Autumn 2018
As a photographer Autumn means a lot to me, but it's more than the 'pretty colours' that you might see elsewhere ..... it's a deep emotional attachment that is a perfect example of impermanence, one final hurrah before the leaves fall off and winter settles in, beginning the whole process again. Artists and romantics have been fascinated with autumn for years and it's only right that creative photographers should be the same... it should ignite something, a need to be out in it, living it, breathing it, wearing it, making the art of photography almost irrelevent. The way I work with so much colour, the subject is not important, I like to focus without focussing... the tone and the way the colours interact becomes the image rather than the subject, this makes the background of an image as important as the focussed section. I hope you enjoy these images on whatever level works for you and if you get something out of them then I have achieved what I set out to do. As always unless attributed to an author the words, spelling mistakes and grammar errors are my own.

This shot is all about colour, the red was so vibrant that it had to be the star of the show. I love details and the detail and texture in this is what drew me to the image.... the shiny dark green with the darkness contrast amazingly with the vibrant red and the softer yellows.
There are two more images of this bridge later in the book that will show how the colour progresses
I love creating this kind of shot, only the edge of the leaf is in focus but don't discount the blurry background as it has equal importance in my images, it creates an artisitc frame that holds the whole thing together.
My favourite mountain, I have spent a lot of time here over the years and at this stage images from here are almost secondary.... I return to this scene often on 'attitude readjustment' days
"There is a part of me that will forever want to be walking under autumn leaves." — Roger Ebert
As a (hopefully) creative photographer I don't have to travel far to get an image I like, this one is at my front door and is a cherry blossom bush that goes the most amazing colours in Autumn.
“Anyone who thinks fallen leaves are dead has never watched them dancing on a windy day.” – Shira Tamir
I see details, I ignored a waterfall because this held more interest to me, the red emerging from the darkness has a sinister look and maybe it's wrong but I love that.
“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers” – L.M. Montgomery
This shots interest for me lies in the contrast of the leaves and the smooth water, couple that with the uniform lines of the water and I love this scene.
I take inspiration from many things in life and one of those inspirations is classical art and in particular Thomas Cole, the following images are inspired by the art of Mr Cole
The very epitome of impermanence for me, it screams to me of the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi that winds it's way through my life. A very simple shot to achieve which also has an appeal.
A simple shot, all about the colours of the leaves and the tone of the background....
Another with a classical look, the shaft of light and the colour tones in the shaft of light are what makes this for me.
It's scenes like this that make romantics lose their mind over Autumn and I'm sure you can see why. A truly peaceful place to spend time and just hang out. Watching the leaves blowing in the wind is a truly beautiful thing.
So this is what Autumn means to me, all the colours, all the feelings, the lowering temperatures, the ability to wear real clothes and, for me, the intense period I spend out in Autumn, soaking in as much as I can absorb. Thank you for viewing this book , I hope you enjoyed it and it inspires you the way Autumn inspires me.
I am such an Autumn person. Give me a quiet, cozy spot with a view of the changing trees on a crisp, late September day, a warm drink, and a good book and I will be in all my glory.......
