DAVIDSON WILDCATS

2012 OUTLOOK Now in her 30th season at the helm, head coach Caroline Price will enter the 2012 campaign seeking to capture the program’s first Southern Conference tournament title after finishing runner-up three times in the last seven years. The Wildcats look to regroup after breaking in five freshmen and finishing just 5-20 overall, 1-9 in the SoCon, a season ago. It was the first time since 2001 they had a record below .500. Nine of the last 11 years though they have had a winning mark, and of coach Price's 29 seasons, the Wildcats have finished at or above .500 in 23 of them. Despite last year’s tough season, coach Price still was able to capture her 400th career win. This year's club will feature the return of nine letterwinners from last year, including a trio of seniors who will look to lead a young team. Of the nine returners, four of them were starters and eight of them saw playing time either in singles or doubles. SINGLES After finishing with 83 singles wins in 2010, Davidson had just 34 last year. The ‘Cats had a tough go of it against SoCon foes, with just 10 wins. • Senior Katharine Dicconson: Played in four singles matches in 2011 ... scored sixth career singles win, a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Elon, picking up second career SoCon win as well. • Senior Romina Clemente: A doubles specialist first two years, the senior got into 15 singles matches a year ago ... Wildcats’ main No. 5 and 6 singles player ... scored first career SoCon winner with a victory against Chattanooga ... earned three of four singles wins at home. • Senior Stephani Synn: Battled injuries in the middle stages of the season last year, but still got into 14 singles matches ... has 19 career wins entering last year ... played in 12 matches at No. 1 and will look to hold that spot during 2012 ... has 10 league wins for her career. • Junior Catherine Wood: Did not play in any official matches during sophomore season. • Sophomore Frizzi Bschorer: Earned a start in nine singles matches, going 2-6 with an unfinished ... picked up first collegiate win vs. N.C. A&T, 6-1, 6-2 ... filled the No. 4, 5 and 6 slots in 2011. • Sophomore Nisha Crouser: Of the five freshmen last year, she saw the second-most action ... played in 22 singles matches as one of the Wildcats’ main No. 2 & 3 player ... first career win was a 6-1, 6-1 triumph vs. N.C. A&T. • Sophomore Elise Held: Played at the No. 5 and 6 positions during first year ... went 1-4, with all five decisions coming against SoCon opponents ... earned first collegiate win vs. Western Carolina, a straight set 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5. • Sophomore Tamara Hill: Opened freshman campaign with a pair of wins

vs. N.C. A&T and UNC Asheville last year ... played five singles matches in all, splitting between No. 5 and 6 slot. • Sophomore Brites Moniz-Soares: Had a strong start to Wildcat career by leading the team with eight singles wins in 2011... sported an 8-15 record overall, getting two of those wins vs. the league ... played No. 2-4 positions and is expected to fill the No. 2 slot in 2012. NEWCOmER • Freshman Blake Nickles: Ranked 11th in South Carolina ... received Merit Scholarship from Montessori and graduated valedictorian ... part of the first graduating class from Montessori School of Anderson ... great grandfather and grandfather both played sports at Davidson ... great grandfather M Ray Doubles played football and basketball, while grandfather wrestled. DOUBLES Davidson's doubles teams finished the 2011 season with a 28-47 mark and closed out at 12-18 in SoCon matches. The Wildcats used 17 different combinations for all three positions. • No. 1 position: The Wildcats had five pairs of teams play the No. 1 spot, with Crouser and Moniz-Soares playing 11 matches together ... the duo went 2-9, getting both wins vs. the SoCon ... Crouser and Synn also paired together at No. 1, going 3-6 ... the duo won their first three matches. • No. 2 position: Eight different teams were tried at the No. 2 slot, with Alison Rauh and Synn have the most success ... the since graduated senior and junior last year went 5-1, rattling off a season-ending five-match win streak ... four of those wins came against the SoCon ... MonizSoares also played at No. 2 with Rauh, going 4-6. • No. 3 position: Davidson used nine different teams at No. 3 doubles a year ago ... Clemente and Dicconson had the best success, going 2-1 as a pair ... Dicconson also earned two wins with since graduated Samantha Galainena ... Bschorer played at No. 3 five times.

THE SCHEDULE Davidson will open the season with four of its first six matches on the road, starting on Jan. 21 against Atlantic Coast foe N.C. State, which finished 15-8 a year ago. The Wildcats will also face Winthrop in a neutral site match the same day. The Eagles were nationally ranked in parts of last season, went 15-11 overall and reached the NCAA Tournament after winning the Big South Tournament. Davidson will also face again as it did last year, UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, N.C. A&T, Virginia Tech and USCUpstate. A year ago saw the Wildcats go 3-2 against those opponents. Besides those non-conference teams, the Wildcats’ non-conference schedule will also include Campbell, Richmond, Western Michigan, Boston and Case Western Reserve. Richmond advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago after winning the Atlantic 10 and Boston was also an NCAA Tournament qualifier. Davidson will welcome cross-county rival Charlotte to town, Mar. 27. The two crosstown teams have faced each other 15 times, with the ‘Cats owning a 16-9 alltime record. The Wildcats will open SoCon play at home against Elon, Mar. 11. They lost to the Phoenix for the first time in program history last year, 6-1, but own a 12-1 alltime record. Again, half of the Wildcats league matches will be at home. From March 31-Apr. 14, Davidson will close out the season with all conference matches. Davidson has finished with at least seven wins in the SoCon in six of the last eight years. The SoCon Tournament takes place April 19-22 in Charleston, S.C. Davidson had an early exit last year, falling 4-0 to College of Charleston in the first round. The rest of the field will be looking once again to knock off Furman, which has taken eight tournament titles since 2000 or College of Charleston. The Cougars have won the title three consecutive years now after earning a 4-3 win vs. the Paladins in last year’s final. The Wildcats have reached the finals three times in the past seven seasons, but have yet to bring home the tournament title.

HEAD COACH CAROLINE PRICE Head Coach 30th Year at Davidson Furman ‘72 Record at Davidson: 401-265 Caroline Price enters her 30th season in 2011-12 as the head women's tennis coach. She began her exemplary tenure at Davidson in 1983 and has since guided the Wildcats to one national championship and 22 winning seasons, including seven straight years, before Davidson went 12-12 in 2008-09. The women's tennis program is one of two female programs at Davidson to make a national tournament appearance, and among active Davidson coaches, Price has the highest overall winning percentage (.602) of any women's team. Entering the 2011-2012 women's tennis season, Price has an overall record of 401-265 and is 109-65 in Southern Conference duals. Last year saw Price break in five freshmen as Davidson went just 5-20 overall and 1-9 in league play. It was the first time the Wildcats finished under .500 since the 2001 team went 8-13. The 2011 season was still a milestone year as the veteran coach reached the 400-win plateau for her career, getting it on Feb. 18 in a 7-0 win at home vs. USC-Upstate. The 2010 campaign saw Davidson finish in the top-four of the SoCon standings with a 7-3 mark, while Price guided the 'Cats to a 15-8 overall record. The 'Cats advanced to the SoCon Tournament, as only the top-four teams made it, before seeing their season come to an end with a defeat to eventual champion College of Charleston. The 15 wins made it the sixth time in the last seven years the Wildcats have tallied at least that many wins in a year and marked the ninth straight season they have had a winning record in league matches. After opening the season 4-7, Price guided the Wildcats to an 8-5 mark down the stretch, including a 4-1 win in the 'Cats SoCon Tournament opener against Georgia Southern, to finish the 2009 campaign at 12-12 and 6-4 in league play. The winning mark in SoCon matches was the eighth straight season the Wildcats have sported a winning record against their SoConfoes. Davidson also again had a winning record at home, sporting an 8-4 mark. For the third time in the past four years, Price led the Wildcats to the finals of the SoCon Tennis Championships as Davidson concluded with a 19-6 overall mark (7-2 in SoCon) in 2008. The 19 wins marked the fifth straight season the Wildcats had taken home at least 15 wins or more in a single season. Of the 19 wins, 10 of them came on the Wildcats' home court as they won their first 10 straight home matches, before falling to close out the regular season. The 2007 campaign saw Price guide the Wildcats to an 18-7 overall mark and appearance in the 2007 SoCon Women’s Tennis Championship Semifinals before falling to College of Charleston. Price garnered her third and most recent SoCon Coach of the Year honors during 2001-02 season when her team posted 18 victories. The 2002-03 team followed with a 13-6 season and an appearance in the Southern Conference championship match for the first time since the format of the tournament changed in 1998. And last year, although their hopes for a championship were dashed by College of Charleston in the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament, the Wildcats posted eight regular-season conference wins, the most ever in school history. In Price's second year at Davidson, she led the team to the 1984 NCAA Division III National Championship, the only

12

national championship ever earned by a Davidson athletic team. In 1985, the Wildcats returned to the NCAA Tournament but lost in the finals to the University of San Diego. That year, the 'Cats set a new school record for wins in a season with 21. Coach Price was faced with a new challenge in 1987 as Davidson began competing at the Division I level without the advantage of scholarships. Despite the lack of funds and the marked increase in competition, Price's teams still managed to garner more wins than losses. It was not until the 1990-91 season, the first time Davidson College offered scholarships to women, that Price was able to offer scholarships to her players. In 1993, Davidson started competing as a member of the SoCon after a successful two-year stint (including one league championship) as a member of the Big South Conference. Moving up yet another level in competition, the Wildcats responded to the newest challenge by finishing the season 12-5 for a second-place finish in the league. Since their introduction to the SoCon more than a decade ago, Price's teams have found great success. Thanks to the 'Cats' impressive 6-1 record in conference play in 1994, Price earned Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors. She was recognized again in 1996 after leading the Wildcat squad to a 5-2 league record. A 1972 graduate of Furman, Price earned a bachelor of arts degree in physical education. Before her arrival at Davidson, she served as East Carolina's Director of Men's and Women's Tennis.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR/PRESIDENT JIm mURPHY, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, 53, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. Murphy, an Atlanta native, played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10 million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. The last five years have seen the construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, the new Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and batting cages and the football stadium expansion project, which included a Murphy and Tripp Merritt make a presentation to state-of-the-art weight room, a Davidson all-time leading passer Ryan Alexander. new press box and additional permanent seating. Murphy, the 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, served two terms on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his 24-year-old son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

CAROL QUILLEN, PRESIDENT Carol Quillen, who was previously the vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives at Rice University, became the 18th president of Davidson College on August 1, 2011. Quillen has had a long and distinguished career at Rice. She joined the faculty as an assistant professor of history in 1990, and she earned promotion to associate professor in 1996. From 2004 to 2008, she served as the first director of Rice's Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance, leading development of the center's new mission and shaping an agenda that helped distinguish the center from other organizations. From 2006 to 2010, Quillen served as Rice's vice provost for academic affairs, focusing particularly on developing initiatives that cross academic schools, faculty diversity and faculty development, and resource development. During this time, she worked with faculty to develop and secure funding for a new Center for Asian Studies and a new Institute for Urban Research. She co-chaired the president's diversity task force, and instituted mentoring programs for junior faculty. As vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives, Quillen was responsible for developing and implementing Rice's overall global strategy, which includes research partnerships, recruiting strategies, curricular revision and international opportunities for students. She also facilitates implementation of university-wide initiatives, including the Institute for Urban Research, Rice 360 (a global health effort), and collaborations with Baylor and other institutions within the Texas Medical Center. James W. Crownover, chair of Rice University's Board of Trustees, said, "It's an honor for Rice that one of ours has been chosen to lead a place as respected as Davidson. She will work hard, and she will succeed there." Quillen grew up in New Castle, Del., a small town where she says "it was second nature to support the community and look out for other people." A Presbyterian, she attended Quaker schools from prekindergarten through high school. She earned a B.A. degree in American history from the University of Chicago, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with special and general honors, then received a Ph.D. degree in European history from Princeton. A humanist whose academic interests include early modern European history, European intellectual history and gender studies, Quillen has written two books on Petrarch, as well as a number of scholarly articles, reviews and papers. She has received a number of teaching awards during her tenure at Rice. Quillen's daughter, Caitlin, will be a first-year student at the University of North Carolina next fall. Quillen's husband, Ken Kennedy-a computer pioneer who founded the computer science program at Rice—died of pancreatic cancer in 2007. "His greatest gift to me, and to the Rice community, was in living the life he would have chosen," Quillen said. "That's something I think about in a very profound way every day." At Davidson, Quillen succeeds Tom Ross '72, who announced in August 2010 that he would step down to become president of the University of North Carolina system in January 2011.

THE HISTORY OF THE WILDCAT On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in the South. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6. According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 pounds less. Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensive attack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.” Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in

24

the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved overwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wild men from North Carolina.” The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preachers.” — revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives
