HEAD COACH GARY ANDREW Head Coach 26th Year Michigan, ‘74
Now in his 26th season as the head coach of the men's cross country and track & field teams, Gary Andrew has continually pushed his student-athletes to achieve success in both the athletic and academic arenas. Last season, his cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams finished fourth in each conference championship meet, while several individuals turned in championship and record-breaking performances. Junior Ryan Hopkins ran the fastest cross country 8K in program history and led the Wildcats with an All-SoCon first-team performance at the SoCon Championship. Sophomore Demetrios Pagonis was also named to the AllSoCon team. Freshman Andrew Lantz became Davidson’s first-ever indoor 800-meter run champion, while freshman Grayam SailorTynes claimed the 1500-meter run outdoors. All four outdoor school distance records fell as Charlie Schmitt completed the 3000-meter run in 8:26.17 and the 5000-meter run in 14:27.21. Ian Tupper completed the steeplechase in 9:14.39, while Hopkins completed the 10,000meter run in 30:14.87. Additionally, Bryce Jones set a new school indoor pole vault standard of 14-3 1/4 and senior JinHan Song lowered the 60-meter dash standard to 7.05 seconds. The two-time Southern Conference coach of the year enjoyed one of his best seasons to date during the 2009-10 academic year. His 2009 cross country team posted program-best finishes at the Southern Conference Championships (second) and NCAA Southeast Region Championships (12th). Lance Harden earned SoCon Runner of the Month and All-SoCon first team honors, while Ryan Hopkins also earned an all-conference nod. During the indoor track season, Tom Divinnie set new school records in the mile, 3000- and 5000meter runs. The indoor and outdoor track teams both earned fifth-place finishes with multiple athletes earning All-SoCon honors. Andrew has also coached runners to Southern Conference Track Performer of the Year and Southern Conference Freshman of the Year honors. In 2007, Douglas Noreen was named SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Performer after earning a pair of first-place finishes at the 2007 SoCon championships, the 800-meters and the 1,500 meters. In 2005, Lance Harden was named SoCon Freshman of the Year, after finishing 16th overall at the cross country championships. Andrew was named SoCon Coach of the
20
Year in both 2006 and 2007 for outdoor track and field, after leading the Wildcats to a program-best third place finish at the 2006 SoCon track and field championships and another third-place finish in 2007. The indoor track and field team also earned its highest finish ever at the conference championships in 2007, placing third. Under Andrew's watch, the Wildcat men's cross country team has earned all-academic honors from the U.S. Cross Country Coaches Association, including "with distinction" honors in 2004, for the past 13 seasons, and his track and field teams have been ranked among the top squads in the nation academically for several seasons. Mid-distance standout Dan Gibson '02 was named to the 2002 CoSIDA Academic All-American team. A 1974 graduate of the University of Michigan, Andrew received a master's degree

in biomechanics from Penn State in 1986. He also served as an assistant coach for the Nittany Lions' men's cross country team. As part of his research at Penn State, Andrew worked with several national- and international-caliber distance runners. He was also involved with a research project for the U.S. Olympic Committee, which analyzed elite female distance runners. He co-authored a paper entitled "An Approach to Biomechanical Profiling of Elite Distance Runners," which was published in the International Journal of Sport Biomechanics. Also, research from his master's thesis was cited in "The Biomechanics of Distance Running." Andrew launched his coaching career at Chapel Hill High School in 1978. During his tenure there, his teams won six boys' and girls' North Carolina cross country titles through 1983.
ASSISTANT COACHES JOEL WILLIAMS Assistant Coach 1st Year North Central College, ‘98
Joel Williams begins his first season as the Davidson men's track and field assistant coach. Williams arrives in Davidson after a fouryear stint as the assistant men’s and women’s track and field coach at Williams College. “Joel is a great addition to our staff and we're excited to have him join us,” said Andrew. “He's a highly successful coach who brings a wealth of experience in the sprints, hurdles and field events.” At Williams College, Williams guided his track athletes to 88 all-conference honors and to 43 NCAA Division III All-American honors. His athletes also earned 22 individual and relay conference championships and 16 trips to the NCAA Championships. The Williams College track team also earned eight team conference championship titles and placed in the top five at the NCAA Track & Field Championships three times. Williams’ athletes also performed well in the classroom as five earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and one was named an Academic AllAmerican.
“I'm excited and grateful to have to opportunity to be a part of Wildcat Athletics,” said Williams. “One of my goals has always been to work with college athletes that are competitive at the highest levels, both in the classroom and on the field. I don't think you can find a better place to do that than Davidson.” This past spring, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named Williams the New England Region men’s assistant coach of the year. He received the same honor for women’s coaching in 2009. Williams has also coached track & field at Division III institutions Elmhurst College (Ill.), Aurora University (Ill.), and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (N.Y.) and at Division I Kent State (Ohio). Williams also assisted with the Williams College volleyball team and has coached approximately 300 all-conference athletes, nearly 100 NCAA qualifiers, over 50 NCAA AllAmericans and one NCAA champion. Williams is a Chicago native and earned his B.A. in physical education from North Central
College in Naperville, Ill. At North Central he competed on the track & field team, helping the Cardinals win three consecutive College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) titles from 1996-98. Williams earned All-CCIW Honors (100m, 200m, & 4x100m) each of those three years. He was named team co-captain and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the indoor 55-meters and outdoor long jump, 100m, 200m and 4x100-meter events (1996-1998), twice achieving All-American honors in the 200m and 4x100m Relay. In 1998, Williams capped his collegiate career as a member of the national champion 4x100 Relay as North Central won its fourth NCAA team title. While at NCC, Williams was also an assistant women’s varsity volleyball coach and head JV coach, guiding the Cardinals to a 10663 overall mark and two berths in the conference championship match.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR/PRESIDENT JIM MURPHY, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
CAROL QUILLEN, PRESIDENT
Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, 53, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. Murphy, an Atlanta native, played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10 million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. The last five years have seen the construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, the new Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and batting cages and the football stadium expansion project, which included a state-of-the-art weight room, a new press box and additional Murphy and Tripp Merritt make a presentation to Davidson all-time leading passer Ryan Alexander. permanent seating. Murphy, the 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his 24-year-old son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Carol Quillen, who was previously the vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives at Rice University, became the 18th president of Davidson College on August 1, 2011. Quillen has had a long and distinguished career at Rice. She joined the faculty as an assistant professor of history in 1990, and she earned promotion to associate professor in 1996. From 2004 to 2008, she served as the first director of Rice's Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance, leading development of the center's new mission and shaping an agenda that helped distinguish the center from other organizations. From 2006 to 2010, Quillen served as Rice's vice provost for academic affairs, focusing particularly on developing initiatives that cross academic schools, faculty diversity and faculty development, and resource development. During this time, she worked with faculty to develop and secure funding for a new Center for Asian Studies and a new Institute for Urban Research. She co-chaired the president's diversity task force, and instituted mentoring programs for junior faculty. As vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives, Quillen was responsible for developing and implementing Rice's overall global strategy, which includes research partnerships, recruiting strategies, curricular revision and international opportunities for students. She also facilitates implementation of university-wide initiatives, including the Institute for Urban Research, Rice 360 (a global health effort), and collaborations with Baylor and other institutions within the Texas Medical Center. James W. Crownover, chair of Rice University's Board of Trustees, said, "It's an honor for Rice that one of ours has been chosen to lead a place as respected as Davidson. She will work hard, and she will succeed there." Quillen grew up in New Castle, Del., a small town where she says "it was second nature to support the community and look out for other people." A Presbyterian, she attended Quaker schools from prekindergarten through high school. She earned a B.A. degree in American history from the University of Chicago, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with special and general honors, then received a Ph.D. degree in European history from Princeton. A humanist whose academic interests include early modern European history, European intellectual history and gender studies, Quillen has written two books on Petrarch, as well as a number of scholarly articles, reviews and papers. She has received a number of teaching awards during her tenure at Rice. Quillen's daughter, Caitlin, will be a first-year student at the University of North Carolina next fall. Quillen's husband, Ken Kennedy-a computer pioneer who founded the computer science program at Rice—died of pancreatic cancer in 2007. "His greatest gift to me, and to the Rice community, was in living the life he would have chosen," Quillen said. "That's something I think about in a very profound way every day." At Davidson, Quillen succeeds Tom Ross '72, who announced in August 2010 that he would step down to become president of the University of North Carolina system in January 2011.

THE HISTORY OF THE WILDCAT On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in the South. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6. According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 pounds less. Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensive attack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.” Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in
the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved overwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wild men from North Carolina.” The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preachers.” — revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives
