On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in the South. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 1416. According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 pounds less. Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensive attack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.” Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved overwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wild men from North Carolina.” The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preachers.” — revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives

OUT LOOK Now in their eighth season under the direction of head coach Drew Barrett, the Wildcats will enter the 2014 campaign seeking the program’s 10th SoCon Tournament title as Davidson returns a solid core of players from a season ago. It was a successful campaign in 2013 as Davidson finished with a 12-9 overall record and 5-5 in league play. They saw their season end in the second round of the Southern Conference Tournament, a 4-1 decision vs. Samford. The Wildcats moved to the next round after a solid 4-1 victory against Wofford. Seniors Joe Schafer, Chris Mark and Kevin Moore were each honored by the league, with Schafer earning the Sportsmanship Award, and Mark and Moore being named All-SoCon Second Team at No. 1 doubles. This year's club will feature the return of five letterwinners, including the senior trio of Connor Evins, Ethan Kallick and Robert Lightbourn. Add in a talented freshmen group of four, who will add to the depth of the starting lineup, and the Wildcats are primed for a solid 2013 season and their final year in the SoCon.

Davidson picked up 54 singles wins and netted 24 of those wins against SoCon opponents. Davidson’s doubles teams again had a solid year a season ago, tallying 28 wins and 15 in league play after netting 29 and 19, respectively, in 2012. The ‘Cats, who used five doubles teams, will have to replace their No. 1 team as well as two other players from their No. 2 and 3 teams. • No. 1 position: The Wildcats will have a new No. 1 team in 2014 after the graduation of Chris Mark and Kevin Moore, who went 9-10 overall and 8-6 at the top spot ... they were 4-6 vs. the SoCon ... to duo rattled off a five-match win streak early in the year ... Kallick and Joe Schafer also saw action at No. 1, going 2-3. • No. 2 position: Davidson brings back half of its No. 2 team with the return of Kallick ... he and Schafer went 6-3 (3-2 vs. SoCon) at No. 2 and were 8-6 overall ... they finished the year on a two-match win streak ... Lightbourn saw action in one match at No. 2. • No. 3 position: Lightbourn and Evins return after splitting time with Nicky Kunz ... Lightbourn and Kunz played 11 matches at No. 3, going 6-5 and 4-2 vs. the league ... they went 7-5 overall ... Evins earned three wins with Kunz ... Davidson was 9-9 overall at the No. 3 doubles slot.

Davidson will open its 2013 season with a pair of matches on the road at Virginia Tech and vs. Yale on Tech’s campus. The Wildcats play four of their first five matches on the road, and will have a six-match road swing during the middle of the season. The Wildcats will open SoCon play on the road against Georgia Southern, March 7. They won 5-2 last year vs. the Eagles and hold a 13-9 lead in the series. Last year saw the ‘Cats netted league wins against Chattanooga, The Citadel, GSU, Wofford and Furman. Four of the first five SoCon matches will be on the road, with trips to Southern, Elon, Samford and Chattanooga. Davidson closes the season at home against Furman and College of Charleston. The ‘Cats will look to avenge a pair of 4-3 setbacks to both teams a year ago. The SoCon Tournament takes place April 16-19 in Chattanooga, Tenn., as Chattanooga plays host this year. Samford, which went 7-3 in league play during the regular season and finished 15-10 overall, took home the title last year with a 4-3 victory over Elon. Davidson is 12-14 since 1988 in the SoCon Tournament and has reached the second round in two of the past three seasons.

DREW BARRETT head Coach 8th Year at Davidson ill.-Chicago ‘00 Record at Davidson: 65-93 Drew Barrett will be entering his eighth season at the helm of men’s tennis program in 2014. He has compiled a 65-93 overall record (23-45 SoCon) at Davidson in seven years. Three times he has led the 'Cats to 10-plus win seasons. Overall, he has collected 104 wins during his 13 years at Bradley and Davidson. It was a successful campaign in 2013 as the Wildcats fashioned a 12-9 record, including an 8-4 record at home, and went an even 5-5 in SoCon action. The 12 wins were the most since the 2008 season when Davidson went 14-8. They also advanced to the quarterfinals in the SoCon Tournament with a 4-1 win against Wofford, before falling to Samford to end their season. Davidson rattled off a season-high sixmatch win streak in the early goings of 2013. Barrett saw his most-highly recruited class at Davidson finish out their careers as Joe Schafer, Chris Mark and Kevin Moore had strong senior campaigns. The class, which was ranked the 25th best midmajor class in 2009, each earned SoCon honors their last year. The duo of Mark and Moore were named to the league's second team at No. 1 doubles, while Schafer earned the league's Don Bunch/Buddy Hartsell Sportsmanship Award. The Wildcats' No. 1 player, Schafer was also honored with SoCon Player of the Week, March 5. The 2012 season saw Davidson go 7-14 overall and pick up a 3-7 record in league play. The Wildcats were 5-6 at home, including rattling off a season-best four-match win streak. Under the guidance of Barrett, senior Calum Gee and junior Joe Schafer were the first doubles pair in proram history to earn a national ranking. The duo started the season ranked 19th in the nation. They finished with a 108 overall record at the No. 1 slot. In the Fall of 2011, the pair won the doubles title at The Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas, against some top ranked schools. Barrett also saw his top freshman, Nicky Kunz, earn All-SoCon Freshman Team honors. The first-year player led the 'Cats with a 12-8 singles mark. It was the second time during Barrett's tenure he has had an all-league freshman team member as Schafer made the team in 2010. On March 7, 2012, the Wildcats gave Barrett his 50th career win during his tenure at Davidson, scoring a 5-2 SoCon victory at Georgia Southern to open league play. In 2011, the Wildcats compiled a 7-18 record overall, with two of those wins coming vs. the SoCon. Davidson as a team played seven matches that were decided by one point. The schedule also featured matches against nationally-ranked opponents N.C. State (57th) , Clemson (53rd), USC-Upstate (60th), Harvard (73rd), Wake Forest (37th) and Radford (63rd)- all ranks based on what teams were when they played Davidson. Despite a tough regular season, the 'Cats did advance to the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament when they scored a 4-1 win vs. seventh-seeded Wofford. Barrett also saw sophomore Joe Schafer earn second-team all-league honors at No. 1 singles, making it the third time under Barrett a player has earned first or second team honors. The 2010 season saw Davidson hit the 10-win mark under Barrett for the second time in the past three years, finishing with a 10-11 record. The Wildcats just missed out on being one of the top-four teams to advance to the Southern Conference Tournament, sporting a 4-6 record. The 2010 season was highlighted by two win streak, first a four-match streak at the start of the season and then a five-match win streak in the middle that included league wins over Chattanooga, The Citadel and Georgia Southern. Five times Davidson blanked their opponents, 7-0. Barrett saw three of his players earn all-conference accolades, with senior Eric Noble and Joe Schafer earning a spot on the All-SoCon First Team in doubles, sophomore Calum Gee getting second team honors at No. 5 singles and Schafer being named to the league's all-freshman team. The Wildcats went 7-17 overall and closed SoCon play at 2-8 dur-
ing the 2009 campaign. They did open up the SoCon Tournament with a 4-3 win over Samford to advance to the quarterfinals for the eighth time in the past 10 years. The 2008 season saw him guide the ’Cats to their first winning season since the 2001 campaign with a mark of 14-8. The 14 wins were the most since the 1999 team went 15-9. Of those 14 wins, 10 of them came at the friendly confines of the Covington Tennis Courts where the team finished 10-2. Davidson also sported a 5-4 mark in SoCon play, while advancing to the quarterfinals of the SoCon tournament. In Barrett's first season, 2007, he led the Wildcats to an 8-16 overall mark his first season and a 2-7 SoCon record. He also guided the Wildcats into the quarterfinals of the SoCon tournament. Barrett came to Davidson by way of Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., where he was the head coach of the Bradley Braves men’s tennis team for five years. A former assistant coach at DePaul and IllinoisChicago, Barrett inherited the Braves' program that had won just one conference match in 33 tries before his arrival and helped build them into a competitive team in the Missouri Valley Conference. In 2006, Barrett led the Braves to their first MVC Tournament semifinal birth since 1993 after garnering the program’s first maindraw victory in the conference meet in the dual-format era. The Braves finished with an overall record of 7-13 and 2-5 in the MVC. Two of his players became the school’s first MVC individual tournament champions, claiming the No. 1 doubles crown, while another secured his fourth all-conference recognition and earned his third MVC Scholar-Athlete honor. In all, seven players earned MVC Scholar-Athlete recognition in 2006. The 2003 and 2004 spring seasons were two of the most successful in Bradley’s history. Barrett guided the Braves to a 3-5 conference mark in the spring of 2003 and a ranking of 13th in the final Central Region ITA Poll. Then in the spring of 2004, the Braves went 10-10 overall with a 4-4 mark in MVC play. The four MVC victories were a school-record since round-robin regular-season play began in the mid-’90s. He coached an MVC Freshman of the Year in 2003 and had the MVC’s No. 1 singles all-conference player in 2004. Barrett also coached a winner of Bradley’s highest athletic honor, the Watonga Award. During his five-year tenure at Bradley, the Braves finished higher in the regular-season standings than any team since 1989. Before his head coaching duties at Bradley, Barrett was an assistant coach at DePaul during the 1999-2000 campaign, where he helped guide the Blue Demons from a ranking of 125th nationally to as high as 48th in a season termed as the most successful in school history. The Blue Demons won 14 dual matches, with five of those wins coming over nationally-ranked teams. A graduate of the University of Illinois-Chicago, Barrett was involved in junior tennis in the Chicago suburbs for nearly a decade. Most recently, he served as Junior Tennis Coordinator for the RushCopley Healthplex, in Aurora and as Director of Junior Development at the South Barrington Tennis Club. Barrett and his wife Mandy, formely Mandy Alaks, reside in Cornelius with their two children.

HALL OF FAME MEMBERS Oliver Roddey, Hall Class of 1989-90 Roddey won more state tennis championships than any other male player in North Carolina. He was a junior champion at age 14 and later ranked No. 1 in the South for men. He played No. 1 at Davidson four years and won the Southern Conference singles and doubles championships in 1950. He's one of the original members of the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame. Roddey was undefeated in North Carolina tournaments (1947-52) and the first North Carolinian named to the Junior Davis Cup Team in 1948.
Archibald W. Archer, Hall Class of 1990-91 Archer '47 is legendary for his accomplishments in tennis. As a junior he led the Wildcats to an 8-0 record. He played No. 1 and led Davidson to a 13-4 record as a senior. He's been prominent on the national tennis scene since he graduated, winning a number of championships in his age bracket. One of his most remarkable achievements came in 1974 when Archer defeated Bobby Riggs for the National 60 Clay Court Championship and then teamed with Riggs for the doubles title. He was inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 1977. Like many students of his day, Archer was a two-sport athlete and played football.
P. Whitlock Cobb, Hall Class of 1989-90 Cobb, one of Davidson's finest multi-sport athletes, was named Southern Conference Athlete of the Year in 1950 and is a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. He was a four-year starter in basketball and captain of the 1950 team. He was a four-year starter in tennis and teamed with Bo Roddey to win the Southern Conference doubles championship in 1950. Cobb also earned four letters in track, giving him a total of 12 varsity letters.
Charles Williams, Hall Class of 2000-01 Mike Williams, considered by his peers as the best athlete at Davidson of his era, was a multi-sport star for the Wildcat, participating in basketball, football and tennis. In basketball, he played four seasons (1944, ’47, ’48, ’49) and was co-captain for two years. In football he played three seasons (1943, ’47, ’48) and was a member of the tennis team two years (1947, ’48). He was named all-state in basketball and was a third team All-Southern Conference selection. His Davidson career was interrupted by a tour of duty with the Army Air Corps from 1944-46. At Davidson, he was a member of the Student Council, junior class president, president of Kappa Sigma and was named to Who’s Who Among American College Students.

WILDCAT HALL OF FAME MEMBERS Harry Fogleman, Hall Class of 2001-02 Fogleman was Davidson’s tennis coach during one of its most successful eras, posting a record of 175 wins against only 69 defeats in 11 seasons with the Wildcats. His teams won the Southern Conference championship six of seven years from 1965-71 despite not having a single scholarship player. As a head coach at Duke, Cincinnati and Davidson, his overall record was 390 wins against just 133 losses. Fogleman starred as a player at Duke and played professionally after graduating. In 1971, he was honored by the National Tennis Education Foundation as the nation’s “outstanding teacher for making the greatest contribution to tennis in the United States.” He served on five USLTA committees and designed rackets for a sporting goods manufacturer. Fogleman also guided Davidson’s soccer teams from 1962 until 1972, posting a record of 81-33-8. He guided the Wildcats to Southern Conference championships in 1970 and ’71. Fogleman owns the distinction as the only Davidson coach to win two conference championships in the same school year (1970-71).
Jon Pastel, Hall Class of 2008-09 Pastel ‘98 was a two-time Southern Conference Singles Champion and is the only Davidson tennis player to earn All-SoCon honors in all four seasona as a Wildcat. He posted a career record of 108-32, including a 17-4 mark as a senior, on his way to being named SoCon Player of the Year in both the 1996 and 1997 seasons, the only player in school history to win the award and one of three in conference history to earn multiple Player of the Year honors. In 1997, he became the first Wildcat to reach the NCAA Tournament. He achieved a national ranking as high as 30th during his career and earned the Tommy Peters Award in 1998 for his outstanding athletic accomplishments while at Davidson.
Jeff Frank, Hall Class of 2011-12 Frank spent 34 years as the men’s head tennis coach and won more games than any coach in Davidson history in any sport (541-319-1). He was the Southern Conference Coach of the Year five times and compiled 29 winning records in his 34 seasons. He was inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 1996. He was given the SoCon Distinguished Service Award in 2006, and only former wrestling coach Charlie Parker (40 years) had a longer coaching tenure at Davidson. Frank took over the tennis program in 1973 and led the ‘Cats to a 23-2 record and a SoCon title. The Wildcats logged 20-win seasons under Frank nine times, including four in a row from 1985-88. He was also the Big South Coach of the Year both seasons Davidson competed in that league. Frank passed away in May of 2009.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR / PRESIDENT JiM MUrPhy direcTor of aThleTics Jim Murphy was introduced as Davidson College’s Director of Athletics in November of 1995, returning to his alma mater to lead the Wildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics and into the next century. Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy, 53, spent 10 years as executive associate athletic director and chief financial officer for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. Murphy, an Atlanta native, played football and baseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools. Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rate of 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 with a rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year. “I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics and think the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after graduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercollegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.” Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued several major capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10 million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have been completed in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of the Southern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and also served as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte. Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committee and Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force on Recruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture of recruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’s Fiscal Responsibility Oversight Group. A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidson with a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in management from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit manager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets. Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board of Managers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board of the Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directors of the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League. Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson, and his 24-year-old son, Matt, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

carol QUilleN PresideNT Carol Quillen, who was previously the vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives at Rice University, became the 18th president of Davidson College on August 1, 2011. Quillen has had a long and distinguished career at Rice. She joined the faculty as an assistant professor of history in 1990, and she earned promotion to associate professor in 1996. From 2004 to 2008, she served as the first director of Rice's Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance, leading development of the center's new mission and shaping an agenda that helped distinguish the center from other organizations. From 2006 to 2010, Quillen served as Rice's vice provost for academic affairs, focusing particularly on developing initiatives that cross academic schools, faculty diversity and faculty development, and resource development. During this time, she worked with faculty to develop and secure funding for a new Center for Asian Studies and a new Institute for Urban Research. She co-chaired the president's diversity task force, and instituted mentoring programs for junior faculty. As vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives, Quillen was responsible for developing and implementing Rice's overall global strategy, which includes research partnerships, recruiting strategies, curricular revision and international opportunities for students. She also facilitates implementation of university-wide initiatives, including the Institute for Urban Research, Rice 360 (a global health effort), and collaborations with Baylor and other institutions within the Texas Medical Center. James W. Crownover, chair of Rice University's Board of Trustees, said, "It's an honor for Rice that one of ours has been chosen to lead a place as respected as Davidson. She will work hard, and she will succeed there." Quillen grew up in New Castle, Del., a small town where she says "it was second nature to support the community and look out for other people." A Presbyterian, she attended Quaker schools from pre-kindergarten through high school. She earned a B.A. degree in American history from the University of Chicago, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with special and general honors, then received a Ph.D. degree in European history from Princeton. A humanist whose academic interests include early modern European history, European intellectual history and gender studies, Quillen has written two books on Petrarch, as well as a number of scholarly articles, reviews and papers. She has received a number of teaching awards during her tenure at Rice. Quillen's daughter, Caitlin, will be a first-year student at the University of North Carolina next fall. Quillen's husband, Ken Kennedy-a computer pioneer who founded the computer science program at Rice— died of pancreatic cancer in 2007. "His greatest gift to me, and to the Rice community, was in living the life he would have chosen," Quillen said. "That's something I think about in a very profound way every day." At Davidson, Quillen succeeds Tom Ross '72, who announced in August 2010 that he would step down to become president of the University of North Carolina system in January 2011.

Sports Information Gavin McFarlin is entering his ninth year in Davidson’s sports information office for the 2013-14 season. He serves as the primary contact for women’s soccer, women's basketball, men’s and women’s tennis and lacrosse, and he has also covered volleyball and men’s cross country/track and field while at Davidson. McFarlin also manages the athletic department's photography needs. Prior to coming to Davidson, he spent two years at University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., working in the media relations office as a graduate assistant, 2003-05. He covered the men’s and women’s swimming teams along with the men’s and women’s water polo teams. In addition, he assisted in helping with game-day management, reporting, writing releases, broadcasting and other duties for both men’s and women’s basketball teams, the baseball and softball teams, and both men’s and women’s volleyball teams. While at Pacific, McFarlin received a master’s degree in mass communication in May of 2005. McFarlin has also worked in the Ashland University and North Florida SID offices during his time in the sports information field. A native of Ashland, Ohio, McFarlin attended Ashland University in his hometown, graduating with a degree in sports communication and a minor in electronic media production, radio/television in May of 2002. During his time at AU, he was the sports director for the campus radio station for two years while being one of the Eagles’ main sports play-by-play broadcasters for the station. He also was a three-year sport anchor/broadcaster for the campus television station. Upon graduation, McFarlin spent time time in Jacksonville, Fla., working for Fox Sports Radio. McFarlin resides in Davidson.
