the junior's second-fastest time, to place 47th at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday morning. Onken continues the meet tomorrow with the 400 IM.

Drew Onken set a new school and CCSA record in the 200 breast Saturday in his final event at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The junior's time of 1:59.01 earned him 28th place at the competition. The previous CCSA record in the 200 breaststroke was set by Randy Buchanan from the College of Charleston in 2009. Onken, who was named CCSA swimmer of the meet and CCSA swimmer of the year at the 2012 CCSA Conference Championship, has left a mark on the conference record book. During the 2011-2012 season, he was recognized as CCSA swimmer of the week three times for his performances. He now holds three individual conference records (200 breast, 200 individual medley, and 400 individual medley) and is on four relays that also hold the conference record. Onken is the first male swimmer from Davidson to qualify for the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, and also competed this weekend in the 200 and 400 individual medley. His highest placing performance this weekend was a 19th place finish in the 400 Individual Medley. Onken continues to represent Davidson on the national level and will travel this June to Omaha, Neb., for the US Olympic Trials.

JIM MURPHY DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, 53, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. Murphy, an Atlanta native, played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10 million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. The last five years have seen the construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, the new Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and batting cages and the football stadium expansion project, which included a state-of-the-art weight room, a new press box and additional permanent seating. Murphy, the 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his 24-year-old son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

CAROL QUILLEN PRESIDENT Carol Quillen, who was previously the vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives at Rice University, became the 18th president of Davidson College on August 1, 2011. Quillen has had a long and distinguished career at Rice. She joined the faculty as an assistant professor of history in 1990, and she earned promotion to associate professor in 1996. From 2004 to 2008, she served as the first director of Rice's Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance, leading development of the center's new mission and shaping an agenda that helped distinguish the center from other organizations. From 2006 to 2010, Quillen served as Rice's vice provost for academic affairs, focusing particularly on developing initiatives that cross academic schools, faculty diversity and faculty development, and resource development. During this time, she worked with faculty to develop and secure funding for a new Center for Asian Studies and a new Institute for Urban Research. She co-chaired the president's diversity task force, and instituted mentoring programs for junior faculty. As vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives, Quillen was responsible for developing and implementing Rice's overall global strategy, which includes research partnerships, recruiting strategies, curricular revision and international opportunities for students. She also facilitates implementation of university-wide initiatives, including the Institute for Urban Research, Rice 360 (a global health effort), and collaborations with Baylor and other institutions within the Texas Medical Center. James W. Crownover, chair of Rice University's Board of Trustees, said, "It's an honor for Rice that one of ours has been chosen to lead a place as respected as Davidson. She will work hard, and she will succeed there." Quillen grew up in New Castle, Del., a small town where she says "it was second nature to support the community and look out for other people." A Presbyterian, she attended Quaker schools from pre-kindergarten through high school. She earned a B.A. degree in American history from the University of Chicago, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with special and general honors, then received a Ph.D. degree in European history from Princeton. A humanist whose academic interests include early modern European history, European intellectual history and gender studies, Quillen has written two books on Petrarch, as well as a number of scholarly articles, reviews and papers. She has received a number of teaching awards during her tenure at Rice. Quillen's daughter, Caitlin, will be a first-year student at the University of North Carolina next fall. Quillen's husband, Ken Kennedy-a computer pioneer who founded the computer science program at Rice—died of pancreatic cancer in 2007. "His greatest gift to me, and to the Rice community, was in living the life he would have chosen," Quillen said. "That's something I think about in a very profound way every day." At Davidson, Quillen succeeds Tom Ross '72, who announced in August 2010 that he would step down to become president of the University of North Carolina system in January 2011.

Sports Information Ashley Bailey is in her first season as an assistant sports information director at Davidson. She serves as the primary contact for field hockey, volleyball, swimming & diving, women’s cross country and women’s track & field. Bailey came to Davidson after spending two years at Charleston Southern University in North Charleston, S.C., where she served as the interim sports information director from August, 2011 to June, 2012. In that role, she oversaw publicity efforts for the Buccaneers’ 14 Division I athletics programs, acting as primary contact for the football, women’s basketball, baseball, golf and track & field programs. She had previously served as an assistant director of athletic communications at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa.
